Is the Daewoo Matiz expensive to maintain. Goodbye Matiz: why the cheapest car left the Russian market

21.08.2023

Given the low price, practicality and low fuel consumption, Daewoo Matiz is a popular car on the roads of Russia and Ukraine. It is ideal for the city because of its compactness. Five people fit freely in the car, and if necessary, you can transport bulky cargo if you first fold the rear seats. Yes, the trunk of the car is very small, however, the model is also positioned as an economical city car.

Many buyers who have just laid eyes on this car want to know what fuel consumption the Daewoo Matiz has, because the engine of the car has a volume of only 0.8 liters. Note that the reviews of the owners on the issue of gasoline consumption are very contradictory, so let's try to figure this out on our own.

Fuel consumption per 100 km Daewoo Matiz

In theory, a car with a 0.8 liter engine should consume 6 liters of gasoline per 100 km in urban conditions. On the highway, consumption can drop to 4.5-5 liters. Many owners on car forums complain that their car "eats" about 9-10 liters per hundred. It is indeed possible, and there is nothing strange about it. With a certain style of driving, gasoline consumption can be reduced to a normal 6 liters. But first of all, we need to calculate what kind of fuel consumption the Daewoo Matiz has per 100 km of track.

Flow check

First you need to spend almost all the fuel that is in the tank. To do this, you need to drive a car until the "Gas Station" light comes on. After we go to the nearest gas station and refuel to the maximum. The check must be kept, as it will indicate how many liters were poured into the tank. Most likely, the check will indicate the purchase of 30 liters of gasoline, since the tank in the Daewoo Matiz has a volume of 35 liters. The "Gas station" light comes on when there are about 5 liters of fuel left in the tank. Immediately after that, we reset the daily mileage counter and ride about our business.

When the "Gas station" light comes on again, we need to record the distance travelled. So we find out how many kilometers 30 liters of fuel last. Further, in the course of simple calculations, one can determine the fuel consumption of the Daewoo Matiz per 100 km. We need the number on the counter multiplied by the number of liters of fuel filled and divided by 100. Let's say the counter is 400. Given that we previously filled 30 liters of gasoline, the formula will look like this:

400 x 30 / 100 = 7.5

This means that per 100 kilometers the fuel consumption of a Daewoo Matiz with a 0.8-liter engine is 7.5 liters. It is worth noting that such a result is quite acceptable, but this car is capable of great savings. The reason for the increased consumption in the first place lies in the style of driving.

Changing driving style

If, after calculating the consumption, it turned out that the car consumes more than 8 liters per hundred, then first of all it is worth changing the driving style. Someone says that the engine needs to be warmed up, and this will help reduce consumption, but in fact this is not so.

The main reason for high consumption is incorrect acceleration. It should be borne in mind that with a 0.8 liter engine, the car simply cannot accelerate quickly, so it picks up speed very slowly. Drivers don't like it, they press the pedal to the floor to make the car pick up speed faster. At the same time, the car accelerates slightly, but much. And so every time the car stops at a traffic light or in front of a pedestrian crossing. The main thing is to pick up speed gradually, as the engine speed increases. Do not press the pedal to the floor, and it is desirable to change gears at a crankshaft rotation speed of 2000-2500 rpm.

If you follow this advice, then the fuel consumption of Daewoo Matiz can be reduced by 30-35%. And it is also worth remembering that economical driving is possible on this car at a speed of 70-80 kilometers per hour. When driving at higher speeds, fuel consumption increases significantly.

Faults

Rarely, the cause of increased gasoline consumption is a malfunction in the fuel system or engine. There are many reasons why a car can "eat" gasoline:

  1. Poor quality fuel.
  2. Bad engine oil.
  3. Low air pressure in tires.
  4. Faulty speed sensor or crankshaft distribution sensor.
  5. Clogged nozzles, etc.

Also, the use of air conditioning affects the consumption of gasoline. On average, the operation of the air conditioner increases gasoline consumption by 2 liters per 100 km. Therefore, you should not be surprised at the increased consumption if you drive with the air conditioner constantly on.

