The new family of small BMW crossovers was initially hostile to many fans of the brand: the motorcycle, developed together with Aprilia, received a single-cylinder Rotax engine and a chain drive, unconventional for the Bavarian school. Despite this, he conquered buyers in many countries and brought the brand many new fans.

STORY

In 1993, BMW introduced the all-new F650, co-developed with Aprilia. Instead of the GS index, the light tourenduro got its own name - Funduro. The road version, which differed in the diameter of the front rim (17 vs. 19 inches), was called the Strada. The 650cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine developed with Rotax had two Mikuni carburetors and two spark plugs in the head. Despite the chain drive that replaced the traditional cardan, and one “pot” instead of the well-proven boxer, the car was a success among both experienced motorcyclists and motorcyclists, and among beginner riders, becoming an excellent desk for them. Production of the Funduro and Strada ceased in 2001, and a year earlier, BMW showed the public a new generation of 650s, called the F650GS.

The updated “goose” received a new frame and an injection power system, and the gas tank “moved” from its usual place under the saddle, significantly lowering the center of gravity of the car. The design has changed a lot: the corners and edges were replaced by rounded shapes, and the front fender, mounted on a fork, was supplemented by a second one, installed directly under the headlight, like its older brother. At the same time, ABS was installed on the car, albeit optionally.

The road version of the 650 received the CS (city / street) index and differed from the goose in its extravagant design, cast wheels and a cantilever swingarm, and a belt took the place of the chain drive. The motorcycle did not repeat the success of the GS and was discontinued in 2006.

The 650 GS was also produced in the Dakar version, which featured increased suspension travel, a 21-inch front wheel and paint job, as well as rigid rider hand guards and a taller windshield. In 2003, the 650s lineup was refreshed, and on the front shock absorbers, the attachment point of the front wheel axle was changed (due to complaints about its insufficient strength).

In 2007, the F650GS replaced the completely updated G650X family (G650X Challenge enduro, G650X Country roadster and G650X Moto motard), and since 2008, when the production of old "geese" was discontinued, the F650GS and F800GS.

2010 was the last year for the G650X; the “goose” of the 2000 model, which received the name G650GS, actually returned to the conveyor, and with it a new design and “casting” instead of the usual knitting needles. Switchable ABS was also included in the equipment. In 2011, sales of the more off-road G650GS Sertao began, featuring paintwork and spoked wheels.

2003. FOR WHAT?

The BMW 650GS is a versatile car, suitable for both commuting and produbas, the geography of which is determined only by the desire of the owner. In the city, a narrow and squat motorcycle feels like a fish in water: excellent Brembov brakes and considerable suspension travel contribute to active driving, including curbs, and it is not for nothing that this car is in the service of the metropolitan traffic police.

Long-distance trips are facilitated by a comfortable fit and a 20-liter (in versions with ABS - 17-liter) tank, which, combined with a very modest consumption, makes it possible to bludgeon more than 300 kilometers without stopping, and good suspension and spoked wheels will help you ignore on the quality of asphalt or lack of it. But for heavy off-road, the Dakar version is more suitable: a 21-inch front wheel and large suspension travels will help not only to go far from civilization, but also to return back. Only the vibrations transmitted to the seat and steering wheel can overshadow the long-range, although they are small in comparison with single-cylinder competitors.

Over the years of production, all models of the 650 have been in constant demand, so there are a lot of offers on the market for any wallet. Prices for F 650 Funduro and Strada 1993-2001 range from 120 to 220 thousand rubles, depending on condition and age. For a single-cylinder GS 650, they will ask from 170 to 270 thousand rubles, and the cost of the updated G650GS can reach up to 350 thousand, while buying a new one will cost 360-400 thousand rubles. The G650X family has not received wide distribution in our country, there are few offers on the secondary market, on average, the price difference is 250-350 thousand rubles.

WHERE TO LOOK?

CHOICE

The motorcycle has no serious sores, except, perhaps, for the weakness of the front wheel axle. Under high loads, cracks appear on the lower part of the feathers, and sometimes the axis is completely pulled out of the feathers. Since the end of 2003, all 650s have been equipped with fork cups with a reinforced axle mount.

