Although I'm not sure that the traditionalists from Toyota themselves like this kind of "barking".

The current Corolla combines the tradition of a classic sedan, for which the older generation loves it, and at the same time has many features that are attractive to young people: a catchy three-quarter poster look, headlights and taillights that slightly resemble blades, aggressive “gills” in the front bumper.




Chrome is delicately applied to the finish, and this is an option. For example, in inexpensive options, there will be no shiny metallic stripes on door handles. Actually, there can be more metal in the exterior - nice chrome moldings are optionally available, decorating the doors that are somewhat empty without them on the bottom, a tail spoiler painted in body color, and a number of other details. The shark fin antenna on the roof hides a GLONASS antenna for the panic button system, although navigation is still not offered for the Corolla in Russia.

Officially, the interior of the Corolla is described as follows: “... the multi-layer architecture of the front panel, high-quality finishing materials, glossy lacquer and matt chrome accents create a harmonious premium style. With the “premium level”, the authors of this text, of course, got excited, although there are still interesting solutions. I’ll say it subjectively, of course, but I see some kind of incompletely designed “fusion” in the interior of the Corolla, where the creators have collected many different stylistic solutions, but in the end they didn’t come to any single genre, but piled everything together. The same, say, side window vents - why are they round, what does this shape have in common? And the combination of several layers of elastic and hard plastics in the dashboard trim, and coupled with stitching, looks like tuning, not the original. However, I do not pretend to be the truth - a matter of taste.




The restyled instrument panel has changed slightly, but not significantly. It is well readable, always in the field of view thanks to the steering wheel adjustable in height and reach. For me, it’s just right, but someone will rightly note that the tidy is too rustic and doesn’t fit too well with the unusual multimedia panel in the cabin.


And the multimedia panel is implemented very, very curiously! It differs from the banal and boring display of the pre-styling version flush into the dashboard in the spirit of traditional "radio tape recorders", and from the eccentric sticking out "tablets", as is now fashionable. It seems that the Corolla display is “imposed” on the dashboard by some separate, almost removable part. Its outlines in metal-like edging with two vertical rows of blue touch buttons evoke serious home hi-fi. Looks great! (By the way, for owners of good collections of good old CDs there is a bonus - a disk drive)


By the way, about the sound… The front midbasses are located in the doors, the tweeters are in the corners of the doors. The second pair of acoustics is coaxial, in the rear shelf. There are no remote tweeters, of course. Despite the fact that the audio system is completely ordinary, according to the principle “if only it was”, the sound did not cause rejection, as is the case with the sound of budget cars and cars bordering on them in price. No, it doesn't have much bandwidth or power, but the tweeters in the corners of the front doors are well oriented and seem to even partially work in the midrange, resulting in a kind of immersive feeling.



The climate panel (two-zone) has also been updated. Now it does not have the usual “knobs”, but controls the fan speed, air flow modes and temperature with keys that swing up and down. This solution requires getting used to and diverting the driver's attention to manual adjustment.


The main advantage that a person who has moved to a Corolla from a Solaris, Rio, Polo or even a modern VAZ receives is space for himself and his family. For example, in comparison with the same hit of budget sales from Hyundai, the Corolla is 22 centimeters longer, 7.5 centimeters wider, the wheelbase of the Japanese woman is 10 centimeters longer. Behind the wheel of the Corolla, a person with a height of under two meters and a mass of well over a hundred is comfortably and completely freely accommodated. There is no excess stock along the driver's seat, as, say, in the Superb or Passat, and you can't lay out a laptop on your knees while driving. But, in fact, the class is not the same, this is normal. The space ahead is solid, but no frills. Although the "luxury" in the form of electric seat adjustments would not hurt ... But its absence is traditional for the Corolla.



At the same time, with the front seat completely pushed back behind a tall and weighty driver, the second same big man fits quite comfortably. And if you need to seat three people behind, not only a high ceiling will create convenience for them, but also a practically absent floor tunnel, so that the average rider will not have to “keep their legs X”.

