Ford Bronco: hero of his time

In the 1960s, two off-road vehicles dominated North America - the descendant of the legendary "Willis" Jeep CJ5 and its rival Scout, manufactured by the now defunct International Harvester company. The success of this couple haunted Ford, in particular, product manager Donald Nelson Fry. who, by the way, had a hand in the release of the Mustang model. So in 1966, the Bronco SUV was born - Ford's first compact SUV.

1ST GENERATION (1966–1977)

The car, reaching a length of 3848 mm, was accepted by the public with a bang. During the first year, the manufacturer sold 23,776 copies. The most popular versions of the Bronco were the 3-door wagon and 2-door pickup. But the open-top modification turned out to be an outsider. At first, the SUV was equipped with an in-line 2.8-liter gasoline “six”. Then the engine range was expanded with two V8 engines of 4.7 and 4.9 liters. In 1973, the 2.8-liter unit was replaced by another 3.3-liter inline-six and an automatic transmission was added as an option.

Despite the update, the popularity of the car fell. Larger competitors such as the Chevrolet Blazer, International Scout II, and Jeep Cherokee (SJ) were slowly driving the small Bronco out of the market.

2ND GENERATION (1978–1979)

In 1978, Ford begins production of the second generation Bronco. The new car has become noticeably larger than its predecessor, stepping into the full-size category (the wheelbase has increased from 2337 mm to 2642 mm), and it is based on a shortened platform from the Ford F-Series pickup truck. Pickup and convertible modifications have sunk into the past with the departure of the first Bronco. From that moment on, the SUV began to be produced exclusively in a 3-door station wagon version. The engine range of the model consisted of two petrol "eights" with a volume of 5.75 and 6.6 liters. Gearboxes - 4-speed "mechanics" and 3-speed automatic. Beginning in 1979, Ford began equipping the Bronco with a catalytic converter and other emissions control equipment.

3RD GENERATION (1980–1986)

In 1980, the Ford plant in Michigan begins production of the third generation Bronco. In fact, the car is a deeply modernized version of its predecessor. The SUV has changed its appearance: it was unified with the F-Series pickup truck, which, by the way, also changed generations in the same year. Looking ahead a little, we note that in 1982 the manufacturer abandoned the use of FORD letters as a logo in favor of the “blue oval”, familiar to us to this day.

As for the technical part, the third generation Bronco got an independent Dana 44 Twin Traction Beam (TTB) front suspension with springs that replaced the leaf springs. The gasoline in-line "six" has returned to the engine range of the SUV. This is a 4.9-liter engine offered as a base engine. In addition, the SUV could be ordered with two V8s of 4.95 and 5.75 liters. Since 1985, the 4.95-liter engine has been equipped with an injector. At the same time, the 3-speed automatic was replaced by a 4-speed one.

FORD BRONCO II (1983–1990)

The unfolding race for fuel economy prompted Ford to release in 1983 a more compact and economical version of the Bronco SUV - the Bronco II. It was based on a shortened chassis from the Ranger pickup, and the length was only 4021 mm. Note that the standard "Bronco" was built on a modified "trolley" from the F-Series pickup truck and reached a length of 4582 mm.

Four-wheel drive for the Bronco II was only available at an additional cost. In the basic version, the car had a rear drive axle. At first, the SUV was equipped with a German-made 2.8-liter carburetor "six" Cologne ("Cologne") with a capacity of 115 forces. In 1986, this unit was replaced by a 2.9-liter 140-horsepower V6 from the same series. However, due to miscalculations in the design, the motor was prone to overheating, which led to the formation of cracks in the cylinder head.

Despite a slight improvement in the quality of cylinder head production in 1989, the problem was never solved. By the way, in addition to the unreliable petrol “six”, since 1987 the car could be ordered with a diesel 2.3-liter turbo four from Mitsubishi with a return of 96 forces. But due to its low power, this unit was not popular.

Unfortunately, low-quality cylinder heads were far from the main drawback of the Bronco II. Even at the design stage in 1981, problems with the stability of the car in corners were noted during tests. The SUV had a high center of gravity, a narrow track and design flaws in the suspension. The engineers proposed a number of changes to avoid rollover, but the company management rejected them: the upgrade would have delayed the release of the car. In addition, according to unofficial data, Ford's top managers decided that a team of lawyers to resolve future disputes would be cheaper.

