Volkswagen Tiguan which engine is better. Gasoline or diesel? Unexpected result

30.10.2019

Thanks to cars like the Volkswagen Tiguan, people have become accustomed to the fact that everything new, complex and advanced should require additional investments, as a tribute to the opportunity to experience modern technologies. It is a pity that not all applicants for used cars realize that they are choosing the difficult fate of technocrats.

Maybe that's why people don't line up for used Tiguans like they do for a new iPhone. Because of this, the loss of liquidity from year to year and, accordingly, the inexorable decline in value. In principle, for Volkswagen lovers, the picture is already familiar, as are piston repairs for 40 thousand kilometers, early wear of the chain, turbine, and electrical problems. So let's see if the Tiguan has such a bad reputation to turn its nose up at used options, or just need to understand the engines?

Neither the chain nor the Tiguan gears can be called "eternal". As you can see, some parts are made in China.

Choose your problem

Unlike the platform Skoda Yeti, Volkswagen Tiguan did not see the naturally aspirated 1.6 engine, and the entire line of high-performance turbocharged units was overgrown with delicate, if not intimate, problems. The most expensive "disease" of gasoline engines was the burnout of the pistons and the melting of their partitions. Needless to say, most often 1.4 engines “inflated” up to 150 hp fell on the bulkhead, the very ones that won awards due to their characteristics. After numerous complaints, the mechanical compressor was removed from the unit, leaving 122 hp (CAXA) alone with other typical problems of VW gasoline turbos.

For Tiguan owners, this is already a typical picture. Burnt piston, chipped ring partition

There were quite a few weak points in the entire line, I suspect there would be even more if 1.2 TFSI were installed not only on Yeti, but also on Tiguan. Pumps are flowing with bitter tears over the former German quality, exhaust manifolds are painfully crackling, stretched chains are clicking, turbines are booing the engineers who have laid down such a low resource. Problems with the EGR valve and manifold air pressure are perceived as commonplace. Half of the used Tiguans inspected had malfunctions in the crankcase circulation system.

Factory assembly features. The nut loosened and damaged the impeller. Insert for replacement

Why is 2 liters better?

In the top-end 2.0 engine (CAWA, CAWB), cases of burn-out of “regular” pistons are less common, upgraded parts generally hold up as they should. But on trifles, the motor can burden no less. For example, ignition coils are used to “dying” not one at a time, but 2-3 at once, that is, high-quality fuel and short candle replacement times will help save the budget.

In fact, there are two problems in this photo: 1. The collector will burst 2. The pressure regulator is worn out, the ringing of which became audible at “supercharged” speeds

Large financial investments are not required for elimination even in case of wear of the turbine actuator, which is usually marked by a ringing sound and is accompanied by errors in “underblowing”. Tiguan owners are used to repairing the “non-pumping” high-pressure fuel pump of a 2-liter engine themselves, managing to replace the pusher, after which the pressure in the system returns to normal. When something like this happens on a diesel version, owners usually clutch at their hearts.

Similar deposits in the intake manifold and on the throttle are typical for all cars that have not yet disabled the ERG valve. Periodic cleaning required

On the other hand, the chain does not stretch on diesel fuel cars, since the timing drive is belt-driven and, according to the regulations, changes after 90 tkm. Diesel units, in principle, turned out to be more tenacious, but at the same time less adapted to Russian winters, which is logical in principle. Starting into deep "minuses" usually causes problems.

Intake manifold flap problems are usually fixed on their own.

DSG and Haldex all-wheel drive

Fortunately, the rest of the Volkswagen Tiguan nodes decently smooth out the overall picture of the car and allow you to pull out, as it might seem at first glance, a C grade to a higher rating in the chain of our reviews. For example, the "automatic" 09G, except for the periodic replacement of the rubber support and oil, does not require anything for a long time. There is nothing to say about the manual transmission, there are no questions to it at all. Interestingly, the manufacturer decided to play it safe and, before restyling, did not put his overpriced DSG on the Volkswagen Tiguan at all. It wasn't until 2011 that a 6-speed wet-clutch robot was paired with a 1.4-liter lineup, and rightly so, there were simply no more bad reviews than the DSG-7.

The outboard bearing will last longer if you do not abuse the relief and monitor the presence of lubrication

And, again, it is worth paying tribute to the 7-speed robot, with the proper approach to maintenance and a competent driving style, it is able to withstand 150 thousand kilometers without changing the clutches. It’s a pity that the cat cried such owners. Much more common are those who, on the contrary, use a modest resource of aggregates to the fullest.

