Second generation Toyota Avensis. Toyota Avensis T250 - business class for little money It is possible, but carefully ...

Toyota Avensis of the second generation received the factory index T250. Avensis entered the automotive market in 2003, where it lasted until 2008. It was assembled in three body styles: sedan, station wagon and hatchback. In 2006, the model has undergone minor restyling. Avensis enjoyed good popularity, largely due to its attractive appearance, spacious interior, good driving performance, high safety and ... reliability. Although the latter is not all smooth sailing - there are serious reservations.

Engines

Under the hood, atmospheric gasoline engines with a working volume of 1.6 liters and a power of 110 hp could be installed. (very rare), 1.8 l - 129 hp (1 ZZ-FE), 2.0 L - 147 hp (1AZ-FE) and 2.4 l - 163 hp (2AZ-FSE). Also in the range of engines there were diesel units with a working volume of 2.0 liters with a capacity of 116 and 126 hp. and 2.2 liters with a capacity of 148 and 175 hp.

Many owners of Toyota Avensis with gasoline engines note a noticeable vibration of the engine running at idle - after 50-100 thousand km. Sometimes the reason for this is the "pillows" of the engine. But in most cases, it is not possible to establish the cause of the vibrations. The owners resort to cleaning the throttle, replacing candles, ignition coils, someone is trying to "alter" the engine tuning program. But all in vain.

The most popular 1.8 liter engine turned out to be seriously flawed. Motors assembled before May 2005 had a large "oily appetite" due to a design miscalculation. Oil consumption could reach up to 1 liter per 1000 km, which you will agree is not enough. After the design of the pistons and oil scraper rings was finalized, and the disease was cured. You can moderate the appetite of voracious motors after the "capital" by replacing the rings and pistons. The cost of such repairs is about 35-40 thousand rubles. There is another unpleasant situation with these engines - seizures of connecting rod bearings on engines manufactured in 2007-2008 with a run of about 60-90 thousand km. Fortunately, there are few such cases. In the presence of such a defect, the owners noted a clearly pronounced extraneous rattling under load in the range of 2500-3000 rpm.

The "diesel" of the 1.8 liter engine on a cold engine indicates the need to replace the drive belt tensioner of the mounted units. The problem may appear after 50-100 thousand km. The reason for extraneous sounds is the wear of the plastic bushings of the tensioner. After replacing the bushings, machined to order from caprolon, you can forget about the problem for a long time.

The 2.0 liter gasoline engine is considered more demanding on fuel quality, but in reality there are few problems with it. A serious problem with these motors is the breakdown of the threads of the cylinder head bolts and their pulling. True, such cases are few. The essence of the problem is that due to the pulling of the bolts, the head begins to fit loosely to the block, which leads to leakage of coolant, overheating of the motor, etc. and so on. The cost of repairs is from 50 to 100 thousand rubles.

Also, on 2-liter gasoline engines, gasoline may begin to leak from under the “leaky” sealing ring under the fuel pressure sensor. This will be notified by a characteristic smell in the cabin, which appears when the "climate" is turned on. The sealing ring is recommended to be replaced with a copper one.

The 2.4 liter engine is just a “good boy” compared to the rest. All gasoline engines eventually begin to slowly take oil after 100-150 thousand km, even a modified 1.8 liter. As a rule, the "oily appetite" for 150-200 thousand km does not exceed 1-2 liters per 10,000 km.

Diesel units in general are not capricious, but they prefer only the best grades of diesel fuel. After 150-200 thousand km, you will most likely have to face the need to clean the geometry of the turbine and the EGR valve. Diesel engines with a working volume of 2.2 liters may also require replacement of the cylinder head gasket. In addition, 2,2D-CAT, with a catalyst, had problems until 2007 due to clogged catalyst tubes. After the design of the tubes was changed, and a repair kit was released to replace the previously installed ones.

With a run of more than 100-150 thousand km, a pump may be asked for a replacement (the original is about 3 thousand rubles), a thermostat (about 800 rubles), a starter (brush wear is about 1600 rubles).