As a result, only in 1987, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) officially registered 43 deaths as a result of an SUV rollover. It is not possible to calculate the exact number of deaths and injuries as a result of a rollover of a car. Reports from Ford, NHTSA, and other government and private organizations vary greatly. Some report that on average about 70 people died every year, according to others, this figure reached 200 per year. Nevertheless, they agree on one thing: many rollovers were the fault of the drivers themselves, who exceeded the speed limit or were in a state of intoxication. All the more surprising is the case of the famous American jockey Bill Shoemaker. In April 1991, while drunk driving, he overturned his Bronco II. As a result of his injuries, Shoemaker was paralyzed from neck to toe, but after a lawsuit, Ford paid him a million dollars in compensation. In 2001, Time magazine estimated that all of the Bronco II coup lawsuits cost the manufacturer about $2.4 billion.

In 1990, the Explorer came to replace the Bronco II compact SUV. Unlike its predecessor, the new model stepped into the full-size SUV category, and all the mistakes of the past were taken into account in its design. The Explorer is an instant best-seller and was named Four Wheeler of the Year twice in 1990 and 1991. But that is another story…

4TH GENERATION (1987–1991)

Back to the standard Bronco, which in 1987 is going through a very serious change. Firstly, the fourth generation of the SUV was rewarded with a new look, a new interior and a new platform, which, as before, was borrowed from the F-Series pickup truck. And secondly, from that moment on, the car ceases to have the status of made in USA. Ford completely transfers its production to Venezuela.

Like its predecessors, the fourth generation Bronco was only available in a 3-door version. The engine range is the same as that of the previous model, but with one exception: all engines are equipped with an injection fuel supply system. Among them are a 4.9-liter in-line petrol "six" and two V8s with a volume of 4.95 and 5.75 liters. Gearboxes - manual 5-speed, available as an option, and automatic with 3 or 4 steps. In 1990, as part of the 1991 model year, Ford released a special version of the Bronco 25th Silver Anniversary Edition. It differed in body color and interior color palette.

5TH GENERATION (1992–1996)

When creating the fifth generation Bronco, Ford engineers paid special attention to safety. A new body with deformation zones was designed, rear seat belts were installed, a third brake light was integrated, and since 1994 the car was equipped with a driver's airbag. In addition, officially the rear of the body was no longer considered removable, but if desired and with the necessary tools, this was still feasible.

The chassis and engine range remained the same. True, the 6-cylinder engine was removed from the latter in 1992, and the remaining ones began to be equipped with a mass air flow sensor. Transmissions - two 4-speed automatic and 5-speed "mechanics".

The popularity of the Bronco gradually declined. The manufacturer tried to regain demand by offering customers special versions, different interior options, or features such as duplicate turn indicators built into the side mirrors and a dimming rear-view mirror. But it didn't help. In 1996, 30 years after the very first Bronco went on sale, the car was discontinued. It was replaced in 1997 by the Expedition model. A large, comfortable 5-door SUV, like the Bronco once, became what the American consumer needed in its time.

CONCEPTS AND PLANS

In recent years, Ford has repeatedly hinted at the revival of the SUV. In 2004, the Bronco Concept was presented to the public. The car was equipped with a 2-liter turbodiesel, 6-speed "mechanics" and an intelligent all-wheel drive system. However, the project did not receive the green light. Only 13 years later, at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2017, the company's management announced that they would revive the car. Mark Fields, chief executive of Ford Motor Company, even noted that production copies will go to dealers as early as 2020. There are no official technical details yet, but, according to some reports, the SUV will be built on a frame structure. Be that as it may, it will soon be clear in what way one of the iconic cars of the 20th century will be revived.

The American concern Ford keeps in its collection a large SUV - Ford Bronco 2019 2020. The Bronco model is over 30 years old. An overview of the Ford Bronco, as well as reviews from the owners of 1990 and 2000, is given below. Addresses have also been published where to buy in Russia and from which dealers the Bronco SUV.

