All about Toyota Land Cruiser 80. New comment

If the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 is a pipe dream for you and you can’t afford the “weave” either, take a closer look at the good old Toyota Land Cruiser 80. In some ways it is even better than modern models. Debuting in 1990, the 80-series Land Cruiser made a small revolution in the off-road world.

This model combines comfort, maneuverability and amazing endurance. Largely thanks to the "eighties" there was a phrase about the fact that "Toyota do not break down." Is it so? Of course not, everything can be broken, including even that which, in principle, does not break. So, what's in store for the new owner of the TLC 80? Given the advanced age of the model, anything can wait, so we will highlight only the typical points of application of money and attention.

RUST - PAST
The body and frame are very strong, anti-icing agents come off them like water off a duck's back. At the same time, there are several places where rust lives quietly and peacefully for years and does not move anywhere. You can find it on the frames of the rear side windows and on the air intake panel (this is the one from which the wiper drives come out). On the STD and GX versions, which have one large wicket-type door at the back, there will certainly be problems with the door hinges.

You can often hear about current windshields. However, the point here is a violation of technology when replacing them. Simply, the installers did not lubricate the sealing gum with a special sealant. It is not worth delaying the elimination of this leak. Water getting inside, over time, leads to problems with the electrical part. The electrics themselves are reliable, except that the retractable antenna turns sour from dirt. If the stove blows badly, then you do not need to buy a new motor. This is a clogged radiator of the heating system, because the design does not provide for a cabin filter. What else about the cabin should be noted? Salt can rot the pipes going to the second stove / air conditioner. So that one day a flood does not happen, it is worth cleaning the drain channels of the sliding sunroof.

The most pleasant and durable trim option is velor. True, it is not found on the utilitarian version with the STD index, where everything is exclusively vinyl. As for the leather interior, this is the prerogative of the top version of the VX. By the way, it’s not worth chasing the skin on purpose, it is slippery, cold and eventually becomes covered with unpleasant cracks.

INLINE SIX ONLY

The engines are represented by in-line six-cylinder units: gasoline, diesel and turbodiesel. Gasoline engines were like carbureted 3F-E 4.0 l

(155 hp), 1FZ-F 4.5 l (190 hp), and injection 1FZ-FE 4.5 l (205–215 hp). Naturally aspirated diesel 1HZ with a volume of 4.2 liters is presented in several modifications with a capacity of 120 liters or more. With. up to 135 l. With. Its turbo version was called 1HD-T 4.2 l (165 hp), and in the 24-valve version - 1HD-FT (170 hp).

Gasoline engines are considered eternal. And with moderate average annual runs, their operation costs no more than diesels. For example, in a diesel engine, you need to change the oil more often, and it fits in there ... 11 liters, against 8 liters in a gasoline engine. In addition, diesel engines have a timing belt drive, while gasoline engines have a chain drive that does not require replacement and maintenance.

As for diesels, despite their maintainable injection pump and lower fuel consumption, they can put a big pig. The fact is that it is very problematic to adjust fuel equipment in Russia. No, adjusting a worn out carburetor is also unrealistic, but buying a new one will cost a more or less sane amount - $ 300-400. Trouble can cause cracks in the receiving part of the muffler on the 1FZ-FE engine (due to a clogged first catalyst). Brewing them is pointless, only change.

NOT ONLY PERMANENT
In the transmission, two options are possible - permanent four-wheel drive (full-time 4WD) and plug-in (part-time 4WD). The front axle is in some way the weak link of the "eighty". On average, every 150 thousand km it is necessary to change its filling, including drives. You can only get rid of the replacement of oil seals, thrust bearings and "grenades", but this is a half measure. Moreover, in half of the cases it is worth immediately, to the heap, to repair or replace the axle gearbox with a new one.

This SUV can drive fast, 150–160 km/h are quite real speeds for it. However, those who like to drive the bridge will live noticeably less than 100 thousand km. Of course, with the beam of the bridge itself, if the stones are not uprooted with it, nothing can happen. Although on healthy wheels during side impacts, it is possible to bend the necks of the beam (followed by the turning balls). By the way, with non-sagging springs without a lift, wheels with a diameter of 32 inches stand up.

It is also necessary to monitor the seals, however, they can leak not only from old age, but also because of clogged breathers. Manual gearbox, transfer case and rear axle are not at risk. The automatic transmission is very reliable, and a small bump when shifting from third to fourth gear is not a reason to sound the alarm.

Cardan shafts and their crosses also go indefinitely, if you do not forget to put grease in their grease fittings at each MOT.

NOT REPAIRABLE

Fully dependent spring suspension with colossal travel is simple and tenacious. Silent blocks of the front and rear suspensions with a calm driving style do not require replacement up to 150-180 thousand. The wear of silent blocks is felt by the fact that the SUV begins to “float” along the road. Shock absorbers and tie rods are also not among the frequently purchased parts.

