There is no more American SUV than the Ford Explorer. Other problems and malfunctions

21.09.2019

Well, Happy New Year everyone. And with the new course, too, at the same time. Ruble, dollar and euro, whatever you like.

By the time the national currency fell, the market of secondary vehicles came to life and suddenly a buyer was found for my 7-seater minivan Ford Smax. The liquidity of minivans is generally low, and therefore it was decided to definitely sell, and sell in favor of an all-wheel drive pepelats with high ground clearance and omnivorous suspension, because Petrozavodsk roads are not getting better, and there are also a lot of country roads in the vicinity of Petrozavodsk.

In addition, it was necessary to comply with the wife's requirement to accommodate three passengers in the second row; three separate seats and proper legroom for second-row passengers were desirable.

Strengths:

  • Big, safe, soft enough, rulitsya like a passenger car - no rolls, no demolitions, no nods.
  • Getting in and out is very convenient, unlike most frame SUVs

Weak sides:

  • fuel consumption, mediocre all-terrain qualities (although there is a reduced one).
  • poor visibility in reverse.

Review Ford Explorer 4.0 (Ford Explorer) 2004 Part 3

Everything ever comes to its logical end... It's time to say goodbye to Exp. And I wasn't going to, but I wanted something else. could be better in the price-quality ratio in this price range?

What's on the plus side. Frame, hardware, inexpensive spare parts, comfort and lack of interest among people of certain professions.

The minus for me is 4l (not enough) .. I'm looking for 4.6 now.

Weak sides:

Review Ford Explorer 4.0 (Ford Explorer) 2004 Part 2

Good time of the day! Soon a year, as I am on my Hippo. Recently (4 months) I changed the pump and stabilizer struts of the front original (1500r / piece + 800r work), bought the original sun visor (2560r) and painted the front bumper after winter (10.000r).

Having traveled to the Pacific decided to put Ford up for sale. I wanted to be taller and bigger again (what is the connection with Patya? - but no). I looked at the Yukon and sunk into a specific instance. But mine wasn’t for sale… I looked at Dishn 2 — it’s more interesting to me than the Yukons in general. Good offer, BUT MY IS NOT FOR SALE, not a single call!!! I went for diagnostics. Box, engine, chassis — everything is normal. But it's not for sale! I looked at Acura MDX, Dodge Durango (I liked it, especially the first one with spring suspension).

And then, during a heavy snowfall, he climbed through the snowdrifts and sowed a license plate somewhere. Went and changed to new ones. AND! You need a cow like this. To change the awl for soap - it makes no sense. And to take something else (such as Sequoia or Dishina2) - this is + 250-350t.r - now I do not have the opportunity to stick this money into the machine.

Strengths:

  • frame
  • Iron
  • Amerikos (price of spare parts and maintenance)
  • Amerikos (oak suspension)
  • Controllability
  • Comfort

Weak sides:

  • Year of issue
  • For someone, fuel consumption (and what do you want for a 2.5t car)
  • 4l rides quieter than 4.6, but tax!

Review of Ford Explorer 4.0 (Ford Explorer) 2004

So the time has come to get off the circled heavy truck-Expedishina. He left as he came - suddenly ... And then a problem arose. There is N-th amount of money, but I really want to travel. Taking a typewriter from a fighting friend is not comme il faut. Looked, from what for this minuscule it is possible to choose. And yet, the old dream of the Explorer has done its job. I started calling and watching. Rather view was two cars. One is a dealer European, the other is a pure American.

Looked first European. Pleasant hostess and the aura in the car is calm, relaxing, cozy. Only no interior. Rag, aluminum and minimalism. I felt uncomfortable after Dishin. I'm coming to see the Americans. Salon — leather light beige. All adjustments: front seats, pedals, 2-zone climate separate … radio with CD 6 discs … everything is fine and good condition. Money pulled pocket and thought I leaned towards the Americans. Didn't bargain, just took. Of course, on a calm head, it would be possible to slowly resolve the issue. But ... Although I brought a Ford service to one. And it was necessary to drive to Amurskaya ... But a smart thought comes after. On this instance, ABC lit up. Everything else is normal. Box repaired a year ago ...

Now sensations. After Dishin - a passenger car. Small and short. But the interior is better - there is no such slippery skin. The leather on the back and the perforated seat are nice. Handling is good, the steering wheel is informative (relative to D.), but tighter - you can’t twist it with your finger. Brakes are average. American. Good music. Acceptable. I am a supporter of the original and will not stick anything more fancy. The sound is decent. The third row is folded, not pulled out, as on Dishin (U173). It is convenient that there is a memory of adjustments for two positions ... And most importantly, I use the trunk for its intended purpose. In Dishin, everything folded and fit on and under the second row. Didn't make it to the trunk. Rear-wheel drive with connection and ponizhayka.

