Volkswagen Sharan buy in Germany. Typical problems and malfunctions

This text is the previously promised article about chip tuning for the VW Sharan.
Based on the materials of the newspaper Avtobiznes - Weekly.

Every automotive company is trying to find a "golden mean" between such parameters as power, efficiency, reliability and environmental friendliness. Subsequently, this balance develops into a special program, which is embedded in the engine control unit. Electronics controls injection, ignition and limits the speed of the power unit. However, not all motorists are satisfied with the optimal characteristics of the "engine". Just for such drivers, there is the following loophole: neglecting the rest of the parameters, in a short period of time and relatively little money, you can achieve an increase in power and torque, and at the same time remove the speed and speed limiter from the engine, change the moment the gear shift signal is sent to the automatic control unit gearbox (if any, of course, there is one). It is this simple technique that is called chip tuning.
The main advantage of chip tuning compared to other types of powertrain tuning is that there is no mechanical intervention in the engine. Which, in turn, affects the cost of the procedure itself. But miracles, as you know, do not happen. On conventional atmospheric engines, chip tuning is ineffective. Reprogramming the control unit will give a slight increase in power (no more than 7%). The only change that the driver will be able to really experience is the increase in torque at high revs and the removal of the rev limiter and speed limiter. In a word, the game is not worth the candle.
Turbocharged engines (both gasoline and diesel) are a completely different matter. The real increase in engine power after chip tuning can reach from 20% to 30%. The most popular brands for chip tuners are Audi, Seat, Volkswagen, Skoda, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo.

Here I will make a small digression. For the vast majority of readers it would be savagery and blasphemy not to mention the brands Nissan and Honda (we are on the Drome!), but please do not forget we are talking about Belarus. It is even difficult to imagine, and even more difficult to explain to someone who has never been to the Drome what a huge number of interesting Japanese cars have passed by our motorists due to the right-hand drive ban. If some Nissan Cube appears on our roads - people will go nuts - a concept car !!! And this is a Japanese subcompact, and it’s decently used already -:)

But back to the topic. How it's done?

Chip-tuning of our "Sharan" took no more than 20 minutes. The minivan arrived at the track in Borovoy with a 1.9-liter turbodiesel with a capacity of 115 hp, and left with 155 "horses" under the hood. Here, however, a reservation should be made: chip tuning is unacceptable in the field. We went for it for the sake of the experiment. If you approach the matter thoroughly, then, depending on the model, the chip tuning process takes several hours. It would seem that everything is very simple: I removed the chip from the electronic engine control unit, installed a new one in its place. That, in fact, is all. But in reality the situation is somewhat more complicated. Electronic brains most often mean an injector control device. It includes a programmable read-only memory (PROM). The PROM contains a common program that contains a sequence of operating commands and various calibration information for actuators. By changing it, you can completely reconfigure the mode of operation of the injection system. The result of reprogramming the PROM is an increase in torque at low speeds, a decrease in acceleration time, and an increase in maximum engine power.
The reprogramming of the chip is followed by a long and exhausting testing process. This, in fact, distinguishes high-quality chip tuning from handicraft. The main parameters of the engine are checked in various operating modes. And only after that the car is returned to the owner.

Surely the most important question that sane drivers will ask is: "How much does chip tuning affect the engine life and performance of the car?" The first thing that a "chip" car loses in is the environmental friendliness of the exhaust. In Western European countries, a car after chip tuning is automatically subject to a higher environmental tax rate. However, Belarusian fans of fast driving can be calm: in our country they will not start turning the nuts on "chip" cars yet. Next comes the increase in the "appetite" of the motor. However, fuel consumption will depend entirely on driving style. After chip tuning, gasoline engines become more demanding on fuel. Most experts recommend "feeding" gasoline turbodiesels with 98th gasoline.
Oddly enough, but the engine resource suffers the least. Of course, it cannot be said that chip tuning does not contribute to the "survivability" of the motor, it will rather depend on the manner of driving. In extreme conditions, the engine resource will undoubtedly decrease. But during normal operation, the resource will decrease by no more than 10-15%.

