The now popular SUV class cars have partially lured to their side those who had previously looked closely at large passenger station wagons. However, one should not think that the latter will soon finally give up their positions and remain either in the possession of inveterate retrogrades or in taxi companies. After all, crossovers are for the most part a fashion that is transient. And station wagons are our daily worries, heavy and light, pleasant and not very pleasant, but, alas, there is no getting away from them. For nothing, perhaps “univers” is translated from French as “the whole world”.

Middle peasants Comparison test

On the Russian market, there are a great many available, with a base price of less than 700,000 rubles. middle class models. There are cars of European, Japanese, Korean brands. Diesel and petrol engines. Plus a full set of bodies: "sedan", "station wagon", "hatchback". In a word, cars for every taste.

From Avant-Garde to Classic (Laguna (2007)) Test Drive

Among other cars of the “family” class, “Renault Laguna” has always stood out for its non-trivial design and originality. On the one hand, this allowed the first two generations of the model to acquire a small but stable circle of fans. On the other hand, the avant-garde image scared off many potential buyers, which prevented Laguna from gaining truly wide popularity. The third generation of the machine is designed to cut this Gordian knot. From now on “Laguna” professes above all classical values. Nevertheless, non-standard solutions in its design also found a place.

In early 2011, the French company Renault presented a restyled Laguna coupe at the motor show in Bologna, Italy. The model differs from its predecessor by the presence of LED lights in the head optics and 17-inch rims. The dashboard in the cabin of the Renault Laguna coupe received decorative elements in the form of stitching.

The engine range of Renault Laguna Coupe includes several petrol and diesel power units. The latter are represented by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, available with 150, 175 and 180 hp, as well as a 3.0-liter V6 that produces 240 “horses”.

Options and prices Renault Laguna Coupe

Gasoline engines for the Renault Laguna coupe are represented by a 2.0-liter "aspirated" with a return of 150 forces, a supercharged unit of the same volume with a capacity of 170 and 205 hp, as well as a V-shaped 3.5-liter "six" (240 hp .With.).

As transmissions, buyers can choose six-speed manual or automatic transmissions. In September 2013, Russian dealers began accepting orders for the updated Renault Laguna coupe 2014 model year, which received the R-Link multimedia system, which includes navigation, a Bose audio system, as well as Bluetooth and a USB port.

As before, it was decided to supply us with the only modification of a two-door with a 2.0-liter gasoline engine with a capacity of 170 hp. and automatic. From standstill to hundreds of cars accelerates in 9.2 seconds, and the top speed reaches 220 km / h. There is no choice of trim levels - you can buy a new Renault Laguna Coupe with a fixed set of equipment at a price of 1,529,000 rubles.

But this includes six airbags, ABS, ESP, light and rain sensors, rotary bi-xenon headlights, full power accessories, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, cruise control, engine start with a button and leather upholstery. Surcharge for metallic painting 15,000 rubles.

Renault Laguna third generation had a hard time. The previous model significantly spoiled the reputation of the Frenchman: regular electronic glitches, poor build quality and massive engine failures, especially diesel 2.2 dCi.

The third Laguna, which came in September 2007, faced a difficult task - to get rid of notoriety. But, as it turned out later, all efforts were in vain. Renault sold 250,000 Lagunas in Europe in 2002, 90,000 in 2008, about 50,000 over the next three years, and just under 30,000 in 2012.

But the hero of our story is Laguna Coupe. She was assigned the role of a stylish sports car. The model was distinguished by rich equipment, and supercharged engines with a volume of at least 2 liters were installed under the hood. Even 6-cylinder units with a volume of 3 liters were present in the arsenal.

They say Renault Laguna Coupe was originally designed as an open model with a hard top. This is hinted at by the strong slope of the windshield and the characteristic design of the B-pillars. Probably, the cost and retail price of the coupe-cabriolet turned out to be too high, so only the closed version went into the series. However, the Coupe came out by no means cheap. The high cost was offset by rich equipment. The owner received a dual-zone climate control system, an audio system with navigation, leather seats with electric adjustments, and so on and so forth.

The problem is that, despite the interesting interior design, some elements look really cheap. Yes, in general, the finishing materials are of good quality and soft to the touch. But when an Audi A5 comparable in age is nearby, you will immediately realize that the Laguna Coupe has already “aged” quite a bit, and the German’s interior does not look as tired as that of the Frenchman. Therefore, the two-door A5 is almost twice as expensive.

So, what do you get for this money? Enough space in front in the longitudinal and transverse direction. However, there is no space above the head, and only children will sit in the back. The trunk isn't completely useless once the rear seats are folded down. Then you can carry something long.

Frameless doors, although they look spectacular, at high speeds generate a whistle of the wind, giving the feeling that the windows are not closed properly. However, background noise can be tolerated up to about 140 km/h. Over time, you will get used to both the strange position behind the wheel with outstretched arms, and the sluggishness of on-board systems that are reluctant to press buttons.

On the run

Do not expect sports habits from Laguna. And the 4Control active rear-wheel steering system only makes the car too nervous. The coupe does not like sudden changes in direction. Moreover, every time Renault behaves completely differently and is somewhat unpredictable. Understeer is a natural part of the Laguna Coupe when cornering quickly with a wide radius, but the reactions to steering commands are too sharp. The element of the coupe is high-quality highways.

The machine, by modern standards, is a little lazy, but if necessary, it can be helped in manual mode. Perhaps the biggest disappointment will be the suspension. In corners, the car sways a little, and at the same time it does not filter bumps well enough - the joints are clearly transmitted to the body. On rough roads, then something knocks, then something creaks - there is insufficient torsional rigidity of the body.