Strengths:

  • Everything in moderation

Weak sides:

  • Side mirrors

Review of Ford Explorer 4.6 (Ford Explorer) 2003

I can also confirm that it is driven no worse than the Tuareg (of course, within the range of up to 140 km, this is due to rubber, the profile is different), I even like the explorer more than the x5 53 body - not outwardly, but according to the sensations up to 140 km, then undoubtedly x5 and Tuareg is better. Why do I speak so confidently? I have owned an explorer for 3 years, and at the same time I bought x5 3l with it. turbo-diesel, so their acceleration is the same, up to 100 km - according to the passport, 8.2 seconds, which is enough for the eyes in the city, large bumps the explorer goes much better x5go - it’s goaty, but on small potholes the explorer trembles, which is not x5. But for 3 years, x5 ate 450 thousand from me during repairs, and the explorer only 65 thousand.

I fell in love with the explorer by accident: when x5 got stuck for repairs for a month, I switched to the explorer (and so my business partner rode it), so at first everything seemed miserable compared to x5, but after a week I began to notice many pluses, namely:

  • accelerates very well (I have it chipped, 7.5 seconds), the v8 engine is just a fairy tale,
  • ground clearance is higher than x5,
  • doors open more easily, boarding and disembarking is more convenient,
  • more space
  • Ford is not a pity to throw where you have to.

Why am I talking about x5 ... but because I wanted to buy a Tuareg, I came and looked at a 5 liter turbo diesel, drove it for an hour and realized - no, x5 is better ... and when the x5 was under repair, I realized that explorer is better than x5. Again, in turns and sharp maneuvers, these are different cars, but I didn’t feel much difference, but I like to drive.

More about the myth of high consumption. I installed gas equipment for myself, my v8 eats 20 liters of gas around the city, I refuel for 13 rubles. It turns out that this is only 10 liters of 92nd gasoline, and I don’t save at all, I press the slipper on the floor, 14-16 liters of gas along the highway, which turns out to be 8 liters, for a car weighing 2 tons and the dynamics of a good sedan I think very well. Yes, I sold x5 and I don’t even look in their direction anymore, the explorer for my money is what you need. Of the minuses, the only thing is that it is not an SUV, it does not have locks for either the front or rear axle, if there is no esp system, then when diagonally hanging, it helplessly rotates two wheels diagonally, even if all-wheel drive is on, so it’s in the mud don't climb.

Actually, I wanted to talk about how I lost this wonderful car.

There was a need for a trip to Moscow, but the ball rattled on the Ford, I didn’t have time to change them in a day. I agreed with my friends, took a fawn 407 from them and began to gather in Moscow, and since I cut the fawn very quickly, I had to give the Ford in the evening so that my friend could finish his business and put it in for repairs in the morning.

11 o'clock at night, I'm going to take a shower and go to bed, because. early tomorrow morning on the road, but the call. - Like, so and so, what are you doing. I say I'm going to bed. Ah, lana, good night, etc.

Strengths:

Weak sides:

  • Fuel consumption
  • Patency leaves much to be desired, but for a city dweller it is enough for the eyes

Review Ford 4.0 XLT 4WD (208 Hp) (Ford Explorer) 2002

The Explorer is a solid jeep from America, comfortable, a little imposing, with its own character…

Motor - 4 liters, the same put on the Ford Mustang ... Powerful, reliable, resourceful ...

The car showed itself well on long journeys ... I was on it in St. Petersburg, Voronezh, Rostov-on-Don, Anapa ... I drove to Petrozavodsk, Helsinki and even Stockholm. Consumption on the highway is sharply reduced by almost 2 times, from 20-25 liters in the city to 11-12 liters.

Strengths:

  • Tranquility, safety, comfort

Weak sides:

  • Still a big expense in the city

Review of Ford Explorer 4.0 (Ford Explorer) 2003

Finally I was going to write a review about the shed, strangely, I owned many cars, but for some reason I wanted to leave a review only about this one ...

A little bit about yourself.

I live in St. Petersburg, 29 years old, married, 2 children. Driving experience 11 years. Before Explorer owned the following vehicles: Toyota Levin (4-AGE), VW Golf, Subaru Forester, Peugeot 307, drove more than a month on: Mazda 626, Mazda BT-50; Sobol Barguzin, Farmer Gazelle, Subaru WRX, Volvo S80.

Strengths:

  • capacity
  • Standard music quality
  • Cheap parts and repairs
  • Engine and transmission combination

Weak sides:

  • small mirrors
  • poor equipment
  • Rigid suspension
  • Cheap interior decoration

Review of Ford Explorer (Ford Explorer) 2004

Good afternoon to everyone who is interested in this device!

Bought, as often happens, by accident, sold Opel and he turned up! Dealership, with one owner, Limited (only without a hatch for some reason), in body kit. Price, because worked in the cabin, was chocolate, I decided to take it, besides, according to the diagnostics, only the steering rods needed to be replaced.

First impressions: unlike many Americans, it turned out to be tough, it picked up speed confidently (my father has a TLC 100, so Ford will be more dynamic with 4.0 liters), I quickly got used to the automatic transmission switch on the steering wheel.

Strengths:

  • Appearance
  • Unpretentious to fuel
  • Cheap spare parts (except automatic transmission)

Weak sides:

Review Ford Explorer (Ford Explorer) 2002 Part 3

Good day, Dear Car Owners!

