The Civic is supplied to our market only with a 1.8-liter gasoline engine (141 hp), which migrated from the previous generation car. The timing chain drive is designed for the life of the engine and requires no maintenance. Although the forced replacement of the chain will not cause problems: a special tool is not needed to mark the shafts - a person without much experience can handle this operation.

The attachment drive is obscenely simple. The tensioner roller has a very convenient loosening mechanism, and the belt itself can be changed even from above without removing additional elements. Its replacement is not provided for by the regulations, but usually the minimum resource is 100,000 km.

Individual spark plug coils are freely available. They are fixed with bolts "by 10", and the iridium candles themselves are made under the head "by 16". The replacement interval is 120,000 km.

To replace the engine air filter, just lift the engine cover. In a hatchback, the upper partition of the engine compartment is located higher than in a sedan, respectively, and the cover can be raised higher, and this facilitates the procedure. The replacement schedule is every 30,000 km.

But in general, the difference in the layout of the engine compartment of a sedan and a hatchback comes down to trifles.

Replacing the battery is not a problem even in winter. It is pressed only with a bar fixed on two long studs with “10” nuts - and no brittle plastic. A battery charge sensor is placed on the negative terminal, but it does not need to be touched - it is enough to loosen only the terminal itself. In rare cases, when the battery is disconnected for a long time, you will have to enter the radio code, and there is no clear dependence on the duration.

Big complaints were caused by the expansion tank of the engine cooling system. It is located very low - under the battery, next to the left fan. The tank is labeled with minimum and maximum levels. They can be seen well, but the liquid level is difficult to see without a flashlight. In addition, the engineers brought the filler neck of the tank too low. If there is no spout on the antifreeze container, some of the liquid will certainly spill past. And the radiator filler cap is located well (you won’t lose a drop), and you can even reach its drain plug from above. The antifreeze replacement interval is 200,000 km or 10 years, then 100,000 km or 5 years.

In a manual transmission, the drain plug is located under the left drive and is made to fit a ⅜ inch square, a 17-inch turnkey filler plug is placed above it. Everything is as usual: pour oil until it flows from the filler and at the same time from the control hole. I was surprised only by a small oil change interval - 60,000 km. However, for the box it's good.

The manufacturer also took care of the hydromechanical “automatic”: the oil change schedule is every 45,000 km. The operation is very simple, just like in the good old days. There is a normal drain plug on the bottom, and an oil dipstick on top, through the hole of which oil is poured. There are risks on the dipstick to check the level on a heated box.

LOOKING-LIGHT

Despite the similarity of the nodes in the engine compartment, the rest of the sedan and hatchback are strikingly different from each other (this was the case with the cars of the previous generation). The front panels are different. In the rear suspension - a beam for a hatchback and a multi-link for a sedan. In a sedan, the fuel tank is habitually placed under the rear row of seats, while in its strange brother it is under the front! To replace the fuel filter, which is built into the pump, the hatchback will have to remove the center console ... The operation is not very complicated, but the fact remains. Technological holes in the floor of both bodies are large enough to freely remove the pump. It is fixed with a cover, which requires a special puller. The pump must be completely disassembled to replace the filter. Without experience, it is better not to mess with this operation - it will become more expensive. The replacement interval is 90,000 km.

No less surprised and different brake mechanisms. If for other models this is usually associated with unequal engine power, then in the case of Civics, the logic is unclear. Both cars have disc brakes in a circle, but at the same time a different design and thickness of the brake discs, original calipers, calipers and pads! When servicing brakes, the question of what type of body you have does not seem so irrelevant anymore - does it? The technology for replacing elements is identical, just the mounts are different. In a sedan, the front calipers are fixed with “14” bolts, and the rear ones are “12”. In the hatchback, instead of them, guides for the hexagon “by 7” are used. The brake fluid change interval is longer than most brands - 45,000 km or 3 years.

The front optics are also different, but this did not affect the process of replacing the lamps. All cartridges are fixed by turning. Access to them is very limited, but removing the headlights is also not an option - you will have to dismantle the bumper. We change the lamps in the outer corners of the headlights through the fender liner. Sometimes it happens! The rest - as usual. On the right, the filler neck of the washer reservoir interferes, but it can be removed. On the left, access is limited by the battery and a small plastic pad between it and the fuse box. The latter is fixed on two simple clips, and trained servicemen do not touch the battery.

