Land rover freelander 2 problems. Land Rover Freelander second generation in the secondary market

22.09.2019

The popularity of crossovers was torn up like an interceptor raised on alarm, and cooperation with the Ford concern bore fruit: the use of the proven EUCD platform (aka C1 plus) and the experience of Ford managers made it possible to solve the old problem of brand car reliability. Indeed, in addition to Freelander 2, many best-selling cars from both Ford brands (for example, Mondeo, Escape, Kuga, Galaxy and S-Max) and Volvo (S80, XC70, XC60 and V70) were built on this platform.

It is also worth noting that the British designers managed to create a surprisingly balanced car, which is quite consistent with the definition of a “compact premium class crossover”, without sacrificing the brand's off-road image. And the price turned out to be not sky-high at all (although, of course, it could not be attributed to budget models either).

All this allowed the company to proudly declare that it has a truly mass model.

Indeed, in just 4 years, the production volume has exceeded a quarter of a million, and by the end of 2014, more than 300 thousand Freelander 2s were already running on the roads of the planet. The crossover has also gained considerable popularity in Russia. But if you dig around the web and see what the owners say about the model, it may seem that you are reading a collection of contradictions. For example, the reliability and quality of this car are among the most frequently mentioned advantages, as well as among the main disadvantages! So why do they love and scold Land Rover Freelander 2?

Hate #5: small trunk

Any crossover is bought as a universal car, and for a universal car it is important to be able to transport a substantial amount of cargo. It would seem that such a solid and massive car (body length - 4.5 meters, width - 2.2 meters, wheelbase - 2,660 mm) and the trunk should be hoo. But the first thing the new owner discovers is that the luggage compartment is actually not that big. Let's be honest: the Freelander 2 has a small trunk.

The cunning British write on the tablets that its volume is 755 liters and, in general, they don’t lie. But this is the whole volume, under the ceiling. And if you measure it the way we are used to, that is, to the glazing line, then exactly 322 cubes of 1 liter fit into the luggage compartment. Plus, the trunk floor is at a height “you will be waist-deep”, so stuffing heavy things (such as a boat motor) into the trunk is still a pleasure.

The next disappointment befell the owner of "Freelik" when he first tries to get into the car for the night. Well, yes, the rear sofa folds, it only folds in this way: first, the rear sofa cushion leans forward, then the backrest “drops” (more precisely, the pillows and backrests, because the seats fold in a ratio of 60:40). It turns out a platform with a flat floor, and that's good. The bad thing is that the pillow thrown forward "eats" at least 30-40 centimeters, and the length of the resulting area is less than one and a half meters. In general, the married couple of Thumb and Thumbelina will settle down to spend the night comfortably, and with a height of 182 cm I can’t fit there even diagonally.

Love #5: Appearance

In at least half of the reviews, external attractiveness is named as a significant plus of the model. Indeed, the appearance of the Freelik can be attributed to the unconditional success of the design team led by Paul Hunstock: from any angle, the car is unambiguously recognizable as a representative of the glorious Land Rover tribe, while, despite the simplicity of the lines, it does not look like a gloomy “suitcase”. It seems to be a typical middle peasant: not small and not large, not high and not low, moderately brutal, moderately aggressive, but not devoid of aristocratic elegance.

At the same time - a typical "unisex". Behind the wheel of Freelander 2, an unshaven adventurer in camouflage, a manager in a business suit, a representative of the creative class in a youth outfit, and a fashionista in a dress from an expensive boutique look equally organic. And some similarities in the general outlines and pattern of the radiator lining with the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are enough for many more modest car drivers, barely seeing the Friel in the rear-view mirrors, in a hurry to give way.

Hate #4: steering wheel and signal

And if they still don’t give way to you, then you need to beep! Okay, maybe that doesn't fit into the rules of good manners too much. But how many situations happen on the road when you need to warn of your presence with a sound signal: either a careless pedestrian crosses the road in an unspecified place, covering his head with a hood and not looking around, or the Gazelle driver tries to play the Selfless watchdog and the Yorktown cruiser - that is, it is rebuilt by the “slow bulk method”. And now you habitually beat on the steering wheel hub - and in response there is silence, because the horn is turned on by two keys in the form of stripes located on the sides of this very hub. The only thing worse could be a “beep” at the end of the stalk ...

The quality of the steering wheel upholstery also causes a lot of criticism, both leather on the top version of the HSE and plastic on simpler trim levels.

But in assessing the steering wheel itself, the opinions of the owners differ diametrically. It seems to some that the steering wheel is too large, and the section is even, without the “ergonomic influxes” so dear to the heart of the racers, but for someone (including me), all this is just to their liking.

Love #4: interior and ergonomics

But the rest of the interior arrangement of Freelander 2, as a rule, causes only positive emotions. The materials are very high quality - leather, fabric, and soft plastic. Perhaps, by today's standards, the instrument panel looks rustic, but the digitization of both the speedometer and the tachometer is perfectly readable both day and night. Everything is convenient, everything is at hand. Particularly good seats with adjustable lumbar support and electric drives.

The engine starts with a button. Now you will not surprise anyone with this, and in 2006 such a decision was typical for much more expensive and representative cars. You need to get used to the fact that to start the engine you need to insert the key fob into a special slot to the left of the steering wheel, but this solution also has a quite clear plus: when the engine is running, the key fob battery is charged, and you should not be afraid that in some moment you will not be able to open the car due to the fact that your battery is dead. Well, in case you left the car in the parking lot with the headlights on, landed the main battery, and the locks locked in the “closed” position, the sting of the mechanical key is hidden in the body of the key fob. This will allow you to open the doors, pull the hood lock lever and “light up” some compassionate Samaritan from the battery.

