Koreans are in demand and, on the B0 platform, old and new models, Skoda Rapid, sedan. But the Ford Fiesta, which returned to the Russian market, as they say, “has not taken off yet”, and remains outside the Top 25 in terms of sales. Our 2016 Ford Fiesta test is an attempt to find out the hidden potential of an ambitious new market.

Since its introduction in the 1970s, the Ford Fiesta has always been popular with Europeans - an affordable compact hatchback perfectly suited their needs.

In Russia, the fate of the model was more complicated - for a long time, imported Fiestas could hardly withstand competition both with classmates and with the Focus of the Russian assembly - not the most attractive price affected. In the end, low demand forced the automaker to completely remove the model from our market. Fortunately, not for long.

The restyled Ford Fiesta can be recognized by the large grille, as in the Focus and Mondeo.

Ford worked on the bugs by setting up the production of the Fiesta in Naberezhnye Chelny. In addition to the hatchback, a sedan appeared, and most importantly, a price tag adequate to the status of the model. For the minimum configuration, Ambiente is asked for 629 thousand rubles, the maximum Titanium with options with a small margin fits into a million. We had just such a car on the test - an all inclusive hatchback with the most powerful 120-horsepower engine and a Powershift robot.

Ford know-how: the white color of the car is not basic, but is available only for an extra charge of 8,000 rubles.

OUTSIDE AND INSIDE

In appearance, the Fiesta hatchback of the Russian assembly cannot be distinguished from the European one - after restyling, both received a massive chrome grille, stylistically borrowed from Aston Martin and familiar from other Ford models. Perhaps, the design of the car looks more interesting than the same Solaris, especially with 15-inch alloy wheels.

There are no 3-door hatchbacks, as well as a charged version of ST, in the Russian price list. But there is a sedan, inaccessible to Europeans.

When you get into the salon, you immediately understand that they have worked on it in good faith - the seat is comfortable, with a wide range of adjustments and developed lateral support, the controls are in place, the steering wheel is sheathed in leather and correctly profiled. The creators did not stint on materials either - the front panel is soft and pleasant to the touch.

Only the multimedia system raises questions - when its architecture was created in the mid-2000s, the priority was clearly given to design, rather than usability. It will take a long time to figure out the logic of the location of many buttons - do not even try to feel for something on the go! In addition, the audio system unit, made in the style of the Nokia 5510 mobile phone, looks outdated in 2016. The 4.2-inch central display, pushed deep into the panel, feels too small - competitors' multimedia systems in expensive trim levels look more relevant.

BACK ROW AND TRUNK

The back row in Fiesta is made according to the residual principle - after all, the model was developed as a European compact, and not as a car for all occasions for developing countries. The wheelbase here is 8 cm less than that of Solaris and 3 cm superior to the VAZ "nine". Therefore, passengers above 180 cm will be cramped in length, and in a sedan with a more sloping roof, the head will also rest against the ceiling. In addition, not very convenient landing and disembarkation - the opening is narrow. In general, in many other “state employees” it is more spacious to sit in the back. This is a kind of payment for compactness - the Ford Fiesta 2016, which is shorter than the Koreans, is easier to park.

The rear seats here are not the most spacious, tall passengers will have to make room.

DYNAMICS AND CONTROL

Fiesta engine - 1.6 - liter 16-valve gasoline with a variable valve timing system has three power options. 85 hp version only available in the cheapest trim available to claim the lowest starting price. Most cars of the model will get 105-horsepower engines, and a 120-horsepower power unit. can only be ordered in the most expensive Titanium version with a 6-speed Powershift robot.

Feel the difference between 105 and 120 hp engines on the go. quite difficult - except that at maximum acceleration on a more modest version, the rev limiter is activated earlier. The PowerShift box with two clutches is tuned for a dynamic ride and clicks gears very quickly - to the envy of hydromechanical machines. Among the "state employees", only and can boast of transmissions of this type. True, in terms of reliability, Russian buyers trust them less than traditional automatic transmissions. The automaker took this into account, so he made a number of improvements to the Powershift design - in the clutch unit, oil seals, transmission control module, and backed them up with a 3-year warranty. Whether Ford can overcome its distrust of dual-clutch transmissions remains to be seen.

