  • when the ignition is turned on, the voltage on both terminals should show at least 12 volts: if less, then the battery is discharged, if there is no voltage, an open circuit.

How can I clean the sensor

Often, the work of the IAC can improve just as a result of cleaning it. For this procedure, you will need WD-40 or a carburetor cleaner. The composition must be applied to a regular hygienic stick with a cotton swab at the end. After disconnecting the wiring harness from the sensor, try to carefully wipe all the contacts of the pad and harness with a stick. To be sure that the assembly is clean, you will have to remove the regulator from the seat and clean the needle liberally with a jet of WD-40 or carburetor cleaner. After that, do not forget to dry the sensor. Then everything is installed in place and checked for operability.

But if you make sure that the device does not function, and cleaning does not work, You can try to fix it yourself:

The principle of operation of the idle speed sensor (pxx)

At the moment when we turn on the ignition, the stem on the idle speed controller fully extends and rests against a special calibration hole in the throttle pipe. On a warm engine, at the time of adjustment, the sensor is at around 30-50 steps. As the steps increase or decrease, the volume of air passing through the calibration hole constantly changes. Moreover, if the stem is pulled out, then the steps increase and vice versa. The stroke of the rod is 250 steps.

At the time of purchase of the idle speed sensor for a VAZ, the distance from the stem head to the flange should be no more than 23mm. Carefully measure the length of the protruding head.

The engine receives a certain amount of air necessary for the normal operation of the engine, thereby regulating idling.

The incoming air is analyzed by the mass air flow sensor () and, in accordance with its amount, supplies the required amount of gasoline to the engine through the fuel injectors. According to the crankshaft position sensor (), the controller monitors the number of engine revolutions and controls the idle speed controller. This is how the process of supplying the required volume of air occurs.

On a cold engine, the controller increases the speed due to the idle speed sensor (pxx) and increases the engine speed when warming up. This mode allows you to immediately start moving without warming up.

It is recommended to install an idle speed sensor from the omega group with the number 2112-114830. Also good IAC 2112-1148300-04 "KZTA". It is worth noting that when buying, you need to pay attention to the end mark 04. Sensors are produced with marks 01 02 03 04, so look at the mark of the old sensor and purchase the same one. If you put, for example, a sensor with label 04 instead of 01, the sensor will not work. Such a replacement is allowed: 01 to 03, 02 to 04 and vice versa.

Signs of a malfunction of the idle speed sensor (pxx)

Unfortunately, the idle speed controller is not equipped with a self-diagnosis system, so neither the on-board computer () nor the illuminated check range will tell us about this. But if you encounter the following problems, then the sensor needs to be checked (), cleaned () repaired () or replaced () in case of a malfunction.

  2. Idle speed fluctuates.
  3. When starting a cold engine, there is no increased speed.
  4. It stalls when the transmission is removed from the box.

In principle, all the symptoms of IAC death are similar to the symptoms. But the difference is that when the TPS dies, the on-board computer will show an error or the check-range will light up.

Principle of operation

It is not entirely correct to call the idle speed sensor a sensor. After all, they are measuring instruments that process and convert information, display it on mechanical or electronic indicators on the dashboard.

It is correct to call the idle speed sensor a regulator, or simply IAC. IAC plays an important role in the operation of the engine, as it ensures the smooth and correct behavior of the power unit.

Alas, the self-diagnosis systems on the VAZ 2109 are not perfect, therefore, if the idle speed controller fails, the car does not notify you of this even by turning on the Check Engine signal light. Therefore, you have to navigate by signs of breakdown.

The IAC works as follows. When the ignition switch is turned on, the rod on the sensor extends to the stop, while resting against a special hole in the throttle pipe. The IAC starts to read the steps and the valve returns to its original position. When the motor is running, increasing or decreasing the number of steps changes the volume of air entering through the opening. Therefore, the necessary amount of air enters the engine, which ensures stable operation of the engine at idle.

Functions

IAC regulates the amount of air entering the engine when the throttle is closed. This suggests that the IAC performs the functions of automatically adjusting the set engine speeds at idle.

Also, the regulator takes part in the process of warming up the engine to optimal operating temperatures in winter. The operating temperature range of the IAC is quite wide - from -40 to +130 degrees Celsius.

IAC, with such important functions, is small in size and consists of three main elements:

  • Stepper motor;
  • Spring;
  • Rod with a cone-shaped needle at the end.

The idle speed controller is mounted on the throttle body with a pair of screws.

Symptoms

In no case should you ignore the signs of failure of the idle speed sensor on your injection or carburetor VAZ 2109. At first, this will cause discomfort while driving, but soon it can cause a serious accident.