Very good and review. First of all, because of the branded “commander” (more precisely, “semi-commander”, after all, this is not a Defender) landing. Many consider the interior mirror too small, but this drawback is completely compensated by large mirrors, like a real SUV, and ultrasonic sensors and a rear-view camera (which, however, are only in top trim levels) help when maneuvering in the parking lot. And absolutely everyone likes the exceptionally high-quality sound of the Meridian speaker system.

Hate #3: Poor soundproofing

But here is an ambush: the Freelander is still noisy. And it's not the rumbling of a 2.2-liter diesel that annoys at all - although it does not work silently, it does not rumble like a tractor either. No wonder the vast majority of sales came from diesel versions. Moreover, in Russia they accounted for more than 95% of all Freelanders sold! But aerodynamic noise and road noise from the wheel arches, both rear and front, are quite annoying. You can, of course, take care of additional sound insulation, but this means serious investments, and most likely it will not solve the problem radically. So most owners simply prefer to turn up the sound of that wonderful Meridian media system on a bad road.

Love # 3: good handling and flotation

As befits a good crossover, in terms of the perception of the road surface, the Frilik is absolutely omnivorous. Its suspension readily deals with gentle waves, small bumps, and serious bumps and pits, without requiring steering. In fact, the handling of the car deserves to be discussed in more detail.

On the one hand, there are crossovers that steer much better, especially on good pavement - for example, the same BMW or Audi. But you also get much more tired in them, especially on long routes in the Russian outback, where good asphalt is more of a rarity than a rule. On the other hand, the fact that there are cars with more polished and sharper handling does not mean at all that everything is very sad in the case of the Freelander. Yes, the car rolls in corners more than comparable sedans and hatchbacks, but these rolls are not beyond the permissible limits.

The situation with accelerating and braking dynamics also looks very good. The six-speed automatic provides exceptionally correct traction control, so the desire to switch to manual gear shifting is very rare. Freelander accelerates very confidently, and you can get away from the traffic light even when there are much more powerful cars nearby. Then, of course, they will catch up with you, but it will be later ... In general, the accelerating Frilik resembles not so much a cannonball fired from a cannon as an electric train that has started off the platform. It seems like nothing happened, and you were not pressed into the back of the chair, but there are already a hundred on the speedometer.

In this, by the way, there is a certain ambush. In terms of subjective perception of speed, Freelander has two positions: “I stand still” and “food”. Both 20 and 120 km / h are perceived almost the same, and the difference between 75 and 85 km / h (which determines whether you will receive a “letter of happiness” or not) is not felt at all. In short, for a long time the Freelander's only rival in terms of ride comfort in the compact premium crossover segment was the Mercedes GLK.

2 / 2

Hate #2: Expensive service

Just like cars with a three-pointed star, Freelander is quite expensive to maintain, especially if you use the services of authorized dealers. Superimposed on all this is the fact that for cars manufactured before and after 2012, there are different maintenance regulations, and, of course, in each case, separate for gasoline and diesel versions.

So, for pre-styling cars, it is supposed to change the oil in the transfer case, manual gearbox and rear axle gearbox with a mileage of 240,000 km, but since 2012 these operations are supposed to be carried out with a mileage of 130,000 km (except for servicing a manual gearbox, the oil in which you need change every 10 years regardless of mileage). Conversely, the replacement of spark plugs until 2012 was carried out at a mileage of 48,000 km, and after 2012 - at a mileage of 78,000 km.

And in any case, all this is not cheap. For example, for cars manufactured in the period 2010-2011, the cost of maintenance with an oil change in an automatic transmission with a mileage of 48,000 km can reach 50,000 rubles. It is clear that the vast majority of Freelander owners are people, although they are not in poverty, but they also do not belong to the “masters of life”.

A natural process was the migration to the so-called "club" services, specializing in the maintenance and repair of Land Rover, but not included in the official dealer network. There they will clearly tell you that the engine oil needs to be changed at least every 12,000 km or once a year, and the oil in the machine - at least 1 time in 65,000 km. But the oil in a manual gearbox, in a transfer case and in axle gearboxes (with the exception of the rear one) can really be changed less often than once every 130,000 or 240,000 km, as prescribed in the official regulations. The fuel filter needs to be changed at every MOT, the air filter - every other time, without checking its condition.

Love #2: even to Siberia!

If you treat the car with attention and love, then it will reciprocate. In particular, this applies to operation in the winter, the most difficult period for all motorists.

Surprisingly, but the car, designed on the British Isles washed by the warm Gulf Stream, and even equipped with a diesel engine, can be safely called one of the most “winter-hardy” models on our market. Firstly, all Freelanders were equipped with standard Webasto preheaters with remote start. They have their own sores: until 2013, rather fragile Webasto Thermo Top V were installed on the car, but after that new (and almost eternal) boilers with a Webasto Thermo Top VEVO evaporative type burner went on. One way or another, with a working heater and relatively fresh preheated candles, the diesel Freelander 2 starts confidently even when the thermometer drops below 30.

But even after starting the engine, the Freelander owner will continue to enjoy life: he does not have to, cursing everything in the world, furiously rub the windshield that has been frosted to complete opacity. Just press the Prog button located on the center console and the car will go into quick warm-up mode. The electric heating of the windshield and rear windows, washer nozzles and side mirrors will turn on, the engine will increase speed, and the air conditioning system will work at maximum power. Naturally, for the comfort of the lower back (and what is below), you can turn on the heated seats. A couple of minutes - and the "wipers" will brush off the melted ice from the windshield, melted windows will appear on the side windows, and the temperature in the cabin will rise to acceptable values. You can start off ... And this despite the fact that warming up many diesel SUVs, even premium ones, requires at least 10-15 minutes.

Hate #1: And yet it breaks...

Still, the main stumbling block in assessing the Freelander 2 is its reliability. Literally everyone agrees that this model is the most hassle-free in the Land Rover range. Maybe the fact is that the car, although equipped with a sufficiently large number of automatic systems, is still not completely “electronic”.