Replacing Consumables

Some owners in the reviews on the forums write that it was possible to reduce the fuel consumption of Daewoo Matiz by replacing consumables: oil, gasoline and air filters. The latter also play an important role in the consumption of gasoline: for example, if the air filter is clogged, then a lean air-fuel mixture may enter the combustion chamber. As a result, more fuel will be needed to keep the engine running smoothly.

Poor quality oil can increase the force of friction between parts, which will also lead to increased gas mileage.

Conclusion

Note that with a 0.8 engine, the fuel consumption of the Daewoo Matiz (mechanical or automatic - it doesn’t matter) is 6-6.5 liters in the city, 5 liters on the highway. This is an extremely economical car, and owners' indignation at high consumption is understandable. After all, a car with such a weak engine should not consume so much fuel.

If none of the above tips helped to reduce consumption, then you need to contact the service station, where the craftsmen almost certainly encountered similar problems.

Sales of the most budget car are stopped in the country

The management of Ravon, which replaced the developer Uz-Daewoo, has decided to withdraw the Matiz subcompact hatchback from the Russian market. As Realnoe Vremya managed to find out, the reason for making such a decision was that the car was morally and functionally obsolete. According to experts, the automotive market will not suffer due to the departure of Matiz, since there are alternatives to this car in Russia, but the question of how much their characteristics and price will suit buyers remains open.

Failed modernization and final exit from the market

Since October 2, the favorite of Russian women and novice drivers has become unavailable for ordering on the official website of Ravon in the Russian Federation, as the company decided to withdraw the Matiz subcompact hatchback from the market. The last copies remained only in dealerships.

At one time, this Uzbek-Korean baby won the hearts of many Russians, after the country stopped producing the “people's” Oka minicar in 2008. Now manufacturers and dealers are talking about obsolescence and Matiz. Samo p Ravon's management did not explain to consumers, keeping silent about the reasons for the departure of the car, however, as Realnoe Vremya was told in the Delfo car holding (which is a Ravon dealer), it's all because "the car is morally and functionally obsolete."

We had information about the departure of Matizher, since the car was withdrawn from the line with a replacement for the R2 model, - Anna Matushevskaya, Delfo Marketing Director, comments.

Previously, Ravon planned to update the hatchback, providing it with a number of new systems, but in the end the company abandoned its plans. The fact is that modernization could not affect the cost of Matiz in the most pleasant way, because of which the model could not compete in the market.

Brand new "Matiz" lose used

The main feature of the car leaving the Russian market was an attractive price - it could be purchased for only 314 thousand rubles. Matiz was equipped with a 0.8-liter V3 engine, which had a total power of 51 horsepower. As a transmission, buyers were offered a five-speed manual gearbox. Of the options, Matiz could only boast of audio preparation - even the windows in the basic version were mechanical.

Representatives of the Kazan company "Your AutoExpert" report that this car was very popular among the citizens

According to experts, the car was very popular among the townspeople, however, with one caveat - we are talking about the secondary market. Photo krabjiem.lv

Now a large number of these cars are represented on the secondary market, and therefore the departure of Matiz from car dealerships is not yet so critical for our consumer. The fact is that basically they try to take such cars second-hand, because their cost is about half the price in a car dealership, - comments mValeria Arzhevitina, Client Relations and Advertising Manager at Your AutoExpert. - In the secondary market, such "Matiz" worth 100 - 150 thousand rubles are very actively sold and bought, and will continue to be sold and bought.

According to the expert, "salon" "Matiz" can hardly be called popular, primarily because people who have an amount of about 300 - 400 thousand rubles, mainly turn their attention not to brand new "Matiz", but to used foreign cars with the best set of options. Valeria Arzhevitina also notes thatthe concern itself is not popular among Russians, as the company is poorly engaged in advertising and does not make interesting offers for the consumer.

Is there an alternative?

a copy of the previous generation Chevrolet Spark hatchback.

R2 already entered the Russian market in January, at the same time it became known about the departure of Matiz, - explained Anna Matushevskaya, marketing director of Delfo.

