Land Rover Discovery 3 appeared in 2004. The style of the car has not changed much compared to the previous version, although many elements have been finalized. The frame is integrated into the body of the Discovery 3. The suspension of the car is independent, more expensive configurations were equipped with air suspension. In 2008, this English car was restyled, albeit with minimal changes. In 2009, the next (fourth) version of Discovery was released.

The car was equipped with 4.0 and 4.4-liter V6 and V8 petrol engines (218 and 295 forces) and a 2.7-liter turbodiesel "V-shaped" (190 forces). In Russia, cars with 4.4 (448PN) gasoline and 2.7 (276DT) turbodiesel engines were sold.

Specifications of Land Rover Discovery III engines

As for the diesel engine, for such an automobile mass it is rather weak. But, oddly enough, the average consumption of diesel fuel is 10-12 liters per hundred. Diesel engine Discovery 3 is very capricious.

The main problems of a diesel engine are associated with the injection system and the turbine. The dual-mass flywheel, to its credit, lasts longer than other cars with the same engine and clutch. The car is also equipped with a particulate filter. If you operate Discovery 3 mainly in the city, then you are guaranteed problems. Soot clogs the USR valve, there have even been cases of crankshaft failure due to this.

Diesel glow plugs do not want to unscrew normally. Replacing the timing belt (of which this car has two) is a very expensive task due to the complexity of the work - the second belt that drives the fuel pump is located at the rear of the engine near the gearbox.

Against this background, gasoline internal combustion engines (by the way, from Ford) look more attractive. Motors are very fond of gasoline - a 4.4-liter in the city will not eat less than 20 liters per hundred.

Like all Land Rover cars, Discovery 3 has a proprietary all-wheel drive system with a locking rear differential. The use of a special Terrain Response system easily allows you to overcome some off-road conditions, into which a relatively small clearance will allow you to climb.

Discovery 3 was equipped with two gearboxes - 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic.

In crash tests, the car received four stars from EuroNcap.

As you know, all Land Rover cars are not very reliable. But, it is worth saying that the third Discovery is more reliable than the previous model.

As for the suspension, in practice, ball bearings and silent blocks of the front levers quickly fail. Pneumatic cushions and a compressor in “fancy” configurations fail closer to 200 thousand kilometers. Their replacement requires simply fantastic costs. Wiring Discovery 3 is also capricious - its "glitches" will be reflected on the car screen with multiple errors.

When buying Discovery 3, it is worth checking the steering rack, which likes to flow and knock. The tie rods are also considered a weak point of this model.

Complaints about gearbox leaks were noted, occasionally there were damage to the cardan support, differential and the cardan itself.

Somewhere I heard this saying: "If your Land Rover does not leak, then you did not buy a Land Rover."

Violation of the scheduled maintenance periods or the use of non-recommended types of technical fluids quickly wear out the transfer case bearings.

Another common problem is a cracked sunroof. Moreover, it is not possible to find a whole second-hand hatch.

Discovery III is a very complex car that requires repair only in specialized services. And an expensive repair. For example, for vehicles equipped with air suspension, after replacing the steering rods, the wheel alignment procedure can only be performed on a special computer.

The body of this car is not prone to corrosion, which cannot be said about its frame. It is worth checking its condition before buying.

In general, a large, spacious car inside, with good all-wheel drive and original design. The car is richly equipped and has increased comfort. But, all work on its maintenance and repair (including spare parts) is very expensive and requires specialized equipment.

A selection of reviews, video review and test drives Land Rover Discovery 3:

Crash test Land Rover Discovery III:

The main difference between the “third” Disco is the abundance of electronics: what is one Terrain Response system worth, which allows using the joystick to select one of the five complex operating modes of the engine, suspension, transmission and brakes. But it is electronics that is the main cause of trouble!

At first, the owners of Disco III were pestered by “raw software” - anything could be buggy, and new versions of firmware had to be “filled in” almost more often than oil in the engine. The programs were more or less debugged, but the Discovery “local network” still periodically “hangs”, although in most cases the proven procedure saves - turning off the power and rebooting.

