What has changed in restyling bmw x1. Choosing a BMW X1 E84 with mileage: transmission surprises and an unsuccessful “aspirated”

The lowest-priced X1 trim includes 17-inch alloy wheels, body-coloured power side mirrors with integrated LED indicators, LED taillights, fog lights, heated seats, leather steering wheel, trip computer, USB communication, air conditioning with microfilter, BMW Professional radio with CD/MP3 player, six speakers and two-line display, illuminated glove box, center console cupholders and door pockets. Options include light and rain sensors, a rearview camera, leather upholstery, power front seats with position memory, a heated steering wheel, an electric sunroof, a panoramic roof with a sunshade, a Bluetooth hands-free system, an automatic parking brake, and a premium audio system. The manufacturer allows you to choose the xLine or Sport Line design line and add individual touches.

The range of engines opens with a 2-liter 150-horsepower gasoline engine (sDrive 18i AT), its Double-VANOS camshaft system provides acceleration and confident traction already at low revs, and the Valvetronic system contributes to greater power output with low fuel consumption. The xDrive 20i BMW TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder petrol engine produces 184 hp. The two diesel units are also available in 2-litre 4-cylinder versions. The xDrive20d motor produces 184 hp. already from 1750 rpm and a maximum torque of 380 Nm, with a fuel consumption of just 4.9 liters per 100 km. The most powerful option is the 218-horsepower TwinPower Turbo diesel with its 450 Nm of torque (from 1500 rpm). It is able to accelerate the BMW X1 xDrive25d to 100 km in just 6.8 seconds. BMW X1 modifications offer several transmissions: 6-speed manual, 6-speed "automatic" Steptronic (offered for sDrive 18i AT) or 8-speed automatic transmission Steptronic with electronic selector and adaptive control system.

Cars with all-wheel drive are additionally equipped with the Performance Control torque distribution system, which corrects the behavior of the car in various driving situations. The Servotronic system adjusts the steering force depending on the speed. The BMW EfficientDynamics package enhances fuel efficiency and reduces environmental impact with Brake Energy Regeneration, start-stop function, ECO PRO mode for up to 15% fuel savings and other technical features. The weight distribution of the car deserves a mandatory mention, which has been brought to a ratio of almost 50:50, which contributes to excellent stability, dynamism and maneuverability.

The high level of safety of the BMW X1 is confirmed by the presence of Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) as standard. If the driver depresses the brake pedal during fast cornering, Cornering Brake Control (CBC), which is an evolution of the ABS anti-lock braking system to improve vehicle control when braking in corners, will take effect. It is also included in serial equipment and serves as an additional guarantee of stability, preventing skidding. Another regular “trick” is the descent assistance system. In addition, the BMW X1 is equipped with six airbags: frontal airbags for the driver and front passenger, head protection curtains in the front and rear seats, as well as side airbags integrated into the front seatbacks.

The BMW X1 is a great replacement for the conventional station wagon and more practical in terms of ride height, visibility and versatility to meet the basic needs of the modern city dweller. With a sports suspension, the car performs well when driving on winding country roads; thanks to the xDrive system, it demonstrates easy and safe movement off the asphalt. All these qualities combined, plus efficiency, provided the car with one of the leading positions in the crossover class. In the Russian market, used cars of the initial years of production make up, although not a very large group, but they are interesting for their affordable price and are represented, among other things, by pre-styling 3-liter modifications.

The claims to the brakes of the X1 are at a minimum. Perhaps, only the ABS unit can “buy” when the niche in which it is installed is clogged and start to fail, but no more serious problems are expected. Not very cheap pad sensors are not a problem, just change the pads in advance. Brake discs are not too expensive, and pads cost a penny. The resource of disks is usually two or three pad replacements, and pads run 20-30 thousand kilometers - a quite reasonable resource by modern standards, although high-quality non-original disks can last a little more, especially if you choose "soft" pads. The brake system is very sensitive to the quality of the brake fluid, it is recommended not to forget about the replacement intervals.

The suspension here is also without surprises. The most wear elements during active movement are the ball bearings in the front and the hydraulic support of the lower front arm: their resource is about 40-80 thousand kilometers for original parts. Moreover, the hydraulic support is often incorrectly diagnosed even in a specialized service, and steering vibrations are attributed to problems with tires or the brake system.

Engines and power

2.0 l, 116-245 l. With.

