Volkswagen Golf (Volkswagen Golf)- the most successful model of the German concern Volkswagen. This model has been on the market with an unchanged concept for over 40 years, so it needs no introduction. Many of us have even developed an impression about him, they say, Golf is a reasonable choice and, for the city, that's it. Unfortunately, there are no such statistics. In general, it would be interesting to count how many times when discussing a car the phrase “yes, it would be better if I took a used Golf for this money” was uttered. And, here, how justified such a purchase will be, and what problems you will have to face after buying a Volkswagen Golf 6 with mileage, now we will try to figure it out.

A bit of history:

Most Volkswagen cars are named after winds or currents, and “Golf” is no exception, this name comes from the name of the warm current - the Gulf Stream (German: Golfstrom). The first generation of the model was released back in 1974 and lasted on the market for almost 10 years, it was discontinued in 1983. The main purpose of the release of this model was to maintain the status of a reliable public car, as well as to replace the obsolete Zhuk model, which at one time earned the status of a people's car. The design of the car was developed by the famous Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. The car was produced in four body types - three and five-door hatchback, station wagon, sedan (later called the Jetta) and convertible. The second generation of the car was produced from 1983 to 1992. In total, during this time, 6,300,987 hatchbacks and 1,708,390 sedans (Jetta) with various equipment came off the assembly line.

The third generation was presented at the Geneva auto show in 1991, and already in 1992 won the title of car of the year. Since the spring of 1992, official deliveries of cars to the CIS countries began. This generation lasted on the market until 1997. Volkswagen Golf 4 was produced from 1997 to 2004. The model received a fully galvanized body, a stabilization system and navigation, in addition, models such as the Audi A3, and. In total, more than 4,000,000 cars were sold during the production of the model. The Golf IV sedan was created in 1998, in the European market the car was named Bora, and not the Jetta IV or Vento II, as one might expect.

The fifth generation of the model was first presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003. Unlike its predecessors, the novelty was built on the new Volkswagen Group A5 (PQ35) platform. The release of the car lasted until 2009. Volkswagen Golf 6 debuted in October 2008 at the Paris Auto Show. Due to the fact that the sixth Golf has a common platform with the previous generation, there is an opinion among motorists that the novelty is a deep restyling of the fifth generation of the model, but, in fact, this is not the case. Volkswagen Golf 6 is made in a new way and is not a restyled version of the fifth generation. This generation lasted only 5 years on the market, which is the smallest indicator among all representatives of this model. The debut of the seventh generation of cars took place in the fall of 2012 at the Paris Auto Show. The car is assembled in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Finland, Japan and the USA

Problem areas and disadvantages of Volkswagen Golf 6 with mileage.

Like most modern cars, the paintwork of the body is quite delicate (water-based acrylic paints are used). After a couple of years of intensive use, the body is covered with scuffs, the bottom of the front doors near the front fender suffers the most. Also, the paint may be worn off at the points of contact of the door seals with the body and at the points of contact of the fenders and bumpers. This problem is not critical and can be easily eliminated by sticking a protective film. As for the corrosion resistance of the body, then, in general, it is not bad, but rust appears in places where the paint is chipped. Therefore, in order to avoid serious problems, the condition of the body must be carefully monitored.

In cars that are constantly sleeping outside, after several winters, the thresholds and lower edges of the doors may begin to corrode. Also, during the inspection, it is worth checking for corrosion the floor spars in the front and near the rear axle. Due to the low cost of body parts, it is not always possible to identify damaged elements as a result of an accident (as a rule, a damaged part is not restored, but replaced). When inspecting, carefully look at the dimensions of the seams, and pay attention to hidden cavities. The windshield received a lot of criticism - it is soft and quickly covered with scratches. To extend the life of the glass, it is recommended to install wipers with softer rubber than the original.

With the onset of severe frosts, some specimens experience malfunctions in the operation of the central lock - the front doors do not open from the key fob (most often the driver's door). To eliminate the disadvantage, it is necessary to replace the lock drive, in some cases it was necessary to change the lock. Another cost item can be the gas tank cap, it is quite fragile and easily breaks off with an awkward hand movement. Over time, cracks appear on the hose going to the rear washer, the presence of moisture in the rear optics will help identify the problem. The plastic of the radiator grille installed in the front bumper with the onset of cold weather becomes very “dubbed”, because of this, even from a slight blow, it breaks to smithereens. Not famous for their reliability and plastic mount bumpers (break even with a minor accident). The sealant on the front cups loses its elasticity over time and cracks, as a result of which corrosion can appear on the seams.

