The car, which the Swedes spent three years developing, marked the beginning of the next technological era of Volvo - it received a completely new platform, a new style created by chief designer Thomas Ingenlath, and a new line of engines.

The "second" Volvo XC90 looks beautiful, modern and presentable, and regardless of color - the exterior of the five-door successfully combines Nordic sophistication with solidity and healthy aggression.

The best car is full-face - from this angle it is especially formidable and assertive: stylish optics with LED "Thor's hammers" of running lights, an impressive "dump" of the radiator grille and a sculptural bumper.

In profile, the off-road vehicle demonstrates monumental outlines with a long hood, a powerful “shoulder” line, expressive sidewalls and large wheel arch cutouts. Behind the "Swede" is perceived a little heavy, but this position is saved by gracefully curved vertical lights and elegant exhaust pipes integrated into the bumper.

The overall length of the Volvo XC90 of the second generation extends to 4950 mm, of which 2984 mm is occupied by the gap between the wheelsets, its width is 2140 mm, and its height does not go beyond 1775 mm. The interior of the "second" Volvo XC90 is good in all respects - it is airy, attractive, homely and Swedish attentive to detail. The front fascia is designed in the spirit of minimalism - it is dominated by a "vertical" 9.5-inch infotainment screen, which manages most of the functions, under which there are only a few physical buttons.
The second display, but already “horizontal” and measuring 12.3 inches, is located behind a relief three-spoke steering wheel and plays the role of a combination of instruments (although in the basic version, the “toolkit” is simpler, with an 8-inch “scoreboard”).

By default, the interior of a mid-size SUV is a five-seater, with perfectly profiled front seats with advanced lateral support and a solid set of adjustments, and a comfortable and cozy rear sofa, consisting of three separate sections. As an option, the car is equipped with a third row of seats, which is designed for people no taller than 170 cm.

With seven seats, the trunk volume of the Volvo XC90 of the second incarnation is 368 liters, with five - 613 liters (to the level of glazing). The two rear rows of seats fold into a completely flat area, thanks to which the capacity of the "hold" reaches 1889 liters.

In a niche under the raised floor, the off-road vehicle hides a “dokatka” and a set of tools, and in the “top” versions there are also air suspension cylinders.

For the second "edition" of the Volvo XC90, in-line four-cylinder engines of the Drive-E family are offered that meet the environmental requirements of Euro 6:

• Diesel cars are equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, i-Art direct fuel supply and a 16-valve timing, which is available in two “pumping” levels:
  • on the basic version D4 it generates 190 horsepower at 4250 rpm and 400 Nm of peak torque at 1750-2500 rpm;
  • more powerful version D5 has 235 hp at 4000 rpm and 480 Nm of torque at 1750-2500 rpm.
• Under the hood of gasoline SUVs there is a 2.0-liter unit with direct “feed” technology, 16 valves, inlet and outlet phase shifters and a turbocharger (and in the “top” version also with a drive compressor), also declared in two boost levels:
  • "junior" option T5 has in its arsenal 249 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 350 Nm of available output at 2200-4500 rpm;
  • and "senior" T6- 320 hp at 5700 rpm and 400 Nm of torque potential at 2200-4500 rpm.

The engines are offered together with an 8-speed "automatic" and a fifth-generation all-wheel drive system with a fifth-generation Haldex multi-plate clutch, which transfers up to half of the traction reserve to the rear axle wheels, depending on the road situation, with the exception of a 190-horsepower diesel engine - it fits exclusively with the front drive wheels .

From zero to the first "hundred" off-road vehicle rushes in 6.5-9.2 seconds, and its maximum capabilities "rest" at 205-230 km/h.

Diesel modifications of the car "destroy" 5.2-5.8 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers in combined conditions, and gasoline - 7.6-8 liters.

At the heart of the "second XC90" is a completely new scalable and versatile platform Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), on which it is planned to build all the new products of the Swedish automaker in the future.

Front and rear on the five-door involved aluminum suspension with steel subframes. The front of the car is supported by an independent "hodovka" with double wishbones. At the rear, a multi-link design is used, complemented by a transverse leaf spring made of composite materials.

As an option, the crossover suspension can be replaced with a pneumatic suspension with the function of automatically changing the clearance depending on road conditions and the selected driving mode.

On all wheels of the five-door, reinforced disc brakes are used, while the “pancakes” are ventilated in front. The rack and pinion steering mechanism of the off-road vehicle is supplemented with an electro-hydraulic booster with variable effort.

In the Russian market, the second-generation Volvo XC90 is offered in three trim levels - Momentum, Inscription and R-Design.

• For the basic version of an SUV with a 190-horsepower engine and front-wheel drive, you will need to pay at least 3,379,000 rubles, and with a “younger” petrol “four” – 3,549,000 rubles. The suspension of the car is made entirely of aluminum, which is good, but unfortunately in our country it is not very reliable. There are double wishbones at the front and a multi-link system at the back, all independent of course. There is also an additional spring at the back, which improves softness.

Optionally, the manufacturer offers to install air suspension on the Volvo XC90 2018-2019, which will independently adjust to the type of road, based on this, change the clearance and its stiffness. This look is much more comfortable. It is not difficult to drive a car, as the electric power steering with the function of changing the stiffness helps in this.