Our Sharan, after replacing the chip, did not even make a sound. The key is to start - and the minivan is ready to demonstrate the results of "doping". Everything is relative. Heaven and earth - this is how you can characterize "Sharan" before and after chip tuning. It is necessary to try not to notice the increase in power of 40 "horses". If the 115-horsepower 1.9 TDi engine in the standard version with attempts spun up to 4500 rpm, then the tachometer needle of the "chip" "Sharan" easily crossed the mark of 5500 rpm. The minivan in the literal sense of the word vomits from its place - only smoke from under the wheels. First, second, just about to move on to the third, as colleagues slap on the shoulder: they say, you haven’t had problems with the traffic police for a long time?
After overcoming the 100-kilometer mark, the minivan has a characteristic pickup. "Sharan" provokes violation of the speed limit. However, we still did not dare to test the "chip" minivan for maximum speed - on wet pavement, and even on a highway with fairly dense traffic, such maneuvers are by no means safe.

What did the measurements show? "Sharan" with the "engine" in the standard version, on average, accelerates to "hundreds" in 14.8 seconds. The results are slightly different from the manufacturer's data, but do not forget to make allowances for wet asphalt, worn tires, not ideal road conditions, the profile of the track section and other parameters. The "chip" minivan took 13.4 seconds to overcome the bar of 100 km / h (a gain of 1.4 seconds). "Sharan" after chip tuning "makes" its standard "colleague" and in terms of elasticity. Winning is poured out in 2 seconds. The only negative aspect of the operation carried out on the Sharan was the increased level of emissions. The fact that the 1.9-liter turbodiesel began to smoke more is visible to the naked eye. However, experts assure that this process should stabilize during the first two weeks after chip tuning.

For whom?
Depending on the model, the "Wetterauer" chip tuning kit with work will cost from 590 to 1150 "green". However, experts have no doubt that this factor will not frighten off true connoisseurs of speed and drive. Every year the number of actively tuned drivers in Belarus is growing. The movement of street racers and street fighters, which is gaining momentum every month, is another confirmation of this. And if so, then chip tuning in Belarus has the right to life.

Owners of GT-Rov, STIs, etc. of course they will laugh, but a tuned turbodiesel (!), and even a minivan - you must admit, a rarity.

My golden hands, glory to the Almighty that he rewarded me with them. That's why I do my own repairs. Details try to use the original. The price for them is one and a half, higher, but calmer. I changed the racks in a circle to, hydro. I changed the turbine on the engine (it is with geometry), after flashing about 135 horses on the stand, drums. There is only one way out, give a damn, injection pump, and then calmly start the engine. There are no functions, kickdown, on this year's car. But when I turned off the EGR, pierced the catalyst and changed the DMRV to 037 (the original, by the way, is on the VAZ2110.2114), the thrust increased noticeably. People, try not to change the DMRV, sometimes it is enough to rinse it in alcohol (propyl, isopropyl, ethyl, methyl), while it is wet, put it in place and start the engine. The airflow will dry it out. And you will see the difference in VACE, value, air, I don’t remember the group, and most importantly, you will feel it in traction. The fifth door stopped closing, it turned out that the wires in the package were broken, near the hinges. I dismantled the corrugation, there are about 10 wires, tinned the ends, soldered it, insulated it with heat shrink and .... everything worked, both the wipers and all the lighting equipment. You can tell a lot, but better approach Skype - mabus66661 General impression Inertness, smoothness, grace, solidity and many other qualities of this car. About, sharan, you need to say not a minivan, but a wagon. Steering is very sensitive, especially at speed. Landing on the driver's seat is pleasant, the review is magnificent. Not a sedan (station wagon), but not a bus either. Although, when standing next to the VAZ 2110 and VW T4, it differs little from them in size. More precisely, sharan, between them! I like four swing doors, it's easier with them. There is a problem with sliding ones over time (they sag, they close poorly, access to the salon is limited). My car has a 1998 AFN 1.9 TDI diesel unit with an electronic injection pump. In the people, such cars are called - TRACTOR. But thanks to the presence of the injection pump, I bought this car. Reistaling cars (younger than 2001) came with CDI pump injectors (they are more expensive and capricious). The electrics are easy to repair and much more reliable than cars of recent years (judging by other reviews, many criticize Sharanovsky). Chassis like a tank, except for the front struts. I would put racks one and a half times larger in diameter, yet the weight of the car is about 2 tons. In winter, for a good view, a heated windshield is convenient (consumes about 30 amperes). About the interior, it is Spartan, only the front seats are heated. Behind, oars, in front of electric lifts. Side mirrors on cables without heating, I like it (more reliable, lubricated and no electronics), these were on my Audi 80 B3.

When buying a car, I had a lot of problems with choosing a model. Therefore, I would like to share my opinion about this brand with potential Sharan buyers (maybe it will help someone).

