The one and only SUV from Lamborghini. Lamborghini LM002: SUV with military roots Such different roles

Lamborghini LM002 - a short story

If this car did not exist, it would certainly have been worth building for Moscow in the 1990s. Huge and formidable, like an angry hippopotamus, and angular, like a teenager suffering from an inferiority complex, the product of the Italian-American automobile industry, well, very organically fit into the style of the capital.

Monumentally pompous and equally lubok offices growing like mushrooms, advertisements for restaurants and casinos, whimsically combining the traditions of first-generation merchants with the style of backyard punks, and of course, native broken-down roads, as well as familiar, like childhood friends, overflowing trash cans. The final chord of this colorful performance was the tearfully bloody TV series Brigada, so beloved by the people, where a monster named Lamborghini LM002 played an episodic, but noticeable role.

Of course, the car itself is not to blame for all this. Although ... from which side to look at it.

At the service of Uncle Sam

It all started much more prosaically. A decade and a half before Moscow began to turn into what it eventually turned into, the USSR seemed eternal, like the Kremlin wall, and the global auto industry, not yet bugged by environmentalists and more or less recovered from the crisis of the early 1970s, could allow to do bold and even daring things.

Firm Lamborghini, however, was in another crisis. In general, it is difficult to find a time in her history when she was not in a crisis. Unless in the earliest, romantic period, or in the later one - under the wing of a powerful German concern. But in 1977, the time for a global connection and takeover had not yet come, and the Italian company, widely known for excellent, but not profitable sports cars, took up the creation of an SUV for the American army. The idea is ingenious in its own way: military orders are a tasty morsel for any manufacturer. If, of course, he is able to cope with them. But the Italians found an American partner - MTI (Mobility Technology International). The task was this: to create a universal car more powerful and more spacious than the Jeep and Ford M151 in service.

As a result of joint efforts in 1977, a huge, with a base of 3000 mm, a “beast” named Lamborghini Сheetah (“Cheetah”) arose. Fiberglass panels were hung on a tubular steel frame (however, armor plates were also provided), and a 5.9-liter Chrysler V8 engine was placed at the back.

Probably, the partners have also learned from the experience of the American company FMC. A fairly well-known food equipment manufacturer back in 1970 created a very similar rear-engined XR311 prototype. Perhaps the experience of Italians in creating sports models with a power unit near the rear axle also affected.

Collected "Chita" in San Jose, then brought to a car dealership in Geneva and again returned overseas for a short test. The main problem, as it seemed then, was insufficient engine power - 183 hp. at 4000 rpm. American multi-liter engines, as you know, have never been very powerful (not to mention the overseas SAE standard, which involves measuring the power of a “bare” engine without attachments). But the Italians did not despair and decided to build a second prototype. Moreover, the idea was approved by the then owners of Lamborghini, the Mimran brothers. Especially fired up 24-year-old Patrick - an artist, photographer and representative of the French bohemia.

In 1981, the LM001 model was shown in Geneva. The car still looked impressive, but it had doors, and in addition to the same American engine, it was planned to install its own V12 with a volume of 4.75 liters and a power of 332 hp. Now that's a Lamborghini! The talented designer Giulio Alfieri, who was lured from Maserati, took an active part in the creation of this car.

The car was again sent for testing in the American desert, where, according to rumors, the military broke it. In addition, it finally became clear: a car with an overloaded rear is poorly controlled. And the company took on a new project.

Not to the world, so to the feast

In 1982, the LM002 prototype appeared (at the development stage, the car was called LMA, A - anterione, “front”). Of course, much remains of the rear-engined samples. The huge machine with a wheelbase of about 3 m had permanent four-wheel drive, a reduction gear, a forced-lock limited slip center differential and limited slip differentials. Instead of a three-speed automatic to a 332 hp engine. attached a five-speed manual. All this stood on huge 16-inch wheels with wide tires. Soon the wheels were increased to 17 inches, and Pirelli created Scorpion tires with a dimension of 325 / 65VR17 specifically for Lamborghini in two versions, one specifically for sand.

There was now a long hood with powerful air intakes in front, and a body in the back. The pickup scheme was explained by the fact that hopes for the army's future of the car had not yet been lost.