Power units

For Volkswagen Golf 6, a large number of gasoline and diesel powertrains are available:

Disadvantages that are common to all motors:

Poor tightness of the pipes of the cooling system. Most often, the disease manifests itself in the cold season, fluid leakage occurs in the area of the temperature sensor. In most cases, the problem disappeared with an increase in temperature. As a result of the struggle "for environmental friendliness", the engines lost their usual warm-up at idle. You can warm the engine for an hour, but not the fact that it will warm up. Tapping and slight crackling in the right side of the engine compartment, after starting the engine, is due to the unfortunate location of the fuel pipes. To get rid of annoying sounds, you need to install a special seal.

atmospheric gasoline engines

The stock 1.4 engine is well known to Volkswagen lovers and will be the best option if you are a calm driver and do not expect peppy dynamics from the car. The engine is reliable and will not present unpleasant surprises up to 200-250 thousand km, if you do not try to squeeze all the juices out of it (operation in the “slipper on the floor” mode significantly reduces the resource of this engine). Also, the atmospheric power unit with a volume of 1.6 turned out to be quite successful, this engine is a little “more cheerful” than 1.4. This engine does not tolerate “bad” gasoline; when using low-quality fuel, the engine may work unstably, and there are also problems with starting. With pronounced symptoms, most likely you will have to change the fuel injectors, since the cheaper operation - cleaning the injectors - does not cure the engine. Buying one nozzle from dealers will cost about 100 USD.

Another feature characteristic of this motor is increased vibration at idle. Also, problems with the throttle can be recorded as weak points (regular cleaning is required). Common problems that are typical for naturally aspirated engines are coking of piston rings, destruction of plastic pipes, increased oil consumption on cars with a mileage of more than 150,000 km (replacement of valve seals is required), oil leakage through hardened crankshaft seals. The average engine life before overhaul is 300-350 thousand km, with proper care, the engine can last 500,000 km.

Turbocharged powertrains

Turbocharged engines of the TSI family have good dynamics with a fairly low fuel consumption, but, with reliability, they are not so smooth. At the weakest engine 1.2, the timing chain drive is not famous for its reliability. The need to immediately visit the service will be prompted by a diesel roar and increased noise at startup. On most copies presented on the secondary market, the chain has been changed to a modernized one. Also, along with the chain, the front cover of the engine was also changed, it differs in that the lower gear has tides that prevent the chain from slipping at the slightest loosening. Since 2011, a modernized timing belt has been installed on motors with a completely new chain and gear design. Another common problem is the failure of the electromagnetic turbine actuator. At the same time, the turbine itself is capable of serving 120-150 thousand km.

Many owners complain about increased oil consumption on almost new cars, but there are also those who, even after 100-120 thousand km, have practically no oil consumption. Not infrequently, the cause of owners' headaches is the high-pressure fuel pump (the pusher and roller wear out) and the wear of the camshaft cam. Also, the weak point of this power unit is direct injection fuel equipment, the problem is aggravated by the complexity of diagnostics. If, when buying this ailment, “blink, in the future you will have to pay dearly for it. Of the advantages of the motor, one can note a decent piston resource, the reliability of the cylinder head and low fuel consumption on the highway - about 4 liters per hundred.

The 1.4 engine, like the weaker power unit, is not without problems with the timing chain, increased oil consumption and fuel equipment. In addition, there are problems with the reliability of the turbine. The most powerful version is equipped with dual supercharging - a compressor plus a turbocharger, which significantly increases the cost of repairs. In fairness, it should be noted that on many copies the problematic part was replaced with an upgraded one under warranty. The phase regulator often bothers, symptoms - in the first seconds of starting a cold engine, a strong crack is heard from under the hood. Fixing the problem does not guarantee that it will not happen again after a couple of thousand kilometers.

Also, the destruction of pistons can be attributed to common problems. The reasons are the unsuccessful design of the piston rings and the pistons themselves, plus the liquid intercooler does not adequately cool the charge air due to the contamination of the heat exchanger in the intake manifold (it is clogged with oil sludge from the ventilation system). Also, the problem can be provoked by insufficient engine cooling due to the failure of the electric pump (the breakdown is accompanied by extraneous sounds in the engine compartment, similar to jumping the timing chain, the coolant level drops, the Check Engine lights up) or a dirty radiator. Rarely enough, but, nevertheless, sensor failures and malfunctions in the engine control unit occur. Most often, this trouble befalls owners who like to experiment with firmware.

