Ford Scorpio II - description of the model. Reviews Ford Scorpio Pros and cons

The second generation of the popular Scorpio model of the European branch of Ford, contrary to expectations, did not repeat the phenomenal success of the first generation car, despite the rich equipment and a higher level of comfort of the car.

Legendary Models

The Ford Scorpio II is a mid-range sedan and station wagon produced by Ford Motor Company Europe. The car belonged to the second, last generation of the popular model, launched in 1994 and discontinued in 1998.

The second generation Ford Scorpio was in many ways structurally similar to the first generation car. The lower part of the body, the spars and the floor remained unchanged, and the engines were installed the same as those used in later releases, taking into account all modifications.

New design solutions have also appeared, for example, an adjustable rear suspension in a more load-bearing modification in a station wagon.

The appearance of the car caused considerable controversy. Europeans in general didn't like the new design with pop-eyed headlights and oddly shaped trunk, which led to modest sales, as buyers preferred less controversial models from BMW and Mercedes.

The name of the designer who created the second generation Scorpio, by the way, is still kept secret by Ford Motor Company. In general, the reaction of the public and the press to the updated model was negative.

Jeremy Clarkson, co-host of the BBC's Top Gear, wrote that "with the release of the new Scorpio, Ford Motor has summed up all the debate about which car is considered the ugliest car in history." His colleague, Quentin Wilson, echoing Clarkson, said in one of the issues of the same program for 1997 that “the new Scorpio, thanks to the sad“ eyes ”and the overall design, looks so heroically ugly that it seems as if its design is the work of hands at the same time Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles.

At the beginning of 1998, a restyling was made. The car received a new headlight surround and grille to make the front and rear of the car more like each other. The rear optics have also been replaced with a less noticeable one. However, already in the summer of the same year, the end of the production of the model was announced. The implementation was so unsuccessful (although the company claimed that the planned figures were achieved), and so many cars were produced that the new Scorpio was enough for at least another two years of sales.

Technical features Ford Scorpio II

There were two main engines on the Scorpio of both the first and second generations: both gasoline four-cylinders, with a volume of 2 and 2.3 liters, as well as a six-cylinder V-shaped volume of 2.9. A rare all-wheel drive modification was equipped with a 2.9-liter V6 engine, upgraded by the British engineering firm Cosworth, which develops engines for sports cars based on serial ones. There was also a modification with a 2.5 L SCD TD I4 turbodiesel. The transmission could be manual (five-speed manual) or automatic. The machine, especially in combination with 2.4 and 2.9 engines, is known for its low reliability. This quality is typical for many "machines" produced by Ford of the nineties.

Regardless of the volume, all Scorpio gasoline engines consumed a lot of fuel - 10-15 liters per hundred kilometers in the combined cycle, due to the considerable weight of the car.

Already in those years, great importance was attached to the safety of the driver and passengers, and in Scorpio two, four airbags were already installed in a number of configurations (two front and two side). In addition, additional reinforced stiffeners are welded into the doors, and the front spars are designed taking into account programmable deformation zones.

Pros and cons of Ford Socrpio II

All the “weak points” characteristic of the first generation Scorpio due to the continuity of the platform were also observed in the updated model. The main body problem of Scorpio has always been rear arches and sills, made of too thin metal.

If we talk about the pros, then an important factor that attracted buyers, in the case of Ford (not necessarily this particular model), has always been a flexible policy regarding the formation of sets of options. In addition to, in fact, the configuration (for example, Chia), there were. As a result, there were such "sets" as GLX / Ghia, Ghia / Ultima and so on.

In the secondary market, cars of this model are rarely found in the basic configuration, therefore, as a rule, choosing a copy for purchase, you can find in the car a device for heating washer nozzles, headlight washers, cruise control, an on-board cell phone, a CD changer, leather seats, wood trim and more.

Much has been done in Scorpio for the comfort of the driver and passengers, for example, dual-zone climate control. The radio tape recorder, which, by the way, reads only CDs that existed during the production of Scorpio II, is controlled by a switch that allows you to select tracks and radio programs. It is located to the left of the steering wheel, there is also a volume control. There is also an analog clock on the front panel.