Transmission

Paired with engines, a 5-speed “mechanics” or a 4-speed “automatic” was installed, with the exception of a 2.4-liter gasoline, which was combined only with a 5-band automatic transmission.

"Mechanics", contrary to the usual, turned out to be extremely unreliable. As a rule, it all starts with the appearance of a hum with a run of more than 60-100 thousand km at a speed of 60-80 km / h. These are the bearings of the primary and secondary shafts, and sometimes the differential. It is not worth delaying repairs, otherwise one of the overtakings may end sadly. Cases of box jamming at speed are proof of this. A set of new bearings will cost 3-5 thousand rubles, and the work to replace them will cost 7,000 rubles.

Owners of Avensis with manual transmission after 100-150 thousand km also note poor (difficult) inclusion of odd gears and reverse, as well as biting the lever at first speed. Replacing the clutch solves the problem for a short time. A new clutch kit costs about 9,000 rubles, and its resource is about 150-200 thousand km.

"Automatic" is much more reliable than "mechanics" and, as a rule, does not cause problems, and cases of unforeseen repairs are rare.

Chassis

Suspension Toyota Avensis copes well with Russian roads and at the same time does not “crumble”. Racks and bushings of the front stabilizer go more than 20-40 thousand km, rear - more than 60-100 thousand km. Front and rear wheel bearings serve more than 150-200 thousand km (6-7 thousand rubles assembled with a hub). As a rule, the matter does not reach the levers and shock absorbers with a run of less than 180-200 thousand km. Steering tips go more than 100-120 thousand km.

With a run of more than 50-100 thousand km, the front caliper often starts to rattle. To eliminate the "breaks" it is necessary to replace the guides.

On Toyota Avensis with a 1.8 liter engine, electric power steering is used, on the rest - hydraulic booster. After 30-50 thousand km, clicks or plastic crackling may appear in the steering wheel of the Avensis with the EUR when the steering wheel is turned. The reason is the backlash in the worm pair due to the wear of the plastic gear. To eliminate the drawback, it is enough to rearrange the gear at an angle of more than 90 degrees.

Body and interior

There are no complaints about the Toyota Avensis body iron, no corrosion centers were noticed even on the first copies. Many probably noticed the difference in the shade of the front bumper and the hood of the pre-styling Avensis. First thought - the car was repainted! But in fact, this is a feature of the factory painting of pre-styling Toyota Avensis.

A lot of complaints were caused by the optics of the headlights. For 2-3 years, the reflector mirror crumbles, and the headlights no longer illuminate the road normally. More often the problem occurs on cars with xenon light. In addition, the headlight units themselves often fog up.

Insects in the back gauge are a common occurrence. The lantern itself often sweats, and when removed, up to half a glass of water is found inside. The reason is a leaky seal that needs to be replaced.

On cars older than 7-9 years, the headlight washer motor may fail (about 160 rubles) or the telescopic nozzle may jam due to dirt. In winter, the plastic pin of the gas tank flap often breaks off. The new mechanism is sold only as an assembly for 3-5 thousand rubles. But having shown ingenuity, parts of the pin can be glued together. In cold weather, the folding / unfolding mechanism of the exterior mirrors can wedge.

Door locks do not like the simultaneous pulling of the handle and the operation of the central lock for closing / opening. This leads to the destruction of the plastic axis of the lock gear and loss of performance. A new castle costs about 3-4 thousand rubles.

The interior of the Toyota Avensis is assembled from high-quality materials and is not prone to squeaks. The cause of periodic squeaks in the area of \u200b\u200bthe windshield or rear windows is the plastic hooks of the guides that need to be cut off.

With a run of more than 100-150 thousand km, some drivers notice that the seat begins to squeeze through, and scuffs appear on the leather seat trim. Sometimes the seat creaks due to the contact of the springs with the chair frame. On cars older than 7-8 years, there is a burning of the seat upholstery with a heater.