But here's what's interesting: as I already noted, at least half of the owners consider the reliability of Freelander 2 to be one of its main advantages, but the second half consider reliability to be the biggest problem. Indeed, the car has several generic sores, the fight against which almost no one can avoid.

At the turn of a run of 60-80 thousand km (sometimes earlier, sometimes a little later), you will begin to annoy the rumble that the rear axle emits. As a rule, the cause of it is the front bearing of the rear gearbox. At the “officials”, you will most likely be offered to change the gearbox assembly, and this is 32 thousand for the gearbox itself, plus work and fluids ... In general, it runs pretty well. Fortunately, in specialized unofficial services, they acquired the necessary tools and adapted to sort out the gearbox, while changing only the bearing itself and “disposable” parts. Such an operation costs 10-12 thousand.

Another generic sore is the death of the intercooler pipes, which are rubbed against neighboring metal parts, or even simply burst.

As a result, the engine instantly loses traction and begins to smoke, and either "POWER LIMIT" or CHECK ENGINE lights up on the display. This disease can be cured on its own, and a set of nozzles can cost very differently: from 14-15 thousand for the original set to 1,500 rubles for Chinese counterparts from Aliexpress. There are even originals that install pipes from KAMAZ, and surprisingly, everything works!

But otherwise, the problems and the price of their solution are not too different from other models. In general, all these real-life shortcomings cannot cast a shadow on the main advantage of the model.

Love # 1: like a real "rogue"!

The main advantage (for those who understand) is the best-in-class cross-country ability at the level of “real SUVs” with a transfer case and a reduction gear. In any case, in terms of cross-country ability, Freelander 2 (of course, on the appropriate tires) is quite comparable with the standard Niva or Chevrolet Niva (and this despite the fact that you should not even stutter about their comparison in terms of comfort).

Here it is worth mentioning the serious ground clearance (220 mm - this is not a bug for you), and the excellent security of all units under the bottom of the car, and durable bumpers, and a diesel engine that provides serious traction at low revs.

Freelander 2’s main weapon against off-road is, of course, the proprietary Terrain Response system with the Snow, Mud/Ruts and Sand modes, which until 2012 were turned on by a characteristic “washer”, and after that - by buttons arranged in a row , as well as a hill descent assist system. I will not go into the intricacies of controlling the system and how it works, I will only note that it (in the case of a correctly selected mode) ensures that the ESP will not “strangle” the engine when you need to move with slippage, will not allow the wheels to turn when it is really harmful, and will help to cope with diagonal hanging.

Naturally, "Freelik" has its own limit. For example, he really does not like deep ruts, and if you lay the car on the inter-rut bump so that it hangs all four paws, then you have nothing left to do but run after the tractor. In general, off-road it is recommended to include not only Terrain Response, but also the head.

“Urban cross-country ability” can not even be discussed: neither curbs, nor yards covered with uncleaned snow and parking areas are an obstacle for this car.

Summing up, we can say that the new owner of the Freelander 2 should prepare for certain financial costs (especially since since 2015 the only source for buying this model can only be the secondary market). Based on this, "Freelik" should not be bought with the last money, otherwise the owner may suffer severe disappointment. But in any case, there are still more reasons to love this car than reasons to hate, and financial investments in it pay off with amazing confidence that you experience in any road conditions and driving comfort.

Do you rather love or hate Freelander 2?

Last year, the popular car brand Land Rover stopped production of the Land Rover Freelander 2 model. Instead, now - Discovery Sport. And for those who want to buy a car of the last release, only used models remained. Let's look at the main options for this instance and find out how to choose a used car.

A bit of history

The second generation version hit the market in 2006 and was in great demand until 2010. But then the manufacturer decided to make a small restyling. This model can be identified only by optics and disks, as well as body colors.

Those motorists who have closely followed the development of this lineup know that the update in 2010 was cosmetic, but a new upgraded 2.2-liter turbodiesel unit was also installed. The 2013 model also underwent modernization, but in appearance there are practically no differences with previous years. Everything is inside and under the hood.

But here everything is not as simple as it seems. The company has been following an unpleasant chain of events since the late 90s. Land Rover's power was sold to BMW, which took a few developments for the X5, then a third-generation Range Rover of disgusting quality, and then the transfer of the company to Ford. At Ford, they began to engage in the introduction of new developments and innovations, but then the crisis of 2008 followed, and the project was curtailed. At the beginning of the 2000s, the brand could be compared to a talented child who loved music, but at the behest of his parents, he was engaged in boxing. But despite all the obstacles, the engineers from Land Rover were able to do something.

Salon

Behind the wheel of the Land Rover Freelander 2 SUV, there is some kind of solidity. The controls are large, chunky, and the landing is traditionally high. The door slams shut as if a giant is banging his club on wood. At the same time, a high structural strength is felt. As for soundproofing, it is not at the premium level. Although it is difficult to compare with what KIa does.

The quality and finishing materials may seem cheap, and the plastic is very hard to the touch. But this is not so - everything is very pleasant. In general, the interior is quite strict and solid. Everything is done very classically. The eye in this interior rests on the instrument panel with a large color display. Here you can see temperature readings and other characteristics. In addition to the readings of the trip computer, the Terrain Response menu is easily displayed on the screen. So, you can see the mode of operation of the system and the angle at which the front wheels are deployed.

See how this system works in the Freelander-2 SUV. The test speaks for itself.

Also, the potential owner will find in the cabin a new steering wheel, handbrake, as well as an updated center console. represented by a seven-inch touch screen. I am pleased with the presence of voice control, and for music lovers, the sound of Meridian is presented. These are 11 speakers with a total output of 380W or 17 speakers with a total output of 825W. Impressive? Great, but not available in the database.

