Volvo XC90 D5. Price: 1 574 100 rubles. On sale: since October 2007.

. We appreciated the advantages and disadvantages of the XC90 D5 during the rally from Arkhangelsk to Moscow, timed to coincide with the “diesel coming”.

Like both Swedish station wagons, the diesel XC90 is powered by a Volvo D5 five-cylinder in-line engine with a displacement of 2.4 liters. Thanks to a new electronic control unit and a modified turbine with variable geometry blades, the aluminum motor produces 185 hp. At the same time, the XC90 engine management system is tuned in such a way that it not only provides the highest power characteristics with minimal fuel consumption, but also artificially lowers the upper limit of engine speed from 6000 (as on front-wheel drive station wagons) to 5000 min-1. The red zone generally begins at 4500 min-1. As a result, an extra sector is cut off, and the range of the motor operation narrows closer to the fork from 1500 to 2700 min-1. In this zone, a maximum torque of 400 Nm is achieved.

In terms of environmental friendliness, Swedish diesel will give odds to many competitors. Even in the basic configuration of the Russian market, the engine is equipped with a maintenance-free particulate filter with a catalytic base made of precious metals. This allows all D5 diesel vehicles delivered to Russia to meet the strict Euro 4 standards. In addition, almost all diesel Volvos delivered to Russia (starting with the cheapest Optima package) will be equipped with a preheater with a timer. On a frosty winter morning, this option will greatly facilitate the life of a Russian driver. In general, Volvo paid special attention to the operation of diesel engines at low temperatures. Mathematical calculation of the cross section of the fuel line made it possible to reduce the possibility of paraffin crystallization practically to nothing. Together with a multi-level filter and fuel line heating system, this allows the Swedish diesel engine to start easily even at -37ºС.

In general, Volvo has been preparing for the Russian debut of its diesel engines for almost a year and a half. All this time, to check the quality of fuel, D5 engines were run in on Russian roads. Periodically, "Russified Swedes" were sent to a factory in Gothenburg for "medical examination" and adaptation to Russian conditions. As a result, the quality of Russian fuel was found to be satisfactory. But at the same time, Volvo engineers made a very unexpected verdict: it is better to refuel away from Moscow and the Moscow region. As it turned out, as we get closer to the Russian capital, the quality of Russian diesel fuel is noticeably declining.

Among other advantages of the D5, the rally "From Arkhangelsk to Arkhangelskoye" was intended to demonstrate the unpretentiousness of Volvo engines to Russian fuel. Therefore, on the way to Moscow, for the purity of the experiment, we specially refueled at the dispensers of three different oil companies. And there were no questions about the quality of fuel. The Swedish engine consumes Russian diesel fuel for a sweet soul, but by no means with bestial appetite. With a slightly more economical ride, 1,300 km to Moscow could be overcome on just two 65-liter tanks: Volvo's declared consumption in the combined cycle is 9 liters per 100 km, but since we walked most of the distance at speeds over 120 km / h, the engine of our The XC90 with a six-speed automatic consumed an average of 11.4 liters per hundred. At the same time, the consumption of the gasoline XC90 2.5T (taken on a run specifically for fuel consumption comparison) turned out to be one and a half times higher - more than 17 l / 100 km.

The Kholmogory track is the best suited for automotive testing. It seems that you find yourself on a multi-kilometer auto-polygon with different types of coverage. Occasionally come across segments smooth as glass of fresh asphalt. But the basis of the Arkhangelsk tract is made up of hastily patched bumpy roads that shake out the soul, which now and then alternate with sections with shallow potholes that are practically harmless for tires. The Volvo's suspension feels a bit stiff on this kind of surface, and despite the wide track, the short XC90 has to be caught constantly. Although, on the other hand, at a speed of 150 km / h on a similar road, except for tests, no one drives.

The path of Lomonosov

Nine cars came to the start of the rally in Arkhangelsk. In addition to seven diesel engines, two Volvos with gasoline engines were taken on the trip: XC90 2.5T and XC70 3.2. The next day, having overcome more than 1300 km, all nine Volvos successfully finished in the Arkhangelskoye estate near Moscow. The average fuel consumption for diesel cars was 11 liters per 100 km, for gasoline - 17.