Oil leaks from the steering gear indicate that the "bobby is dead." Over time, the gearbox will have to be changed entirely. Trying to sort it out is a waste of money. For more than 10,000 km, such a repair is not enough. Checked multiple times. Even in the steering, there may be a power steering pump on the way. The life of the pump shortens the frequent holding of the steering wheel in extreme positions. Well, ignoring the fact that the power steering fluid is sometimes worth changing.

In general, the model has one or two weak points. But this is true only for moderately well-groomed specimens. Alas, you can look for such a car for a long, very long time. After all, the principle of “driving until it breaks down” is very common among our motorists. It is almost impossible to bring a running “eighty” into a decent trouble-free condition within a reasonable budget. Here are real examples. The first owner, who did scheduled maintenance every 10,000 km, had a car that covered 350,000 km. During this time, it was changed only consumables, silent blocks with shock absorbers and moved the front axle. Since then her story was in plain sight, it is known that before the next sale she ran another 200 thousand km, also without global cash injections and serious breakdowns. Here it must be added that all its operation took place in a calm mode and without off-road.

But in another “eighties” known to me personally, a whole sea of \u200b\u200bstrength and money was poured. This car has changed many owners and was used mainly off-road. Some atypical troubles regularly surfaced in him: either the brakes would leak, or the axle shaft bearing would jam.

FOR TROPHY HEAVY

Despite the very respectable age of the representatives of this model, they are still being stolen. So when buying, it’s worth breaking through the VIN not only according to the criminal base, but also in the auto shop according to the spare parts program. Often, under documents from STD, they stole and collected expensive VX. This is fraught with the fact that, even if there are no claims from the law, questions will arise with the purchase of spare parts. Since, due to the many modifications, it is not worth counting on the interchangeability of parts.

Thinking about buying, you need to understand that this is not a trophy, but an expeditionary SUV. Heavy, with a wheelbase of 2850 mm and decent overhangs, it does not feel like it is in its native element in serious off-road. Nevertheless, for trips associated with the exit from the asphalt, it is one hundred percent suitable. In addition, as brand experts say, this is the last real Land Cruiser with a colossal margin of safety, thick body metal and the same paintwork.

Thanks to the smooth contours characteristic of passenger cars, the LC 80 looks very favorably with most SUVs of its time. But not only an attractive appearance played a role in the popularity that this model, of course, became the main hit of Toyota, was to gain. First of all, it is, of course, rich equipment and multi-purpose. The new Land Cruiser could be used both as a workhorse, and as a car for the whole family, and as a luxurious "cruiser" of the executive class. According to the tasks, it was possible to choose the standard STD package, the extended GX or VX, the luxury version, which provided for the presence of a velor or leather interior, alloy wheels, an electric sunroof, full power accessories, dual climate control, heated front seats, a refrigerator, a CD player , winches, etc. The VX-Limited Active Vacation package, equipped with a fold-out bedroom with curtains, a gas stove and even a sink, is ideal for travelers.

For the Land Cruiser 80, a wide range of in-line six-cylinder powertrains was intended. Petrol engine 3F-E (4 l) with a power of 155 hp - not the most common option (produced before 1993), extremely reliable, but very voracious - fuel consumption in mixed mode is about 24 l / 100 km. This engine was replaced by a more modern in all respects 1FZ-FE (4.5 l) with 24 valves and a power of 215 hp, with which fuel consumption is 17.5 l / 100 km. Diesel connoisseurs could choose either the naturally aspirated 1HZ (4.2 l) with 135 hp or the turbocharged 1HD-T (4.2 l) with 165 hp, which since 1995 has been replaced by the 1HD-FT with 170 hp

All "eighties" Land Cruisers were equipped with dependent spring front and rear suspension with solid axles attached to a welded frame. We note the high reliability and durability of this design, which is almost not inferior to the machines of the 60th and 70th series. Expensive versions of the LC 80 were equipped with a suspension with adjustable stiffness. Four-wheel drive was offered in different versions. Part-Time - hard-wired front-wheel drive, no center differential, with freewheels in the front hubs and a reduction gear. Or systems with permanent FullTime all-wheel drive - with a center differential and a hard forced lock, as well as (as an option) front and rear differential locks. Depending on the configuration, Land Cruiser came with both mechanical and automatic transmissions.

The first 80-series Land Cruisers demonstrate the standard approach to safety inherent in previous generations of vehicles: only belts and a safety steering wheel are equipped. As it was released, the model received additional equipment: at first, the ABS system was offered only as an option, but since 1996 it has been included in the standard equipment of some trim levels along with airbags for the driver and front passenger. For better impact absorption in a collision, pipes have been integrated into the doors.

The only and relative, of course, the disadvantage of the Land Cruiser 80 series can be called a high cost, despite the fact that cars of this generation have long since passed into the category of used ones. The explanation for this is quite simple: after all, this frame SUV is one of the most reliable cars and, even taking into account obsolescence, is still highly valued on the market.