I want to share with you the sad information about this car. No, I would not say that the car is bad and oh how I don’t want to throw mud at it, I just would like to tell the truth, maybe this information will help someone in operating and choosing a car.

So, having bought a 2002 Ford Explorer. in 2006 for 26 thousand greenbacks, then there was a course (24 rubles for $ 1), adding about 4 thousand more greenery for insurance and various additional stages, I began to get acquainted with my Explorer, of course ... first impressions just fly away, as they say , veal delight)))), there are 2 reviews, if not laziness - read my first mistakes when buying this device, I really hope that my experience and my mistakes will help you avoid this incident.

Strengths:

  • Ford Explorer is a beautiful and serious car, with charisma and comfort, but there is a very big cant - this is an automatic transmission, if it was made with high quality, there would be no price for it!

Weak sides:

  • The automatic transmission spoils all the impressions and discourages the purchase of this car in the future ((((

Review Ford Eddie Bauer (Ford Explorer) 2002

Hi all!

Since I have great respect for this site and for those people who leave their reviews and impressions here, I decided to scratch about my typewriter, maybe it will be useful to someone!

I own this car, nothing at all, three months, but I can already speak objectively about it. I bought this car quite by accident, before that I had never had an SUV, but, as they say, I really wanted to. I have a big family, two children, both go skiing, I play hockey myself, so the amount of internal space plays an important role. Before that, I rode a Mercedes in a 210 body until it started pulling money like a vacuum cleaner, I had to sell it, however, I’m never ashamed, because I did everything before the sale, and honestly told the future owner what I didn’t do. Here you go. The question arose: what to take?? I will not talk about the agony of choice, everyone went through it, right? I decided to take the Nissan Navara, in the maximum configuration. I handed over all the documents for a loan, counted additional equipment, I'm waiting. And then began the Great Ass called the Crisis. Estimating that a payment of 48,000 rubles would not be a good help in the current economic situation, he slowed down this business, i.e. refused. Because the device came out at 1,180,000 rubles, plus all the dopas (150,000 rubles) + insurance (60,000) + winter tires (25,000).

Strengths:

  • Dynamics
  • Appearance
  • Useful volume
  • Low prices for spare parts

Weak sides:

  • brakes
  • Fuel consumption

Review of Ford 4.0L XLT (Ford Explorer) 2004

So, having left about 25,000 km for the Mondeo, it occurred to me to try the SUV. Knowing full well that the SUV will not differ so much from the sedan, with the exception of handling and landing height, it was decided to buy a real SUV (American), with their history, charisma, etc.

The choice of course fell on the brand JEEP. I really like the Commander - a real, male car without any, but a woman driving this will look like a wife who snatched at least something from her unlucky husband after a divorce)) But the problem was the price - I was not ready to lay out 1,500,000 rubles for no one knows why . That is, of course, it is known, but not for me: firstly, I did not know whether I would like to ride such a miracle or not, whether this car would satisfy my needs, etc. and so on. Secondly, at that time I was not ready for such expenses. For the family, he quickly came up with an excuse - they say the daughter was born, it is necessary to carry strollers and all sorts of crap, and besides, it’s safer. Ride with a bang)) Then I considered it as a variant of the Cherokee, and in the previous body, and besides, I wanted 198 hp. But unfortunately we didn’t have them in the city, and in Moscow it’s not pleasant to look for an occupation, and it’s fraught with danger. Next came all the possible car dealerships selling used cars, mostly from America. What can I say - there are certainly worthy copies, but the price tag for them is decent - it practically does not differ from dealer cars, while the rest of the cars are clearly very used. To order to bring, give money to my uncle and wait do not understand what - not for me.

Quite desperate to find something normal for my money, and the limit was about 700,000 rubles, I was already thinking about buying something more serious on credit. I probably would have done so, but the uncertainty with the class of the car was embarrassing. I have not yet determined for myself what exactly, I want to ride for a longer period than a year or two. And then I stopped by a Ford dealer, I have two old comrades working there. And then I find out that one of the top of this enterprise bought a Range for himself, and in view of the fact that he suddenly “ran out of money”, he is selling the Explorer, which he bought in this salon, and, as you understand, serviced in it from and to. The offer to go for a ride was not long in coming and I went for a ride. Without much hesitation, I sell Monya to my friend, and I myself buy Expo. I bought it for 750,000 rubles, which I never regretted, although at that moment the offer was for 600,000 almost the same year of manufacture, but from America - now, if you put them next to each other and look - even the most greedy person would choose the one which is more expensive.

Strengths:

  • Full, difficult to list - you forget, they become commonplace

Weak sides:

  • Well, how can I tell you - these are all trifles compared to the merits

Review of Ford XLT (Ford Explorer) 2004

Good day, Dear visitors!

Over the past 4 years, it turned out that I had to change a fairly large number of cars, Toyota Corolla Ceres, 1.6, 1992, Toyota Crown Premium, 1.8, 1998, Suzuki Escudo 1.6, 1993, Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2, 1998, Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9, 1997, Nissan Maxima 2.0, 2001, Honda Accord 2.4, 2005, in the end, in May of this year, decided to stop and take the car to my liking and for a long period of time, given that I live in the area of new buildings, and getting there by car is very, very difficult - in April I got stuck on the Accord, with its low bumpers, they barely pushed it out, the priority was left for the jeep.