Glasses of all four doors are equipped with electric lifts, mirrors are also regulated by electric motors and are equipped with memory and heating.

The seat adjustment is also electrically adjustable, which works in all directions, including for the lumbar cushion. The settings can be memorized, the memory block allows you to store up to three sets of settings. The trunk is also equipped with an electric drive, activated by a button on the alarm key fob.

In 1998, a limousine based on the Ford Scorpio was made for the Royal Family of the Netherlands.

It is noteworthy that in the V6 engine, both in the simple and in the Cosworth modification, 5 overhead camshafts are used - 4 camshafts in the block heads and a central camshaft without cams. A pulley is mounted on the central shaft to drive the oil pump.

It is difficult to say what exactly played a key role in the fate of the flagship of the European branch of Ford - the second generation Scorpio: extravagant appearance or high cost. Never gaining popularity, he became the last representative of the company's family of business-class cars.

BODY

The range of modifications of the second generation Ford Scorpio consists of a 4-door sedan and a 5-door Touring station wagon. Sedans are more common, but station wagons are a rarity. The bodies of all cars are galvanized, so you can not be afraid of the appearance of rust. But you need to beware of accidents, since there are practically no “used” body parts, and new ones are expensive.

Due to clogging of the drainage hole in the body, the section of the wiring harness, laid in the area of the right wing near the windshield, constantly gets wet during rains, and may “rot” over time. A sign of a problem is the failure of electrical equipment, therefore, to prevent the “disease”, you need to regularly clean the drainage hole.

Ergonomics claim - the trunk lid opens to a small height, which is why there is a risk of hitting your head on a protruding lock. It is inconvenient to use the ashtray in the cabin - it is placed too close to the gearshift lever.

SALON

Salon Scorpio - one of the most spacious among competitors. Thanks to a wide range of seat and steering column adjustments, a person of any height and physique can normally get behind the wheel. In addition, most versions are “stuffed” very richly. Compared to its predecessor, the sedan's trunk is 25 liters smaller (465 liters in total), although, unlike most competitors, its size can be increased by folding the rear seat.

ENGINE

The line of power units consists of three upgraded engines, inherited "by inheritance". - gasoline with a volume of 2.0 liters, 2.9 liters and turbodiesel 2.5 liters. as well as two gasoline engines designed specifically for this model. - 2.0 l 16V and 2.3 l. According to the employees of the branded service station, with proper operation, the engine life before replacing the rings is 250-300 thousand km. Diesel versions do not “digest” domestic diesel fuel well, and over time, fuel injectors fail in them. In addition, due to the lower location of the camshaft and the use of a separate head for each cylinder, it is very difficult and expensive to repair such a motor.

Every 100 thousand km on gasoline engines, you need to change the timing chain along with the tensioner, dampers, as well as the oil pump drive chain. The exception is the 207-horsepower unit. On cars with a mileage of over 200 thousand km, the throttle position sensor may fail, which is manifested by “dips” when accelerating.

TRANSMISSION

Ford Scorpio was equipped with 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic gearboxes. According to experts, all of them are quite reliable and in the process of operation with timely maintenance there are no serious problems with them. The only malfunction of the "mechanics" is the leakage of the stuffing box of the backstage of the gear lever.

SUSPENSION

The undercarriage of the "scorpions" is so soft and comfortable that our roads seem just perfect. The rear suspension of this car is devoid of the main drawback of its predecessor - the curvature of the levers due to the untimely replacement of silent blocks. The creators have significantly strengthened silent blocks, which increased their service life to 200-250 thousand km.

In the front suspension, every 30 thousand km, you will have to change the stabilizer struts. The rear silent blocks of the front levers will last a little longer - about 60 thousand km. If the ball joint fails, the repair will require significant costs, since this part is only supplied assembled with the front arm. Fixed and front silent block of the lever.

STEERING

Cars were equipped with rack and pinion steering, which is not very reliable - it is not uncommon for rack oil seals to leak. But the steering rods and tips last a long time.

BRAKE SYSTEM

The braking system is quite effective. However, due to the heavy weight of the car, during active driving after 60-80 thousand km, the front brake discs wear out.