Before Sharan, I had a petrol Fiesta with a Zetec engine. By the way, also a good and fairly reliable machine, though very small. So Sharan's consumption was very striking: on the highway with a cruising speed of ~ 100 km / h, the consumption is 5.8 liters (like the Fiesta), and the machine is almost 2 tons in weight; if ~ 120 km / h, then the consumption is 6.8 l; in the city, depending on traffic conditions (traffic jams) - from 7.3 liters to 10 liters. (the current consumption is shown by the on-board computer).

In many internet sources, Sharan swing rear doors are noted as a disadvantage, but it seems to me that the door on curtains is more reliable and simple than on rails. Yes, and in operation, I do not feel any inconvenience, and the rear passengers too.

The ground clearance is quite high. In the courtyards, sometimes there is a problem with parking, so he can easily drive onto the curb without much difficulty. The only thing is that it’s inconvenient for my 4-year-old son to climb into the salon (a little high), but that’s okay, he will grow up.

Often there is information that the front stabilizer struts serve quite a bit (about 10 thousand km). My opinion is that it all depends on the roads and driving style. I did not change the racks after the purchase, I have already traveled 12 thousand km. And I haven't seen any problems yet.

So, I bought Sharan: I replaced the timing belt with two rollers ($85), replaced all filters (~$45), upper bearings with bearings (~$30), of course oil. I went ... After driving about three thousand, a big disappointment awaited me, I stood in the middle of the intersection (not a single gear turned on). Drove to the service station, began to understand. From anyone, but I did not expect this from the Germans ... It turned out that the burghers installed a tricky two-mass flywheel on models with a turbocharger. A dual-mass flywheel is not just a metal block, it is a whole spring-damping system. And so this system ordered to live long. In short, I wanted to buy a used flywheel (~$150), but everything I felt was, to put it mildly, worn out and not suitable for long-term operation. Then I decided to replace the entire clutch with a new, reliable and time-tested one - a clutch with a conventional flywheel (the whole set cost me $ 600).

In winter, it started up without problems even at -19 degrees. However, at -21 degrees it did not start (I did not dilute the solarium with kerosene). Later I found out that our winter diesel fuel is designed for -20 degrees, then paraffin.

In general, the car is reliable. In the cabin, everything is located quite ergonomically. The trunk is just huge (without the third row of seats). With the second row folded, the length of the luggage compartment is about 1600mm. The suspension is stiffer, at least than on the '97 Passat B5. (traveled, I know). But still, the car is also designed to transport goods, including (what, in vain is a large trunk, or something).

Riding the Sharan is a pleasure for me. Manageability is excellent. I don't see any problems with visibility.

Volkswagen Sharan, 1999

Wonderful car, everything is thought out to the smallest detail! Bought for a trip to the Crimea, a family of 4 people. We went great! We spent the night in the car, no one was constrained. The second row of seats fold neatly into the front seats, so you don't have to leave anything outside. There are no complaints about the engine either, it is turbocharged, the volume is not large 1.8 (economically) and the plane flies at a speed of 150 km / h easily, probably more, but I didn’t want to risk it. And I’ll add another review about the body, it is galvanized (this speaks for itself), despite its age, there is no rust, much less rot on the car. Overall very happy with the car!

Volkswagen Sharan, 2002

Great car for all occasions! Practical, comfortable, good to use! Very reliable! "The bearer of kings", he lives up to his big name! German is German! With proper operation - minimum costs and maximum pleasure from driving this car! Great, comfortable, family car for long trips!

Volkswagen Sharan, 2002

The dynamics are good. Manageability is excellent. Comfort is sufficient, the interior is spacious and comfortable, the trunk is very large and accessible. MOT every 10,000 km, relatively inexpensive, THIS IS MY 2nd Sharan (on Sharans since 2003 TDI), now I have already bought the 3rd Sharan of 2006 for myself. Pros: it's easy in the city, but on the highway it's just cool and easy, the costs are average (it doesn't hurt). Cons: the suspension is good, but it takes asphalt joints harshly.

Review of Volkswagen Sharan 1.9 TDI (Volkswagen Sharan) 2005

Equipment: power windows, heated mirrors, 12 airbags, ABS, ESP , heated seats, heated windshield and rear windows, automatic 2-zone climate control, trailer hook, Bluetooth factory tinted rear e count by 65%, on-board computer, standard navigation integrated into CD - radio, immobilizer and alarm.

