Until recently, only Lexus could afford something - a car that looks like a concept car! And what kind of name is this - C-HR ... This is not a Honda! Although, when you look at the new “SUV” from behind, you begin to doubt it.

Outside and inside

It felt like the brand's strict management was on vacation while the designers prepared the C-HR for market launch. One way or another, the freedom of action granted to them brought unexpectedly tasty and attractive fruits.

To give birth to such a car after so many years of producing the Camry, beloved by American retirees and Russian officials, is like Paul McCartney suddenly recording a drum and bass album. Only much better!

A coupe-like silhouette with disguised rear door handles (horizontal, by the way, just like on classic Zhiguli!), wheel arch “muscles”, some incredible conglomeration of lines in front and behind, headlights and lanterns “stretched” over the sidewalls ...

Nissan Juke, which once struck a bold image, now looks rather pale in comparison with the C-HR. It's even getting a little scary for auto design - what will you have to draw in another 10 years to make people turn their heads when they get used to C-HR?


By the way, this crossover has something to say to competitors in terms of practicality (this is Toyota!). Juke, Mazda CX-3, Peugeot 2008… they are all smaller! Moreover, the Japanese promise the most spacious interior in the class. Is it so in reality? You will be surprised, but it seems to be true. Behind the wheel of the new C-HR, even a 2-meter driver can easily accommodate. Of course, “by itself” he will not sit down very much, but still, the gallery is more spacious than in the same Juke.

Those who were waiting for an explosion of emotions not only from design, but also from driving, I have to disappoint. The technique and habits of the C-HR are very similar to the regular Auris.

The basic version is with a 1.2-liter petrol turbo engine with 116 horsepower and 186 Nm, with “mechanics” or a variator. In the city, on such a car, you can still stay in the stream, but it has nothing to do on the highway - acceleration is painfully sluggish, plus after 3,000 rpm the engine sounds frankly unpleasant, and a characteristic transmission howl is added to 4,000, apparently from the variator. And the consumption of 9 liters per 100 kilometers - is it worth all this suffering?


The alternative, however, is poor. Either a hybrid doomed to failure in Russia (the good old 122-horsepower 1.8 plus an electric motor), or an atmospheric 2.0 for 140 hp. With. The latter is most likely optimal for the C-HR, although there was no such car in European tests. Nothing more powerful and more fun is expected. It's a pity!


The chassis - to match the power units - is boring, it cannot stand comparison with the Dzhuk. In corners, rolls, steering with almost no feedback ... But in the pits it doesn’t shake much. The settings for Russia will certainly be rethought, but most likely we will get something tougher than the usual Corolla, but still a compromise.



What is the result?

So, a very bright car with the taste of Lexus and slight hints of Honda. With an interesting interior, excellent seats and frankly boring technical stuffing, designed for an inexperienced driver who just has to move from point A to point B without driver adventures, but spectacularly for others. Sounds like the perfect recipe for Russia! Moreover, competition in the form of the Nissan Juke mentioned here more than once is completely absent.


Toyota lovers, who have grown up in Russia for more than one generation, should be appreciated. The head of the family - Prado or Land Cruiser 200, the wife - RAV4 or Highlander, and the daughter, who has always dreamed of a shocking Mini, can just C-HR. Now the main thing is that there are enough quotas for us, and the price due to foreign origin would not turn out to be too biting.

At the International Geneva Motor Show in March 2016, the Japanese company Toyota presented to the general public a youth model: C-HR (the concept prototype of the same name was presented in the autumn of 2014 at the "bride" in Paris) is a representative of the fast-growing segment of subcompact crossovers.

The car, dressed in a striking design and inheriting a lot from the Prius, arrived on the European market in January 2017, and appeared in Russia on June 1, 2018 (“slowly” having passed all the necessary “certifications and adaptations”).

The strongly built and “muscular” appearance of the Toyota C-HR, entirely woven from contrasts, makes a pleasant impression, but you can’t exactly call the SUV a “written handsome man”.

The original appearance of the car is replete with bright and bold solutions - a daring "face" with complex optics and bizarre bumper shapes, a "compartment" silhouette with a soaring "window sill", hidden rear door handles and exaggerated wheel arches, and even an extraordinary feed with fanciful lanterns and faceted bumper.

In terms of external dimensions, the Toyota C-HR belongs to the subcompact crossover community: 4360 mm long, 1555 mm high and 1795 mm wide. The gap between the wheel pairs of the "Japanese" accounts for 2640 mm, and its ground clearance is 160 mm.

The interior of the SUV is focused on the "pilot" - a clear and informative "toolkit" with instrumentation-wells and a color screen of the on-board computer, a stylish three-spoke steering wheel with control elements and an asymmetric console deployed towards the driver in the center of the front panel with an 8-inch monitor of the Touch 2 multimedia system and a minimum number of buttons.

The interior of the car is distinguished by high quality workmanship and solid finishing materials - soft plastics, lacquered "decor", leatherette and genuine Nappa leather.

The front riders in the Toyota C-HR are offered ergonomic seats with a comfortable profile, good lateral supports and a wide range of adjustments, but for the rear passengers, not everything is so rosy - “everything is at a minimum”: the headroom is sacrificed for an actively falling roof in the style of a coupe, there is also no space in the knees, and even the central tunnel in the legs gets in the way.

The luggage compartment of the Japanese "off-road vehicle" is small - its volume in the "stowed" state is 370 liters. The rear sofa, “cut” into two unequal parts, folds up, significantly increasing the amount of free space for luggage.

On the Russian market, Toyota C-HR is offered with one of two gasoline power plants:

  • Under the hood of the basic version is a 1.2-liter four-cylinder turbo engine with direct injection, variable valve timing and 12-valve timing, developing 116 horsepower at 5200-5600 rpm and 185 Nm of peak thrust at 1500-4000 rpm.
  • The “top-end” modification boasts a 2.0-liter atmospheric “four” with a distributed “power” system, a 16-valve DOHC timing belt and a variable valve timing mechanism that produces 148 hp. at 6000 rpm and 189 Nm at 3800-4000 rpm.

The "younger" motor is combined by default with a 6-speed "mechanics" and a front-wheel drive transmission, and in an expensive version - with a CVT variator and an all-wheel drive system with a multi-plate clutch responsible for connecting (if necessary) the rear axle. As for the "senior" unit, it relies exclusively on a continuously variable gearbox, and leading front wheels.

The crossover takes 10.9-11.4 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h, and its “maximum speed” rests at 180-195 km / h.

In the combined cycle of movement, the five-door consumes from 5.9 to 6.9 liters of fuel for every “hundred” kilometers (depending on modification).

Toyota C-HR is the carrier of the modular platform "TNGA" (Toyota New Global Architecture) with extensive use of high-strength steel grades in the structure.

“In a circle” the car is equipped with independent suspensions - MacPherson struts in front and a “double-lever” rear (in both cases with transverse stabilizers).

By default, this SUV is equipped with a steering system with a rack and pinion mechanism and an electric booster, as well as four-wheel disc brakes, complemented by a set of modern electronics.

So far, the decision to start sales of Toyota C-HR in Russia has not been made, for which there are objective reasons. Certain obstacles are created by the lack of localization of production (the model is assembled in only one place - at a factory in the Turkish city of Sakarya).