The Haldex clutch pump is at risk for those who neglect to change the oil in the assembly and like to anneal with slippage

The same applies not only to the dynamic capabilities of the car, but also to its off-road qualities. As it turned out, many owners, who overestimated the terrain, manage to break through the gearbox pan, protected by a regular “foil”, referred to as protection in order orders of car dealerships. In other matters, forays into the mud for the Tiguan are also contraindicated, as you risk overheating the Haldex all-wheel drive. The clutch already suffers from chronic hydraulic pump failures. Speaking in general terms, then change the oil in the gearboxes on time, do not drive and you will be happy.

A car with a load-bearing body and an electric fluid coupling will be able to pass diagonal hanging, but at your expense

Golf platform

There are almost no weak points in the chassis. Even a stabilizer strut resource of 60-70 thousand km can be considered solid. The front torsion bar bushings live a little longer, but dealer repairs only involve replacing the entire system assembly. In order to save money, you will have to buy gum from Opel and go to a third-party service. Next on the way, as a rule, are wheel bearings and rear silent blocks of the front levers. It is better to immediately change both in pairs, since their resource is approximately the same - 80-100 thousand km. Everything else, including shock absorbers, usually lasts much longer, and it’s not worth planning a major overhaul of the chassis before 150 tkm.

Shock absorbers are extremely tenacious, they can easily pass 150 tkm

In general, everything is fine with the brakes, the main thing is to make sure that the ABS unit has the latest firmware version, otherwise the Tiguan can decently “stretch” forward when braking hard on an uneven section. Steering sometimes requires intervention, but mostly not even because of the tips, but because of electrical failures. For example, oxidized and damaged EUR contacts can be expensive. Just one of the Tiguans we examined required the replacement of the entire assembly. The signal light on the dashboard was off, but the gain itself seemed very suspicious, as it happened with jerks. Of course, computer diagnostics produced a string of errors with system malfunctions.

In this photo, one problem has been eliminated (the lever silent block is already new), and the second, unfortunately, is no longer fixable - the car was badly damaged in an accident

The electric handbrake also sometimes mopes, especially in the cold season, when the driving mechanisms are constrained by moisture. Because of this, the drive motor may be replaced. In frosts, as a rule, crickets wake up, having a completely standard location in the area of \u200b\u200bair duct deflectors and elements of the center console, which is not made of the softest plastic.

An attempt to "eliminate" the crickets in the panel ended in a deflector failure. Plastic is cheap

Tiguan with mileage of 100 thousand km

The appearance of the interior from year to year is not lost as quickly as, for example, in the budget Polo Sedan, however, fabric seats also get dirty easily, and pseudo-leather seats can crack at folds up to 100 thousand km. Although in general, even after 100 thousand km, the Tiguan can look very fresh, which is often used by dishonest sellers who “twist” the mileage. Fortunately, information about the distance traveled is stored in a variety of control units. From my own experience I will say that even these testimonies should not be trusted, it is still better to build on the condition of the car and take into account many indirect signs.

This car has a significantly different mileage in the engine ECU than declared

As already mentioned, after the first "hundred" Tiguan retains its original appearance well, but this is the danger of buying, because a car that is well-groomed at first glance is often technically already "dying". This is especially true for cars with a 1.4 engine. In almost all instances, whichever engine you choose, on a run of 100 thousand km, the turbine is already covered with a “coat” of oil passed into the manifold, and there are also problems with the circulation of crankcase gases. For some reason, the rear silent blocks of levers are always in a shabby form.

Many did not like the standard multimedia system, but third-party head units do not want to be “friends” with the multifunction steering wheel

With other components and systems, with rare exceptions, there are usually no problems, however, almost all specimens inspected before purchase, even very fresh ones, have “repaints” on the body. It is difficult to say what this is connected with, most likely, with dynamic capabilities. One way or another, Tiguan is afraid of corrosion, but not much, the bare metal is only covered with a reddish film without further spread. The only exceptions are the seams under the windshield molding.

Corrosion for Tiguan is a rare thing, but quite real

Choosing a Tiguan

As we can see, a used Volkswagen Tiguan is quite dangerous, especially when it comes to a car with a mileage of over a hundred. Naturally, the “killer” regulations, driving style and fuel quality played a big role in the deterioration of the reputation. Therefore, it is possible to find a properly serviced car, but it is better to refuse versions with a 1.4 engine altogether, at least from 150-horsepower modifications for sure. Among the 2.0-liter units, the least “inflated” would be preferable, and even better, a diesel engine paired with a hydraulic automatic or manual transmission. As is the case with many other "Germans", any used Tiguan requires mandatory computer diagnostics. Albeit with a margin of error, but still it is possible to assess the condition of the circuit, the rest of the “robot” clutches, identify possible malfunctions of the power steering, etc.

