Lada Kalina: clear vision. Why is the dipped headlight lamp on Kalina not on?

When buying a fairly budget car, we by default agree that it needs to be finalized and understaffed. Pretty good Hyundai Solaris optics got not the best regular low / high beam lamps. By itself, the halogen lamp, in principle, shines well, but stock factory lamps often frustrate Solaris owners, especially during long night out-of-town trips.

How to change the low / high beam bulb on Solaris

We evaluate the scope of work.

Practice shows that the low beam thread burns out more often than the high beam.

This is due to the fact that the dipped beam is used much more intensively. To save on lamps, you can install a set of LED daytime running lights. This is by the way, and changing the lamp on Solaris is extremely simple, especially the right one.

It is done like this:

Removing the lamp from the left headlight is more difficult.

With the left headlight can be difficult. The fact is that a fuse box is installed immediately behind the casing of the headlight, and behind it is a battery. Therefore, space is very limited.

Fuse box bolt.

In order not to remove the fuses, you can use a surgical clamp as a manipulator, but in any case, the fuse box cover will have to be removed. Good luck to everyone and bright headlights!

What low beam lamps will we put

The resource of factory lamps on the Hyundai Solaris is also not outstanding, so already after 20-30 thousand run many people have to think about how to change the low and high beam bulb.

Not so much “how”, but “what”, because the prices for H4 lamps are very different. First, let's dot the i and figure out which lamps can be put in Hyundai Solaris optics in principle.

Lamp types

Lamp H4 low and high beam.

By default, our car has a double-filament halogen lamp with a H4 base for 12 V and a power of 60W for high beam and 55W for low beam filament.

24-volt lamps with the same base can be more powerful - 75/70 W. The cartridge for this lamp was designated P43t. The complexity of the base and cartridge is due to the fact that each of the threads must be at a certain angle with respect to the diffuser and reflector. Only then will the luminous flux be directed and effective. In order not to confuse the position of the lamp during installation, tongues are made on the lamp base, and recesses on the headlight housing that need to be aligned and snapped into place with a latch.

Diode lamps

The light of a diode and conventional halogen dipped beam lamp. Halogen on the left, diode on the right.

In general, LED lamps shine better. But they cost more.

Leaders of sells

For some of the popular lamps that fit Hyundai Solaris, we have found up-to-date prices for 2017 and short descriptions:

  1. The lamp remains the leader of sales so far Osram H4 Night Breaker Unlimited . Shines brightly and for a long time. The power is standard, 60 / 55W, the price is within 1100 rubles per pair.
  2. Philips "Vision", catalog number 12342PRC1, power is standard, the price is about 600 rubles per pair. The flask is made using Philips Quartz Glass technology, which, in theory, should minimize the evaporation of tungsten from the filament in a halogen gas environment.
  3. Philips "LongLife EcoVision" part number 12342LLECOC1. Inexpensive average quality German lamp. The company guarantees work within 100 thousand run. The price is about 500 rubles per pair.
  4. Koito H4 12V Whitebeam . Japanese expensive lamp. Reviews are the most positive, but the price is quite high. For a pair they ask from 2100 to 2500 rubles, depending on the series.

User Survey

There are more than five hundred models and series of lamps for our H4 base. Therefore, everyone can choose a pair according to their pocket and personal preferences. It remains to change the bulbs in the headlights.

Video about how xenon shines in the low beam

Replacing low and high beam bulbs with Lada Granta is an operation that every car owner should be able to carry out, since lighting elements often burn out on the way, and further movement without lighting is unacceptable.

Even the traffic rules state that the operation of a car with an inoperative dipped beam on the driver's side is prohibited.

The design of the headlights allows you to replace the lamps with the Lada Grant, but you need to know the sequence of actions.

Causes of a non-working headlight

Often, the replacement of low beam lamps with a Lada Granta sedan or liftback is performed in case of burnout of the filaments.

But we note that the headlight may not work due to a blown fuse or damage to the wiring that powers it.

Therefore, if non-working headlights are found, it is necessary to check the corresponding fusible elements in the fuse block on the Lada Grant, as well as the integrity of the wiring.

Even if the lamps are in good condition, they must be changed every 3-4 years of vehicle operation. This is due to the fact that the bulb of the element gradually becomes cloudy, due to which the intensity of the glow decreases.

