The car VAZ 2109 carburetor starts. Why won't the car start? Spark plugs are faulty

13.10.2019

Surely every car owner has encountered a problem when his car does not start. it or a foreign car - it does not matter. Everyone has the same symptoms. In today's article, we will look at why the VAZ 2109 does not start (including the carburetor and injector) and how to fix this problem.

Battery

The first thing you should pay attention to is the battery. Especially if the car was in the garage or in the parking lot for more than a week. The battery tends to lose its charge. Especially often this is faced by motorists in winter. In one night, the battery can lose up to 30 percent of its total charge. The solution is to charge the battery. However, there are situations when you need to go right now. There is a way out of the situation. To do this, turn on the headlights of the car for a while (1-2 minutes). In this way, we activate the electrolyte in the battery, thereby increasing the voltage level. When the electrolyte comes into action, the battery warms up and the current increases accordingly.

What to do if the injector does not start This is possible even with a charged battery. And the reason for this are the terminals on it. The presence of oxidation and plaque contributes to poor contact, as a result, the VAZ 2109 (injector 8 valves) does not start. The reasons are precisely in the white coating, which must be cleaned with sandpaper. Next, the terminals are put on in place and the car should start successfully.

Ignition

But what to do if even with a charged battery, the VAZ 2109 does not start? The problem should be sought in the ignition system. The first thing you should pay attention to is the distributor and its wires. Symptoms - the starter rotates, sometimes it "grabs", however, it does not start. And the motorist, hoping that the car “is about to start”, turns the starter for 20-30 seconds. And so on until the battery runs out again. This is absolutely impossible to do. The starter must be turned for no more than 5-7 seconds with a minute break. Otherwise, you just put the battery. It happens that the car will not start due to poor spark supply. This may occur due to a breakdown in one of the high voltage wires that go from to the candles. There are only four of them - one for each cylinder. The breakdown is indicated by the presence of sparks at the junction of the candles with the wire. It is especially visible at night. From time to time, small sparks jump around the perimeter of the wire, often blue and white. If so, the element needs to be replaced. The resource of high-voltage wires on VAZ 2109 vehicles is 40-50 thousand kilometers.

flooded distributor

This situation happens after driving a car in rainy weather or after washing the engine.

Even a small drop of water that has penetrated the ignition distributor can interfere with normal sparking - the slider is not able to generate the spark that is necessary to ignite the mixture. To prevent this, you should not drive through puddles at high speed, and when washing the engine, carefully close all ignition elements, including candle wells.

Coil

If she is alone, she can be diagnosed with a multimeter. The absence of voltage indicates that the element is not capable of delivering the current that is necessary to create a spark in the combustion chamber. If there are two coils in the car and one of them is faulty, the car will work, but one of the cylinders will triple.

Candles

Having removed the armored wires from them (do this very carefully so as not to damage the connectors), use the candle key to take the elements out.

If they have traces of plaque, are filled with gasoline or are simply dirty, they are the problem. When a large amount of fuel is supplied with a minimum volume of air, the element is not able to ignite the mixture. As a result, the VAZ 2109 (carburetor) does not start - the starter turns, there is a spark.

The electrode gaps should be checked - they should not exceed 0.8 mm. Also dry the elements and clean with a dry cloth from dirt.

What to do if there is no key?

If not, you can dry the parts in another way. To do this, the car is placed in neutral, the ignition is turned on. Then press the gas pedal to the floor and turn the starter for 5 seconds. Thus, a large amount of air will enter the combustion chamber - the candle will dry successfully. It is important to remember that during this operation, the amount of oil on the cylinder walls is reduced. Therefore, it is not worth abusing this method so that the motor does not work “dry”.

Dirty filter

Its blockage leads to the fact that the VAZ 2109 does not start. And it does not matter whether it is a carbureted engine or an injection engine. Checking the condition of the air filter is easy. Both on the carburetor and on the injection, you should remove the housing cover (the only difference is that on the first it is iron, and on the second it is plastic). Then we take the element out and look at its state. Paper filter elements should be light colored. If there are particles of dust and dirt on them, the air through them is not able to pass into the combustion chamber. From here it turns out that the VAZ 2109 carburetor does not start: the starter turns, there is a spark. In winter, periodically inspect its external condition. Such a filter, as in the photo on the right side, can no longer be used.