The interior of the Tiguan is able to retain its original appearance for a long time. All cars tested before buying had no problems with this.

Reducing everything to a common denominator, we come to the conclusion that with a competent approach to even a used Volkswagen Tiguan should not ask for large investments. The most desirable options are cars that have already been at the dealer's "capital", as the pistons and chain are changed to upgraded reinforced ones. However, all the same, I am haunted by the thought that you and I have come to the time when the repair of SHPGs at low mileage has become the norm for Volkswagen.

VIN Location and Engine Numbers

The main Tiguan VIN number is located on the right "cup" under the "jabot" and access to it opens after removing one clip and removing the plastic cap. Duplicate markings are located under the windshield and on the sticker of the central left pillar. By the way, by the latter you can find out the engine model. But the number of the power unit itself is located inconveniently - in front of the cylinder block at the junction with the gearbox. Access to it is closed by a mass of wiring harnesses and pipes. The data is duplicated on a sticker on the left side of the motor on a plastic casing near the expansion tank, the only thing is that you should not trust this piece of paper 100%.

It will not be difficult to find the VIN number, but you will have to look for the engine marking and, sometimes, you can’t do without partial disassembly

Tiguan competitors

If you nevertheless scrolled through the paragraph “Choosing a Tiguan”, then most likely you were also frightened by the current trends of the VAG concern and, having chosen the platform Skoda Yeti as an alternative, it is unlikely that you will be able to get rid of all of the above, even if you consider that the “Czech” has a slightly different motor line - weak points are almost the same. You can also lay eyes on the "Koreans" Hyundai ix35 and Kia Sportage, but their G4KD engine is reputed to be a little less bad and also protests the piston against active driving. The engines of Japanese competitors are more reliable, but the price of used cars is appropriate. Thus, you can pay attention to Toyota Rav4, Honda CR-V, Suzuki SX4, Mazda CX-5, Nissan Qashqai will also be a good option.

In the Russian automotive market, the line of power units for the Volkswagen Tiguan is presented in five versions. Four of them are gasoline engines, one is diesel. With such a wide choice, it is not surprising that many motorists are interested in which engine is better before buying a mini-crossover.

But, before starting the comparison, it is worth noting: absolutely all Volkswagen Tiguan engines have excellent quality characteristics, but at the same time they are characterized by greater sensitivity to fuel quality. This factor is of particular importance in Russia, where not all gas stations can buy really high-quality fuel.

Important! Even a single refueling with bad gasoline can lead to serious damage to engine systems, in particular this applies to 1.4-liter Volkswagen Tiguan engines.

Petrol engines

The Russian buyer can choose one of four options for gasoline engines. They have a different volume and differ in power characteristics. But the general characteristics are also characteristic of engines:

  • the presence of turbocharging;
  • fuel grade - AI-95;
  • environmental class - Euro-5;
  • the number of cylinders in engines - 4;
  • the number of valves in each cylinder - 4;
  • in-line arrangement of cylinders;
  • unit power system - direct injection into the combustion chamber.

Petrol engine 1.4 l

These compact and fairly economical motors are presented in two power versions: 122 and 155 hp. With. Versions CAXA and CZDB for the 122-horsepower engine, and CZDA for a more powerful version are equipped with a single turbocharger. But there are other engine options, these are CAVA and CAVD, which have a more interesting fuel supply system. Here you can see the turbine and the drive compressor interacting quite favorably with each other.

For engines of 1.4 liters. some non-deliveries are also characteristic, these are - a weak piston group and a lubrication system that works literally at the limit of its capabilities. The intercooler gets dirty pretty quickly due to a rather weak pump, the turbine also cannot boast of sufficient power.

It is for these reasons that Volkswagen Tiguan cars with 1.4 liter engine lines. quite often can be found in the secondary market at an unnaturally low price. But, as already mentioned, in many respects the normal functioning of engine systems depends on the quality of the fuel, oil and coolant used.

A less powerful version of the engine works exclusively with a six-speed gearbox, the maximum engine power is achieved at 5 thousand revolutions per minute. Up to hundreds of kilometers. the car accelerates in just 10.9 s, which is a fairly good indicator for a car with such impressive dimensions.

