Comparison of Opel Astra J hatchback and Volkswagen Golf R VI hatchback. Opel Astra III or Volkswagen Golf V - which is better? Mechanics is better

21.10.2019

Good day to all.

I wanted to write a small addition to the first review of the aster. I still like the car. There are no complaints about comfort and dynamics. The machine also works fine. Pah-pah))) there are, of course, moments when he thinks a little or even a little stupid, but in any case it's better than a pen !!! There is no desire to return to the latter at all. if only the second car is on the handle, for the soul))) But with the increased prices for OSAGO, not a small transport tax and rising gasoline prices, this is still not realistic ...)))

Some figures on the computer: the average consumption of 11.8 highway / city 35/65. If only the city, and still push, I think 15 will come out. track, I think about 10 goes out (subjectively). On a cruise of 110 km / h (according to the navigator) shows an instant consumption of 8.6. I'm happy with the greed. For comrades, cars with much less power eat an order of magnitude more. For example, a colleague's Chevrolet Cruze eats 15 at 106 (like such a figure is 1.6 engine) mares. By driving style: I try to do without sudden acceleration and braking. Save fuel and save the car. Skillfully, you can knock a car in two years))). Rarely, in the mood, you can ride faster)))

Strengths:

Fast and comfortable car

Weak sides:

slightly incomprehensible work of the climate

Review of Opel Astra 1.6 Turbo (Opel Astra) 2010 Part 4

So owned this car for three years with a cap. I began to sell for two reasons, I wanted to get rid of all loans due to an incomprehensible foreign policy situation, a job change and, as a result, uncertainty with stability in the future) The second reason was, according to my feelings, the car should have been sold, although there seemed to be no obvious serious problems in it No, I trust my instincts.

In general, since the last review: - the story with the bypass valve ended with the replacement of the turbine under warranty (and a driving ban while waiting for three weeks) somewhere around 35-40 thousand km - melted hoses from the antifreeze tank were changed twice under warranty, which in and of itself was nonsense to me. - there was a problem with the thermostat, replaced under warranty. - Three times they reflashed the brains or something electronic under warranty. - the work of climate control has remained a mystery to me, in general, it is very difficult to catch a comfortable temperature for yourself, then at 21 it’s already hot, then at +26 it’s cold. - it appeared then disappeared, without any regularity, a slight rustle, then several times per trip, then not appearing for 2 weeks. - periodically some problems popped up, the ABS and engine lights came on, I don’t even remember what it was, under warranty.

Strengths:

Frisky dynamics, a lot of space for the driver inside, a comfortable trunk with a transformation shelf, good music, a good machine, a heated steering wheel a miracle, a cool glass washer, comfortable inside, beautiful outside.

Weak sides:

Visiting the Dealer Too Often under Warranty

VW Golf is considered the founder of the golf class to which he gave his name. Its main competitor is Opel Astra. Which of these models stands the test of time better?

Buyers of each of these models are offered a wide range of modifications - 3- and 5-door hatchbacks, 4-door sedan, 5-door station wagon, as well as coupe-cabriolet and compact car, created on their basis. At the same time, Opel also has a commercial 3-door version of the Astra Van station wagon, and VW has a pseudo-off-road version of the Cross Golf compact van. Today we will compare the most common classic versions of both models in Ukraine with a 5-door hatchback body.

Opel Astra N since 2004 from UAH 77,000 up to 116 000 UAH

VW Golf V 2003-2008 from 92 000 UAH up to 144 000 UAH

Check the slack

The bodies of both cars are distinguished by good corrosion resistance, although the Astra still has one characteristic weak point where rust can appear (see "Resource and Repair"). In addition, Opel, unlike VW, has a number of complaints about the reliability and condition of body parts. Thus, peeling of the chrome coating of the radiator grille, fogging of the rear optics (cars of 2008-2009), wear of the bushings of the front wiper mechanism, due to which the rods fly off and the wipers do not work (with strong output, the trapezoid assembly with an electric motor changes) .

Salon Golf V looks better. Both cars can accommodate five people. Despite the fact that the wheelbase of the VW is 35 mm shorter than that of the competitor, it has more legroom for rear passengers. To achieve this, the creators of the Golf V sacrificed the "marching" trunk volume. At the same time, it will be more convenient for a passenger sitting in the middle in Opel - there the central tunnel of the body is smaller. The visibility of both models does not cause complaints, and the sound insulation of the engine compartment of the Astra is worse - the hum of the engine is well audible even at low speeds.

Of the characteristic problems of Opel, we note malfunctions of the driver's airbag, and Golf V - failure of the air conditioning compressor (on cars made in 2004-2006) and malfunctions of power windows, which are often eliminated by flashing the control "brain".

With a wider boot opening and 50 kg more payload, the VW is more practical than the competition. The maximum volume of trunks of these cars is almost the same (1300 liters for Astra and 1305 liters for Golf V), and in the “traveling” state it is 30 liters more for Opel.

Reliable "hearts"

For these models, a rather extensive line of power units was intended. However, Astra with diesel engines were not officially imported to Ukraine and are classified as exotic. The "5-doors" are most often equipped with 1.4 and 1.6 liter engines, and the Golf is found with all the proposed engines, including the "solar" ones.

The most common gasoline unit of both cars is 1.6 liters. Comparing the technical characteristics of these modifications with the “mechanics”, we found out that the Golf is more dynamic - acceleration to “hundreds” takes 10.8 s, while that of a competitor takes 11.6 s. In addition, in Ukraine there are often "charged" versions of VW - GTI (0-100 km / h with DSG - 6.9 s), but it is almost impossible to find "hot" versions of Opel - OPS (7.8 s to 100 km / h). h).

The Astra's most problematic engine is the 1.4-liter. It often “eats up” oil and is picky about its quality - the use of bad oil or its untimely replacement is fraught with failure of the timing chain hydraulic tensioner (in other units - a belt). If it is not replaced in time, the chain may turn and the engine will break. In 1.4 liter engines (2008-2009), malfunctions of the intake manifold Twinport dampers were noted (at the same time, the manifold with the fuel rail is changed). When using low-quality gasoline in 1.6 and 1.8 liter engines, individual ignition coils may fail. In all engines, the oil pressure sensor loses its tightness over time.