With age, headaches and communication with electricians are added by a chronic “contact disease” - the wiring itself rots inside the insulation (the cost of harnesses, by the way, is up to 2000 euros), the connectors “turn green”. And all right, if because of this only the sound signal was deaf or the turn signals, instrument lighting and door lock actuators spontaneously came to life. No - the first and main victim is the same Terrain Response system. For example, a seemingly trifling loss of communication with the ABS sensor can “cut down” the speedometer, light up a full “iconostasis” of warning lights on the instrument panel and lower the air suspension to the middle position!

90% of all Disco IIIs are equipped with pneumatic elements instead of springs, and they can throw a lot of problems. If the machine is flattened, prepare 1250 euros to replace the piston compressor. By the way, on the road, do not forget that it is located at the left rear wheel and is very vulnerable (it makes sense to put optional protection), and at the tire fitting, warn that the compressor casing is not mistaken for a jacking platform - in this case, the inevitable replacement of the broken aluminum mounting bracket will cost 300 euros.

If the Disco suddenly fell on one side, the reason lies in one of the four wheel suspension position sensors (100 euros each) or in the leakage of air springs (500 euros), which are covered from dirt with metal casings: they are rarely wiped through, as before, and performance more often they are lost due to age-related microcracks in the rubber shell after five to six years of service or 100-130 thousand kilometers. With the same mileage, it’s time to change the shock absorbers of a conventional spring suspension (250 euros each for the front and 350 euros for the rear), and wheel bearings can be retired much earlier (the front ones together with the knuckles cost 200 euros, and the rear ones separately - 80 Euro).

On cars older than 2008, the bulkhead of the front suspension rumbling on bumps before 40 thousand kilometers is a common thing. Reinforced ball bearings (50 euros), silent blocks of levers (12-15 euros each) and steering tips can withstand at least 50-60 thousand kilometers and are changed separately.

Often the rack and pinion steering mechanism gives a reason to visit the service. A small backlash after 60,000 kilometers is best eliminated immediately by adjustment - a new "rail" instead of a broken one will cost 1,000 euros. A knock in the cardan joint of the steering shaft does not require urgent intervention, but if you get tired of it, you will have to change the shaft (150 euros).

Do not be surprised, but the failure of the locking of the optional E-Diff rear differential is usually reported by a warning about a malfunction of an out-of-adjustable and “shut down” air suspension. The culprit is a poorly protected from dirt and “sour” electric motor of the blocking drive, and Discovery who has seen off-road and did not know problems with it is a rare phenomenon. Cleaning revives the motors for a short time, but they are replaced under warranty (at their own expense - 900 euros for a new one and 550 euros for a factory restored one). And keep in mind that the same symptoms appear with a "dead" transfer case control unit. It is located in the engine compartment behind the battery and is afraid of water - you need to wash the engine very carefully. By the way, the electric drive is also in charge of switching between the lower and upper rows of the transfer case, but it is located more successfully and is much more tolerant of mud baths.

The steering wheel trim after 50,000 kilometers begins to rub, leaving microscopic pieces of dyed leather on the hands. The seat trim is of high quality, but their skids can become loose over time, and passenger presence sensors can fail.

And the transfer case itself, and the gearboxes, and the rare six-speed ZF “mechanics” available on diesel versions, fail infrequently. Automatic "six-speed" ZF 6HP26 usually requires control of shaft seals and oil pump seals after 120-150 thousand kilometers, but a significant part of its resource can be left off the road - frequent slippage leads to rapid wear of the torque converter and twitching on the go. The bulkhead costs 2,500 euros, but do not rush into repairs if, after an off-road extreme on asphalt, the adaptive “automatic” starts to get confused in gears and switch jerkily, it is usually enough to reset the settings of the box control unit.

In our market, three out of four Discoveries are equipped with a 2.7-liter V6 turbodiesel, which was jointly developed by Ford, Land Rover, Jaguar and PSA Peugeot Citroen. The common rail power system uses Siemens injectors (500 euros each) with piezoelectric elements instead of solenoids - fuel from untested gas stations is categorically contraindicated for this motor. By the way, not only the engine loves high-quality diesel fuel - the first, often after 40-50 thousand kilometers, the standard Webasto autonomous heater, which is not distinguished by reliability, usually starts to act up (repair will cost at least 500 euros). The beginning of trouble is hard not to notice - during unsuccessful attempts to start from under the bottom in the area of \u200b\u200bthe left front wheel, smoke is thicker than usual.