Important! With 122 hp engines. with., as practice shows, there are fewer problems: they are less prone to destruction or breakdown of the piston group. While more powerful units, starting from 150 horses, have a complex structure and overheat in the warm season, even at average temperatures. The compressor drive clutch together with the pump are consumables that need systematic and extraordinary replacement.

In many ways, the condition of the engine depends on the timely replacement of oils and their high quality. When operating a Volkswagen Tiguan, especially with large engine volumes, drivers must certainly take this factor into account, thereby limiting themselves from costly repairs.

Petrol engine 2.0 l

Two-liter gasoline engines for the Volkswagen Tiguan are presented in two versions:

  • 170 l. With.;
  • 200 l. With.

Naturally, the latter option has the highest level of fuel consumption. This series of engines has a more reliable timing compared to the 1.4 version. Also, Volkswagen Tiguan engines with a volume of 2 liters have excellent traction throughout the entire rev range and ample opportunities for tuning, which can put them an order of magnitude higher in all respects. But there are also typical drawbacks, for example, unsuccessful oil scraper and compression rings. These shortcomings result in:

  • coking of the piston group;
  • increased load on the crankcase ventilation system;
  • permanent throttle contamination.

Diesel unit

For the Russian buyer, only one version of the diesel engine with a volume of 2 liters is available. It is worth noting that they are distinguished by a high level of reliability, if you do not take into account the characteristic shortcomings for absolutely all diesel engines. This is a vulnerable power system, constant contamination of the particulate filter and freezing of fuel at low temperatures.

But on Volkswagen Tiguan engines, nozzles with a piezo function are installed, which have a limited reserve. Because refueling with low-quality fuel can lead to a complete replacement of injectors ok, which will result in no less than 160 thousand rubles. You should not save on the quality of diesel fuel, and a 2.0-liter diesel engine will serve the owner of the Volkswagen Tiguan for many years.

This engine has low fuel consumption, therefore it is a fairly economical option. Maximum engine power is reached at 4200 rpm. Torque - 320 Nm. The turbocharged engine is equipped with an air intercooler system. Acceleration to hundreds of kilometers is carried out in 10.7 s. The maximum speed is 182 km/h. The diesel unit works in conjunction with an automatic six-speed gearbox.

Why choose Volkswagen Tiguan

Statistics show that the European compact SUV is the best in its class today. This is evidenced by the reviews of real owners, critics and sales figures. Tiguan left behind such serious competitors as Toyota Rav-4 and Nissan Qashqai.

Among the main advantages of the Volkswagen Tiguan are:

  • excellent handling;
  • convincing dynamics;
  • economical fuel consumption, especially with 1.4 liter units and a diesel engine;
  • quality assembly;
  • a wide range of motors;
  • reliable paintwork and the presence of plastic thresholds that protect the outer layer of the body from scratches and significant damage;
  • the quality of the chassis and the brake system is at the highest level. Even if wheel bearings and silent blocks are replaced, the cost of repair will not be prohibitive, since these parts are inexpensive. The resource of these consumables is 100-150 thousand kilometers;
  • excellent external characteristics and comfortable interior.

Naturally, the buyer can choose for himself what engine size of the Volkswagen Tiguan to choose. This should be guided by such preferences as the desired dynamics of the car and its efficiency.

Important! For constant pastime in traffic jams, you should not choose a 1.4-liter engine due to lower dynamic performance. Therefore, for many, the most successful alternative is a diesel unit, for which the problem of fuel freezing is not as relevant as for most other cars due to the presence of autonomous heating.

Transmission

When choosing the engine size of the Volkswagen Tiguan, you should also pay attention to the transmission. All variants of the car supplied to the Russian market have a six-speed gearbox. All versions of engines, except for the 1.4-liter, are paired with automatic transmissions.

Hydromechanical automatic transmissions are reliable, but the disadvantages of the development include the conditions of extreme overheating in which the gearbox units have to work. But this problem concerns not only Volkswagen, but also other cars equipped with hydromechanics.

Reliability, problems and repair of engines 2.0 TSI (2 gen.)

The second generation 2.0 TSI appeared in 2008 and replaced the 1st generation EA888 (CAW and CCT). It was created on the basis of the second generation 1.8 TSI (CDA and CDH). Approximately the same changes took place here as with the younger brother: a crankshaft with 52 mm journals was used instead of 58 mm, a hon was made differently to reduce friction, new pistons and rings of a special design were used, an adjustable oil pump was installed, 2 lambda probes, the motor was pulled up to the ecological class Euro-5.
But there is something here that is not on the 1.8 TSI gen 2. Here they installed an AVS (Audi valvelift system) system on the exhaust camshaft, which can switch the valve lift between two modes: 6.35 mm or 10 mm. The mode change occurs after 3100 rpm.
A variable valve timing system is installed on the intake shaft, as on the 1st generation EA888.

