If the oil level in the automatic transmission drops, and traces of a leak cannot be found, then there may be several reasons.

One of them is a malfunction of the vacuum corrector used in automatic transmissions of Mercedes, Ford, General Motors, Nissan, etc.

The automatic transmission vacuum corrector is connected by a pipe to the engine intake manifold. Inside it is a membrane that reacts to the degree of vacuum in the collector.

When the membrane breaks, the oil from the internal cavity of the automatic transmission is sucked into the engine intake manifold. At the same time, the opacity of the exhaust increases, the smoke acquires a bluish tint. The intensity of smoke depends on the degree of destruction of the membrane.

In some cases, this defect is accompanied by an increase in the oil level in the engine.

To clarify the diagnosis, at the first suspicion of a malfunction of the vacuum corrector, it is necessary to disconnect the pipe from it and check with a clean match if there is any oil left in it. For a working vacuum corrector, the nozzle must be dry. If an oil film is found in the nozzle, the vacuum corrector will have to be replaced.

This malfunction is very insidious, since its external manifestations are not too noticeable, and the consequences can be catastrophic: an automatic transmission, forced to work for a long time with a reduced amount of oil, will fail, and literally not a single "living" part will remain in it.

Another reason for the slow drop in the oil level in the automatic transmission in the absence of traces of external leaks may be oil seepage into the engine cooling system.

During the operation of an automatic transmission, the oil temperature can rise to 150 C. To ensure its performance, it must be cooled, which in most cases is achieved by integrating an automatic transmission oil system radiator into the engine cooling system filled with antifreeze. If the oil cooler leaks, oil from it begins to enter the engine radiator. This happens because when the engine is running, the pressure in the automatic transmission radiator is higher than the pressure of the engine cooling system.

When the engine is turned off, the picture changes: antifreeze begins to penetrate into the transmission oil.

At the initial stage, an oil film can be found on the surface of the antifreeze under the radiator cap.

Further development of this process leads to the appearance of an emulsion both in the engine and in the automatic transmission. Once inside the automatic transmission, antifreeze corrodes the adhesive base of the friction elements, which causes the friction layer to peel off and corrosion of the internal elements, and also worsens the lubricating properties of the oil.

If this process has begun recently, then replacing the oil cooler and flushing the box two or three times by changing the oil can sometimes revive the automatic transmission to life.

Flushing the automatic transmission can only be done with gear oil. The use of other liquids for this purpose is unacceptable.

The conclusion is simple: often unscrew the radiator cap of the engine cooling system and check the antifreeze for traces of oil.

Another common malfunction is a break in the tube connecting the automatic transmission to the oil cooler.

In this case, in 1-2 minutes, all the oil is drained from the box, and it ceases to function. If at the same time the driver immediately stopped and turned off the engine, then after replacing the tube and adding oil to the required level, the automatic transmission will restore its performance in 90% of cases.

A number of automatic transmission malfunctions are associated with improper adjustment of the power control cable (thrust), destruction of its braid or breakage of the cable itself. As a result, there is a lack of automatic switching, their delay or premature operation. To fix this problem, you should contact the auto repair shop.

When operating automatic transmissions with electronic control from the on-board processor, it happens that some kind of warning signal is displayed on the dashboard while driving.