The pump on the "goose", despite its reliability, begins to flow over time, and its impeller wears out. An antifreeze leak from under the cover on the left is a clear sign of the death of the seals, and the condition of the impeller can only be truly checked when the pump is removed; it will drive antifreeze through the system even with half-broken blades, and at the very least the motor will still be cooled. At the same time, it is worth paying attention to the condition of the plastic pump drive gears: with high mileage, they tend to wear out. Repairing a water pump will not require special skills and costs: a repair kit consisting of a pair of oil seals and an impeller is inexpensive, and assembly and disassembly of the pump will be possible even for a novice mechanic.

The steering column bearings cannot be called the “goose” weak point, but if the nut on the steering column is not tightened in a timely manner, the clips still break. Checking their condition is not difficult: putting the motorcycle on the center stand and hanging the front wheel, grab the front shock absorbers and shake them back and forth; if there is a backlash, you should think about replacing the bearings, since for the "non-original" they ask about 1200 rubles. The condition of the needle bearings of the pendulum is checked in approximately the same way - we hang out the rear wheel and shake the pendulum, the presence of play is a clear sign of the death of the bearings.

TUNING

On a standard “goose”, first of all, you should replace your native windshield with a higher one, since there are plenty to choose from: BMW and aftermarket manufacturers offer several models of different heights, shapes and darkness; the spread of prices is also noticeable: glass from the catalog of the original tuning will cost about 9 thousand rubles, "non-original" - from 2 to 7 thousand rubles; the situation is almost the same with hand protection: "original" from 15 to 18 thousand rubles, depending on the model, aftermarket - 2.5-3 thousand rubles. Arcs will help protect the motor on the sides in case of falls, for which they will ask from 5 to 11 thousand rubles, and from below - a metal pallet (10 thousand rubles). In the city, a central wardrobe trunk is useful (from 6 to 17 thousand rubles, depending on the volume and manufacturer). A typical representative of the class has a maximum speed of about 161 km / h, which allows you to drive an unlimited period of time on a freeway, observing the accepted speed limit.

The bike is light enough for everyday commuting and not too bulky to make parking difficult. Accelerates well, makes it easy to avoid possible collisions and unpleasant situations. It has an appropriate braking system and control system as opposed to speed. The main thing is to use them correctly.

500cc models from Buell, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha are available in the aftermarket. Royal Enfield (made in India - owned by the UK) still offers new 350cc and 500cc street bikes. The main European manufacturers have not produced entry-level models of this volume for a long time.

The discontinued Kawasaki Vulcan 500 LTD is a typical mid-range cruiser. It has the same basic 498cc DOHC inline-twin engine as Kawasaki's 500cc sportbike. Front and rear disc brakes control three-beam cast aluminum wheels with tubeless tires. The volume of the fuel tank is 15 liters. Seat height is 79 cm. The Suzuki GS500E was one of the best equipped motorcycles in its class and therefore is quite expensive in the secondary market.

The Yamaha Virago 535 cruiser, discontinued in 2001, looks more radical than the Kawasaki Vulcan 500. Powered by a 535cc V-twin engine. see. The fuel-air mixture is supplied by two 34 mm carburetors. The power produced is sent to the rear wheel via a five-speed gearbox and cardan drive, the only one in the 500cc class, which is a big plus. The engine is mounted on a spinal frame. The question is, can these powerful units be used as a first bike? And if so, in what environment and under what conditions? In terms of aviation, this is how to immediately sit on a military fighter. As practice shows, accidents with beginners on such bikes occur due to loss of control no further than 10 km from the dealership, from where the motorcycle was just brought out by its happy owner. Not encouraging statistics at all. These are not cars for teenagers or insecure riders. The power and speed of such motorcycles clearly exceed the capabilities of self-control and the minimum accumulated experience of beginners. If you are not over forty and you love and protect yourself - start learning on something easier to manage, lighter in weight and with more modest power.