After 100-150 thousand km, damper actuators may rustle or snap, and there are problems with the correct distribution of flows. As a rule, the drive on the passenger side first fails, and after a while the driver's side. It is often possible to restore the drive to working capacity after cleaning and lubricating the contacts. The heater motor may fail due to worn motor brushes.

With a run of more than 150-200 thousand km, an air conditioning compressor failure occurs. More often, the pulley damper plate breaks due to the wedging of the compressor. The reason for the "wedge" is the leakage of freon and, accordingly, lubrication from the system.

Simultaneous display of ABS, TRC OFF and VSC may indicate insufficient battery charge. But more often the cause in the Bosch ABS block is a ground break on the board. The cost of a new block is about 80,000 rubles; at auto-dismantling, you can find a block for 5-8 thousand rubles. Any master involved in the repair of electrical equipment will be able to find the place of the break and solder the track for 1-2 thousand rubles.

Due to the failure of the resistors in the electrical circuits, the displays of the on-board computer (on dorestyles) and the head unit cease to display information. The cost of repairs is about 1.5-2.5 thousand rubles.

Conclusion

Toyota Avensis second generation leaves behind an ambiguous impression. Here, the usual reliability is adjacent to ridiculous design miscalculations and shortcomings. The ideal choice would be a Toyota Avensis with a 2.4 liter engine. These cars had only an automatic transmission and a high level of equipment.

Almost all cars are front wheel drive. All-wheel drive, too, can not be afraid, everything is there, like a “rafik”, but they are extremely rare. In addition, these are exclusively sedans with not too powerful engines. At the same time, Avensis is one of the few cars that have more problems with manual transmissions than with automatic transmissions.

Avensis has one interesting feature. In all cars with "stock" motors, drives rarely break. Sometimes CV joints fail, occasionally cuts off the splines of the drives. But for the “stick” of the drive itself to break in half - this only happens with Toyota. The reason lies in the corrosion of the part under the load pad. Corrosion sharpens an already lightweight shaft, and when driving through irregularities with traction or slipping, this shaft breaks. Fortunately, contract parts from Toyota Wish in the back of ZNE10G will help out. The Fielder 123 will work too: it's inexpensive, and the part is usually in excellent condition. Buying the original is only new, all "used" ones are affected by corrosion to one degree or another. These same parts will come in handy when the original CV joints fail, which are also quite flimsy here.

As I said, there are enough problems with the manual transmission. Basically, the bearing of the secondary shaft fails under the number 90903-63010, more precisely, its "ancestor" 90080-36139. But there are also difficulties with oil leaks through the shaft seals. Unfortunately, if you don’t go to the service at the first suspicious noises, there will be nothing to repair: the remnants of the dead bearing will float around the box, disabling the rest of the bearings, gears and, finally, the differential. You can guess from which cars the boxes fit if you read the paragraph about drives and CV joints. The original ones with Avensis are again quite scarce.

In principle, the cost of repairs in any case will not be too high. That contract boxes, that small repairs are inexpensive, in the range of 15-40 thousand rubles with work. But already somehow there are too many problems for a reliable brand, isn't it?

If you do not want difficulties, then you can take a car with automatic transmission. With a little bit of care, there will be no problems, especially since the oil is changed here quite often according to the regulations, the boxes have a good cooling system and conservative settings. With 1.8 liter engines, the U341E mainly works, and the stronger U140 / U241E is put on the two-liter ones. But the 2.4-liter engines rely on a five-speed automatic transmission of the U151E series.

All automatic transmissions are considered almost eternal. In any case, they are more reliable than motors and, with normal maintenance, will go far beyond 300 thousand kilometers. They have little wear on the gas turbine engine blocking pads, they have good and strong mechanics. But, unfortunately, everything can be broken.

Four-speed U140 / U241 - the boxes are strong, they can withstand engines up to three liters of working volume. Two-liter for them - not a problem at all. But the front planetary gear set, due to the peculiarities of the lubrication system, always fails before the rest of the elements, especially if the driver did not spare the gearbox and engine.