Type of lamps used on Lada Grant

The Lada Grant uses halogen double-filament lamps with an H4 base. One such lamp, due to the presence of two filaments, allows the headlight to work in two lighting modes - low beam and high beam.

In this case, the characteristics must necessarily indicate the power of the glow of each thread.

For lamps intended for use on the Grant, the power of the high beam filament should be 60 watts, and the dipped beam - 55 watts.

The disadvantage of such lighting elements is the fact that if at least one thread burns out, the lamp will have to be completely replaced, although the second thread remains working. But at the same time, the dual-filament layout facilitates the replacement process.

The thread responsible for the mode of operation of the dipped beam usually burns out. This happens due to the fact that this mode is used much more often and longer than the main beam.

We provide access

The peculiarity of the work on replacing the lighting elements on the Lada Grant is that the bulbs are removed from the inside of the headlight (under the hood from the engine side), and the space at their location is limited.

To improve the convenience of work, you can remove some elements from the power unit to make it easier to get to the light sources.

So, to improve access to the left lamp (on the driver's side), you can unscrew the mount of the air filter housing and take it to the side.

As for the right headlight, on this side you can remove the engine protective cover by unscrewing the oil filler cap and pulling out the latches. In this case, after removing the engine lining, the oil filler cap must be put in place.

Note that it is not necessary to remove these elements from the engine. If there is skill and the driver has already carried out the replacement and knows the features of the work, then it is quite possible to carry out this operation without dismantling any elements from the motor.

Replacement algorithm

To change the low beam lamp for Lada Granta, in general, no tools are required. But it is desirable to have a long screwdriver on hand, (ideal), a clean cloth and alcohol (alcohol-containing liquid).

The technology for replacing lighting elements is the same for both headlights, so let's consider the algorithm of actions using the example of the left one.

The sequence of actions is as follows:

  1. We turn off the light on the car, turn off the engine and turn the ignition switch to position "0";
  2. Open the hood;
  3. Shine a flashlight under the upper cross member on the left side to find the headlight cover;
  4. In the upper part we find the latch tab, press it and remove the cover;
  5. From the terminals of the lamp we pull the chip with the wiring (it sits tightly, so you need to pull it with effort, but at the same time carefully);
  6. We take the chip to the side;
  7. We remove the protective anther, planted on the body. To do this, there are three tongues around the anther circumference that you need to pull;
  8. We remove the lamp retainer (the retainer consists of two brackets that must be removed from the lugs of the mounting plate);
  9. We take the conclusions of the lamp and remove it;
  10. In place of the old element, we install a new light bulb and fix it;
  11. It remains to put the boot in place, put on the chip with wires and close the headlight with a lid.

We carry out a similar operation with another headlight. You can take a closer look at how the dipped beam lamp is replaced with a Lada Grant in the video presented.

Lamps installed in the headlight

The Lada Granta uses combined type headlights, which include:

  • DRL / side lights bulb (base type R, power 21W - main thread, 5W - additional);
  • High / low beam lamp (base type - H4, high beam filament power - 60 W, low beam - 55 W);
  • Turn signal (base - P, orange bulb, power - 21 W).

All of these lamps in the headlight of the Lada Grant are changed individually.

What can be put?

Standard for this car are halogen lamps. But it is quite possible to install other types of lighting elements. The following types of lamps can be placed on the Grant:

But still, it’s better not to experiment with light, but to use the lamps on Grant, which are indicated in those. documentation for cars, namely halogen.

With their quite good performance, such lighting devices are the most inexpensive, besides, their choice is large, which allows you to choose the best option for use.

What does the market offer?

Below are some options for halogen lamps of different price categories that can be installed on the Grant:

  • PHILIPS H4 COLORVISION . Set of a German manufacturer, characterized by bright light and the ability to choose the color of the glow (blue, green, yellow). The price is about $35.
  • OSRAM COLOR BLUE HYPER. German-made halogen lighting elements, with a declared color temperature of 5000K. The flask is painted blue. The price is about $17.
  • MTF LIGHT STANDARD . Korean bulbs with a transparent bulb, the color temperature of which is 2900K, which allows them to be used in headlights with plastic housings. They cost only $6.
  • KOITO DENSO VWHITE . Products made in Japan, with transparent flasks and a color temperature of 3700K. Differ in high intensity of light. Price - about $ 28;
  • EVO VISTAS. Halogen lamps from China, having a completely transparent body, their color temperature is 3200K. Will cost $25.