According to our interlocutor, R2, like Matiz, is distinguished by its low price - it is positioned as the most affordable car with an automatic transmission on the Russian market. True, the price is higher than that of Matiz - 409 thousand rubles.

The replacement for the outgoing Matiz, as noted above, can be R2 - a copy of the previous generation Chevrolet Spark hatchback. Photo carstarnews.com

The representative of the company "Your AutoExpert" calls, in fact, the Chevrolet Spark as an alternative - this is a very compact, small car, which is in many ways similar to the "Matiz" in terms of overall and technical parameters. There is also a Chinese "Lifan Smiley", but this model could not prove itself in terms of reliability.

So far, I can’t name another alternative, because other compact cars in this class are already an order of magnitude more expensive. There is a Kia Pikanta, for example, but this car is almost twice as expensive, and this is the minimum price gap, - our interlocutor comments. -If we consider new cars, then in this price segment, the Russian consumer pays attention to the domestic auto industry. This is Kalina and Grant.

Lina Sarimova

Judging by the comments to the announcements of our summer trip, the most questions were not the length of the route or the places we will visit, but the choice of vehicle. This can be understood: domestic passenger cars are famous for their lack of reliability and comfort, and indeed, why not on a motorcycle? ..
Nevertheless, we chose the "cart" for a long time and meticulously (even made up signs with pluses and minuses), and we stopped at Vazzik quite consciously.

Under the cut, I will answer a few questions "why not ..." and tell you what kind of car we ended up with.
You are motorcyclists, why not on a motorcycle? Especially since you already have it.

At first glance, the choice is obvious: we love motorcycle tourism, and Africa Twin is the best fit for our purposes - a reliable, simple and economical device. However, upon closer examination, it was not so simple. In the case of a motor, two options are possible:
- Two on one. Going away for three months is not the same as going on vacation for two weeks. Need more stuff, more parts, more tools. Water, fuel, etc. This means that we will most likely get an overload, or just a shell hung with a bunch of junk weighing under 400 kg with riders. And everything would be fine, but in Asian countries there are a lot of sandy roads, on which moving in this state (and even with a passenger) will not only be uncomfortable, but simply dangerous. I must admit that I am not very experienced in terms of off-road, so this would be more than a serious test for me. Further more. Because we don’t have any support, then any injury or simply a deterioration in the pilot’s health is a big risk, because Tatyana will not be able to fly Africa because of her short stature.
Each on his own motorcycle. In this case, loading problems are solved, but many others remain. Buying a suitable device for a girl of this height is already a whole story, and the specific requirements of the route (you need, if not enduro, then at least an SUV) make the task doubly difficult. Also, in any case, the device should not be very old, so the issue of the budget plays an important role (and Africa, by the way, although in excellent condition, is made in 1994, which is also quite a lot). We take into account the experience of off-road driving - Tatyana has even less of it, and even that one is on the low Viraga. Let's add other general disadvantages of motorcycling. For example, a motik is more noticeable, attracts the attention of both traffic cops and locals, who are not always friendly, as you know. All the junk on the mote is practically not protected from thieves and just curious ones - it is better not to leave equipped vehicles unattended for a long time. In general, it turned out that in addition to the pleasure of riding on two wheels and some kind of brutality and “fluidity”, motorcycling in our situation does not benefit in any way, but vice versa. Therefore, by force of will, refuse.
Need an SUV! The same Frontier that is already there will do just fine!