The topic of our review is the Toyota Land Cruiser 80. This series was created for those who want a real “serious” jeep, but there is no money for the 100 and 200th. Although these cars were developed in the nineties, they even now bypass more modern jeep models in some respects. Immediately after the appearance on the world market, these SUVs have become revolutionary. They combined excellent performance, reliability and comfort that many predecessors and competitors lacked.

Why is the 80s still so popular? In order to understand this, you need to dig a little deeper, familiarizing yourself with the history of the creation of this car.

Toyota, developing a promising new jeep in the 80s, tried to create an “armored train on wheels” that would feel equally comfortable in the snow, in the desert, with any quality of road surface, regardless of climate and other nuances.

After the "Toyota War" of 1986 - the conflict between Libya and Chad, Japanese manufacturers realized that they had underestimated the potential of their own products. Based on the best practices, they created a platform that is not inferior to the “immortal” Hilux, which they could not “finish off” in the Top Gear program, either by drowning, or by fire, or by falling from a blown up house.

Interestingly, they almost succeeded. Of course, the 80 is not such a weapon of the apocalypse as the pickup truck mentioned above, but the tasks before it were somewhat different. Still, buyers are unlikely to put anti-aircraft missile systems and recoilless rifles on it.

It is very easy to distinguish a car created before and after restyling. On the old version, Toyota is written on the grille, and since 1995, instead of the inscription, they began to use the brand logo.

These machines broke down so rarely that for many they actually became the standard of “indestructible” machines for the most difficult conditions. So, suppose you decide to buy such a car from your hands. What should be feared, what is better to pay attention to?

Rusting of body parts and frame

In terms of rust, the owners of the Toyota Land Cruiser 80 are very lucky, because. The manufacturer has chosen very high quality materials. The car is not afraid of the reagents used to deal with ice. However, there are places where there is rust, but once it appears, it does not grow like mold. For example, you can often find it on the air intake in the frame area and on the metal frames of the rear windows.

Small problems. Causes and elimination

If you have an old Kruzak 80 GX, or STD, there are problems with the rear door hinges and windshield. Very often it turns out that the tightness of the rubber bands is broken. This is not a factory defect, but an acquired one. When the glass was changed, the craftsmen forgot about the sealant. As a result, during rain, the glass begins to let moisture through, which is very bad for the state of the electrics in the car. So you have to take the car to the service and eliminate this shortcoming.

Another common problem is the souring of the external retractable antenna when dirt gets in. Here, no prevention helps.

Sometimes the radiator in the interior heating system can become clogged. If you do not understand, then you might think that the stove is broken and you need to change the motor.

Salt is detrimental to the pipes that go to the air conditioner / oven. Do not forget that the drain channels do not need to be cleaned at the sliding sunroof.

Which finish is best?

Most of the cars in the "base" were produced with vinyl. It's not that bad, but it's not ideal either. But on STD, most often, it is he who is found.

There are many lovers of the "eighties" who, foaming at the mouth, prove that nothing in nature can be better than a leather interior. Leather, it's beautiful, prestigious, but not practical. Especially when the car went into its third decade. Care is required, and without it, the material dries out and becomes covered with small cracks. In addition, this material is not the most pleasant to the touch. And in winter, sitting on such a seat is corny cold. Leather trim is typical for the Toyota Land Cruiser 80 VX. You won't find it on other versions.

The best option for quality and comfort would be velor. It is warm, soft, and, with careful handling, durable.

Transmission types and their features

This jeep was produced with permanent and plug-in all-wheel drive. The Achilles' heel of the 80s is the front axle. It is prophylactically recommended to change drives and other parts every 120 - 150 thousand km. Of course, if money is very tight, there is an option to temporarily save money, buy only “grenades”, oil seals and thrust bearings. But, if you do not want to face a lot of problems in the foreseeable future, change / repair everything, including the axle gearbox.

Our people traditionally like to dissect at high speeds. For the Land Cruiser 80, there is no problem in accelerating, for example, up to 150 km / h on straight sections of the track. Only now, this machine was going to be for completely different roads in terms of quality. Therefore, take care of the bridge. It can last a very long time if you drive a little slower. Especially on rough sections of the track. Fans of fast driving will face probable breakdowns already in the first hundred kilometers. For example, beam necks can bend.

If you are lucky and the springs on the car have not sagged yet, you can put 32-inch wheels without making a lift. Gearbox mechanics, transfer case and rear axle are reliable and will serve you for a long time. Automation can sometimes be frightening with a blow when the gear shifts from 3 to 4. But this should not be considered a malfunction. During the inspection, it is better to change the lubricant of the cardan shafts and crosspieces. Then the replacement will not be needed for a very long time.