The most reliable Golf units are the most massive, the MPI families are 1.4 and 1.6 liters. A characteristic drawback of rarer units of the same volume, but of the FSI family, is a short-lived timing chain, which can stretch out and require replacement along with a hydraulic tensioner for a run of 120-150 thousand km (in 2.0 liters FSI - timing belt). In the Golf 2.0 liter FSI engines, a break in the factory corrugations of the exhaust system was noted (2 pieces are used), and the timing belt does not withstand the interval of 180 thousand km prescribed by the manufacturer (mechanics advise reducing this period to 90 thousand km). Another problem with all FSIs is the failure of individual ignition coils. In the 2.0 liter turbodiesel, fuel injectors failed (dealers change them free of charge under warranty).

Mechanics is better

Almost all Astra and Golf V are front-wheel drive. True, VW also has all-wheel drive versions of 4Motion in its arsenal, but they are rare with us.

Most Astras are equipped with a 5-speed Easytronic automatic gearbox. But when buying an Opel, experts advise paying attention to versions with "mechanics" - it is more reliable. Easytronic is characterized by "thoughtfulness" in operation and has proven itself to be problematic. At each MOT (after 15 thousand km), the clutch must be adjusted (this procedure is also required after the car slips). If this is not done, the clutch and dual-mass flywheel can fail by 50 thousand km.

Many Golf Vs are equipped with "mechanics", and it is these cars that are desirable to choose. Although on some manual gearboxes, after 100 thousand km, wear of the dual bearing is possible. In diesel versions with “mechanics”, a two-mass flywheel wears out by a run of 150-160 thousand km. At the same time, the DSG robotic gearbox is more problematic - there were problems with the ECU with the so-called mechatronics, which is manifested by jerks when switching. In the best case, you can carry out self-adaptation of the clutch at a proprietary service station by “flashing” the ECU, and if this does not help, you will have to change the clutch package.

Harder - more expensive

The front suspensions of both cars have the same design - independent McPherson; at the rear, the Astra traditionally has a simpler semi-dependent beam, and the Golf V uses a complex multi-link design for the first time.

The chassis of both models are moderately rigid and allow you to drive actively, although thanks to the rear “multi-link”, the VW holds the road better when cornering quickly. At the same time, the complexity of the rear of the Golf V explains the higher cost of maintenance - every 80-100 thousand km you have to change the bushings and stabilizer struts, and after 140-160 thousand km - the rear breakup levers. But the silent blocks of the remaining rear levers are able to withstand about 200 thousand km.

The “rubber bands” of the Astra rear beam are considered “indestructible”, while the shock absorbers can become unusable by 40-50 thousand km, and when overloaded, the coils in the springs often break (reinforced springs are now offered).

But the front end will often have to be repaired at Opel: stabilizer rods serve 20-30 thousand km, strut support bearings - 30-40 thousand km, silent blocks of front levers - about 100 thousand km, "ball" - 150-170. At VW, the rear silent blocks of the front levers go up to 80 thousand km, the front ones - up to 140 thousand km, the stabilizer struts - about 100 thousand km, the "ball" ones - about 200 thousand km.

The fact that wheel bearings are supplied complete with hubs increases the cost of running both models. The steering of the Astra is equipped with electric power steering, while the Golf V is electric. The Opel mechanism has proven itself to be trouble-free, but less durable - steering rods can withstand 70-80 thousand km. VW tie rod ends are capable of running 150-200 thousand km, and the rods themselves - even longer. At the same time, in the steering Golf V of the first years of production (2004-2006), the gearing of the rack and electric motor wore out (knocks when driving over bumps). Later, this node was upgraded to fix this problem.

One step away from the throne

The best today was the "classic of the genre" - VW Golf. This car is ahead of its main competitor in quality, reliability and dynamics. That is why buyers more often vote for him with their wallets, overpaying a lot of money - an average of 15 thousand hryvnias. for copies of the same year of issue.

Although the Opel Astra lost to its opponent, it must be admitted - not enough to consider this car bad. If you choose more reliable modifications (with a 1.6 liter engine and "mechanics"), this will avoid a number of problems and, accordingly, the cost of eliminating them. We recommend Astra to pragmatic car owners.

History of the Opel Astra

1998-2003 The second generation of Opel Astra G was produced.
08.03 Third generation Opel Astra with body index H.
03.05 The Astra GTC 3-door hatchback and its "charged" 240-horsepower version of the OPC 2.0 L Turbo make its debut.
03.07 Restyling. New engines: petrol - 1.6 l (115 hp), 1.8 l (140 hp), turbodiesel - 1.3 l (90 hp).
09.09 The current, fourth generation Opel Astra J will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The sale of Astra H in Ukraine continues.

Resource and repair

Body and interior

Affordable cost. High passive safety. At the back, the average passenger sits more comfortably due to the fact that the central tunnel of the body is lower here. The "camping" trunk volume is larger. Possible corrosion on the trunk lid, fogging of the rear optics (auto 2008-2009), problems with the mechanism of the front wipers, driver's airbag, chrome plating on the grille. The loading opening of the trunk is narrowed.

Power unit and transmission

Engines of 1.6 and 1.8 liters are more reliable than 1.4 liters. Trouble-free manual gearbox. The oil pressure sensor is leaking. Possible failure of individual ignition coils (1.6 and 1.8 liters). 1.4 liter engines can "eat up" oil, they are sensitive to the quality of the lubricant, and in versions 2008-2009. possible problems with the Twinport system. Problematic and "thoughtful" robotic gearbox Easytronic.

Suspension, steering, brakes

Good stability and handling. The fragility of the stabilizer rods, support bearings of the front struts, rear shock absorbers, steering rods. Broken rear springs. Expensive wheel bearing replacement.

Resource and repair

Body and interior

High passive safety. Better value retention. More legroom for rear passengers. Better interior trim materials. Noise isolation is better. Load capacity is higher. The market value is higher. Failure of the air conditioning compressor (auto 2004-2006). There may be a problem with the power windows.

Power unit and transmission

The best dynamics. The choice of engines is more diverse - there are both petrol and diesel versions. There are also "charged" versions of the GTI. The 1.6 liter MPI and 1.9 liter TDI engines are the most trouble-free. The fragility of the timing chain (FSI 1.4 l and 1.6 l). Ignition coil failure (all FSI engines). Breakage of the corrugation of the exhaust system (2.0 l FSI). Fuel injector failure (2.0L TDI). Problems with the DSG “robot” are not ruled out in some manual gearboxes after 100 thousand km.