Yes, this will not bring harm to the motor, however, there will be frequent interruptions in work. As a result, the chamber will be filled with a mixture that is too lean - hence the lack of "traction", power, failures in acceleration and high fuel consumption. By replacing this part with a new one, you will immediately get rid of all these problems. By the way, the manufacturer recommends changing the air filter at least once every 10 thousand kilometers. If the car is operated in rural areas, where there are mainly dirt roads, this period should be divided by two. Dust and dirt are the main enemies for the filter.

Circuit breakers

VAZ 2109 cars have a rather impractical location of the fuse box - between the windshield and the engine compartment. All dirt, dust and other deposits accumulate on this block.

If the lid is not airtight, after rain, moisture can get on the elements, which is why they “short”. The most basic in our case is the fuel pump fuse. If it is burned out, the fuel is not able to pass from the gas tank into the chamber. And no "purge" will save here. In order not to fall into such a ridiculous situation, experienced drivers advise you to always carry a set of new fuses with you.

Valve clearances

On carburetor "eights" and "nines" with a 1.3 engine, there is no hydraulic compensator. Because of this, valve clearances must be set every 20 thousand kilometers. “Clamped” valves cannot provide normal fuel inlet and outlet, therefore, engine operation is disrupted - it is difficult to start it. They are set using adjusting and locknuts.

Oil

Due to thick oil, the engine is not able to start normally. This problem is typical for the winter period. Due to thick oil, compression is reduced - the motor is not able to process the mixture. In winter, thick oil flows down and when you try to start, gasoline pours onto it in the upper part of the cylinder, dissolving it and washing it off the walls.

Timing phases

What to do if the VAZ 2109 injector does not start (the starter does not turn - it clicks)? It is worth paying attention to the condition of the timing belt. Perhaps he flew off the labels and the system is not able to work out the phase.

It is also possible to break it. It is highly discouraged to allow this, especially on engines with a volume of 1.3 liters. On such motors, in the event of a break, it is simple. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor its condition and, in the presence of the slightest cracks, replace it. It can fly off due to poor tension on the roller. Checking the tension is very simple - if the element touches the plastic protective cover, it should be tightened.

Starter

If it does not turn even with a charged battery, most likely it has become unusable. To replace it you need:

  1. Remove the terminal with the block on the starter relay.
  2. Unscrew and remove the terminal of the electric drive of the traction relay.
  3. Loosen the motor protection bolts.
  • Tighten all fastening nuts alternately with uniform force. So you reduce the risk of misalignment of the starter.
  • Put the terminal on the contact bolt and install all previously dismantled pads.
  • Install the original engine protection.

And, of course, the main point when replacing this element is to first disconnect the battery terminal.

So, we found out for what reasons the VAZ 2109 does not start.

The owners of the "nine" are often faced with a situation where the VAZ 2109 does not start. Is it possible to determine the cause of the breakdown yourself and do without a service station? If you master certain skills and knowledge of the engine start system, then yes.

Lada may not start in different ways. The first case: it starts badly on a cold one. This implies a fuzzy start of the motor after a long parking of the car. It happens when the VAZ stalls on the go, that is, it does not start well when hot. In addition, the “nine” was produced both with carburetor engines and with injection engines. The differences in the search for breakdowns in these two units are significant. Let's find out how to look for the cause of failure for both options for the power unit.

Differences between breakdowns of the carburetor and injector

There are common cases of engine start failure for the injector and carburetor. But now we will consider the distinguishing features with such a malfunction as a “stalled engine”. Differences in the search for breakdowns are due to the different principle of operation of the two systems.

In the VAZ 2109, the carburetor - the motor is driven by the suction of a combustible mixture into it. This is due to the fact that a difference in pressure is formed in the intake manifold and the atmosphere. In this case, three components are enough for a normal start of the machine:

  • gasoline;
  • air;
  • sparks.

The starter rotates the crankshaft, while the resulting mixture (fuel with air) is sucked into the cylinder cavity. Next, the valves of the internal combustion engine close, a compression stroke occurs, at the end of which a spark appears on the candle and the combustible mixture is ignited. The motor starts.