Indeed, this candidate looks promising: frame, four-wheel drive, good capacity and load capacity, unpretentious engine, air conditioning. In the end, Nissan was bought with the expectation of more or less long-distance travel. But there are also a lot of downsides here. The first is fuel consumption. This figure when driving on the highway below 11 l / 100 km I have never dropped. For petrol 3.3 with an "automatic" it's not so bad, but not on this trip, because we will be unemployed, deprived of any material support. A passenger car on the highway eats one and a half to two times less - profit! Further. The pickup has a very difficult maintainability. What is the replacement of candles alone with the removal of the intake manifold (or the hood, as you are lucky) worth. Automatic transmission ... With all its advantages, it still does not inspire confidence in me. And every time the brain slips a picture with a suddenly ended "automatic" at the father's car, and the story repeated itself twice: first on the 96 RVR, then on the 2000 Tribute. I don’t know what to do in the steppe of Mongolia with a non-driving automatic transmission, but that’s why it’s dumb. Of course, if the pickup was new, there would be no questions, but here we have what we have. And if the car is not young, then it is better to have spare parts with you and / or along the route. It will be difficult to find some original stray for an American pickup truck of Japanese origin in the outback, and again, the budget does not allow buying a full body of spare parts in reserve. Therefore, I still had to part with the pickup truck and turn my eyes to more mundane, “folk” cars.
And yet, without all-wheel drive and ground clearance is bad. Niva! Cheap and cheerful!
There should be a photo with a red Niva, which I once had, but did not find it in electronic form.
Frankly, Niva seemed to be a very good option, she even made it to the final on a par with Vazik. I know very well what kind of car this is, because my journey into the world of jeeping and autotourism began with it (and therefore, by the way, I have special feelings for it). The advantages and disadvantages of the Niva are well known to everyone. The assets include low cost, excellent cross-country ability by the standards of the class, sufficient capacity and carrying capacity for two people, an abundance of spare parts in any roadside store and all sorts of different services. However, this car as a result turned out to be rejected by us due to outweighed shortcomings. For example, fuel consumption on the Niva, although lower than on the Frontier, is still comparable - in the region of 10 l / 100 km. In the permanent all-wheel drive system, there are a lot of weak points with a low resource (an abundance of constantly rotating bearings, shafts and oil seals in the transmission). Finally, comfort tends to zero - hard, loud, uncomfortable. I remember when I moved from the Niva in 21099, I was amazed at the difference, although the latter is also not ideal. The final argument was that only Niva with a range of 70-80 thousand km fit into the designated budget, and for this car this already matters.
In general, in the end we decided that since we had a light tourist trip (hehe) and little money, then there was no point in chasing four-wheel drive. Passenger cars are driven in any country, including on such roads that not every expensive SUV will risk it, and in this case we don’t need more. But the simplicity of design and efficiency will clearly be at hand.
It was decided - a hatchback or station wagon, as fresh as possible and without alterations, front-wheel drive with a "non-street racing" clearance, one owner and a mileage of up to 50 thousand are highly desirable. The choice is huge, but within the available amount, it was almost not necessary to choose. Only domestic VAZs, Uzbek Daewoo Matiz and occasionally suspicious Nexia climbed through (already somewhere, and there will definitely be no problems with spare parts on Daewoo in Uzbekistan!), Ukrainian ZAZ Chance / Sens and some unknown Chinese. The two extreme options were dismissed due to the fact that "it is not clear what it is and what they eat with." Matiz is a very charismatic car, it would fit perfectly under our concept, plus it could have been almost new in general. But an engine of 700 cubic meters (this is not always enough in Africa) and microscopic wheels on thin levers made us doubt its “long-term playability” in long off-road conditions with a lot of luggage.
And so there was one option left - the most reliable representative of the VAZ, 2113/2114. Simple, maintainable, with a minimum of unnecessary parts (like power steering or air conditioning), economical and inconspicuous car.
After reviewing a number of copies, we eventually acquired an almost completely standard 14th 2010 with a mileage of only 20,000 km. I have never had such a “fresh” car in my life. :)

I think it makes no sense to talk about the design features - almost everyone is familiar with the “nine”.
Inside, everything is also quite standard - a simple trip computer (which is supposed to be replaced with one that can read engine error codes), a radio tape recorder, wiped covers on the seats. Manual, hurrah!

Engine 1.6, eight-valve, injection.

The trunk, of course, seems small and uncomfortable - a box with a tool, a fire extinguisher, a bottle with a "washer" and a bag with a compressor took up almost a quarter of the volume. For the duration of the trip, Wazzik will be converted into a two-seater to fit all the junk. Removed the headrests immediately - with them nothing is visible at all in the rear window.