About engines

Speaking about the technical characteristics of the Toyota Land Cruiser 80, it would be strange not to mention what power units are installed on this jeep. These are 6-cylinder petrol, diesel and turbodiesel engines.

If you prefer carburetor type engines, there is a 4-liter with 155 hp to choose from. With. and 4.5 liters / 190 liters. With. They have enough power, and fuel consumption is not as frightening as it might seem. For lovers of injectors, there is a choice of 4.5 liters. engines with power from 205 to 215 hp. With.

You can also find a Land Cruiser 80 with a 4.2 liter diesel. The power of such a unit, depending on the chosen modification, varies from 120 liters. s., up to 135 liters. With. Two turbocharged variations of 165 hp were also produced. With. and 170 l. With. (24 valves).

According to most experts, gasoline engines turned out to be the most tenacious. At the same time, they are unlikely to cost more to maintain than diesels. Unless, of course, you use the machine 24 hours a day, 30 days a month.

Oil service is cheaper than gasoline. It takes 8 liters for it, and 11 for a diesel. Another huge plus is that gas-distributing mechanism chain drives are installed on gasoline units, which are clearly more reliable than belt drives on diesel engines.

High pressure fuel pump on diesel engines is subject to repair. Only specialists who can work normally on setting up fuel equipment may not be found in your city. Sometimes it's really easier to buy a new carburetor for 300 bucks.

Characteristics

Take, for example, the technical specifications of the Land Cruiser 80 with a 4.2 l / 135 hp turbocharged diesel engine. and permanent all-wheel drive. This is a full size 5 door Jeep. Body length - 4.97 meters, width - 1.83 m, height - 1.96 m. Cross-country ability provides not only the presence of all-wheel drive, but also a clearance of 22 cm.

The car has a comfortable large trunk with a volume of 832 liters. If you fold the rear row of seats, we get a more impressive 1368 hp. This is quite enough to take a couple of tents, a folding barbecue and other things out of town. The curb weight of the car is 2.22 tons, and the total weight is 3.06 tons.

This modification was produced with a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual. Both boxes, as mentioned above, have a good margin of safety, and last a very long time if used correctly.

A disc type brake system was used. The brakes on the front wheels are ventilated. Complaints about brake failures are found only among those owners who forget to check the status of the system on time.

The car is considered expeditionary, and is not suitable for the trophy. It is also quite realistic to use it as a family station wagon, where you can drive around the city, to the country house, and for any work matters.

The obvious plus of a diesel engine is that it runs quite successfully on domestic fuel. If the car is serviced regularly, the engine will work properly.

How to choose a Land Cruiser 80

When a car is over 10 years old, you buy it at your own risk anyway. Very often, cars come across that, before being sold, were put in order outwardly, tinted, etc. But their suspension can crumble right along the road. Remember that there is no guarantee and no service.

So, choosing "Kruzak", you have two options:

  • hire a person from the workshop who will climb into every crack and find all the problems;
  • look for a car with low mileage. There are some. If equipment was bought in the 90s solely for prestige, and was not used on any off-road, then the condition of the chassis and engine will be excellent.

Sometimes there are cars from the owners who really blew off the dust particles. Of course, this is a rarity, but if you become the proud owner of such a Toyota Cruiser 80, with careful operation, you can drive it for another 10 years for sure.

You will be very lucky to find a jeep of the last year of manufacture. In 1998, not many copies managed to get off the assembly line. After all, in March, the assembly was stopped.

If you look at prices, they can vary between 1-3 thousand dollars. For example, there are cars on the market in 1996 with a range of 200 thousand km. This is a diesel modification with a manual transmission. A good 24-valve engine will last for many more years. A car costs an average of 15 - 16 thousand dollars.

For 13 thousand. That is, you can take a car in 1997, but with high mileage. You may be lucky here, or you may not.

There are even cheaper offers. For example, 7.99 thousand dollars for a 1992 Kruzak. Run 254 thousand km, which is very modest for this age. Petrol engine 4 liters, automatic transmission. For this money you get a car from one owner. There is a sunroof, air conditioning, cruise control, audio system, alarm.

Sometimes for 17 - 25 thousand dollars come across real masterpieces, which the owner not only perfectly maintained, but also tuned.

What will have to be changed?

After about 150 thousand km. mileage requires replacement of suspension silent blocks. This should be done even if outwardly the parts do not look too worn out. Otherwise, after a while you will notice that the car starts to wear from side to side. If you are lucky enough to buy a Land Cruiser 80, on which the previous owner recently changed not only silent blocks, but also traction with shock absorbers, you can relax. These parts are durable and require replacement every few years.

If oil is leaking from the steering gear, there is nothing to repair here. To sort out is more expensive for yourself, it is better to buy a new one than after another 10 thousand km. again scold the Japanese manufacturer and all his relatives.

The power steering pump can fly. The reasons come across different. For example, the owner forgot to change the fluid, or overexposed the steering wheel at extreme points.