From purely resource problems, one can encounter wear on the rear cover, which also depends on loads and driving style, but also does not forgive contaminated oil. After the rear cover is worn out, a pressure leak finishes off the Direct clutch package and the seat of its drum. And, of course, for boxes operated with dirty oil, the oil pump bushing or the oil pump itself usually fails.

Much more often, the “first bell” manifests itself in the form of malfunctions in the valve body. His problems are directly related to the wear of the gearbox mechanics and oil contamination. Usually the main problem is contamination and erosion of the channels of the solenoids. To repair them, there are restoration kits from Sonnax, but most often “used” valve bodies are simply selected: there are still enough parts, and repairs require a high production culture, as a result of which not all workshops can do it.

U341E boxes are the same U140 in miniature. They have exactly the same difficulties with overloading the front planetary gear and with the back cover. But the valve body is somewhat more reliable and causes less trouble. Their resource is definitely no less than that of their older brother, so you can safely take it. Just check the cleanliness of the oil and listen at low speeds for a “trolleybus” sound in first or second gears.

The five-speed U151E is designed for more aggressive driving. In many ways, it is similar to four-speed gearboxes, but with its own characteristics.

The gas turbine engine blocking pads here wear out quite quickly, especially with an aggressive driving style. Already after 150 thousand run, it is necessary to carefully monitor the contamination of the oil in order to prevent their "operation" to the adhesive layer.

The Forward clutch package is heavily overloaded and very sensitive to pressure loss. And they happen for the same reasons as the four-speed counterparts: mainly due to wear on the rear cover and drum seals of the forward package.

Pictured: Toyota Avensis "2003–08

Much more often you can meet the destruction of the needle bearing of the cover. But planetary gears are loaded more evenly, and problems with them happen less often.

The valve body also turned out to be more sensitive to contamination and more expensive to restore than four-stage boxes. The box requires more careful maintenance, but can better withstand the increased loads from the "racers".

It is much more expensive to repair. But the maximum resource of the mechanism is still high, it's just that the conditions for achieving it are noticeably tougher. Change the oil more often, preferably every 30 thousand kilometers, and keep it clean. A large external radiator and an external filter of the box would also be useful here, as on other five-speed Aisin boxes.

Motors

Toyota engines are considered one of the most reliable. True, a lot of tales are associated with the engines of the 1ZZ series, as well as with direct injection D4. And not all of these stories are lies. To the credit of the company, it must be said that in any case, the layout solutions and workmanship are very high, and other brands have a lot to learn. But there is no legendary reliability here at all. Moreover, catalysts, exhaust, supports, cooling systems and even wiring are already entering the time of withering, complicating and shortening the life of motors.

The most common Avensis engine is the 1.8-liter 1ZZ-FE series engine. A lot of swear words have been said about him. It is now obvious that the real problems of the motor are an unsuccessful piston group until 2005, a small timing chain resource, a lack of repair dimensions and a lack of full-fledged valve seats in the cylinder head.

Timing chain 2AZ-FE 2.4

The lightweight cylinder block also turned out to be very sensitive to overheating, which even caused serious condemnation of Open-Deck designs in general among Toyota drivers.

The situation is noticeably improved by a reliable control system, inexpensive spare parts and its prevalence. In addition, there are cast-iron sleeves that are damaged only during prolonged work with fixed rings. In extreme cases, the sleeve is cut out and the motor is sleeved again. True, the fragile design of the block makes this operation rather complicated.

Having bought a dead unit, you will find out that there are no repair sizes, and if there are cracks on the valves and their seats are “killed”, then you will be offered to immediately change the cylinder head: there are no classic cast-iron seats.

Pictured: Toyota Avensis Sedan "2003–06

Valve seals sit loosely, and the increased temperature of the cylinder head reduces their service life to four to five years.

But the chain is relatively inexpensive and easy to replace - only a little more expensive than replacing the belt.