The latest Ford Scorpio is a great choice for the pragmatic buyer. It is endowed with all the positive qualities necessary for business-class cars and, moreover, is cheaper than many competitors - one-year-olds.

Ford Scorpio I CL

Year of issue: 1985

Engine: 2.0 (105 HP) Checkpoint: M5

The most luxurious car with minimal investment!

There are, of course, nuances (there is no cabin filter a priori, the upper air intakes are clogged, not very good sound insulation and a beating steering wheel 3 months after replacing the brake discs).

Inside the place in bulk, easy control (albeit without power steering).

Surprisingly, I got an old tank not rusty! The machine is heavy, does not wear. Suspension soft-soft, even recumbent almost not felt.

I would recommend taking!

In 2001, I bought it in Kaliningrad for $3,700. I travel around the Crimea. Mileage over 400k. Disappointingly satisfied. The 92nd poor eats for hello. 200 issues. I've driven so many cars, I've never seen better. Didn't touch the engine at all. Consumption in summer 6.8 liters, in winter 8. I want a newer car, but I can’t find it better.

I bought it in 1998, I won’t change it for a long time, the car is class: comfortable, roomy, requires minimal maintenance, consumables are inexpensive, a cruiser is on the road, it runs stably like on rails. During the time that I had the car, I corrected only the mistakes and stupidities of the servicemen (the previous owner did not service himself, he used the service). I installed the rear springs from UAZ, cutting off one coil, nozzles 502 from Zhiguli, pressure regulator from the Volga, I order the rest native, these are rubber bands, brake pads.

Review about Ford Scorpio 2.4 left: Anatoly from the city of Ukhta

Wheelbarrow super!!! Large, comfortable, smooth, 120 horsepower overclocked to two hundred flawlessly and asked for more! In terms of breakdowns, brains do not compost. With a rather ragged ride, it sniffs 8 liters in summer, 10 in winter. Spare parts are cheap, even when compared with Golf2. I declare this as a Kaliningrader! For example, an original used one in good condition, the stove motor cost 300 rubles.

Sales market: Europe.

The Ford Scorpio is a middle-class car that replaced the outdated Granada in Europe. Production of the first generation Scorpio began in 1985 at the Ford plant in Cologne, Germany. The first generation was produced in three types of bodies: sedan, 5-door hatchback and station wagon. The second generation Ford Scorpio was put into production in 1994. Unlike its predecessor, it provided only two body types: sedan and wagon. The appearance of the car has undergone significant changes. Convex headlights of the original form stand out in the front, complemented by a “smiling” radiator grill, the rear of the sedan looks unusual with narrow blocks of lamps stretched to the full width of the body. As for the interior, it has also undergone a major redesign - the front panel with square chopped forms has been replaced by a more modern one, with rounded smooth lines. In 1997, a restyling was made, which made slight changes, but few of these cars were produced - already at the end of 1998, the production of the model was curtailed.

Scorpio was famous for its excellent comfort and rich performance even in the basic version, which includes moldings on bumpers and doors, a metallic body color, woodgrain inserts in the cabin, a steering column adjustable for tilt and reach, front seats with height adjustment, a mechanical sunroof, front power windows, ventilation system with filter, radio with 4 speakers. In the options: front foglights, headlight washers, dashboard with armrest, steering wheel trimmed with leather and wood, electric heated mirrors, air conditioning, electric sunroof, rear electric windows. When fully equipped with the Ghia, equipment can include a heated windshield, a variable interval wiper, an 8-speaker audio system, a power driver's seat, climate control, heated front seats, and more. The instrument panel looks spectacular with a built-in clock, fuel computer, instrument cluster with many displayed functions, including even indications such as coolant level, brake pad wear, glow plug indicator, sensors for opening all doors and trunk, fault indicators for each of the exterior bulbs. lighting, etc.