Some consider the ergonomics of the interior to be unremarkable. But the car is simply amazing in this regard and fully justifies all the money invested in it. Besides, this is the last of the real Land Rover.

under the hood

We are talking about the used Freelander-2 SUV, which means that we need to approach the issue from this point of view. So, the car does not shine with perfection. The diesel unit, namely with it it is recommended to purchase this crossover, was previously used on the Ford Transit. And when the person who sells the car will say that the engine has been tested by time, then you need to understand that the unit is very outdated. Produced these motors of the year. But there's nothing wrong with that, of course. The only thing is fuel consumption, like Airbus, and complex electronic components and the presence of a turbine will not allow you to drain diesel fuel from familiar truckers.

In our country, they offer the Freelander-2 diesel SUV. This is the already well-known 2.2-liter engine with a capacity of 160 hp. With. However, there is still a 150-horsepower unit with a manual or automatic transmission and a 190-horsepower engine. For a domestic user, it is equipped only with an automatic machine. Both units produce the same torque. Both modifications have turbochargers with the possibility of changing the geometry.

In models from 2013, engineers replaced the unit with a 2.2-liter diesel engine with a capacity of 240 hp. With. Now it is economical, powerful, with good traction characteristics.

Transmission

Warner is built to be fast and responsive. But also the box is quite economical. For example, the operation of the torque converter lock-up has a wider range. The developers have reduced the weight of the gearbox and optimized it inside. The mechanical box for this model has not changed after the modernization and remains the same as it was.

The underrated car

Yes. It's exactly like that. In the Top Gear show, the model was undeservedly rejected because of her low-key appearance. But at the same time he is talented in other ways. The second generation is built on a rigid frame platform. Women's subframes are installed front and rear. The suspension is long-stroke, simple and maintainable. There are no problems with her.

Off-road, the driver will be helped by a unique electronic traffic control system, as well as permanent all-wheel drive. For the Freelander-2 SUV, the price is quite democratic and even affordable, if we talk about used cars.

Yes, the owners talk a lot about electronics flaws. She is often wrong. It has already been said about the outdated engine, the sounds of the working suspension will be heard very clearly. However, when it comes to appearance, one can safely argue. Fans believe that it is ideal: simple, brutal and concise. With all those shortcomings, the car turned out to be a real fighter. A repair ("Freelander" 2nd generation), with proper operation, will be reduced to the replacement of consumables.

Specifications

Engine - 2.2 liters, with a capacity of 150 or 190 liters. With. Fuel consumption is 7.0 liters per 100 km. Transmission six-speed, automatic. The car can overcome fords up to 500 mm.

How to choose?

Let's talk about choosing the right car. So, the model was produced from the 06th to the 14th year. That is why there are a lot of selection options in the secondary market. For the Freelander-2 SUV, the price is from 600 thousand for copies of the first years of production to 2.5 million rubles for the maximum configuration. But, of course, the cost is slightly overpriced. You should choose a crossover aged 3-4 years and a 2.2-liter simple turbodiesel unit.

The manufacturer offers a three-year warranty on the machine. By purchasing a three-year-old car, the buyer will definitely receive a service history in his hands. This, though small, is still confidence in the future. For engines, a turbodiesel with a capacity of 150 hp is especially popular. With. It is better in terms of software, and the turbine is cooled by both oil and antifreeze. There is also a tax difference.

What configurations does the 2nd generation Freelander have?

Three sets can be distinguished. These are S, SE, HSE. Engines to choose from, too, in fact, three. These are already familiar diesel engines, as well as a 2-liter gasoline engine with a capacity of 240 “horses”. Complete sets differ from each other in interior materials, electronic functions and equipment, as well as exterior features.

maintainability

Much has been written about the used Freelander 2 SUV; reviews, shortcomings - all this is very clear. Among the shortcomings - only the engine from Ford. But it is this diesel with automatic transmission that is recommended to be purchased. It is more economical and is perfect for modern realities.

There will be no problems with the car. is not here and never was. Instead, a catalyst is present, so there are practically no problems. Both the engine and the transmission have a high resource.

Owners often write on the forums about the Freelander-2 model with mileage. Reviews do not actually note shortcomings.

Many manage to drive up to 300 thousand km without repair. To do this, you just need to regularly change the oil, fuel filter and other consumables.

They often write about problems with a “burnt” transmission. They just follow from the fact that the oil changed irregularly. After 130 thousand, the manufacturer recommends performing as well as rollers. These parts are relatively inexpensive. It is also recommended to regularly change the lubricant in the transfer case. It changes along with the timing.

Suspension SUV "Freelander-2" with mileage: reviews, disadvantages

The owners declare the high reliability of the systems. Very rarely, someone writes that up to 150 thousand shock absorbers were replaced. Often change racks and bushings. But if necessary, the front shock absorbers still need to be replaced.

As for the brakes, only the pads change here. Everything else has a high resource. Prices are quite low and uplifting for those who buy such machines.

conclusions

In general, you can safely buy a used Freelander-2 SUV. Reviews, shortcomings show that the machine has been operated without problems for a long time. The owner is only required to comply with the rules. This is a great car for those who know a lot about them.

So, we found out what the 2nd generation Freelander SUV has reviews, advantages and disadvantages.

In 2012, the British company Land Rover presented its fans of the brand with its once again upgraded 2nd generation Freelander crossover (the previous attempt to “rejuvenate” the model produced since 2006 took place in 2010).

The first update of the "second Freelander" affected not only the appearance of the crossover, but also some changes in technology took place (which the owners could see in the engine compartment - in the form of an upgraded 2.2-liter diesel engine).

Two years later, Freelander 2 underwent more significant intervention from designers and engineers (both the exterior and the technical stuffing were again upgraded) - this time the crossover also received a new interior + a lot of interesting and useful options (not previously offered on pre-styling models).

