In addition, we do not need to compare overclocking dynamics, but completely different things. At the same time, we will find out which power unit is better suited to Kalina for storming rough terrain.

ORANGE SUN

Salons of VAZ cars have always been too serious, if not gloomy. And "Cross" with its orange theme in the interior is a real treat! Such an interior is pleasing to the eye and looks more attractive than the interior of a conventional station wagon in a richer configuration. Moreover, other Kalina orange is not supposed to be - exclusive! And the Cross has other seats - they have a different upholstery, cushion density, side support rollers and even different headrests.

I sit behind the wheel. The chair is quite rigid, quite narrow and provides a higher seating position than in other Kalinas. At first it seems not the most convenient, but once you get used to it, you understand - not bad! And the longer you drive, the more you imbue with respect: fatigue on the road, of course, comes, but the body does not hurt. In this "saddle" is not very comfortable only for full drivers.

I moved to the usual Kalina: the seat cushion is wide, but absolutely amorphous - as if you are falling into a hole. And there is almost no lateral support. And, oddly enough, the gray upholstery turned out to be more branded than the orange.

MORE THAN A CENTIMETER

How much "Cross" is higher than the usual "Kalina"? The official website says: "The ground clearance of the Lada Kalina Cross station wagon has been increased by 23 mm - of which 16 mm was given by the upgraded suspension and another 7 mm were added by tires with an increased profile height." And in fact?

Let's measure the main geometric parameters. But first, let's clear up the controversy.

Cross

The fact is that the cars fell into our hands on a variety of winter tires, and, what is worse, dimensions not provided by the factory. Therefore, we evaluated the geometry on the same set of dimensions 185 / 55R15 - in order to catch the difference exclusively “in terms of metal”.

Detailed results can be found in the table. For the impatient, we inform you: "Cross" is really higher than the usual "Kalina", but only by 10 mm. Another 7 mm would have given the “Cross” tires prescribed by the plant in dimensions 195 / 55R15. Total - 17 mm instead of the promised 23 mm. But for this result, you need to thank the upgraded suspension.

The springs of the "Cross" are the same as on a conventional station wagon, but their support cups are offset by 16 mm. Of course, the characteristics of the struts, which are made on the basis of gas-filled shock absorbers of the 21928 family, have been corrected. And it is easy to recognize them by the code on the factory sticker. Those for "Cross" - with the index "-50". The designation of the front struts is 21928-2905002-50 and 21928-2905003-50, and the rear shock absorbers are 21928-2915004-50.

Already on the highway, "Cross" is able to pleasantly surprise those who had a chance to ride on front-wheel drive Lada. The source of joy is the pendant! Dense, energy-intensive, but not shaking. And most importantly - there is no traditional rattling when driving through small bumps and other characteristic sounds of a front-wheel drive VAZ chassis. Gas-filled struts with upgraded rebound dampers, reduced internal friction and original valve settings do the trick.

Does not annoy creaking and upholstery. Of course, the noise has not gone away at all: winter tires itch, the engine grumbles, the gearbox howls. Transmission noise is not very annoying, but now it stands out clearly against the general quiet background.

The usual station wagon is the exact opposite. Noise from the transmission is minimal - thanks in large part to the Jatco "automatic". But the suspension is talkative, as in the good old days of all front-wheel drive VAZs. It is also quite dense, but still softer than that of Cross. On irregularities, a slight buildup of the body from bow to stern is noticeable, which we did not notice at the Cross. And the salon upset with an inexplicable clatter in the area of ​​\u200b\u200bthe back door, although the car is brand new. Unstable build quality?

ICE

We imitated typical roads of the Russian hinterland at the Dmitrovsky auto-polygon - there was plenty of compacted snow and bare ice. The eight-valve Kalina Cross in the "Norma" configuration and with a manual gearbox is addressed to those who do not need electronic assistants. Of these benefits - only anti-lock brakes.

I liked the work of ABS on icy surfaces both in general and in particular. Imagine a long descent. One of the most unpleasant situations for a front-wheel drive car in these conditions is blocked driving (they are also steered) wheels and a stalled engine (the gear is on!). On the "Cross" with ABS, you do not need to meticulously dose the force on the brake pedal: press it - and that's it, the car will not turn into an unguided projectile. Otherwise, "Cross" provides freedom in the entire range of speeds. Who knows how, can ride in slips, since the “Cross” is well controlled.