Suspension, steering, brakes

Better stability during active driving. The front suspension is more durable. Greater resource consumables steering. The cost of maintaining the rear suspension is higher. Expensive wheel bearing replacement. Accelerated steering wear (auto 2004-2006).

Polished to a shine, Golf's perfectionism looks provocative: the prospect of beating the standard on its own field is extraordinarily motivating! And yet, perhaps, it is not worth trying to surpass the ideal in all respects? What if we simply offer a reasonable alternative, playing on the protest moods of those who do not want to think in stereotypes?

Sworn friends

Already the sixth "Golf" gives the impression of a machine devoid of any shortcomings. Such refinement captivates someone, but it may seem boring to others. And indeed, from generation to generation "Golf" carefully carries a valuable genetic code, improving it both successfully and carefully. He is more likely to force himself to be respected in the process of dating than to cause love at first sight: the production of spontaneous emotions at a distance is clearly not his path. Volkswagen is hindered by innate restraint and pedantry, bordering on tediousness. He is not very interesting outwardly, but he is able to surprise with his intellect and skills, which you will not immediately suspect in him.

Astra, on the other hand, definitely relies on appearance: if we had awarded for design, Opel would immediately snatch valuable points for itself. However, taste is an individual category: someone loves a priest, and someone loves a priest's daughter. And yet, I'm sure, unlike the "Golf" with its deliberately neutral appearance, "Astra" is trying to make eyes at the very moment of acquaintance, promising unforgettable moments of passion. Even the 5-door hatchback looks very seductive, demonstrating the spectacular plastic sidewalls, and the three-door GTC is trying to frankly seduce with appetizing forms. Beauty is a terrible force!

Kinesthetic or Visual?

The interior of the Golf at first glance seems simple, but only against the background of the Astra. It would be more correct to call it concise. However, visual contact does not complete the picture: to the touch, the Volkswagen seems to be much richer than it looks. The space is organized flawlessly: mutual understanding with the machine occurs on an intuitive level. The steering wheel, upholstered in silky leather, lies perfectly in the hands, information from the instruments is read by peripheral vision, climate control does not raise questions. Everything you take on seems perfect: buttons, keys, knobs are laid out in their rightful places and are on alert. You have not yet thought about what exactly you want to adjust or adjust - and everything is already done.

Manipulations with the basic RCD-310 audio system do not require thoughtful study of the interface, and even the more complex RCD-510 "head" allows you to work with it without first studying the instructions - especially since the touch screen removes many questions. You can only find fault with the sound stage: it seems that the music comes from the left. However, it is easy to compensate for this by adjusting the balance.

But the most noticeable step on the way to the ideal was the driver's seat. It may be that tall drivers will not experience problems, but for a short me (170 cm) it seemed that the seat was too high even in the lowest position, forcing me to move closer to the steering wheel. This feature of ergonomics is even more noticeable against the background of the Astra, whose front seats seemed more hospitable. In addition to the standard set of seat adjustments, the seats are supplemented with a movable cushion segment, which allows you to make it longer. A very useful bonus!

In terms of design, the interior of the Opel looks much more attractive and modern: it is easier to fall in love with the eyes than the Volkswagen. The quality of the finish at first seems to be no worse than that of the Golf, but upon closer examination, the intensity of enthusiasm weakens: in some places they saved money on materials. Yes, and ergonomics gives cause for criticism: the instruments are not so transparent for perception, the interface of the multimedia system is more confused, and the flickering of the buttons on the center console causes brain cancer. Finally, the Astra has noticeably worse visibility, which was rather spoiled by stupid triangular windows near the front and rear pillars of the body and a small rear one.

Beauty requires sacrifice

It is obvious that the "Golf" was built not from design, but from function. It is enough to look at both cars in profile to understand: the Volkswagen is much “square” than the Astra. Convenient access to the rear row of seats is provided by the rear doors of a more regular shape, which form a wide opening. The sofa does not hide behind the body pillar, and this minimizes the risk of hitting your head during landing. In the center of the back row, you can organize an armrest by pulling it out of the back; and his kinematics is such that he is held quite high, without forcing him to reach out with his elbow. But this is an option.

By default, the Astra does not have an armrest either. In terms of space on the sofa, the Opel resembles a Volkswagen, but is inferior to it in terms of the amount of space in the leg area. Astra also loses in terms of ease of landing: an underestimated window line encroached on the rear door opening, and the back of the sofa hid behind a massive body pillar.

Addition with subtraction

In the basic configuration, "Golf" is deprived of a sofa divided into two unequal parts: it can only be folded in its entirety. But for a surcharge, it becomes what a practical hatchback should be, and besides, it grows with a ski hatch. But if the back row is completely left at the disposal of passengers, then the Volkswagen truck will turn out to be mediocre: the trunk volume is very modest.

Astra copes better with the transportation of goods. She not only has a more spacious trunk, but also the back of the sofa unfolds even in the basic version. For a surcharge, you can get an armrest with a hatch - however, the ski hole itself will be noticeably smaller than that of the Golf. But as an option, Opel offers the Flex-Flo organizer, which allows you to organize an underground in the trunk, experimenting with the floor level. And this is good.

Blow harder!

Despite the fact that naturally aspirated power units appear in the price lists of both "Germans", cars with turbo engines look the most attractive. The optimal "Golf" is a modification of 1.4TSI, which can be equipped with both "mechanics" and "automatic". The engine was a success: despite the modest 122 forces, it easily carries even the relatively heavy Passat and Tiguan, and even copes effortlessly with the light Golf! "Volkswagen" picks up speed recklessly - and no matter what box the motor has to work with: it is equally pleasant to control acceleration both on machines with "mechanics" and on "automated" versions with a DSG "robot". The character of the engine is even, and the thrust is evenly spread over the entire rev range - just what you need in the city! I don’t presume to advise more modest units: a 105-horsepower 1.2TSI is not much cheaper, and with even weaker engines, the Golf will fundamentally lose in dynamics.

Astra also starts with naturally aspirated engines, but flourishes only with a 1.4-liter turbo engine with 140 horsepower. True, having a horse advantage over the Volkswagen, such an Opel does not ride so cheerfully: it pulls worse from the bottom, and starts throwing forces only when it is no longer necessary. Yes, and a 6-speed automatic transmission takes a bribe for its services. Even the 180-horsepower version of the "1.6-Turbo" feels no better than the 1.4-liter rival! "Mechanical" modifications accelerate faster, but "Volkswagen" still leaves a more pleasant impression: it realizes its potential an order of magnitude higher.