When using low-quality fuel, the ignition coils wear out prematurely. The most powerful motor has 160 hp. cases of failure of the crankshaft liners are not uncommon; due to the heavy load, they wear out quickly. To protect the engine from most troubles, change spark plugs, ignition modules in a timely manner, monitor the condition of the cooling system, clean the intercooler twice a year, monitor the condition of the timing chain and refuel only at proven gas stations.

The 1.8 engine, like the engines mentioned above, has problems with the “oil burner” and the timing chain, but, unlike weaker engines, here the chain can jump when the engine is turned off. The 2.0 power unit is represented by two types: the old unit of the EA113 series with a timing belt drive and the new EA888 with a chain. Old motors are quite reliable and have no problems with the timing and increased oil consumption. And, here, the engines of the new model do not have the best reputation. Traditionally, for TSI series engines, there are problems with the reliability of the timing chain (on average, the chain starts to bother after 100,000 km), ignition and injection control systems. Also, it is worth noting oil leaks, fogging of the dampers in the intake manifold and higher maintenance and repair costs compared to less powerful engines.

Diesel

Despite the fact that diesel engines have established themselves as reliable units, they cannot be called problem-free. In most cases, low-quality diesel fuel becomes the culprit for expensive engine repairs. Due to poor fuel, the injectors, the EGR valve (sometimes the valve control electronics fail), the injection pump and the particulate filter do not work out their resource. Replacing any of these items is expensive. Diesel units are equipped with a timing belt drive, the manufacturer recommends changing the belt with tensioners every 160-180 thousand km, but many owners claim that it is better to replace the belt every 120-150 thousand km. Simultaneously with the timing, it is also desirable to replace the V-ribbed belt, since there have been cases when, after a break, it fell under the timing belt, as a result of which the pistons met the valves.

Transmission

In the secondary market, you can find Volkswagen Golf 6 with mechanics and 6 and 7-speed DSG robotic transmissions. Much has already been said about the disadvantages of DSG, therefore, in this article I will list only the most common ones. A small resource of clutch and mechatronics (70-100 thousand km, when operating in a metropolis, repairs may be required much earlier). In both cases, more than 1000 USD will have to be paid for the repair. Twitching, jumps in gears are symptoms of the presence of one of the ailments. Also, a weak differential can be noted, the failure of which often leads to the destruction of the automatic transmission. With untimely maintenance of the box, the wear of the axis of the satellites and their gears is accelerated.

The mechanics are reliable, but not perfect. Among the main disadvantages, premature wear of the bearings can be noted (the problem was not widespread and in most cases was eliminated under warranty). Failure of the synchronizer clutch of the 1st and 2nd gears, this ailment is manifested by increased noise at idle, when the clutch pedal is pressed, the noise disappears (the same symptoms appear when the release bearing fails). Treatment - replacement of the clutch. The Sachs clutch over time begins to “howl” (rumble) strongly in 1st gear. This trouble is a feature of the part and is eliminated only by replacing the clutch. Not often, but still, in the secondary market you can find a Volkswagen Golf 6 with all-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is implemented using the Haldex 4 electromagnetic clutch, which is installed on most crossovers and has proven itself well.

Weaknesses of the running Volkswagen Golf 6

Volkswagen Golf 6 has four suspension versions - standard, reinforced, sporty and adaptive. Most often, cars with standard independent suspension are presented on the market: in front - MacPherson strut, in the back - multi-link. The bushings and stabilizer struts are the first to become unusable, on average, their resource is 50-70. Wheel bearings are able to last 100-130 thousand km, but there have been cases when the replacement of the rear bearings was required after 30,000 km. A little longer, up to 150,000 km, silent blocks and ball bearings live. Original shock absorbers, with careful operation, nursed for 120-150 thousand km. The rear suspension does not require investment more than once every 100,000 km, despite this, it is recommended to do diagnostics and alignment once a year.

The fact is that the “killed” suspension, in most cases, does not rattle, but, on the other hand, quickly finishes off serviceable nodes. The steering system is reliable, you can blame it, perhaps, for the presence of minor electrical problems. Steering tips and rods, on average, go about 100-150 thousand km, when using larger wheels, their resource rarely exceeds 50-70 thousand km. The braking system is traditionally reliable, one set of brake pads is enough for 40-50 thousand km, discs are enough for 2-3 sets of pads.