Of the minor "surprises" - the lack of sale of liners of the anti-roll bar, it is supposed to be replaced only as an assembly. In practice, the owners, of course, put rubber bands from E91.

The only nuance is that the "native" elastic bands are glued, therefore, when replacing new ones, it is also recommended to stick them to the stabilizer to save the resource. The area where the fasteners are located is heavily polluted, and if this is not done, the resource of the parts will be offensively small - about 10-20 thousand kilometers.

Behind everything is quite reliable, the main thing is not to forget to monitor the condition of the silent blocks of the subframe on powerful versions. Otherwise, the outer hinges of the bearing arm and diagonal “links” with two silent blocks are the first to predictably fail. With them, you can count on 70-100 thousand resources on good roads - the rest of the elements also depend heavily on driving style and load.

And, by the way, about tires: like on many other Bavarian cars, there is no room for rolling, since the X1 is regularly equipped with RunFlat tires. But their profile - higher than on passenger cars - makes the tire noticeably stiffer.

Cost of front/rear brake pads

Price for original:

5 571 / 3 806 rubles

Many note that when switching to “regular” rubber, the car becomes much more comfortable, and at the same time less demanding on the condition of the suspension. With standard tires, X1 pleases not only with good handling, but also with increased requirements for the condition of shock absorbers and suspension mounts, as well as the condition of all hinges, silent blocks and supports.

The steering here is conventional, with a hydraulic rack and an optional Servotronic module. But the rail, unfortunately, is leaking. The problem is weak seals and rod corrosion. However, the bulkhead has been mastered, and a thorough check of the rail is recommended when buying and at each MOT. So, if the fluid in the power steering reservoir still decreases, the repair price will be from 15 thousand rubles.

Transmission

The first serious surprises lie in wait for potential X1 buyers right here. No, there are no problems with manual transmissions, and gears and electric motors still die in transfer cases - this is not a surprise. And the automatic transmission here has long been known. With engines of the N52 series of early releases, automatic transmissions GM 6L45R, six-speed, are most often found. Later production cars usually have a ZF 6HP19 automatic transmission. The same automatic transmission is often found in combination with atmospheric engines of the N46B20 series, from 2011 to 2015, but GM automatic transmissions were also installed on some cars. Since 2009, almost all diesel cars and cars with engines of the N20B20 series have been equipped with the new ZF 8HP45Z eight-speed automatic transmission.

The GM transmission of this series is very reliable, because it is designed for large trucks and digests torque up to 450 Nm. The design flaws of the predecessors in the face of the 5L40 have almost disappeared - the lobe pump has been improved, the materials and shape of the rotor have been changed, the gas turbine engine has become more reliable, and its blocking is significantly more resourceful and pollutes the oil less. With a timely replacement of the fluid, the box goes for a long time.

It often gets into repairs in the winter due to a “childish” problem - the gear selection rod freezes. With runs over 150 thousand, intermediate repairs are often required with the replacement of linear solenoids. If you drive with jerks, then not the mechanics, but the electronics may break - the automatic transmission control unit assembly with solenoids. GDT repair most often happens with runs over 200-250 thousand, but in the case of a “sporty” driving style, the resource can be half as much.

The mechanical part suffers mainly from dirty oil - problems start with slow shifting 2-3 and reverse gear, then - shocks when engaging all gears, which will already require expensive repairs. In general, this gearbox is a very successful design, although it lags behind the ZF automatic transmission in terms of driving characteristics.

ZF six-steppers have long been known to all services. The first experience of introducing electronics into the automatic transmission itself with the formation of "mechatronics" was to some extent brilliant. The transition to more economical hydraulic circuits and improved kinematics was also a breakthrough. But the owners remember the excellent dynamics and the very expensive and frequent repairs of these transmissions.

Runs of 200 thousand kilometers are the limit, while repairs are extremely voluminous and expensive. On boxes of those series that were installed on X1, most often breakdowns are associated with mechatronics failures, but in this case it does not change entirely. In most cases, the matter is limited to cleaning and replacing the separator plate and monitoring the operation of loaded solenoids. The resource problems of this series of automatic transmissions begin after 150 thousand kilometers: first of all, it needs to replace the gas turbine engine blocking linings, and if the oil has not been changed or changed rarely, then all the bushings and the oil pump have to be replaced. For those who like to “press down the sneaker”, each time the resource of the gas turbine engine drops to hundreds of thousands, but even with a very calm ride, the linings are unlikely to last up to 200-250 - the box quite actively uses the possibility of partial blocking even with calm movement.