Motors Land Rover Discovery older than 2007, the failures of the exhaust gas recirculation valve clogged with soot (300 euros) are haunted - they lose power and start poorly. And Discovery with turbodiesels modified to Euro-4 economy standards were recalled to replace the high-pressure fuel pump (replacement at their own expense - 1,500 euros). The high-pressure fuel pump stands in the collapse of the block and, when the front bearing is destroyed, it irrigates everything around with diesel fuel - a column of smoke from under the hood of the Discovery that suddenly lost power left an indelible impression on many owners. If you are going to buy a car manufactured before 2009, do not be too lazy to ask the dealer if the pump has changed - the modified one does not present such surprises.

After the trick with the fuel pump, increased exhaust smoke and oil drips on the turbocharger and intercooler pipes will seem like childish pranks. The turbine is naughty infrequently, but it’s not easy to crawl up to its “snail”, hidden in the bowels of the engine compartment - many parts will need to be dismantled, for which they will ask for 500 euros in the service. If the case is not started, it will cost to replace the cartridge (rotor with bearings) for 500 euros, otherwise you will have to buy the entire unit for 2600 euros. Let's warn those who like to drive "in tension" - this is fraught with "souring" of the axes of the movable blades in the "low-speed" position.

And do not forget to check the coolant level - its noticeable decrease indicates that the leaky heat exchanger of the recirculation system literally expels antifreeze into the pipe.

Bi-xenon headlight switching shutters periodically “stick” and do not bounce back when switching from high beam to low beam. Installed behind large slots in the radiator grille, sound signals are not able to withstand a water shower for a long time

Otherwise diesel Land Rover Discovery with a low (17.3:1) compression ratio, it is durable - at least half a million kilometers are provided to it. "On the road" do not forget to change the timing belt after 120,000 kilometers, and by the end of the journey, prepare 4,500 euros for the cylinder block assembly - it is officially non-repairable.

The aluminum cylinder block of the "Jaguar" gasoline "eight" is twice as expensive, but in the timing drive there is an "eternal" chain. Serious problems with this engine are rare, and from the "little things" - oil seals and gaskets that flow after 100-120 thousand kilometers, infrequent failures of fuel pumps (150 euros), ignition coils (60 euros each), injectors (250 euros each) and throttle servo dampers (350 euros). The second gasoline engine - a Ford V6 with a volume of 4.0 liters - was installed only on cars for America and Australia, but it almost never occurs in our country, but if something happens, mechanics are familiar with it from Ford Ranger and Explorer cars.

And finally - about the body, which was a real disaster for the cars of the first generations due to electrochemical corrosion at the junctions of aluminum and steel parts. At the “third” Disco, only the hood and wings of the fifth door are made of winged metal. The rest (with the exception of the magnesium alloy front cross member) is made of galvanized steel, which successfully resists rust.

In a word, Land Rover is not a trouble-free Land Cruiser for you. But in terms of the number and “severity” of problems, the Discovery III is no worse than the elderly Volkswagen Touareg. After all, Disco has indeed become in many ways more successful than its predecessors, and the vagaries of electrics are now a common place. By the way, they did not bypass the fourth-generation Discovery, which managed to “mark” itself with an abundance of small glitches.

Of course, the Briton requires a competent attitude and branded service. But you can take it from your hands - especially since it is profitable: Discovery loses 14-15% of the original price per year on average and at the age of three to five years it costs from 900 thousand to one and a half million rubles. But we would recommend giving preference to cars younger than three years old - those that still have a factory warranty.

I didn’t particularly intend to write a review, because it’s already clear in advance what will be written in the comments. Who is at a loss, I will prompt:

1. If LR goes somewhere, then he goes to the service.

2. LR owners never say hello during the day, because in the morning they have already seen each other in the service.

Well, nevertheless, something turned out to be free time, yet I will write. Ironically, but in gratitude to the car.