Ford Bronco 2019 is a rather poorly known car in our open spaces. However, it is really significant not only for the American corporation itself, but for the entire automotive world. In fact, he stood at the origins of such a segment as SUVs and was able to hold out on the assembly line for more than 30 years, taking advantage of stable demand and delighting his customers with excellent performance.

The beginning of the story itself can be considered the year 1966, when the start of sales of the model was announced. Initially, the Ford Bronco could be bought in three different body styles - a standard station wagon, semi-cab or roadster. The latter was withdrawn from sale in 1968 due to extremely low demand. Ironically, at first this version was not particularly honored by buyers, but now they are ready to give a lot of money for it.

The model relied on a standard 6-cylinder V-engine with a volume of 2.8 liters and a power of 107 hp. But in the course of production, more solid engines were added to it, with a volume of 3.3 and 4.7 liters, and a 4.9-liter gasoline unit settled at the top.

Everything went quite well - the car had good geometric cross-country ability and was in good demand. So it would be further, if not for one but. The fuel crisis of the 70s forced consumers to look for cars with low fuel consumption. And this model consumed a lot of gasoline. Therefore, many customers abandoned the idea of buying a ford bronco. The car stayed on the assembly line for a couple more years, until it was withdrawn from sale in 1977.

After the fuel crisis

However, the oblivion was short-lived. As soon as the crisis passed and the situation calmed down a bit, the Americans again wanted a real SUV. Solid, powerful, passable. The management listened to the wishes of customers, and by 1978 the world saw the Ford Bronco 2.

Also look at and .

The car received a new body, added in size. The angular silhouette looked impressive and brutal. Yes, and the motors were a match for such a giant. Under the hood of the car, primordially American V8s were registered, with a volume of 5.75 or 6.6 liters, combined with either a 4-speed manual or a 3-band automatic.

Constant update

And two years later, in 1980, the start of sales of the heir to the ford bronco ii was announced. In fact, the car is the result of a global restyling, but certain fundamental changes make it possible to consider it a new generation.

Unlike the 1979 model, the new Ford Bronco was produced with a 6.6-liter engine. Now the familiar 210-horsepower 5.75-liter unit has become the top one, and the engine with a volume of 4.9 liters and a power of 150 hp was considered the base for the model.

By 1982, the Ford Bronco experienced another restyling, as a result of which the car received a different radiator grille, as well as a new modification called the SUV Bronco (see photo). The differences were in a more compact size and the original design of the chassis.

Overtaken by progress

The fourth generation debuted in 1988. In fact, it was a converted third generation, however, which received a more modern exterior and interior. The car received a new body, the interior was fully consistent with the spirit of the times.

The new seats became more comfortable, and by 1989 the car was equipped with a steering wheel adjustment for reach. I must say that the leadership in the course of release upgraded the Ford Bronco, listening to consumer feedback. So, in 1990, it was decided to abandon the archaic 3-range gearbox.

Now the models were equipped exclusively with a 4-band automatic or 5-speed manual. In terms of the technical characteristics of the engines, practically nothing has changed - the fourth generation rather had cosmetic changes.

Fifth and last?

And by 1992, the last generation of the Ford Bronco 2019 was presented. It is also interesting that this is the only generation that could officially be bought in Russia. The car retained family features, but the designers now boasted improved aerodynamics, which reduced fuel consumption per 100 kilometers.

The interior has also been modernized to meet today's needs. The car in the basic configuration received a power steering, a tow bar, cruise control and alloy wheels, which brought it out of the category of utilitarian household cars (see video test drive).

The motors have also been tuned to improve their performance. So, the base 5-liter unit was able to produce about 185 hp. at 366 N / m of torque. And the top-end equipment with a 5.8-liter engine had a power of 200 hp. and 407th n / m thrust.

Whatever you say, the iron curtain effect is still working. A dozen models of cars from the time of developed socialism can cause us a nostalgic tear, while we do not notice the thousands of beautiful cars that were built outside the USSR. They are not worse, they are much better than Soviet models of equipment. And given the fact that most Soviet legends are nothing more than copies of imported ones, and not always the best ones, pride is quickly replaced by annoyance and a desire to drink. On the example of the Ford Bronco, the famous US SUV, we will try to trace the fate of half-forgotten, but important models for world history.