And in the case of an injector, fuel injection and the quality of the resulting mixture are controlled and adjustable. The combustible mixture is injected into the cylinders with the help of nozzles (directly into the combustion chamber). Therefore, there is no need to create conditions for the absorption of air and gasoline here.

A breakdown in the injection engine can be briefly described as follows: either a spark is not formed, or access to the cylinders is closed for the combustible mixture.

In addition, the VAZ 2109 injector has many sensors, an electronic control unit and an electric fuel pump. They can also fail. Consider the procedure for searching for a breakdown separately for the carburetor and injector.

VAZ carburetor engine does not start

If this happens, you need to check:

  • availability of all technical fluids;
  • battery charge;
  • starter status;
  • fuel pump and fuel filter;
  • candles, the presence of a spark;
  • timing belt marks (timing);
  • condition of the carburetor.

If the starter does not rotate the crankshaft, you need to make sure that the battery is charged. A click is required when turning the key. To do this, all connectors on the starter must be put on. If the crankshaft rotates, look further. We determine what is not in the cylinder: a spark or a mixture. To check the spark, remove the high-voltage wire from the candle, bring it to the ground and start the car from the key.

If a spark is not supplied to the VAZ 2109 candle, we make sure that the distributor (ignition distributor) receives a “flash”. To do this, disconnect the wire from it, bring it to the metal case and start the starter. The presence of a spark indicates that the problem is in the distributor. We check its slider and clean the contact of the wires.

Provided that the distributor does not “spark”, we diagnose the ignition system. This can be done with instruments. The principle of operation of all devices is identical: display the power and working out of the switch and the Hall sensor (sensor for determining the moment of spark occurrence) by lighting up the indicator light.

The device is connected to a break in the switch circuit, the connector is removed from the switch and connected to the device connector. The other connector of the device is put on the switch. When the starter rotates, the switch bulb and the Hall sensor bulb should blink. If the switch lamp does not light up, it needs to be changed. When the sensor lamp is off, make sure that the distributor runner rotates when the starter is operating. If the starter rotates, but the slider does not, the timing belt is torn. If the slider rotates and the sensor does not light up, the sensor is broken.

In the absence of instruments, disassemble the distributor manually. The distributor drum must not touch the Hall sensor. Check the sensor for serviceability of wires and connector. All right, but no spark? Replace switch. If in this case it does not spark, the ignition coil has failed. This is a rare occurrence, but it happens.

If there is a spark on all elements, remove the air filter cover and try to start. If the car starts, then the filter is clogged and there is no air supply to the carburetor. Does not want to start - remove the filter and unscrew the hose leading from the fuel pump to the carburetor, and rotate the starter.

Still won't start? We unscrew the candles. If they are flooded, dry on fire. The motor should start 95% of the time.

How often does it happen that your beloved car (VAZ 2109, 099, 08) flatly refuses to start or stalls on the road? You should not immediately call gifted craftsmen or drag the poor fellow to the service on a rope. Good news so far. I will tell you what to do, but only if the hands grow from the right place :).

A stalled and not starting engine can have several causes. Initially, we turn the key in the ignition and listen to whether the starter turns, if there is no reason in it, but this is said and "no brainer". If the starter turns, move on. No matter how stupid it may sound, but you need to check if there is gasoline in the tank.

We turn the key and look at the control lamp for the remaining fuel in the tank. If you are sure that there is gasoline, go ahead and check for a spark. We turn out any candle, stick it into the high-voltage wire and touch the engine (to ground) ...

Here we need an assistant. We put him behind the wheel and let the starter turn the key. Is there a spark at the tip of the candle? Good. No? Badly. Faulty switching unit or its wiring. It's hard to do anything about this. Try changing the switch. You should also check the spark on the central wire coming from the coil. We check the same method with candles. Lack of spark may indicate a bad coil.

Let's check the power system. If it is winter outside, water could get into the gasoline supply system and freeze. We check: unscrew the "air", and press the button of the fuel pump several times. Gurgling? Well, gasoline enters the carburetor. No?

Either the above water somehow got into the system frozen, or, more likely, the fuel pump is faulty. Pay attention to the fine filter. It should be inspected for cracks and damage. You can also see the hoses through which gasoline flows. Have you checked everything? Is the power system okay?