Age and mileage

These machines began to be produced at the end of 1989, and were produced until the spring of 1998. It is difficult to find equipment from the 80s, and its condition leaves much to be desired. But cars from the nineties are much more interesting. It is better to take a car that had one owner, so there is definitely less risk of getting into a brand new jeep, but broken inside.

Good day everyone! I decided to update my previous review and write another one. Last.

I drove the car a lot. Cruiser - like an all-weather fighter - is not afraid of anything. He especially helped me out when frosts hit forty and below. Shortly after writing my first review, I removed the Webasto from the Padzherik and put it on the Cruiser. Still, it was a pity to torment him with a cold start in such frosts. Yes, and warming up at idle has become easier. And "Padzherik" was content with auto-heating at the set temperature.

Over the past period, the radiator was replaced (the upper tank began to get wet) - 3000 rubles, the pump - 800 rubles (not native, from the company "555"), candles, high-voltage wires. I adjusted the valves — the gaps were too big (riding on gas contributes to this). The rear wheel bearings, universal joint crosses, brake pads were replaced. After replacing the pads, I thought a little - and decided to immediately replace the brake discs (rear). Which is what was done.

Strengths:

  • Strong
  • Reliable
  • Unpretentious

Weak sides:

  • Few are left

I've been using this miracle for over ten years now.

Absolutely reliable. There has never been a fatal breakdown that would have happened in hard-to-reach areas. Everything that happened happened in the city 10 minutes drive to the service station. Apotheosis — Went a week with a broken connecting rod. Made my way to the station.

Gas allows you to save a lot on fuel. I went to Altai, climbed mountains. The car is a dream.

Strengths:

  • Fifteen years of service. Kapitalka engine with real 400,000 km of hard use. By the way, the overhaul cost only 85tr. Eternal.

Weak sides:

  • The presence of such goods on the market causes an economic crisis))) Nobody (except owners) needs indestructible cars, phones, etc. For why buy a car that you want to fuse in a couple of years, if you can make yourself an absolutely reliable friend for life. Imagine how much I would change all these Focuses-Lancers-Lacetti-Nexias in 11 years)))

Review of Toyota Land Cruiser Customwagon 4.2 TD (Toyota Land Cruiser) 1991

Hi all!

I present to you a review of an extremely unusual car Tyota Land Cruiser 80, 4.2 TDI, automatic, with a mileage of 650,000 km. Its uniqueness is that the car was completely disassembled to the frame, then completely assembled, plus a complete tuning was made.

Initially, I wanted to buy an SUV, always diesel, made in Japan, for some reason then I wanted an automatic, within 800,000 rubles. Before buying, I considered the following options:

Strengths:

  • Good reliable car with a very reliable engine

Weak sides:

  • 80th in good condition is very difficult to find
  • Not suitable as a rogue due to weight

Review Toyota 4.2 TD automatic transmission (Toyota Land Cruiser) 1995 Part 2

And now what I did not have time to write. Cons that I did not write:

- Recently, the pump on the fuel pump was covered (stopped pumping fuel after I turned off the car). I had to download it manually for a week =) Replacement is inexpensive, well, it’s not like everything lasts forever ...

- The next bad news is ABS, for some reason which ABS sensor began to read information incorrectly. Consequently, the brakes were not so good. I drove to those centers, they said it was impossible to find which sensor was buggy. Maybe if you take it off and clean it, it will help... By the way, the replacement of the sensor is 8 thousand, and this is no longer cool =)

Review Toyota 4.2 TD automatic transmission (Toyota Land Cruiser) 1995

So, the car was bought in May 2007. For two years I thought about buying a jeep. In addition to 80, there was a Nissan Patrol variant, but stopped at 80, because. Patrol is a machine more for the fields than for everyday use. From the very beginning I wanted a diesel with a gun, and surprisingly quickly found one. 4.2 turbodiesel with automatic transmission Automatic transmission is a thing without which one cannot survive in Moscow. I went to Moscow to look at the options, specially wrote out several addresses with telephones (I myself live in Zelenograd).

I looked at one option, the equipment is the weakest, and the view was somehow not like that. At first, I was even upset and thought that it would be better to drive my Audi A6 Avant in 1995, by the way, I had a lot of cars. First, two deuces, then a six, then I went to Germany and bought a Ford Scorpion, after which there was a Mercedes S-class in a 126 body 5.6 SEL (I also went to Germany for it), then a BMW 7 model, 124 Merc, then the difficult situation forced me to change seats on Passat B2 for 300 bucks, then exchanged for the same, only in better condition, then Audi 100, Audi A6 (both with 2.8 engine).

Let's continue at the expense of Kruzak … called the second number, made an appointment, an hour later I saw this swallow. The car is in perfect condition, the only thing is a small dent on the wing. I opened the hood, everything is clean, like new (the car was serviced in a Toyota center. The interior is perfect, VX equipment, all power accessories! I took a ride, I had a son with me (he was shocked), the car goes well, I liked it terribly.