The main complaint about the motor is a tendency to oil appetite. And in general, he is not as reliable as expected from him (this is sarcasm). But, as they say, these are your expectations and your problems. For many owners, these motors have traveled 250-350 thousand kilometers without major repairs, which means that the potential of the motor is not bad. With a new or modified piston group (some owners simply drill holes to drain the oil from the oil scraper ring or change it to a wider set), after careful assembly and with the catalyst replaced in time, the engine can go another couple of hundred thousand kilometers. But for this, you will have to service it in time and prevent overheating of the oil in the crankcase by installing “protections” and prolonged idling with the air conditioner on. In extreme cases, you can buy a contract unit very cheaply. Pretty much the price of metal.

Pictured: Toyota Avensis Wagon "2003–06

On the Avensis T250, you can find instances of a motor with pistons of the “problematic” series 13101-22031 with a moderate oil appetite, which, at the slightest overheating or an unsuccessful choice of oil, strives to develop into a serious one. It is highly recommended to "upgrade" to 13101-22032 or, if possible, even 13101-22140/13101-22142/13101-22180. Cars up to the 2006 model year are at risk. But it’s also not worth counting on the complete absence of problems in more recent engines: the problem was complex, and the manufacturer tried to solve it until the end of the production of this series of engines in 2013.

Pictured: Toyota Avensis Wagon "2006–08

The “small-sized” versions of this 1.6-liter 3ZZ-FE series engine inherit mainly the positive qualities of the 1.8-liter engine. The oil appetite is much less pronounced and manifests itself mainly after runs over 250 thousand, the cylinder head works more reliably, and even the chain runs longer. But there are cars with this engine extremely rarely and in very simple configurations.

The two-liter 1AZ-FE engine is traditionally considered more reliable than the 1.8-liter. And therefore, many willingly overpay for a more powerful modification. However, even here it was not without a few “buts”.

European cars relied on a motor not only with conventional distributed injection, but also with direct injection 1AZ-FSE. Its fuel equipment is distinguished by a noticeably higher price, increased complexity in diagnostics, and frankly poor starting qualities in winter. In addition, these engines, when operated in short trips and in winter, noticeably increase the output of the cylinder in the upper part due to the ingress of a large amount of gasoline.

Radiator

31 926 rubles

The early series of engines, up to the restyling of 2006, are very prone to "pulling" the threads of the cylinder head bolts from the block, and therefore the craftsmen are extremely reluctant to repair them. And if the antifreeze has already flowed, and the engine has overheated, then the block will most likely have to be replaced.

In principle, the engines of this series have no unsolvable problems, especially if the injection is conventional distributed, and if desired, even the cylinder block can be repaired, but you need to be aware of these features when buying. In addition, engines have two catalysts and four lambdas, they are prone to increased carbon formation in the intake manifold. And FSE versions suffer from very serious soot on the valves. The repair dimensions of the piston group are also missing. In short, 1AZ engines after 2006 are indeed quite “Toyota” in terms of reliability, but only with conventional injection. Otherwise, you need to be prepared for surprises.

The undoubted advantages include a good resource of the piston group.

Motors of the 2AZ-FE and 2AZ-FSE series repeat 1AZ, but there are no problems with the thread of the cylinder block, but balance shafts are added. The piston group resource is on average a little higher, and in general this is the most reliable engine of the FE version on the Avensis. But it is also the rarest.

Pictured: Toyota Avensis Sedan "2006–08

Diesel engines are rare, but there are a lot of problems with them. This is clearly not Toyota's forte. Leave them to European users.

Summary

I think it is now clear why the Avensis is not as popular as the Camry. The brand pulls the price up, but there is no real reliability and legendary “indestructibility” here. And the difference in price with the larger Camry for new cars was practically absent. But a larger car was equipped with much more interesting power units and was generally more reliable ...

This "Japanese" of English origin is suitable for accomplished, sensible and self-confident people who do not chase newfangled or original things.

Even at the time of its appearance, the second generation Toyota Avensis did not surprise with special originality. It has a restrained design, not without attractiveness. At the same time, even after seven years, this model does not look outdated. Needless to say - a self-sufficient gentleman (Avensis was produced at the Toyota plant in the UK).