Next step, candles! We unscrew the candles. All. Let's see if they have soot. A thrifty driver should always have a spare set of working, checked candles. "Spit" (black candles with soot and filled with gasoline), it is useless to clean with sandpaper and wipe. They must be calcined over a gas stove.

So the working candles were inserted, did not help? Let's move on to the ignition system. We remove the high-voltage wires from the distributor. By the way, because of the wires, the car may also not start, check them. We look at the cover of the distributor.

If there are chips inside, the contacts are scorched, change the cover. Next, remove the runner. It can also be replaced. We unscrew 2 bolts. Disconnect the wiring from the hall sensor and change the actual sensor. We collect everything in the reverse order with new parts.

The location of the high-voltage wires on the cover of the distributor is out of order. The first wire (on the cover it is marked with the number 1) comes from cylinder 1 (leftmost), then cylinder 2, cylinder 4 and cylinder 3 will go clockwise. If you mix up the wires, the car will terribly troit or not start at all.

It remains to check the timing belt. It is located on the left side, under the cover. Remove and look at the teeth of the belt. If there is not enough and the belt slipped, then it must be changed. It's just a matter of consequences. If you have a 1.3 engine, then the valves may have bent (do not even poke your head). If 1.5 then maybe nothing terrible.

Well, that's basically the whole system. Everything should start. If not, you can with a pure soul (did what you could) drag it to third-party masters. If the machine does not idle, check the solenoid valve. It is screwed into the carburetor on the right side. Remove the clamp.

Turn the key, turning on the ignition and touch the terminal several times on the valve. Are there clicks and sparks? ok, it works. Just unscrew it and blow through the jet at the end. The valve must be screwed back by hand, preferably without overtightening it.

Also, unstable idling or jerky movement can be the result of an unadjusted carburetor, in fact, as well as spat (from an over-enriched mixture) candles.

Good luck on the roads.

A fairly common question that covers not only VAZ 2109-2108 cars, but probably all VAZs in general, since problems with starting the engine are quite common with this kind of car.

Of course, the topic is hackneyed, but most likely it will not be possible to get an answer to your question why your car does not start right away. Moreover, there can be so many reasons that it will take quite a lot of time to diagnose just one. So, below are the main reasons why your car may not start.

Fuel system malfunction

  • First of all, look at the fuel gauge on the instrument panel. There are such drivers, usually beginners, who do not look at the instruments, and will not always be able to orient themselves in the event that they simply run out of fuel.
  • See if fuel is getting into the system. If the car is carbureted, pump up the fuel pump manually and make sure that gasoline is supplied to the carburetor. If it is injection, listen carefully to see if the fuel pump works when the ignition is turned on. If not, look for the cause, a faulty fuse, an open circuit, or something else that could lead to a similar outcome.
  • The power system is clogged: it often happens that debris enters the carburetor along with fuel, and even one clogged jet can disable the normal engine start.

Malfunctions in the ignition system

  • Check if there is a spark at the candles. If not, then the cause is in the ignition system. It is necessary to check the connection of all high-voltage wires to the module or distributor, especially the central high-voltage wire (for a carburetor engine model).
  • if it is she who is the cause of the disappearance of the spark and the consequence of the fact that the car has stopped starting.
  • Check the operability of the distributor - open the lid, look at the integrity of the coals in it. Also check contacts or.

Problems with the electrics or electronics of the injector

If your VAZ 2109-2108 is an injection one, then there can be much more problems for which it refused to start. There are about 5 ECM sensors alone, which can affect the normal start of the engine:

  1. DMRV - mass air flow sensor
  2. IAC - idle speed controller
  3. Throttle position sensor
  4. crankshaft position sensor
  5. Phase sensor

Also, do not lose sight of even the simplest problems, for example, with the ignition switch, starter and its retractor relay, as well as with fuses.

Does not start due to problems with the timing or piston group

If the timing belt jumped a couple of teeth, then the engine may no longer start, as the ignition has gone astray. In order to bring him back to life, it is necessary.

Clamped valves - there is also a possibility that it was for this reason that starting the engine became difficult and even impossible over time. In this case, it is necessary to produce.

Weak compression is the case when a difficult start-up manifests itself daily if the piston is already on the verge of complete decline. This is due to too much wear and tear of the parts of the piston group: rings, pistons and cylinders.
