Despite the presence of information messages that date back to 2011 about the planned release of all-wheel drive models, they never appeared in car dealerships in any country in the world. To date, Renault's plans also do not include the expansion of the model range with all-wheel drive models, although the concern's leading top managers confirm the presence of many requests from the owners of these cars and potential buyers about the possibility of producing models with all-wheel drive.

Probably not in vain I still remembered the good old "Zaporozhets". As in the hero of many Soviet jokes, the desire to reduce the cost of a car comes through in many decisions when developing interior elements. Of course, the deliberate simplicity, coupled with the defiantly rough finishing materials inherent in the Logan of the first years of production, has already remained far in the past. But the most important thing is the suspension: not every crossover has such energy intensity - even when driving along a broken country road at a decent speed, there are no breakdowns, and it hides the coating profile perfectly.

If without fanaticism

The last stage of testing is a broken primer. Of course, bearing in mind that we do not have the opportunity, if necessary, to transfer part of the torque to the rear axle, we found the path, although with a noticeably rugged terrain, but with a fairly hard surface. Suspension moves were quite off-road. Even on some very treacherous bends, they managed to maintain traction on both front wheels. In general, we can say that the experiment was a success: even the absence of a second leading axle did not stop Stepway in the fight against the crossroads. Want an all-wheel drive Logan or Sandero Stepway? But equipping them with a transmission from Duster is unprofitable: the power take-off unit in the gearbox, cardan shaft, rear gearbox with differential are too expensive and heavy ... Nevertheless, two all-wheel drive vehicles, Logan and Sandero, were delivered to Tolyatti this spring for sea trials, - and with rear-wheel drive based on an exotic hydrostatic transmission!

In hydrostatic transmissions, the force from the engine to the drive wheels is transmitted by a high-pressure working fluid, the pressure of which is created by the pump and is realized in the form of a torque on the hydraulic motor shaft. One of the advantages of such a scheme is its compactness and the absence of a mechanical connection between the engine and the wheels - you can do without a transfer case and cardan shaft, as well as without major alterations to the body floor and rear suspension. In addition, hydrostatic transmissions allow high torque at low speeds.

However, there are significant disadvantages, the main one is double energy conversion and, as a result, low overall efficiency (about 70%), which decreases in maximum torque modes and with increasing speed. And hydraulic pumps and hydraulic motors are not cheap and require highly qualified maintenance. Therefore, hydrostatic transmissions have not yet been used on mass-produced passenger cars, although they have long been widely used on special equipment - in agriculture, construction and transport for oversized cargo.

In Renault, most likely, components and assemblies of the French company Poclain Hydraulics, a well-known manufacturer of construction equipment, are being tested. For example, since 2005, Poclain has supplied Renault Trucks, MAN, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo with an auxiliary transmission under the AddiDrive trademark - with hydraulic motors for installation in the front wheel hubs of heavy trucks. And after the takeover of Tork and FAM, Poclain's engineering division is the contractor for the design and construction of Renault and Dacia racing and concept cars. And as a dealer option, it offers the installation of mechanical self-locking differentials for mass-produced cars Renault, Dacia, Nissan, Peugeot, Citroen, Fiat and Mercedes.

AddiDrive transmission in two layouts

Since 2013, Poclain Powertrain has been offering a compact version of the AddiDrive system - specifically for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. It provides for the installation of a compact hydraulic pump (130 mm in diameter) in a standard gearbox, and at the rear - the installation of either one 30-kilowatt hydraulic motor with a differential and axle shafts (according to our data, just such an option was chosen for Logan), or a pair of motor-wheels. The working pressure in the system is 450 bar. Under normal road conditions, the hydraulic drive is not active, so the car remains an ordinary front-wheel drive. And it is connected automatically when the front wheels slip and operates at speeds up to 40 km / h.

Interestingly, in 2013, the PSA Peugeot Citroen group also conducted experiments with hydrostatic transmission, albeit in cooperation with Bosch. The hydraulic motor on the Peugeot 2008 HYbrid Air concept car was used not for all-wheel drive, but as a component of the hybrid powertrain. A pump driven by a traditional gearbox pumped oil into a hydraulic accumulator, compressing the gas. When driving in the city, to save fuel, this process was launched in the opposite direction: compressed nitrogen, expanding, pumped oil into the hydraulic motor, also built into the gearbox. The internal combustion engine did not work. Peugeot and Citroen built several running examples, but the project was eventually shelved due to the high cost of the system and low potential demand.

Poclain claims that the cost of its hydrostatic all-wheel drive is half that of a traditional mechanical one, and the weight does not exceed 40 kg. However, the AddiDrive system has not yet found mass application - now it is offered only for finalizing Peugeot Boxer vans.

Will Logan and Sandero be the first mass-produced cars with hydraulic rear wheels? If such modifications get on the AvtoVAZ conveyor, then not earlier than 2018.