The rear optics of the hatchback is half diode, it has two times fewer conventional lamps than the sedan. For both, all cartridges are fixed by turning, except for the illumination of the number. In case of failure of the diodes, the optics elements will have to be replaced as an assembly. The lamps in the lanterns, which are in the hatchback trunk lid, are changed through convenient plugs in the lining. And the elements in the wings will have to be removed, since there are no technological holes. To replace the number plate lamps in a hatchback and a sedan, we take out their cases from the outside.

In a sedan, to replace the lamps in the lamps in the trunk lid, it is enough to bend its trim. If access is still not enough, then you can remove the next few clips. That is, it is not necessary to completely dismantle the skin. A similar story with the lanterns in the wings. We take out a few clips and bend the skin, and it's very simple.

The rear foglights of both cars are located in the bumper: in the center of the sedan, and on the left of the hatchback (the reflector is on the right). To replace the lamps, you need to crawl from the inside, their cartridges are fixed by turning. The sedan has a towing hook that interferes: you have to remove the two nearest bumper clips and bend it a little. On a hatchback, you need to remove the bumper boot under the foglight.

For the overall assessment of the Civic, let's take the average score for the sedan and hatchback - 8.85. There has never been such a good result! You can be as surprised as you like at the illogical differences between the two cars (what is the gas tank under the front seats of a hatchback worth!), But the simplicity and thoughtfulness of maintenance put everything in its place.

And how do you like the combination of upholstery and color scheme? Black color is just right, do you agree? It's cozy and warm in this cabin. I have a trunk that is quite decent for the size class, with a rigid shelf that separates the cabin space from the luggage compartment. And I have a pleasant surprise for you - a trick, how you can change the location of the rear seats. There are two options. The first is the usual one: lower the backs into the cabin (together or separately, and the width of the backs is different), while getting an almost flat floor. This is in case you need to stretch out to your full height during the trip in order to sleep in comfort, if you suddenly cannot find a place to sleep in a roadside hotel.

The second option is much more interesting. I'm not such a big car. But I can immerse large overall loads without laying out the rear seats in a flat floor. Because the rear seats can be folded vertically (!), Raising the horizontal part of the rear sofa up! At the same time, look at the floor, it is almost flat, without the usual protruding central tunnel. Thus, folding the rear seats vertically, you will get an impressive space for overall luggage. It's so convenient! Few people can boast of such a transformation in the “C” class.

I pass road joints quietly and comfortably - thanks to Michelin Primacy HP tires with a dimension of 225/45 / R17, everything happens without annoying bumps and vibrations. However, if you still end up with a wheel in a decent hole, then keep in mind that the suspension takes such antics of the driver painfully. What do you want? In front I have a scheme of McPherson-type levers on one ball joint, and in the back there is a torsion beam - that's what you get. However, back to the engine. My engine is responsive, cheerful and cheerful. Of course, I don’t keep a red-headed K20A under the hood, but for a 1.8-liter single-shaft SOHC engine, it’s enough for me to frolic. Profitability is a controversial topic for me, depending on how I use it. I know: Honda has to be fast, and I try my best to prove it to you, and it's not so easy. My weight is impressive - more than 1,300 kg! The automatic transmission mode in which we are driving now allows me to turn my heart up to 6,000 rpm. However, peppy torque wakes up only to 4000 rpm. Atmospheric engines live at the top, and they need to be turned! Up to this tachometer mark - I'm sorry, but it will be boring. With "mechanics" it would be much more interesting, but we have an automatic, but it is not easy ... with the possibility of manual gear shifting ... with paddle shifters! But this is a completely different song. Don't believe? Now make sure.

Stop dragging along the back streets and vomiting under the cameras along the avenues. Let's take the freeway. Switch the selector to "S"! Now you just need to live up to 4000 rpm of the first gear, then everything will be very entertaining: loud, with a roar, and much more harshly!