Salon

The interior of the Volkswagen Golf 6 is simple and concise, but at the same time it is made of fairly good materials. As for sound insulation, it is one of the best in the class, only the presence of crickets in the cabin is frustrating (they appear in cars with a mileage of more than 70,000 km). For drivers with a weight of 90 kg or more, after a couple of years of operation, the foam rubber is squeezed on the seat and the adjustment mechanisms fail (relevant for cars in a cheap configuration). Also, there are complaints about the wear resistance of the fabric upholstery of the chairs, so if you want to keep their presentation, be sure to use covers.

Among the disadvantages of salon equipment, one can note the tendency of the air conditioner condenser to form corrosion, in order to avoid problems it must be washed a couple of times a year. Often, the stove fan becomes an additional expense item, most often the cause of the fan failure is the ingress of moisture from melted snow between the hood and the windshield. If the heater fan only comes on at high speed, the resistor needs to be replaced. Rarely, but, nevertheless, there are cases of failure of the Delphi air conditioning compressor. Electronics, in general, are reliable, but can catch "glitches"; In most cases, it is treated by restarting the system.

Outcome:

Volkswagen Golf 6 is a good car for its price, even despite a number of shortcomings in TSI engines and a small resource of the DSG box. The modern version of the model has long lost its status as a trouble-free German car, despite this, you are unlikely to find a person who, after several years of owning the sixth Golf, will say that this is a bad car.

If you are the owner of this car model, please describe the problems that you had to face during the operation of the car. Perhaps it is your review that will help readers of our site when choosing a car.

Sincerely, editors Autoavenue

More than 40 years in a single concept! Volkswagen Golf needs no introduction. Many of us have already developed the conviction that Golf is a reasonable choice, and what is needed for the city. It’s a pity there are no such statistics, but it would be interesting to count how many times the phrase was said in the world, saying, “I would rather take a used Golf for that kind of money.” But are those who say so not mistaken in their beliefs?

Let's find out using the example of the 6th generation Volkswagen Golf 2011 with a mileage of 60 thousand kilometers and with a manual transmission that has undergone chip tuning of the Volkswagen engine. Sellers ask for a car, on average, 580-600 thousand rubles.

Salon

About how the interior is made, and what sensations you get behind the wheel, you can’t compose ballads. The interior is simple and concise. But on the other hand, it is made of more or less high-quality materials, so nothing creaks or dangles. There is nothing to complain about here. In terms of suspension and comfort, the Golf 6 generation is set up as it should. Is that for our roads a little harsh. But the sound insulation among classmates is one of the best.

Engine

Those who choose the 6th Golf often argue with which engine to take it with: a naturally aspirated 1.6 or a turbocharged 1.4 liter. Moreover, the number of supporters of both is approximately the same. The conservative public, who appreciate simplicity and reliability, advises taking an atmospheric installation, and those for whom dynamics and fuel consumption are more important, advise taking 1.4 TSI, because. In all respects, this motor really wins. But in fairness, it must be said that he will have more pitfalls.

One of the weak points of the 1.4 TSI engine is the “knock and ring” at startup. This is due to the wear of the timing chain. It is treated by replacing the chain and tensioner. And pleasure is expensive. And in general, the official price tag for a car of this class is too biting.

Another weak point is jerking when accelerating at 2500-3000 rpm. Often this is due to a stuck turbocharger wastegate vacuum actuator. It is treated by replacing the repair kit or the entire turbocharger.

box

Now the gearbox. The mechanics are considered reliable, let's discuss the DSG box better. The fact that all her ailments are in the past is a myth, as well as the fact that she will travel 100 thousand kilometers without problems. The only plus is a 5 year warranty (or 150 thousand kilometers) for the clutch and mechatronics. By the way, today dealers are installing a new type of clutch and “filling in” new software. In general, the DSG is not a bad box. It’s just that you have to pay for its speed and efficiency (claimed acceleration to hundreds of 9.5 seconds, fuel consumption in the city is 8.2 liters).

Suspension

Let's move on to the suspension. Independent front, "multi-link" rear, electronic power steering. In general, the 6th generation Volkswagen Golf is reliable. Most often, dealers come with complaints about stabilizer bushings and silent blocks. This is perhaps her main pain.

household sores

The largest number of criticism, oddly enough, goes to the stove. It is discussed in every Internet forum. The air conditioning compressor, a sore of the early generations, is no longer so noticeable. The question is how the interior warms up in general. All Volkswagen cars do not require engine warm-up, i.e., as they say, start and go. Therefore, the interior warms up gradually, “on the go”, forcing you to shiver from the cold for some time.