Strengths:

  • Impressive appearance
  • Huge and comfortable lounge
  • Good cross
  • Inexpensive consumables
  • Comfortable 3 row seats
  • Very comfortable tailgate glass

Weak sides:

  • Poor quality, creaky plastic in the cabin
  • Poor soundproofing
  • Swapping the rear wheels when turning
  • Difficult to find discs and attachments

Review Ford Explorer (Ford Explorer) 2003

Good day, dear car owners!

A little about the personal experience of owning other cars, 10 years of experience, was 2107 (93 onwards), Gas 31029 (96 onwards), Ford Focus (2003 onwards), Ford Mondeo (2002 onwards), Chevy Niva (2004 onwards)
After operating the previous Chevy Niva cars, I decided for myself that the next car would be an SUV, as they say, you can’t lure anyone who traveled on SUVs to a passenger car, and I realized this when the choice arose to change cars.

Strengths:

  • Outwardly very beautiful and inspires respect

  • Passability and versatility in everything (curbs and ditches on the sides of the road are not a problem)

  • Prices for consumables are affordable, and the car itself is not so expensive

  • Comfortable vehicle for the whole family

  • Not popular with car thieves

  • Roomy trunk and high seating position
  • Weak sides:

  • Gasoline and insurance

  • Difficult to find parking in the city center

  • The suspension is still harsh, no matter what they say about the American auto industry

  • I can't remember more flaws.
  • - the car, as they say, is an amateur. This is the embodiment of the classic American view of SUVs, not clouded by a vision of economy, environmental friendliness, detail work and a “squeezed” suspension.

    Story

    (1995-2001)

The THIRD GENERATION Ford Explorer has received a new chassis with an independent rear suspension. Among the engines: 205-horsepower 4.0 76 and a new 240-horsepower 4.6 V8 Since 2003, they abandoned the manual gearbox in favor of the machine. A 7-seater saloon has become a novelty.

It was the result of a deep modernization of the predecessor. Engines 4.0 V6 (210 hp) and 5.0 V8 (292 hp) were installed on it. Automatic transmission became 6-speed

And this is the unique charm of this car, its "zest". However, traditional solutions from the USA also have their own characteristics and disadvantages. It is in them that we have to figure it out.

    Engine

Ford Explorer was equipped with a choice of two petrol engines: 4L Cologne V6 (210 hp) and 4.6L Triton V8 (295 hp). There are no turbines and other technological “gadgets” in them, but there is a solid resource of work and an enviable appetite. If the V6 is ready to use 17 liters of gasoline per 100 km in the city and 12 liters on the highway, then the V8 will require about 20 percent more fuel. As a consolation bonus, the power units are able to “eat” the AI-92.

The most common problem for owners of an American SUV was the uneven operation of the engine, the so-called "triple". The cause of this phenomenon may be ignition coils, candles, high-voltage wires. Less often, the firmware of the control unit was the culprit.

The biggest problem was the V8 engine. Not only did the exhaust manifold gaskets burn out quite often, but it is not uncommon for the fastening studs of this exhaust gas outlet to be cut off.

Like many modern cars, the Ford Explorer had catalytic converter problems. Such questions were solved radically. Either by replacing the assembly with a new one, or by removing it and installing flame arresters.

Particular attention should be paid to monitoring the temperature of the coolant, since radiator leaks with runs of 80 thousand km or more are a common phenomenon. In general, the picture of the reliability of the motors is quite rosy. Instances that have traveled 250-350 thousand km without significant problems are not at all rare. Considerable merit in this belongs to the timing chain drive.

    Transmission

For each motor, its own gearbox was offered. So, the V6 was equipped with a 5-speed automatic transmission 5R55W, and the V8 was equipped with a 6-band 6R60. Both "machine guns" were marked by blows when shifting gears, releasing gas, and braking. Oddly enough, the presented units had not only identical problems, but also methods for their elimination, which boiled down to changing the oil and flashing the control unit. And only rare specimens required more serious intervention.

In terms of transmission, the front axle gearbox also “distinguished itself”. Firstly, after severe frosts, oil leaks often appeared through the drive seals, and secondly, due to loosely tightened bolts securing the housing of this gearbox, shocks often appeared when the all-wheel drive was connected.

It is worth noting that problems with oil seals are also characteristic of the rear axle. The three-mode transfer case did not cause any systematic complaints.

    Suspension

The Ford Explorer's suspension is fully independent and American tuned. That is, it is quite comfortable, long-stroke, energy-intensive, and also prone to buildup and excessive rolls in corners.

Its resource, by today's standards, is very good. So, shock absorbers become unusable only after overcoming the 100,000th run, and ball bearings and front wheel bearings “surrender” a little earlier - by 80 thousand km. However, it should be borne in mind that the latter are changed in assembly with the hub.