All this provides a power of 211 hp. at 4300-6000 rpm, torque increased to 350 Nm at 1500-4200 rpm. CDNC and CAEB engines could boast of such indicators.
CDNC motors corresponded to the Euro-5 class, and CAEB motors were produced under the ULEV 2 standard.
They produced programmatically altered CAEA motors for North America and CDNB for Europe, which had 180 hp. at 4000-6000 rpm and a torque of 320 Nm at 1500-3900 rpm.

In Europe, CCZ series motors were sold, which differ from CDN in that they do not have an AVS system. Such engines are: CCZA, CCZB, CCZC and CCZD. All of them have the same hardware, but different firmware. Their power is 211, 200, 170 and 180 hp. respectively. The torque of all motors is 280 Nm at 1700-5000 rpm.

The release of these engines continued until 2015, when they were completely replaced by the 3rd generation 2.0 TSI.

Disadvantages and problems of 2.0 TSI engines (2nd generation)

Your engine is a complete analogue of 1.8 TSI CDAB, CDAA and other engines of this series. All of them suffer from the same diseases: high oil consumption for various reasons, timing chain replacement after 100 thousand km, unstable speed, etc. We wrote about all this in this material.
Regarding oil consumption, for 2.0 TSI pistons are changed to Kolbenschmidt 40247600 with 21 pins. If there is a wear on the cylinders and it is necessary to sharpen the pistons to the repair size, then the pistons of the first repair Kolbenschmidt 40247610 or 40247620 are bought for the second repair.

Engine tuning 2.0 TSI CDNC

Chip tuning

Adding power to this motor is easier than you might think. It is enough to go to the tuners and fill in the Stage 1 firmware, this will immediately give up to 280 hp, torque up to 440-450 Nm, and even 300 hp on sports fuel. This is a good result, but it's better to do it wisely and immediately install a downpipe, a cold inlet, a larger intercooler and firmware for Stage 2. This will give 300 hp. on 98 gasoline and under 460 Nm of torque, and on sports fuel you can remove up to 320 horses and about 550 Nm of torque.
These are great figures, but if you want more, then you need to buy a turbo kit based on K04-064 with a good exhaust on a 76 mm pipe, new NGK plugs, a large intercooler and a cold intake - a typical option for 2.0TSI. There are countless such cars built and almost any tuner can repeat it. This will give you up to 350 hp. on 98 gasoline and under 500 Nm of torque. On sports fuel, such engines can produce up to 370-380 hp. and 550 Nm of torque.

Tiguan 1.4 TSI engines with a capacity of 122 and 150 horsepower are also installed on the Jetta sedan. Their detailed technical description is offered. We will talk about more powerful power units with a working volume of 2 liters. This is a Tiguan 2.0 TSI engine with a power of 170 hp. and 200 hp Actually structurally, the engines are similar, the difference is in the performance of the turbine. For a power unit of 170 hp they put a BorgWarner K03 turbine on a 200 hp engine. put the KKK K04 turbine. Basically, the device of a 2 liter Volkswagen Tiguan engine of different capacities is identical.

So 2.0TSI, it is an in-line 4-cylinder, 16-valve engine with a cast-iron cylinder block and an aluminum cylinder head. IN timing belt is worth. In the event of a belt break, the valve bends without fail. Hydraulic compensators provide a normal thermal clearance in the valve mechanism. There are phase shifters on the intake shaft, direct fuel injection, directly into the combustion chamber. This engine has a lot of modifications with a capacity of 170 to 265 horsepower and is installed on various models of Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, Skoda. Perhaps the most economical Diesel Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 TDI with a common rail injection system, which also has a large torque of 320 Nm.

cylinder head Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0L TDI diesel engine with common rail injection system is made of aluminum and has a design with a cross-flow of gases, two intake and two exhaust valves per cylinder. Valves are located vertically and are directed downwards. Two camshafts are located on top and are connected by a gear train with a spur gear that has a built-in gap compensator between the gear teeth. The timing is driven from the crankshaft using a toothed belt and a toothed pulley on the exhaust camshaft. The valves are actuated by low friction roller levers equipped with hydraulic compensators.

This motor uses an interesting timing drive scheme. The belt synchronizes the rotation of one camshaft with the crankshaft. And the second camshaft is synchronized with the first due to the gears on the camshafts. Further more detailed Specifications Tiguan 2.0 TDI