Buying a new car

Let me remind you that for our Volkswagen Golf of the 6th generation of 2011, sellers will forgive 580-600 thousand rubles. On average, to put it in order (repair of the running gear and elimination of cosmetic defects), you need to spend about 30-40 thousand rubles. As for buying a new car, dealers sell the 7th generation Golf - a more modern, technologically advanced and, of course, expensive model. In a similar configuration, a car costs 1240 thousand rubles, which means that the difference in price, taking into account the money spent on repairs, is significant.

In general, you can hardly find a person who, after several years of owning Golf, will say that it was an extremely bad idea. Yes, he can upset with the lack of charisma, drive, and maybe even break someone's confidence in the reliability of German technology. The car has weaknesses. But if you carefully check everything before buying it, then be sure that it will not cause problems for a long time.

The 6th generation Volkswagen Golf hatchback debuted at the Paris Motor Show 2008, and the car appeared on the Russian market in the summer of next year. The next generation of Golf has become a continuation of one of the most successful models of the automaker from Wolfsburg.

And although each new generation of VW Golf was developed by different design groups, related features in the appearance of all models are visible to the naked eye. So the sixth Golf has the same proportions as its predecessors, a similar front design and a characteristic rear strut.

Despite the apparent simplicity of style, the Volkswagen Golf 6 does not look budget or cheap. The flared shoulder line makes the hatchback visually more squat and stretched, although its length, compared to its predecessor, has even been slightly reduced.

The new VW Golf VI has a length equal to 4,199 (the size of the wheelbase is 2,578 mm), a width of 1,779 mm, a height of 1,479 mm, and a ground clearance (clearance) of 150 mm. The hatchback's trunk volume is 350 liters, but increases to 1,305 liters when the rear seatbacks are folded down.

Salon Volkswagen Golf 6 creates the feeling that you are in a car, at least a class higher. The dashboard with two deep wells, the sophisticated design of the dashboard made of expensive materials with aluminum trim elements, the swift lines in the design of the door cards - all this still remains a role model among numerous competitors.

Previously, the Golf was supplied to the Russian market only with gasoline engines, but the sixth generation model was an exception: from now on, in the range of power units there was a place for a 2.0-liter turbodiesel with a capacity of 110 hp, which, however, is available only in tandem with a 5- step mechanics.

As for gasoline units, their choice is much wider. The base is a 1.4-liter aspirated with a modest return of 80 hp. It is paired with an atmospheric engine with a working volume of 1.6 liters with a capacity of 102 hp. The latter, unlike the former, can be ordered not only paired with a five-speed mechanics, but also paired with a 7-band DSG robot.

Also in the line for the Volkswagen Golf 6 there are two TSI petrol turbo engines with a volume of 1.2 (85 and 105 hp) and 1.4 (122 hp) liters. As an alternative to a robotic transmission, they are offered traditional mechanics, but already six-speed (with the exception of the 85-horsepower engine).

For those for whom the power of standard engines is not enough, it is possible to buy a 210-horsepower two-liter modification of the Golf GTI, or a top version of the Golf R hatchback with all-wheel drive and a 2.0-liter TSI engine that produces 255 “horses”. Both variants are available in both three- and five-door body styles.

The price of the most affordable 80-horsepower Volkswagen Golf 6 in a three-door body in the initial Trendline configuration is 551,000 rubles. Its equipment includes 7 airbags, ABS, on-board computer, front power windows, electrically heated mirrors and central locking with remote control.

Five-door Golf in similar modifications is more expensive by an average of 23,000 rubles. For the latter, an R-Line body kit with bumper and sill trims, a spoiler and exclusive rims is available.

Regardless of the chosen configuration, engine and body type, buyers have the opportunity to upgrade the car with a variety of different options for an extra charge, including ESP, light and rain sensors, a rear-view camera, standard navigation, a CD changer, and more.

Volkswagen Golf IV. Manufacturer: Volkswagen, Germany. Year of manufacture - 2011. In operation "Behind the wheel" - since December 2011. Mileage at the time of the report - 65,000 km.

Previous publications about the VW Golf from the ZR park

Summer for our Golf is like a shortened working day. Summer tires require minimal break-in, so the mileage isn't as high, and life in general isn't as stressful as it is in the winter.