Fewer doors, more fun

Chassis "Golf" - one of the best (if not the best) in the class: this is confirmed by the very first turns. The steering wheel is extremely informative, the rolls are moderate, and the tires stick to the asphalt so tenaciously that it seems as if the hatchback can easily pass along a sheer wall. Confidence in the car grows in proportion to the speed. The larger the numbers measured by the speedometer needle, the more imbued with the capabilities of the car: "Volkswagen" firmly holds a straight line and is absolutely reliable in corners. The brakes are perfect: the pedal is sensitive but hard; and the pressure in the system is controlled not by the movement of the pedal, but by the force of pressing. Super!

"Astra" does not leave such a solid impression. The brake pedal is too mobile: against the background of the "Golf" its course seems too big. However, this in no way affected the efficiency of the system - it just takes a little getting used to the nature of the slowdown. But an overly light and empty steering wheel is already a more serious drawback: you have to grope for the trajectory in a turn. The ultimate capabilities of the Opel are no worse than those of the Volkswagen, but you can understand this only by thoroughly rolling into the car - while the Golf immediately reveals its charms. In any case, Astra is not so clearly trying to share the joy of driving with the driver.

But this is true only for the 5-door hatchback. The spectacular three-door GTC rides in a completely different way! The reason lies in the Hyper Strat's front suspension, in which the knuckles rotate separately from the swinging "candle", allowing you to get rid of power steering. The steering wheel of the GTC is also light, but much more accurate and informative than that of the regular Astra. And that's why the 3-door hatch steers just as well as the Golf.

flying gait

"Volkswagen" is assembled with precision care and does not emit a single extraneous sound in motion. Even the voice of the motor, gradually breaking through the thickets of sound insulation, broadcasts exclusively on business and does not irritate the ear. But only as long as there is smooth asphalt under the wheels. The road deteriorates, and the car begins to get nervous, and the hard edges of the pits and tram rails come into the cabin through the mournful clatter of the suspension, which is clearly not happy with deviations from the norm. The car goes through bumps hard, forcing you to thoroughly slow down before potholes.

"Opel" behaves much more restrained: you will not frighten him with broken asphalt. The Astra rolls more gently over most road artifacts and doesn't annoy with suspension comments. The glamorous version of the GTC, which is supposed to have larger shoes, is also very resistant to the hardships of our roads: even being shod in custom-made 19-inch “bast shoes”, the three-door shows a better ride than the “Golf” on 17-inch wheels.

Assets and liabilities

In 2009, EuroNCAP experts successfully crashed both Golf and Astra: both cars received five stars. Nevertheless, in relation to our reality, there are several important nuances. In any of the "Golfs" you will find seven airbags: front, side, window plus an airbag for the driver's knees. In addition, a couple more side airbags for rear passengers can be added to the Volkswagen.

"Astra" by default offers only four pillows (front and side), and inflatable "curtains" cost an additional 9,500 rubles - inexpensive, but still. But Opel even added a dynamic stabilization system to the basic versions, while Volkswagen requires 22,710 rubles for ESP.

It is also appropriate to mention here that representatives of EuroNCAP twice awarded Opel for innovation, noting the Opel Eye traffic sign recognition system and AFL adaptive light, which can also be ordered in Russia.

The rumble of turbines, snatches of sleep

This year, "people's motorists" took out of circulation "Golf" with a stunted naturally aspirated 1.4-liter engine; and now the price for a three-door with a 1.6 engine (102 hp) in the Trendline configuration starts at 603,000 rubles - three thousand more than the most affordable Astra performed by Essensia with a 1.4-liter engine with a capacity of 101 liters. With. In this Golf, in addition to the aforementioned security features, there are front power windows, heated mirrors with electric drive, central locking with remote control. By default, the air conditioner is only for versions with TSI and TDI engines, and it costs 43,240 rubles separately. For a 5-door body, you should pay 22,850 rubles. In general, due to poverty, such a car will be only a pale shadow of a real Golf.

Cars with turbo engines start at 616 thousand for 1.2TSI (85 hp), and with the optimal 1.4TSI engine, the Golf will cost 676 thousand on the “arm”. For DSG, you should pay another 66,000 rubles, which is rather immodest. But you still have to pick up expensive options individually: rear doors (22,850), ESP (22,710), multifunction display (2000), audio system (7020), fog lights (6730), steering wheel with “music” control buttons (10,860 ) is at least. If we add everything up, we get the Golf-1.4TSI-DSG for 814,170 rubles.

A similarly equipped Astra with a 140-horsepower turbo engine and an “automatic” in the Anjoy configuration will cost 763,900 rubles. Significant difference! And if you set out to buy the cheapest car for 600 thousand, then it will be quite suitable for life: it needs air conditioning and “music”.

The spectacular GTC is 12,900 rubles cheaper than the five-door, besides, it can be taken with a 140-horsepower naturally aspirated 1.8-liter engine. In addition, the GTC has 1.4 (140 hp) and 1.6 (180 hp) turbo engines on the “hand”, while on a regular hatchback, an “automatic” is required for these power units.

WE DECIDED:

"Golf" is not in vain considered the standard in the class. Everything in it is good: both the interior, and driving performance, and liquidity: both at the age of three and at the age of ten, Volkswagen will easily find a second, third, ... tenth owner. The Golf's biggest problem is the price, even though it looks much more affordable now than it used to.

Compared to the magnificent Volkswagen, the current Astra leaves a more blurred impression. However, we came to the conclusion that Opel did not lose a single point to its sworn friend. "Astra" is not so brilliantly controlled and has a number of complaints regarding ergonomics, but it still has a very decent interior, and the ride is higher. In addition, the Opel has a larger trunk, which is also important. At the same time, the Astra looks much more elegant than the Golf, which has set its teeth on edge, and the three-door GTC is a completely unique car for its money.

The love of our compatriots for sedans is incomprehensible and dimensionless. Embodiment of ideas The Volkswagen Jetta is named after a strong gust of wind. A more complete name for this wind stream is Jet Stream, which can rush and reach speeds of up to 160 km / h.