The front and rear lighting equipment of the updated car received fashionable and necessary (provide improved visibility of the car in the stream by other road users) LED elements. In the headlights, sections with diodes harmoniously complement the xenon light - they look stylish and expensive. In the rear dimensions of the LCD lamps are no less spectacular and imposing. The radiator lining has retained its shape, but is complemented by a strict chrome frame. The bumper has become more massive, received a pronounced aerodynamic lip along the lower edge, fog lights "dressed up" in chrome rings. From the front, the updated version of the 2nd generation Freelander began to look more solid and gained more similarity with the older models of the British company Land Rover.

In profile, the restyled Freelander 2 has not changed - the difference from the previous version is only in a slightly different shape of the front fenders with a more pronounced stamping of the wheel arch profile and an expanded selection of alloy wheel patterns. In the basic configuration, there will now be tires on R17 rims, and more “adult” diameters R18-R19 are offered as an option.

The back of the updated SUV remained untouched, with the exception of the dimensions of the ceiling lamps, which received LED lamps. Otherwise, everything is unchanged: a large tailgate of the correct shape, a compact bumper cut from the bottom for better geometric cross-country ability of the car outside the paved road.

The dimensions of the car after restyling in 2012 are: length - 4500 mm, width - 2005 mm (with mirrors 2195 mm), height - 1775 mm (with roof rails 1830 mm), ground clearance - 210 mm. To all the changes in the exterior, the British manufacturer has added expanded options for choosing body colors - due to three new colors: Aintree Green, Havana and Mauritius Blue.

Inside the 2012-2014 Freelander, there are much more changes than outside. A new instrument panel has appeared with two strict dials and a multifunctional 5-inch color monitor located between them. Torpedo and center console have changed in the style of "adult Land Rover". The console is crowned by a 7-inch touch screen installed for effective control of the new advanced audio system, navigator and image output from the rear view camera. In the base, however, there will be modest CD MP3 USB AUX music (8 speakers 80 W with a 5-inch color monitor), but in expensive versions one of two options for the new Meridian music system with a subwoofer. The first produces 380 W through 11 speakers, the second - 825 W broadcasts from 17 broadcast points.
Below is the “smart” climate control control unit, which is able to provide the temperature programmed by the owner before the driver enters the cabin, whether it is cooling or heating the internal volume. The car has got an electric “handbrake” with a force adjustment system depending on the angle of the parking surface, keyless entry, a voice command recognition function, and a stylish analog clock. The Terrain Response system is now controlled by buttons rather than a rotary knob. There are three possible color solutions for interior trim: ebony, ivory, stewed vegetables (rich light brown).

In the second row, thanks to the seats installed 50 mm higher (relative to the front seats), passengers sit comfortably and comfortably. And from the back row, the review is perhaps even better than from the front seats.
Rear seats with a margin in all directions for three passengers. The trunk in the stowed state has a volume of 755 liters, folding the back row we get 1670 liters of usable cargo space.

If we talk about technical characteristics - for the updated Land Rover Freelander 2 2012-2014 model year, two four-cylinder diesel engines are offered, familiar to Russian buyers from the pre-styling "SUV", and a new gasoline "four", which replaced the in-line "six" i6 3.2 (233 l .With.).
New petrol engine 2.0 turbo EcoBoost (240 hp) with "automatic" in 6 steps, this unit is also installed on the Range Rover Evoque.
Diesel engines:

  • TD4 2.2 (150 hp) with 6 manual gearboxes and start-stop system, fuel consumption in the combined cycle is 6.2 liters of diesel fuel;
  • TD4 2.2 (150 hp) with 6 automatic transmissions (optionally with manual transmission mode Command Shift), consumes about 7 liters in the combined cycle,
  • SD4 2.2 (190 hp) with 6 automatic transmissions with Command Shift function is content with 7 liters and allows you to accelerate to 100 km / h in 9.5 seconds.

The suspension has not changed, however, as well as the all-wheel drive system with the function of adapting the engine, suspension and Terrain Response gearbox to road conditions. By pressing a button on the center console, the driver can select the optimal mode for driving on almost any surface: asphalt, grass-gravel-snow, mud, ruts-sand - the car itself will provide proper traction and select the suspension algorithm. Of the electronic assistants available: ABS with EBD, ETC - traction control, CBC - cornering braking control, EBA - emergency braking assistant, DSC - dynamic stability control, RSC - rollover protection, Hill Descent Control - traffic control during descent and ascent , braking energy recovery system.

Graphical characteristics of the diesel engine FREELANDER 2

Torque Nm; Frequency of rotation of a cranked shaft rpm; Power, kWt

The cylinder block of the FREELANDER 2 diesel engine is cast iron, double-walled, a special shape designed to reduce noise and increase rigidity. There are no liners in the diesel engine FRIELENDER 2, the cylinders are made directly in the block. Cylinder numbering from 1 to 4 starts at the transmission side.

The cylinder head on the FREELANDER 2 diesel engine is cast from aluminum alloy and the valve cover is machined together as a precision pair. According to the technology, the design of the cylinder head is new, it provides a swirl of the air entering the cylinders without the need for additional valves.

Repair of the cylinder head on the diesel engine FREELENDER 2 is not provided by the manufacturer. The balance shaft assembly itself on the FREELENDER 2 diesel engine is made with high precision and cannot be disassembled. The mating surfaces of the cylinder block can be machined. The cylinder head and valve cover on the FREELANDER 2 diesel engine are precision machined and should always be replaced together if necessary.

The cylinder head itself has a peculiarity, the intake valve seats are irregularly shaped, which causes the air flow to swirl.