Acquisition history. Funny. All my life, when I could afford not to buy VAZ, GAZ, UAZ and other TAZ products for personal use, I went to Volvo. Starting with a childhood dream, the 1983 760GLE, through the 460, S70, S80, to the wonderful XC70. And then I should have stopped, but the new XC70 came out and ... And despite all the discounts, pulls, I still got into the queue for 4 months for this car. While waiting, thoughts began to flow from "you need to buy a base + premium package" this will be the most liquid when selling and the least sensitive when losing money, to "after all, you buy a car that you want and a new one, why deprive yourself of what you want" . The price accordingly began to float from 1.500.000 to 2.100.000 and somewhere so reasonable to stop around 1.800.000. Then I began to think that it's not too much money for a station wagon, although it is practically already a business in the latest version. There was much to do, and I began to consider what else is generally offered for that kind of money.

And then I thought that with my passion for road trips, why not buy an SUV. According to the principle "useful in the economy." LRD3, Touareg, LC Prado, Pajero 4 fell into the price fork. I went to study the issue. It turned out to be the easiest to deal with the Pajero. It was enough just to get into the diesel version and take a test drive. Yes, yes, I understand that these are cheap show-offs, that uncles with a height of 215 cm ride quietly in it, but with my 180 by 95 I could not sit comfortably in it. Crowded. Then I actually pressed the gas and realized that I already had a diesel minibus for work, I had enough to listen to diesel there too. Slow acceleration and harsh suspension, and we shake hands with the manager, realizing that the marriage of convenience will not take place. With Prado, of course, it turned out to be more difficult. Damn Toyota reliability itched in my head all the time while inspecting the car. Pimply rear lights, again the absence of pneuma, xenon, a poor interior, a tape recorder from the century before last and a complete lack of acoustics + to the eternal Japanese "2 pokers stick out of the floor and generally want to show off - you go to the Lexus", everything was visible, but damned reliability and itched "yes, and figs with him maybe." As a result, it overwhelmed when we calculated the CASCO insurance. I didn’t want to pay for a satellite, for servicing a satellite, for CASCO, in total, about 270-300 thousand in the first year. Moreover, the neighbor’s experience with the Prado said that the satellite in good faith would not know where your car ended up leaving the store. But the insurance company, having eaten 300,000 for two with the owners of the satellite, will conscientiously reduce the cost of paying interest by 18 for "depreciation in the first year" and it turns out that you will actually return a million to your hands. Here it is necessary to make a digression and say that I do not accept claims about "just think, the salon is not rich, the music is garbage, but how it pulls through the sand and mud." I drive on roads, sometimes without roads. But not for the Ladoga trophy. And while I drive INSIDE the car, I want to be comfortable inside, and not think about where this UAZ can drive. This is my personal wish for cars. Let's go further. Tuareg seduced by his interior, which is much better than any of the four. But on the other hand, he did not seduce at all with not the best reliability, which I constantly observe when driving my VW bus for MOT, and completely shameless "packages" of options that caught up with the Tuareg price to 2.150.000 easily and naturally. While the price of LRD3 and Prado at 1.750 was already taken as a base. 000 rub. Well, do not forget that the XC70NEW got into the same money. This is all in comparable configurations, for example, the Tuareg was taken with leather and pneumo and xenon. In D3, this whole thing was immediately in the HSE.

Total cheerfully climbed into LRD3. Compared with the XC70 found the following pluses.

  1. For so much money SO much car.
  2. Honest SUV.
  3. Quite comfortable inside.
  4. And how comfortable on the go with his pneumo.
  5. For regular great music.
  6. No one has seen the light better.
  7. The exterior is a controversial thing, but I like the chopped design. I read somewhere that the pseudo-modesty of the interior and exterior is due to the fact that "the military style is flawlessly maintained." I liked the idea.
  8. From this "refrigerator" with a diesel engine with a gross weight of 2800 kg + the driver does not expect such feats on acceleration as he does. It is, of course, RRS with TDV8 much faster, man, but I don't need it that fast. But taxes are from a completely different opera :)

As a result, he took the money for the XC70, took it to the LRD3. Did not wait long, 2 weeks, received, climbed, began to ride. Naezdil about 400km and here it is. The famous quality made itself felt. Let's go antifreeze. And it was then that everything became clear to me about these sayings, about what does the car have to do with it, and what does everything else have to do with it. Excellent service turned a penny problem into a two-month marathon. Each time returning the car to the service after 50 km of run with a diagnosis of "leaving again", I felt not just not needed by this wonderful place where I bought it. But just an enemy. The service conscientiously washed the car, topped up the antifreeze from the jar and gave it back. Doing nothing. Just stunned by this approach to the client. As a result, I was already ready to return the car to the seller, but I ventured to call on competitors. There, surprisingly, they did not make a fool out of me and carefully examined everything. 40 minutes and the diagnosis is made. The defective valve was replaced. Here are those car. Or maybe not a car? Or maybe not a factory marriage? Indeed, according to the second service, they still climbed into the car. I already had suspicions later that while I was transferring money to the salon by bank transfer, she was simply used as a "donor" for some kind of paid repair. I can’t fully confirm, but some internal investigation allows this to be allowed.