Provided option LM003 with a 3.6-liter 180-horsepower VM turbodiesel. A prototype LM004 was also built with a 7L V12 designed for boats. This monster developed 420 hp at 4500 rpm. and gave out 600 Nm at 3500 rpm!

Meanwhile, hopes for a super-profitable order from the US Army finally collapsed. In 1983, the victory in the competition under the HMMWV program (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle - “Highly mobile multipurpose vehicle”) was won by the product of AM General (this name was given in 1970 to the unit engaged in the production of military equipment that separated from the parent company Jeep Corporation ). This car was put into service, having received its own name Humvee. Later, a civilian version of the car called Hummer will appear. But the Italians did not stop and in 1985 they began mass production of the Lamborghini LM002. The car was equipped with a 5.2-liter V12 with a capacity of 450 hp. The car reached 100 km / h in 8.5 seconds and could accelerate to 210 km / h. At the same time, the rear brakes are drum! That's really unique Italian style! All this miracle absorbed an average of 35 liters of high-octane gasoline per 100 km. Of course, not in heavy off-road mode.

The automotive world took the appearance of the Italian titanium in a state of turmoil. Admiration and even admiration were densely mixed with irony. In October 1987, the American magazine Car & Driver, having tested the car, advised selling "your Testarossa" (meaning, of course, Ferrari), as a new "status symbol of the city" appeared.

By the way, 60 out of 301 serial LM002s were made by American specifically for the USA. The cars differed mainly in finishing, in particular, especially luxurious OZ rims.

One of the first buyers of the Italian miracle was King Hassan of Morocco. Bought a car and the driver of "Formula 1" Keke Rosberg. In 1989, for the Sultan of Brunei, the famous connoisseur of beauty and the owner of a huge collection of the most expensive cars, Salvatore Diamanta's workshop produced a single copy of the Lamborghini LM002 station wagon with a particularly rich finish.

Fans have nicknamed the Italian pickup truck "Rambo". The second film of the bloodthirsty series was released exactly in 1988, when interest in the car was on the rise. Here, by the way, the times of the victorious coming of the Lamborghini LM002 to the Soviet Union came, reluctantly, but inevitably turning into a new Russia.

Such different roles

In the late 1980s, in the UK, a Lamborghini LM002 cost about 100,000 pounds, and, say, in Holland in 1990, they asked for 395,000 guilders for a Lambo. For comparison: for a Ferrari 348, 274,000 guilders should have been paid, a Fiat Panda in the basic configuration cost 13,950, and Aleko 141 (in our world "Moskvich-2141") - 19,985.

For the Paris-Dakar rally of 1988, they prepared a lightweight car, from which, in particular, they removed all unnecessary “decorations”, put a 600-horsepower engine and a corresponding 600-liter gas tank on it. But the car was never completed. The Italian giant, however, went to the start of the "Rally of the Pharaohs" in Egypt and the rally in Greece. Moreover, even the famous Sandro Munari, the champion of Europe and the world, sat behind the wheel. But the Lamborghini LM002 was not marked by noticeable sporting achievements.

And what about military service? Four dozen cars were bought by the army of Saudi Arabia and about 100, they say, Libyan. The famous colonel, as you know, did not spare money for such things. However, it ended badly...

Agree, the Lamborghini LM002 has a strange fate. In fact, the Italian titan remained a loser; I didn’t really become a military man or an athlete. Of course, he is also no farmer. Is it an actor? In addition to the aforementioned sugary "Brigade", the car also appeared in several foreign films. True, all of them in 15 years will be remembered only by very obsessed historians of mass culture.

By the way, in the finals of the second "Brigade" in 2012, they say that the black Lambo was blown up. Know ours! You should be more careful. And not at all because today in Moscow the local company Thiesen (a well-known dealer in rare retro cars) is asking for 250,000 euros for an LM002 from Germany. Those about whom the films beloved in Russia are made, as, apparently, those who make them, cannot be frightened by such a price. But after all, Lamborghini LM002 until 1992 made only 301 pieces (not counting single early prototypes). Half of them are somewhere in the Arabian and African sands - with machine guns in their bodies. So you can "explode". But without these amazing, paradoxical strong men, history (and not only automotive history) would be noticeably more boring.