Freelander 2 diesel engine head, valve cover and camshafts

The cylinder head and camshaft cover have mating surfaces. These parts are ground and precisely positioned using two centering sleeves. These two components are always installed together and are not replaced individually. The cylinder head and camshaft cover are tightly connected to each other. An oil seal located at the front of the cylinder head provides a sealed connection to the exhaust camshaft housing.

Freelander 2 diesel engine crankshaft

The camshafts on the FRILENEDER 2 diesel engine are cast iron. For fastening, 5 plain bearings are used, located in the cylinder head and valve cover. The exhaust camshaft is driven by a timing belt from a pulley on the crankshaft. The intake camshaft is driven from the exhaust camshaft by a chain drive. The vacuum pump is driven by the intake camshaft. The high pressure fuel pump on the FREELANDER 2 is driven by the exhaust camshaft. Gap compensators and hydraulic type rocker arms, respectively, the clearance in the valves is not adjustable.

Hydraulic clearance and rocker compensators (roller rockers) of the Freelander 2 diesel engine

16 valves are controlled by roller rockers (rockers) and hydraulic gap compensators, which are driven by camshaft cams. One end of the roller rocker rests on the end of the valve stem, the other is attached to the hydraulic clearance compensator. In the middle of the roller rocker there is a roller that is constantly in contact with the camshaft cam.

Freelander 2 diesel engine pistons and connecting rods

The pistons on the FREELENDER 2 diesel engine are toroidal and made of aluminum alloy. They have 3 piston rings (upper and lower compression, oil scraper). The pistons have double grooves for oil cooling, which is supplied by spray nozzles, as well as a double-tapered piston pin and piston pin bushings. The piston pin itself is held by two rings.

Let us briefly explain their function (what they are for).

Consider the moment when the pistons of the 1st and 4th cylinders are at top dead center (TDC), while the pistons of the 3rd and 2nd cylinders are at the bottom dead center (BDC), in this case, the forces arising from lowering pistons 1 and 4 differ from the forces required to lift pistons 3 and 2, the difference in these forces causes uneven rotation of the engine. In the FREELANDER 2 TD 4 diesel engine, these forces are compensated by the creation of counter forces. For this, counterweights on the balance shafts are used. To compensate for the changing forces, the counterweights must be at BDC while the pistons are moving towards TDC. Since this situation occurs twice for each revolution of the crankshaft, the speed of the balance shafts on the diesel engine FREELANDER 2 is twice the speed of the crankshaft.

One balance shaft is driven directly from the crankshaft of the engine, and rotates in the opposite direction with respect to the direction of rotation of the crankshaft. The second balance shaft is driven from the first balance shaft and rotates in the same direction as the crankshaft.

The clearance between the crankshaft gear and the balancer shaft gears is adjusted using a special tool. To adjust the gap, it is necessary to use gaskets that are installed between the cylinder block and the body of the balancer shaft assembly.

Freelander 2 diesel engine sump - stamped, steel. The oil pump on the diesel engine FRIELENDER 2 is rotary type, driven by a single-row chain from an asterisk on the crankshaft. Maximum oil pressure 6.5 bar at 4500 rpm. The FREELANDER 2 diesel engine has 4 oil spray jets to cool the pistons. The relief valve opens at a pressure of 8 bar. The oil system on the diesel engine FREELANDER 2 provides for a combined filter and oil cooler unit with an oil pressure sensor, as well as a combined oil level and temperature sensor (cars with an installed diesel fuel combustion filter DPF).

The manufacturer provides for the use of 5W / 30 Oil - fully synthetic that meets the Ford 913-B specification.

The volume of oil to be poured into the diesel engine FREELENDER 2:

  • Dry engine (including filter) - 6.46 liters;
  • Oil and filter change - 5.86 liters.

The oil change service interval is 12,000 km according to the regulations until 2013, and 13,000 km according to the regulations from 2013. In case of high sulfur content in diesel fuel, the manufacturer recommends changing the oil in Land Rover diesel engines every 6000 km.

Freelander 2 diesel engine cooling system

It consists of a water pump driven by a camshaft drive belt, a main cooling radiator, the thickness of the radiator is 7 mm, made of aluminum, an expansion tank that is cast under high pressure. The cooling fan unit is equipped with only one modification of the cooling system fans, regardless of the climate in which the vehicle is operated. The fan is controlled by a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal. For cold climate markets, the Land Rover FREELANDER 2 is equipped with an optional fuel-burning heater and an additional coolant pump.

The volume of the liquid of the cooling system on the diesel engine FREELANDER 2 is 7.6 liters, the volume of the liquid of the cooling system with an additional heater is 8.0 l, the antifreeze content is 50%, the specification of the Texaco XLX coolant. The radiator has a plug for draining the coolant.

Freelander 2 diesel engine intake system

The air intake and purification system on the FREELANDER 2 diesel engine includes: a paper filter element, a Garratt turbocharger with an electronically controlled drive for changing the geometry of the turbine blades, an air cooler for cooling the charged air (intercooler), 4 resonator tubes in the intake tract, an integrated throttle assembly and intake manifold, an improved design of the cylinder head for maximum swirling of the flow of incoming air, dampers that cover the air supply to the cylinder head.

3rd Generation Bosch Common Rail Fuel System. It has a mechanical pump for supplying fuel from the fuel tank, the maximum pressure created in the system is 1800 bar. Piezoelectric injectors have 7 holes and are capable of performing 5 separate fuel injections during one working cycle. The nozzles have a built-in check valve in the drain circuit.

Fuel is supplied from the fuel tank by a mechanical pump located at the rear of the high pressure fuel pump housing. The fuel itself passes through a cassette-type filter and enters the inlet to the high pressure fuel pump.