The silent blocks of the levers “live” indefinitely and only the stabilizer struts cannot withstand even 40 thousand km, and cases of their breakage are not uncommon. A remarkable fact is that in place of the front “links” those from the domestic “Sable” are suitable, and in place of the rear ones - from GAZ 24.

    Brake system

The braking system, like the suspension, does not have outstanding performance, but is ready to last for a long time. As a rule, pads receive critical wear not earlier than the 80,000th milestone, and discs - 100,000ths.

    Steering

Steering may require intervention to 80 thousand kilometers. At the same time, the power steering may begin to make unpleasant sounds a little earlier. But such "symptoms" often appeared only in cold weather and were eliminated by replacing the working fluid.

    Electrician

In terms of electrics, the Ford Explorer proved to be quite predictable - it did not present serious troubles, but it provided a major overhaul with minor breakdowns. Among the most common problems, it is worth noting the “sticking” of the airbag indicator in cold weather, burnt out bulbs in the instrument panel, and often the rear window heating contact that comes off. Separately, it is worth mentioning the rear lights, which are excessively susceptible to deformation from heating by light elements. Such an ailment was "treated" by installing LEDs.

    Ford Explorer 4.0 Eddie Bauver

    Year of issue: 2002

    Engine: 4.0

Good time of the day. About my Explorer, I’ll tell you my opinion in brief about the pros and cons: Pros: Good external “Classic” look, two-tone (blue-beige), looks like itself, and not like some Kia, aka Nissan from the family crossovers, because now they are all very similar to each other  Good light, two-tone leather interior (dark and light beige). Semi-soft plastic dashboard does not bother. Pleasant greenish illumination of the dashboard. Good acoustics with a subwoofer, good clear sound. True, the sub .. is rather weak, but I'm not a fan of the walls staggering. I don’t have a dual-zone climate (driver, passenger), I don’t have it for the second row, but the deflectors are located behind the armrest and the breeze still blows from them under the main climate settings. High landing, the seats do not fail. The second row is quite comfortable, even with the front seats completely shifted, with my height of 182 cm.

Maneuverable, the brakes are good, but not for very emergency situations. Roomy large trunk. Due to the fact that I do not have a 3rd row of seats, two compartments are fitted in their place. In one of them there is a jack and there is still room for various small things (well, in my case, this is a towing cable, a cigarette lighter (crocodiles) 3.5 meters long, a net for securing the load, and various tools (screwdrivers, pliers, etc.)). The second compartment will fit more things, well, for example: you went on a picnic in nature with an overnight stay, laid out the 2nd row, you got a full-fledged double bed, you got pillows from this compartment, a blanket, and what else is there, and wow . In general, it's convenient. And even with the seats folded (between the seat and the second compartment) there is a small lid that closes the space between the seat and the second compartment, which can be opened and put, for example, a 5-liter (square) canister. Good easy to open and close rear two-piece (door or glass) door. The glass can be opened both from the remote control and the button (provided that the interior door lock is open) near the rear door opening handle. Good review back.

Driving characteristics: Frame. Independent spring suspension (easy to repair), good cross-country ability (does not bury itself with its mass), does not sway along the highway, especially at high speed on potholes, although it jumps, it does not stay in its place. Automatic four-wheel drive (sometimes it turns on in the winter on ice, you don’t even feel it, it helped out more than once in ice traps, especially when cornering), 4x4 Hig (when driving on snow, sand, etc.) 4x4 LOW with a number of lowering (at low speeds on a heavier off-road (moderately natural)). Engine V6 4.0. Of course, I would take the V8 4.6, but it was given to me, and there’s nowhere to go for now. Moderately gluttonous, it has enough traction (not a sports car, but we are above that to stupidly rush around the city, showing what kind of person you are .... And quietly calmly.  where to rush?) Automatic 5-speed, short-speed gearbox. Works well 

Well, now about the unpleasant, cons:

Outside: Low ground clearance of 240 mm to the frame, an 80 liter gas tank is located below the frame (it is better to attach protection), short-stroke, stiff suspension (the car literally shakes from bumps, maybe because of the 20th rubber  that I put instead of the 16th) , at the bottom front, under the engine, there is a beam under the engine, which as a result reduces the front clearance (I just wanted to park not quite in the right place on which the cinder block lay, the ground clearance would have allowed if not for this beam, which I was just afraid to hurt). The sore point is the rear plastic beam of the rear window, which quickly breaks with frequent slamming of the glass, as a result of which an ugly crack spoils the whole view, and it is useless to glue it, so it is better not to touch the rear glass door at all. Acceleration to 100 km / h in almost 10 seconds. (V6 4.0). Consumption highway 12 l / 100 km, the city is about 15.5 liters. (I can be wrong). At the expense of the distribution of torque, I could not bring it out, because. I didn’t find a place to check, but they say that you need to turn on the 4x4 LOW mode, well, I don’t know, sorry, I didn’t check.  The automatic transmission works a little incomprehensibly when you drive, for example, behind a car and decide to overtake it, press the pedal to increase acceleration, the machine shifts to a gear lower, while the speed increases, and then switches to the next one. Or when you drive and press the pedal to the floor, there is a delay, then switching to a lower gear, and only then to a higher gear, in short, an incomprehensible job, but such a design feature, they say to save fuel or to relieve a heavy load, in general, is not It's clear.

