Freelander 2 diesel engine oil. Automatic transmission oil plays an important role

Freelander 2 diesel engine oil. Automatic transmission oil plays an important role

Proper selection and timely oil change for the Freelander 2, which is produced with a 2-liter gasoline engine and a 2.2-liter diesel engine, is a guarantee of its proper and durable operation. These motors have high performance and require careful maintenance, especially when operating in.

To change the oil in a Land Rover Freelander engine, it is better to choose Castrol lubricant.

When to change engine oil

The replacement frequency is set by the manufacturer and for Freelander is every 12 thousand km. mileage or every year if you have not driven the specified distance. In some cases, this figure can reach up to 6 - 8 thousand km:

  • if you are using low quality fuel;
  • often move in extreme off-road conditions;
  • short distance travel, frequent traffic jams.

Important! Due to the technical features in a diesel engine, the oil needs to be changed more often than in a gasoline engine. It should also be taken into account that European oils of the Longlife category (prolonged action) are designed for a higher quality diesel engine in Europe, and in Russian conditions the declared unique characteristics practically do not work.

Land Rover Freelander 2 owners, especially those with diesel models, will have to make a difficult choice which oil to use for their engine: original (which is recommended by the manufacturer and filled at the factory) or analogues of various brands. Official manufacturer of A5 5W-30 Edge Professional. It is suitable for both petrol and diesel models. It is a lubricant for high performance motors that guarantees low friction at high temperatures and good wear protection.

If you decide to choose an analogue of another brand of oil in a 2 and 2.2-liter Freelander 2 engine on gasoline or diesel, then you must adhere to the standards specified in the technical documentation. In general, they can be reduced to the following:

  • class A5 / B5 according to ACEA;
  • not lower than SM-SN for gasoline according to API;
  • not lower than CI4-CJ for diesel;
  • synthetics or semi-synthetics, for new models - only synthetic options;
  • viscosity 0W30, 5W30.

Among them it is worth mentioning:

  • Mobil;
  • Castrol;
  • xado;
  • SHELL.

The oil filling volume in the Freelander 2 engine is 6.5 liters. (for modern models of 2.0 and 2.2 liters), for gasoline engines of 3.2 liters, produced before 2012 - 7.7 liters. The data are given taking into account the consumption of the oil filter.

Step by step replacement instructions

You also need to change the oil filter, so you need to purchase it in advance. You will also need a copper sealing washer, a 27 ratchet wrench, a waste oil drain pan and a rag. The replacement is as follows:

  1. Place the car on a lift. Work should be done on a warm engine, because cold grease has a high viscosity.
  2. Unscrew the oil fill cap. This is done to speed up the draining process.
  3. Remove the engine protection. It is advisable to lubricate the threads of the bolts so that they are easier to use in the future.
  4. Open the drain plug.
  5. Wait until the old oil has completely drained into the pre-installed pan. Be careful when performing all procedures so as not to burn yourself.
  6. At the end of the process, replace the sealing washer and tighten the drain plug.
  7. Now you need to remove the oil filter. It is located in front of the engine. With a key of 27, you need to unscrew the cover counterclockwise. The filter is attached to it with clips, so when you remove it, it will come out with it. Using a screwdriver, gently pry out the clips and remove the old filter.
  8. The new filter element comes with a rubber o-ring, which must be put on the cover during installation (preferably lubricated with oil) to prevent future leaks.
  9. Install the new filter by screwing on the cap (do not overtighten).
  10. , initially in a volume of about 5 liters.
  11. After 1 - 2 minutes, check the level with a dipstick.
  12. Add oil so that its level is between the minimum and maximum, but not above the limit mark.
  13. Tighten the oil filler neck and reinstall the engine protection without overtightening the bolts.
  14. Start the engine and let it idle for a while.
  15. Then turn off and check the oil level again. Make sure there are no leaks anywhere.

This is the procedure for self-changing oil in the Freelander 2 engine. Care must be taken to prepare rags in advance. An important point is the replacement of sealing elements, as well as the correct installation of the filter. After replacing, observe the oil level for a while, preferably in the morning on a cold engine.

Often customers ask what kind of oil should be poured? Naturally, all Land Rover owners know that they need to pour Castrol brand oil.

If we talk about the brand, then you must understand one thing, each manufacturer of a particular model has one or another joint event to promote their product, and on mutually beneficial terms they promote one or another brand, for example, oil.

As for Castrol, they do a lot of joint activities with Land Rover in developing their two businesses, and therefore Land Rover recommends using Castrol and certain brands of oil in all its marketing programs.