The motor, which is not the most structurally advanced at the present time, allows you to drive tight, preventing slippage. Say, on a slippery six percent rise, you can, having pulled the car from its place, immediately tuck in second gear and crawl up almost at idle speed. The main thing is not to squeeze the gas, so as not to break the wheels into slipping.

And just Kalina with a 16‑valve engine and an “automatic” has in this case an electronic stabilization systemcombined with traction control - this is the prerogative of cars in the maximum configuration “Lux” (on modestly equipped versions there is only ABS). Here delicate throttling is not required. Moved to Drive - and trample the gas pedal. The electronics will do everything by itself, and the car will crawl uphill without slipping. But she will not let you frolic in slips at high speeds. You can turn off the ESP, but at a speed of 50 km / h it will automatically turn on again. Therefore, during intensive acceleration with the ESP disabled, do not forget that the electronics that wake up at 50 km / h can sharply cut off the traction on the wheels.

Where there is more snow, you accelerate a little and scratch further with a slight slip - the Cross confidently crawls forward.

Stuck? It’s easy to jump back using the old-fashioned swing method. Small knots, branches, hard crust are not terrible: a black plastic body kit protects the thresholds and bumpers from scratches well. A dense suspension inspires confidence that the car will not bite its nose and strike an obstacle at the most inopportune moment.

The off-road arsenal of a conventional station wagon is poorer. With an automatic transmission, there can be no question of getting out of the snow captivity by swinging. It is scary to storm obstacles from acceleration. And not so much because of the smaller clearance, but because there is a risk of damaging the gearbox housing. There is no power unit protection, and the lowest point is the crankcase. But this is when compared with the "Cross", and against the background of foreign cars, the station wagon is high and crawls very well. Just here, on loose snow and at low speed, the button to turn off the traction control system is appropriate. You can also drive with slippage, which is inevitable on virgin lands - the electronics will not choke the engine.

NOT EXPENSIVE

At the end of January, when we conducted this test, the station wagon closest to it in terms of equipment level with a manual gearbox and the same engine cost 427,800 rubles. And for the "Cross" dealers asked for 451,000 rubles. The difference is about 23 thousand. Great offer! After all, "Cross" is big wheels made of light alloy, an off-road body kit, increased ground clearance, a modified suspension, a short main pair in the transmission and a more pleasant interior. Promised the imminent appearance of "Cross" with a 16-valve engine, more powerful - another 10 thousand more expensive. It's tempting too.

Against this background, the price of the test "Kalina" station wagon seems inadequate - 523,800 rubles. But after all "automatic"! And the "Lux" equipment - with a stabilization system. Go through the price lists: foreign cars of this class with an automatic transmission, climate control and other benefits are much more expensive.

And now - off the economy! Three days behind the wheel of the new Kalina - and even the author at the age of "strongly over forty" prefers the youth model. I mean, Cross. Increased cross-country ability, non-standard appearance, sensible suspension. Drive, finally!

It’s just that the “Kalina” station wagon seemed to be some kind of pensioner, despite the 16‑valve engine. And something tells: buyers will look for peace of mind, cosiness and comfort in cars of other automakers.

Kalina Cross received an improved suspension. A shock absorber strut with a new design of the valve group, springs with increased rigidity, and a stabilizer with an increased diameter are installed in front. Behind - a compression buffer of a modified length up to 120 mm instead of 70 mm, a spring with increased rigidity, a shock absorber with a new design of the valve group, a stabilizer with an increased diameter up to 17 mm instead of 15 mm. In addition, the length of the front suspension strut and rear shock absorber has been increased by 16 mm. As a result, changes in the suspension helped to increase the ground clearance by a decent 23 mm (16 mm due to changes in the suspension and 7 mm due to the new rubber with a larger profile). Ground clearance at full load - 183 mm, unladen - 207 mm. Due to the large wheels, however, it was necessary to limit the travel of the steering rack so that the tires did not touch the fender liner during cornering. This resulted in a slight increase in the turning radius.

As already noted, the vehicle's electronic systems include an anti-lock braking system (ABS) and an emergency brake booster (BAS auxiliary braking system). In addition, Lada Kalina Cross offers a driver's airbag, an additional brake light, ISOFIX mounts. All this equipment raises the station wagon's safety to a qualitatively different level than that offered by previous VAZ models.

The lack of all-wheel drive is perhaps the only annoying moment that overshadows the generally rosy impression of a good car. It is the all-wheel drive modification of Kalina Cross that could be a long-awaited gift for domestic consumers. One can only hope that such a serious omission for a country with a predominantly northern climate will someday be corrected. In the meantime, the manufacturer offers only a front-wheel drive modification.