SUVs: whose Bobik is better

In that huge country in which we lived, they were proud of off-road vehicles. In the entire history of the automobile industry of the Union, they were built, brought to mind and put on the conveyor about five. Niva, UAZ, LuAZ, what else is there? GAZ 69, GAZ 64 ... And apart from single experimental models, this is all that you can be proud of. Neither before nor after them were adequate all-terrain vehicles produced on a large scale.

The first Bronco edited by modern tuners. Very decent job

In this regard, the leadership of the United States is difficult to challenge. They furiously invent and produce more and more new models of SUVs and frame pickups, and it seems that there will be no end to this. And it's good that it won't. Jeepers around the world respectfully treat Japanese SUVs, but the right of the first vote always remains with the States, the automobile power, you can’t argue with that. And so, long before the Ford F-150 Raptor was even born, the Ford Bronco was something similar for its time.

Ford Bronco, pages of history

Ford Bronco was conceived as an alternative to the reigning Jeep XJ and International Harvester Scout. What came out of this can be judged by the materials that we have collected. Here are some interesting facts, confirmed by photographs, about the fate of the legendary Bronco.

This is what the Ford Bronco should look like by 2020.

Over the years, the Bronco has grown and evolved from a simple two-door all-wheel drive SUV. Pictured below is a 1966 model. Later, it would develop into a full-size off-road luxury liner, and in 1996 it would give way to more progressive models. But this is not the end. For 2020, Ford promises a high-profile premiere of the Bronco in a new format. The attention of the American press and off-road lovers is riveted to this project for a reason. He is expected, and here's why.

Ford Bronco debuted in 1965, in August. The model was offered in several versions at once. The designers and engineers turned out to be a practical SUV in every sense, it was distinguished by a simple design, this car did not have any options that the modern motorist appreciates so much. However, despite this, the model was easily able to adapt to a wide variety of driving styles and modes of operation. Three types of bodies were available: station wagon, semi-cab and roadster, which was soon discontinued due to low demand.

The first versions of the Ford Bronco were equipped with 6-cylinder petrol units with a capacity of 107 horses, as well as a three-speed manual transmission. The automatic transmission, beloved by many today, was not even provided then as an option.

In 1966, more than 18,000 people bought this car.

In the following years, engineers worked to modernize the SUV. In the 70th year, the Sport Pakage began to gradually turn into an SUV. In the 71st year, more than 18,000 copies were produced.

At the same time, the American automobile market was not idle, and competitors began to appear at the Ford Bronco. In order not to lose face, the engineers were again forced to modernize.

The 73rd year gave this SUV an automatic transmission and power steering. Specialists also got to the engine - after some modification, it was possible to increase the volume of the base unit to 3.3 liters. This was not in vain - the level of sales has grown very much.

fatal role

But in the mid-1970s in America, as luck would have it, there was an energy crisis that became fatal in the history of this model. In the 77th year, they decided to curtail production. Models produced from 66 to 77 have become classics and are highly valued by amateurs.

Almost a truck

In the 78th year they released a large Ford Bronco. You can see a photo of him below. Its body was very reminiscent of an F-150 pickup truck. The large model was produced until the 96th year.

So, a three-door full-size station wagon, designed for 6 passengers, equipped with a removable plastic roof, which was produced in the 80th year, was nothing more than a real all-wheel drive pickup truck.

Its design was extremely simple, but at the same time it was highly durable. In his appearance, one could guess the features of a truck. He was distinguished by high cross-country ability, which became the basis of his popularity.

They also bought a pickup truck because of various comfort elements. So, the equipment was already richer. Now the kit included a hydraulic booster, an adjustable steering column, a simple cruise control. In addition, more powerful engines and new automatic transmissions were added. The new Ford Bronco, whose performance has improved significantly, began to sell even better. Its fuel consumption with new units was 20 l / 100 km.

Engines and transmission

In the line of power units, the base 6-cylinder gasoline engine with a displacement of 4.9 liters was offered, in addition, a V8 gasoline engine with the same volume and a power of 150 horses was offered. It was equipped with an injection.

Then a 210 hp carburetor unit was offered. With. Its volume was 5.8 liters, a pickup truck with this engine consumed 25 l / 100 km. But those who buy Ford Bronco write reviews not about high consumption, but about high cross-country ability everywhere and everywhere.

