Gislaved nord frost 100 reviews driving. Winter tire test: Can't walk or drive because of icy conditions

Advantages

not noisy

Flaws

for 2 seasons there are practically no spikes left, you grind out of the blue. and if you stop, you won’t go uphill.

A comment

Worst tire I've ever had.

Ilnar

Advantages

Good winter tires. Skated the season, satisfied. Road holding is excellent. I don't remember getting stuck on it. The spikes appear to be intact. I recommend. Before that, there were Cordiant Polar 2, they left a bad impression.

Flaws

Didn't reveal.

A comment

Great alternative to expensive tires. Now, instead of the 100th, they produce the 200th. I don't think the quality is worse.

Igor

Advantages

Noise is minimal, dry asphalt is predictable, rowing in the snow.

Flaws

Ice - solid 3 three. Very soft, well, very soft - and this is a minus.

A comment

Just adequate tires, everything is expected and predictable. Those. It is possible for such a sum and it is better to look for rubber.

Alfred

Advantages

Rides well in snow, porridge, asphalt

Flaws

Ice - does not go at all, rolled snow does not hold, blows. does not like the track, weak sidewall. can’t move on level ground if there is ice

A comment

The snow is falling well

Denis

Advantages

Great tires for the money. The road grip is wonderful, it also rows well in porridge and snow, given that the rear-wheel drive engine is still predictable in ice. I have skated it for 2 seasons already, during the first winter I did not lose a single spike, during the second winter no losses were found during a cursory examination. I am completely satisfied with the rubber. Summer tires are also gislaved. I advise

Flaws

Azamat

Advantages

The rubber is soft, the studs sit tight, in one season only one stud on the front wheel was cut off (it was cut off, the base of the stud remained in the tire). The best value for money.

Flaws

There are no disadvantages.

The main thing is to choose the right profile width, you need to take into account the weight of the car and the road surface on which you will have to drive more often. To drive in the city on bare asphalt with ice, I chose a profile width of 185 mm (it throws the car on snow porridge - for such a profile width, the car's mass of 1080 kg was not enough, but the tires behave confidently on ice and asphalt).

The winter season in the Moscow region is over, the conclusion is this! In November 2015, there was a choice about buying winter tires. The choice is simply huge and there are even more reviews, about each there are both positive and negative. I spent 2 days re-reading, reviewing the tests and decided to take the GISLAVED NORD-FROST-100. In the store for 15 radius they asked for 3600 for a cylinder, I found an online store and bought it for 2900. I installed it at the end of November and changed it on 17.04. Excellent road holding, not much more noisy than summer, driving both on asphalt and on ice and wet roads. For the whole winter I did not get upset at her even once! To be honest, my driving is dashing, and from a standstill I can slip and enter 140 turns, the result is 4 and 5 spikes on the front, on the rear wheels everything is in place.

Gislaved is a world-famous Swedish brand that has been pleasing car enthusiasts with quality products for many years. We all have been waiting for a long time and finally we have waited - meet the new product of 2013, a worthy successor to the super popular "fifth" Nord Frost - the updated model Gislaved NordFrost 100. Photo:

Offhand, the differences and innovations are a smaller number of spikes, as a result, the tire is more “quiet”, but this did not affect the grip properties. so in the new model, “less is more”.

Rubber is slightly above the average price range, but is positioned as a premium class.

Characteristics

  • Sizes from 13 to 19 inches (suitable for both sedans and SUVs)
  • Also a huge choice in width - from 155 to 265 mm
  • Profile height - there is also plenty to choose from - from 40 to 80
  • Studded tire with maximum speed up to 190 km/h

The choice of sizes is simply huge, the Swedes immediately try to embrace the entire consumer segment, especially knowing the quality of their tires, they easily succeed. I will indicate here a few of the most popular sizes and their prices so that you can estimate on average:

175 / 65R14 86T - a popular size for the VAZ-14.15 and many others - the price is 2700 rubles
215 / 65R16 102T - for many SUVs (load index is higher accordingly) - a tire costs 4400 rubles (not cheap, but not so expensive either).

In principle, for my Chevrolet Niva, I am considering buying studded tires up to 5,000 rubles per wheel for the winter. And the hundredth Gislaved is included in the list of contenders on a par with - also a super tire.

225 / 65R17 102T - a large tire and the corresponding price is 6700 rubles.

Tread pattern and appearance

Daring, it will clearly stand out among others, so the appearance of your car will be "cooler" with these tires. although, of course, the point here is not at all in “beauty”, but in the grip and driving performance of rubber. Which, by the way, are top notch.

Here is the tread pattern of Gislaved Nord Frost 100:

But for comparison, the previous version - Nord Frost V:

As you can see, the spikes actually became smaller, but they became steeper, so to speak. The shape of the spike is triangular, so the ice gnaws brutally.