Finally, a little about breakdowns (that's right, where without them?) The first, by the way, happened two minutes after the purchase. For the first time behind the wheel, I tried to adjust the rear-view mirrors. Here is the result.

However, this is not the only "defect", and not the worst. From what I've found so far:
- the heated rear window does not work;
- the "pisalka" of the rear window does not work;
- the heating of the driver's seat does not work (yes, yes, it is there!);
- the cigarette lighter does not work (I suspect that its power is supplied to the radio, because it has obvious traces of a "quick" installation);
- in the cold, the wipers sometimes refused to work, with the onset of heat they repaired themselves;
- the most serious: idle, sometimes extraneous sounds during operation (detonation knocks, it looks like a failure of the injection moment), the “check engine” is cyclically floating on a cold one.
In the near future, we will have to deal with all this, change the oil in the engine and gearbox, diagnose the main components and start purchasing spare parts for the road.
That's it.

Owner reviews

Overall impressions of the car are very positive, I got what I wanted. The machine is small, maneuverable, gasoline consumption 6-6.5 liters in the city. On the highway, I don’t know for sure yet (I went again to Biysk and back - it turned out somewhere around 5.8 with air conditioning).

Then it remains only to ride and enjoy. Although the first month I had a real culture shock - “how can a car not need to be repaired ??? It's been a month already!!!" After the Oka, which did not live without repairs for more than two weeks, I just went nuts.

In terms of roominess — a very decent car, which is larger inside than outside. Now there are two large bags in the trunk, and a few more bags are stuffed in the corners. The back seat can accommodate 2-3 medium-sized passengers quite comfortably. Ahead of me one place is enough. If there is a front passenger, you beat with your elbow when shifting gears.

By passability. Compared to the Oka, there are low bumpers, which constantly let me down, but the manufacturer does not position this car as an SUV.

Convenience — not very comfortable seats became a revelation for me. That is, they are comfortable ... but for some reason the back falls off on long trips.

Video review

Regarding technical malfunctions during operation:

1. 15,000 km - replacement of the front strut assembly, front wheel bearings, lever assembly. Consumables worth about 15 thousand rubles. During the repair, the most interesting thing turned out: the familiar master of the service station is a qualified specialist who worked at this plant in Uzbekistan. He was very surprised by the racks that needed to be repaired - they were completely different, which distinguished the assembly machines exported to Russia! The suspension of the original Matiz is considered not to be killed! Plus, the body is not galvanized - for the domestic market of Uzbekistan, the body of the cars is galvanized!

2. Changed the speedometer — the daily run speedometer did not work! Ordered through the store for 1200 rubles!

3. 30,000 km - low beam bulbs (120 rubles).

4. At 24,000 km, a problem arose - the rear brake pads frozen in the winter! I don't use the parking brake though. Sometimes I had to pour boiling water!

That's all! Especially, as you can see, there are no problems in operation!

Review of Daewoo Matiz 0.8 manual transmission 2010

Winter. Matiz lives in an open parking lot. In winter, it was covered with frost every night. We jump into the car, start it, take the scrapers and go outside to scrape. After 10-15 minutes the glass and mirrors are clean. Somewhere in the same time, the thermometer needle will rise to the first third of the scale. You can get in the car and turn on the stove. Warm air comes out immediately. The entire structure of the machine warms up in about half an hour of movement.

Matiz starts up perfectly if the engine is cold. If it is hot, it may not start the first time (scrolling for 3 seconds), it was started from the second. But frost -30 and below for Matiz, of course, extreme. Everything freezes - tires, suspension, steering. It's cold in the car. The stove blows, tries, but there is icy iron and plastic around.

Spring has come, the roads are muddy. This complete set of Matiz is not equipped with rear wipers. The rear glass does not get dirty quickly, but it still gets dirty. Therefore, the driver works as a janitor.

The hot summer has come. Here I already had to regret the absence - oh well, not an air conditioner, at least electric windows. From the driver's seat, without unfastening the belt, you can lower / raise all the windows, but this is only while standing at a traffic light. On the move, you can safely lower only the driver's window.