However, in the midst of summer, almost simultaneously with the publication of our last report on the “Golf” (ЗР, 2014, No. 7), the car began to voice road bumps on the right side. Light clicks on bumps are usually produced by the tie rod end, more deaf - by the ball joint.

We checked it - it is true: the right tip of the steering wheel slightly plays. After making sure that the backlash is minimal and does not affect safety, and clicks are heard only on a broken road, we decided to tolerate an extraneous sound until the next maintenance. Fortunately, up to the mark "60,000", judging by the odometer, there were a couple of thousand kilometers.

I like the exterior mirrors of modest size and good shape: they provide a sufficient rear view image and at the same time do not impair side visibility.

Service work was expensive. The replacement of engine oil, filters and spark plugs provided for by the regulations was supplemented by the replacement of both steering rod ends. Naturally, this operation required the adjustment of the angles of the front wheels. In addition, servicemen strongly recommended flushing the entire fuel system, including injectors.

We recalled that on the previous car (Skoda Octavia with the same engine) we did not perform such operations, however, at a mileage of 90,000 km, we changed the electric fuel pump, which, as the autopsy showed, “ran out” due to not very clean gasoline. We decided not to repeat the mistakes of youth and increase the life of an expensive unit, relying on proactive cleaning of the fuel system.

The funniest place for little things is a mug holder, and even with a cutout for a handle. In between test runs, she needs one hundred percent!

As a result, almost 25,000 rubles had to be paid for the service. How many thousands of kilometers we managed to push back the upcoming replacement of the fuel pump, time will tell.

They decided to save money on the front brake pads by buying a TRW kit for 1690 rubles instead of the original ones, which are twice as expensive. Yes, and replacing it on your own (not such a complicated procedure) is also savings.

They did the same with the wiper blades - they found a completely high-quality option, which cost a little more than 1,500 rubles. Having made sure that the braking efficiency of the car has not deteriorated, and the brushes clean the glass regularly, we can state that when servicing even such thoroughbred cars as the Volkswagen Golf, you can save a little.

For three years, I have not found a use for the ceiling pocket: glasses cannot be squeezed in there, and there is not enough depth to securely store driver's documents.

And one more very interesting observation. In the third year of service, small (two or three square centimeters) chips appeared on the bumpers, exposing black plastic. Having carefully studied the locations of the spots (practically at the corners), we came to the conclusion that the paint peeled off at the points of contact of the machine with the cones during the test rearrangement. There are no such chips on the body.

Volkswagen Golf is not just a means of transportation on four wheels, but a car that has absorbed an entire era. The famous hatchback ranks second in terms of sales in the world - over 40,000,000 copies have been sold in 40 years. Western experts praise the sixth generation of Golf, saying that the Germans once again hit the target and supposedly the car has practically no weak points. But how things really are with the reliability of this model, now let's try to figure it out.

Common Volkswagen Golf 6 malfunctions with mileage

Paintwork- Today, in order to save money, many manufacturers use water-based acrylic paint and Volkswagen is no exception. The paint made using this technology is quite soft, and therefore scratches and chips appear on it very quickly. The most vulnerable places on the Volkswagen Golf 6 are the bumper, hood, front arches and sills.

doorways- paint in places of contact with rubber door seals is erased to metal. To permanently solve the problem, you need to stick a protective film.

body iron- in general, the corrosion coating of the body is at a good level, despite this, it is not worth leaving chipped paint unattended for a long time, since the “bugs” will not take long to wait. In cars that often spend the night on the street, pockets of rust may appear over time on the edges of the doors and floor spars (most often in the area of the rear axle). Finding out whether a car was involved in an accident is sometimes quite problematic, the fact is that replacing individual damaged body elements is cheaper than restoring. Therefore, when selecting, check the symmetry of the gaps and the condition of the mounting bolts.

Windshield rather weak, because of this, over the years it is covered with a large number of scratches and chips. In order to extend the life of the glass, it is recommended to use soft wiper blades.

central locking- in winter it may not work correctly (not all doors open). Repair - replacement of the electric drive of the lock of a non-working door.

Fuel tank hatch- due to the fact that its fastening is quite fragile, it will not be difficult to break the hatch.

Fogging rear optics- reason: the hose supplying fluid to the rear window washer is cracking.

Front bumper– Bumper mount and grille are made of fragile plastic.

sealant over time, it dries up and cracks, if it is not replaced in a timely manner, pockets of corrosion appear on the welds (the front glasses of the car are the most problematic place).