Like its predecessor, the range of Toyota Avensis II modifications includes a sedan, station wagon and liftback. Only classic sedans were officially sold in Ukraine. A year before the end of production (in 2007), the model was restyled, but the changes were so minor that only connoisseurs can determine which version it is: on the front bumper - they are rectangular and on the rear lights - their protective cap is completely red (all of these are versions of 2003-2007).

Delicious "stuffing"

This "Japanese" is distinguished by good passive safety - according to the results of EuroNCAP crash tests in 2003, he won the maximum 5 stars. Even in the basic version Technical - 9 (!) Airbags. By the way, Avensis became the first model in its class equipped with a knee airbag for the driver.

Attracts Avensis and a good level of equipment. So, even the basic versions look more attractive than many competitors: there is a rain and light sensor, ABS systems, directional stability (VSC), traction control (TRC), immobilizer, central locking, power windows and mirrors, multifunction steering wheel, branded radio, dual-zone climate control, optitronny instrument panel, adjustable in two directions steering wheel, power steering.

The bodies are well protected against corrosion, and there are no comments on the Avensis in this discipline. The salon is very well made. It is designed without excessive pomp and originality. At the same time, it is very comfortable inside, and the ergonomics are such that after a short time it seems as if you have known this car for a long time. Noise isolation to match the high-end models.

Change your oil on time!

Despite the rather diverse range of power units, only 1.8-liter and 2.0-liter gasoline versions were officially sold in Ukraine. The first of the engines is equipped with a system of distributed fuel injection, and the second - direct (directly into the cylinders). Due to this, the 2.0-liter engine has a harder and noisier idle. All other modifications were imported by "gray" dealers and are extremely rare in our country.

The power units of used Avensis in our operating conditions can “eat up” oil. Bad gasoline leads to soot, deterioration of oil properties and accelerated wear of the cylinder-piston group. For this reason, minders of the branded service station often had to repair engines. Moreover, it is not possible to make a major overhaul - the cylinder blocks are made of aluminum alloys and it is impossible to machine them to the repair dimensions. You have to buy a new block or a "used" motor. As operating experience has shown, in order to avoid problems, it is advisable to change the oil after no more than 10 thousand km.
Avensis units are equipped with a proprietary VVT-i variable valve timing system and an ignition system with individual coils for each of the candles. These systems work reliably and without problems. Expensive spark plugs with iridium electrode tips are used in motors (original spare part - 240 UAH).

During operation, the fuel injection system needs periodic cleaning of the nozzles, throttle valve and air flow meter. Moreover, it is better not to do this on your own, but to entrust the work to specialists. The signal will be unstable idling. By a run of 100 thousand km, the front cover of the engine may lose tightness. At about the same time, it becomes necessary to replace the multi-ribbed attachment belt.

But the timing is not very demanding on maintenance - a durable metal chain is used. Once every 90 thousand km, it is recommended to check the thermal clearances of the valves, although they usually have to be adjusted no more often than after 180 thousand km.

Weaknesses of the car

Listen carefully!

Avensis is a front-wheel drive car equipped with a manual gearbox or automatic transmission, and both types of units are found in us in almost the same quantity. The automatic transmission of the "Japanese" is not the most modern - 4-speed, but at the same time it is endowed with the possibility of manual gear selection - Tiptronic.

The most trouble-free were "automatic". But in the "mechanics" there were cases of failure of the shaft support bearings. The malfunction is manifested by a characteristic hum while driving. In order not to run into a copy with a “rolled” manual gearbox, it is recommended to conduct a qualified car diagnostics.

There are no comments to the clutch equipped with a hydraulic drive. Maintenance of the "machine" consists in a regular (every 90 thousand km) oil change along with the filter, and "mechanics" - a lubricant change every 60 thousand km.

There are no boundaries for perfection…

Unlike its predecessor, the design of the second-generation steering Avensis was improved - the tie rods are interchangeable (previously - together with the steering gear). In general, they serve well: they can last 80-100 thousand km, and steering tips - at least 150 thousand km. However, over time, a knock may appear in the steering wheel caused by wear on the crosspiece or steering shaft mechanism.