All Russian Fiestas are equipped with a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated Duratec engine. In Europe, it was replaced with a supercharged 1L EcoBoost engine.

Ford Fiesta has always been famous for its excellent handling. Fortunately, Russian-made cars are no exception - even despite the increased ground clearance as a result of adaptation to our conditions. The car obeys the steering wheel perfectly, and the drive is limited only by not the best grip properties of standard Kama Euro tires. The latter are clearly the fruit of a compromise - we assume that they got on the conveyor due to their low cost. But, thanks to the high profile, the smoothness of the ride is better than it would be on the “skating rinks”, and on a bad road you don’t have to worry about the safety of the discs. Kama Euro tires do not like rain, they did us a disservice on the Moscow pavement flooded with water. After the incident, which we will tell about separately, we would advise everyone not to save on tires.

In terms of taxiing, the Fiesta will give odds not only to the Korean pair of Solaris and Rio, but also, perhaps, to the budget models of the VAG concern.

With many similarities to budget models from other brands, Ford from Naberezhnye Chelny turned out to be a completely different car, as our 2016 Ford Fiesta test found out. Contrary to the practicality that competitors pride themselves on, it is defiantly emotional and fresh. Yes, it is less spacious and versatile, but it parks well. Pragmatic fathers of families and taxi drivers, having measured with a tape measure and calculated on a calculator, will probably make their choice. The style and drive of the Fiesta will be more to the liking of the students, making it difficult for them to choose a used BMW. Ford Fiesta can also claim the hearts of moderately wealthy, but rather conservative representatives of working youth. Oh, we completely forgot about the many loved ones who live next to us. The version of the new Fiesta Active is an off-road version, which has an overlay made of unpainted plastic along the entire bottom of the car, a modified false radiator grille with fine-mesh filling and pronounced roof rails. In addition, the car has a higher ground clearance, which makes it visually similar to a crossover.

Vignale, on the other hand, will be more difficult to distinguish externally, since all the differences are mostly concentrated on the interior, but externally the car also received some changes, among them: a unique filling of the radiator grille in the form of sea waves, chrome fog lamp surrounds and 18-inch wheels on low-profile rubber .

Inside, the car looks stylish and modern, compared to previous generations, the model does not seem to be a budget one. In front of the driver is a massive 3-spoke steering wheel with a large set of keys on the side spokes, and behind it you can see a bright dashboard. She received two large analog speedometer and tachometer rings, between which a color display of the on-board computer is integrated. Below the display are two more semicircular sensors: a fuel sensor and a temperature sensor.


The torpedo is made in the style of modern cars: in the upper part, the display of the Ford Fiesta 2018-2019 multimedia system “sticks out” of it, which can have dimensions from 6.5 to 8 inches. Just below the display is a strip of audio control buttons. Air ducts are located below, and at the very bottom of the torpedo are two mechanical "twists" of the climate system with indications and several buttons. Heated and ventilated seats were moved to the central tunnel.


The seats received pronounced lateral support and optimal rigidity. There is also a supply of free space, both in front of the legs and above the head. In the sedan, the trunk volume is 455 liters. The hatchback can please only 295 liters, but with the second row folded down, the volume will be 979 liters.

Of greater interest is the turbocharged engines of the EcoBoost series, with a working volume of 1 liter and can be “pumped” for 100, 125 and 140 horsepower. The weakest engine takes 12.4 seconds to accelerate to 100 km / h, developing a maximum speed of 170 km / h. The most powerful performance can accelerate to 100 km / h in 9.4 seconds. The maximum speed with this power plant is 200 km / h.

The average fuel consumption of all engines in the combined cycle is in the range of 5-6 liters.

