A car is a complex unit consisting of many nodes, elements and parts. One of these nodes is, for the correct operation of which it is necessary not only to comply with the rules of operation, but also timely, as well as high-quality service.

Maintenance of a mechanical box consists in checking the oil level in the box, partial or complete oil change, flushing the manual transmission (if necessary), timely repairs, adjustments, etc. Next, we will look at when and why you need to flush the manual transmission before changing the oil.

The need to flush the manual transmission: how to flush the box, when and why

What can a decrease in the oil level in an automatic transmission lead to: the consequences of a low oil level in an automatic transmission. What should you pay attention to.

  • How to flush the automatic transmission valve body yourself: removing, disassembling, cleaning the automatic transmission valve body. What to consider when flushing, useful tips and tricks.

  • Actually the topic is as follows, one of these days will change the oil in the box on the Kraken. I wrote about the reason for the replacement in the bortovik of the car. Guess who is using what? And in general, what are your thoughts on this?

    A cursory search turned up the LIQUI MOLY website. I have a lot of respect for this brand and their products. On the internal forum of the company, I saw a tool that the manufacturer himself recommends as a flush for manual transmission:

    Pro-Line Engine Cleaner Pro-Line Motorspulung
    Vendor code:
    7507

    Professional engine flush Pro-Line Motorspulung is used for deep cleaning of the oil system. Completely dissolves any kind of dirt. Provides maximum cleanliness of the engine after flushing, cleaning all elements of the oil system. Cleaning the engine with this flush is carried out by service station professionals.

    Properties:
    Contains a unique additive package that quickly removes all types of engine contaminants, even in the most inaccessible elements of the oil system. Removes carbon deposits on the piston crown. Removes insoluble particles and engine wear products.

    Significantly reduces stubborn residue and extends new oil life
    - Thanks to a package of motor additives, it safely cleans the engine and forms a protective layer that reduces friction
    - Completely exits the system along with the old oil

    It is used in both gasoline and diesel engines. Suitable for flushing manual transmission

    Application:
    Add to warm oil before changing at the rate of 500 ml of additive per 5 liters of engine oil.
    Start the engine and let it run strictly (!) for exactly 10 minutes at idle (DO NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE BEFORE FILLING NEW OIL!).
    Drain oil, replace oil filter.
    Fill with fresh high quality oil.

    Who thinks what? Based on the description, such a gearbox flush is not a bad one.

    And I also found an interesting additive in the gearbox from the same manufacturer:

    Anti-friction additive for gear oil Getriebeoil-Additiv
    Vendor code:
    1988

    Molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) based additive specifically designed for manual transmissions and differentials. Significantly reduces wear and temperature in the friction zone. As a result, softer gear shifting, the box runs smoother and quieter, heats up less during operation. When adding an additive to old gearboxes and differentials, due to the smoothing of the tooth profile, their operation is significantly improved, gear shifting smoothness and work efficiency are increased. Thanks to MoS2, the operational reliability of the assembly and the quality of its operation are increased. It is used at each oil change for manual transmission.

    Properties:
    It contains finely dispersed molybdenum disulphide, which has a seminary structure and effectively reduces the coefficient of friction and wear. Molybdenum disulphide particles coat the friction surface, clog microroughnesses and prevent metal/metal contact, eliminating the possibility of scuffing and sticking at high loads, when the protective properties of the oil are not enough.

    Reduces friction and wear
    - Improves clarity of gear shifting
    - Remains stable properties under long-term high loads
    - Increases the reliability of the transmission
    - Reduces transmission noise
    - Improves smooth shifting
    - Ensures optimal transmission performance

    Using Getriebeoil-Additiv with every oil change can extend the life of your manual transmission and avoid potential costly repairs.

    Application:
    Use at every oil change. Depending on the degree of loading of the unit, add 20 ml of additive to 1-2 liters of new gear oil.
    Important: due to the friction reducing effect, the additive is not suitable for automatic transmissions and in limited slip differentials.

    What's new with washes?

    In this review, we will take a closer look at the new flushing additive for manual transmissions. And also find out why to wash the mechanical box when it comes time to change the oil.

    In principle, the product intended for the washing procedure was already in the assortment. This is a professional engine oil system flush, for comparison.

    It could be used, although it can still be used now, no one removed this function from it, for washing mechanical boxes. What is the inconvenience of using engine flush? The fact that a sufficiently high concentration is needed, that is, the volume of topping up the flushing fluid is quite large: half a liter per five liters of gear oil. Most often, add such an amount of oil or additives to a manual gearbox with a filling volume of 1.5-4 liters - somewhere around 2.5.