Matiz in the city. Well, what can I say - convenient and comfortable. You can easily fit in the right lane between the missing storm sewer grate on the right and a hefty concrete truck on the left. About the fact that you can ride between the rows - fairy tales, I don’t always squeeze between cars on a bicycle.

Matiz outside the city. Somehow it turns out that most of the mileage the machine rolls outside the city. On a good autobahn-type road, it goes perfectly and handles well up to maximum speed - for my Matiz, this is 130 on the speedometer. It doesn't take off anywhere. When driving with the windows open, gusts of wind are felt. The rutting of the asphalt is felt.

Matiz capacity. The owner is in the tourism business, so a typical car load is four adult tourists and four small "one-day" backpacks. Passengers are comfortable, they can eat and drink on the go, cheaper than on a bus, and faster than on an electric train. If you go for several days, with serious backpacks, then without a roof rack, only the two of you.

Ilya, review about Daewoo Matiz 0.8 (51 hp) MT 2011

We bought Matiz in October 2011. The sellers in the salons colorfully describe the merits of the Matiz, but I want to talk about the shortcomings, which no one in the salon will say:

1. Gasoline consumption under ideal conditions is 7 liters, and if there are traffic jams and air conditioning, then all 9 liters.

2. For no apparent reason, the power windows suddenly failed. The mechanics in the cabin did not find the cause, and the power windows worked by themselves.

3. For all cars, air conditioner condensate flows onto the asphalt, and for Matiz, it is exactly under the feet of the front passenger.

4. About the brakes - they are not installed on the Matiz, in my opinion, so if the speed is 60 km / h, then emergency braking is useless.

5. The suspension and shock absorbers were killed on the factory conveyor, so on the road it seems that the Matiz is falling apart from any pebble or crack on the pavement.

6. Apparently, the body at the factory is already assembled from rusty elements, since rust breaks through the paint after a year of operation. They don't even try to paint rust under the battery and headlights at the factory. In a word, this car is worthy only obscene compliments. In general, a rotten toilet bowl ...

Natalya Alekseevna, review of Matiz 1.0 (63 hp) on the mechanics of 2011

With a cursory examination of the interior, it seems that you won’t fit in at all, but my fears were not justified - there is enough space inside for my average height, and 2 people fit normally in the back. There is no question of the capacity of the trunk here at all, I brought a package from the store and it’s good, nothing more is required.

As for the plastic, it is absolutely oak, the lining is cheap, the seals on two doors were jammed. It is clear that I did not expect special quality from Matiz - an economy class car.

In humid weather, the windows fog up a lot, so driving without air conditioning is problematic. And he, by the way, eats up the power of an already weak motor. Therefore, in dry weather, I do not drive the air conditioner once again. This is spring-summer. And in winter, in severe frosts, the rear windows freeze over.

The front windows do not fog up and do not freeze if you use a fan. But the stove does not cope with its task even at -20, so the icy plastic and iron are warmed up in about an hour. In general, driving a Matiz in the cold is another adventure. After all, literally everything freezes in the machine: from tires to suspension.

So, the motor (it’s difficult to call this “miracle” a motor) is, in principle, enough for the urban regime. You do not lag behind in the stream, the gears “click” easily and naturally. In general, I note that although the dynamics are lame for everything that is possible, it is very fun and provocatively to drive this machine. You sit for yourself, turn the “dryer” (the steering wheel does not reach the “steering wheel”), poke the “stick” and your “crazy stool” is not at all such a vegetable as it might seem!

The fun begins on the track, because after the 90 km / h mark, the traction disappears, and overtaking is difficult even at 4th speed. Because of this, you have to calculate each step so that it does not turn out to be the last. There is a 5th speed, but it is cruising. And in general, when the speed is over 110 km / h, driving is no longer comfortable.

Since the noise level begins to literally go off scale, and the little car itself does not behave quite adequately. In other words, it's scary to drive. Consumption on the highway is about 5-6 liters. In the city - 7-9 liters per "hundred". I consider these to be quite worthy indicators.

Vasily drives a Daewoo Matiz 0.8 (51 hp) with a 2014 manual.
