The new all-terrain station wagon Volvo B60 Cross Country is officially presented on September 25, 2018 on the eve of the world premiere. In our review of the 2018-2019 Volvo V60 Cross Country - photos and videos, price and equipment, technical specifications of a station wagon raised above the road with 210 mm ground clearance, standard all-wheel drive and a plastic protective suit around the lower perimeter of the body. The default novelty is the brother of the usual one, presented in the spring of 2018 at the Geneva Motor Show.

Production of the new Volvo V60 Cross Country will start at the end of 2018 at Torslanda's facility in Gothenburg, Sweden. Reception of orders for the “sixty” with a station wagon and the Cross Country prefix in Europe opens in early 2019 at price from 52,350 euros for a diesel Volvo V60 Cross Country D4 AWD (190-horsepower turbo diesel, 8 automatic transmissions and all-wheel drive). It is gratifying that, unlike the regular Volvo V60 station wagon, which is not planned to be sold in Russia, the elevated Volvo V60 Cross Country station wagon will appear on the Russian market, and possibly already in the spring of 2019.

It is immediately necessary to find and indicate the differences between the usual V60 station wagon and the V60 Cross Country version:

  • firstly, it is, of course, the ground clearance increased by as much as 75 mm to an impressive figure of 210 mm;
  • secondly, a powerful plastic body kit around the perimeter of the body of the "sixties" Cross Country, protecting the lower parts of the front and rear bumpers, the edges of the wheel arches and the thresholds from minor damage when driving off-road;
  • thirdly, the rear bumper is additionally equipped with a powerful protective chrome plate and bifurcated exhaust pipes, which replaced the trapezoidal exhaust pipes of a conventional station wagon;
  • fourthly, the all-terrain station wagon is standardly equipped with 18-inch rims with 215/55 R18 tires (larger 19-20 inch wheels with 235/45 R19 and 245/40 R20 tires, respectively, are offered for a fee).

These are the details that can be seen without difficulty during an external examination of the body of the novelty. However, in the presence of a lot of other improvements invisible to the eye. The all-terrain Volvo V60 Cross Country is based on the modular SPA platform, which makes the novelty related not only to the brothers - the Volvo V60 station wagon and, but also to the crossovers and, as well as to the larger Volvo models -, and the all-terrain station wagon.

Thus, with an eye to the older brother of the Volvo V90 Cross Country, which received a lot of improvements to the chassis compared to the usual 90-series wagon, it can be said with 100% probability that the suspension of the Volvo V60 Cross Country has been significantly improved compared to the chassis of the Volvo V60 station wagon.

The all-terrain station wagon is equipped with original springs, shock absorbers and stabilizers that can ensure comfortable and stable behavior of the car on any type of road with various surfaces. Adaptive dampers and air suspension are offered for a surcharge. In the presence of all-wheel drive AWD and Off-Road mode, prescribed in the settings of the driving electronics.

The five-seat saloon of the Volvo V60 Cross Country wagon raised above the road exactly repeats the interior decoration of the usual Volvo V60 wagon in expensive trim levels. As standard, the interior of the "sixty" Cross Country with a combined seat trim with fabric and artificial leather (all leather seat trim is available for an extra charge), a virtual instrument panel, an advanced Volvo Cars "Sensus Connect infotainment system with a 9.5-inch color touch screen (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Wi-Fi, 4-zone CleanZone climate control), comfortable seats for the driver and front passenger (electric drive, heating, ventilation, massage).

By default, the car is equipped with an automatic braking system with the function of detecting pedestrians, cyclists and animals. As an option, Pilot Assist is provided, operating at speeds up to 130 km / h (the car independently keeps in the lane and will not allow you to drive into the oncoming lane or to the side of the road), as well as an automatic braking system that is activated when an obstacle is detected in cross traffic when passing through intersections.

Explore in detail

Explore the V60 Cross Country in Detail

As expected, the debut of the "raised" version of the Volvo V60 station wagon, the Swedes did not postpone indefinitely. However, one can talk about elevation without any irony, because the declared clearance of the Cross Country modification is 210 mm - 75 mm more than that of. The developers promised the same indicator for the larger Volvo V90 Cross Country model, and the reality turned out to be only slightly worse: for the “ninetieth” station wagon, the bottom point of the bottom is 200 mm from the ground.

The company does not go into details, however, using the V90 Cross Country model as an example, it is easy to estimate the amount of improvements: the older brother, for the harmonious collaboration of springs, shock absorbers, stabilizers and tires on any type of surface, compared to the “civilian” version, about 200 characteristics were changed chassis. And both station wagons are based on the same SPA modular platform.

In addition to the plastic body kit, the Volvo V60 Cross Country has only four-wheel drive and Off-Road mode in the driving electronics settings: more torque is transmitted to the rear wheels, the hill descent assistant is turned on, the steering becomes lighter, and the reactions to the gas are softer. In addition, the "sixty" "in the base" has an automatic braking system with the functions of recognizing pedestrians, cyclists and large (more than a dog) animals.