The history of the car was easy to check, since there was only one mistress before me. She provided all the invoices, where, how and when the car was repaired and serviced. I sold it because for further use the car required significant financial investments (replacing brakes, shock absorbers, timing belt, filling the air conditioner). In Germany, cars are often sold on the eve of expensive maintenance work. For example, replacing a Sharan timing belt can cost around 1,000 euros, and it needs to be changed every 100,000 km. The Germans know how to count, so there are a lot of Sharans for sale at an attractive price, but with mileage approaching 100, 200, 300 thousand kilometers. I was lucky, I had the opportunity to carry out repairs in Estonia, which cost me more than 3 times cheaper than local rates.

Strengths:

  • Heaps of space
  • Low fuel consumption

Weak sides:

  • Lack of space under the hood increases the cost of repairs

Review of Volkswagen Sharan 1.9 TDI (Volkswagen Sharan) 2001

A car was purchased in the Republic of Belarus, but the car just about arrived from Germany before my possession. When buying, I gave preference to the quality and grooming of the car than the price. As a result, it was purchased for a little more than what was offered at that time in local markets and auto newspapers. Of course, I was immediately frightened by the price of this car, I decided not to rush and take a ride through the markets and ads, so that for the cost of my car already in the markets they offered it in a slightly modified body in 2005, that is, four years younger, but not a single car technically and grooming I did not like more than my Sharan. As a result, I became the proud owner of Sharan 2001.

Of course true or not, God only knows, the mileage on my car at the time of purchase was 125,000 km. After the purchase, I naturally replaced the oil, naturally synthetics, as well as the Knecht fuel filter. I immediately filled in Liquid Molly, bought on the local market, and the Knecht filter. During the inspection, it turned out that one steering tip needed to be replaced. Naturally, I did not change only it, but replaced two tips, two tie rods, stabilizer rods and stabilizer bushings, as they say in advance. These spare parts do not cost a lot of money, and you need to give time for repairs, and since I use the car for work purposes, idle time is money.

After 10,000 km, my oil pressure sensor began to give a signal that add oil, I eventually stop, let the car cool down, measure the oil level and it turns out that the level is excellent. This signal indicates in this case that it is time to change the oil in the engine. Although I can say that for synthetics 10,000 km is a small mileage. Of course, I understand that the more often you change the oil in the engine, the better, but still 10,000 km is not enough. After that I fill in Castrol Edge oil and a Bosch filter. As a result, I drive about 22,000 km on it until the next change, and yet this was not the case, as with Liquimolli oil.

Strengths:

  • Relative cheapness of spare parts and their availability

Weak sides:

  • In the cabin, the coating on the door handles is erased, it would be better if it did not exist.

Review of Volkswagen Sharan 1.8 5V Turbo (Volkswagen Sharan) 2003

1.8T. tiptronic, climate control, heating, 5 seats, xenon, cassette / changer.

further without fanaticism. bought on the market for 500 rubles. replacement of front bearings, pumps, belts (do not remove the face), internal combustion engine gaskets. Oil in the engine and gearbox twice. The car is not beaten, but there are many retouched chips. The service book is a hoax (there are many facts. I won’t list it. The cost of filling it out is from 100 bucks at the request of the seller. IMHO)

For the average uncle, there is a lot of space behind the wheel - the left elbow is on the window, the right one does not reach the armrest and vice versa, there is a field in the back. 9 people + belongings for swimming and we are going very fast, of course, we are not jumping from a place. The turbine whistles longer than usual. Consumption 92 about 12 on the highway. It is excellent on the road in any load, but it goes on the waves. Does not boil and even there is no creep to it at any power consumption. The review is decent, the interior is silent, except for ventilation at maximum.

Strengths:

  • Sat down and went

Weak sides:

  • All cars have them.

Review of Volkswagen Sharan (Volkswagen Sharan) 2001

Hi all! For a very long time I chose a car for the family, and so that the baby stroller could easily fit, and the bicycle, and the potatoes could be taken and it was not a shame to work. Began his choice with Sharan, of course, looked Ford Galaxy Seat Alhambra. I went to try on Zafira-1.2, Renault Scenic, Espace, Peugeot 307, 807, Mazda MPV, looked at Hyundai Santa Fe and Trajet. And I realized that the optimum for me in terms of transformation, convenience, price, availability of spare parts, is the Volkswagen Sharan with a 1.8T automatic transmission engine. This unit was purchased after a long search for a good option.

For a month of use, I will say that a used car always contains jambs and troubles, but the pleasure of driving and using is very great. High landing in the city is a great blessing, you can see the situation through the roof of the Zhiguli. The automatic transmission is very good and wise, much less nerves are spent in a traffic jam. Climate control and the rear stove is very good, the interior warmed up confidently in winter. The space inside the car amazes all fellow travelers and work colleagues, a 1x1x1 m box is easily placed in the trunk.

