The year is 2017, and it would seem that a wide variety of stereotypes have long been broken, but the stereotype that German and Japanese quality is above all, and the rest cannot compete with it, is still not completely “broken”. However, the Korean company Hyundai is doing everything possible to correct this situation - for example, in 2014 it introduced the second generation Genesis sedan, which is designed to convey to motorists that the “Korean premium” exists, and not just exists, but is actively advancing. on the heels of the famous German brands Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi, as well as the Japanese Lexus and Infiniti. Is the premium class for Hyundai “tough” and what is interesting about the updated four-door? Read our review!

Design

We remind you that today Genesis is not only the name of a prestigious sedan that has survived a generational change, but also a separate sub-brand of Hyundai, under whose auspices 6 new high-end models will be released by 2020. The fact that the intentions of the Koreans to conquer the premium segment is more than serious is screamed by the whole look of the Genesis four-door, including the “bmw” front part of the body with a massive chrome grille, the predatory look of the front optics, almost like the pre-reform Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and brand emblem with wings, similar to the Aston Martin logo. As for the "stern", it has a certain similarity with the Lexus.

The energetic silhouette of the car is emphasized by the expressive side lines of the body. In general, if you look at the second Genesis from the side, it immediately becomes clear that we are talking about a very large, wide and generally solid car. You definitely won’t have to worry about the overall impression made by such a car - a sedan from South Korea inspires no less respect with its appearance than any of its competitors. The large trunk lid in this case is opened by pressing the electric button, or contactless if you stand next to it for a few seconds with the key. The luggage compartment is quite roomy - it includes at least 493 liters. luggage, but it has one drawback - there are no hooks for fixing the load.

Design

The platform of the second generation machine is borrowed from the previous model, but has undergone significant refinement. The 74mm longer wheelbase design accommodates the previously unused HTRAC all-wheel drive transmission (option). The rear multi-link suspension has also been redesigned, while the front double wishbone suspension has remained intact. In addition, Hyundai engineers removed the air struts, installing electronically controlled shock absorbers on the Genesis (only for the Sport modification). In addition, all damping elements have been recalibrated, the angular stiffness of the suspensions has been increased, and the wheel alignment has been changed to improve traction. Light-alloy materials were practically not used for the manufacture of the platform, however, the share of high-strength steels increased from 13.8% to 51.5%. Thanks to the new space frame, torsional stiffness has increased by 16% and bending stiffness by 40%.

Adaptation to Russian conditions

Despite the presence of all-wheel drive, the updated Genesis is not suitable for Russian off-road, which, however, is not at all surprising: after all, this is an executive car intended mainly for city trips, and even with a modest ground clearance - it is only 130- 135 mm. But he has excellent sound insulation - due to the fact that the cavities of the doors, hood, roof and wheel arches are now filled with new soundproofing material. And to resist the Russian cold, the car has heated seats and a steering wheel.

Comfort

Unlike its predecessor, the second Genesis feels high quality. In its spacious interior, it smells like in the latest BMW 5 Series, in many places there are woodgrain inserts and soft plastic, including on the dashboard, as well as pseudo-metal panels. Seats, doors on the inside and steering wheel trimmed in leather. Neither the assembly nor the overall architecture raises questions here - everything is done as it should be and with taste. The seats on the 1st row are comfortable, with soft headrests, pillows adjustable in length, heating and ventilation. Landing is lower compared to cheap "brothers" Hyundai, which is reminiscent of BMW. The seats of the 2nd row are also very comfortable - an armrest with electric adjustment buttons and switches for their ventilation is “registered” between them. The entertainment system for the rear passengers, with all the claims to the premium class, alas, is not available, but there are curtains on the side windows and an electric curtain on the rear window, not to mention the luxurious panoramic roof (in the top version).

The most important complaint about the cabin is too big, thin and smooth steering wheel. The steering wheel is equipped with a servo and buttons for controlling the audio system and cruise control. But you can’t find fault with the dashboard: it has an absolutely modern design, a large information display and pleasant backlighting. The layout of the center console - like the Audi. At the top of the console is a touchscreen multimedia complex, on the sides of which are elegant ventilation deflectors. Beneath the touch screen, you can see an analog clock that adds sophistication and sophistication to the interior, as well as a climate control and multimedia system control unit with matte black buttons - about the same as the BMW.

Already in the "base" of the driver and passengers, as many as 9 airbags, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera and a stabilization system are expected. In more expensive trim levels, auto-braking systems, road marking monitoring, blind spot monitoring, active cruise control, all-round video review and even a projection screen are provided, thanks to which various useful information is displayed on the windshield. In addition, the list of equipment includes a parallel and perpendicular car park.

As standard, an audio center with 7 speakers and a subwoofer is installed on the sedan, and for an extra charge an “advanced” Lexicon speaker system with 14 or 17 speakers is offered, and the sound quality is excellent in both cases. Complementing this is a navigation system with Bluetooth and a high-resolution 9.2-inch touchscreen capable of simultaneously showing navigation and multimedia data. Graphics and speed "multimedia" is fully consistent with the image of a prestigious car.