Weaknesses of power units

Volkswagen Golf 6 has an impressive line of powertrains. The motors of the German manufacturer have always been famous for their good resource, but the language does not turn to call them problem-free, however, let's talk about everything in order.

Features of all power units:

Coolant leak- in the cold season, antifreeze leaks appear in the engine cooling system at the pipe connections (most often in the area of the fuel level sensor). As a rule, after the engine warms up, the problem resolves itself.

Engine warm-up- as part of the struggle "for environmental friendliness", all power units are deprived of the usual warm-up at idle. Even after an hour of operation at idle, the engine is unlikely to warm up to operating temperature.

Knocking and grinding after starting the engine– as a rule, unpleasant sounds come from the side of the front passenger's feet. The reason is the feature of fastening the fuel line in front of the car. The problem was so widespread that the manufacturer had to produce special seals. Installing seals solves the problem for many years.

Disadvantages of MPI series motors

This type of powertrain is well known to VAG fans and is the most reliable. The main problems are: coking of piston rings, plastic pipes are destroyed over time, after 150,000 km oil consumption increases significantly (the problem is solved by replacing valve seals), crankshaft oil seals leak. With proper maintenance, their resource is 350-450 thousand km.

To the disadvantages of the motor 1.4 only its weak power can be attributed, and if you do not try to squeeze all the juice out of it, this engine will last 250-300 thousand km without problems.

1.6 liter engine more dynamic, but has capricious fuel equipment - the use of "bad" gasoline increases the likelihood of problems with starting and the stability of the engine. Often, to eliminate the disease, it is necessary to change the injection elements (the seats of the nozzle needles wear out). The throttle body needs to be cleaned periodically. Symptoms - under load, there is a feeling as if the car “chokes”, does not pull, the engine starts, and then immediately stalls. If the engine overheats, there is a high probability of cracking the head of the block.

Power units of the TSI series

This type of engine has good dynamic performance with moderate fuel consumption. Common disadvantages include: a small resource of the timing chain (in 2011, a modernized chain with a large resource appeared on sale), “oil burner”, unreliability of fuel equipment (problems in the early stages are practically impossible to diagnose) and high-pressure fuel pump (pusher and rollers), premature wear of the camshaft cam, plus, the complexity of diagnosis and repair can be added to everything.

Motor 1.2 calling a "vegetable" does not turn the tongue: it has good dynamic performance, despite the fact that fuel consumption is no more than 8 liters in the city. In addition to all of the above possible troubles for this power unit, the electromagnetic actuator of the turbine may fail ahead of schedule.

For a 1.4 engine, in addition to problems with the timing and fuel equipment, the turbine is not famous for its reliability. The top version of the engine (160 hp) was equipped with a double supercharger (compressor + turbocharger) - the repair of this unit is several times more expensive than usual. Quite often, the problematic part was changed under warranty.

 • The phase regulator is another weak point, if it is faulty, a strong crack appears when starting a cold engine. Repair does not guarantee that the problem will not recur after 3-5 thousand kilometers.
 • The piston group is the most serious problem that car owners with this power unit may encounter - coking of the piston ring grooves and destruction of the pistons. Quite often, the problem is exacerbated by contamination of the heat exchanger in the intake manifold with oily slag from the ventilation system. Also, the reason for the destruction of the pistons can be a failed pump (metal clicks resembling a chain jump will tell about the malfunction of the pump) and severe contamination of the engine cooling radiator.
 • ECU - may surprise in the form of software failures. As a rule, this trouble befalls fans of chip tuning.

Volkswagen Golf 6 with 1.8 engine not a frequent guest in the secondary market, the fact is that cars with such an engine were produced for a little more than 2 years (from 2009 to 2011). Of the common ailments, only “oil burner” and stretching of the timing chain can be noted, unlike other power units, here the chain can jump when the engine is turned off.

2 liter engine presented in two versions: old - EA113 and new - EA888. The old version of the engine, unlike the new one, was equipped with a timing belt drive and is considered quite reliable (there are no problems with the timing and oil burner). The EA888 series engine is the most problematic - compression rings lie down, pistons can burn out because of this (to restore the motor, you will have to sharpen the block, fortunately, it is cast iron), often there are problems with the pump and thermostat. Also, the disadvantages include the unsuccessful design of the crankcase ventilation system, oil pump and balancer shafts, the limited resource of the high-pressure fuel pump (drives are destroyed), the capricious fuel system and valve slagging features.