Engines

Delicate and weak diesel 1.5 dCi, fortunately, Laguna Coupe did not get. The diesel range starts with the 2.0 dCi with 150 hp. and a torque of 340 Nm. Later, a more powerful version appeared with a return of 173 and at the end of 178 hp.

The 2.0 dCi with the designation M9R has a number of interesting solutions, such as liquid cooling of the turbine. This increases its reliability, but does not mean that the oil can be changed less frequently. And although the engine no longer has those fatal problems that it used to have, Renault recommended oil change intervals (15-20 thousand km) adversely affect the condition of the liners and the turbine. The timing chain lasts a long time. But heavy loads on an engine that has not yet been warmed up lead to cracking of the cylinder head. Almost 400 Nm of torque finishes off the 6-speed manual gearbox and even axle shafts pretty quickly.

At least the injectors can be replaced easily and inexpensively, and the DPF filter is only a problem for those who move mostly around the city. The service life of the particulate filter is 250-300 thousand km. The EGR valve is controlled by a reliable servo, but over time the EGR cooler may need to be replaced.

The 3-liter 6-cylinder turbodiesel provides good dynamics. The only pity is that it was because of the “frail” machine that the engine torque was reduced from 550 to 450 Nm. As a result, the difference between 3.0 dCi and the most powerful 2.0 dCi is noticeable only at very high speeds and long climbs. Despite the fact that the maximum torque is severely limited, the box gets "great". Therefore, checking the state of the machine is very important here.

The six-cylinder diesel engine is not bad, but due to the large size and limited access to the engine compartment, repairs will be very expensive. The mechanical part of the unit is quite reliable. The disadvantage is the turbocharger, located in the collapse of the block. One has only to tighten with an oil change, as it immediately sinters.

The best choice is petrol engines. In particular, we are talking about a 2-liter turbo engine with a capacity of 170 and 204 hp. The weak version works more consistently with 6-speed mechanics. The machine "eats" some of the power, giving ease to the character of the Laguna. It is worth noting that the turbo engine is prone to the accumulation of soot. True, it all depends on the driving style, the regularity of the service and the quality of the fuel.

3.5 V6 is a rather rare engine that the Frenchman inherited from the Nissan 350Z. The mechanical part is reliable, but the past decides a lot: how often the potential of the motor was used, and whether the oil was changed on time. During operation, there are problems with the cooling system, and a tired engine begins to “eat” oil. Considering that the Laguna pretty quickly discourages any desire to drive fast, the Japanese aspirated lives for a long time. True, he is very voracious ... 12 liters per 100 km, against 9-10 liters of a 4-cylinder turbo engine. At the same time, the difference in dynamics is not great.

Typical problems and malfunctions

Before buying, it is very important to check the gearbox. Unfortunately, neither mechanics, much less automatic, are reliable. If there are "problems", changing the oil will only partially help. The owner should always be ready to repair the box.

During operation, minor malfunctions also pop up. For example, moisture appears in the headlights, or door seals begin to leak. However, the latter may also indicate poor repair after the accident. Trouble can deliver power seats. From time to time, the air conditioner strikes, or the on-board systems do not respond to commands from the central console in front of the armrest. Quite often, cruise control fails due to a switch malfunction. Heated seats may also fail.

Problems with the keyless entry system usually occur when the battery in the smart key is weak. And if the card key accidentally ends up in the trunk, the car can lock the locks on its own after closing the lid. The owners faced a stalemate more than once.

Conclusion

Renault Laguna Coupe is a car that, above all, should be liked. To buy such a machine is often driven by the desire to stand out for little money. Still, you don't see a car like this every day. The choice on the market is very narrow, so there is not much to choose from. As a rule, the Coupe has low mileage and receives good service. The most reasonable choice is the 2-liter turbo version, which combines reliability, dynamics and a reasonable cost of operation.

Sales market: Russia.

The Laguna Coupe is Renault's first luxury coupe. The stylish design is naturally elegant and combines the restraint and power of a large coupé. The sweeping outlines of the Laguna coupe are complemented by a wide, aggressive-style radiator grille and predatory headlights. Other distinctive features are frameless side windows and LED optics. The first spy photos of the Renault Laguna Coupe hit the net back in November 2006. The production version of the Laguna coupe premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2008. The wheelbase of the coupe is shorter than that of the hatchback and station wagon, and has a size of 2694 mm, the minimum turning radius is 5.41 m. The declared ride height is 120 mm. Tire size - 215/60 R16 or 215/50 R17, depending on the modification. The luggage compartment of the coupe has a volume of 423 liters, it can be increased by folding the rear seatbacks (60:40).

Laguna III has new security enhancements. For optimum side impact protection, the vehicle is equipped with a new generation of dual thorax and pelvic side airbags with differential pressure detection and dual impact sensors in the doors. This cuts the deployment time of the airbag in half. In the event of a frontal impact, the driver and passenger will also be protected by adaptive airbags. To increase the effectiveness of shock absorption, the mode of operation of these pillows is determined automatically depending on the body size of the person. More expensive versions of the car will offer cruise control, dynamic cornering lights, rear parking sensors.

Renault Laguna Coupe is a comfortable and richly equipped car. It is endowed with a beautiful appearance, excellent driving performance and of all Laguna is capable of delivering maximum driving pleasure. There are also a number of disadvantages. This is the cost of spare parts and possible problems with qualified service. Often there are malfunctions in the electrical part. At the same time, used Laguna look advantageous in terms of price when compared with analogues of other brands.