Jeep Lamborghini is the only SUV produced by the company in its entire history. The model was first introduced back in 1986. For all the time, only 301 cars were produced.

When you look at the Lamborghini jeep, the movie "Brigade" immediately comes to mind. It was there that this luxurious handsome man was shown in all its glory. In life, the car looks just as attractive, pompous, majestic, menacing.

The square front end is strictly designed in the general style of SUVs. The exterior has a large number of angular, massive elements, strict geometric proportions. A well-defined rectangular windshield on narrow pillars looks solid. The unusual tuning of the car clearly emphasizes the huge hump of the air intake, perched in the middle of the hood.

Appearance review

The modern projector optics of the Lamborghini jeep, which can be seen in the photo, with its round shape resembles the VAZ one. The radiator grill has the same rectangular shape as the car itself. In combination with a massive kenguryatnik, it looks powerful, solid, majestic.

The frame of the new version of the Lamborghini jeep shown in the photo is of a spatial type, and not of a ladder type, like in conventional SUVs. Body panels are made of carbon fiber, in the same way as in sports cars.

sidewalls LM002, presented in the photos, look just as ambitious as the front. Here we can observe the same clear edges, adjusted proportions. The roof line, like the window line, is absolutely straight. The huge area of side glazing provides excellent visibility. Broken wheel arches accommodate 345/60 R17 rollers for excellent road holding.

Body Options

The Lamborghini SUV is available both in a pickup truck and in a full-fledged version. But in both versions, the feed remains the same flawless, powerful and stylish. Its brutal design is also not devoid of geometry.

Attention is riveted by huge rectangular lights, between which a spare wheel is installed. A huge loading area testifies to the ability of the car to take more than one hundred kg of cargo on board.

Front and rear mounted independent suspension on double wishbones with a triangular design. The dimensions of the body have also changed. Its length was 4790 mm. The creators took 2000 mm to the width, and the height was 1850 mm. The ground clearance is also impressive. Its value was almost 300 mm. It is unlikely that any other jeep can boast such clearance.

SUV interior

The interior view of the Lamborghini Jeep is simply amazing. Its design is made in the same rectangular style. The instrument panel is represented by an inclined panel on which several round dials are installed. The three-spoke steering wheel looks simple but stylish. The center console looks very unusual. Its upper part is two pairs of horizontal deflectors, slightly protruding forward.

Immediately below them is a panel with buttons and control keys. You will not see the usual touch screen here. A feature of the interior of the Lamborghini SUV is a high and wide tunnel between the front seats. Immediately near the front panel in a separate compartment is the gear lever.

The interior trim of the Lamborghini jeep shown in the photo significantly increases the price of the car, because it is made of genuine leather of the finest dressing. Everywhere you can see decorative elements made of natural wood of valuable species. In a word, beauty, chic and brilliance. The quality of materials and finishes is impeccable. There is absolutely nothing to complain about here.

The front seats are comfortable, large, roomy. True, they are practically devoid of lateral supports. The back row is represented by two separate seats, which are separated by a wide tunnel and an armrest, which makes it difficult to move around the cabin.

Despite the enormous size of the new Lamborghini SUV shown in the photo, its interior cannot be called spacious. And the "culprit" of tightness is precisely the high and wide tunnel.

Specifications

It is not surprising that the SUV from Lamborghini has excellent technical characteristics. In terms of power equipment, engineers carried out a lot of meticulous work. In the previous version, a 5.2-liter engine was installed, which produced 455 hp. At the same time, the acceleration time took 8.5 seconds, and the maximum speed was 201 km / h.

In the new version, shown in the photo of the updated Lamborghini SUV, which is sold at a fairly high price, instead of a 455-horsepower engine, a new 495-horsepower power unit will be installed under the hood. It is also known that the volume of the engine will increase to 7.2 liters.

As for indicators such as fuel consumption and acceleration time. Thanks to a powerful and durable engine, the car can accelerate to hundreds of kilometers per hour in just 5.5 seconds. Fuel consumption is not particularly pleased, however, given the power, this figure is fully justified.

In the combined cycle, the car will need about 27 liters of fuel. The maximum speed will be 220 km/h. It should be borne in mind that 16 liters of oil are poured into the motor itself, so that there is no need to talk about efficiency.