Chassis Avensis is quite suitable for our roads - it is endowed with good energy consumption. Joints and hard bumps are worked out quietly and resiliently, it also copes with larger pits and patches. The car behaves confidently at high speeds. The steering is very "transparent" and allows you to feel good connection with the wheels even in emergency situations.

Suspension - independent with anti-roll bars. McPherson is used in front, and a two-lever design is used in the back. Most often (every 40-60 thousand km) on our roads you will have to change the bushings of the stabilizers, the struts last much longer - about 100 thousand km. The rear silent blocks of the front levers are no less able to hold out, but the front and ball bearings run almost 200 thousand km. In the rear suspension, the silent blocks of the upper arm serve the least (60-80 thousand km), the “gum” of the lower arm is more durable - they go at least 100 thousand km.

Increases the cost of maintenance of the suspension that the "gum" of the front and rear levers in the "original" are supplied assembled, and in the "non-original" silent blocks of the front levers can be purchased separately.

The brake system equipped with disc mechanisms (front - ventilated) is effective. Its maintenance consists in periodic (when replacing the pads) lubrication of the guide calipers. Unless the most active drivers have deformation of the brake discs. There are no claims to the reliability of the drum parking brake.

It's possible, but be careful...

Toyota Avensis is an excellent choice for sensible middle-aged and older people, perfect for the role of a family car. At the same time, its future owner must have a consistently high income - spare parts and maintenance of this "Japanese" are expensive. When buying a used Avensis, it is first of all important to find out the condition of potentially problematic units: the engine (does it “eat” oil) and the gearbox (whether the bearings in the “mechanics” are in good order).

Owner about Toyota Avensis

Been looking for a family car for a long time. As an alternative, I considered Opel Vectra, VW Passat, Honda Accord and Toyota Avensis. As a result, he chose Avensis. This model attracted me with rich equipment, a comfortable and spacious interior, as well as the image of a manufacturer known to many motorists, producing some of the most reliable cars. During the operation, this "Japanese" did not disappoint me - there were no serious problems with it. At the same time, it pleases with a soft suspension and high comfort. Of the comments, I note a considerable fuel consumption - a 2.0-liter engine with an "automatic" in the city "eats" approximately 13 liters per 100 km. The cost of spare parts and maintenance is quite high. To save money, I go to a familiar mechanic.

Body and interior
Avensis is characterized by high passive safety and rich equipment even in basic versions. The salon will please with workmanship, well-thought-out ergonomics and spaciousness. The peculiarity of our market is such that it is impossible to find any other modification other than a sedan. And for Avensis, expensive parts and maintenance. Over time, used copies may have problems with front optics. The salon is made very high quality, the only characteristic problem is that the heating of the front seats may fail.
Engine and transmission
Thanks to the VVT-i system, the engines are distinguished by good elasticity. Undemanding to maintenance and gas distribution mechanism. "Automatic" Tiptronic reliable and hassle-free. The choice of engines is small. In units, increased oil consumption is possible due to wear of the cylinder-piston group. In this case, there is no possibility to carry out a major overhaul. The need to use expensive candles with iridium tips and frequent cleaning of the fuel injection system. By 100 thousand km, the front cover of the engine loses its tightness. In the "mechanics" failure of the support bearings is possible.
Suspension, steering, brakes
The chassis is distinguished by good energy intensity, and the steering is informative. The front suspension is durable. On our roads, over time, the steering breaks. In the rear suspension, the "gum" of the upper arms differs in a small resource. With active driving, deformation of the brake discs is possible.
Alternative

The market value of the Accord is quite high. However, it is supported by the good quality of the car and the reliability of most components and assemblies. Perfect for lovers of active driving - it has good stability and dynamics. Accord maintenance is expensive. The choice of engines is small, there are only petrol versions on the market.

Compared to Avensis and Accord, sellers ask less for Mazda6, while it has more choice of modifications. Moreover, in our market it is really possible to meet not only a sedan, but also a liftback and station wagon. However, the reliability of this model is lower than the aforementioned "Japanese". There are also comments about corrosion resistance. But driving performance is not worse than that of competitors.