It is noteworthy that the route of the rally "From Arkhangelsk to Arkhangelskoye", passing through Kholmogory, Velsk, Vologda and Yaroslavl, almost exactly repeated the path that Mikhailo Vasilyevich Lomonosov went to Moscow in 1730. And it is doubly symbolic that on the eve of the 300th anniversary of the great Russian scientist, this path was made precisely at the wheel of Swedish cars! After all, it was the Royal Swedish Academy in 1760 that was the first in Europe to grant Lomonosov the degree of academician. So two and a half centuries ago, the Swedes were the first to recognize the talent of a Russian scientist. And 250 years later, his native Kholmogory became the starting point for the Russian recognition of Swedish cars with diesel engines.

Driving

The steering wheel, like most SUVs, is somewhat empty, but it is impossible to find fault with the automatic transmission. No extra shifts or jerks. Everything is very clear and reasonable.

Salon

A slightly outdated but practical design in January 2008 will be complemented by a retractable navigation system monitor at the top of the center console.

Comfort

The small vibrations inherent in diesel engines on the steering wheel and pedals are, of course, present, but in general the engine runs softly and quite quietly.

Safety

The car is far from young, but passive safety is at a very high level, traditional for Volvo.

Price

On average, the XC90 with a diesel engine (from 1,444,800 rubles) is $1,500 cheaper than a gasoline one in a similar configuration, not to mention huge fuel savings.

Advantages and disadvantages

Low fuel consumption, high environmental friendliness and a wide rev range with maximum torque.

The accelerator pedal has noticeable idling.

Our opinion

Solid appearance and low fuel consumption, coupled with good performance, make the diesel Volvo XC90 a real find for the Russian market, especially the regional one. The car is definitely worth the money they ask for it. Moreover, this is one of the best family cars, and if the family is inclined to save money, then diesel Volvo is the right option.

For a long time I did not dare to start this description, because it is very difficult to talk about things that, by definition, are ideal, but are not clear to everyone and not immediately. How to talk about the impression received in the best concert hall from listening to Vivaldi performed by the von Karajan orchestra? How to describe the feeling of flying a Gulfstream 650? Or a winter evening by the fireplace in a cozy and beautiful house on the lake, in the best company, while huge snowflakes silently fall outside the window?

That's how it is here. This car is not what we are used to. There was simply nothing like this before. She can't be compared to her classmates, it's just a different kung fu. In fairness, there are also enough shortcomings in it - it is, of course, not ideal. Just talking in the usual way of a test drive about the new XC90 does not work.

Volvo has always been different. Premium, but a bit out of the ordinary. While the "big German three" were arguing who was more prestigious, richer, more athletic, the Swedes were working with maniacal concentration on safety and comfort inside. At some point, this even stamped family and old age on the brand, but in the 90s and 2000s, with the launch of "charged" variants and a breakthrough in design, the brand became much younger.

The main thing - "Volvo" is always authentic and recognizable. Whether it's the old 240, the S80, which is timeless in any body, or the new XC90, we recognize it in the stream by the headlights, by the grille, by the characteristic "shoulder" on the body, by laconic strokes and lines.

Anyone interested in cars has probably already read the XC90 tests with a bunch of petty nitpicks in various publications. So, don't believe. From the first moment you sit in this car - the little things stop worrying. Quietness, comfort, beautiful interior with interesting details, but without pretentiousness. The music sounds pleasant, somewhere in the depths, a high-torque diesel engine is barely audible. The streets are passing by, and it feels like the car was designed for you personally - everything is in place, everything is convenient, everything is immediately clear.

Everyone who went to the Volvo knows that it is always "at home" here and the back never gets numb.

If I were buying an XC90, I would opt for the light trim. But even with black and brown it is very comfortable. Everything that is possible is sheathed in leather, and the rest is wood, moreover, matte, pleasant to the touch. The aroma in the cabin is indescribable. And very nice lighting at night.