After the repair issue was closed, summer came, it was time for my travels. What can I say. 5 times wound with St. Petersburg for Pskov, 1 time to Moscow. This is from far away. It makes no sense to mention sorties of 200 km in one direction. There were no problems or questions. The car is almost perfect for long distance runs. Pneuma allows you not to beat off the fifth point, the car is very stable on the road, it performs permutations when overtaking very correctly, at the level of a car. Well done SPORT mode in the automatic transmission. There is a manual gear shift, but it makes no sense to use it on asphalt. SPORT and went to overtake - there are simply no questions. I went back and forth to Moscow in a day - not a back hurt, nothing like that. Just wanted to sleep badly :)

I had a chance to ride off-road and not very problematic, but still. No questions, despite the 3 tons of mass, turn off DSC, choose a program and go. It is only necessary to take into account the possibilities of rubber. But by the way, you put chains on regular summer tires - rushing is better than on MT.

Its diesel is one of the best I've ever seen. BMW still has the same excellent diesel. And I haven't seen any of these yet. Wonderful motor.

As a result, the car is very like. Service is not very good :)

Questions about the car. In the process of operation came to the following conclusion. The car looks like a fourth generation fighter. Those. everything seems to be the same as on the IL-2 during the war, the handles, the steering wheel, but go ahead and put the pilot during the war in the current SU. He won't fly. It's about the same here. The Talmud on operation needs to be actually read. Where about off-road, read more than once. Better yet, take an Experience ticket and learn how to drive this tank from instructors. Because not skillfully, you can plant it easily and naturally on MT tires, and then stand and open your mouth like an instructor kneading on a regular M + S.

Here is a list of known "diseases" of an SUV, according to my communication with colleagues and at the service:

1. Sudden electronic failures treated by restarting the engine. Haven't come across it personally. The two friends I know also did not come across. The service has an opinion that since 2005, the refinement of electronics has eventually led to the fact that the number of failures has become insignificant. The very first models suffered from this and the truth. However, for example, such things often happened to people who drove over 100 km / h in winter, I personally found this out. At the same time, people did not pour anti-gels into diesel fuel. Presumably, as a result, in the cold at speed, the car simply lacks fuel, which the pump is unable to pump when it thickens in the highways. Do not forget that EURO4 requires many times more pressure. And, therefore, the fuel must match! Freelander 2 in such cases, by the way, limits the power of the car and writes it on the display. Well, here is an older car, it looks like it pulls as much as it can, then a Christmas tree on the panel and we are cut down. It’s not the first day I’ve been married to a diesel engine, I know in which country I live, I definitely pour the additive in the off-season and in winter. At -20 I drove 100 km / h - I did not observe any problems.

2. Allegedly unreliable ball joints and knocks in the steering. Having traveled with a friend, I roughly understood why this was. Well, of course, if the car is heavy, equipped with air suspension, then you can cut through the same 120 in any pits and have fun. To think that three tons, thumping through the pits, will break any ball, well, why. Soft in the cabin :)

3. Incorrect off-road behavior. Some call him an SUV. Here the humor is most likely that when choosing an off-road program, people stupidly turn “winter means snow”, while the programs are set up for this rather conditionally, for example: the sand program is set to drive on DRY sand, but they put me in jail disco on this program when driving along the lake. Then they put on the program "dirt" and ala ... a wonderful transformation. So you need to think with your head, if you really don’t want to read the manual, the soil properties for each program are described there. A friend planted him, for example, by putting the program, but not turning off DSC. Then he tried to understand why he presses the gas to the floor, but the car does not go :)

4. Problem with injection pump. There are a number of failed high-pressure fuel pumps of a new Euro4 model. LR changes them for a promotion, they also replaced me, although mine was in order. It is difficult to say what is connected with, most likely a poor-quality pump in fact. Pleases. that they don't get rid of the problem. Call and change.