Volkswagen Jetta cars or competitor Opel Astra were produced for markets where these modifications are in high demand. "Astra-Sedan" is a competitor to the "Mexican German". Although Astra's name is not so formidable, it cannot be called a simple garden flower either. This brand of car has long been used to be considered a natural hatchback, although earlier its name was called "Cadet".

Named with all the traditions of the Opel Astra, they began to produce not only in the sedan and hatchback, but also offered two more incarnations: a convertible and a station wagon. Buyers have a choice. German developers have created related sedan and hatchback models, but not for sales in their country. Of course, one cannot argue, they are available in the German car markets and are in demand among the population, but not with such enthusiasm as their five-door relatives.

Astra and Jetta are produced and assembled far from their homeland, and this makes them related, although the Opel Astra is closer and closer to us, because. these fast sedans are securely entrenched near St. Petersburg, but the German still beckons and attracts with something. But enough ideas, let's move on to the real characteristics and their discussion.

In order to objectively and impartially compare the Opel Astra model (sedan) and a similar option - the Volkswagen Jetta, we suggest that you first familiarize yourself with the main characteristics of the car.

Opel Astra or Volkswagen Jetta: choice of heart or mind

We will analyze the advantages of each car separately and find out which is better: the Astra hatchback or the Jetta sedan. Let's start with perhaps the most popular model. Volkswagen Jetta meets all the expectations of the buyer. Design ideas are based on the rectangle rule. The panel, buttons, screen and the entire interior consist of rectangles and regular lines. If the "Volswagen" creators were based on the geometry of Euclid, then the volume buttons and microclimate control knobs would become the same shape as the entire interior. But reason prevailed, and the designers took advantage of the compass, and not just straight and angular objects of mathematics.

Also, the designers created an outlined dashboard visor and scales on it. The classic has won. Rectangular LCD display on the panel, like iambic tetrameter from Pushkin's works. Many will ask: “Convenient? - Certainly! Boring? - it could be worse! Qualitatively? - maybe! ”, although the neatly docked panel made of soft plastic is tender, despite the simple lines in the interior of the car.

But if we talk about doors, then this is a purely Mexican direction. An unpleasant and depressing impression is left by such errors as, of unknown origin, a substitute for leather for upholstery or inaccurate joining of the window sill. The sound that occurs when the doors are closed can in no way be attributed to German production technologies, it seems that there is a lot of space inside the panels, through which the wind calmly walks. Uncomfortable, agree?

Comparing what is better today: Jetta's "golf-class" sedan or Opel's Astra, compared to the first option, Astra is endearing and captivating. Smooth lines in interior design make you dizzy, enveloping curves bring zest, and lighting at night lets in mystery and mystery. This car can, it would seem, safely be called "premium class", however, it is worth coming up and taking a closer look - and the fairy tale is over! The quality of plastic with ridiculous shiny edging leaves much to be desired.

It is also not clear why the "bed" on the front panel is arranged, consisting of as many as four handles, with rotating mechanisms, and several dozen buttons on the console. On-board electronics is not acceptable for such cars, its management and use is irrational, inefficient and difficult. The four-position nipple hidden in the washer, which, in turn, reacts and rotates with any wrong movement, is inconvenient, any mistake when searching for the desired function - and all efforts are in vain, as they say. This is not modern, and clearly not suitable for advanced motorists. The conclusion suggests itself: the Jetta sedan is a great player, but makes adjustments from a different parallelism of reality with unusual elements; Astra - does not reach the required consumer level, but for trying it is worthy of respect.

Opel Astra or Volkswagen Jetta: who is more hospitable?

Volkswagen Jetta. The spaciousness of the salon and the sofa impresses with its splendor and luxury. We can safely say that this car can be attributed to the models of the highest classification. The unexpected freedom for legs and knees is stunning. I just want to ask the tallest person, two meters tall, to sit down and evaluate the geometry of the Volkswagen. Invited, asked, seated - appreciated! Not a single complaint was received.

However, if three passengers sit on the sofa, then the comfort will fall, the center tunnel will interfere. This is the fee for such a chic Volkswagen all-wheel drive platform. But, in the “shoulders” it doesn’t press anywhere, the rear doors are equipped with comfortable armrests. If two are sitting, not three, then there is more than enough space. Plus a wide inter-seat armrest to better appreciate comfort. Unfortunately, for passengers sitting behind the driver, the convenience ends there.

Opel Astra. At the rear, there is a retractable container and a 12-volt outlet for passengers. Three oversized saddles can fit on the seat. But, landing in the back seat of three guests is already a feat, the roof, littered in a hatchback style and an incredibly high threshold, interferes. It will not work to fall apart “in Volkswagen style” - extensive armrests interfere. And that's not all the difficulties. There is not enough legroom, and this is all from the fact that the wheelbase is unsuccessfully located. Conclusion: for transportation with comfort, Volkswagen Jetta is preferable.

What is more spacious and practical?

Take, for example, an ordinary resident of a metropolis who left the store with purchases. He has a long length in his hands and at the same time it is very heavy, which must be put in the trunk of a car. So, which car will become a real helper in a difficult situation: Jetta sedan or Astra hatchback.

Aster. In order to open the trunk, you can choose two methods: find the desired button on the key and press it, or open the car doors and look for the desired button on the console. Of course, in order to perform any maneuver, you will have to leave the purchase and start opening the trunk. Somehow not very convenient, right?

Jetta. Everything is much simpler here. The button for opening the trunk compartment is located according to the classical scheme, but you still need to remove the vehicle from the alarm, otherwise nothing will work. You can also open it from inside the car. The only advantage over the Astra is the non-bouncing of the cargo compartment lid, but a smooth and moderate lifting. The rain is not terrible, is it convenient?

In order to transport long lengths, both cars are equipped with hatches. However, there is a difference. In Opel, a triangle suspended on a loop makes it possible to open, in Volkswagen - on plastic in the hands of the car owner. For those who lack only one hatch: for the Jetta - pull the handle from the cargo compartment of the car and, using muscle strength, push the back of the seat; at Opel - everything is simple and clear, in the spirit of European traditions.

Opel Astra or Volkswagen Jetta: engine is power

For those who save, both cars have units without an inflatable version with a volume of 1.6 liters, which can be controlled both by mechanics and by automatic. Although the Astra engine is ten times stronger in power, the Jetta is fast. The Jetta boasts a nimble hydraulic performance, 1.5 seconds faster than the Astra. A person who buys a car for himself to drive should pay special attention to turbo engines, which should be of the same volume. When buying a Volkswagen Jetta, you can choose between two versions: a turbine engine for 122 or 150 horses.