As a gearbox, depending on the configuration, 4 or 5-speed manual boxes were used.

Bronco 2.0

In January 1983, motorists were shown a compact sports utility copy of the second version.

The front part stands out with a strong and powerful protective grille.

Also, an aerodynamic visor is installed above the front of the hood cut. The lighting technology impresses with its quality. However, looking at the car, it is immediately difficult to understand what the designers and engineers wanted to say.

Interior

Free space in the cabin was, of course, a little less than that of the older brother. However, the designers did a great job on the interior - now it has become more solid. Perfectly picked up the colors - in the interior there is an abundance of beige and gray shades. The chairs are upholstered in leather. Front seats are adjustable longitudinally and tilt. The range of adjustments is large enough, so even tall people will be comfortable. A special electric drive will help to install a backwater in the belt area. These chairs are very comfortable to sit on. But to go - no. You have to pay for the spectacular external forms of upholstery. Support from the sides does not help, it is not. The driver just rolls down when driving. But for the passenger in front and the driver, armrests were installed, and between them you can find a convenient container for all sorts of things.

Filling

The second Ford Bronco features a frame chassis, independent spring suspension in front and leaf springs in the rear. The front axle can now be disabled. Among the available engines, the manufacturer offered a carbureted 2.8-liter unit or a V6 equipped with a distributed injection system with a volume of 2.9 liters and 140 horsepower. In terms of consumption, these motors were not much better than the more voluminous models. So, the average consumption was 19 l / 100 km.

In addition to a large range of petrol engines, a turbodiesel was also available.

It did not differ in special power, but its fuel consumption was only 15 liters. By the way, the diesel power is 86 horsepower.

Speaking of transmissions, either a 5-speed manual or an automatic transmission for 4 ranges worked in tandem with the power units. You can also find copies with rear-wheel drive for sale.

Ford Bronco: owner reviews

The owners say that the model in the nineties was considered the undisputed leader among those who bought used cars in our country.

Future owners were attracted by comfort, cruise control, engines and automatic transmissions.

But here's the expense - this is what many do not like. Whatever the driving mode, the level of appetite never drops below 20 liters per hundred kilometers. But the front suspension is almost immortal, which is quite good for our roads.

End

In the 90th year, the production of the car ceased due to the production of Explorer station wagons.

And in the 92nd was reystayling. So, we expanded the list of available Ford Bronco trim levels, improved the technical characteristics to a large extent, and added new units. Now, instead of a 120-horsepower engine, they offered an injection engine with 205 horsepower. In the 93rd year, the model began to be equipped with a 5.8-liter 208-horsepower unit. And in the 94th year, airbags appeared in the basic configuration of the car.

rebirth

Recently, representatives of the Ford company announced the possibility of releasing an updated Bronco SUV. Its appearance should be the same as in the first versions. In the concept, despite the appearance, there are many modern and technological solutions - this will be appreciated by modern motorists.

So, we found out what the American Ford Bronco SUV has technical specifications, design and reviews.

The debut of the Bronco took place in August 1965. The car was offered in wagon, semi-cab and roadster versions (the latter was not popular and was discontinued in 1968). It was a practical vehicle, rather simple, without any frills, but at the same time highly adaptable to various kinds of activities. Bronco was equipped with a 107-horsepower 6-cylinder engine with a three-speed manual transmission. The machine was not even in the options. In 1966, 18,200 cars were sold.

In subsequent years, the model was improved. In 1970, the Sport package became standard. In 1971, 18,700 cars rolled off the assembly line.

At this time, worthy competitors appear in the automotive market for Bronco, and in order to stay afloat, the car is subjected to modernization.

In 1973, an automatic transmission and power steering appeared, and the base engine grew to 3.3 liters. The efforts of Ford specialists were not in vain, as evidenced by the increase in sales to 26,300 copies.

The energy crisis of the mid-70s played a fatal role in the history of Bronco. In 1977, the production of the first Bronco was discontinued, now cars from 1966-1977 are considered classics.