Disadvantages of diesel engines:

Diesel power units are reliable, the only thing that can shake their “health” is low-quality diesel fuel: nozzles, EGR valve, high-pressure fuel pump, particulate filter are delivered ahead of schedule. This type of engine has a timing belt drive, the interval for replacing the belt and tensioners is every 160-170 thousand km, but "experienced" motorists do not believe in such a belt resource and urge to change it after 120-140 thousand km. The V-ribbed belt should not be tightened with the replacement either, the fact is that if it breaks, it can fall under the timing belt with all the ensuing consequences.

Transmission

Manual Transmission- despite the fact that mechanics looks preferable in terms of reliability, it has a couple of weaknesses:

 • Premature wear of bearings - the problem was not of a massive nature and, as a rule, was eliminated under warranty.
 • 1st and 2nd gear synchronizer clutch - if there is a malfunction at idle, extraneous noises appear, which disappear when the clutch is pressed (similar symptoms are observed if there are problems with the release bearing). Repair - replacement of the clutch is required.
 • SACHS clutch - after 50-70 thousand km, it may begin to “howl” (rumble) in first gear. It is treated only by replacing the clutch (it is better to give preference to another brand).

Robotic gearbox DSG - quite a lot has been said about the reliability of this transmission, unfortunately, most of the reviews are negative.

 • The most common malfunction is clutch and mechatronics failure, when operating a car in a metropolis, they can fail after 60,000 thousand km, on cars operated outside big cities, the box resource, with timely maintenance, can be 150-170 thousand km. Symptoms of a transmission failure are jerking, twitching when shifting gears.
 • Differential - can also cause serious damage. As a result of its malfunction, the automatic transmission is destroyed.
 • Satellites and their gears - if the gearbox is not serviced in time, the wear of their axis is accelerated.

Suspension reliability Volkswagen Golf 6

Four types of suspension are available for the Volkswagen Golf 6 - standard, sporty, reinforced and adaptive. As a rule, cars with standard suspension are presented on the secondary market.

Average resource of suspension consumables:

 • Stabilizer struts - 50-70 thousand km.
 • Wheel bearings - front up to 120,000 km, rear ones can start to buzz after 30 thousand km.
 • Shock absorbers - 120-150 thousand km.
 • Silent blocks - 140-160 thousand km.
 • Rear suspension arms - 100-150 thousand km, the peculiarity of the rear suspension is that it does not rattle even in a "killed" state, but quickly finishes off serviceable parts, so it is recommended to periodically diagnose and do a wheel alignment.

Steering- there are no serious complaints about the reliability of the steering, sometimes owners complain about minor failures in the electronics. The resource of tips and rods depends on the diameter of the installed wheels: on stock "rollers" - 100-150 thousand km, when using large diameter disks - 50-80 thousand km.

brakes- no complaints about the brake system. The pads run 50-70 thousand km, the discs wear out after 2-3 sets of pads.

Salon Disadvantages

It is worth noting the good quality of the interior finishing materials and sound insulation (the best in this class), but there are still a couple of jambs here - after 3-5 years of operation, crickets appear, under the overall drivers (more than 90 kg) the foam rubber of the seats is pressed through in a couple of years, wears out quickly fabric upholstery. On cars in a poor configuration, the mechanisms for adjusting the front seats fail over time.

Electrical equipment:

air conditioner condenser- "dies" early enough due to the appearance of corrosion in it. In order to avoid unexpected costs, the condenser must be flushed 1-2 times a year.

oven fan motor- the weak point here is the resistor, if it fails, the fan turns on only at maximum speed. The cure is to replace the resistor. Also, the fan motor can fail due to the ingress of moisture from melted snow between the glass and the hood.

"Glitches"– from time to time, minor failures are observed in the electronics, as a rule, they are eliminated by restarting the car.

Conclusion:

Due to the fact that the Volkswagen Golf 6 is quite far ahead of its competitors in all respects, this model is one of the most popular in its class. But, as operating experience has shown, such an accelerated "progress" had a negative impact on the reliability and resource of many nodes. It cannot be said that the car is completely unreliable and constantly requires repair, since the above troubles are likely and are unlikely to befall the same car in a crowd. If you are looking for a reliable Volkswagen Golf 6, then the best option for buying would be a car with a 1.6 naturally aspirated engine paired with mechanics.

If you have experience in operating this car model, please tell us what problems and difficulties you had to face. Perhaps it is your review that will help readers of our site when choosing a car.