It is worth noting that any of the versions makes it possible to squeeze the clutch itself or provide this work to a box with a multi-disk double-clutch module. If you look from the point of view of comfort, all this is useless, but if you are a fan of a good ride with a sharp lead from the start, then this option is most suitable for you. The start without axle boxes takes almost 10 seconds, and in more powerful versions - in just over 8.

How will Opel manufacturers answer us? Turbo - the “four” in terms of power can only be combined with a 6-speed hydraulic mechanism, lovers of dynamic driving should tune the engine and gearbox. But any version, even the most sophisticated, is much inferior to the Jetta. Astra's record is 9.2 seconds to 100 km / h, more modest than the Volkswagen model.

Opel Astra or Volkswagen Jetta: better on corners

Volkswagen Jetta. Any driver of this brand should always remember which engine is under the hood. Thoroughbred lever with excellent elastokinematics - designed for countries developed in the field of auto-civilization. Naturally aspirated, archaic engine - for a more relaxed ride within the boundaries of ordinary Russian cities, but no one bothers to drive fast. The sedan is endowed with multi-link rail confidence, which allows you to drive confidently and purposefully. However, do not trust electronics, the best thing is the concentration of attention, it will not hurt.

Opel Astra. The mechanics are simple and independent of the power of the engine. Even the most powerful models are equipped with a semi-dependent tightening circuit, which is reliable and convenient, and much better in control. Opel will not make mistakes, but there will not be much pleasure either.

Opel Astra or Volkswagen Jetta: bumps and bumps on the road

The Jetta sedan tends to react sharply to bumps, and convey similar feelings of inconvenience to its passengers. The harder the wheel hit, the more shaking in the cabin. It is not recommended to buy special wheels to travel comfortably, because. discomfort is directly related to the amount of space occupied in the passenger compartment. But the suspension is surprising, it is better than its counterparts and glides over an uneven track, like on waves. The microclimate is also not very happy, in the cold season - the first 10 km will be torture. Further - better, but not much.

Astra is the antipode of Volkswagen in a sedan body, since the stove works better, pits and bumps are nothing, which means maximum comfort for seated passengers in a car. But there are also unpleasant moments. Transparent, even too much, wheel arches. And this car is noisier than the Jetta sedan. If not for these two shortcomings, then a well-deserved victory would have gone to Astra.

Opel Astra or Volkswagen Jetta: testing

Both machines are tested according to the protocol of the European charter, i.e. cars cling to a catapult, reach speeds of up to 65 km / h and here it is, a barrier to impact. And this test, both cars passed perfectly. However, it was not without nuances: the Jetta showed the best result in a collision with a barrier and won in the “child safety” nomination, and the Opel Astra withstood an excellent side impact. All this happened at the highest level. For general safety, the Astra is equipped with a stabilization system, but you will have to pay a tidy sum for the “curtains” (this only applies to the Opel Cosmo). For Jetta purchasers, all air-runs are available in Tradeline.

Opel Astra or Volkswagen Jetta: cost and equipment

As advertisers say, for a tricked-out Opel, the buyer will have to pay about 675,000 rubles. This price includes: mechanics, base engine power with 1.6 liter engine capacity, 4 airbags and ESP, air conditioning, heating of the driver's seat and the passenger in front, front power windows, steel wheels, more or less audio system and alarm. For a Jetta sedan, you will have to pay a more substantial amount - 702,000 rubles. Astra-Cosmos with a turbo engine - about 913 thousand. Which is better - to choose the buyer.

The choice is yours!

In general, there are many options for buying models with various functions and packages of additional services, everyone chooses what suits him in terms of finances, but do not forget about style. The intricacy and complex structure of both cars does not fully understand the cost of a particular model. The Jetta sedan is better and more expensive, but not by much, while the Astra has a balanced price tag and, moreover, a rich arsenal of bells and whistles.

For car markets, a more independent model is the Jetta sedan. And this is not surprising. The Hispanic German outpaced the Astra in a disciplined ride to take the win. Astra, in turn, presented itself better and more worthily, delighting many with a good smooth ride and sophistication of design ideas, because. showed a natural reflection of all the pluses of the car. The main thing is that Opel has achieved its advantages, thanks to a reasonable price and affordable equipment. It is worth noting that the Russian assembly played an important role in the matter.

Whom to prefer for joint life? Beautiful, smart, with excellent manners, but with great demands, or modest, quiet, but very reliable? We are talking about used VW Golf 4 and G.

Evolution and Revolution
Golf 4 appeared on the market in 1997. The model, compared with its predecessor Golf 3, is evolutionary. There were no cardinal changes in design, and in technology, by and large, too. But this did not prevent the car from being successfully sold all over the world.

A big step forward for the company. A completely new design that has nothing to do with the previous Astra, and most importantly - a 12-year warranty against through corrosion of the body.
Both cars sold well in Russia, so the number of "our" copies on the market is quite large.

The Golf was produced in three- or five-door hatchback and station wagon variants. A guarantee against through corrosion of a body - 12 years. On a paint and varnish covering - 3 years. These terms are quite real, and there are no problems with the body. On some cars, water flows into the taillights, but a tube of sealant and skillful hands can easily cope with trouble. Salon Golf looks very luxurious for a small class car. So far, no one has outdone the quality of the fit of the panels and the materials used. You can play the game "find 10 differences from VW Passat". Difference number 1 is the cramped rear seat. Despite the assurances of the designers, sitting there is worse than in its predecessor. There is not enough legroom, tight shoulders ... Even the VW Polo is more "friendly" to the rear passengers!

Visibility is not bad, but the right mirror was created at the request of "set up" on the roads. It is small, and it is almost impossible to see the interference on the starboard side. The undoubted advantage of the Golf is the equipment. Buyers both here and in Europe rarely ordered basic Golfs. Climate control, all kinds of heating - the norm rather than the exception. And at night, VW pleases with a stylish blue-red illumination of the instrument panel. What can be broken inside? The cup holder and rear ashtray rarely last more than a year, and it doesn't hurt to check their operation upon inspection. As well as the serviceability of door locks. They often "buggy", and branded service stations treat them only with a replacement ($ 70 - a lock, $ 45 - a replacement). Golf suffers from the fact that the filter in the ventilation system is too good. It needs to be changed ($50 filter, $10 replacement) twice a year, in autumn and late spring. One Russian summer clogs it completely, and instead of a powerful hurricane, miserable breezes walk in the deflectors. Washers of glasses and headlights do not belong to centenarians. In the wiper mechanism, the lever axes turn sour, which leads to a breakdown of the electric motor or drive parts. To prevent trouble, it is better to disassemble and lubricate the mechanism once a year. A couple of years ago, gray dealers imported a batch of cars intended for the Turkish market. It is best to avoid them and check the body VIN before buying. It can be used to determine for which importer the car was made.