The tread pattern is such that it will perfectly drain water and snow, both loose and “porridge”. Well, the spikes will cling to the ice.

Test results

She took a very worthy third place after the eighth Hakka and Continental. Excellent results, considering that the price for it will be at least 2-3 times cheaper. Excellent performance on loose snow, ice, slush and asphalt.

Owner reviews

Here it is worth adding that especially for SUVs (SUVs) you can find XL models on sale (increased load index, jeeps are heavy after all), they initially come with a reinforced sidewall (pictured):

So, the rubber is soft, exactly the same as the fifth Gislaved. On the one hand, this is good, because it will be wonderful to drive on ice. But this can affect wear resistance, although the developers assure us that “reinforcing” elements are included in the rubber composition and the rubber will be “stronger” than analogues by as much as 2 percent.

The manufacturer is also encouraging - this is nothing less than Germany. Many of my iconic riders ride Gislaved, and their fifth Nord Frost can be called a legend. So the hundredth model should be at least no worse. But, I think, the Swedes introduced a lot of innovations not in vain. So rubber should be "just a bomb." Moderately soft, quiet, with a special shape of spikes and the price is quite normal. Take note. Well, for the price just fine, you have to take))

And yet, most often when choosing this model is compared with and with. There are already reviews on these tires, so if you are still “in your choice”, you can read the reviews of these good tires.

Also included in the test were:
  • Avatyre Freeze - domestic development
  • Gislaved Nord Frost 100
  • Toyo Observe GSi-5
  • Hankook Winter I*Pike RS+

On each set of tires 205/55 R16 before the tests, the pilots drove 500 km to break them in. After that, the organizers checked the protrusion of the spikes and the hardness of the rubber.

To assess the longitudinal and lateral grip on the ice, the organizers measured the acceleration time, the length of the braking distance and the lap time along the track. Each set was tested at least 7-10 times to identify errors in the results. For a more accurate calculation of the transverse adhesion, a twelve-meter rearrangement was used. This maneuver is also called the "elk test" - a quick detour of a sudden obstacle (moose on the road).

To avoid the subjectivity of the pilot's assessment, several people tested the same tires. They rated for directional stability and handling. Course stability was tested at a speed of 90-110 km / h. The pilot rotated the steering wheel at small angles and observed the behavior of the car on the test tires.

In another test, patency in the snow was checked, the ability to overcome snowdrifts, maneuver, move off and move in reverse. The organizers of the test considered that this is as important for winter tires as all of the above. Goodyear UltraGrip Ice Arctic performed best in this test. According to the organizers, with these tires, a front-wheel drive car turned into a real all-terrain vehicle!

Ride and noise in the cabin were evaluated on different surfaces and at different speeds. After testing the tires on ice and snow, the experts assessed how protruding the studs were in the tires.

On asphalt, tires were tested for such an indicator as fuel consumption. All tires were tracked in both directions to compensate for the effects of road inclines or light breeze. The length of the braking distance on dry and wet pavement and directional stability were also evaluated.

And the most recent test was to inspect the tires and count the spikes that had come out. Bridgestone tires lost the most - 18 studs. In second place were Toyo tires, which lost 7 studs.

As a result, Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 became the winner of the test according to the results of all tests. In second place, with a margin of just half a percentage point, were Continental ContiIceContact 2 tires.

The test results for winter studded tires 205/55 R16 are shown in the tables below.

Gislaved Nord Frost 100 - stability on winter roads

After tightening the requirements in many European countries regarding the use of studded tires, the Swedish brand with German roots has released the Gislaved Nord Frost 100 model, which meets all modern requirements. So, during its development, it was taken into account that no more than 50 spikes should be located per meter of tire circumference. At the same time, the developers managed to solve this problem without compromising performance:

This was achieved through the introduction of new technological solutions proposed by the manufacturer. The new tread pattern was created using computer simulations. Its large blocks are located in such a way as not to impede the rolling of the wheel, while due to the complex shape with a large number of stiffening ribs, they provide excellent grip on any type of road surface that can be found in winter.

Particular attention was paid to the design of the new spike. A new design of this tire element was proposed, which allows for excellent grip on an icy surface, despite the smaller number of studs per unit tread area. The fit system ensures that the stud does not fly out of the tread when driving on a hard surface, and it will last the entire life of the tire.

To combat aquaplaning, wide channels for water drainage are located between the tread blocks. Their location allows them to self-clean when going into mud or snow, so traction remains consistently high on any surface. Rigid groove edges improve tire flotation and handling stability.

To optimize grip, the blocks are shaped with three-dimensional wave-shaped sipes. They increase the strength of the tread and reduce the intensity of its wear. In addition, moisture residues that have not gone through the grooves are removed from the tire through them. Additional stiffening ribs stabilize handling on slippery roads.