There are very few buttons and knobs in the cabin. At hand is the original shifter for turning on the engine, as if from a Cartier showcase; a drum for changing the driving mode, and a neat gear selector with a pleasant backlight. Several buttons on the steering wheel and on the steering column switches, buttons on the door - power windows, mirrors, seat memory. On the center console - only the main control of "music", "emergency gang" and heating.

The fact is that all the control of a million different systems is given to a huge "tablet" in the center of the panel, in which the proprietary Sensus system lives. The interface is intuitive, understands "paging", swipes, you can drag large icons to your liking. If you learned how to use an iPad without prompting, then it will be even easier. On the second day, I quickly and accurately found the necessary settings, menus and functions. The screen can also be used with gloves, and the kit comes with a cute cloth to wipe the display :)

Probably, those who buy such a Volvo do not eat shawarma in the car, and they wash their hands often, so the display will not be stained. In general, the car is clearly not for people who love mess and clutter. I personally did not even want to put a radar detector and a telephone on the panel - the interior is so finished that foreign elements in it are like a speck in the eye.

Directly in front of the driver is a "virtual" instrument panel. Volvo is one of the pioneers in this regard, there is not a single "analog" scale or arrow here - the instruments are "drawn" on a huge matte display. Of course, you can choose the style and colors of the display, the output of variable data, the type of on-board computer, navigation, and more. There is also a head-up display right in front of the eye, showing the main data right on the field of view, as if hanging in the air above the hood. In addition to the speed and tips of the navigator, road signs are also shown there, which are valid at a particular point in the journey. They are read and recognized by a separate camera so that the driver always knows the current restrictions.

You can talk about the "bells and whistles" for a very long time, the list of options will take more than one page. The main thing that impressed me personally was the feeling of a "live" assistant that unobtrusively makes life easier. Got a WhatsApp message or need to take a photo? Not a problem, he will "steer" for you for a few seconds, not allowing you to "drive" somewhere or leave the lane even in a turn. In a traffic jam, it will follow the car in front, gently accelerating and braking when necessary. On the track, even more so. He will not let you change into someone, "resting" on the steering wheel and prompting with lights. And in the event of a possible collision - a red light flashes before his eyes, the belts are tightened, as if he was saying "watch out"! Well, if you overslept it too, he will urgently brake himself.

It's happened before, I've seen it all on the XC70 and V40XC, but here the work seemed more polished and less noticeable, just like you have an extra pair of eyes, hands and ears. The disadvantage is that when you then sit behind the wheel of an ordinary car, you can not immediately understand that you are deprived of this help, and after hesitating, do something. To good - you quickly get used to it.

Among other interesting features - the machine is always connected to the Internet. It has its own SIM card and 4G, this allows you to get navigation with traffic jams, online radio, emergency assistance and implement remote communication with the car. The Volvo On Call application is installed on the smartphone, and from anywhere in the world you can find out where the car is, how many degrees it is inside and outside, how much fuel it has, start heating, check if the doors are closed.

For passengers, too, everything is thought out. Comfortable seats (all with heating), huge legroom and overhead space, rear climate control, retractable curtains, a table, a 220V outlet, and a huge transparent ceiling from above through which you can see the sky.

The passenger sitting in front (as well as the driver) has access to a built-in and varied massage :) Very relaxing on a long journey. Well, as I said about the seats - very comfortable. Everything is adjustable: the width, the severity of the lateral support, the length of the pillow under the knees, the angle of inclination, the elasticity in the lower back, a million settings.

An excellent Bowers&Wilkins class Hi-End audio system works for all the cabin occupants (acoustics of this particular brand are installed, for example, at the Abbey Road studio). It is based on a 12-channel Harman amplifier for 1400 W, 19 speakers, of which 7 are tweeters, 7 are midrange. 4 midbass and subwoofer.

We checked - any music sounds great, from Dimmu Borgir and Skrillex to Joe Dassin and, of course, The Beatles. For the classics, there is a special sound processor setting - the profile of the concert hall of the Gothenburg Philharmonic. But in general, there are surprisingly few settings. Apparently, everything is already set up as it should, and there is simply no need to poke the equalizer.