The eight-speed automatic transmission 8HP45Z is famous for its resource dependence on driving style, as well as excellent opportunities for electronic diagnostics of its condition. For details, you can refer to the material on the "five". Generally speaking, the resource has fallen a little more, but the number of serious “mechatronics” failures in this series of boxes is less, and it better tolerates harsh conditions and overheating. True, it is also more expensive to repair than its six-speed predecessors.

Actually, the automatic transmission resource of modern BMWs is not a surprise, as is the price of repairs. Surprises begin with the front gearbox, which, for all its light load, often turns out to be without oil and with damaged bearings. However, howling when releasing gas can also be caused by problems with the transfer case. With the younger series of engines, a too weak transfer case of the ATC35L series was installed, which corny does not withstand off-road "exploits". The stronger ATC350 holds up noticeably better - it is also put in place of the “youngest” in case the latter fails.

Yes, and the rear gearbox on versions 28iX and 25dX tends to “come off to the fullest”. If you miss the moment of separation of one or even two silent blocks of fastening, then you can “get” to replace the drive shafts as an assembly.

Fortunately, there is nothing more to break here. Unless the resource of anthers SHRUS in front is small: it is recommended to change them every 50 thousand kilometers. They, as a rule, begin to "sweat" in the summer, and in winter the loss of tightness can be missed, and then the hinge itself will have to be changed.

Motors

N46 radiator cost

Price for original:

20 369 rubles

Most of the machines are equipped with atmospheric engines of the N46B20 series and diesel N47B20. Of the common difficulties, there is a very dense layout of radiators, and on supercharged engines, the intercooler shape is also not very successful - it is very difficult to flush it. But we'll start with the more popular X1 diesel engine.

Diesels of the N47 series are good for everyone - traction, power and efficiency. Everything, except for a good chance to ruin the owner and the characteristic timing noise that is clearly audible in the cabin. Motors until 2011 have a frankly small timing chain resource, which is located here on the flywheel side. Of course, the price of replacing it is extremely high, since the procedure includes removing the engine. Well, the intake manifold flaps, tending to get into the cylinders over time, and capricious piezo injectors complete the picture.

If the chains were changed under warranty, then you can count on a resource of about 250 thousand kilometers before the bulkhead, but some of the cars did not get into the recall campaign, and the owners consider the timing chain to be “eternal”, so there are still chances to buy a problematic copy. Usually, in such machines, the timing breaks off at runs from 80 thousand, but the upper limit fluctuates greatly. Part of the machines could have undergone warranty repairs until 2011, with the replacement of the crankshaft and chains with an “intermediate”, but also an unsuccessful option - in this case, there is still a chance for the timing chains to slip and the oil pump circuit to break, but with slightly higher mileage than the original version .

The resource of piezo injectors is limited to approximately 150-200 thousand kilometers, and they can cause a lot of trouble. In the event of a leak, which is typical for them, either a water hammer or burnout of the piston can occur. Therefore, it is recommended to check the nozzles for the presence of series in the recall campaign. Against the backdrop of these complexities, little things like current heat exchangers, the presence of options without a heater, a “buggy” EGR and a clogged particulate filter are just nonsense. Otherwise, the motor is very good - if it was taken care of and the oil was changed on time, then it is quite capable of pleasing the owner of such a car.

But the petrol N46 is unlikely to please. Many people think that a two-liter naturally aspirated engine is much simpler than diesels and turbocharged N20s. Apparently, because there are so many cars with him. But in practice, this is a set of absurdities hung on a two-liter "aspirated".

Complicated throttleless inlet, high thermostat temperature, adjustable oil pump - all this reduces reliability and increases the cost of servicing the banal "four" to a disproportionate value for its performance. In addition, the motor is famous for its banal oil burner. And let the fans of the brand say that this is good, since the oil is constantly updated, but this is precisely the result of coking of the piston group due to unsuccessful draining of oil from the oil scraper ring groove, its unsuccessful shape, low heat zone and thin compression rings. Completing the picture is an electronic oil level sensor, which sometimes fails, as a result of which the engine is sent to the trash quickly and easily.