Strengths:

  • patency
  • Good dynamics for such a car (on the highway 170 goes)
  • prestige
  • Comfort - the VX package is perfect
  • Reliability

Weak sides:

  • Consumption (after all, the weight is very decent) an average of 20 liters
  • Poor visibility when reversing

Review of Toyota Land Cruiser 4.5 24V 4WD (Toyota Land Cruiser) 1996

Cruiser … About 15-20 years ago, this word took my breath away. He became my dream. As I thought then - unrealizable. But times are changing; the well-being of the people is also changing. Gradually, and I had the opportunity to buy a car. The cars were different - from the old VAZ-21033 to the brand new Pajero-4. In August 2008, I brought a 2003 Honda SRV from Ussuriysk. Rather from boredom than from the desire to earn something by selling it. Washed, cleaned and drove to the car market. And then the crisis crept up ... The cars hung. After about six months, I no longer hoped for a successful sale. I did not want to keep the SRV-shku; why did I need a front wheel drive car if I love fishing and traveling on and off the road? In addition, I already have a Pajero-4. I advertised for an exchange for ... Toyota Land Cruiser-80. And it worked! Soon I had OH… The dream did come true! The car was with numerous small "jambs", but I was not embarrassed. So, what we have ... Cruiser 80. 1996 release, dark green. The engine is a freaky in-line gasoline “six” with a volume of 4.5 liters, a carburetor. The box is mechanical, rigidly connected front axle. Two air conditioners, a refrigerator in the armrest and one stove. In short, the usual "Arab" in the configuration of the GX-R with a "reserve" on the right half of the tailgate. Instead of an additional fuel tank, the former owner hung a 95-liter gas cylinder and installed the Italian Lovato HBO, one of the first versions.

The first couple of trips I had to get used to the dimensions of the car. One hood is worth something! But he got used to it quickly and began to “drive”. It was very interesting to compare it with the Pajero. By the way, my review of it is also on this site. Of course, the controllability of the Cruiser is nothing compared to the Pajerovskaya. Or almost none. Speed qualities are also inferior. But of course, I understand that Kruzak is not a slalom car, it was just interesting to compare. On the other hand, being inside the machine with every cell you feel its fundamentality, power and reliability. There is no such thing in Pajero (maybe I'm just used to it?), although he is no less charismatic. On a straight track, the Cruiser goes confidently, smoothly and without yaws. But when rebuilding and turning, it noticeably “falls”. The steering is not informative enough; it is understandable - the trapezoid is not a rake. The motor is very high-torque from the lowest revs (again, I involuntarily compare it with Padzherik), decent acceleration in any gear. The brakes are soft but very effective; clutch, gearbox — everything works clearly.

Salon, of course, old-fashioned. Although an off-road Jeep is unlikely to have the insides of a Lexus. Everything is simple, clear and strong. I didn’t like the driver’s seat a little — a little low. Especially the back of the seat. I'll have to think about it and fix it. I also didn’t like two things very much - the operation of the power windows and the efficiency of the headlights. Haven't gotten around to it yet either.

Strengths:

  • Reliability
  • patency
  • Charisma

Weak sides:

Review of Toyota Land Cruiser 4.5 24V 4WD (Toyota Land Cruiser) 1998

Good day to all. Please do not pay attention to errors and typos, thank you in advance for your understanding.

To begin with, the TLC 80 has been my dream for a long time, but somehow I couldn’t buy it. And then one day after the sale of the next car there was a question about buying another car. From that moment began a long and painful search. Like all normal people, I wanted something fresh, prestigious, powerful, beautiful and fast, and most importantly, inexpensive. Many people understand that all these qualities and the word "inexpensive" are incompatible (although there are exceptions everywhere). Therefore, I was looking for a passenger car in more or less normal condition for my cash. I went through all the newspapers, went around all the markets several times and realized that at the moment there was nothing on sale that would interest me from passenger vehicles. Decided to look for the so-called mini SUVs. I went around all the markets again and read all the newspapers, eventually settled on a 2001 Honda CR-V, American, found it in the newspaper, called, the owner said that he would be at the market and in the morning I went there. While I was walking around the market with my eyes, I could see what else I liked. This morning, even the weather said that I had to leave the market in a “new” car, it was warm, the sky was clear and the sun shone brightly from dawn. Moving along the rows, I suddenly saw - here he is, standing all in white, sparkling in the sun like a mirror. Yes, it was TLC 80 98g.v (according to the passport, but in general 97), white, gasoline, GX equipment, automatic transmission, from the Emirates. Then I realized that it was useless to go further and it was necessary to lower its price to my amount (I’ll say right away that the car was already listed for 90t.r. the stands said that the geometry was not broken, but the fact that the body was broken and painted — it didn’t matter, the main thing was that it was whole and on the go). For several days, I went to the services to my friends, they checked everything and said that the condition was good, but there were pigtails. As a result, I bought and became the happy owner of the TLC 80.