The range of Ford Scorpio engines includes gasoline and diesel engines, a total of six engines are provided: four gasoline and one diesel unit. The most modest of gasoline engines is a 4-cylinder, 8-valve two-liter with a maximum output of 115 hp. and an average consumption within 9.9 l / 100 km. The most powerful, 207 hp 2.9-liter 24-valve V6, is capable of accelerating the Scorpio sedan to 100 km/h in 9 seconds and to a top speed of 225 km/h. The average consumption of gasoline is 12.6 l / 100 km. In addition to these engines, gasoline engines are represented by a V6 version with 2 valves per cylinder and a return of 150 hp, as well as 16-valve "fours" with a volume of 2.0 liters (136 hp) and 2.3 liters (147 hp). The only 2.5 TDI turbodiesel develops a maximum power of 147 hp: top speed - 193 km / h, acceleration to 100 km / h in 11.9 seconds, average consumption - 8.3 l / 100 km. The volume of the fuel tank Ford Scorpio - 70 liters.

All second-generation Ford Scorpios have rear-wheel drive, although the predecessor was also available in all-wheel drive. Scorpio II has an independent suspension of all wheels, which provides high driving performance: comfort and excellent stability. The total length of the car is 4825 mm (4826 mm wagon), body width 1760 mm, height 1388 mm (1442 mm wagon).

The wheelbase of 2770 mm provides a decent supply of space in the cabin and legroom (maximum 1069 mm in front, minimum 950 mm for the station wagon and 979 mm for the sedan). The turning radius of the car is 5.2 m. The standard tire size is 195/65 R15, and alloy wheels and 225/50R16 tires were offered for versions with 24V.

Standard safety systems include driver's airbag, brake system with ABS and full disc brakes (front ventilated for all versions, and for 24V and rear), power steering (for 24V with variable effort). The options offered: a front passenger airbag, a light and rain sensor, rear parking sensors, cruise control, auto-adjust mirrors in reverse, and a traction control system. After restyling, additional equipment included front side airbags.

The rear-wheel drive Ford Scorpio was considered a decent executive class model for its time, with an impressive list of available equipment. In terms of luggage capacity, it has far from outstanding performance - 465 liters for a sedan and 550-1600 liters for a station wagon - however, it has a spacious and comfortable interior. It is worth considering that most Scorpios have decent mileage. The body has an average resistance to corrosion, but the chassis and engines are quite reliable, although the latter are not very economical. Simplicity and maintainability are also one of the advantages of the model.

Read completely

But even if you want to justify it, it is not easy to do so. Ford did a huge favor for the designer by not revealing his name to the public. We limited ourselves to the abstract - "the first Ford completely created using computer-aided design systems." Live, looking at the outlines and individual elements of the body, it is worth noting the "efforts of artificial intelligence." The forms are smooth and streamlined, the aerodynamics are exemplary, and the body itself has grown in size, has lost the rectangular simplicity of its predecessor and is trying to imitate the frame mastodons of the Ford Panther platform. In the meaty sides, you can see the features of the ninth Lincoln Continental, and in the taillights - Mercury Grand Marquis. Alas, the excess of biodesign in the style of the Ford Synthesis 2010 Concept, from which the third Ford Taurus later hatched (also still handsome) killed a good idea.

Inside

But biodesign has clearly benefited the interior. Tidy with laconic scales smoothly flows into the center console. Air ducts combined into one block with an arrow clock look unusual. The feeling of a coherent "cockpit", soaring in the rough cabin of its predecessor, has reached a new level. The build quality and materials are no worse than in Opel Omega or other German classmates. True, with the inserts under the tree there was a bust.

What cannot be taken away from Scorpio is space. At the same time, the wheelbase of 2,770 mm is a worthy figure, but not a record. And still, for the same Omega, it is 40 mm smaller, and even the BMW E34 lags behind, albeit only by a centimeter. But in a Ford, the rear passengers won't even feel if those sitting in front imposingly sit down, pushing their seats back as far as they will go. The environment only encourages such behavior.

3 / 3

The front seats, despite the tangible lateral support, are remembered primarily by the cozy velor upholstery. Comfort is in the first place here, and it’s easy to find a couple of proofs around you: on the left of the seat there is an electric height adjustment, and on the right under the seat there is a pear that regulates the lumbar support. And a rear sofa molded for two with a plump wide armrest would do honor to a different executive sedan.