The 2nd generation Toyota Avensis family (factory index T250) appeared before the public in 2003, and in 2006 the car underwent a planned upgrade that affected the exterior, interior and technical component. The model lasted on the assembly line until 2008, after which a new generation was released.

The 2nd generation Avensis was available in three body styles, namely a sedan, a five-door liftback and a station wagon.

The length of the D-class machine is from 4630 to 4700 mm, height - from 1480 to 1525 mm, width - 1760 mm. The parameters of the wheelbase and ground clearance do not depend on the body solution - 2700 mm and 150 mm, respectively. The curb weight of the "Japanese" varies from 1245 to 1305 kg.

For the second generation Toyota Avensis, four petrol and the same number of diesel engines were offered. The gasoline part consists of atmospheric "fours" with a working volume of 1.6 to 2.4 liters, which produce from 110 to 163 horsepower and from 150 to 230 Nm of torque.
The line of turbodiesels includes four-cylinder engines with a volume of 2.0-2.2 liters and a potential of 114-174 "horses", generating 250-400 Nm of maximum torque.
The units went in tandem with a 5-speed “mechanics”, a 5- or 6-band “automatic”, but the drive was only front.

The “second” Avensis is based on the Toyota MC front-wheel drive platform, which implies the presence of McPherson strut struts on the front axle and a multi-link design with steering effect on the rear axle. The steering mechanism of the car is equipped with an electric booster, and all wheels are equipped with brakes with discs (ventilated at the front) and an anti-lock braking system.

The advantages of the 2nd generation Avensis include a solid appearance, a roomy and high-quality interior, comfortable suspension, stable behavior on the road, good equipment, inexpensive maintenance and availability of spare parts.

The disadvantages of the car are a weak head light (regular), modest ground clearance, mediocre dynamics and imperfect sound insulation.

At the end of 2002, the premiere of the second generation Toyota Avensis took place. Sales started in March 2003. Like many Toyota models of that time, the design was developed in a European vein by the ED2 studio, as a result of which there was nothing Japanese left in the exterior of the car.
Initially, 4 engines were offered: 1.6 and 1.8 of the ZZ family, 2.0 liter of the D4 family (with direct fuel injection), as well as a diesel of the D-4D family of the same volume. Production was established at a factory in England. In comparison with the previous generation model, a step forward in the field of safety has been taken. In 2003, the car scored 34 out of 36 cylinders in the Euroncap crash test, which at the time was considered one of the best results. Security guards were such systems as ABS, EBD,, VSC, TRC. Avensis was equipped with seven airbags, including the driver's knee airbag. Later, the list of available engines was replenished with diesel engines of the D-CAT family, as well as a gasoline engine of the D4 family with a volume of 2.4 liters. The main idea of the D-CAT diesel was to reduce harmful emissions by half: the power and torque were the same as those of the D-4D family of diesels.
The secret of such environmental friendliness lay in the DPNR (Diesel Particulate NOx Reduction) system, which was a filter-catalyst that reduces the emission of particulate matter, nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide. It is noteworthy that not a single element of the DPNR system needed to be replaced during the entire life of the vehicle. Avensis easily stepped into the Euro-4 environmental class. Even diesel engines of the D-4D generation were not supplied to Russia, not to mention D-CAT.
Two bodies were offered: a sedan and a station wagon (in Europe there was also a hatchback). The choice was offered MKP-5 or AKP-4, and later the list was replenished with AKP-5. In 2006, the model was restyled: the bumper and radiator grille became similar to Camry elements, the headlights sparkled with fashionable “lens” optics, the lights were hidden behind a common transparent glass, and LED turn indicators appeared in the larger mirrors. Changed minor details in the interior. In 2009, the third generation Avensis was introduced.

Engines:
1.6 (110 HP)
1.8 (129 HP)
2.0 (147 HP)
2.4 (163 HP)
2.0 D-4D (116 HP)
2.2 D-4D (148 - 175 hp)