The rear seat is pushed back all the way. It can be seen that there is plenty of legroom for passengers. True, of the elements of additional comfort for the riders of the sofa, there is only a central armrest and a 12-volt socket for charging gadgets ...

The trunk has a net volume of 452 liters. This is not too much, budget sedans often have 10-50 liters more. But in the Corolla, space priority is given to rear seat passengers, not things, and this is probably right. Thanks to the backs of the rear sofa, which are laid out independently from each other, the cargo volume can be increased if necessary. The only remark is to the raised floor of the trunk, under which the spare tire is hidden. It is made of the thinnest flimsy hardboard, close in density to boxed corrugated cardboard. Maybe this, of course, is not too critical for bags of grubs from the supermarket, but it looks undignified.

What does Corolla offer from interesting equipment? In general, it is quite running even for rich trim levels of budget cars. Our equipment includes push-button start and keyless entry, a rain sensor, front and rear parking sensors with a camera, steering wheel adjustment in two positions, and a dual-zone climate. Four electric windows with one-touch lowering and raising (the auto function just appeared on the restyling), electric folding mirrors, an auto-dimming element in the interior mirror (not in the outside ones).

A little more interesting is the LED head light (in the Style + and Prestige versions), which automatically switches from far to near, heated steering wheel and brush parking areas on the windshield.


True, the heating of the steering wheel slightly upsets with its “zoning”: only the sectors are warmed up at “10 and 14 hours”, and the bottom and top of the “steering wheel” do not have heaters. But the stove is good! It quickly enough generates the first signs of warm air: an electric "dry hair dryer" is built in. And when it gets hot, it gives the heat to the fullest, very powerful! The Corolla has one of the best stoves I've seen in a while.

As for the climate and heat, here's what else I would like to note ... The steering wheel heating button is physical (that is, it has fixed positions pressed / released), the seat heating buttons are the same. But the button for partial heating of the windshield, for some inexplicable reason, does not have fixed positions. If the owner of the Corolla installs an alarm with a remote start and leaves the car in winter, leaving the heating of the steering wheel and seats active, they will start to heat up at the same time as the engine is started, which is very convenient. But the heating of the wiper zone will only have to be turned on manually when you have already gone down to the warm car and are ready to go ... In principle, this can probably be implemented with an additional channel, but the installation of the security system will become more complicated and more expensive.

The cost of the base Corolla does not go over the psychologically important millionth redistribution and starts from 954 thousand. But this exotic option is hardly worth considering, since it comes with a 1.3-liter engine and manual transmission. Such a frail engine in a car weighing three hundred tons can hardly be considered practical, especially when buying a car seriously and for a long time (otherwise, what's the point of the legendary Toyota reliability?) At first, the Corolla seems sluggishly vegetable. Yes, in fact, the way it is with a 122 hp engine. and a CVT ... The engine cheers up and gives traction only after 4-5 thousand revolutions, but the sport mode, the button of which is conveniently located near the gearbox selector for blind pressing, partly corrects the situation, so you quickly get used to pressing this button. You can also control the variator and manually shift the traditional handle to manual mode. In principle, it brings a certain effect on overtaking and starts, but it quickly gets boring. But in general, you still have to come to terms with the fact that with this engine in terms of dynamics you remained at the same level as with the previous Solaris, from which you planned to move to the next level of auto prestige by acquiring a Corolla.

The electric power steering feels a little smeared. There is feedback, but I would like a little more sharpness. A short side throw at speed in an attempt to avoid a small but deep pothole in the road may not be enough - the jerk is greatly smoothed out. At the same time, when driving in a straight line, the car on wide tires 205/55 R16 gives the driver a rest: it drives itself, as if on a thread.


The suspension proved to be both energy-intensive and collected. On the primer, which looks like a pimply packaging film entirely from ice hummocks the size of a fist and a half, Corolla confidently ran at 50-60 km / h, muffledly slapping the wheels and not disturbing the riders. The rear suspension is a simple torsion beam, which somewhat affects the comfort of passengers: the soft places of everyone, and not just the one on whose side it fell ...

