The name of this model at the time of its premiere back in 2000 should have told the public everything about it. Optimal dimensions, optimal performance, optimal price…
Making allowances for the then reigning fashion in the auto world, she looked, in truth, a gray mouse, easily lost against the background of competitors, and their list always inspired respect. After all, at all times it was difficult to find on the market a more or less sane manufacturer who was not noted in this super popular class.
Maybe it happened because it was just a modernized Sonata, which was destined to go further along a completely different and more efficient evolutionary path.
Or maybe because the car, which the Europeans knew under the name Magentis, and the Koreans - as Lotze, with each release of its next generation proved that, unfortunately, it could not keep up with the rapid development of the market?
A slight revival, of course, awaited her in 2010, when the great Peter Schreyer began to collaborate with the brand's design bureau. It was with his light hand that the car finally began to look decent, and in some ways even ahead of its time.
Now its fourth generation is already relevant, and in 2019 we are waiting for not only its logical update, but also the appearance of a modified spectacular sports station wagon SW in the list of proposals.
It is not known what prompted the Koreans to try their hand at a market long occupied by Europeans, but given that they are ready to set a price that is much more affordable for the general public, it is possible that their venture will be crowned with success.
Restyling of the exterior and structure
Recently, with the introduction of each new restyled body, it seems that figured grotesquely enlarged and endowed with sharp futuristic features, air intakes with integrated multi-component foglights have become the norm in auto design.
Kia, despite all her love for softness and smoothness, here also could not resist the temptation, and showed the world not only them, but also an interesting X-shaped organization of the front end, in general. Where the traditional “smile” of the false radiator grille, as if, looks into its reflection in the form of an aerodynamic element located below in an integrated bumper of similar shape.
By the way, the complete visual absence of the latter has recently become a hallmark of the brand, not to mention the huge, narrow and coquettishly broken lines of the front LED optics.
Behind the changes will be noticeable not so. Unless the lanterns change their shape a little and the bumper becomes “thicker”, but the “sides”, on the contrary, will be leaner, supporting the glass of the door windows that seem very narrow.
In terms of design, the front-wheel drive platform will remain the same, as will the overall dimensions of the 2016 edition.
Updating the interior and equipment
In the reformed model, the front panel will look a little different, as well as the steering wheel design will change and stylish LED lighting will appear.
Otherwise, it will be a well-known endemic of the Korean K5 market, except perhaps with a slightly updated multimedia system, which now has voice control, an eight-inch display and a more premium audio system.
As an option, leather trim is offered in a pleasant dark brown shade of very decent quality, which, to tell the truth, is not typical for Kia at all.
As for new equipment, the 2019 model will receive adaptive cruise control, a new stability control system, a heated steering wheel, a push-button engine start, a lot of electronic adjustments for comfortable seats with a memory function, as well as their ventilation.
In addition, of course, it could not have done without a wireless-type gadget charging station and improved electronic engine settings.

With regard to the updated Optima, in addition to a significant expansion of available options, we should expect the following:
- to choose from - 141-horsepower turbodiesels and gasoline units with 180 hp. (at 1.7 and 2 liters, respectively) as new products, but it will be possible to prefer options with traditional two-liter versions for 168 and 245 hp. (the latter is distinguished by a direct injection system);
- eighteen-inch disks (it can be considered simpler - an inch or two less);
- length - 4.855 m, width - 1.835 m, height - 1.465 m, wheelbase - 2.805 m;
- front drive;
- tank for 70 l;
- trunk for 510 liters.
The list of complete sets of the new Optima will be traditionally rich. The most basic - Classic, will be the only one aggregated with gear shifting mechanics, while the top one, as before, is considered Prestige with lower airbags, in addition to the basic ones, a start-stop system on a button and a luxurious interior decor.
Approximately the same level with it - GT-line equipment with blind spot monitoring, a panoramic sunroof and an all-round visibility system, as well as very high-torque, powerful engines and more aggressive body design elements.
Initially, the GT-line equipment was planned as a sports one, but, in the process, the Koreans changed their minds about developing this direction in relation to their mid-size station wagon sedan.
In addition to them, Comfort will be available, in which you can already choose an automatic transmission, but with the same set of engines, Luxe - already with a wide range of engines, and Luxe FCC - where everything is the same as in previous versions, but with seventeen-inch wheels wheels.
Also, in the spirit of the times, hybrid variations of power plants will be introduced separately, the parameters of which are planned to be made public later.

Security systems
The upgraded Optima sedan will receive a number of devices designed to improve operational safety. On the versions offered today, up to seven airbags are installed (including a knee airbag, which is available only in the Prestige version). Up to nine pillows are supposed to be used on the new model (two will be added, located in the backs of the rear row of seats). The equipment of the basic version will include only 6 pillows, the rest will be offered as an option or as part of expensive options.
Depending on the equipment, new models will have:
- assistance system when starting uphill and downhill;
- tire pressure level sensors (via radio channel);

A number of new products will appear on the upgraded sedan, which are designed to increase the safety of the car:
- Headlights with xenon lamps are equipped with a cornering light function and an automatic switching system for low and high beams.
- Additional body elements made of high-strength steels have been introduced, which have increased the torsional rigidity of the structure.
- The number of body units made by hot stamping has been increased. This further increased the strength of the body during frontal and side impacts.
Cost and available equipment in 2019
Data on trim levels and installation options for power units are unofficial.
The start of sales of Optima in the North American market will begin no earlier than the fall of 2018 with a preliminary announced price of 22.5 thousand dollars. The appearance of the updated Kia Optima in Russia is expected at the end of the current year or at the beginning of 2019. The cost of the basic Classic package in the current version is 1.21 million rubles. Given the possible expansion of basic equipment, the price will change upwards.
The Comfort package will get additional warm options, fog lights, leather-trimmed controls, separate climate control and paddles located under the steering wheel for shifting gears. The price of the KIA Optima sedan of 2019 production year in the Comfort configuration will be at least 1.35-1.4 million rubles.