The timing chain resource is about 150 thousand kilometers, the Valvetronic mechanism can withstand the same amount with regular oil. In principle, everything can be put in order: replace the piston group with a modernized one, change the timing, clean and sort out the engine ... But most of the owners of such machines simply add oil. Therefore, it is recommended for purchase only if you carefully read this paragraph, and all of the above does not bother you. In any other case, it is better to take either the time-tested "six" N52B30, the most successful of its series. Its problems are approximately similar to the N46 series, but stretched out in time by two to two and a half times. Another alternative is the N20 petrol, a completely new supercharged engine. Of the advantages of the notorious "aspirated" - perhaps the relative simplicity and maintainability: there are repair dimensions, and spare parts, and methods for restoring all nodes. And finding a contract unit is not a problem.

BMW X1 E84
Fuel consumption per 100 km

N20B20 in two forcing options - the motor is significantly newer and in terms of characteristics it is not equal to the old N46. True, the cost of restoring such an advanced engine - all-aluminum, with a "cunning" piston group geometry, adjustable oil pump, cooling system, direct injection and turbocharging - is many times higher, and the piston group resource with a slight boost is equal to the timing resource on the N46. However, while cars with it are noticeably fresher, better serviced and have noticeably fewer minor problems. And yes, they run much better.

Of the "special" troubles - the leakage of the electric pump of the cooling system: it is the main and only one here, its price is quite high, and there are no cheap substitutes. There are still leaks in the oil cup: until 2014 it was plastic, and inside the partition could not withstand the pressure of the oil. In this regard, it is highly recommended (if it has not been done yet under warranty) to replace it with a glass number 11 42 7 548 032 with a heat exchanger number 11 42 7 525 333 - these are already all-aluminum parts.

The timing resource with active movement is less than 100 thousand kilometers, and the signs of the death of the oil pump drive chain among those who like to “burn” on a cold engine are also observed with runs of less than 70. Unfortunately, the motor was replaced with a newer series without waiting for debugging. In addition to these troubles, there is always a small chance for piston scuffing, and the control electronics podsbait regularly. Variants with different power differ in the piston group, and chipping significantly reduces the engine life due to an increased tendency to detonation and poor tuning. But on the other hand, a power of the order of 350 or more forces is quite achievable.

Summary

As you can see, the X1 is a good car. Too simple in appearance by modern standards of the brand, but nevertheless fits well into the niche allotted to it. It is deliberately simple in many ways - which is good, because it reduces the cost of maintenance, and as for driving pleasure, then there is enough of it, because the chassis is not badly tuned.

The best option in terms of mechanics is most likely a car with a straight-six and a GM automatic under the hood, but a diesel engine with a replaced timing, fresh injectors and no additional problems will easily compete with it in terms of dynamics, and in terms of fuel consumption and general practicality will be noticeably ahead. With low mileage, you can take a chance and take a car with a turbocharged gasoline engine: it is really good, and in combination with an eight-speed automatic transmission, it shows miracles of dynamics and economy. It is also recommended to all fans of serious tuning.

BMW X1 E84 restyling 2012-present

R restyling of the BMW X1 slightly refreshed the already noble appearance of the crossover. The hand of the designers touched the contours of the bumpers, the radiator grille, the mirrors, into which the “turn signals” were integrated, and the optics. True, the changes in the latter are almost imperceptible.

In general, the crossover with a German surname remained the same predatory, sporty and solid.

BMW X1 crossover engines

No less impressive is the range of engines. It includes 2 petrol (1.8 and 2 liters), as well as a pair of diesel engines (2- and 2.5-liter).

The 1.8-liter engine stands somewhat apart. Firstly, it is atmospheric, and secondly, only it comes with rear-wheel drive. However, the power of 150 liters. sec., thrust of 200 Nm of torque and acceleration to hundreds in 10.4 seconds. enough for a comfortable ride.

But after all, everyone is used to recalling bright dynamics at the word “BMW”. And such an owner can give a more powerful version. This list is torn off by a 2-liter modification that runs on gasoline. Such a motor has a turbocharger, develops 184 hp. With. and produces 270 Nm of torque. Acceleration to "weave" takes only 7.9 seconds.

It is followed by a 2-liter diesel engine with the same power - 184 "horses", but the torque is much higher - 380 Nm. This engine exchanges a hundred in 8.1 seconds. The true "sportsman" is the diesel "two and five". Under the hood, such a car has 218 “horses” and a thrust of 450 Nm of torque. This version just shoots on acceleration - 6.8 seconds. up to 100 km / h - you have to remind yourself that you are in a crossover.