For a surcharge, the car can be equipped with a semi-autonomous Pilot Assist system operating at speeds up to 130 km/h. On roads with distinguishable markings, it taxis within the lane, preventing it from entering the oncoming lane or the roadside: moreover, like the base "sixties", the algorithm has been adjusted in favor of more accurate work in corners. Another legacy option is an auto-brake system when obstacles are detected from the side at an intersection.

Volvo V60 Cross Country will be equipped with the same two-liter turbo-fours as other platform models. At the moment, two modifications have been announced: the T5 (250 hp) and D4 (190 hp) versions will be the first to enter the market. The only intrigue is whether the younger Cross Country will have hybrid versions of the T6 Twin Engine AWD (340 hp) and T8 Twin Engine AWD (390 hp) available for the regular “sixties”.

However, Volvo still has enough time to talk about the details: production at the Torslanda plant in Gothenburg, Sweden will begin in the winter, and the start of taking orders in Europe is expected in early 2019. The Moscow office of Volvo told Autoreview that the V60 Cross Country will certainly appear in Russia, but the exact dates have not yet been determined.

All-terrain wagons are a rare product on the automotive market. And to be even more precise, they can be counted on the fingers. One of the latest innovations in this "piece" segment was the Volvo V60 Cross Country

These cars are made for those who do not like crossovers with their high center of gravity and worse handling compared to cars, but at the same time want to have high ground clearance. In essence, an all-terrain wagon is a desire to combine the best of cars and crossovers. And the desire, I must say, is very practical and reasonable. On occasion, such a car can be driven off the road, and on asphalt it is controlled almost like a passenger model.

Contributes to the active movement in the traffic flow and the steering is quite sharp and has an impressive reactive force, sometimes it even seems that the steering wheel resists too actively. This becomes especially noticeable in the presence of rutting - then you have to hold it tightly in your hands. However, this fact does not spoil the overall positive impression. From row to row, the station wagon is rebuilt quickly, accurately and extremely reliably. And I imperceptibly begin to maneuver among the surrounding cars, and I do it as carefully and safely as possible - I don’t “cut off” anyone, I don’t approach anyone at a dangerous distance, because electronic assistants are not asleep. My pulse doesn't pick up one iota.

The station wagon flies along the highway like an arrow, and along the winding highway it moves steadily and practically without rolls, only the steering wheel would be a little easier for him ... However, an option is available to customers with which you can choose the effort on the steering wheel from three options. The chassis is superbly balanced. In slippery turns, the car is practically “neutral” - the drift phase is small.

But the wagon behaves even better in sliding. If you find a closed wide “ice” track where you can drive sweepingly, in rally style, the V60 Cross Country will be able to give a lot of pleasant minutes to an experienced driver (although turning off the stabilization system is not so easy, it is hidden in the wilds of the menu, and rightly so - there is nothing for anyone to put themselves and others at risk!). Having lost the electronic "collar", the wagon is set sideways "on time", and the sliding angle is ideally controlled by the "gas". If you want, drive economically, with light drifts, but if you want, set at least at a right angle. Moreover, if the car feels that the driver is losing control, it will still take the reins of power into its own hands. However, it does not interfere with an experienced driver. Shine!

Suspension is set rigidly. Small irregularities are almost not felt, but potholes and cracks pass onto the body with noticeable shocks. However, the level of vertical acceleration does not cause discomfort. On the second row, however, on a decently broken road, it shakes noticeably, but in general, passengers do not complain here either. And unlike most passenger cars, which are not characterized by high energy intensity, the V60 Cross Country holds a punch even on large pits and bumps. In addition, the chassis runs almost silently, which gives its operation a certain premium nobility.

But the soundproofing of this station wagon is worth devoting a separate paragraph to. Because it is very good - there is hardly a quieter car in this class, since even the well-known German "big three" does not muffle the rumble from the "rubber" as effectively as the "Scandinavian" does. Perfectly protects the station wagon and from wind noise at high speed. The engine sounds juicy and at the same time quietly even at high speeds.

So, Volvo got a unique car. And paradoxical. On the one hand, it gives an incredible feeling of calmness and security, on the other hand, it is able to give the driver "driving" pleasure. And one does not contradict the other at all. How the model designers managed to do this, I honestly do not understand. If we compare this model with the passenger "relatives" S60 and V60, as well as with the XC60 crossover of similar size, then the V60 Cross Country is controlled as well as a passenger car, but can drive on a broken dirt road no worse than an SUV. And that is why of all these options I would choose Cross Country. I can assume that as soon as other admirers of the Swedish brand (and not only them) try this car, it is this version of the station wagon that may even be in short supply - the car definitely has the makings of a bestseller.