And these are just a few types of halogen lamps. In general, the range of such lighting equipment is very extensive and allows any car owner to find a suitable option both in terms of price and quality of work.

The nuances of the work, possible problems

Finally, about some of the nuances of the replacement. In general, the operation is simple, but sometimes there are problems.

When installing halogen lamps, it should be noted that it is not allowed to touch the bulb with your hands. During assembly/disassembly, hold the element only by the base.

If you touch the flask, then fingerprints will remain on its surface, which will lead to the appearance of darkening on the glass and the rapid failure of the element.

Therefore, during the replacement process, you should work with clean gloves. If you accidentally touched the flask with your fingers, the remaining traces of touch should be removed. And for this, clean rags and alcohol will come in handy.

Work should be carried out at positive temperatures. Some motorists who carried out the replacement in the cold simply broke the cover latch. This is due to the fact that plastic hardens in the cold, becomes brittle and breaks easily.

Another problem that Lada Grant car owners face when replacing is the rubber boot sticking to the headlight housing.

The headlight of a modern car is a complex electronic device containing many different elements. The main elements are lamps, that is, light sources. Of all the lamps installed in the headlight module, those that provide dipped beam are more likely to burn out. For halogen lights, MTBF is 500-750 hours. Halogens are used as low beam lamps. Consider how to replace halogen lamps equipped with an H7 base: for low beam sources, this size is the main one.

Why might the headlights not turn on?

Consider the reasons why the dipped beam may not burn. The current in the lamp power circuit switches the relay. There is also a fuse in this circuit. Be aware that in most cars, separate fuses are used for the right and left headlights. To find out the details, do not look for a wiring diagram. You only need a diagram of the mounting block located near the dashboard.

  1. The relay contacts could be oxidized. When you try to turn on the relay, it will click properly, but sometimes this is not enough. Only power terminals that need to be cleaned can oxidize;
  2. If the fuse in the power circuit is blown, try replacing it. However, fuses do not burn out just like that, and you need to look for the cause. Perhaps it was the ingress of liquid on the lamp base;
  3. Having removed the fuse, on each of the contacts of the connector it is necessary to measure the voltage. If it is equal to 0 Volts, and the dipped beam was turned on at the same time, it will be useless to change the lamp. It is better to immediately contact an auto electrician;
  4. Let's say the relay contacts are cleared, and there is 12 volts in the connector at the moment of switching on and the fuse is good. Then the reason why the light does not turn on will be the burnout of the lamp. This is true 99% of the time.

Step-by-step instruction

The headlight device in a modern car is often unique. However, lamps equipped with an h7 base are always connected in the same way. A metal base is pressed against the plane of the headlight by a bracket made of wire. All elements, such as the bracket and the connector for the base, differ little in different cars. So you can follow the instructions with the confidence that you will not make the mistakes that are typical for novice car owners.

What is better to buy

Let's say you need to choose something reliable and not too expensive. Then the products of European brands are suitable: OSRAM, Philips, BOSCH. Philips lamps are highly durable, although they are less bright than OSRAM halogen lamps. The products of BOSCH and OSRAM differ little, but BOSCH does not produce sources with a high color temperature. Some people like it when the light is a little yellow, and then BOSCH lamps will be the best choice.

Domestic brands have one advantage - a low price. The lamps of the Mayak and Dialuch companies are produced in a wide range, but they do not have outstanding characteristics.

Set of dipped-beam lamps from Mayak

There are also premium brands. They belong to firms from Japan, which have maintained their leadership for many years. The prices for such products are the highest. The choice is left to the owner.

The same voltage is supplied to the low beam lamps as to all the others (12 volts). And their power is usually 55 watts. On the package you can see the following designation: "12V / 55W". The manufacturer installs exactly 55-watt lamps, but many car owners carry out “tuning”, increasing power. It is not recommended to do so.

How to make a replacement

Always disconnect the battery before changing bulbs. It is enough to remove the negative terminal, but even for such a simple action, sometimes you need a ring wrench. If the network is de-energized, you can start dismantling. The base of the lamp will be covered with an overlay, and no special tool is needed to remove it.