Drive and gearbox BMW X1

All versions (except 1.8) come with all-wheel drive. In addition, only the 1.8-liter modification is equipped with a 6-speed AT, while for the rest, both a 6-speed MT and an 8-band “automatic” are available. The only pity is that the first 2 gears of the automatic transmission are too short - this somewhat “lubricates” acceleration.

BMW X1 on asphalt and off-road

Controllability The BMW X1 can be called a reference - the rear independent multi-link suspension does its job. Power steering is transparent, and ventilated disc brakes confidently dampen the dynamics. So even a wet surface will not become an obstacle for drive lovers.

But for all this I had to pay with a rollback from off-road positions - a small ground clearance and bumper overhangs do not have even the slightest bit of serious off-road to storm.

Salon BMW X1 after restyling, it almost did not change, which, however, was not required - it looks quite modern, and there will be no complaints about ergonomics.

Be that as it may, good visibility, anatomical seats, a comfortable plump steering wheel and a perfectly readable dashboard are impressive. If we add to this the logical and convenient placement of buttons in the center of the dashboard, it becomes clear that this is one of the best crossovers in the segment.

BMW X1 price, at first glance, it is quite adequate - 1,315,000 rubles. for the base version. But for all-wheel drive and automatic, you will have to pay 1,545,000 rubles, and for diesel and AT, the dealer will require from 1,550,000 rubles. The top version costs a lot - 1,770,000 rubles. But if you order all the available options into it, you will have to fork out another 739,253 rubles, and this is not counting the extended packages.

Yes ... BMW and "cheap" are almost incompatible concepts ...

Overview of the BMW X1 crossover. Updated design. Specifications

The first premium compact crossover in 2009 was the BMW X1, cars such as the Audi Q3 and Range Rover Evoque appeared only 2 years later. But by this time, the Munich engineers had already prepared a number of changes and updates for the model, as well as a brand new, two-liter biturbodiesel.

In recent years, the Bavarians have introduced a lot of new products and updates. For example, in 2011, the new BMW X1 was introduced to the world, a little later the updated X3 appeared, and more recently it was held. After all, it is not in vain that it is considered the most affordable crossover in the brand line.

Restyling BMW X1

When restyling the BMW X1, the station wagon of the third series in the back of the E91 was taken as the basis. In the course of modifications and updates, the dimensions of the X1 have not changed much. The only thing is that, due to new bumpers and updates to the rear diffuser, the length has changed, and even then by 2-3 cm, which is not visually noticeable at all. There are standard (for facelift) modified headlights, fog lights, turn signal repeaters in the side mirrors.

The review of the BMW X1 did not find other changes in the appearance of this crossover. Before the restyling of the BMW X1, many criticized the model for excessive (visual) loading of the front of the car. In this connection, the shape of the car's bumper has changed with the previous proportions preserved, and visually it looks “lighter” (than the X1 of the previous series), sleeker and caught up with the general style of the brand (got on the same line with the X3, so to speak). From previous versions of X1 and X3, he took the difference in design styles, which have become more accessible to customers. These versions are called xLine, Sport Line and M Sport.

In the xLine, the radiator grilles and lower bumper spoilers are designed in titanium style. The Sport Line has more black than others, even the side mirrors are painted in it. These versions also differ in interior decoration: door sills, seat and interior colors. For the M-Sport version, as before, special ones are offered: suspension, body kit and Alcantara trim.

Video review of the BMW X1 - interior and exterior

But more surprising is the ability of the Germans to correctly and successfully use the small space of the car. After all, the car is no more than 4.5 m long and at the same time there is a long engine compartment in front, the trunk fits 420 liters, and the interior can easily accommodate up to 5 people (although at the beginning it seems cramped).

Test drive BMW X1

Those who previously had the opportunity to drive a BMW will not find anything new in the panel and the design of the front of the cabin, everything that is needed is in its place. However, those who drove the previous X1 series will note that the quality of the finish has improved significantly. First of all, this concerns the steering wheel, it itself has been updated and deployed to the driver. Despite the fact that the X1 is a crossover, its landing is low, in the best traditions of BMW sedans.

The Germans gave this high (in terms of level) crossover the best driving qualities. After all, only when you get out of it do you remember high-profile tires, a raised center of mass, a ground clearance of 180 mm. On the road though, this car is a traditional BMW.