The fuel filter assembly has the following features: a shell to increase the strength of the filter in case of traffic accidents, a paper element located inside a sealed plastic container (maintenance free); heating of fuel using a thermostatic valve to prevent thickening of the fuel, there is a pipeline for draining water; a fuel temperature sensor (in the circuit to the engine) is inserted in the upper part of the fuel filter housing to transmit data to the electronic engine control unit, which are used to calculate the required pressure in the fuel rail.

The replacement of the fuel filter on the FREELENDER 2 is regulated every 24,000 km.

The thermostatic valve is built into the fuel filter assembly and helps raise the fuel temperature and prevents the fuel from thickening.

If the temperature of the fuel supplied from the FREELANDER 2 tank is below 10°C, all the fuel drained from the high pressure circuit is supplied to the area around the fuel filter. fuel filter. The amount of fuel that will be drained into the tank past the fuel filter will depend on the temperature of the fuel and the position of the thermostatic valve.

The high pressure fuel pump is driven by the exhaust camshaft. The maximum fuel pressure in the rail is 1800 Bar. The fuel pressure at idle is 300 Bar. The non-return valve maintains the pressure in the injector drain line at 10 bar. Piezoelectric nozzles, 7 holes, are installed in the center of the combustion chamber.

High pressure fuel pump diesel engine 2.2L TD4 Freelander 2

The high pressure fuel pump of the 2.2L TD4 Freelander 2 diesel engine is attached to the rear right side of the cylinder head and is driven by the exhaust camshaft. At the end of the pump housing there is a flange connection, and the pump drive shaft is installed in the cylindrical casing. The pump drive shaft housing extends into the cylinder head housing and is sealed with an O-ring.

Each injector has a 10 digit alphanumeric code. The numeric code allows the ECM to optimize fuel injector control based on the calibrations of each individual injector. Calibrations reflect the actual amount of fuel that is injected into the cylinder at a certain fuel pressure in relation to the nominal amount of fuel at the same pressure. If injectors are removed from the engine, it is important to remember their position and install each injector in the same place from which it was removed. In case of replacement of injectors, it is necessary to enter a 10-digit alphanumeric code into the memory of the electronic engine control unit using the IDS diagnostic system.

Solid particles (soot):

If insufficient air is supplied to the cylinder, the content of particulate matter (soot), carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) increases, as in this case, incomplete combustion of the fuel occurs.

Nitrogen oxides NOx:

If the mixture becomes leaner (for the same amount of diesel fuel), then the content of nitrogen oxides NOx increases. The exhaust gas supply to the cylinder is used to maintain balance. The oxygen sensor affects the formation of particulate matter in the exhaust gases and therefore the ability to comply with the limits on the content of pollutants in the exhaust gases at a range of 100,000 km. The oxygen sensor measures the ratio of oxygen and fuel according to the composition of the exhaust gases, which allows you to recalculate the actual amount of fuel that must be supplied to the cylinder. Therefore, if deviations occur in the operation of the injectors and / or the mass air flow sensor, these deviations can be compensated for by the oxygen sensor. According to the readings of the oxygen sensor, the information contained in the data arrays in the memory of the electronic control unit is corrected, which makes it possible to calculate the required amount of fuel and fresh air supplied to the cylinder. Also, according to the readings of the oxygen sensor, the optimal operation of the exhaust gas recirculation system is determined.

The saddle type fuel tank is made of six-layer laminated plastic and contains the following components:

  • Fuel delivery module with an integrated transfer module that uses a Venturi tube;
  • 2 magnetic fuel level sensors transmit information about the fuel level to the central switching unit CJB. The CJB calculates the amount of fuel in the fuel tank and sends the calculated value to the instrument panel.

Strategy to prevent running out of fuel from the fuel tank on the FREELANDER 2

  1. The FREELANDER 2 low fuel warning is generated when there are 10.3 liters of fuel left in the tank.
  2. Fuel capacity in tank = 4.5 liters (Torque limit, cruise control is canceled / not activated. DTCs are not stored, the driver of the FREELANDER 2 may only notice the lack of torque under heavy acceleration).
  3. Freelander 2 fuel tank capacity = 3.5 liters (symptoms as stage 1 + skipped flashes) No DTCs set.
  4. Fuel tank volume = 2.5 liters (symptoms as in stage 1 + 2 + Engine stop. DTC P 115B 68 “Low Fuel Level Forced Engine Shutdown” is logged – low fuel level caused the engine to stop.
  5. To be able to use the FREELANDER 2 again, more than 5.5 liters of fuel must be filled. To be sure that the fuel gauge readings are updated, you should add fuel with the ignition off, as with normal refueling.
  6. If you try to start the engine without refueling, the engine will start and stop after 500ms.

Land Rover Freelander this is the entrance ticket to the world of royal cars. This car is the younger brother of the world famous premium SUV. This relationship has a positive effect not only on popularity, but also on quality and off-road performance. What's more, buying a used Land Rover Freelander comes with far fewer potential problems than buying the flagships of the royal car line. But let's talk about everything in order.

A bit of history:

The Land Rover company did not immediately decide to release a small parquet SUV, despite the fact that crossovers were gaining more and more popularity in the 90s. Fans of the English car industry tend to justify such a decision by Land Rover's unwillingness to spoil its image by selling a not quite full-fledged SUV. In fact, financial problems are to blame: the company " MG Rover", which owned the brand" LAND ROVER”, simply did not have the financial capacity to develop and launch a fundamentally new car for itself. Therefore, the first Freelander appeared only in 1997, when he had more than enough competitors.

The first version of the Freelander was a five-door, but in 1999 a three-door crossover was also introduced. The second generation Land Rover Freelander was presented in July 2006 at the London Motor Show. The Freelander 2 is manufactured at the Halwood plant. In addition to the exterior and interior, the range of power units has also been updated. In 2010, Freelander 2 has undergone a slight restyling, and the most important update is under the hood. In the new model year, the car began to be equipped with new engines, this was done in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere, as well as to reduce fuel consumption.