In 1978, the big Bronco appeared, strongly resembling the F-150 pickup truck, which was produced until 1996. The full-size (4510x1960x1860 mm) three-door six-seater Bronco station wagon of 1980 with a removable plastic roof was essentially an all-wheel drive pickup truck with a shortened base. In its relatively simple and durable design, belonging to trucks was guessed. The cross-country ability turned out to be quite high, so the model remained popular for a long time. Customers were also drawn to comfort features such as power steering, tilt-adjustable steering column and cruise control, not to mention the powerful and torquey V8 engines paired with three- and four-speed Automatic Orerdrive and Cruise-0-Matic automatic transmissions. . Fuel consumption is about 20 liters per 100 km.

The interior of the Bronco is typical of large American cars - vast, but not without a share of comfort, which is created by soft, seats. The interior is finished with high-quality materials, and the anatomical seats are equipped with tilt and height adjustment. A huge overhanging instrument panel, a large "glove compartment", niches in the panel and console. Even in the cheapest versions, heating by removing heat from the engine is very effective.

The line of power units included: the base carbureted 6-cylinder 4.9-liter engine; V8 - injection 150-horsepower 4.9-liter and carbureted 210-horsepower 5.8-liter (with the latter, fuel consumption reached 25 l / 100 km).

The car was offered in trim levels: S, XL or XLT. Depending on the configuration, it was equipped with 4- or 5-speed manual gearboxes.

In 1982, the radiator lining was changed - it became completely chrome-plated.

In January 1983, the compact SUV Bronco II debuted. Its salon, of course, is smaller than that of the “older” Bronco, but the interior was made in the same style. Chassis design frame, suspension front independent spring, rear spring. Switchable front axle. The main engines for the Bronco II are a carbureted 2.8-liter and fuel-injected 2.9-liter V6 with a capacity of 140 hp. - in terms of fuel consumption, they were slightly inferior to larger power units (up to 19 l / 100 km). In addition, a 2.3-liter turbodiesel with a capacity of 86 hp was installed on the Bronco II, with which fuel consumption did not exceed 15 l / 100 km. The gearbox was a 5-speed manual, as well as a 4-band Automatic Overdrive. There are also options with a drive only on the rear axle.

In 1988, the front end of the Bronco II was updated, but already in 1990 the Bronco II models were replaced by the more practical Ford Explorer five-door station wagons.

Returning to Bronco, we note that in 1984, more serious changes occurred in optics. In 1992, a restyling was carried out. The list of complete sets has expanded. There was a new 205-horsepower 4.9-liter injection V8 engine instead of 120-horsepower.

At the end of 1993, a new 5.8-liter power unit with 208 hp began to be installed on the Bronco. In 1994, airbags became standard equipment.

And now, after a long break, the life of Bronco seems to be starting again.

The Concept Bronco, unveiled in Detroit, is Ford's vision and vision to be reminiscent of early car models: square in appearance, high and flat roof, rounded headlights and a nameplate integrated into the modern grille. Despite the bright underlining of its past heritage, the concept car has many new interesting solutions: conventional headlights have given way to LED and halogen light sources, 18-inch wheels with beautiful 6-spoke aluminum wheels and a roof divided into two parts. The ascetic appearance of the new model should serve as its individualization in the numerous SUV market.

The interior is done in a monotone color scheme: warm gray tones and the inclusion of aluminum inserts in the instrument panel give the car a modern look. The front passenger seats are upholstered in suede with leather inclusions of the same color.

Under the conservative shell of the concept lies a modern transmission, a two-liter turbodiesel with an intercooler (common rail Duratorq TDCi from the European range of the company), a six-speed PowerShift gearbox and an all-wheel drive system with the brand name Intelligent. The PowerShift dual clutch transmission is capable of transmitting up to 450 Nm, which opens up a wide scope for tuning enthusiasts. The engine has a power of 130 hp. and 330 Nm at 1800 rpm. Such indicators are equally well suited for both off-road and for moving around the city. At the same time, the engine has two interesting additions. First, overboost is a short-term increase in boost pressure, which increases torque to 350 Nm. Secondly, a tank with "nitro" (nitric oxide) and the corresponding red button, by pressing and holding which, you can add 50 hp to the engine, and about 20 km / h to the car.

Specifications: Car type - SUV with permanent 4WD drive Length 4078mm. Width 1861mm. Height 1790mm. Wheelbase 2410mm.

Translated from English, "Bronco" means a wild, unbroken horse.