Interesting fact. The SUV has two calipers on the front brake discs. Rear mounted drum brakes. Such equipment allowed to significantly increase the reliability and safety of the car.

It is very, very difficult to buy a Lamborghini jeep in Russia today. This car is a real exclusive, and only very wealthy people own it, and even then only a few of them. How much does a car cost, and what is the price of the simplest configuration of a Lamborghini jeep?

It is rather difficult to answer this question. Approximate price of a new version of the Lamborghini Jeep LM002 will be about 30,000,000 rubles. The most complete version will cost about 40-45,000,000 rubles. Well, the price of the exclusive version of the Lamborghini SUV will completely exceed 100,000,000 rubles. True, such a car can only be purchased at an English auction.

It is known that sales of this handsome man are scheduled for the second half of 2019. The car is unlikely to reach Russia, but in Europe it will be sold, however, as before, in very limited quantities.

Now pay attention to and .

However, even more unusual than the Lamborghini off-road station wagon is the rally version of the LM002. Despite the fact that in his younger years Ferruccio Lamborghini himself went to the start of various races, including the famous Mille Miglia, later he did not at all strive to prove the superiority of his company's cars on the racetracks. But the Mimran family of Swiss businessmen, who took control of Automobili Lamborghini in the early 80s, decided that motorsport should be given a chance. At least when the famous French driver Henri Pescarolo, by the way, a four-time winner of the 24-hour race at Le Mans, voiced the idea of preparing a rally version of the LM002, his ideas found understanding and support in the company's top management.

The Lamborghini LM002 Rally project was created primarily to participate in the Paris-Dakar rally raid. The car received a forced up to 600 hp. gasoline V12 with additional air filters to protect against fine sand particles, an incredible fuel tank, the volume of which reached 600 liters, reinforced suspension, roll cage. In addition, thanks to an extreme weight loss program, the heavyweight SUV managed to lose weight. In the process of preparing the car, Henri Pescarolo, who was going to drive the rally Lambo Rambo himself, left the project due to financial disagreements, but work did not stop. Now the LM002 Rally was planned to be entrusted to the care of the legendary Sandro Munari, who won the World Rally Championship three times with the equally legendary Lancia Stratos.

A unique racing Lamborghini was entered for the 1987 Rally of the Pharaohs, but Sandro Munari never made it to the start. Due to the tragic death of one of the main sponsors of the project, literally on the eve of the race, he crashed on a boat, the team, as a sign of grief, decided to postpone the debut. The rally LM002's baptism of fire took place at a sprint rally raid in Greece in 1988. Sandro Munari was confidently in third place overall until he was forced to retire due to technical problems. Unfortunately, the debut of the car turned out to be its swan song. The new owner of Lamborghini just at that time was the American Chrysler Corporation, whose bosses turned out to be completely uninterested in continuing the racing program. As a result, the factory-prepared LM002 Rally never made it to the start of the Dakar.

But what failed at the head enterprise turned out to be within the power of private traders. In 1988, the Swiss World LM Racing team announced an almost stock version of the SUV to participate in the Paris-Dakar rally, and eight years later, another African chance for the LM002 was given by the Italian Andrea Barenghi, who started the Paris-Granada-Dakar marathon on a thoroughly prepared Rambo Lambo. Alas, in neither case, the car failed to reach the finish line.

Interest in the Lamborghini LM002 SUV is associated with the recent premiere of the Lamborghini Urus hybrid crossover, with which the company will enter the premium SUV segment.

At one time, this car was undeservedly (or deservedly) forgotten and there were several reasons for this. In fact, under a more fortunate set of circumstances, the LM002 jeep could well replace the famous Hammer and would claim the title of the most brutal SUV. But alas, it was the HMMWV that became the “icon” of style for all fans of military style, and the Lamborghini SUV, produced in a small batch, can now only be found among the most ardent fans.

This is today Lamborghini – a thriving brand with a turnover of about 500 million euros per year. But there were times when the company only miraculously stayed afloat, desperately fighting for its own survival. The oil crisis of 1973, which paralyzed the global auto industry, could not but affect Lamborghini - the most severe fuel quotas were introduced in Europe, the USA and Japan, and supercars did not fall under the category of "economical" cars. Therefore, even despite the success of the Lamborghini Countach supercar, the economic situation of the company was so precarious that in 1974 it was sold.