Built-in child seats make life a lot easier, the ground clearance is sufficient even in winter. Electronic differential lock helps in winter, but it burrows into the snow great, very heavy.

Strengths:

Weak sides:

Review of Volkswagen Sharan 1.9 TDI (Volkswagen Sharan) 2002

1.9TDI AutomatTiptronic, leather interior. Purchase January 2007, on the speedometer 110000km.

Immediately replaced: front brake pads (40 euros?), grenade protection (10 euros), GRU belt 40 euros, filters of course and wipers (40 euros, completely). Antifreeze immediately began to disappear (1 liter per 100 (one hundred) km), it turned out that when changing the oil, it got on the coolant hose and simply corroded it (the hose).

Impressions for 1 month. Uncomfortable back of the driver's seat, tired spine despite the adjustment of the stiffness of the seat. Squeaky (very!) front panel, although there is an option that the car was broken. The ventilation controls are buttons that you won’t get used to and they take a lot of attention while driving (the climate control screen lighting is dark blue, very hard to read). The CD changer with its cockroaches inside does not take discs the first time.

Strengths:

  • Lots, lots of space. Airflow for all 3 rows of seats (although for 2-3 only hododny in the roof, and warm in the legs).
  • Handling is good, you can turn around where necessary in one or two steps.
  • Light leather interior is beautiful!
  • Not a bad sound (changer with its cockroaches).

Weak sides:

  • Stole!!! Exactly one month later! I set the alarm, so they stole it in tow.

Review of Volkswagen Sharan (Volkswagen Sharan) 2002

Bought it in November 2002, took a complete set comfortline (2 pillows, radio gamma, climate control, power accessories, heated front seats), five-speed tiptronic automatic transmission, 1.9 turbodiesel engine.

The first 20-25 thousand passed with the replacement of pads, stabilizer struts. Then the breakdowns began on a larger scale (thank God, there was a guarantee). At 30 thousand, the turbine broke (more than $ 2 thousand). At 38, some chip on the box glitched, it hung in 3rd gear and didn’t switch anywhere else (replacing the chip - 3 weeks to wait for it from Germany and 45 thousand rubles). Then another replacement of the turbine (by the way, also wait for 3 weeks). Between all this, I changed the stabilizer struts and pads a couple of times. At 50 thousand, the wiper motor and the motor that supplies water to the windshield broke, I myself paid for this. The rear water motor, by the way, also broke 2 times.

Now 80 thousand, the turbine whistles, the service said that death would come soon, the suspension rattles (although 3 months ago I put everything new, native), the wiring is buggy, everything blinks like a Christmas tree, the drive of the front right wheel is broken. I was even tormented to list all this, how much more I have to invest — it’s scary to think (I can’t sell it, no one wants to buy it, although it is in perfect condition, if you don’t know these details).

Strengths:

  • Excellent review
  • Controllability
  • Traffic cops practically do not touch
  • 190 rides, you don’t even feel that this is a minivan, it confidently holds the road.

Weak sides:

  • Terribly unreliable, Requires only high-quality fuel.

Review of Volkswagen Sharan 1.9 TDI (Volkswagen Sharan) 2000

Bought a three-year Sharan. I've been using it for 2.5 years now. I passed 85 thousand (+ 85 thousand was on the speedometer when buying). I travel a lot, every day in the city. The car is comfortable and convenient. I took 1.9 TDII - obscenely economical. In the city 6.2 liters solariums in summer, 6.8 liters in winter. On the highway - 5.0 liters at a speed of 110-130 km / h. The handling is excellent. Comfort, climate - everything is great. True, it is not clear why there are two on-board computers. Plant even in -28 and it's diesel! True synthetic oil and solarium is good.

But the disadvantages of all these advantages nullify. Its chassis is clearly not designed for its weight. Something is constantly flying (although I drive almost alone in the car).

Changed: stabilizers - 4 pcs., shock absorbers - 2 pcs., steering rod ends - 2 pcs., steering rod assembly - 1 pc. Silent blocks (they are two different in a set) - 2 sets, thrust bearings - 2 pcs. Now the intermediate axle shaft has flown. I barely found the price to fly away - 330 USD. You can take for 200, but wait 2 weeks. There are simply no non-original ones. There is no used one either, a car with a rare engine. In addition, I changed the engine in the headlight (to adjust the level of the headlight) - 1 pc., Retracting 1 pc. Well, pads, freon, double timing, pump and battery do not count. The wires on the back door are cracked. Must be done periodically.