And all thanks to the high level of control: steering feedback is ideal, there is no relaxation at low speeds and excessive heaviness at high speeds. Banks for "parquet" are small, it enters into turns smoothly and with constant readiness, it passes along the arc as if "stuck" to the asphalt with all wheels. With excess gas, a skid, which is standard for rear-wheel drive, occurs, which can be extinguished before the stabilization system is turned on. It seems that any driver has a complete understanding with this machine. With all this, precise controllability does not impair the smoothness of the ride.

Crossover BMW X1 - off-road qualities

The BMW X1 crossover - quite calmly endures all the bumps, but this does not mean that it can be worn like crazy on potholes and potholes, but it surpassed its foundation (3-Series) in this matter by a lot. The new suspension settings did not take away anything from handling, but they greatly added to the smoothness of the ride. He passes the pits surprisingly softly and silently. Which allows us to boldly declare that the X1 of the new series is much more suitable for the roads of Russia than the "troika".

Driving on asphalt

BMW X1 - allows the driver to completely relax on the freeway, and he does not notice small ruts at all. In a straight autobahn, it very easily gains a maximum of 230 km / h, while not losing stability, while maintaining a low noise level and a small amount of fuel consumption. Even at a constant speed of 200 km/h, it does not consume more than 14 liters of fuel. And in urban mode, its limit is no more than 8.5 liters per 100 km. And all this thanks to a high-tech completely new biturbodiesel.

BMW X1 engines

Previously, the standard for the X1 was a two-liter 23d series turbodiesel (204 hp and 400 Nm). The new 25d unit is built on the same technology as the 23d, with increased boost pressure and reprogrammed electronics, which allows to increase the maximum power and torque to 218 horsepower and 450 Nm, respectively. Today, for a BMW car with the 28i xDrive index, a two-liter four-cylinder biturbo engine is offered on order, and not a three-liter gasoline aspirated engine, as before. The 3.0-liter petrol engine developed a maximum of 258 l/s and 300 Nm, and the turbodiesel power figures are very close to it, given that it is already only 2 liters, and in terms of torque it has gone far ahead.

The 25d turbodiesel represents a stage in the evolution of BMW's four-cylinder diesel engines, the 20d and 23d models. The 20d diesel engine has one turbine, and the 23d has two, just like the 25d. At the same time, the 25d engine is equipped with a fuel injection system that atomizes it at a pressure of 200 bar. However, critics note that this engine does not have a "beautiful voice" when accelerating. The new BMW turbo engines are very economical, environmentally friendly, and light. They have interchangeable components, which has already ousted atmospheric “sixes” from the market. The 25d turbo engine has great power and traction, from just 1500 rpm it takes high acceleration.

He gets along remarkably well with an eight-speed automatic transmission (before updates, the X1 was the owner of a six-speed transmission). The very moment of switching can only be felt with a very dynamic and nervous ride. In a calm rhythm, gear shifting is not noticeable at all, in the best German traditions. You can learn about gear shifting by small (light) jumps in the tachometer and a changed timbre of the engine.

In sports mode, you generally forget about the paddles on the steering wheel. When the maximum speed is reached, the “automatic” box automatically switches to a step up. Compared to all competitors in terms of chassis and driving ability, the BMW X1 still remains in first place.

Also, it is worth noting that during the test drive it was not possible to find out the qualities of the X1 as an SUV. And the point here is not at all all-wheel drive, but the fact that there is a large front overhang and 180mm. clearance is unlikely to allow the X1 to compete on a par with SUVs. Yes, the BMW manufacturer has never made strict requirements for the X-series regarding cross-country ability. In this case, all-wheel drive is used to obtain certain driving qualities. But all this does not mean that it is possible to underestimate its qualities and dignity. The BMW X1 crossover can easily drive onto a curb, calmly drive along a small rut or climb a slope. For example, on the BMW 3 Series (on the basis of which the X1 was created), you should not drive into the mud or try to drive it on a fishing trip.

Video test drive BMW X1

During the review of the BMW X1, it becomes clear that the difference between the BMW 3 Series and the X1 is small. But it was she who made it possible for the concern in three years to sell more than 300 thousand copies of the X1 (and this despite the fact that we are talking about the X1 models of the previous generation). And now, after the updates and after the USA has been added to the list of countries to which the BMW X1 will be available, the number of sales should increase markedly.

BMW X1 interior

As for the interior of the BMW X1, it is worth noting that the interior design of the company's cars has always been distinguished by the high quality of the materials used in the decoration and the economy of interior space. And the interior of the updated BMW X1 is no exception. Interior trim is premium quality and even the wood used in the interior looks appropriate. The seats are very tight, which provides a low sporty fit in the crossover.

