The 2.0TSi turbo engine has one more small minus - unlike the 180-horsepower 2.0biTDi biturbodiesel, it cannot be combined with a manual gearbox and all-wheel drive at the same time. If you want "mechanics" - take front-wheel drive, if you need "Fir-Motion" - get a 7-speed DSG with two clutches.

It was such a car - and in the top-end Highline configuration, supplemented by a fair amount of custom equipment, that was at my disposal for a whole week. And to tell the truth, despite the advantage of 24 liters. With. over the diesel top engine, the gasoline TSi did not impress me very much. Perhaps because I expected too much. After all, the characteristics promised as much as two seconds of gain in acceleration to hundreds. Of course, on field tests with a stopwatch in hand, it will be possible to measure such figures, but everyday driving in the city is a completely different matter. Here, the advantage of a diesel engine in torque is more important - especially for a car whose weight with passengers and luggage exceeds two and a half tons. And when I just tried to test in practice the gain in maximum speed (197 km / h versus 188), the Vladimir policemen joyfully received me: “Where are we in a hurry?”

In all other respects the machines are equal. In any case, you will get an exceptionally comfortable, comfortable, roomy and carefully finished car for travel for 6-7 people. We described all its advantages, and more than once. There are a few downsides as well. The huge and heavy back door is not easy to open even for a man, and the ingeniously folding table and swivel chairs will require considerable effort. On expensive 18-inch wheels, the smoothness of the ride leaves much to be desired - this became especially noticeable on the road from Vladimir to Pereslavl. A gasoline engine is significantly more expensive when buying - the difference ranges from 36,200 rubles in the Panamericana version to 84,400 in Comfortline-Long and Life-Long trim levels - and will require more fuel costs during operation. The seven-seat car arrived with a top-end 2-liter 180-horsepower biturbo diesel engine, a 7-speed DSG sequential “robot” and all-wheel drive. The “German”, which was recently launched at the Volkswagen plant in Kaluga, seemed to flaunt a noble burgundy body color, chrome moldings, LED optics, an electric rear lift and two sliding side doors, as well as an adaptive DCC suspension, which was not offered for the previous generation car. The list of on-board equipment responsible for comfort and safety stretched over two pages of small text.

Already at the beginning of the test of the luxury modification, I was convinced that there is a difference between a van and a van, even when it comes to the high-end Multivan family. Firstly, that a special atmosphere of real comfort has been created inside the Highline version. More precisely, immersion in the world of comfort and attention to detail begins even before entering the salon. To let colleagues inside the car, I press the button on the key, forcing the sliding sash to open - conveniently and quickly. And having closed from the inside, I draw your attention to the fact that the rumble of the street almost does not make its way into the salon: the car in this rich configuration is equipped with special glazing - tinted, thickened, with improved sound insulation.

In terms of decorative delights, the hero of our test also surpasses the "younger" modifications. In fact, elements from the arsenal of premium cars are involved in the design. For example, the front panel is trimmed with elegant plastic inserts in piano lacquer and aluminum look, there are stainless steel linings in the doorways, and the entire floor surface is sheathed with wear-resistant carpet. With a dark front panel, the ceiling panel and beige leather chairs are perfectly combined. Finally, the Multivan Highline uses a higher percentage of soft polymers than the entry-level models, which of course improves the tactile feel.

It is also significant that you can get behind the wheel of such a van faster and more comfortably than in the salons of colleagues in the shop. The driver's seat has 12 electric adjustments, and in our case there were also three settings memory cells. Between a pair of second-row seats there is a retractable table that slides longitudinally or - if necessary - is completely dismantled. The same manipulation can be done with the seats of the two rear rows. Separate seats in the middle row turn 180 degrees. I note that it has become easier to carry out such a rearrangement in the cabin thanks to the modernization of the rail guide system in the floor.

Finally, Multivan Highline will give odds to both other members of the family and competitors in terms of electronic equipment. The test car boasted, in particular, a multimedia unit with Russified navigation, a Wi Fi access point, voice control, a speakerphone and a rear view camera, the ability to “mirror” the screens of Andorid and Apple mobile devices (when connected via a USB cable), as well as a system blind spot control, adaptive optics (automatically turns on and off high beam headlights), front and rear parking sensors, rain and light sensors and an autonomous water heater with a programmable timer.

Its scheme has not fundamentally changed: like most crossovers, on a good surface, the front wheels are leading, but when they slip, the Haldex clutch connects the rear ones. And now, after the transition from the fourth generation Haldex coupling to Haldex 5, the transfer of traction is noticeably faster than before.

The steering wheel of the "German" remained just as light and informative, as well as a little more than we would like, relaxed in the "zero". The reactions of the van to control actions are nevertheless quick and adequate, unlike many competitors, in deep turns the steering wheel does not need to be “wound”. Acceleration is powerful over a wide range of speeds. The robotic transmission works so delicately that you hardly notice the shifts. In Drive mode, the pause before changing gears is slightly longer than in "sports", but the car's reactions to "gas" are smoother. But if there are passengers in the cabin, then it is better not to abuse the “sports” settings.

An adaptive suspension that allows you to vary the stiffness of the shock absorbers is also an absolute blessing - outside the city, when high-quality asphalt replaces a broken canvas and primer, it is logical to set “comfortable” settings for the chassis. Conversely, in a bunch of turns, the Multivan behaves more agile when the shock absorbers are clamped. And the big Volkswagen doesn't veer off course in strong crosswinds.

The dynamic light control system provides optimal illumination of the road. By the way, the automatic inclusion of the "far" is regulated by a video camera that tracks cars in the oncoming and passing directions. The Side Assist assistant, which tracks cars in the dead zone, also turned out to be very useful. The system, run-in on other Volkswagen models, obviously did not become superfluous for the Multivan with its impressive dimensions.

Of course, a luxury minibus, especially with new options, will cost more than the base Multivan, which is offered from 2,364,100 rubles. The starting price of the car in the Highline configuration is 3,493,100 rubles, and the car that we have chosen for testing already costs 5,135,100 rubles. It's a lot of money, though not sky-high, especially considering that this Multivan plays in the big leagues in terms of comfort, handling, electronics and safety. Ultimately, it's good that the sixth generation van, like its predecessor, can be different - for every budget and taste.