Motorcycles with an engine capacity of 600-650 cc. cm usually used by overweight riders, bikers with off-road experience, or riders who practice constant movement together. They are heavy and at low speeds require skill in maneuvering. May be useful in low traction conditions (on gravel or mud surfaces). Their cruising speed is high, so they are ideal for long journeys. Since they cost more in both the primary and secondary markets than the motorcycles discussed above, they have more "chips" and additional accessories. Even more powerful motorcycles (750 cc and above) are even less suitable for beginners. They are usually ridden either by former motorsport athletes or riders with a very solid driving experience on bikes of different capacities.

Honda Shadow VLX 600cc cm is positioned by the company as a medium-weight cruiser. In this group, in terms of engine size, this is the smallest bike in terms of dimensions. There is a standard model and a deluxe version. The latter has a chrome-plated body and cylinder heads, the rest of the parts are painted in two colors. Yamaha V-Star 650 is available in two variants. There's the more aggressive-looking V-Star Custom and the retro-styled V-Star Classic. Both serve their purpose perfectly. Motorcycles are large in the middleweight class. Equipped with a 649cc SOHC air-cooled V-twin inline-twin engine and a five-speed transmission. The wheelbase length is 163 cm. Classic looks like a heavy class motorcycle. The chrome headlight is bulkier, the seat is thicker, and the windshield is larger than the Custom. The front fork is completely covered by chrome surfaces, and the spoked front wheel is thicker and smaller in diameter. Seat height is 71 cm. Dry weight is 225 kg, which is overkill for a 650cc engine, especially if the rider is not too confident.

The Custom looks like the most attractive mid-weight cruiser out there. Without process fluids, it weighs 209 kg, so it also belongs to the “heavy” six hundred and fifty. The wing of the motorcycle is made in the form of a semicircle in front, and shortened in the back. The spoked front wheel is larger in diameter, smaller in width, and is held by a conventional fork. The Suzuki Savage 650, now out of production, is an unusual mid-sized cruiser. It has a 652cc air-cooled single-cylinder SOHC engine rather than a two-cylinder one. This miracle of technology weighs only 159 kg without process fluids. The wheelbase is 148 cm long. This is a full-fledged 650 cc motorcycle in the size, weight and money as for a 500 cc. The default kit comes with a low backrest and handles for the passenger, as well as a short rear fender. These are the most commonly purchased accessories for motorcycles. The Suzuki Savage 650 is one of the best aftermarket purchases.

The Suzuki Savage 650 replaced the Boulevard S40 in the Suzuki lineup. The S40 (forty in this case is the engine size in cubic inches) is a cruiser with a single-cylinder 652-cc engine. Deliberately increasing the braking force to compress the front suspension before cornering results in a smaller fork axle angle and therefore faster steering. Alternatively, the rider can choose to use less aggressive braking to keep the motorcycle in position for smooth, steady corner entry. Versys leaves the choice to the rider, so even the same turn can be completed in different ways.
  • Both the front fork and the rear shock combine long travel with stiff springs. The standard long-travel off-road suspension allows the bike to fly over bumps and potholes, but we felt it was too soft for the riding style we wanted to offer. Similarly, when using the "sport" type suspension, excellent road holding is achieved, but the best performance is achieved on (relatively) flat tracks. The combination of long travel and stiffer springs makes it possible to use the best off-road and sport bike suspensions, providing excellent road holding for various street riding situations and excellent response, allowing for aggressive sports riding.

Compact parallel twin motor for high torque at low to medium speeds

When setting up the 649 cc Parallel Twin, our engineers' main concern was to define a throttle response that would balance the feeling of power and the "fiery" nature of the bike. In order to optimize performance for everyday driving (usually around 80-120 km/h), we have been able to maximize torque at low and medium revs. When opening the throttle, the driver immediately notices that the engineers have managed to create a powerful engine that runs exceptionally smoothly, providing a high level of controllability even with slight throttle adjustments and creating a surge of acceleration at low revs.

Streamlined agile chassis

The key to the streamlined chassis of the Versys was a compact parallel twin engine, allowing the use of a narrow, lightweight frame. Along with the front seat and under-engine muffler, this frame-engine combination provides a high degree of mass centralization, which contributes to a highly manoeuvrable design. Much attention has been paid to the chassis settings for fast and adequate response, which allows the rider to unleash the potential of the motorcycle.