I usually don’t say anything about brakes: frankly, I haven’t seen cars for a long time where the designers would be wrong with the performance of the vacuum cleaner, the diameter of the calipers or other elements of the system, and the braking efficiency did not correspond to the mass or dynamics of the car. Faultless, of course, are the brakes in the Corolla. But at first I had to get used to the unusual non-linearity of the pedal travel: too much of the braking force is incorporated in the first third of its travel, and the initial shift of the pedal is tight. Because of this, there is (especially at low speeds) the effect of excessive braking and systematic pecking. However, after a couple of days I adapted and stopped noticing this feature.

“Okay, we’ll get used to it,” said one wise man, looking at the first images of the 11th generation Corolla. And they really got used to it, even though at first they made caustic remarks about Japanese designers. To whom, it seems, the echo of indignant voices did fly, since they decided to take up the files again. It turned out not that it was a hundred times better, but it already looks more like a Toyota, as it is known in Europe. In any case, when viewed from the front - a narrow section of the headlights, atrophied radiator screen yes updated front bumpers. Here, in fact, is the whole facelift.

The most noticeable problem with the Corolla's appearance is the wheel arches, which are too large for 16-inch wheels. Perhaps a swift sports sedan on cast rollers is being prepared for the premiere?

In the cabin, the updated car is unmistakably identified by the new climate control unit and the information system with touch buttons - we first saw this a year ago on a new generation pickup truck. Otherwise, the changes are of a point nature and the crew is still forced to contemplate a somewhat eclectic torpedo ensemble in front of them, the fruit of a bold, but not entirely successful experiment. Even though they are used to it.

Another branded (but not family) feature of the 11th Corolla is an unexpectedly deep driving position, almost like in a real sports car. The instrument scales are right in front of your eyes and it seems that the lower chakra is sliding centimeters from the asphalt, so it won’t take long for an impressionable driver to feel like a participant WTCC Championship. These, however, do not belong to the target audience of the Corolla, but still nice.

Pleasant and soft plastic, which is lined with a dashboard visor, and the complete absence of cheap sparkles - interior"Corolla" is strict and technocratic. The blue backlighting of the instruments and buttons on the center console is no longer so cute - it may appeal to young geeks, but in the dark it is too aggressive. And the Japanese with plastic on the door cards didn’t hit at all (and the clients, respectively, hit): it is so easily soiled that you can leave a mark just by swiping your finger over it. Trying to erase the fingerprint will very likely lead to the stain growing and then there will be an occasion to stop by the car wash.

New generation information system Touch 2 connects to the internet via Bluetooth connection with a smartphone and even allows you to download applications. Twitter is also on the list, although it would be better if they added good stereo - the sound quality from the speakers can be considered sufficient for listening to talk radio stations and electronics, but nothing more.

The rear sofa is more comfortable than it seems from the outside, besides, there is simply plenty of room for legs and knees. And this is a serious advantage for corporate garage admirals.

The front seats are good with tangible lateral support and are rich in freedom of adjustment, so even very tall people can get behind the wheel comfortably. At the same time, the passenger sitting behind a tall driver will have a sufficient amount of living space - the second row is very spacious. Not for nothing that the new Corolla is so fond of taxi drivers, and no one will prop up the driver's seat with their knees to the head of a large family. Unless the mayor of Kyiv, if you suddenly have to give him a ride to work.

Our test car made in Turkey, but the build quality could not be faulted. Even gaps in the interior and body panels, doors and trunk lid close with little effort. Nothing creaks, although at the time of the test the car drove less than a thousand kilometers and this observation may not be significant yet. Nevertheless, the first impression is this: a well-assembled car that does not try to seem more expensive than it actually is, but also does not allow for serious criticism - except for the very brand of plastic. Let's start with the bad. Of the bad things in the updated "Corolla" - running gear soundproofing. Sometimes it seems that she is simply not here, although this, of course, is not so. However, in the pre-styling model, the hum from the suspension diluted the annoying sound of the engine in equal proportions, but now the engine has been wrapped up and it no longer annoys.