Each of the lamps is usually protected by an overlay

There is always a plinth under the overlay. The first step is to disconnect the terminal block attached to the lamp contacts. The terminal block is simply pulled back. No pliers or screwdriver are used in this step.

Pad can be removed by hand

The bulb base will be pressed against the headlight with a wire clamp. You need to press on the bracket and then disengage it.

The wire clip is bent and disengaged

In the last step, the lamp is not held by anything. You can pull it out and then install a new one in its place.

The old lamp has been completely dismantled.

When installing, perform all steps in reverse order. The glass needs to be cleaned, for which the “Second” tool is suitable. Do not touch a clean flask with your hands, so wear gloves.

To tighten the bracket, securing the base, they usually use a flat screwdriver.

Having installed the protective pad in place, they check the work done. After connecting the battery, turn on the headlights. Let's say the lamp does not turn on, and the fuse, which was good, burned out. Then you need to look for exactly where the short circuit appeared. Most likely, the positive wire was connected to the case.

Lamps are best changed in pairs, left and right at once. Even after replacement, it is recommended to carry out adjustment.

Adjust the direction of the light beam

Having driven the car away from the vertical plane by 5 meters, the dipped beam is turned on. The upper edge of the beam must be 75 mm lower than the center of the headlamp. The spot boundary has the shape of a broken line, and the break point in the diagram is marked with the letter "E". The "E" point must not be shifted to the left or right.

The instructions for the car indicate where the headlight adjustment screws are located. One of them adjusts the vertical tilt, and with the help of the second one changes the direction of the beam “right-left”. Nothing else has been invented yet.

Why lamps burn out too often

The voltage supplied to the contacts of the halogen lamp should be 13.5 volts. But in reality, everything looks more complicated. When the battery is charging, the voltage in the network is specially brought to 14.2 volts. This will shorten the life of the lamps.

Voltage, V Relative brightness, % Relative service life, %
11,48 53 1000
12,15 67 440
13,5 100 100
14,18 120 50
14,85 145 28

Take measurements of the voltage of the onboard network. Let's say at high speeds the value exceeds 14.4 Volts. This means that the generator urgently needs to be repaired. Most of the time when the engine is running, the generator produces exactly 13.5 volts. Therefore, it is not necessary to lower the voltage by including a choke or resistor in series with the lamp. This will reduce the brightness.

To measure the voltage, a multimeter is connected to the battery terminals.

Need access to both terminals of the standard battery

The engine will need to be started during the experiment.

The reason why the lamps fail can also be insufficient tightness of the headlights. If the ceiling constantly fogs up, then it is clear that the flask will not remain perfectly clean. In general, frequent burnout of lamps is a reason to contact a car dealer (here we are talking about cars that are not out of warranty).

Someone in their reviews reports that they change lamps with an H7 base every two months. There are other reviews that say that one set of lamps is enough for a year. In fact, the service life is always indicated on the packaging, and it is 500 or 750 hours. In a good way, these figures can be multiplied by 2, and if the lamp burns out earlier, you need to look for the cause. It may be a malfunction of the onboard network. Few people have heard of fake lamps, unlike spark plugs. Another thing is products made using simplified technology. Here our advice sounds like this: carefully study the packaging.

All modern lamps become cloudy over time, which in turn affects the loss of power and the strength of the luminous flux. Therefore, for a sense of confidence on the road at night, it is advisable not to wait until the bulb in the headlight burns out by itself, but to periodically replace the lamps.

When replacing headlight lamps on the Grant, they prefer either Philips X-tremeVision H4 lamps or OSRAM H4 12V 60 / 55W lamps, because they have proven themselves in the best way in terms of aperture ratio.

For more tips / instructions for repairing Grants, see here.

You don’t need tools, because you don’t need to dismantle anything, the only thing is to throw off the terminal from the battery and put on gloves.