    In this case, this is quite inconvenient, therefore, a small package of 150 ml was released for the manual transmission, but a concentrated composition, which will be enough for 4 liters of gear oil.

    Accordingly, if we have 2-2.5 liters, then - half a bottle for one wash. Again, no problems with dosage, no problems with application, fill in the old gear oil, 10 minutes the car is idling, with the clutch not depressed.

    In this case, if the car is not moving, but is in neutral, then when the clutch is not depressed, all gears rotate and the oil flow is maximum. All this dust from the wear of blocking rings, synchronizers, etc. wash off; and the second point: everything is seriously running.

    At this moment, this one comes to our aid, for example, after bathing the car in water, when a small amount of moisture was drawn into the gearbox through a breather or oil seals due to a sharp temperature drop.

    In this case, corrosion begins to appear in the transmission oil, secondly, the protective properties of the oil decrease, and thirdly, when the oil is overheated, it begins to “hydrogenate” and form deposits. Unlike the engine, there are no contacts with gases, there is no ingress of unburned fuel, but still certain sources of pollution, like wearing parts, and water gets there.

    By and large, you can use it at least with each replacement, like 7507. The only question is that this product is more convenient to add, and the only situation is that you try to pour 400 grams of 7507 into 4 liters, where the control hole goes in the manual transmission.

    That is, the task will be: first, extract about 300-400 grams of transmission fluid, then fill in the additive. This is just a very inconvenient procedure. Here is 150 ml. 4 liters of flushing liquid or 75 per 2 liters are added easily and naturally, then the plug is returned to its place. So, first of all, all this is done for ease of use.

    In general, why wash the manual transmission?

    The most important thing in the procedure is to remove the effects of water ingress, which is especially true for robots with a single clutch.

    Synchronizers in such blocks operate in shock mode with increased loads. And, often, to prevent some problems, engine manufacturers put two blocking rings, respectively, there will be more metal dust in the system.

    As they accumulate in the oil, they also begin to settle on the working surfaces of the rings, especially since the material we have is almost the same as that of the ring, and, as a result, they can stick to the working surfaces or roll onto them. All this makes it difficult for the lubricant to be discharged by the ring and slows down the reaction time of the synchronizers, so flushing such transmissions is only for their benefit.

    There are two applications: take and just fill in fresh gear oil and let the box work for a fairly short period of time, and then change it again, but most often this is a very expensive pleasure, and now there is a cheaper and easier option.

    What is a gearbox flush oil? This question is of interest to many motorists. Each instruction clearly states that any change in lubricant must first be flushed with flushing oil. Traditionally, flushing oil is nothing more than the cheapest mineral oil that has added detergents and anti-wear additives. The quality of the oil does not affect the quality of the flush, so savings are welcome here.

    Flushing oil is a mixture of mineral oil and detergents that is used to clean the gearbox of old grease residues.

    Zinc and phosphorus are traditionally used as antiwear additives, and calcium is ideally suited as a detergent.

    The same components are also included in the working gear oil, but in large quantities.

    What is flushing for?

    When changing the oil, it can be very difficult to get rid of the remnants of the old oil product, which is in no hurry to leave the walls of the mechanism. Mixing fresh oil with the remnants of the old is not recommended. There is only one way out - to wash off these residues with a special liquid. The flushing fluid also neutralizes the acidic environment that has formed during the operation of the car since the last oil change. Strong contamination can only be removed manually when disassembling the gearbox.

    The principle of operation of flushing oils

    Let the engine run for a while before changing the gearbox oil. Warm grease will merge faster and better. After draining the old fluid, fill in the flushing fluid in exactly the same volume as the working fluid. Let the engine idle again. In about 20 minutes, the flushing liquid should have time to rinse the entire box. The used flushing oil must be drained and filled with working oil in its place.

    Do I need to use flush? Flushing is practically not used abroad, so you can't see flushes from Castrol or Shell on store shelves. Such manufacturers claim that, subject to all the norms of the maintenance regulations, there will be no work for flushing. But this statement is true under a number of conditions:

    1. The car must be new, from the salon.
    2. The fuel quality must be impeccable.
    3. The oil is changed frequently and the transmission is serviced regularly.

    These conditions for our country are not always feasible. Cars are not always bought in the showroom, and the recommended regulations are almost never followed. It is for such cases that flushing comes in handy.

    Market innovation. More recently, a new product has appeared on domestic shelves - LAVR. This tool opens up completely new perspectives in car maintenance. Usually, no one really thinks why it is not customary to clean the checkpoint from pollution?