A 1.6-liter 122-horsepower gasoline aspirated engine is the top of the range in the engine range. In our test car, it works in tandem with a CVT. Multidrive S and I must say that the last letter in its name can mean anything, but not Sport. Acceleration starts with a second's hesitation, although this is a common weak point of continuously variable transmissions; then the engine speed is selected depending on the force of pressing the accelerator. If you press it into the floor, they will jump almost to the ceiling, the car will roar and start to accelerate. Not too intense, but without longing in the eyes. The CVT captures the driver’s mood on the fly and, if you drive at a brisk pace for at least half a kilometer, it will continue to keep the speed above 3 thousand, providing a reaction to pressing the accelerator without delay, as if you select a sport driving mode.

If we count money and liters, Corolla will allow you to keep within the city at 7.5 liters, and on the highway at 5.5 l / 100 km. God knows what indicators are at present, but it should be borne in mind that a simple and uncomplicated aspirated engine in the long term will most likely cost less than newfangled turbo engines. Especially if you drive a liter turbomonster spitting on speed limits.

And now about the good. Of the good things about the Corolla, no matter how unexpected it may sound, it is worth noting the handling, namely the good balance between smoothness, readiness for driving through pits and cornering speed. They would do something with a completely empty steering wheel, suffering from a lack of feedback, and then it would be appropriate to put the Japanese car on a par with the best representatives golf class. Corolla has sharp but predictable responses, keeps the trajectory stable even on uneven pavement and is understandable in border conditions. Go through a bunch of turns on the verge of adhesion on it and instead of compressed lips in a line, the photofixation camera will capture a stupid but sincere smile. And if it weren’t for the simple 16-inch tires (even in the top configuration), the grip reserve with asphalt would have surprised many critics who wrote down the car in Lanos. It's a paradoxical thing: most golf-class hatchbacks left our market due to unpopularity and foreign assembly, and people preferred ... the only Skoda Octavia liftback, having bought more than 25,000 of these cars last year. We decided to find out, maybe we should not focus on Octavia and better choose one of our classmates-sedans - a cheaper Cerato or an expensive, but so long-awaited new Toyota Corolla?

Corolla, having changed generation, has approached Camry as much as possible. But now there is more demand for it. Does she live up to expectations? Not in everything. We visited the driving premiere of the Toyota novelty, which will appear at Russian dealers in early March, and found out the main pros and cons of the twelfth generation Corolla.

The presentation of the prototype of the new Toyota Corolla Hatchback model took place at the New York Auto Show, and an official presentation in Japan is scheduled for June 26. And I had the opportunity to try the car a little in advance on the Shot-track (short ring - translator) in Fuji Speedway.

It would seem that the inhabitants of the Land of the Rising Sun have plenty to choose from. vehicles. However, progress here is literally closely related to living conditions, and the main preferences come down to cars that are not the largest and relatively inexpensive, and there are no “foreign cars” among them. Even without taking into account the specific Japanese flavor in the image of kei cars (especially small class), the list of the ten most popular models of “normal” dimensions also does not differ in a special scope of forms. For example, with crossovers there is a clear failure. This is evidenced by the results of sales, say, over the past five years - from 2012 to 2016. True, during this period, cars of a completely different consumer level suddenly burst into the Japanese hit parade, which could not but affect our final rating. The top 10 was made up of both young representatives of the Japanese auto industry and “hardened wolves”, behind whose shoulders a solid life experience.