There are several main symptoms that may indicate problems with IAC:

  • Turnovers spontaneously begin to increase, then decrease;
  • When you turn on a cold power unit, the speed does not increase;
  • When using additional electrically dependent devices, such as headlights or a heater, idling speed immediately begins to drop;

Having determined that the old idle speed sensor has already worked its way out on the VAZ 2109, it needs to be replaced. The procedure is quite feasible without outside help.

Replacement or cleaning

Practice shows that in a fairly large number of cases, a simple cleaning of the idle speed controller allows you to restore its performance. Therefore, we advise you to try this method first. And if he does not give a result, then it will not be difficult to replace the device.

  1. Buy a container of carburetor cleaner. In this case, your engine may well be injection. It's just that this composition is great for cleaning the IAC and not only.
  2. Disconnect the block with wires from the sensor, unscrew the two fasteners and directly remove the affected regulator itself.
  3. Clean the regulator from accumulated debris, dirt, be sure to clean the needle itself and the spring. You need to do this with a carburetor cleaner. Use improvised means in order to tidy up a fairly compact device.
  4. Be sure to clean the idle speed controller seat on the throttle assembly. This is where the cone-shaped needle of the XX sensor enters.
  5. After completing the cleaning of the device, return it to its place and check it in operation.
  6. If the cleaning did not bring the desired result, the engine continues to behave inappropriately, you will have to purchase a new regulator and install it in place of the old sensor.
  7. Before replacing, be sure to turn off the car by disconnecting the negative terminal from the battery, then disconnect the block with the supply wires, unscrew the mounting screws and remove the device.
  8. Reassemble in reverse order.

IAC (idle speed controller) is a very important thing. The engine will be able to run without the IAC, and you will even be able to drive a car with a failed IAC, albeit with difficulty. However, such a trip will only be to the nearest repair site, because. you will have to constantly "gas up" - the speed will instantly drop every time you release the gas pedal, and the engine will strive to stall, which is extremely inconvenient.

What does RHK do? It regulates the passage of air through the bypass channel of the throttle assembly. Thus, the main air flow is controlled by the position of the throttle, but even if the throttle is closed (the gas pedal is released), the IAC opens the bypass channel, thereby maintaining the idle speed. It also determines the speed when starting and warming up the engine.

The IAC working tool is a rod with a tip that covers the opening of the bypass channel. The rod moves thanks to a stepper motor located inside the IAC, which in turn is controlled by the ECU. If the stem is extended, the bypass channel is closed, otherwise it is open. Along the way, one point should be noted: the IAC is not diagnosed, and if it malfunctions, it is useless to watch engine errors.

The photo below shows the bypass channel of the throttle assembly with the IAC removed, marked: 1 - inlet of the absorber purge hose (not relevant to the topic), 2 - inlet of the bypass channel (air intake from the air filter), 3 - outlet of the bypass channel (air supply into cylinders). It is in hole 2 that the IAC tip rests.

What IAC is suitable for VAZ-2108, LADA Priora, LADA Kalina?

The question of interchangeability is very burning. In stores, they hang you from three boxes. For example, they may indicate that this one is for Kalina, and this one is with a certain "thin needle". Naturally, the prices will differ, but it is not so much the price that hurts, but the ignorance of the sellers. So, for VAZ, there are two types of IAC - for "front-wheel drive" and for Chevrolet Niva (or maybe for a simple "Niva"). They are designed for different engine volumes and, as a result, passing air.
Below are absolutely interchangeable IACs (do not pay attention to the extended stem): 2112-1148300-02 - stood on the injector "eight", 2112-1148300-04 - the one that was presented as "Kalinovsky", and which was successfully delivered to the VAZ- 2108 (engine VAZ-2111). If you look in the passport 2112-1148300-04, it will not say about any "Kalina", and the part index does not say anything about it either.

How to replace IAC with VAZ

The replacement, it would seem, is elementary, but it can fray the nerves. You don't need to take anything extra. The IAC is held on by two screws, it stands tightly in the throttle assembly, thanks to the rubber ring. This is the ring that loves to get on your nerves. The manual says that you need to put the ring on the IAC, lubricate it with oil and insert the regulator, but it didn’t happen - it doesn’t get up! We need to do it differently: we insert the ring into the seat in the throttle assembly, and after that we put the IAC, then it, using its conical shape, gets up without problems.

IAC - idle speed controller VAZ 2114, which is also often called a sensor, performs the functions of regulating in automatic mode and idling stabilization.

General information about the regulator

The described idle sensor is one of the key components, which, together with other devices, ensures the uninterrupted and coordinated functioning of the entire "organism" of the vehicle.

It is not difficult to find the element of interest to us, it is located near the sensor that controls the throttle. As a rule, the regulator is connected to the throttle mechanism with small screws. In rare cases, there is also the option of attaching the sensor with varnish.