Separately, I would like to note the spaciousness, a huge trunk (of course, with an electric drive) and a huge variety of all sorts of niches, drawers and hiding places. The entire "traveler's set" lay under the floor of the trunk - there is a "double bottom", 4 rather big suitcases, a couple of large bags and several bags of food lay down on top. And closed with a regular curtain.

The question remains - well, how does it all go? Here the answer is simple - 225 high-torque diesel horses per two tons of weight through an eight-speed "automatic" - that's what you need. There is no need for the driver of such a car to tear from a traffic light, and overtaking on the highway is easy and natural. Acceleration does not make you lose consciousness, but it is always enough. The average consumption for 3000 km in mixed conditions is 7.5 liters per hundred.

Of course, there is a question about the motor. 2 turbocharged liters, 225 forces are removed from them .. how long will it live? Let's hope for the engineering skills of the Swedish designers, but I would advise the owners to change the oil twice as often as necessary, and refuel only at the most proven gas stations.

In terms of handling: everything is calm, predictable, at ease. The machine is obedient, but not sharp. You don’t get tired of it, but of course, in high-speed ligaments, the mass and height of the car are felt. It's not a sports car, but you can't call it a roll either - handling and sensitivity is exactly what you expect from this car. Tight, comfortable, clear. You can customize the steering effort, brake responsiveness and ease of the gas pedal, but it's best to put the "comfort" mode and just enjoy.

On the suspension, everything is not so clear. On the one hand, the adjustable air suspension is very comfortable and resilient. But on seriously broken roads, it shakes decently, and this sudden exit from the “comfort zone” also hits the nerves. It’s frankly a pity to kill a car on potholes! It's probably because of the huge wheels (tyres 275/45 R20). I would leave the basic 18th wheels, for Russian realities this is more justified. But small irregularities such as tram rails or joints on bridges fly by unnoticed - apparently, the suspension is infused for codobins no more than European paving stones, and here it is "on top".

Of course, we didn’t test the cross-country ability :) Yes, the air suspension allows you to raise the car, the ground clearance is high, but .. why? Who would think of kneading dirt on such a machine?

It will pass on a country dirt road, even on a snowy one, that is, if you go to the country house or snowboard in winter, everything is in order, but there are other cars for mud. Power is transmitted to the rear axle through a very fast preloaded Haldex clutch of the fifth generation, the same is found on many Audi and VW, this is a good and proven solution.

The main disadvantage of this car is the price! The previous generation cost much less, and perhaps Volvo should have just come up with a different name for this model - XC120, for example)) Because the car is completely different, and plays a higher class. The basic version costs more than 3 million rubles, our version Volvo XC90 D5 pull on four and a half! Tuareg is far behind, next - Audi Q7 and BMW X5 and slightly more expensive - Toyota Land Cruiser 200.

And here's something to think about. Firstly, the XC90, with relatively equal trim levels, is still slightly more affordable than direct competitors. Secondly, to be honest - a week after the test, I got into the Q7 and was a little taken aback - but why are they asking so much for it? Materials, interior design, even sound insulation ... everything is simpler, much simpler. Thirdly, I think the hijacking statistics here will clearly be in favor of Volvo, which means the cost of comprehensive insurance and irreplaceable nerve cells.

It's not "maximum". This is the speed at which you can talk in a relaxed way on pleasant topics, under the soft background of beautiful music.

But the main thing is different. It's just not competitive. The same person would not consider buying an XC90 and say an X5. The new Volvo is not a movie for everyone. The owner of this car, for all its success and wealth, does not care about show-offs, the concept of "how much rush", tinsel and the amount of chrome. He has peace in his soul, everything is good and right, he enjoys beautiful, aesthetic things and knows a lot about big trips. The XC90 is designed for those who are inside, not outside.

Year of issue: 2015

Engine: 2.0 (228 HP) Checkpoint: A8

I've been waiting for him for three years. Before him, all my cars are Japanese SUVs. I wished "ninety" when I traveled to the XC60 wife's car and waited for the premiere.

Bought in November 2015, when the dollar jumped up. He kept the money for the down payment of 50% in dollars, so he won well. The rest of the cost was taken over by the bank. It was ACCEPTED as a heavy load, tk. I really doubt whether he beats off the 18% per annum received from me with such an increase in the exchange rate.