    Reducers and bridges are also often left without due attention. If you think about it, these nodes have no less load than an engine in which the oil is changed regularly.

    The reason lies in the fact that car manufacturers consider these components maintenance-free. LAVR has become the first domestic product for cleaning gearboxes, drive axles and transfer mechanisms for both cars and trucks. This product is indicated for use at every oil change in these units. The manufacturer guarantees the following results:

    1. Absence of wear products during operation in the checkpoint and other units.
    2. Increased service life of units where flushing is used.
    3. Restoring the plasticity of rubber seals.
    4. The use of reducing and antifriction additives significantly enhance the effect of the use of LAVR.

    Back to index

    The procedure for using LAVR

    1. Flushing is poured directly into the old oil through the filler hole in the amount of 100 ml of flushing per 1 liter of oil.
    2. With the help of a lift or jacks, the driving wheels of the car are hung in the air.
    3. The engine starts, then it is necessary to switch gears in random order within 10 minutes.
    4. After completing this procedure, the old oil with flushing should be drained, and new oil should be poured in its place.

    Appointment. This innovative tool works on a completely new principle.

    Maintenance of the gearbox is not included in any service regulations of the car. Sometimes, if necessary, the transmission oil is changed. Oil for this most important unit is often selected according to the residual principle, which will be at hand. If the car was already in someone's hands before you, then there are no guarantees that these nodes were somehow serviced at all.

    At any service station, you will definitely be told that the gear oil in the gearbox changes its color and viscosity characteristics over time. You do not need to be a great specialist to understand the reason for such changes. Any oil product oxidizes over time, and in addition, traces of wear of the mechanism accumulate in it. Such metamorphoses cannot but affect the functionality of the entire aggregate.

    Means for flushing the checkpoint

    Recently, the 5 Minute Flush Fluid has become a very popular gearbox flush. It is intended for the purpose of flushing the engine oil system and transmission units. Rinsing effectively removes even varnish deposits on surfaces. It is used in the traditional way, as described above. Flushing oil LUXE is designed for the same purpose. This oil is based on high quality mineral oil with a sufficient amount of additives designed for maximum cleaning of surfaces. It is able to dissolve even some wear products of parts. Low viscosity contributes to the high-quality penetration of flushing into the most remote corners of the checkpoint.

    At the present stage, only additives are increasingly used, without the use of mineral oil as a base. An example of such a tool is Liqui Moly's Automatik Getriebe-Reiniger automatic transmission cleaner. This is one of the few flushes from a foreign manufacturer. This professional flush for the maintenance of automatic transmissions. Using it will get rid of a sharp gear shift. Allows you to remove a wide variety of contaminants from the box. A cleaned gearbox will last much longer.

    The use of this tool is as simple as possible. The contents of the container are poured into the preheated automatic box. The substance contained there should be enough for 9 liters of oil. While holding the brake pedal, you need to play for 10 minutes with the gear shift knob. After such washing, you can fill in fresh oil.

    There are more and more such flushes on the market, although not all motorists are unanimous on the need for their use. Many drivers, wise over many years of experience, consider flushing the gearbox with mineral oil a completely unnecessary undertaking, which will not bring any results other than spending money and time. In their opinion, a good new oil may well cope with the remnants of the old grease.

    The use of flushing fluid does not cause any disputes in only one case - when a low-quality oil product got into the box. In this case, the gearbox must be flushed.

    Another large category of drivers have absolute confidence in the mineral oil filled in by the manufacturer, and do not want to replace it under any circumstances. How many people - so many opinions, so whether or not to flush the gearbox, each driver decides for himself.

    During operation, the automatic transmission produces a certain amount of output, some of which settles on the oil filter, and the other remains in the cavities of the numerous channels of the mechanism. Over time, the dirt in the automatic transmission becomes more and more, which seriously disrupts its operation. Often, the usual replacement of the transmission fluid and the box filter is not enough to get the unit working. In such a situation, you will have to resort to flushing the automatic transmission. For those motorists who do not know about the procedure for this procedure, our resource has prepared the material presented today. Fortunately, washing the automatic transmission is quite feasible with your own hands in a more or less equipped garage.

    The meaning of washing the machine

    It has already been noted earlier that with the course of operation of the automatic transmission, the oil in its channels, and the channels themselves, are gradually polluted by the production. Dirt, represented by metal and rubber shavings, with its accumulation, begins to upset the operation of the machine, which significantly affects the comfort of its use. In order to prevent problems with the box or to get rid of existing malfunctions, many motorists resort to flushing this unit.

