VAZ front-wheel drive cars of the tenth family (VAZ-2110 sedan, VAZ-2111 station wagon and VAZ-2112 hatchback) were equipped with various engines. Among them were carburetor and injection, 8 and 16-valve.

Power backbone

The VAZ 2112 engine was not created from scratch. Its design scheme with a 16-valve gas distribution mechanism (GRM) repeats the 2110 model, and the cylinder block (BC) is a copy of the "eight" (21083). This can be verified by comparing their geometrical parameters: bore diameter and center distances.

True, the blocks are not interchangeable, since they differ in the diameter of the cylinder head screws (cylinder head). Unlike parts 21083 and 2110, BTs has additional oil channels in the main bearings for supplying oil to the lubrication nozzles. Now a little about how the 120th and 124th motors differ from each other. VAZ 21120 contains BC 2112 with a height of 194.8 mm, and 21124 - BC 11193. The height parameter of the latter is 197.1 mm (the so-called "high" block). The 124th crankshaft is longer-stroke compared to the 12th. For motor 2112, the knee has a size of 35.5 mm (stroke 71), and for 21124 - 37.8 mm (stroke 75.6). As a result, the working volume of the 124th version is 1.6 liters, versus 1.5 for the 120th.

The pistons are also different. Both have counterbores to ensure the exit of the valve disc. However, on the 120th engine, their depth is deceptive. It is designed only for the normal operation of the timing, and in the event of a toothed belt break, the “meeting” of the valves with the pistons becomes inevitable. The 124th drive is all right with this, the elimination of the incident will only require replacing the belt without disassembling the power unit.

Replacing the pistons of the 21120 motor with 124s will avoid the troubles associated with a broken belt. True, the power of the VAZ 2112 engine will be somewhat less.

Other differences

The engines also differ in the design of the "inhale". The 120th inlet consists of two aluminum parts: a manifold ("horns") and a receiver, interconnected by rubber corrugations. Unit 21124 "decorates" the intake system, made of plastic and consisting of a single piece.

The ignition system is arranged differently. VAZ 2112 is equipped with an ignition distributor module, and on 21124 individual coils are installed for each cylinder. Due to the differences in the intake and ignition systems, the valve covers also differ.

The 1.6-liter unit has some more differences from its counterpart: the pressure regulator is moved from the fuel rail to the pump, the catalyst is located directly at the cylinder head, there are 2 oxygen sensors (Euro-3) instead of one (Euro-2) for 1.5 liter. The split design of the timing case makes it easy to replace the toothed belt.

People often ask: where is the engine serial number on the VAZ 2112? Indeed, the number located under the air filter is quite difficult to detect. Possible malfunctions

  • The 2112 engine is tweaking. The fault should be sought in the distribution module, high-voltage wires, spark plugs.
  • Unstable idling (XX). In this case, the control device, crankshaft position sensors and throttle plate are checked. The last one needs to be cleaned. If the search did not give a result, most likely the DMRV failed.
  • The drive stalls on the twentieth or in motion (during gear shifting). This may be due to contamination of the throttle mechanism, its sensor (TPPS) or IAC.

Repair and maintenance of the power unit

As an example, a specific case of repair work is given. Repair of the VAZ 2112 engine was required for several indications: you have to constantly add antifreeze, the lubrication control indicator blinks, hydraulic lifters click. Lubrication system

Lubrication of the VAZ-2112 engine is carried out in a combined way. With the help of pressure, the main and connecting rod bearings, camshaft and hydraulic pushers are lubricated. Malfunctions and repair of the engine 21124

AvtoVAZ continues to develop 16 valve engines and in 2004 the VAZ 2112 engine was replaced with a 124 engine. The easiest and most standard way to increase the power of the 21124 engine is to replace the camshafts with Stolnikov 8.9 280 or Nuzhdin 8.85, put a 4-2-1 direct-flow exhaust, a receiver and a 54-56 mm damper, this will give us more than 120 hp in total, and for more efficient operation of the motor, we change the piston to a lightweight prior. This will further increase power and reduce fuel consumption. In the case when these figures are not enough, it is recommended to modify the cylinder head and install evil wide-phase shafts, which will give 150+ hp at the output.

To increase the stability of the engine and the response of the gas pedal, 4 throttles are installed.