Inside: The steering wheel is adjustable up and down, I did not include the adjustment of the pedal assembly (in general, they are, but not everyone has them). Rough coasters under 1.5 liters. bottle (by the way, there are small notches on the side of the cup holder for disposable cups with a handle, very convenient). There are large gaps between the door and the dashboard, the ceiling is too low for me (height is 182 cm), this is with a hatch in the ceiling, which hides space, and the back is quite good. There are no handles on the ceiling for holding, only on the sides for holding when landing in the car. On the second row, it is not very comfortable when turning, because. you have to hold on so as not to move out .

Well, everything seems to be, I could not tell something, but the main thing is something like this. This is my opinion and everyone decides in their own way, otherwise I just wrote it, people will read it and be horrified . I don’t want to say that the car is bad, but for example it’s not Kruzak, but it also has its advantages against it. In general, I am almost satisfied with the car, he is my true friend, and I am glad that I have him and that he serves me.

Back in the early 1990s, the Ford Explorer became one of the most popular family cars. All this time, the Explorer has not changed the classic appearance, which is strict, concise and not polluted by fantastic design.

The fourth-generation frame SUV is one of the best in terms of cargo and towing capabilities (up to 3,300 kg), while providing proper comfort and safety. It's not very well suited for off-road use, but it does a pretty good job of towing a small boat or trailer with an ATV.

Independent rear suspension adds stability and control. The Explorer rides better than most competitors, but not as nimble as current crossovers. There are large rolls in corners, and reactions to fast steering turns are belated. In general, responsiveness, accuracy and steering feel are acceptable, and brakes inspire confidence. Explorer IV is noticeably more flexible and stable than previous versions.

The wise Advance Trac stability control system is standard. The trailer sway sway control function is also provided here. While towing a trailer, Advance Trac and Roll Stability (rollover prevention) systems retain control of the machine.

While the finish materials are getting mixed reviews, the build quality is impressive. The cabin is quiet and pleasant even on rough roads. In the asset of the top versions there is cruise control, a DVD entertainment system and climate control for rear passengers. A folding third row of seats is also provided, increasing the number of seats to seven. The gallery is convenient even for adults. Too bad there's no rearview camera, and rear parking sensors were available as an option.

Ford did a great job on safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) put the SUV through a full range of tests and gave it a perfect five-star rating. In contrast, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) considered the side impact protection to be insufficiently flawless, giving the discipline an "Acceptable" rating.

    Engines

There are only two engines in the line of power units: a 4-liter V6 (210 hp) and a 4.6-liter V8 (296 hp). Both are petrol aspirated. Versions with V6 are noisier, because in order to drive such a heavy car, you have to constantly spin the engine. However, none of the motors is impressive with acceleration.

The engines have a chain-type timing drive, which often fails 4-liter units after 200-250 thousand km. Most often, tensioners are destroyed, and plastic fragments are found in the crankcase. The chains are located in the front and in the rear, so the motor has to be removed to replace them. The cost of the original timing kit is about 35,000 rubles, and the total costs reach 100-120 thousand rubles. It is better to install only the original, as it is guaranteed to last more than 200,000 km, unlike analogues that are rented after 50,000 km.

A 4.6-liter engine after 300,000 km sometimes needs to replace worn camshafts. The reason for the lack of lubrication is the result of the wear of the phase shifters and solenoids (chirring appears). With the timely replacement of the last problems with the camshafts does not arise.

Almost all owners of cars with V8 have gone through the replacement of exhaust manifold studs. They stretch and burst after 150-200 thousand km. In this case, in the first minutes after starting a cold engine, a characteristic hooking sound appears or resembles a creak, rattle or knock. The cost of repairing the defect depends on the location of the broken studs. Some of them cannot be removed without removing the engine. This is the most expensive deal worth 30,000 rubles.

The radiator (20,000 rubles) can leak after 150-200 thousand km. By this time, the thermostat is also rented (from 1,500 rubles) in 4-liter engines. A little later, you have to change the fuel pump (from 7,000 rubles). And after 180-220 thousand km, the crankshaft pulley of the V-shaped “sixes” is destroyed (from 15,000 rubles).

Often, electrical wiring also fails - the insulation dries up, or the core rots inside. As a result, errors occur and the performance of various systems is disrupted. Most often, the problem affects the MAF sensor, lambda probes, throttle, gearbox, transfer case and fan clutch. It is worth noting that the clutch often fails due to the destruction of bearings. The cost of a new original fan clutch is from 30,000 rubles.

    Transmission

The 4-liter version of the Ford Explorer was equipped with a 5-speed automatic transmission, and the 4.6-liter units were combined with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The 6-band automatic works more smoothly and responds faster to pressing the gas pedal.