In move

Scorpio could boast of more or less intelligible dynamics only in the Cosworth version with a V6 2.9 with a power of 207 hp. Therefore, with a far from older two-liter sixteen-valve engine developing 136 hp, you can immediately forget about dynamic movement in space. Pleased with an instant response to the gas, Scorpio confidently starts from a place, but you should not be deceived. By modern standards, acceleration lasts an eternity: according to the passport, it takes almost 13 seconds to reach hundreds. At the same time, despite the seemingly heavy body, the curb weight of the Scorpion (about 1,500 kg) is quite at the level of classmates.

Consumption per 100 km

It's all about the four-speed automatic. With smooth pedaling, the gears change almost imperceptibly - but, unfortunately, the box simply does not recognize a different driving style. Just a little - he starts to act up and get confused in gears. It is not a couple for the motor, which gives out maximum torque, starting from medium speeds, and reaches peak power on the outskirts of the red zone. Cotton brakes after that you take for granted.

By apologizing, Ford is trying to impress me with a smooth ride. And he succeeds: the suspension very delicately works out bumps. Even large pits Scorpio, despite the optional discs Ronal Centra R17, swallows with the confidence of a road dreadnought. Interchanges of tram tracks and speed bumps he does not care at all.

European Fords have always been famous for their decent handling, unlike their overseas relatives. Scorpio, of course, tries to match: it obediently responds to the movements of a huge steering wheel and stands on an arc without frightening rolls ... But there can be no talk of a real drive with such a motor and gearbox. It's hard to imagine a situation in which the "Scorpio" will need his skills as a well-tuned rear-wheel drive car. But stability on a straight line is in the best traditions of those same North American relatives.

A curious monster came out of Ford. With a formidable name, a terrible face, kind and comfortable inside. So it asks for the main role in the movie. Give the European remake of "Breaking Bad"!

Purchase history

In 2010, Vyacheslav began searching for his first car. The budget for the purchase was small: no more than 100,000 rubles. The list of applicants, of course, consisted mainly of products of the domestic auto industry - rare foreign cars were in a very deplorable state. The case was already moving to increase the budget, when suddenly a blue Ford Scorpio of the second generation appeared on the horizon.

Ford, of course, was also not perfect: almost the entire body was corroded by rust. He came to Russia in 1994 new, but over the years he has changed countless owners, among whom were legal entities. The odometer showed 252,000 km. But as it stands, it was the best deal on the market. In addition, it was a large 136-horsepower sedan with an automatic and power accessories.

Repair

Buying, of course, meant not only the joy of operation, but also large-scale maintenance, turning into repairs. In the engine, it all started with the replacement of valve seals, as well as hydraulic lifters. But in the process of replacing the caps, it turned out that a piece of the lower chain guide was broken off, and the chain itself was stretched almost to a link. I had to change the timing chain along with all dampers and tensioners. But in the gearbox, they limited themselves to replacing all bearings and seals.

The body, which was in a sad state, was completely disassembled, sandblasted and restored. In particular, the threshold amplifiers had to be replaced, as well as work on the glasses: after sandblasting, corrosion was revealed in their upper part. The glasses were made anew and successfully welded on the control points. After restoration, the body was covered with acid, epoxy and acrylic primer. All joints and seams are smeared with seam sealant, and anticorrosive is also made. Along the way, new attachment points for the front seats were made. The disassembled interior was also protected from corrosion, and then vibration and sound insulation of the floor, trunk, ceiling, doors, hood and front panel were performed. The body was painted dark lilac and covered with Roberlo Elite HS lacquer.

The suspension, as expected, required a large-scale revision: all silent blocks, springs, shock absorbers and CV joints were replaced. The springs are from H&R, the wheel bearings are from Timken. After another inspection of the bottom, we decided to change the fuel and brake lines along with fasteners.

After restoring the “zakolhozhennaya” wiring to a near-standard state, new restyled headlights were purchased and installed, as well as a radiator grille and original mudguards. The cabin has a wooden steering wheel and illuminated sun visors found in excellent condition. Appearance was complemented by non-standard, but original Ford Ronal Centra R17 wheels. The audio system, assembled with the help of Audison component acoustics, has become a traditional refinement today.
