At the end of September, it is already chilly in the Murmansk region. At night, the temperature is around zero, and this is the norm for the Arctic. But when you spend the night in a tent on the shore of the Barents Sea, it seems that it is even colder outside the window (or rather, behind the awning). Tooth does not fit. And just as I fell asleep, something rumbling and spewing clouds of smoke drove up to our tent camp. BTR! The arrived soldiers reported that sudden exercises were announced on the Middle Peninsula, and therefore we need to stay closer to the coast - self-propelled artillery installations will fire in the center.

I didn't want to sleep at all, and not only me. We turn the camp away from sin and set off on the route ahead of schedule. There are eleven updated UAZs in our column. I bypass - this is already a passed stage (ZR, No. 10, 2018). I am only interested in, which I have not been able to ride before.

Thanks to the handrails in the doorways, getting into the cabin has become convenient. There are no other visible changes to the interior. Although further refinement suggests itself. A two-stage (or better - three-) heated seats would not hurt. The current one works on the principle of "on / off" and fries like crazy. The climate control is the same: you set it to 21° - cool, 22° - hot. If I had complained about this to the military on that armored personnel carrier, they would have considered me a sissy. But the buyer who paid 1,100,000 rubles for a car has the right to demand correct work even in small things.

I squeeze the clutch: when compared with the Patriot tested in the summer, it is much easier to push the pedal. The moves of the 5-speed mechanics are just as short, the selectivity is on top. I remember very well that on the Patriot the gearbox lever did not vibrate - thanks to the introduced intermediate damper. Here it is noticeably itchy. It looks like the old lever is installed on the test machine.

There are no good asphalt roads in these parts and never have been. In Soviet times, there were many military camps here (now they are abandoned), and there were army Urals and Ulyanovsk "goats".

Pickup here is like a fish in water. It crosses half-meter fords with defiant ease, it climbs the hills strewn with cobblestones without any problems - it never had to go into the lower register of the handout (its reduction factor is still 2.542). As well as to use the forced rear wheel lock. On the climbs, the temporary hold on the slope was very useful, which makes it great to start off. Here are just a clearance of 210 mm for an all-terrain vehicle is not enough: every now and then you beat the gearbox against the stones, effectively striking sparks. This show manages without consequences, however, it would not hurt to increase the clearance to 220-230 mm. According to the “geometry”, the Pickup is inferior to the usual Patriot: the rear overhang is longer, and the exit angle is 21 ° versus 30 °. So you have to be careful about the bends.



But before the stones, the Patriots had to be careful, shod in tires with a dimension of 245/60 R18. Breaking through these is a trifling matter! Constantly stopped to change shoes. They put other tires on the Pickup - 235/70 R16, and thank God. They are noticeably more resistant to cuts and absorb fines better.

Shots in the fog

The upgraded ZMZ Pro motor proved to be excellent. Compared to the previous version, the compression ratio was increased, the cylinder head was strengthened, heat-resistant alloy pistons were installed (taking into account the future appearance of the version with LPG) and a two-row chain. Power has increased from 135 to 150 hp, and torque - from 217 to 235 Nm. But more importantly, the thrust peak is shifted to the low-speed zone. Thanks to this, even on heavy off-road, you can drive without touching the accelerator - the engine pulls confidently at 800 rpm. Almost diesel character! For an all-terrain vehicle, it fits perfectly. By the way, next year UAZs will have compression-powered engines. Moreover, these will be imported units, but the manufacturer is still kept secret.

Climbing one of the peaks, I heard a strong roar: in the foggy distance I saw a battery of self-propelled guns, synchronously beating in the direction of the center of the peninsula. Power! I go further, but my head is spinning: if only they don’t start practicing shooting at moving targets ... Willy-nilly, I accelerate.




At a fast pace and on a broken road, it became unpleasant to throw up the tail of the car. In the Patriot at the same speed, there is no particular deterioration in comfort. What's the matter? The answer was found under the belly of the truck. The rear suspension of the Pickup is the same: there are four leaves in the springs (the Patriot has two of them) and an old anti-roll bar (the bar thickness was reduced from 21 to 18 mm for the Patriot). For a cargo-oriented car that can carry 725 kg, this is justified. They threw wheels into the body - we went softer. However, squeaks on bumps did not disappear, although with a mileage of 900 km there should be no extraneous noise at all.

The front suspension has undergone the same transformations as the Patriot one. The pickup truck received open steering knuckles, which made it possible to radically reduce the turning radius by 0.93 meters. In addition, both kingpins take the vertical load in them (earlier - only the lower one), which should increase reliability. The unit is not subject to lubrication, but it still needs periodic adjustment of the axial clearance. For the sake of improved handling, the castor was increased from 3 to 3.5 °. Indeed, driving performance on asphalt has become much better. True, the “littered” corner also has the opposite effect: the steering wheel hits harder on bumps. To compensate for this, Ulyanovsk installed a steering damper. With him, the steering wheel remained “quiet” even on a stone-strewn road.

After ten minutes of godless shaking, the wheels on the cargo platform unlatched and began to fly around the compartment, but I didn’t even feel it. That's what a cargo platform separated from the cab means - in a station wagon they would arrange Stalingrad! The UAZ cargo platform is shorter than that of foreign classmates, however, for the everyday needs of a conventional fisher-hunter, the capabilities of the Pickup are enough for the eyes. And an ATV or a snowmobile will not fit in the mentioned foreign cars either.

Perhaps the main operational disadvantage is high fuel consumption. Off-road, the Pickup burns about 17 l / 100 km, and on the highway it requires at least 12 liters per hundred. That's a lot for a four-cylinder car. The ability to digest 92nd gasoline is little consolation. The transition to a six-speed mechanics would help reduce consumption: it will allow you to “drop” the engine speed at main speeds. But the Ulyanovsk residents do not even stutter about such a box. But next spring. Consumption, of course, will not decrease, but comfort and status will be added.

Until recently, UAZs were associated with me, if not with a tent, then with a rickety rural house without amenities. Over the past five years, a solid repair has been made in it: a decent cladding has been installed, the roof has been shifted, and sewerage has been installed. It remains to reduce heating costs, and you will want to live in this house.

Not so long ago, the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant presented its next novelty - UAZ Pickup 2017-2018 in a new body (photo, equipment, specifications, prices, video and test drive). In fact, this is the same Patriot model, only this type of body has a greater carrying capacity.

The only thing, according to both the company and the owners of new pickups, finishing materials, and in general the very quality of assembly and fitting of elements, has increased significantly, compared even with its predecessor.

Regarding the steering wheel and speedometer panel, everything is the same as before. The steering wheel does not have any set of options, the speedometer is classic with two "wells" and a small on-board computer, in which even with sun glare you can see all the information.

The central unit has changed only with the monitor, which is still on the button control, but larger in size. The structure is classical, under the screen is the necessary block of the stove or air conditioner.

As for the seats, even the upholstery has not changed, not to mention the shape of the seats. There is still no significant support, since the possibilities of adjustments have been slightly expanded, but otherwise no positive is noted anymore. In terms of capacity, the back row is huge, even three tall riders can comfortably accommodate.

The design, as it should be for an SUV, is frame, there are no distinguishing features from its predecessor. The old suspension is completely dependent, in front through springs and levers, in the back according to the principle of little leaf spring.