Hyundai Genesis Specifications

The technical stuffing of the updated Genesis is represented by the branded atmospheric Lambda GDI D-CVVT direct-injection sixes, which meet the Euro-5 environmental standard and are combined with both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The three-liter engine produces 249 hp. at 6000 rpm and 304 Nm at 5000 rpm, and the 3.8-liter engine develops 315 hp. and 397 Nm at the same rpm. Paired with each of them is an eight-speed automatic transmission of Hyundai's own design. The average fuel consumption "according to the passport" is 11-11.6 liters. per 100 kilometers, depending on the modification. Summing up, we can say that the premium segment of Hyundai is still "tough", as evidenced by excellent technical characteristics, and bright appearance, and rich equipment, but the "teeth" for more confident competition have yet to grow and grow ... How Whatever the case, it's a worthy claim.

They say the first impression of a person is the best. I don’t know about a person, but about a car, for sure. The strongest and most concrete. These are the first kilometers behind the wheel. Then you get used to it. Bugs start to look like features, features look like techno scrambled eggs, and deepest in your head is that “wow” or “oops” that escaped you at the dawn of communication with the machine.

With Genesis, this happened to me at the start. I got behind the wheel, fired up a whispering V6, stroked the wood and plastic, weighed anchor, and got it. I realized that for the first time in my life I can’t say the usual phrase: “Korea has taken another step forward and will soon catch up with the big boys.”

Because she, Korea, is already among them. In terms of the quality of finishes, the number of bells and whistles and the level of technology - in the international premier league. Genesis and in the first generation flew high above the standards of the brand. He aspired to be on a par with the best. And here he is. Wow! Really similar.

Looks even stronger than I would like. Because it leaves a distinct Bavarian aftertaste. The evolution of the corporate identity - Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 - is a great thing: the “fluid sculpture” has remained dynamic, but has become stricter and more elegant. In Santa Fe, this approach worked - one of the most beautiful cars in the class came out! But in the premium segment, designers did not dare to take the radical steps promised by the HCD-14 concept. “Genesis II” looks like a BMW in an Audi mask on the outside, and inside it sometimes quotes the Munich demiurges. The desire to dress in the fashion of the club is forgivable for a young aristocrat. But it is still a pity that this time conservatism has won.

1. Material

Shock! The “Koreans” have never had such a high quality finish

2. Sound

For music with a name, 17 Lexicon speakers sound rustic

3. Steering wheel

Large but comfortable. And a bunch of buttons and levers. offset

4. Entourage

The center console has a specifically “beam” bow. Ja, ja, natural!

5. Boxing

A real proper machine. As many as 8 steps

6. Time

The watch is cute, but for some reason “know name”. Where are the wings? Where is Genesis?

7. Veneer

In the best traditions of modern fashion: natural, matte, rough

8. Saddle

In expensive trim levels - with ventilation and heating

The consolation prize is original parts, such as taillights. And the infotainment interface washed away even iDrive with MMI: these juicy graphics and intuitive intelligibility are worth a lot. As well as ergonomics in general. It's time for Asian premium brands to be jealous! The package of electronic systems and assistants to the driver is complete. And the color HUD-projection on the windshield will not cause envy only in BMW. Despite the fact that the majority today “above the hood” do not even have primitive b/w numbers. And again about the quality of the finish: materials, assembly, silence - quite “German”. I had to remind myself that I'm sitting in Korean car.

Munich profile, Ingolstadt full face. But who's to say that Bavaria is bad?

Plus a hard body. Plus the longest base in the class. Plus quiet and smooth petrol V6 3.0 (249 hp) and 3.8 liters (315 hp). Plus quick 8-speed automatics. And the new HTRAC all-wheel drive system. For the younger motor, with which the Genesis is rear-wheel drive in the base, HTRAC is an option, for 3.8 it is standard. Technically, this light and compact transmission is an analogue of Magna's BMW xDrive. That is, the engineers were also equal to Bavaria. And set up Genesis on the Northern Loop...

1. Drawing lesson

The touch interface of the 9.2” display impresses with its meticulous rendering. Class!

3. In trend

Electronics will monitor “blind zones” and keep you in the lane. Handbrake - button

Yes, Korea had to rediscover many of the stages already passed by the rivals. Now it's time for Hyundai to get into the details. Details in which both God and the devil. Armchairs - yes, “the most comfortable on Hyundai”, but the rear cushions are still a little short. Record 3010 mm wheelbase? But then there could be more space in the back. I'm sure the advanced suspensions keep the car cool in the loops. But comfort on bumps is not always guaranteed. The steering wheel is fast and heavy in a sporty way - although we do not go to the Ring every day. Let's relax... But no, the Genesis is deliberately striking - in defiance of the imposing Lexus sedans.

Or maybe it should be? He is young and vigorous. It is aimed at the same aristocrats in the first generation - not yet tired of luxury and entertainment. And it seems that he already has everything that is needed for their automotive happiness. For my taste, it remains only to polish the settings, return a radically own face and not miss the price.