In short, I think that the somewhat inflated price of "90" is perfectly compensated by the "bad weather" in the foreign exchange market. At least it costs me much less than even buyers in Europe (IMHO) ..

The equipment is almost complete, including a sunroof, 7 seats and all these safety radar gizmos. Diesel.

General impressions - a complete buzz!

How it goes, jumping over the St. Petersburg tram rails (air suspension), how cleverly it switches the high beam on the track and helpfully illuminates the curbs at the same time.

A couple of times already helped me out with an emergency braking system when I gaped in traffic jams, and once I specifically saved me on the highway. In all these cases, there might not have been collisions, but his earlier reaction to such situations makes him feel more confident and safe on the roads.

For almost half a year, of course, pleases the appearance. In reality, people turn their heads to my ship. I chose an excellent color - dark, but not boring black, but a chameleon black and blue.

Already came to flashing the brains of the car. The playback of music from the iPhone was buggy and the heating in auto mode tried to work by turning on the fan as much as possible, noisy. Eliminated. But now, for some reason, the iPhone has ceased to be read at all, you need to go again for a flashing.

Even after updating the program, the navigator began to work strangely: when typing addresses located on very long streets (for example, Obvodny Kanal embankment), it does not want to enter the house number until you specify the nearest intersection with some street or a certain interval of this Obvodny Kanal. It’s very hemorrhoids, in fact, a couple of times I already had to spit on a regular navigator and drive using an iPhone. I think that this is normal, the car is really too smart, all these brain problems will gradually come to naught with each new update.

Special impressions:

High beam in AUTO mode very intelligently turns off exactly those LEDs that blind the oncoming car. Exactly what you need, no more and no less. For the first time, I was simply shocked by this smart behavior of the ninety.

I have already written about emergency braking in traffic jams and on the highway. Reads markup. It helps on the track. I turn it off in the city. Do not overestimate the function of reading speed limit signs. When traveling around Finland, this really helps out: the sound of a key on the piano and while driving, the icon of a specific speed limit pops up. I also turn it off in the city, everything is clear here.

Adaptive cruise control is also SONG. On a straight track, when using it, a strange thought arises: Why am I here at all as a driver?

The car is polite - crouches when disembarking passengers. True, it's kind of weird. It happens that he has already drowned out, went out, slammed the door, and only after that she deigns to sit down)))

In general, I am satisfied, I enjoy the control and possession of this unit.

Advantages of the Volvo XC90 D5:

Appearance. Air suspension. Adaptive cruise control. Emergency braking system and other useful electronics.

Disadvantages of the Volvo XC90 D5:

The skin is good, but after 4 months I saw creases and deformation of the seat itself appear on the driver's seat on the left lift. It's probably not even the skin, but the narrowness of the seat (I'm a fairly large man).

The tailgate opening feature is cool, but doesn't always work. Once I even approximately disgraced myself: in front of my acquaintance, I defiantly tried to open the tailgate with a smart look in this way, waved my foot several times - and shit, it didn’t work.

Slightly strain the plastic backs of the front seats on the passenger side. On the other hand, they are easier to take care of. The little son constantly soils these places with his boots.

The segment of powerful SUVs is growing every year. This tidbit of the pie has long been tasted by the Germans and the Swedes. The first generation Volvo XC90 debuted in 2002 and was immediately liked by many, especially American customers. In total, the Swedish crossover has found more than 635,000 buyers in the world. The car became famous for its safety, comfort and versatile interior that can accommodate up to 7 people. Hopes for the second generation of the model are even higher, especially since the company spent about $11 billion to develop the new Volvo XC90.

Volvo, wanting to slightly change the image of its flagship product, decided to upgrade a number of electronic on-board systems, change the style and offer dynamic and at the same time economical powertrains. The result was brilliant. The Volvo XC90 looks very modern and represents the beginning of a new design era for the brand.

The XC90 is much larger than the Volkswagen Touareg. The Swedish SUV is 15 cm longer, 10 cm wider and 4 cm taller.

Both SUVs have different front end designs. The Scandinavians have put on futuristic lines with a huge grill and vertical chrome grills as well as full LED lighting. The German competitor has more conservative forms - a nod to those who appreciate elegance and modesty.