Not fixed (and not fixed in principle) the automatic transmission selector is perceived as a familiar and convenient tool. Only two will be comfortable in the rear seats. A third person behind will be hindered by a very high transmission tunnel. In general, there is as much space in it as in the third series, it seems to be not pressing anywhere, but not very spacious either. There are no additional amenities. The seat is very rigid and the backs are not adjustable. Speaking of technical specifications:

X1, the youngest in the family of BMW crossovers, is quite young by today's standards. It appeared only in 2009. However, an updated version was prepared this fall. Restyling? Not really. Or rather, not only. Representatives of the Bavarian concern prefer to use the term LCI - Life Cycle Impulse, which is understandable and without translation.

Inconspicuous but noticeable

Naturally, it was not without fresh touches in appearance. But they are just the tip of the LCI iceberg. And the updated X1 also received an expanded range of engines: first of all, changes took place on the “diesel front”. Even in our market, less accustomed to heavy-fuel engines, demand for diesel versions of BMW crossovers has already exceeded interest in gasoline ones - sales proportions are estimated at 55:45. So, the 2-liter diesel was tightened up in terms of performance, and the older version appeared - with the same volume, but boosted to 218 hp. and issuing 450 Nm of torque. The X1 LCI has three petrol powertrains, all of them 2-liter. Junior sDrive18i, installed on the only rear-wheel drive version in the family, with a working volume of 1995 cc. cm has a power of 150 hp. And the 1997 cc, which equip the xDrive20i and the flagship xDrive28i, is made using TwinPower Turbo technology (with dual supercharging and a common exhaust manifold) and produces 184 or 245 hp. respectively.

Another innovation was the appearance now on diesel versions of an 8-speed automatic transmission. According to the manufacturer, this is a unique offer in this class of vehicles. A modern, fast and almost imperceptible automatic machine is now available for the entire X1 line, except for the youngest sDrive18i. But as an option, you can choose the old 6-speed automatic transmission. The main habitat of SAV (Sport Activity Vehilcle - “cars for an active lifestyle”) is still a city. And no matter how apologist for mechanics the buyer is, he has to jostle in city traffic jams regularly, and the automatic machine is simply more convenient. However, the Bavarians do not cease to remind that modern automatic transmissions do not interfere with real drive at all, they cope with switching faster than a person can do.

Now the diesel versions in the base are equipped with the Servotronic system, which optimizes the intensity of the power steering. So far, the electronic steering has taken root only in rear-wheel drive X1, and all cars equipped with XDrive all-wheel drive remain true to the good old and, from the driver's point of view, more transparent hydraulics. Not without small improvements in the suspension and security systems.

Efficient doesn't mean boring!

Particular emphasis is placed on the full integration of the Efficient Dynamics system into the updated car. And do not wrinkle your nose, they say, the next curtsy towards draconian environmental standards! Dynamics is by no means for a red word. For example, when, during straight-line acceleration, the excess load is removed from the generator (recovery of braking energy will help to recharge the battery) or the steering wheel (at this time, its relaxed state is not necessary at all), the acceleration dynamics only gets better. And so - in many ways. Energy is saved on everything that is not fully used at a particular moment. Efficient Dynamics controls all consumer variables: chassis and transmission settings, the position of the blinds behind the grille, which affects engine temperature and aerodynamics ... In total, 36 different parameters are in the system's field of view!

Brighter, lighter and… linear

Well, now - about the external signs of LCI. To be honest, it does not apply to the masterpieces of automotive design. Nevertheless, the X1 has become one of the group's most successful crossovers. And since the time for a global change in appearance has not yet come, the experts took up individual elements of the model. The new bumper design made it possible to get rid of excess unpainted plastic without spoiling the image of an off-road vehicle. Visually, the plastic lining of the lower edge of the sidewalls of the body also seems to be lighter. Finally appeared in the mirror housings doublers turn signals. The head optics has become more modern, enlivened by the LEDs of the "eyebrows" of running lights and branded ring headlight rims.

Four new colors have appeared in the range of paints, and with a juicy orange, which has become a presentation for LCI.

Of the interior updates, the only thing that catches the eye is the modernized multifunctional steering wheel, the changed shape of the air ducts, the contours of the central display, now more reminiscent of the soaring design of older models, the modified light control unit in the lower left corner of the front panel. Improved materials inserts, skins and finishes. The revolution did not happen, but, perhaps, it is not needed yet.