  • We pull off the block with electrical wiring from the lamp terminals. The terminal should come off without any effort.
  • Next, you will need to remove the rubber seal (grab the tongue and pull).
  • In order to be able to remove the dipped / main beam bulb from the headlight, we squeeze the antennae of the retainer made of a spring on the sides and remove them from the reflector hooks.
  • Now you can remove the H4 bulb from the headlight of the Lada Grants and carefully (holding the iron part) install the new low beam bulb back into the headlight. On the other headlight, we perform a similar operation.
  • It is worth noting that if you have only one lamp burned out, then you need to change both, because even if you install a lamp of the same manufacturer, the lamps will differ in the brightness of the light flux.

    Video "Replacing lamps in Lada Grant"

    This video shows the process of replacing the middle dump in a Lada Grant car.

    If you suddenly forget to replace a burned-out light bulb or are too lazy (get greedy, in the end) to do it, then it may end up costing you a little more - by the amount of the minimum for malfunctioning external lighting devices. A rather unpleasant situation, given that the cost of a new light bulb is most often 15-50 rubles, and they are sold in every, perhaps even without exception, car shop. At the same time, if you have never done this before, then know that changing a headlight bulb is one of the easiest DIY activities you can think of (do it yourserf! - do it yourself!). And here are just a few simple points. Why, you won’t even need any tool for this, except for a clean glove or rag.

    So how do you change a burned out headlight bulb? First of all, you need to remember that, according to, at night or in conditions of insufficient visibility, you are forbidden to move with a faulty headlight even to the place of repair or parking. Therefore, in this case, you will have to go by a passing car or ask someone to get a new light bulb. In this case, it is better for you to immediately remove the burnt out light bulb and go to the store with it to show it to the seller. In other cases, it is also better to remove the light bulb in advance and come to the store with it so that the seller picks up a new one for you, although there is nothing complicated in determining (more precisely, even reading) the type of light bulb you need.

    First of all, open the hood of your car and find the headlight housing itself - it will be a large black housing - you are unlikely to confuse it with something else. Look at the back of this headlight assembly and find the cartridge there - a bundle of wires that fits the removable cover. On most vehicles, this socket will have three wires coming out of it, and the plug of these wires will be trapezoid shaped.

    Remove this bundle of wires by unplugging the plug at the base of the headlight assembly. Now it's time for the lid block! We also need to remove it, and here three types of installation of covers with a light bulb are possible:

    1. Plastic Clip - You will see a lever sticking out of the top of the lid. Press on it with your thumb and at the same time pull on the cover, but be careful - it can quickly slide off.
    2. Metal clip - simply pull the cover up and out of the way and it will be removed in your hands. Try not to drop it, because it can roll under the hood anywhere, and finding it in this case will not be easy.
    3. A screw cap is the most common type of fastening of a block with a light bulb - just unscrew it, resting your fingers on the special edges of this cap, turning it counterclockwise.

    Removing the cover block with clamping mechanism

    Now that you have the block cover in your hands, from the inside of it you can see a light bulb sticking out of it. In the vast majority of cases, you just need to pull it out of the groove with a little effort and holding on to the base. In some cases it may be necessary to twist the light bulb slightly in order to release it, but this is rare these days; however, if the light bulb does not come out, then try this.

    We insert a new light bulb to replace the burned out one. Remove the new lamp from the package by holding it through a clean cloth or glove. The problem is that a tiny amount of sebum or sweat can get on the surface of the bulb, which will cause the bulb to burn out faster. Insert the light bulb in place of the burnt out one into the block cover.

    Slide the block cover back into the headlight housing, making sure the o-ring is still in place and the cover is seated snugly.

    Reconnect the wiring by inserting the three-wire plug into the socket. Check headlight operation. If the new bulb also quickly burns out, then most likely it makes no sense to immediately run for a new bulb to replace it again - perhaps it's the car's wiring.

    Unfortunately, car manufacturers do not always make headlight bulb replacement as affordable as we described above - the options can be very different - from the inconvenience of operating with the bulb cover due to interfering hoses, to removing the entire headlight for such a replacement.

    Also note that if you went to the store for a new light bulb, having removed the burned out one, then also be sure to assemble the headlight unit back in the same sequence and connect the wires - even if the trip is very short. Firstly, it is impossible for dirt and even dust to get inside the headlight, and this will happen if you do not tighten the block cover; secondly, no one canceled the daytime running lights (unless, of course, it was from the DRL that the bulb burned out) and, in addition, the removed bundle of wires, dangling in a disconnected position, can easily be closed by touching the metal elements of the engine compartment.