The 5-speed automatic Ford / Mazda 5R55E / S often has to be repaired after 180-200 thousand km. The block of solenoids fails, the reverse tape is destroyed, the modulating valves, torque converter, pump bushings, brake band and packages wear out. Sometimes even cracks are found in the automatic transmission case - on the walls of the grid of hydraulic channels. For the “beu” case, you will have to pay about 25,000 rubles. In other cases, 50-100 thousand rubles will be needed to restore the automatic transmission to working capacity.

The 6-speed automatic Ford 6R is based on the German box ZF 6HP26. The American version is distinguished by a valve body and solenoids of Ford's own design. Until 2008, the 6R60 modification was used, and since 2009, the 6R80. The machine is pretty durable. With regular oil changes and gentle operating conditions, the automatic transmission confidently overcomes the milestone of 250,000 km. Shaking complaints are common and can usually be fixed with a software update. When contacting the service, you have to change the bushings, drum, torque converter, clutches, solenoid or valve body assembly.

Basic modifications for the American market were rear-wheel drive. The official cars of the Russian destination were exclusively all-wheel drive. The front axle is connected automatically when the rear wheels slip. In addition, a permanent all-wheel drive mode is provided and it is possible to use a lowering row.

Front and rear axle seals can leak after 150-200 thousand km. The service will ask for 5-6 thousand rubles for the replacement of oil seals. With frequent off-road trips after 180-200 thousand km, chain stretching in the transfer case and sprockets wear occur. A complete repair costs 50-70 thousand rubles.

After a while, the CV joint of the front propeller shaft fails. It changes only when assembled with a cardan - from 36,000 rubles. Analogues have a very low resource. After 200,000 km, the crosses of the cardan shafts may also need to be replaced (1-4 thousand rubles).

    Chassis

The upper ball joint wears out at a distance of 120-180 thousand km. The bottom support tends to last longer. Silent blocks of levers nurse up to 150-200 thousand km.

Shock absorbers (6-8 thousand rubles) and wheel bearings have a similar resource. The front bearings are changed as an assembly with the hub, and the rear bearings are changed separately. The originals are quite expensive - 25,000 and 9,000 rubles, respectively. However, they will last just as long. The resource of analogues rarely exceeds 20-60 thousand km.

    Body and interior

Body iron is not prone to corrosion. However, on the oldest copies, “bugs” appear at the bottom of the doors and in the area of \u200b\u200bthe rear wheel arches. It is worth noting that the fenders and hood are made of aluminum.

When searching for Explorer, you should pay attention to the number stamped on the frame - located in the area of \u200b\u200bthe right front door. If it is not protected, then most likely the rust has already begun to attack it.

Over time, the glazing of the rear lights melts. Moreover, the disease affects exclusively "European" versions. The optics of "American" cars feel great.

After 150-200 thousand km, the rear wiper drive mechanism turns sour. It is enough to disassemble, clean and lubricate.

After 100-150 thousand km, the backlight of the instrument panel burns out. The service will ask for 2-3 thousand rubles for work. If the backlight of the radio burns out, then the repair will be more difficult - it is necessary to solder the resistors on the board.

    Other problems and malfunctions

In the region of 100-200 thousand km, the heater tee often begins to leak - the plastic case cracks. The original costs 2,000 rubles, but it may soon leak again. An unusual solution is a tee from a plumbing store for 50-100 rubles.

After 6-10 years, the pipes of the rear circuit of the air conditioning system are almost guaranteed to rot. Many simply "jam" the rear circuit (about 6,000 rubles). Replacing rotten tubes with more durable hoses will cost 20,000 rubles.

With age, the actuator and gears of the air conditioning damper drive wear out.

After 150-200 thousand km, the generator may require attention - brushes, slip rings, bearings or a diode bridge wear out. Repair will cost 4-6 thousand rubles.

    Conclusion

Ford Explorer IV is not the cheapest car to maintain. Typical malfunctions are not so terrible, but repairs are sometimes expensive.

Serial production of the legendary Ford Explorer SUV was launched in 1990. The first four generations of the model are a mid-size SUV, since 2011, when the production of the fifth generation of cars began, the Ford Explorer changed its class to a full-size crossover.

In 1990, the Ford Explorer made a splash among American motorists. Focused on aggression and power, the design of the car fully met the needs of Americans and their idea of \u200b\u200bthe ideal car. Among domestic drivers, "American" also gained popularity. The car is highly valued due to its excellent driving characteristics, spacious interior and the presence of innovative systems that contribute to a comfortable stay in the cabin. Having estimated the dimensions, almost every motorist will have a question: “What is the fuel consumption of the Ford Explorer per 100 km?”

    Ford Explorer V (3.5 l)

With the 3.5-liter engine, a new era of Ford Explorer production began. The manufacturer changed the course of development, abandoning bulky power units in favor of more economical and technically advanced motors. Starting with the fifth generation, a 3.5-liter V6 engine has been installed under the hood of the Ford Explorer. The manufacturer assured the following official fuel consumption of this power unit: 13.8 liters in the city and 8.8 liters on the highway.