Fame and success are complicated things. Many people can't stand them. Having achieved success and inspired by it, they relax, begin to make mistakes and eventually slide down the slope. As a result, what started well either ends badly or becomes mediocre. The same is happening in the automotive world. The more successful the new model is, the more likely it is that the second, third or subsequent generations will no longer be so flawless. It's not an axiom, but it happens. It's good to have exceptions to the rules. This is the new Hyundai Genesis, second generation, 2015.

Hyundai Motor released its first premium sedan in 2008 and almost immediately it earned a lot of interest from many car enthusiasts. At the same time, the classic and avant-garde appearance, the use of expensive and noble materials, the positioning of the car as a business class car and respect for its consumer bribed the automotive community and endeared it to itself.

And just recently, at the Detroit Auto Show, the heir to the pioneer was presented. Becoming even more elegant, technically improved and refined. It can be seen from it that the Koreans have caught the courage and will not stop there.

Hyundai calls its design of the new Genesis, Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 (loosely translated it means "fluid sculpture"), which is a natural continuation of the previously used Fluidic Sculpture 1.0. first appeared on the Sonata and proved that sometimes the best body line is the one that is not visible.

Everything superfluous was removed from the body of the new generation Genesisa. Now it has become smooth and elegant, nothing distracts the eye from the contemplation of the main content of the design idea.

The 2015 Hyundai Genesis is a distinctive and unusual premium car, interesting in that it is one of the few representatives of the automaker with a focus on budget models making successful strides in meeting the needs of more affluent buyers.

It's wide. Front LED headlights emphasize its dimensions, long horizontal lines of headlights make it squat and dimensional outside. This move gives more impressiveness and aggressiveness to the car.

Compared to the first generation, it has become even longer, by only 5 mm, but the wheelbase has undergone major changes, increasing by 73 mm, to 3009 mm .. This technical move has increased interior space and improved driving comfort. The suspension is also not spared, becoming better and more comfortable. Behind a new multi-link suspension, front improved suspension with aluminum shock absorbers. Driving, manufacturers promise, will be on top.

Hyundai uses 50% more high strength steel than any of its competitors. This has improved the rigidity of the structure by as much as 40%, which gives the car a sporty character.

He has character, but do not forget that this car was created for pleasure and comfortable movement from point A to point B. And powerful and restive engines, the volumes of which start from 3.0 liters V6, 3.3 l., 3.8, will help you move faster. l. and ending with the most powerful 5.0 V8 with 420 hp.

Transmission - only automatic and only 8 steps. As the lucky ones who have ridden on the Hyundai top say, this symbiosis of the engine and gearbox is an excellent combination for such a car.

Moreover, there is no lack of power even when there are 311 hp under the hood, with a 3.8 liter engine.

There are two types of drive, a classic rear and a daring full one, in order to feel all the delights and fullness of the mighty engine under the hood. Four-wheel drive is not simple, but patented, called the HTRAC system, Hyundai Traction, it independently controls the traction between the axles and has a sports mode.

Electronic assistants have become the norm even on inexpensive cars, but here there are many of them. It would be superfluous to list them, it is easier to give a link to these articles: and, because everything that is on Mercedes, BMW or Audi is also on Genesis, only the names are different.

The interior is spacious, rich, stuffed with a huge amount of electronic "goodies" to make even a long road seem like honey. Nothing should distract a modern successful person from his affairs and worries, and the machine itself will take care of the rest.

In this car, even the engine is a feast for the eyes, a sculpture and nothing more. We are used to seeing a similar approach to detail in the creation of a car among the Germans, Americans, French, but now it is clear that the Koreans are also not born with a bast, they will still outdo competitors in the belt and there is no doubt about it.

Silence, however, is not the only attractive aspect of the 2017 Hyundai Genesis G80 cabin. Like the exterior, the interior design carries over largely unchanged from the old Hyundai Genesis.

Contrasting with other modern luxury car interiors, the design of the G80 is simple and free from excessive extravagance. A 9.2-inch touchscreen display sits comfortably on the dashboard without any odd bulges or shapes. The woodwork really does look real and even the plastic parts seem to be of good quality.

Each form in the Genesis salon is quite functional. A rotary controller on the center console can be used as an alternative to touching the screen, and plenty of redundant analog buttons make navigating the infotainment system much easier than systems that rely more heavily on touch controls alone.

The infotainment system responds quickly to touch screen sounds, turns of the rotary controller, or button presses. Its graphics are not the most dazzling in the world, but they are very easy to read. The Hyundai Genesis G80 is available with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so you can always use these systems to access phone features.

The G80 has a relatively high driver's seat position, which is a little odd but helps with outward visibility by offsetting the car's relatively high skyline. Overall, the interior is worthy of a luxury car, even with the optional panoramic sunroof installed on the test drive car, which reduces it a bit. There's quite a bit of legroom in the back, and the seats themselves are comfortable with decent back support.

They say the first impression of a person is the best. I don’t know about a person, but about a car, for sure. The strongest and most concrete. These are the first kilometers behind the wheel.