For the rest, of course, anything can break, it's a car, but I didn't observe total queues for the service.

For a run of 17.000, except for an incomprehensible case, there are no problems with the valve.

For me personally, this car fit all 100. Like a good English suit. :) However, the possession of such a computerized car imposes certain responsibilities on those. its attendants, including the driver. It is difficult to say whether this is good or bad, the TLC Prado does not require such attention, but this is a car from the past already, from the age of mechanics. Discovery is the first car of the electronic age. Like everything new, it has its drawbacks, but progress seems to have gone this way and it is inevitable. I already saw the TLC 200 on the software reload in the service, it also hung up. And before that, I saw S80NEW, which died while flashing the installed PTFs. But without this, there will not be all the comfort that we want. So read the manuals, sign up for courses, in order to get the full pleasure of driving these new generation SUVs, you have to match yourself :)

I like the car. What I wish for everyone!

Land Rover Discovery III debuted in 2004. Although stylistically the SUV resembles its predecessor, the differences are visible to the naked eye. Elements such as an asymmetrical rear window and a protruding roof were used on the first generation Discovery. However, in the third incarnation, all this looks more serious.

At the heart of Discovery III is a load-bearing body with an integrated frame and fully independent suspension. This design was designated IBF (Integrated Body Frame - a frame integrated into the body). In 2008, the British decided to restyle. The changes were minimal. The orange direction indicators have been replaced with clear ones, while the black matte plastic on the outside has given way to body-colored elements. A Harman/Kardon audio system is standard equipment.

After the update, the SUV lasted on the market for only a year. Land Rover Discovery IV was introduced in 2009. But in fact, this is just an advanced restyling of the third generation.

Engines

Petrol:

4.0 V6 (218 HP);

4.4 V8 (295 hp).

Diesel:

TDV6 2.7 V6 (190 hp).

The range of offered motors is very narrow. The 2.7-liter turbodiesel was developed by Ford in conjunction with PSA and was used in the Jaguar S-Type and Peugeot 607. True, with a twin turbocharger and 220 hp. 190 "horses" is too little for a large SUV. The average consumption of 9-12 l / 100 km is a very good result for such a size and weight. However, the engine is very capricious.

Most of the problems are created by the injection system and the turbocharger (about $ 800 for a new one). Remarkably, the dual-mass flywheel does not give up as often as in other models with this engine. The disadvantages include the presence of a particulate FAP filter. If the SUV is operated mainly in the city, then problems with it can hardly be avoided. Sometimes there are cases of damage to the crankshaft. In addition, the valve of the exhaust gas recirculation system (EGR) is clogged with soot. The cost of a new one is about 150-250 dollars.

One of the major problems is the glow plugs, which are difficult to unscrew. The other is timing. One belt is located at the front of the engine, and the other for the injection pump from the rear - from the side of the box. Replacement will cost about $500-700.

Gasoline engines are much more stable. Both were developed by Ford. Engines are very greedy. The 4.4-liter V8 will consume at least 20 l/100 km in the city.

Technical features

As befits a true Land Rover, Discovery is equipped with a proprietary all-wheel drive system with a center differential. A rear differential lock is also installed, and in difficult conditions, electronic assistants - ETC, ESP and HDC - will come to the rescue. The Terrain Response system allows you to choose one of the modes that will allow you to overcome sand, snow, slippery grass and stones without any problems. The only problem is the low ground clearance and large wheels (17-20 inches) with low profile tires.

Discovery III was equipped with one of two gearboxes: 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic. Both front and rear are equipped with independent suspension. For the more demanding, air suspension was offered. It allows you to increase ground clearance up to 24 cm. In EuroNCAP crash tests, the British SUV performed so-so, but earned 4 stars.

Faults

Land Rover vehicles have never been reliable. Fortunately, Discovery 3 is better than its predecessor in this regard. But it is still far from perfection. Quite quickly, the suspension elements of silent blocks and ball levers wear out. A comprehensive replacement will require an investment of around $1,000. In rich trim levels, air bags wear out by 150-200 thousand km. Replacement costs a lot. In addition, the air compressor may fail, and leaks appear in the system. There are also problems with wiring - a cascade of errors appears on the display.

