Given the low power of the Rafik engines, it is possible to break something in the transmission only with great skill. Of the resource breakdowns, here you can usually find only the wear of the cardan shaft bearings and the wear of the CV joints.

The cardan shaft usually requires attention after a hundred or one and a half thousand runs, and the constant velocity joints are conditionally “eternal”: they fail if the cover and lubricant are damaged or not replaced in time, or after mechanical damage. Increased backlash at the front hinges usually appear only after 200-250 thousand kilometers.

An angle gearbox with a differential, also known as a rear axle power take-off or simply a transfer case, is quite an expensive thing. But at the same time, it is reliable. Problems usually appear if you miss the oil level or damage the seals. A new gearbox costs from 120 thousand rubles, but fortunately, buying not a new one, but alive, will not be a problem. Nevertheless, regular checks for smudges and the presence of oil are required.

In front-wheel drive vehicles, the transmission is even simpler, there are no cardan shafts, no transfer case, no rear gearbox. CV joints with a 1.8 liter engine do not experience any special overloads and live for a long time.

Cars with manual transmission are relatively rare, the bulk of the RAV 4 has an automatic transmission. But still, we note that the “mechanics” are without surprises, it has a large resource, especially if you do not overload the synchronizers with quick switching and change the oil on time.

As for the automatic transmission, it is simply excellent here. Boxes of the U 140 series have long earned the right to be called one of the best “automatic machines”. Of course, it has only four steps, albeit with electronic control, but on a relatively “big-headed” car, a multi-speed automatic transmission does not provide significant fuel savings in highway modes. And in the urban cycle, partial blocking of the gas turbine engine and active engine braking allow you to have quite acceptable fuel consumption. Do not pay attention to the passport consumption data, it still turns out about fifteen liters per hundred, only the installation of a variator could reduce it by another one and a half to two liters.

This wonderful U 140 also has “weak points”, these are the front planetary gear and the rear cover. But with a timely oil change in the box, the health of the electronics and the absence of overheating, the problems of these nodes can only be encountered with runs over 300-350 thousand kilometers, if not later. Unless with 3.0-3.3 engines on Lexus, the numbers can be a little less impressive.

At maximum runs, it breaks the drum seat due to an unsuccessful Teflon compression ring. If owners regularly abuse peppy starts, the gas turbine engine blocking pads can wear out up to a mileage of 200,000.

The most common automatic transmission trouble on the second generation RAV 4 was a malfunction of the gearbox control unit. Mainly due to the unreliability of the contacts due to the factory "cold soldering", but there are also damage to the tracks due to vibrations, and firmware failures.

Motors

The main engines of 2.0 and 2.4 liters found on the Toyota RAV 4 are our old friends 1AZ -FE and 2AZ -FE, which I already wrote about, but the 1.8 engine is a completely different series engine, 1ZZ - F.E. In addition, there are also diesel engines of the 1CD-FTV series.

Motors 1AZ -FE and 2AZ -FE differ only in displacement, they are exactly the same in operation.

The first series of these engines were distinguished by one unpleasant feature: they had a “floating” thread in the cylinder block. As a result, the cylinder head “raised” and the operation of the gas joint was disrupted, the cylinder head gasket “blew out”. For cars with high mileage, this problem has most likely already been solved, and within the framework of the revocable company, the thread was strengthened by installing a bushing, the same is done in case of repair. The defect is especially pronounced during overheating, and they happen.

The radiators on these machines are quite weak, prone to losing honeycombs, but the main culprit for leaks and overheating is the pumps. You need to change it every 50 thousand mileage, even if you put the original spare part every time. When buying a non-original one, look at the configuration of the blades: too simple designs with a small impeller size may not ensure the normal operation of the 2.4 liter engine cooling system.

The not very successful and reliable design of the collector on pre-styling machines is prone to chipping of the catalyst during cold starts and overheating in the summer. In addition, there are four oxygen sensors in this case, and they are not very reliable, which greatly increases the likelihood of failure. After restyling on European cars, the manifold has changed, the resource has grown, there are only two lambdas left. But still, after 200-250 thousand kilometers, it can begin to crumble and can even damage the piston group. And so I strongly recommend constantly monitoring his condition.