    The essence of washing the automatic transmission is to clean the accumulated dirt from the cavities of the box in any way possible. As a rule, such a procedure is carried out by passing a certain amount of oil through the system of channels of the box and then draining it. Much less often, special flushing agents are added to the transmission fluid or the box is completely disassembled to clean all parts manually using compressed air and gasoline.

    Note that each flushing method has a place to be, and will be useful for the functioning of the automatic transmission. Properly carried out cleaning, at a minimum, will be able to:

    • Reduce the risk of box malfunctions;
    • Extend the overall life of the node;
    • Correct its work, of course, if any violations appear and are directly related to the contamination of the channels of the mechanism.

    Despite the ambiguous opinion about automatic transmission flushing in the automotive sector, it is worth noting that it still has some sense. However, to get a real effect, we repeat, a competent approach to cleaning the box is extremely important.

    Frequency of automatic transmission cleaning

    Flushing the automatic transmission is definitely the event that should not be ignored during the operation of this unit. But how often do you do it? Let's figure it out. In general, it is recommended to clean the channels of the box every time you change the oil. That is, the frequency of these procedures coincides and amounts to 30-70,000 kilometers of operational mileage. We can definitely say that the more often the automatic transmission is flushed and the transmission fluid is changed, the longer the car's transmission will last.

    Note that there is also the possibility of premature cleaning of the box, which takes place when:

    • problems in the process of shifting gears;
    • twitching of the car during acceleration;
    • unstable operation of the automatic transmission modes and the assembly as a whole.

    Such problems are often provoked precisely by the contamination of the channels of the machine, therefore, when they appear, the unit should be cleaned first. If flushing did not help, then you should look for a malfunction in specific elements of the automatic transmission.

    Flushing procedure

    As it was clarified above, it is necessary to flush the automatic transmission, but it is important to do it efficiently and competently. In most cases, the box is cleaned at the appropriate service stations, since it is they who have special flushing machines, without which flushing the unit is simply impossible. If the automatic transmission requires disassembly and replacement of some components, then it is more rational to disassemble the device, rinse all its elements in gasoline and blow the channels with compressed air.

    In any case, before cleaning the automatic transmission, you need to prepare the required tool. The minimum list of required items includes:

    • double the volume of transmission fluid, one of which is required for flushing the assembly, and the other for filling after cleaning;
    • a standard set of wrenches, heads and screwdrivers (when removing the automatic transmission, you will also need hexagons, a special box puller, an automatic pump and gasoline);
    • container for draining old oil;
    • rags;
    • viewing pit, flyover or lift;
    • flushing device (if desired, rinse the box without removing it from the machine).

    So, to understand the possible procedures for flushing automatic transmissions, let's look at each possible option.

    Standard washing of the machine

    First, let's pay attention to the procedure for cleaning the automatic transmission without removing it from the car, that is, flushing the assembly at the service station using a special apparatus. Typically, this procedure is carried out as follows:

    1. First of all, the old oil is drained. At this stage, it is important to drain as much liquid as possible. To achieve this goal, it will be necessary to dismantle both the drain plug and the automatic transmission pan (if any), and even the gearbox (if it is possible to drain oil from it);
    2. After that, the mechanism is assembled in its original form, a special device is connected to the oil supply channels, oil is poured into it or in advance into the box and the engine starts. Within 10-15 minutes he needs to be allowed to work;
    3. Then the oil is drained again, the oil filter and the automatic transmission pan gasket are replaced. The car is assembled in its original state, and a new transmission fluid is poured into the box.

    In general, there are no particular difficulties in the washing procedure. If you wish, you can also add a special automatic transmission cleaner to the flushing oil. Note that the effectiveness of such liquids is in question, so experimenting with them is undesirable.

    Complicated box cleaning

    In addition to the standard automatic transmission flushing method, it is quite possible to clean the box cavities using a more complex technique. The essence of the latter is as follows:

    1. Oil is drained from the box;
    2. The mechanism is removed from the car;
    3. It is being dismantled;
    4. All removable elements of the automatic transmission are thoroughly washed in gasoline;
    5. Channels are blown with compressed air;
    6. All gaskets, filters and other consumables are being replaced;
    7. The box is assembled in the original design;
    8. Then installed back on the car;
    9. Oil is poured into the automatic transmission;
    10. After that, the box is run in in a gentle mode for about 4-7 days.

    Note that it is advisable to clean the machine in this way only if the box needs to be removed in connection with its repair. Otherwise, it would be more correct to flush the automatic transmission using special equipment.

    Perhaps this is the end of the most important information on today's topic. We hope that the presented material was useful for you and gave answers to your questions. Good luck with the maintenance and operation of the car!