But the primary source is not what is positioned by Land Rover's marketing, but the primary source is technical documentation and specifications, and that is why, if you look into certain Land Rover technical support documentation, then there is no Castrol brand, there is a certain engine oil specification. And this specification is the original source.

Land Rover directly uses the Ford specification. At each manufacturer's plant, when it manufactures a particular engine, it determines what properties and what requirements engine oil should have and issues its corresponding specification. The specification is “Mercedes”, there is “BMW-ash”, there is “Toyota”, there is also “Ford”. So, all the engines that are produced for Land Rover, in particular, we are talking about the 2.2 TD diesel engine on the Freelander 2, it is produced by the PSA concern (Peugeot-Citroen), and the Ford specification is installed there, but the same engine (2, 2 TD) are also installed on some Mercedes models, but Mersedes does not always position that it is necessary to fill in Castrol oil. Mercedes has its own branded oil or you can fill it with, for example, mobil oil. Therefore, the primary source is the specification of the manufacturer of this engine.

The oil specification looks like a set of characters. Do not confuse the specification with the classification of oils. The classification is somewhat different, there are different classification standards: European, American, there are also some unified groups of oil companies.

So here is the manufacturer's specification for oil, in particular, on Freelander 2 with a 2.2 TD diesel engine without an anti-particulate filter, and models without an anti-particulate filter are supplied to the Russian market, cars only go to Europe with an anti-particulate filter, the following Ford specification is used there 5W/30 - WSS - M2C913B or C.

Now that you know this specification, you can choose any brand of oils. In order to make sure that this oil manufacturer is conscientious, high-quality and responsible, you can see on the label whether this Ford specification is among all the listed specifications, if so, then you can use this oil.

But we, the employees of the LR-WEST service, do not joke with these things. If Land Rover recommends Castrol with a viscosity of 5W/30, then we do not offer customers any other brands, because if some kind of malfunction occurs with the engine, the customer may suspect that this is due to some other oil.

So as for engine oil: You can choose any brand for yourself if this Ford specification is indicated there, because there are manufacturers of engine oils that are much cheaper than Castrol, but they withstand all these specifications.

I would like to draw attention to some more issues regarding motor oils. There are several myths about motor oils.

Myth #1. The oil in the engine and in the gearbox should not darken, but should remain light throughout the entire period of operation.

This is wrong. All modern oils have a range of additives that are designed to suppress foam, resist wear, etc. Also, these additives have one very important function: flushing the engine. And it is precisely because of these properties that the oil in the engine darkens, therefore, over time, the oil absorbs the accumulated dirt, washing it off the engine walls. THIS IS ESPECIALLY RELATED TO DIESEL ENGINES! Very often I had to deal with dissatisfied customers - who returned with a claim that they did not change the oil - then I had to conduct an experiment with clients - he stood next to another car - they changed the oil with him - started the engine, and then looked at the dipstick freshly replaced oil - which it turned out exactly the same in the dark as the old one !!! This is a feature of diesel engines! In particular, on diesel 2.2 TD on Freelander 2

Other myths...

Myth #2. Engine oils practically do not differ from each other, so you can pour the cheapest

Motor oils are very different in their properties. It is very important to choose an oil according to the engine manufacturer's specifications. Be sure to pay attention to parameters such as base, viscosity and additives.

Myth #3. Oil needs to be changed every 5000 km, otherwise it will not work well.

This statement is old fashioned. All current engine oils meet the requirements of modern engines and can be used for the entire service interval.

Myth number 4. Be sure to fill in engine oil only of the brand specified by the car manufacturer

This has been discussed in detail above. You can fill in oil of any brand and any brand, as long as it meets the specifications specified in the technical documentation.

Myth number 5. To improve the properties of the oil, you can add an additive to it.

Do not under any circumstances do this. This is a statement from the 70s, when motor oils were not of very high quality. It may have helped in the past. All modern oils have a very precise formula for certain engines and certain operating conditions. If you add any additives to the oil without permission, you will upset this balance (this formula) and can ruin the engine.

Myth number 6. Modern motor oils do not wear out

Changing the oil in the engine or in the gearbox is regulated by the manufacturer for a reason. Any, even the most modern oil, loses its properties over time and does not provide the necessary protection for rubbing mechanisms. This is due to the high temperatures that we have in the engine, and over time, the oil is gradually contaminated with all possible mechanical impurities.

Myth number 7. Quality oil can be identified by color and smell.

Modern motor oils cannot be tested for quality based on their color and smell.