There is also a diesel version of the engines of the new Fiesta. They are represented by turbocharged "fours" with a volume of 1.5 liters, which develop 85, 120 horsepower and 215, 270 Nm of torque, respectively. The 85-horsepower unit is capable of accelerating to 170 km / h, overcoming the first “hundred” in 12.6 seconds. The "senior" colleague will repeat this procedure in 9.4 seconds, and the maximum speed is 190 km / h.


The average fuel consumption of diesel engines in the combined cycle is 4.3 liters.

The motors can be paired with both a 6-speed manual transmission and a 6-speed automatic transmission. The drive is traditionally front.

The ST version can really please, which is equipped with a 1.5-liter gasoline turbo engine capable of developing 200 hp. and 290 Nm of torque, which allows the model to accelerate to 100 km/h in 6.7 km/h. Top speed is limited to 225 km/h.

Chassis


Both standard modifications and the most “charged” have a typical suspension system design for cars of this class, represented by front struts with an anti-roll bar and a semi-independent torsion beam with an anti-roll bar at the rear of the Ford Fiesta 2018-2019.

However, the “lighter” has different settings and lower ground clearance, which significantly reduces roll in corners, but negatively affects comfort. In general, the suspension is very “furious”, it works out hard even barely noticeable bumps on the road. There are also advantages to the suspension, for example, the noise coming from the chassis when driving off-road is now completely gone.


The brake system is represented by disc brake discs with ventilation at the front and drum mechanisms at the rear. Together with powerful motors, "drums" are replaced by "disks". Also, the brakes are equipped with an ABS system and an emergency braking system that operates at a distance of up to 130 meters.

The official dealer in Russia presents a limited list of configurations:

Design

The sixth Fiesta is the case when the appearance of the car causes only positive emotions, and the internal "stuffing" - questions, which is primarily due to its compact dimensions. Already looking at the photo of the novelty with the naked eye, you immediately understand that the space in its trunk is limited (295 liters), and there is a clear lack of free space in the cabin, especially on the second row of seats. The appearance of the hatch is really pleasant, and there are no big questions about it. The front part of the body is very recognizable due to the predatory look of narrow headlights, round fog optics and a trapezoidal radiator grille with a chrome frame. "Stern" is quite nice, but still "an amateur."


At the rear of the car, red and white lights are observed, a trunk lid of modest size and a horizontal plastic protective overlay. The expressive side lines of the body emphasize the sporty and dynamic character of the car. It is quite obvious that the Fiesta 2016, which received a “registration” in the Russian Federation, is still a European model, and in order to become “its own” in Russia, it lacks impressiveness, practicality and, unfortunately, even good visibility, as evidenced by the small side mirrors, which quickly become dirty. It remains to be hoped that over time the manufacturer will correct these shortcomings.

Design

The five-door manufactured in Naberezhnye Chelny shares the B2E chassis with the EcoSport “SUV” - its assembly has been established at the same enterprise. Comfort

The hatchback salon, alas, cannot boast of spaciousness - there is practically no free space on the second row of seats, the legs of the rear passengers completely rest against the backs of the front seats, and the first row is cramped and there is little space above your head. Due to the small opening angle of the doors, it will be difficult for a large person to get into the rear of the cabin, which is more intended for children than for adults. When you sit in a comfortable driver's seat Fiesta 2016 with light lateral support and mechanical adjustment, you involuntarily recall the cockpits of sports cars: all thanks to the low seating position and high front panel, made, by the way, of soft pliable plastic.


The plastic on the dashboard is pleasant to the touch, which cannot be said about the cheap plastic and leather sheathing of the 3-spoke steering wheel. In general, the Fiesta interior is decorated more or less qualitatively and has excellent sound insulation. Above it is a slot for loading CDs, even higher is a recess with a small screen, and below it is a beautifully designed climate control unit. On the sides - ventilation deflectors. Dashboard - two “wells” of a speedometer and a tachometer with traditional American turquoise backlighting.