But the approach to package configuration has changed revolutionary. Of course, the base remains - the client is still free to choose additional equipment. But you can give preference to one of the two ready-made packages - X-Line and Sport Line. The Sport line is aimed at fans of motorsports, there are darker, contrasting and slightly cold colors - a kind of techno bias. X-Line also plays with the theme of sports, but sports outside the car - an active lifestyle, extreme leisure. And the color scheme is warmer, more natural. The assembly of all options is established at the plant in Kaliningrad. Only customers of the top xDrive28i Sport Line will have to wait - these cars must be brought from Germany. The M-set has not disappeared either, you can order it.

Four smart wheels

Alas, the time spent behind the wheel of the X1 LCI was not enough to thoroughly understand the new shades of the car's behavior on the road. It was possible to work closely only with the modes in which the xDrive all-wheel drive system manifests itself most clearly. Now on the market there are many options for all-wheel drive - permanent and plug-in, with different proportions of torque distribution. BMW emphasizes that in extreme modes - at parking speeds and speeds over 180 km / h - the crossover becomes unequivocally rear-wheel drive, as it should be true. In intermediate modes, which include most driving situations, xDrive works not just with the distribution along the axes, but with each wheel individually. This is clearly demonstrated in the course of a special exercise: on an inclined podium, three wheels are placed on special drum rollers that imitate the lack of adhesion to the surface. After a little thought (until the slipping wheels reach those same 5 km / h), xDrive transfers the load, and the crossover (however, any BMW xDrive can be in its place) begins to climb, clinging to a single wheel.

Well, we tested the operation of the transmission on a variable surface - ice, snow-ice porridge, frozen asphalt. In normal modes and at standard speeds, the X1 LCI is obedient to ... no, let's not talk to the point of boredom. It's just a normal car with a assembled, but at the same time energy-intensive suspension. Even with the ability to overcome a 60% ramp with an inflection, it remains primarily passenger in manners and is devoid of unnecessary buildup. But then we gradually began to turn off auxiliary systems: we needed to understand exactly the nuances of the all-wheel drive and the behavior of the chassis. First of all, we turn off the traction limitation: the electronics stop strangling the motor when the wheels slip. A separate position for disabling traction control (short press on the corresponding button) is also an element of assistance on climbs with poor coverage, where sometimes a little slip is simply necessary. And on the descents, the X1, like its older brothers, offers the assistance of the HDC system, which not only seeks to limit the speed to 8-11 km / h, but also makes sure that the car does not turn around on a slippery slope. Moreover, HDC is capable not only when descending with the nose forward, but also when rolling in reverse, for example, when it was not possible to overcome the climb the first time.

And now we are on a flat area, and turning off the traction control allows us to achieve more vivid manifestations of the rear-wheel drive character - to fool around a little in a skid, in slips. But just a little and wisely. Unnecessarily sweeping, and even more convulsively chaotic steering movements will be perceived as a signal of danger already by the stabilization system. She, along with the brains of xDrive, receives information about the position of the steering wheel.

By holding the stabilization disable button for 4 s, we achieve a complete deactivation of the system. However, the all-wheel drive controller continues to monitor the situation, transfer moments, and slow down spinning wheels. In contrast to the classic 4WD view, the X1 xDrive (we tried both diesel and the older petrol version) lets you steer more forcefully. A consciously larger angle of rotation becomes for the electronics, as it were, a confirmation of the driver's intention to maintain just such a sliding trajectory. And instead of the helpless plowing of the inverted front wheels, you get a completely controlled skid with a large deflection angle. At the same time, however, no one canceled the need to observe the technique of getting out of such a skid or changing direction with a “whip”, in case of an error, the electronics, if possible, will save you from turning around, but at the cost of an almost complete loss of speed. With proper operation of the steering wheel and gas, you can get almost full pleasure from such an active drive.

The updated crossover is already on sale. The tradition of raising prices for new models, alas, has not been broken. But in the basic version, this rise in price is not particularly dramatic - about 30,000 rubles. X1 sDrive19i offered for 1,290,000 rubles. The youngest of the petrol biturbo versions costs 1,455,000 rubles, but the flagship xDrive28i will cost 1,860,000 rubles. Diesels occupy an average price niche - 1,524,000 and 1,680,000 rubles. for junior and senior, respectively.