The troubles associated with oil leaks, both through the oil pressure sensor on the block, and through a not particularly successful ventilation system, also happen regularly. Along the way, the throttle valve suffers, which quickly becomes clogged, and the intake manifold, literally overgrown with deposits from the inside. Therefore, when running over two hundred thousand kilometers, it is better not only to clean the throttle valve and the crankcase ventilation system, but also to remove and clean the entire intake. It is better to do this with checking and replacing all seals, from nozzle rings to intake pipes. Rubber elements become unusable, causing the intake to become leaky.

Oiling the DMRV is a separate problem: it is not very well located and gets dirty. If the engine is unstable, cleaning it can help, but with high mileage and irregular maintenance, this will no longer help, and it will have to be changed.

The timing chain resource ranges from 150 to 250-300 thousand kilometers, and this is an excellent indicator for modern engines. Occasionally, the phase shifter may not live up to such runs, but the hydraulic tensioner on these engines can be called a “consumable”. Its replacement is required every 50-60 thousand kilometers. Fortunately, these are not particularly expensive parts.

If the motor began to run noisier, then it may be time to adjust the valves, there are no hydraulic lifters. Also check the chain.

The piston group is not prone to coking, and if you do not forget to change the oil and do not overheat the engine, then it will pass more than 300 thousand kilometers (and sometimes even 500).

In general, AZ-FE is an excellent example of a reliable motor that does not annoy with breakdowns during operation. Of course, in many respects such a large resource is due to a small maintenance interval of 10 thousand kilometers. But even in the USA, where the attitude to routine maintenance is different, these motors run great.


The 1.8 liter motor of the 1ZZ -FE series is noticeably different from the "older ones". I don't tend to fall into Toyota hate, but this is one of the most unfortunate Toyota engines of the turn of the century.

The engine appeared back in 1998, but until 2002, manufacturers could not (or did not want to) fix the most obvious drawback - the oil burner of the piston group. The rings were stuck due to too small oil drain holes in the piston. The thin-walled cast-iron sleeve, in turn, wears out easily due to stuck rings. After 2003, the piston group was replaced, but the chances of meeting an “oily” motor remain.

Some of the engines were repaired "collectively": by drilling holes in the piston or replacing pistons without replacing the sleeve. And now repairs with "tossing" the rings are carried out regularly, as soon as the oil consumption reaches a liter or two per thousand kilometers.

The “little things” in the face of a dirty throttle, flying coils, bad engine mounts, oil leaks and other things have not gone away. And this is one of the most common Toyota engines in the "middle" class! Not surprisingly, the impact on the image was severe, and the ZZ series is still remembered today. And I will only advise you to refuse to buy a car with such an engine, especially since it will definitely be front-wheel drive.

Diesel Rafik is also better not to buy, even if you can get free diesel fuel. The 1CD-FTV motor, in addition to the capricious fuel equipment, is also distinguished by the rare “fragility” of the cylinder head: the partitions between the valves crack easily and naturally after a long high load or simply from operation on high-sulphur diesel fuel. The timing belt turned out to be capricious, which is similar to death for a diesel engine. The scheduled replacement interval is noticeably overestimated, it is recommended to change it more than once every 150 thousand, but three times more often if you do not want to change the motor assembly.


The electric EGR is also far from an engineering masterpiece, so its failure and the intake manifold clogged to zero are common. A variable geometry turbine is very expensive and requires regular cleaning of the mechanism. Injectors with an electro-hydraulic drive are also expensive and very capricious about fuel. If I haven’t convinced you, read the “diesel” forums, complaints about this engine are found regularly. Heavy-fuel engines from Toyota are much less successful than gasoline ones.

Summary

If you want reliability, then the RAV 4 is a good choice. And he is good not only in the city, "Rafik" can do a lot off-road, especially with a skilled driver behind the wheel. True, the handling with permanent all-wheel drive is quite specific. There was an ESP system in the options list, and it is better to look for a car with it.

This is the first diesel engine installed on the RAV4, it was inferior to its gasoline counterparts in dynamics, but was more high-torque off-road. Diesel fuel consumption was 9.9 liters in the city and 6.1 on the highway.

Gasoline units could be equipped with both mechanics and automatic from the first generation of the car, only mechanics were installed on diesel.

  • a new diesel unit with a volume of 2.2 liters with a power of 136 hp. (310 Nm) and 177 hp (400 Nm), (turbo). The younger non-supercharged version was distinguished by good performance: acceleration to 100 km / h took 10.5 s, and consumption was only 8.1 liters in the city (5.6 liters on the highway).