With the Astra model, Opel for the first time gave a worthy answer to the VAG concern. The same 12 year warranty against corrosion and 3 years for paint. And the same confidence in the fulfillment of these norms. Even the oldest cars show no signs of corrosion. It's not just about galvanizing the body. Opels rarely rot on the outside, usually they rust on the inside and along the welds. At Astra G, all hidden cavities are treated with anticorrosive at the factory, and the welds are carefully sealed. If the car does not get into a serious accident, it will live for 20-25 years before being scrapped.

Salon Astra is also good, but after the Golf is not impressive. There is no chic in it, brilliance in trifles. And the finishing materials are inexpensive. In addition, over time, in some machines, a genetic code called a "rattle" reminds of itself. Not Kadett, of course, Golf's will be quieter. But the back seat of the Opel is much more comfortable. There are more places, and two people will not dream of any Vectra and Omega.

On a stubby "golf" Astra mirror responds with limited visibility. Wide rear pillars make you nervous when reversing. Astra wins in trunk volume. Station wagon Astra, perhaps, the best "freight carrier" in this class.

The weaker the better
The engine range of the Golf 4 has little in common with the Golf 3. The base engine is an aluminum 1.4-liter, but the most popular has a volume of 1.6 liters. Most of these cars. Much less with 1.8 and 2.0 engines. "Five" 2.3 and "six" 2.8 - from the category of exotic, but there are many diesels. On cars in this class, VW diesels are the best in the world. And this conviction cannot be spoiled by any Russian diesel fuel.

There is no problem with petrol engines. If you do not replace the air filter in time ($25 - filter, $10 - work), there is a chance to get acquainted with the price of an air flow sensor ($300). The lambda probe ($245 - part, $20 - work) and candles ($45 - kit, $25 - work) suffer from our gasoline.

The 1.8T engine is close to replacing the turbine in 50% of cases ($1400 - part, $165 - labor). Pleasure is not cheap, so when diagnosing, special attention should be paid to this node. If the machine is less than three years old, the manufacturer pays the full cost of the part. Such a gift is called post-warranty support and is valid for all branded service stations.

An oil change for gasoline engines is recommended every 15,000 km, a timing belt ($ 140 - belt and rollers, $ 110 - work) - 90,000 km. It is better not to reach this period, but to replace it a little earlier. There have been troubles in the form of “kisses” of valves with pistons, and you should not repeat other people's mistakes. Engines 2.3 and 2.8 have a camshaft chain drive.

Diesel engines are only 1.9-liter, but there are a lot of power options. The base atmospheric develops 68 hp. With. He does not have a turbine, the degree of forcing is small, so he is not as picky about the quality of fuel and oil as his powerful brothers. VW turbodiesels are fantastic units in terms of acceleration dynamics and fuel efficiency. However, they need to be monitored. Daily checking of the oil level is a must. Motors do not complain about the lack of oil appetite even in infancy, and topping up between maintenance is not a sign of a "tired" unit. The fuel filter ($25 - filter, $10 - work) is changed every 30,000 km, but it is possible and necessary earlier. Air ($ 30 filter, $ 10 - replacement) it makes sense to change every 10,000 km. Otherwise, you will need to replace the air flow sensor ($300 sensor + $30 work). Any VW turbodiesel is critical to the quality of oil and fuel. And don't forget about oil changes! In our conditions, the manufacturer recommends doing this every 7500 km. For comparison, in Europe, "oil maintenance" is sometimes extended to 50,000 km. Our miserable 7500 km testify to the fact that there is too little fuel in our sulfur at gas stations.

A separate topic is "fresh" diesel engines with pump nozzles. For them, there is a special permit for the quality of the oil, and for fuel it would not hurt to introduce it. One injector pump costs about $1,000. Conclusion: refuel only at "targeted" gas stations and keep receipts. Typically a TDI from Europe has crazy mileage. 300,000 km for a three-year-old car is a matter of course. Gearboxes on the VW Golf are the simplest. Either a manual transmission or a conventional automatic. "Under the curtain" a 6-speed manual was installed on the car. They do not have characteristic malfunctions, only on a 1.6-liter engine a mechanical gearbox sometimes fails. Symptoms: increased noise, vibrations.

The power units are no less. From a weak 1.2-liter to a powerful 2.2-liter. All of them are four-cylinder, there were no six-cylinder engines in the range. The base 1.2-liter was not in demand in Russia. But on cars from Europe it is found. There is no need to be afraid of him. As a women's version on three-door hatchbacks, it looks convincing. Fuel consumption is low, there is a chain in the timing drive, and as for the dynamics ... you need to be calmer, calmer.

The most popular engine on the Astra is a 1.6-liter 16-valve. But popular doesn't mean best. From our gasoline, candles often fail ($ 12 per set), the injection system is weird. By the way, to change the candles (every 40,000 km), you need to remove the intake manifold. Sometimes there is an increased oil appetite, which is eliminated by expensive (up to $ 800) repairs. Its 8-valve counterpart is not as powerful, but much easier to operate. Of the common diseases, the exhaust gas recirculation valve ($145 - part, $25 - replacement) and the idle valve ($110 - part, $25 - work) were noted.

They get clogged from our fuel, so experienced owners remove and clean them every 20-30 thousand. Then you can not think about replacement.

Untimely replacement of candles on all engines threatens with the failure of the ignition coil ($165 coil + $15 replacement). Timing belt replacement ($150 parts, $65 labor) - every 60,000 km. It is necessary to change with rollers, at the second replacement - with a water pump. And do not forget about flushing the injection system every 40-50 thousand.