5 years of difference in development are noticeable, first of all, inside. Despite the very high quality of the finishing materials used in the Tuareg, the XC90 is undoubtedly better. It offers many more color combinations and interior design details. In addition to decorative elements made of natural crystal, you can find aluminum, wood and other high-quality materials.

Heated, ventilated, and adjustable leather seats make it easy to get into a comfortable driving position in both SUVs. The Bowers&Wilkins audio system in the top-of-the-line XC90 is an important advantage. The purity and quality of the sound pouring from 10 speakers will take passengers directly to the Philharmonic Hall. This is definitely money well spent.

An interesting solution is the control panel in the form of a tablet in the central part of the front panel. Its interface repeats the work of modern smartphones and does not have any particular difficulties in management. However, knowing all the features will require dedication, a lot of time, and regular monitoring of the cleanliness of the screen in order for the sensors to work properly. Another novelty is all-round cameras. The 360-degree picture is invaluable when maneuvering in the city and in the parking lot.

Seats in two rows are plentiful - the supply of space is comparable to the VW. The third row will comfortably accommodate people up to 170 cm tall.

Volkswagen, as befits a flagship car, demonstrates a very high level of quality. Yes, there are no inserts made of natural wood or polished aluminum, but all the plastic is pleasant and soft to the touch. The set of additional gadgets is not as rich as that of the Swedish competitor, however, it is quite enough to move comfortably.

For lovers of diesel engines, Volvo has prepared two 2-liter turbocharged units. The first generates 190 hp. and 450 Nm of torque, the second - 225 hp. and 470 nm. The 4-cylinder twin-turbo of the most powerful version accelerates an almost 2-ton car to 100 km / h in 7.8 seconds and guarantees very decent elasticity. The engine is quite economical, consuming an average of 10-11 liters in the city, and a little more than 7 liters on the highway.

Despite its impressive dimensions, the Volvo XC90 behaves like a compact crossover. All thanks to the low center of gravity, good weight distribution and 4-way air suspension. The difference in ground clearance between the sport and off-road modes is about 8 cm. In the first mode, the car obediently obeys the driver’s commands, is neutral in corners, and the body does not show any tendency to roll.

However, Comfort mode delivers the most pleasure. The steering does lose a bit of precision, but despite the 20-inch low-profile wheels, the suspension effectively dampens all sorts of bumps. When driving at high speed on the highway, you can appreciate the excellent sound insulation.

German engineers, among others, proposed a 3-liter 6-cylinder V-shaped turbodiesel. The engine develops 245 hp. and 550 Nm of torque available in the range of 1750-2750 rpm. The 3-liter engine accelerates a more than 2-ton SUV to 100 km / h in 7.6 seconds.

Compared to Volvo, the German SUV has better dynamics, which is the merit of a more capacious power unit. Volkswagen Touareg, if desired, can be equipped with an air suspension. On a straight line, the Tuareg demonstrates good stability, but when cornering, one has to recognize the superiority of the Volvo XC90. The test VW was equipped with 19-inch alloy wheels and courageously hid any bumps - from holes in the asphalt to protruding roots on forest roads.

In the city, everyone will appreciate the good visibility from the driving position of the Touareg. A classic rear-view camera will help maneuvering in the parking lot, and pneumatics will help in the fight against curbs, which allows you to increase the ground clearance up to 300 mm. Fuel consumption in the urban cycle lies within 10-12 liters, and on the highway the on-board computer shows no more than 9 liters.

Ultimately, Volvo seems to be more “ripe”. The air suspension handles dynamic cornering better, the interior offers a higher level of finish and variety of materials, and the cabin itself is slightly larger. For Tuareg, it is worth recognizing the victory in smoothness on paved paths and higher ability to overcome obstacles (due to greater ground clearance).

Volvo XC90 with a 225-horsepower turbodiesel and 8-speed automatic transmission is estimated at 3,300,000 rubles, and the top-end R-Design is 3,800,000 rubles. For a diesel Volkswagen Touareg, they ask a little less: from 2,900,000 rubles to 3,100,000 rubles.