Tests have shown that Gislaved Nord Frost 100, with all the restrictions imposed by law, has improved performance. It handles well on any surface, providing stable grip and short braking distances.

Synonyms: Gislaved NF 100, Gislaved NordFrost 100, Gislaved NF100, Gislaved NordFrost 100

After a significant tightening of requirements regarding the operation of winter studded tires, as well as the adoption of a new marking in European countries, almost all tire manufacturers have released a number of new models. Gislaved, now owned by the German concern Continental AG, was no exception, presenting a number of new products. One of them was the Gislzved Nord Frost 100. This winter studded tire has replaced the Nord Frost 5 model, which has been the most popular in our country for many years.

Spike Tri-Star CD

Despite the severe restrictions on the maximum number of studs, the Swedish tire manufacturers managed to find a solution to bypass it. It was the new TriStar CD spike, created and released in Finland. Its height is quite impressive 11 mm with a diameter of 8 mm. To ensure the stability of the position, the Finns equipped the spike with a carbide insert in the form of a three-pointed star, which is reflected in its name. The combination of large sizes and this shape of the insert allows the stud to be firmly held in the tread throughout the entire life of the tire. At the same time, its weight was reduced due to the use of aluminum as the main material for the manufacture of the spike. In turn, the reduction in weight favorably affected the mass of unsprung masses, as well as rolling resistance. As a result, the car will be easier to drive and consume less fuel.

Optimized tread block shape

Nord Frost 100 has excellent traction on slippery surfaces, both longitudinally and transversely. This was achieved by radically reworking the V-shaped symmetrical directional pattern.

Tread blocks have become much larger. But, despite the decrease in their number, the number of coupling edges available to the contact patch has increased significantly. The Swedish tire manufacturers gave the tread blocks a complex polygonal shape containing many corners and edges. At the same time, they are located in different directions, which gave the grip properties reliability and stability, regardless of the characteristics of the roadway.

Straight sipes in the central part of the tread

In the central part of the tread pattern, there is a longitudinal rib consisting of a plurality of polygonal blocks. Due to the fact that they are interconnected by a rigid jumper, the tire is characterized by excellent directional stability and instantaneous response to steering turns. In addition, the many corners and long edges provide additional contact patch edges, making traction even more reliable.

With approximately the same goals, the Swedish tire manufacturers equipped this tread element with a large number of straight sipes. They perform several functions at once. First of all, this is the formation of additional clutch edges. In addition, when driving on wet roads, straight sipes work like windshield wipers, "brushing" excess moisture into the drainage channels, thereby increasing the tire's resistance to hydroplaning.

S-shaped sipes in the shoulder areas of the tread

Another feature of the tread pattern Gislaved Nord Frost 100 is a huge number of wavy lamellas covering each of the blocks of the shoulder zones. Like straight sipes, these tread elements perform several functions at once. First of all, this is the formation of many additional grip edges, which has the most favorable effect when driving not only on snow, but also on ice.

In addition, the presence of these elements significantly improves handling on asphalt. At the moment of contact with the road surface, the S-shaped walls of the lamellas are very tightly fixed to each other, which significantly increases the rigidity of the tread block. Due to this effective solution, tire reactions became more accurate and predictable.

Multifunctional drainage system

Unlike the previous model, Nord Frost 100 received a more "advanced" drainage system, which is distinguished by the ability to perform a number of other functions. Thanks to the original layout of the tread blocks, cruciform channels appeared in the shoulder areas, which perfectly hold the snow mass. Due to this design feature, the new Swedish tire has become much better to hold on to a snowy surface. At the same time, the shape of the channels contributes to the rapid removal of snow.

In addition, Nord Frost 100 exhibits excellent resistance to hydroplaning and slashplaning. This is largely due to the V-shaped tread pattern, the drainage channels of which are located at a significant angle relative to the direction of movement. When the wheel rotates, snow and water under the influence of centrifugal forces quickly leave the tread pattern, ensuring the contact patch is clean and dry.

Main features of the Gislaved Nord Frost 100 tire

- excellent grip on any winter surface, even in the most adverse weather conditions, thanks to an optimized V-shaped tread pattern;
- increased cross-country ability in deep snow due to the large size of the tread blocks, as well as a significant distance between them;
- high stability and reliability of control when moving on ice is provided by an aluminum spike with a solid insert of a triangular shape;
- excellent resistance to aquaplaning and slashplaning, thanks to the many drainage channels located in different directions;
- special cruciform grooves in the shoulder areas, due to which the tread holds snow more reliably, thereby providing excellent grip on snowy surfaces;
— a high level of comfort is provided by a low level of resonant noise and vibration;
- a lot of straight and wavy sipes made it possible to saturate the contact patch with coupling edges to the limit.
