A huge armrest (it’s good that a lot of things will fit in there, it’s bad that you gradually put everything that comes to hand there). Roomy. If you fold the second row (everything is very thoughtful and simple), you get a flat floor, two adults (for example, on a fishing trip) will be able to spend the night, I would say very comfortable. This winter we went to rest, 6 adults and Thule on the roof, drove without problems and fatigue, Toyota Highlander rides confidently in the snow. I traveled everywhere, I was very pleased with the cross-country ability (at least I drove where the X5 could not). From the house (where they lived) to the slope, they loaded skis into Thule and drove 3 km for 10-13 people (in crowded conditions, but better than on foot).

Cons: weak brakes, more precisely, when driving intensively, the brake discs overheat, as a result of which they are driven, the steering wheel beats - replacement. After the replacement, I drive calmly (I'm getting used to it) - there have been no problems since July last year. On Toyota Highlander you need to drive without frequent "braking" from high speed, impressively, despite the fact that there is enough power and you can drive. Music - everything is bad, especially the rear speakers - they can't do anything at all, above average - they rattle, it's impossible to listen. Perhaps someone JBL is different. Navigation - it is dangerous to believe it. Rain sensor - often lives its own life, still has not understood the algorithm of its operation. The trunk lid - all winter (exclusively in cold weather) composted the brain, then did not open, then did not close. I sprayed with silicone - nothing helps, at the first frost I will change the electric drive motor under warranty, but this (according to the dealer) will not help. Gear changes are almost not felt, everything is very smooth. I think that's how it should be. Consumption depends on the driving style (everyone is probably tired of this phrase), but it's true. In Moscow, without traffic jams, about 12, with them up to 20, on the highway 9-10, if you can feel sick, you can meet 7.5 in a short stretch. Once again, I am not a racer. Noise isolation is excellent, in any case, it was enough for me, I didn’t drive a German “troika”, but I think the Shumka is above average here for sure. The engine in the Toyota Highlander is not annoying, all the noise comes mainly from the wheels. In general, the interior is not explosive. There was only one cricket - it was fixed under warranty (more on that below). Places inside in bulk, both in the cabin and in the trunk, the third row has never laid out. The seats are not bad, not the best, but not bad, the leather is of good quality. The interior has many different pockets and drawers for small items. Under the glove compartment there is a recess in the form of a pocket for an umbrella. The on-board computer is combined with a touch LCD display, which displays information about the state of the car and the settings of the standard multimedia system.

The engine range consists of two units. The first is a 2362 cc inline four-cylinder with 160 horsepower, twin camshafts, four valves per cylinder and an alloy head. The second more powerful V-shaped six-cylinder with a volume of 2994 cm³ with a capacity of 220 horsepower. Cars with an in-line 2.4-liter engine were produced with front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, with a 3-liter engine - only with permanent all-wheel drive and a self-locking limited-slip center differential (LSD).

In 2004, both engines were replaced by a 3.3-liter V6 with 215 horsepower.

Initially, the car was equipped only with a 4-speed automatic transmission "Super ECT", a manual gearshift mechanism was offered as an option. In 2004, a five-speed automatic transmission began to be installed on models with a V6 engine.

Both suspensions, front and rear, are independent, McPherson type. The car is equipped with smart electronic systems: anti-lock braking system ABS (Anti-Blocking System), electronic brake force distribution EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution), pressure control system in the hydraulic brake system BAS (Brake Assist System), automatic slip control system TRC ( TRaction Control) and VSC (Vehicle Stability Control). Since 2004, a tire pressure monitoring system has become standard.

The Highlander of the first years of production was produced only in a five-seat version, but in 2004 an elongated version with the prefix "L" and three rows of seats saw the light. The second row had a removable central seat, so it can be double or triple. When the central seat is removed, there are two separate comfortable chairs with individual armrests and a passage between them to the third row of seats, which can also be made in both three- and two-seater versions. The second row of seats can be moved forward and backward, so that the legroom for passengers in the second and third rows can vary from 740 to 1021 mm. The luggage compartment is transformed using a special system with control levers, for additional easy access to it, the glass in the rear door opens.

All-wheel drive Toyota Highlander Hybrid appeared in 2004. The car was equipped with a powerful hybrid engine of the new THS II system and an E-Four electric transmission. The THS II hybrid powertrain is located at the front of the body, it includes a 3.3-liter V6 engine that develops a maximum power of 211 hp. With. and a 167 hp high-speed high-voltage electric motor. At the rear is another 68 horsepower electric motor, which is an integral component of the E-Four drivetrain. The power plant produces power up to 272 horsepower, and consumption in 10/15 mode is only 5.6 liters of gasoline per 100 km.

The second generation car debuted at the Chicago Auto Show and went on sale in 2008. Highlander has grown in size, received new headlights of an interesting and unusual shape, a new spectacular radiator grille, a modern bumper with a chrome strip at the bottom and stylish foglights. Ground clearance has increased to 206 mm.

The car has a leather interior, pseudo-wood trim, three-zone climate control, parking sensors, a rear-view camera, heated seats, a radio with a CD changer, electric drives, a color monitor with a “Touch screen” function and is equipped with a wide range of active and passive safety equipment, which includes seven airbags, including knee protection for the driver and side airbags for passengers.

Under the hood is a 3.5-liter V-shaped six-cylinder engine with a capacity of 273 horsepower. The engine is paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission.