Today we face a difficult choice. Even if there were only two cars in this test - a Ford Focus and a Toyota Corolla - it would not be easy for us. Bestsellers, and not only world, but also Russian: by July of this year, 683 thousand Corollas and 680 thousand Focuses had dispersed across the expanses of our vast Motherland. But our already difficult choice was unexpectedly complicated by the newcomer from Hyundai - the Elantra model. In this test, he no longer looks like a whipping boy who is stewing hardened opponents. He, on the contrary, is ready to put up a very worthy resistance to them and sometimes even win - if not a war, then a battle.

Bend your fingers. The interior - one, the bumpers - two, the optics - three... The power units were not touched at all, and the chassis was only slightly reconfigured to suit Russian conditions. The corrected plastic sidewalls may not be noticed at first glance, so the updated Corolla is easiest to recognize by the sections of daylight. Although in these new engineering market conditions, Toyota proved to competitors that its model is capable to some extent of being the embodiment of technical and operational unpretentiousness. Can the same be said for the 11th generation Corolla?

Since November 2013, there has been a revival in the showrooms of Russian Mazda dealers - the new Mazda3 accepts congratulations on its debut. A little earlier, at the beginning of summer, a new Toyota Corolla and a restyled Honda Civic appeared. Well, why not arrange a "meeting of fellow countrymen"? The configurations were high, all with automatic transmissions, Mazda and Toyota even have 1.5 and 1.6-liter engines with a capacity of 120 and 122 hp that are close in parameters, Honda has more numbers under the hood, but there is no choice. There are discrepancies in size, but within the limits allowed by the class, besides, the Mazda3 and Corolla have the same wheelbase. And these versions are close in cost - almost a million! And what is no less important - all on winter friction tires. True, for some reason, instead of the prescribed size 205/55 R16, the test Corolla had 215/60 R16 tires, which cannot but introduce errors into the estimates. The other two have tire sizes as prescribed.

Off-road, I, however, found only Italian, - like our road to the dacha with broken asphalt and in some places a primer overgrown with grass. Riding here, in the vicinity of Wairano, is a pleasure: around the field, you smell of manure, you immediately imagine a farmer who worked on harvesting rice, and on weekends waving on the Corolla to Milan for a walk.

The chassis easily swallows bumps, getting into deep pits you don’t feel blows from below, driving even on a broken road can be comfortable.

The characteristics of the dampers, accelerator, ABS and steering have several steps from muted in "Eco" mode to active in "Sport Plus", which can also be individually calibrated.

At first glance at the new Corolla, you fear for its ground clearance. From the floor to the bumper, I measured 195 mm, and as you can see in the photo, even with a large slope, the Corolla does not rest against the ground with the bumper and can drive through high waves. The front overhang has become 2 cm shorter.

For Russia, the new Toyota Corolla will receive a ground clearance increased by 50 mm, as Toyota engineers assured me. Let's hope that in this she will not disappoint summer residents, but she should still gain new sympathy for dynamic young entrepreneurs. At the tests in Vairano, Corolla introduced two hybrid units: 1.8 liters (122 hp) and 2 liters (180 hp), electric 80 kW and 202 Nm of torque are included in the total power. To my questions about the gearbox, whether it is a variator, Toyota engineers answered that there is no longer a belt in this design.

The two-liter hybrid unit produces a torque of 392 Nm. In the fourth generation of hybrid drive, energy for the 80-kilowatt electric motor is not only recuperated imperceptibly during braking and coasting, but is also extracted from the excess power of the internal combustion engine, stored in a lithium-ion battery located under the rear seat. This behavior is provided along with McPherson struts at the front and a new multi-link rear optional adaptive damping (Adaptive Variable Suspension - AVS). Without excessively stiffening, the suspension elements effectively reduce body roll.

It is clear that having decided voluntarily to protect the citizens from the car, Toyota is looking to the near future. How close it is to us is a moot point, we do not trust hybrids and appreciate the ground clearance in cars. Probably, having taken a step forward for the European buyer, Toyota understands that there is no need to rush so much in Russia. Our buyer will gladly give up many newfangled options for an affordable price and the opportunity to have a reliable universal car.