First impressions.

Review of Toyota Land Cruiser 80 (4.5 carburetor) (Toyota Land Cruiser) 1997

At one time, in 1997, for work there was a need for a reliable, trouble-free and powerful SUV. With the Internet and reviews then it was problematic, but various auto-reviews in magazines were common. Having gathered information from magazines and, after talking with competent people, we chose the Cruiser. Studying the offers of dealers and what they had in stock, we settled on one of the Moscow salons. Upon arrival, the manager and I went to the parking lot to get acquainted with the chosen car (the budget was somewhat limited). In this scenario, the result was a variant with a vinyl interior, steel rims, without expanders, with a standard radio and a manually pulled out antenna. Not spoiled then by comfortable cars, I was glad about that. But my curiosity got the better of me and I told my guide to open the rest of the Cruisers. We, studying car after car, moved to the far corner. Getting out of the next car I studied, I saw in the corner what I was going to sculpt in the end from the semi-finished product that was originally chosen for purchase. My heart beat a little faster and I, fearing that it would already be a VX equipment (only a piece of a car was visible), nevertheless asked the seller a question, who said that it was a GX and named the price. The price was a little out of the budget (it was originally agreed with the manager about 53 thousand greens, and this one cost about 56 thousand greens). Without losing hope, I immediately requested an inspection of this particular device. When we approached it, I immediately began to note for myself the benefits that we would get by acquiring HIM, and not the one that we initially chose:

  • By installing fender extensions, we would have to change the bumpers too! Because in the configurations that come from the factory without expanders, the bumper is obviously set less wide and when installing the expanders in the place where the expander and bumper meet, the expander sticks out about one and a half centimeters, or even all two ... Ugly.
  • Immediately, the regular aluminum steps immediately caught my eye, which were not on that car and which would also have to be installed (and we didn’t count them then).
  • We sit in the car … The interior is no longer vinyl, but fabric. Somehow it’s more pleasant to the eye and to the touch, and it’s more pleasant to sit on fabric seats ...
  • It is no longer the simplest and cheapest radio with indistinct speakers, but at the very least a simple radio tape recorder with more or less tolerable speakers.
  • You don’t have to drag the antenna with your hands, as once in the 70s on a penny :) For this, a button for the antenna has already been installed in this package.

Having noted for myself all the arguments, I called the decision maker (decision maker). The man was in a great mood and almost immediately gave the go-ahead. I was happy and "digging the earth with my hoof", wanting to pick up the Cruiser as soon as possible.

Finally, I'm driving. My heart is full of joy!!! Until that moment, I had never ridden SUVs (I somehow immediately forgot the UAZ in the army), I plunged headlong into the study of this handsome man. I started the engine and for the first couple of minutes I enjoyed the sound of the engine with my eyes closed. It kind of reminded me of the sound of the surf. It is the sound of waves crashing on the shore ... Not a growl or rumbling, but the sound of the surf. Satisfied with the first sounds, I carefully (absolutely unusual dimensions for me then) left the site and headed for St. Petersburg. Since it still had to be run in, I overclocked it to 120 only a couple of times and then a little bit. Until that moment, driving, in principle, only passenger cars, at first I tried to go around every even the smallest dimple on the road, but as I approached St. Petersburg, I simply began to forget about these dimples and other bumps on the road, tk. with every kilometer I got more and more experience from communicating with this all-terrain vehicle.

Now let's move on to a more mature Toyota driving experience, after 2 years of experience with it and after driving about 100,000 km.

Strengths:

  • Insanely reliable
  • Beautiful
  • indestructible
  • Roomy (10 almost full-fledged seats, including the driver)

Weak sides:

  • Out of production
  • The driver's seat for tall drivers can not be moved far enough away (still a little for complete happiness, you can add)

Review of Toyota Land Cruiser Customwagon 4.2 TD (Toyota Land Cruiser) 1994

Strengths: Reliable, spacious, dynamic in moderation (not for Schumachers). The suspension with regular maintenance is “eternal”, the cross-country ability is 5+ (except for swamps, heavy almost 3 tons), there are few people who want to cut on the road, despite the year of manufacture, it’s solidly the same Land Cruiser, relatively inexpensive spare parts (except for wheels and electrics).

Weak sides: Rigid suspension, at the level of domestic basins. After the Citroen XM turboCT, with its computerized hydro-pneumatic suspension, it feels solid. Tire prices are quite high, the 275/70-16 size is to blame. A lot of left cars.

Toyota Land Cruiser 100 4.2 MT (131 HP) 4×4

A rare car in our market was as popular as the Toyota Land Cruiser 80. A lot of engines, transmissions and several all-wheel drive options. True, the body type of the eightieth series was always the same - a five-door station wagon.