At the end of August 2010, a restyled version of the Toyota Highlander debuted, and it also became known that this car would be officially delivered to Russia and become an intermediate link in the chain: RAV4 and Prado.

Technically, the restyled Highlander is almost the same as the second generation car. As befits an SUV, it is built on a lightweight chassis and a light platform (in this case, from Toyota Camry). There are no downshifts or locks in the transmission - Highlander is equipped with permanent and symmetrical (50:50) all-wheel drive without any frills. No downshifts or lockups. Management is at the mercy of electronics. The ground clearance of 206 mm allows not only to move on the asphalt, but also to move out to the country road.

The front end with a faceted false radiator grille is trimmed with chrome. Regardless of the version chosen, the road is illuminated by bi-xenon headlights. The rear fog lamp relies only on Toyota Highlander adapted for Russia and is included in the list of standard options. It is worth noting another feature of the "Russian" Highlanders - more rigid shock absorbers, which allow you to more clearly work out bumps and confidently, without buildup, keep the course.

Ergonomics of the cabin at the highest level. The rate in the interior design is made on conservative values. The dashboard with two wells, framed in aluminum, is informative and perfectly readable at any time of the day. With seven passengers on board, the trunk volume does not exceed 290 liters. But in the five-seater version, it increases to 1200 liters, with the sofa folded it exceeds two cubic meters. In all versions, the car has an electric tailgate.

Toyota Highlander is sold in two versions, which differ only in the number of additional equipment. The first is called "Prestige", and the second "Lux". In both modifications, under the hood is a 3.5-liter gasoline engine with a Dual VVT-i dual electronic variable valve timing system. and a power of 273 hp. The engine is equipped with a 5-speed automatic transmission. With such a motor, the car is able to accelerate to a speed of 100 km / h in 8.2 seconds, and its maximum speed will be 180 km / h. Despite more power and all-wheel drive, fuel consumption is only 10.7 liters per hundred kilometers when driving on the highway, and accordingly increases by 3.1 liters when driving in the urban cycle.

Reliable and safe driving is ensured by: anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic brake force distribution (EBD) with brake assist (BAS), traction control (TRC), vehicle stability control (VSC), hill assist (HAC) , Hill Descent Assist (DAC). And to protect the driver and passengers, the cabin is equipped with active head restraints, front and side airbags, side curtains, there is even an airbag for the driver's knees.

The world premiere of the third generation Toyota Highlander 2014 took place in 2013 at the New York Auto Show. It should be noted right away that now the crossover has completely different body dimensions due to the ability to accommodate not 7, as it was before, but 8 passengers. By the way, the current generation of the Highlander is based on the stretched platform of the Camry sedan, complemented by elements from the Lexus RX.

According to representatives of Toyota, the novelty was developed taking into account all the wishes of owners and lovers of large crossovers and SUVs. The technical characteristics of the Toyota Highlander 2014 regarding engines have not undergone almost any changes. The crossover will also come with two petrol engines and one hybrid engine:

• As a base engine, a four-cylinder 1AR-FE gasoline unit with a volume of 2.7 liters is offered, capable of developing power up to 188 hp. at 5800 rpm. Constructed on the basis of an alloy cylinder head and an alloy block, it fully meets the environmental requirements of the Euro-5 standard. In addition, the engine is equipped with a dual electronic variable valve timing system and a 16-valve timing belt with a chain drive. The motor is able to accelerate the car to the first hundred in 10.3 seconds, the maximum speed of the crossover will be 180 km / h, with a combined fuel consumption of 10.7 liters. This engine is installed only on the Highlander 2014 with front-wheel drive; a new 6-speed “automatic” is provided as a gearbox, which replaced the old 5-band automatic transmission.
• The second gasoline six-cylinder V-shaped engine 2GR-FE with a volume of 3.5 liters was nevertheless slightly modified, and for our market, in order to reduce the tax costs of customers, its power was reduced to 249 hp, which it is capable of developing at 6200 rpm in minute. Like its younger representative, this engine is equipped with a dual variable valve timing system, but already has a 24-valve timing. From 0 to 100 km / h, the Highlander will accelerate in 8.7 seconds, the maximum speed will also be 180 km / h. The AI-95 fuel consumption, according to the data in the passport, will be 10.6 liters. The flagship unit is installed only on the Highlander 2014 with all-wheel drive, it is aggregated by the same 6-band automatic transmission.
• The hybrid version of the Toyota Highlander combines a 3.5-liter V-twin gasoline engine with an electric generator, its power will be 141 hp. The engine is installed only on the all-wheel drive version of the Highlander and is paired with a CVT variator. As for fuel consumption, in the combined cycle this figure is 8.4 liters per 100 kilometers.

Other technical components

To begin with, it is worth saying a few words about the Highlander's all-wheel drive. Now it has a different scheme and is based on the JTEKT electromagnetic clutch, and if earlier all-wheel drive was permanent, now it is connected (when the front axle slips, the rear wheels are connected), and the torque is distributed in a ratio of 50 to 50.

The front suspension of the new generation Highlander remained the same, but the architecture of the rear suspension was significantly changed due to an increase in the width of the cabin at the rear of the car by 11 cm. Instead of MacPherson struts, a compact multi-link is now installed at the rear. The electric power steering also received new brains.