Air bellows don't usually have a good reputation, but in this model they are pretty reliable. Replacement is not very difficult. The cost is about $300 each. The compressor will fail much faster - about $ 800.

Before buying a Land Rover Discovery III, it is imperative to check the steering rack. It is prone to leaks and backlash. Tie rods are another weak point of this car. Over time, the brake activator may “grunt” loudly.

The owners of the British off-road vehicle complain about leaks from the gearbox. Quite rarely, but there are cases of damage to the driveshaft, its support and the front differential.

Rough maintenance (wrong type of oil or over tightening with an oil change) can wear out the transfer case bearings. The cost of a used handout is about $ 300, a replacement is the same amount.

Another unpleasant problem is a cracked sunroof. Buying a used version is almost impossible.

Discovery 3 car is not only very complex, but also full of unusual solutions, forcing you to contact only specialized service centers. A simple example. In versions with air suspension, after replacing the steering rods, it is impossible to adjust the wheel alignment angles without a specialized computer.

Sometimes corrosion is found on the frame, which does not happen on the body. Before buying, carefully check the condition of the frame.

Spring suspension is much more durable.

Conclusion

Land Rover Discovery III is an SUV with a reliable all-wheel drive system. The car is relatively durable, practical and very spacious. Without a doubt, one of its main advantages is the original design. This car cannot be confused with any other.

Listing the advantages, we should not forget about the rich equipment and high level of comfort. Unfortunately, not everyone can afford to maintain a Land Rover Discovery. The prices for some spare parts are very high, and repairs are difficult and expensive. In addition, you need to try hard to find a competent specialist who understands Land Rover.

If you change the oil in the automatic transmission more than once every 240,000 km (as recommended by the manufacturer), then there is a chance for a long and proper operation of the machine. The cost of the procedure with oil and an oil filter is about $ 500.

The Land Rover Discovery 3, produced by the English company Land Rover, was produced from 2004 to 2009. The car represented the third generation of the Discovery lineup, which was recognized as the most successful in the history of the famous SUV. The first and second production periods of Discovery fell on the heyday of automotive technology around the world. In the early nineties, one after another, unique, and most importantly effective, technologies appeared that were immediately used in the automotive industry.

Along with new technical developments, competition has increased. It was fully reflected in the SUV segment, since the production of expensive cars has always been in the struggle for superiority in the field of maximum comfort, efficiency of power units and speed characteristics. The first places in the crossover market were traditionally occupied by the Japanese, but the British manufacturers did not lag behind. Releasing models such as the Land Rover Discovery SUV, they were not going to be inferior to competitors.

Start of production

The base model was introduced in 1989 and immediately established itself as a worthy successor to the iconic Range Rover, which has long been in the category of the most sought-after crossovers. The high reputation of this car is explained by impeccable technical characteristics and a decent level of comfort. The new model had to go the same way: it was waiting for the future of a super popular car.

At first, the Land Rover Discovery was produced in a three-door version, and only a year later two rear doors were added. Such a delay was caused by the need to establish the assembly process. All frame SUVs, regardless of their design perfection, go through the annual testing procedure.

Characteristics

The Land Rover Discovery 3 model incorporates all the technological innovations that were developed in 2004. These are ventilated brake discs of increased diameter, a hydraulic pressure regulator that cuts off excessive flow at low vehicle loads, a new generation power steering, pneumatic independent suspensions and much more.

US sales

In North America, Land Rover Discovery 3 was sold under the symbol LR3. The technical characteristics of the machine included the Body-Frame frame chassis with its integration into the body frame, which provided a significant strength factor for the entire undercarriage. The resulting body rigidity was sufficient to counteract the twisting effect that all four-wheel drive SUVs suffer from.

Chassis

Another know-how of that time was The Terrain Response system was built into a dependent front suspension with a continuous axle of a differentiated design and a lever-pendulum, with the same one-piece axle, at the rear. Compressed air modules ensured the perfect smoothness of the car, which is unusual for a crossover designed to drive over bumps. However, thanks to this system, the comfort level of the Land Rover Discovery 3 increased dramatically. The handling of the car has also improved.