Those who were richer bought a new “kukuruzer” from an authorized dealer, Siberia and Primorye bought right-hand drive cars from the Japanese market with might and main. The most surprising thing is that even today, despite the huge selection of various off-road vehicles on the secondary market, the 80th is still in demand.

In front of me is a 1996 Land Cruiser 80 with the most powerful, 205-horsepower gasoline engine and all the bells and whistles imaginable for those years in the form of two airbags, ABS, a huge sunroof, leather interior and alloy wheels. They ask for 560 thousand rubles for everything.

Bulk carrier

The most surprising thing is that its appearance is not perceived as a terry auto-retro. A normal, adult "steamer", whose hood is the size of a typical children's sandbox. Everything else to match - they did not regret the iron. Judging by the stern nameplate, here we are dealing with permanent, not plug-in all-wheel drive. For a heavy machine, this is more of a plus than a minus.

The inspection began with an assessment of the condition of the body - after all, this “Kruzak” is already 14 years old. He spent the first three years in America, the last eleven in Russia, although you can't tell from him. The magnetic thickness gauge showed: the right front fender, the driver's door, the left rear door and the fender were repainted. However, there are no signs of rust or peeling paint - the body repair was carried out to the level. According to the reviews of servicemen, the “land cruisers” of this series are generally extremely tenacious in terms of corrosion, it’s not for nothing that hard off-road fans love them. By the way, body iron for the "eighties" in Moscow has been counted once or twice, so take care of your "Toyotas".

On the front bumper I found rough traces of contacts with the outside world, and on the back - a mole of the gas filler neck. No wonder: the vast majority of used gasoline "corn" converted to alternative fuels. This is due to the rather strong appetite of the 4.5-liter engine. Given the price of propane, you can ride happily ever after with such an engine.

All-season tires will still serve, but only in city conditions, sticking them in serious mud is like storming Everest in sneakers. But the luxurious chrome-plated kenguryatnik will have to be removed: it does not pass according to current safety standards.

Touch up...

If outwardly the car looks invigorating, then the interior gives out its age: the leather on the steering wheel is worn in places almost to the point of plastic. However, it is easy to mask this defect with a braid on the steering wheel.

The cushion of the front passenger seat is much worse: it is torn! Well, you can buy a tolerable interior for 18 thousand at a disassembly, or simply drape holes with covers of the “alcoholic T-shirt” style for 2500 re.

However, there is a reason to rejoice: the third row of seats was found in the trunk - two comfortable chairs with seat belts. In a good company, a couple of people are never superfluous! The dashboard with an abundance of buttons and levers strongly resembles a two-cassette Sharp of the late eighties. The head unit, by the way, has a cassette deck, although there is also a CD player.

I put the car on a lift. The frame has survived the blows of time, there are no serious pockets of rust, so its number (it is stamped behind the right front wheel) is easy to read.

The middle part of the muffler is welded, there is snot under the oil pan, and the crankshaft rear oil seal has clearly lost its tightness. But the crosses of the cardan shaft are generously lubricated. In general, the car is anywhere, even with oil streaks - they are not fatal. The price of a new seal is 264 rubles, but it’s better to change it yourself: it’s not cheap to disassemble half a car with someone else’s hands.

Now is the time to start the engine and test the veteran of the fight against Russian off-road on the go, because the speedometer already has 140 thousand miles, that is, more than 220 thousand kilometers! Moreover, it was not possible to diagnose the motor with modern means - my scanner did not “hook up” to the car. However, a specialized service for "cruisers" for quite divine 1200-1500 rubles will help you to rummage through the memory of the control unit.

Cruiser on the road

In motion, the "land cruiser" - this is how the name of the model is translated - surprisingly resembles a long-length limousine: it goes quietly, importantly, smoothly.

Despite the years, the automatic transmission conscientiously implements traction in all modes - with proper care, this unit is almost eternal. The only drawback of the short test was that the bare asphalt did not allow to reveal the mighty potential of permanent all-wheel drive .. It remains to take the owner's word that the “corner” is a beast-machine.

True, in the movement some kind of knock was heard from the right. If it comes to buying, this is an occasion for a more thorough check: permanent four-wheel drive repair is not cheap. On the other hand, I completely succumbed to the indescribable charm of this and, by today's standards, a luxurious all-terrain vehicle, offered at a very fair price.

Only turning on the air conditioner kept my head in the cold and kept me from wanting to immediately run to the bank for money. Still, in a big city, a real all-terrain vehicle has nowhere to show itself in all its glory, and rather strong dimensions will turn into eternal problems with parking. And it’s embarrassing to take up so much space in the stream, because the lion’s share of the time I plan to ride alone.

We should also not forget about the costs of maintaining the monster ... No, I won’t buy such a handsome man for myself, but I’ll definitely tell my friend about the car: he is an avid jeeper, and for this category of motorists, the eightieth “corner” is just right.