The reviews of the owners of the Ford Explorer 3.5 indicate the following amount of gasoline consumption by the modification:

    1. Eugene, Kazan. I have been the owner of a Ford Explorer 5 since 2014. I can't get enough of the car. The only breakdown for all the time - after 90 thousand km, only one shock absorber was replaced. For my part, there were no costs, since the car was under warranty. As for the actual fuel consumption of the car, my figures are as follows: 14.5 liters in summer and 15.5 liters in the city in winter, 9 liters on the highway.
    2. Maxim, Omsk. I am the owner of a brand new Ford Explorer 2016 Russian assembly by a car factory in Yelabuga. I always liked SUVs, when I saw the updated design of the Explorer, I immediately decided for myself that I would collect money for this car. There are practically no flaws in the car, except for the lack of windshield blowing. Car consumption rate: 13.5 liters and 9 liters city / highway.
    3. Konstantin, Samara. Ford I have always liked due to the quality of its assembly. The Ford Explorer is a technologically advanced vehicle. I liked the car twice: when I saw the new design and when I got behind the wheel. For now, I'm worried about the cost. During the run-in, a lot of gasoline left - 16 liters in Samara. A few months later, in winter and summer, the same figure is 12.5 liters and 8 liters on the highway. I definitely like this car.
    4. Andrey, Krasnoyarsk. 249 HP enough for those who like to ride with the breeze. The impressions from the Explorer are the most positive. Most recently, the whole family traveled around the country. This is a great car for long trips with a visit to various outbacks. Cross-country ability is excellent, plus acceptable gasoline consumption - 8 liters at an average speed on the highway of 110 km / h

In the line of powertrains, the 3.5-liter engine is one of the most economical and technologically advanced engines. With a power of 249 hp. Ford Explorer 3.5 easily overcomes obstacles in its path, while allowing owners of fast driving to feel all the advantages of the car while driving along the highway.

    Ford Explorer IV (4.0, 4.6 l)

The fourth generation of the SUV supports two different engines: a 4-liter six-cylinder engine with 210 horsepower and a 4.6-liter eight-cylinder engine with 295 horsepower. Gasoline consumption 4.0 modification is: 15.7 / 11.2 liters city and highway, respectively. The much more powerful and top-end 4.6-liter version officially consumes 16.8 liters and 11.8 liters in the city and on the highway, according to the manufacturer.

The actual fuel consumption of a 4.0-liter engine is:

    1. Stas, Kemerovo. Ford Explorer 4 took with mileage 100 thousand 2008 release. If you drive carefully and slowly, then on the highway you can reduce the “appetite” of the car to 11 liters, with cruise control about 9 liters. In the city, of course, too much - up to 20 liters comes in winter.
    2. Daniel, Orenburg. I have an American build Explorer. Took with a range of more than 150 thousand. There are practically no breakages. The car is stable and reliable. Of course, gluttonous. In the city around 18 liters in summer and 19-20 liters in winter. There is also an overrun on the highway - 15 liters. I don't know, maybe I'm driving wrong? But I read the reviews, in almost all this type of motor consumes fuel.
    3. Vyacheslav, Ryazan. Ford Explorer is a powerful car, but extremely “gluttonous”. However, for the fact that you have to refuel a lot and often every owner of an SUV should be ready. But sometimes it seems to me that I stop at a gas station more often than anyone else. 22 liters in the city during frosts and 20 stable in summer. What to do? You have to pay for comfort and power.
    4. Yuri, Lipetsk. I have an all-wheel drive Explorer with an automatic engine 4.0 Consumption is normal - city 16 liters highway 12 liters. It suits me completely. Of the shortcomings, only the quality of service - in the dealership they can’t even deal with the firmware normally.

Few people manage to achieve the official consumption of gasoline in the amount of 15.7 liters in the city and 11.2 liters on the highway. In most cases, this type of engine has an increased consumption of gasoline - in some cases, the consumption rate increases from 15.7 liters to 20 liters. As for trips on the highway, here car owners note more truthful figures certified by the manufacturer.

The real fuel consumption of a 4.6-liter engine according to car owners:

    1. Ilya, Tver. I like this car. No complaints. There is a heated steering wheel and seats, a comfortable lounge. Quality service. I have had the car since 2008. During this time, a certain indicator of the "appetite" of the car was established: 17 liters - winter, 18 liters - summer. Ford Explorer with manual transmission.
    2. Vasily, Belgorod. I have had an Explorer since 2007 - a car for long trips and travel. Everything can be placed in. Among the shortcomings - soundproofing and poor road lighting. You can also write down the amount of fuel consumed per 100 km - 18 liters is stable within the city limits.
    3. Alexander, Arkhangelsk. I've been driving SUVs all my life. Probably the Explorer is my last car. I don't want to change it. Despite the solid consumption of the 95th: 19 liters in Arkhangelsk. I rarely leave the city, I don’t travel, I travel only for work. But once I noticed that at a speed of 120 km / h it takes about 12 liters.
    4. Bogdan, Murmansk. Ford Explorer I dreamed of buying for a long time. About 8 years ago my dream came true. Then the choice was made on the fourth generation with a 4.6 liter engine and an automatic transmission. Auto rating - 5 out of 5. Average consumption of 20 liters with downtime in traffic jams. But personally, this figure suits me.