Ask our experienced craftsmen what oil is best to use for a second Freelander. The answer in this case is obvious, of course, it is Castrol. This is explained by the fact that each manufacturer promotes its product. In this case, oil. But since the Castrol brand is actively cooperating with the SUV manufacturer Land Rover, it has the most up-to-date engineering information about the components and assemblies of Land Rover cars, and therefore, no matter how Castrol knows what oils are needed for these cars. These large companies have many joint projects, joint events and programs. As a rule, recommendations from Land Rover are a marketing ploy, but very, very justified.

Although, if you delve into the documents, you will not find the brand mentioned above there. The papers deal exclusively with the specification of the oil. It is this position that should be taken as the primary source. Ford is the original source of specifications used by Land Rover. You have probably heard of such specifications as "Toyotor", "Mercedes", "Ford" motor oil. The PSA concern ("Peugeot-Citroen") produces a working fluid specifically for Land Rover, in particular, and for the second Freelander.

The specification can be determined by the set of symbols that are shown on the label. Important! This is not about classification, so do not confuse these concepts! The last option is rather standards (for the United States of America, for Europe, etc.). For our country, the European specification C, which is designed for engines that do not have a particulate filter, is not suitable, and it is precisely such cars that enter our market. The main thing when choosing engine oil is to pay attention to the fact that “Ford” oil is marked on the package. Only then can you be sure that the liquid is really of high quality and is recommended for pouring into Freelanders.

We also follow the manufacturer's recommendations, recommending to all our customers an oil whose viscosity is indicated as 5W30. We do not offer any other brands, because we are serious about this issue and we know what the use of low-quality oil can turn out to be. Listen to the recommendations of the LR King service masters so as not to face costly and complex motor repairs. By the way, it doesn’t have to be the Castrol brand, because there are products at a more affordable cost, but it also supports the Ford specification, and this is the main requirement.

Myths about motor oils

The first and most common misconception is that the oil in the engine, as well as in the box, does not darken, a light color throughout the entire period of use is a sign of high quality. We hasten to assure you that this is absolutely not the case. You need to understand that all oils that are sold today contain some additives. They are necessary in order to reduce wear, resistance, eliminate the formation of foam and so on. But the main function of these components is to flush the motor. Just due to this characteristic, the oil begins to darken, because the accumulated dust is easily absorbed by the liquid.

The next one that exists is the myth that there is no difference in oils, in principle. In other words, you can buy cheap and pour it into the engine.

Why - read above.

Many are sure that this working fluid should be filled in and changed after the passage of the next 15-20 thousand km. Old-fashioned and unreasonable, let's say. Despite the fact that modern oils are able to work effectively throughout the entire service interval when operating a car on autobahn-type roads, city traffic jams and ragged driving modes greatly accelerate the aging process of oils, which leads to the fact that oils need to be changed more often than described manufacturer.

An oil change for Freelander 2 (in the engine) belongs to one of the types of mandatory procedures and is carried out within the time limits set by the manufacturer. This is due to the processes of "aging" of the oil in the engine, that is, the loss of some important functions.

What happens if you do not change the oil in the Freelander 2 engine on time:

  • burnout of anti-friction additives (on the rubbing surfaces of the crankshaft and cylinders, micro flashes occur with a temperature of about 1300 degrees, they are the cause of burnout);
  • precipitation of important chemical components (under the influence of time and temperature, some additives lose their electrochemical bonds and cease to be in suspension, which leads to irreparable damage during start-up, especially in the morning, on a cold one);
  • loss of detergent properties (carbon deposits and soot are not removed during the change, but accumulate on the walls and cavities of the motor, especially for diesel engines).

Replacement terms

  • Diesel with high or extreme operating conditions, change of fuels and lubricants or break-in, the content of sulfur elements in the fuel is more than 0.7% - at least 6,000 km or every 90 days;
  • Diesel with normal operation and with a sulfur content in the range of 0.2 - 0.7% - 12,000 km or 180 days;
  • For gasoline engines, the intervals are slightly softer, but still refer to intervals of about 10-12,000 km. mileage or six months of use.

Installed Volumes

Diesel, 2.2L:

  • full (dry) volume, including filter - 6.5 liters;
  • with maintenance - 5.9 liters;
  • min-max dipstick difference - 1.5 liters;

Petrol, 3.2L:

  • full filling (with filter) - 9.3l;
  • TO - 7.7l;
  • min-max - 0.8l;

The procedure for replacing engine oil on a Land Rover is performed with the crankcase protection removed. Then you can easily change the oil filter and drain the "working out". After tightening the filter and installing a new seal under the drain plug, you can fill in a new one, up to the level and start the engine.