Advantages and disadvantages of Land Rover Freelander 2 with mileage

Land Rover Freelander 2 can be equipped with both gasoline and diesel power units - gasoline 3.2 (233 hp); diesel 2.2 (150-160 and 190 hp). The diesel engine has received the widest distribution, and as operating experience has shown, it won popular recognition for a reason. In addition to the fact that the motor is very reliable, it also has the smallest consumption among crossovers. The average consumption of this engine is only 7 liters per hundred. In addition, we are used to the fact that the diesel engine is usually noisy, the Freelander is a rare exception in this component, since the turbo engine is very quiet here, and it is almost inaudible in the cabin. Of the standard diesel shortcomings, there is only one, and that is exclusively winter. The car may not start well in cold weather, if before that you refueled with low-quality diesel fuel. Due to design features, the exhaust camshaft was destroyed on cars of the first years of production, fortunately, this drawback is not found on all cars.

When choosing a car manufactured in 2006-2008, check with the owner if he changed the camshaft under warranty, if this procedure was not carried out, there is a big risk of getting into expensive repairs. Repair to replace the camshaft costs 1500-2000 USD. Also, do not forget to pay attention to the condition of the timing belt. If the previous owner refueled with low-quality fuel, there is a high probability that you will have to change fuel injectors, the original ones will cost 1000 USD. piece, not the original - from 200 c.u. In our harsh operating conditions, the engine must be serviced at least once every 10,000 km. Changing the oil filter is quite difficult, plus you need a special key to remove it, so many masters in garage service stations do not change the filter ( be extremely careful). Also, the motor does not like air starvation, be sure to monitor the condition of the air filter and the air flow sensor (installed on the air filter housing).

Cars with gasoline engines in the secondary market are very rare, as even new ones are sold very little. The main reason for low sales lies in the high fuel consumption, in the city, on average, 15-17 liters per hundred come out. In terms of reliability, there are no complaints about the gasoline engine. This power unit was developed by the company and has been installed on a number of cars for a long time. Do not forget that the fuel pump, like most cars, is cooled naturally (immersed in the gas tank), so do not let the tank be low on fuel in the warm season (try to have at least half a tank of gasoline in the heat).

Transmission

Paired with a diesel engine can be a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic transmission, with a gasoline engine - only automatic transmission. Operating experience has shown that the mechanical transmission is very reliable, as a result, calls to the service to eliminate any malfunctions are rare. But there are complaints about the reliability of the automatic transmission, so, in particular, gear changes occur with jerks and jerks. According to statistics, every second box requires serious investment after 150,000 km. In order to somehow calm the indignation of the owners, a service company was launched in 2008, under the terms of which, on cars serviced at a company service station, the box was changed with a run of more than 100,000 km even without signs of malfunction. The promotion ended in July 2010.

The all-wheel drive system is implemented using a clutch " Haldex". This system is very reliable, the only thing that gives trouble is the electronic clutch control unit. This happens due to its unfortunate location (on the bottom of the car), as a result, all the dirt and reagents get on it. This block is quite expensive - 600-700 USD, and its resource is only 60-80 thousand km.

Salon

Interior decoration, compared with older brothers, is modest, but the materials are of fairly good quality and retain their original appearance for a long time. On cars with a mileage of 100,000 km or more, the interior looks almost like new. The only thing that can give out mileage is the cracked sidewalls of the front seats, this happens after 150-200 thousand km. Like most modern crossovers, Land Rover Freelander has a large number of electronic systems: driver and passenger seat adjustment, all-wheel drive mode selection system, electronic parking brake, etc. But unlike competitors, Freelander has no problems with electronics. Power windows are equipped with a learning system, and if you remove the terminal from the battery, the settings will be lost. To reconfigure the system, you need to: while holding the button, lower the glass and hold the button for 5-10 seconds, then make 3-4 long presses on the "down" button. Next, holding the button up, raise the glass, after the glass rises, hold the button for 5-10 seconds, then make 3-4 long presses on the "up" button.

Driving performance Land Rover Freelander 2 with mileage

Running Land Rover Freelander 2 has a decent level of comfort and paired with electronic systems is the pride of Land Rover. MacPherson type suspension with powerful longitudinal and transverse forged levers is installed front and rear. The levers are mounted on a powerful subframe to increase the rigidity of the structure and get rid of unwanted vibrations. The front suspension uses a reinforced anti-roll bar, which improves handling on the track. If you first see the car from below, it may seem that this is not a crossover, but a full-fledged SUV, everything is so thoroughly done. Thanks to the reinforced chassis design, the Land Rover Freelander has no weak points in the suspension.

Even if you storm off-road, the elements of the suspension pass for a very long time: the bushings and stabilizer struts go at least 50,000 km, the lower rear levers have to be changed every 60-80 thousand km, shock absorbers and thrust bearings serve 100,000 km or more (from 80 USD ., PC.). Closer to 150,000 km, it will be necessary to change CV joints, ball bearings, silent blocks and wheel bearings. The steering rack is not a problematic place, but if it still starts to tap, it will have to be replaced as an assembly with internal steering tips, the replacement cost is 800-1000 USD. After 150,000 km, the gearbox bearings begin to buzz, repairs will cost 200-350 USD.

Outcome:

Land Rover Freelander 2 - high-quality, comfortable and fairly reliable car. And, if you need a compact crossover with good cross-country ability without unnecessary show-off, then this car will not disappoint you.

Advantages:

  • Patency.
  • Pre-heater installed from the factory Webasto».
  • Comfortable fit.
  • Low fuel consumption of diesel engines.
  • Wear resistance of interior materials.

Flaws:

  • A small resource automatic transmission.
  • The buttons for locking the doors and the sound signal are inconveniently located.
  • High maintenance cost.
  • Difficult to sell.