The car uses a full all-wheel drive scheme with a free center differential. The conventional locking mechanism has been replaced by a brand new ETS control system that slows down spinning wheels. But in addition to the new option, the car was still equipped with standard four-circuit anti-lock brakes ABS with uniform force distribution and the new Hill Descent Control system, which automatically reduces the speed of descent on steep slopes.

Both axles, front and rear, were suspended on longitudinal lever structures, so the car needed transverse load neutralizers. At the rear, a fairly effective Watt mechanism was used to offset these efforts, and a Panhard rod was installed on the front suspension. Both devices were regulated by the ACE system, Active Cornering Enhancement, which, as necessary, changes their stiffness in the process of stabilizing roll stability. In addition to its main function, ACE helps to reduce vehicle roll when driving on the highway, at the time of corner entry, and also automatically increases ground clearance between the body and the road when conditions require it.

Power point

The Land Rover Discovery 3 engine was offered in three variants:

  • gasoline, with a V-shaped arrangement of eight cylinders, a volume of 4.4 liters and a thrust of 300 liters. With.;
  • turbodiesel with a capacity of 190 liters. with., with a volume of 2.7 liters;
  • in the USA and Canada, the car was supplied with a four-liter engine from the Explorer, with a capacity of 213 hp. With.

Diesel engines were paired with a six-speed manual transmission, while gasoline engines were equipped with a 6-speed automatic.

Complete set

For the Russian market, a complete set is offered in three versions: S - standard, SE - improved and HSE - "luxury". Their difference is minimal, but the price range is quite significant. The basic package does not contain expensive accessories, devices and newfangled technical options. Improved includes a set of airbags in an extended version. Emergency inflatable devices are located around the entire perimeter of the cabin and protect passengers and the driver at the time of side and frontal collisions, as well as from rear impacts.

The HSE package is distinguished by the presence of all of the above tools, plus rollover protection - ARM, stability control and a full version of ABS with separate anti-lock function on all four wheels.

Inner space

The interior of the car is impressive in its size. The body is seven-seater, with a remote arrangement of seats. If desired, two more seats could be added, but the designers decided first of all to create an atmosphere of comfort in the car, and this became possible only if there was free space.

The driver's seat is located high, which provides a wide panoramic view. Both the backrest and the seat cushion have about ten different possible positions, which allows a person of any build and height to sit behind the wheel. The steering column is also equipped with adjusting devices, its inclination can be changed within 12 degrees, and the height is adjustable in the range of 16 centimeters. In addition, an additional option can be turned on for the steering wheel - when the engine is stopped, the column automatically rises and goes forward to the dashboard, which allows the driver to freely exit.

The huge interior of the car is transformed in a matter of minutes: the seats of the second and third rows are folded so that a perfectly flat platform is obtained, on which any cargo can be placed. However, the car already has a spacious trunk, the capacity of which exceeds two and a half square meters. The carrying capacity of the car is 1800 kilograms. At full load, the brake activity regulator is activated, in which case the pressure in the rear segment main pipes increases to maximum values.

Repair options

The operating conditions of an SUV are close to extreme: the car overcomes various obstacles on its way and, at the same time, the loads on its units, chassis, engine and transmission increase many times over. At some point, there is a need for maintenance or overhaul of the machine. The technical restoration of such an SUV as the Discovery 3 must be done on time, since all the parts and mechanisms of the car are interconnected - a defect in one part will inevitably affect the operation of others.

In order to repair the Land Rover Discovery 3, it is necessary to diagnose the technical condition of the car in advance in order to clarify the list of required parts. Spare parts for an SUV are quite expensive, so it is better to purchase only the most necessary ones. For example, a broken headlight on a Land Rover Discovery 3 can cost $440 to replace with a new one—a price that is certainly high. Repairing a car with spare parts is not difficult if it is carried out in a specialized technical service center.

Land Rover Discovery 3: owner reviews

For the entire time of production of the SUV, and this period has already passed the twenty-five-year milestone, there has not been a case when Land Rover's technical services received complaints about the discrepancy between the quality criteria declared by the manufacturer. Model Land Rover Discovery 3, which has always been positively reviewed, is not only one of the most reliable, but also one of the most prestigious in the world.

The level of comfort, good speed parameters, impressive capacity and carrying capacity - all these characteristics apply to the Land Rover Discovery 3 SUV. Owner reviews confirm its high reputation.