Fans of diesel engines Astra pleases with two options: the Japanese Isuzu with a volume of 1.7 liters and the native two-liter. "Japanese" - the most traditional design. This engine has its pedigree from "Kadet" motors, and over the years the design has been worked out "to the ring". The engine is soft in character: good traction "at the bottom", smooth spin up to maximum speed. Its power is small, but reliability, resource - is beyond praise. And he is picky about fuel. The timing belt and rollers are more expensive than for gasoline engines, but replacement is required every 100,000 km. The "Opelevsky" 2.0-liter turbodiesel is technically more difficult, but it has a camshaft chain drive. At about 50,000 km, the air flow sensor fails ($ 250). If you change the air filter on time or a little more often ($ 16 - filter, $ 4 - replacement), its life can be extended. Turbine activation valve ($250) dies after a decent run on our roads. Oil change in diesel engines - every 10,000 km.

In the exhaust system, after two Russian winters, the rear bank ($ 130 part + $ 20 work) of the muffler rusts. However, the Golf suffers from the same ($240 part + $20 work).

The classic dies last
The sweetest thing about all used car descriptions is the suspension. The music of broken ball joints and silent blocks on our roads will be eternal. But with regard to the Golf and Astra, there is not much to talk about. It's all about the design schemes and materials. There are no fashionable multi-links, no aluminum. Familiar steel, McPherson front, rear beam.

But even this "stove" has something to "dance" from. Let's start with Golf. Racks ($40 parts + $25 replacement) and stabilizer bushings ($30 parts + $25 replacement) anti-roll bars live about 40 thousand km. By 80 thousand km, tie rods ($275 parts + $60 work) usually develop a resource, and by 100 thousand km - wheel bearings ($213 parts + $55 replacement), ball bearings ($110 parts + $45 work) and shock absorbers ($340 parts + $100 labor). Silent blocks are quite tenacious. There are often unfounded claims to the steering. Reiki leak or knock is a popular phenomenon. A new rail costs $720 plus $100 labor. With diesel engines, the suspension dies faster. They weigh more, hence the wear.

Astra has always been better than Golf in terms of suspension reliability. So it is in this generation. The resource of parts of the "opel" suspension is higher. For those wondering why: the ball joint for the Astra G is identical to that of the Omega B! Comments are superfluous. In general, the picture is similar to the "golf". Every 30-40 thousand - replacement of stabilizer struts ($20 parts + $20 labor), to 100 thousand - steering rods ($40 for 1 piece + $65 replacement), tips ($35 for 1 piece + $17 labor) , after 120-130 thousand - ball bearings, shock absorbers and wheel bearings ($ 250 for 1 piece + $ 50). The common misconception about the unreliability of the rear springs is not entirely true.

The steering mechanism uses an electric power steering. A barely audible howl during his work is the norm, and there is nothing wrong with that.

On the Astra, as well as on the Golf, there are replacement steering racks ($1000 + $100). But less often.

The brakes were once a bad story. The Bosch rear calipers turned sour after a short run, so they were urgently replaced with Lucas. If the car for some reason did not pass the replacement campaign, get ready to carry it out yourself.

"Sweet" options
For lovers of exotic Opel releases two options: Astra Coupe and Astra Cabriolet. Both machines are assembled at the Bertone factory in Italy. They are distinguished by rich interior decoration, an extensive list of standard equipment and a spectacular appearance. Efficiency meets efficiency: the 2.0-liter Turbo develops 190 hp. This is enough to accelerate the Astra Coupe to 245 km/h.

There was another extreme: Astra Eco 4. A 1.7-liter diesel engine develops 75 hp. and is content with 4.4 l / 100 km in the combined cycle.

The Golf has many more interesting modifications. For example, a sedan based on it has a proper name: Bora. The original optics and the nuances of the equipment "bring" both cars into different classes. Bora is not just a Golf with a trunk. Bora is a small sedan in its own right with very big ambitions. Therefore, the interior trim is richer, and it is better equipped.

There is a Bora station wagon. Rarity on the market: most buyers did not see the difference between Bora Variant and Golf Variant. There were few people willing to overpay for nameplates.

Four-wheel drive is a long and very good VW tradition. Instead of a visco clutch on the Golf 4, an electronically controlled Haldex clutch was used. From this Golf 4Motion did not go like Subaru Impreza, but added to the predictability of reactions. There is no need to be afraid of the all-wheel drive system. It is much more important that the rear suspension on all-wheel drive modifications is independent and has nothing to do with the usual one in design. Spare parts for it are more expensive, and there will be problems with the search.

The Golf GTI is another equally successful VW tradition. Cars in the GTI version are distinguished by a sports suspension, seats and decorative details. The car drives and looks great.

But the fastest Golf is the Golf R32. V6 3.2, 240 HP Behind these reductions are hidden 250 km / h and 6.5 s. up to 100 km/h. "Cannon", from which VW fired towards Alfa GTA and other "charged" ... There was another athlete. The one at the gas station is in the same row with the trucks. 150 HP from diesel 1896 cm3 - only VW achieved this.

level of nuance
Choosing a used car is always like racing. You can bet on a proven leader, but the winnings will be small. Or you can take a chance, bet on a dark horse and win a fortune. Astra G is the dark horse that brought Opel to victory. The previous model was no worse than the VW Golf. The only problem was in the body: it rusted quickly. Astra G is no worse than VW Golf 4. And does not rust. Any questions? Yes, I have. The high quality of Astra G is known not only to a narrow circle of Opel station workers. Therefore, it is not much cheaper than the Golf. With this factor in mind, a clear picture emerges. If you need a solid European car with a spacious interior and trunk, inexpensive to maintain and hardy to operate, this is Astra G. Especially with an 8-valve 1.6-liter engine. In addition, the prices for original spare parts and services from Opel service stations are lower than those of VW.

When the requirements for the car are higher (powerful engine, high-quality interior trim) and the comfort of the rear passengers is not very important - this is the Golf. By the way, they did not install climate control, only mechanical air conditioning. For some, this will be a big disadvantage.

As for diesels, the choice is similar here. Astra G with a 1.7-liter turbodiesel acts as an unpretentious workhorse. Golf TDI - as a street racer. Please note that the operating costs of a powerful TDI are higher.

Of all the cars that are on the market, it is better to choose those purchased at one time from official dealers in Russia. They have native mileage in most cases, and the suspension is adapted.

And finally - about the choice of class. If someone is tormented by agony: Golf / Passat or Astra / Vectra, feel free to take the "little ones". They are simpler in design and deliver much less hassle in operation.
Happy shopping!