In 1977, the US Department of Defense announced a competition for a new vehicle for the US Army. The prospects were very tempting - not only did the winner automatically receive a tender for $60 million (a lot of money at that time, a barrel of oil cost $12 after the rise in price), the victory meant joining the "club" of Pentagon suppliers and promised big profits in the future, so how the US war machine was consuming the budget at a tremendous rate. Not surprisingly, all reserve funds were allocated for participation in the project, including a loan recently received from the Italian government, which did not allow Lamborghini to go bankrupt.

As a result, the company presented a prototype of the Lamborghini Cheetah for testing - an all-wheel drive SUV weighing almost 2 tons and an extremely controversial design. The development of the SUV took place with the participation of specialists from Chrysler, so he received a powerful Chrysler V8 engine with a volume of 5.9 liters and a power of 183 hp. and a 4-speed automatic transmission. But the design was, as mentioned above, very controversial.

Prototype Lamborghini Cheetah

Firstly, the car was designed under the influence of past experience in the production of sports cars and the lack of this experience in the design of military vehicles. Therefore, instead of the traditional ladder frame, a complex spatial frame was used, and carbon fiber panels were used as the material for body cladding.

Secondly, to protect the car, its engine and transmission were placed at the rear - according to engineers, this arrangement increased survival and reduced the possibility of critical damage in the frontal projection to zero. But as a result, the entire load fell on the rear axle, the car turned out to be very unstable and shattered on the first test.

Attempts to bring the SUV did not bring the desired result - the commission even refused to allow the Lamborghini LM001 to be tested, despite the best efforts of lobbyists from Chrysler.

But the Arab sheikhs, who received fabulous profits from the oil trade, became interested in an SUV. Therefore, he underwent another modernization and under the name Lamborghini LM002 goes into production for $60,000, as one of the very first premium SUVs, far ahead of its time.

Exterior

The Jeep Lamborghini was produced in two body styles: a pickup truck and a five-door body. In fact, the five-door version was the same pickup truck with a slightly modified rear end covered by a hard metal roof.

In many ways, the SUV borrowed features from its predecessor, designed for military purposes. Straight angular forms of body panels, front power kit, an unusual shape of the rear, which allows, if necessary, to transport several people there - all this is from there.

But a number of elements are still borrowed from another "weight" category. This applies to body panels - they are made of composite materials, which made it possible to reduce the weight of the car to 2700 kg - for example, the mass of the modern F-150 Raptor, which has approximately the same dimensions, is approaching 3000 kg. And this despite the fact that lightweight alloys are widely used in the design of the F-150, including in the frame, while the LM002 space frame is made entirely of steel.

The radiator grille is slightly shifted inside the body and protected by a powerful metal pipe. There is a prominent air intake on the hood, which is designed to improve air circulation in the cramped engine compartment. Due to the high ground clearance of 295 mm, reinforced bottom protection is visible, which can protect it from a collision with an obstacle.

Interior

Inside, the salon strikes the eye with a wealth of finishes - it is immediately clear that the spartan appearance of the Lamborghini LM002 is deceptive.

There are only four seats in the cabin - a significant part of the space is occupied by the transmission tunnel. The decoration uses genuine leather and precious woods.

Although the design itself will seem too archaic for a modern person, do not forget that the car was released in 1986 and for its time it was simply luxurious - like the Bentley Bentayga salon is now. It even had air conditioning and an expensive stereo system.

Specifications Lamborghini LM002

Unlike the prototype, which failed in testing, the designers took into account the shortcomings and installed the engine in the front. A real monster is installed under the hood - a modernized engine from the Lamborghini Countach supercar. The displacement of this carbureted 12-cylinder V-twin engine was increased to 5.2 liters, resulting in an increase in power to 444 hp. and up to almost 600 Nm of torque.

That's not all - some LM002 models were equipped with a V12 engine called L804, which had a volume of 7200 cm3 and was capable of developing power in excess of 550 hp. Both versions used a five-speed manual transmission with a two-speed transfer case designed to increase the flotation of this all-wheel drive SUV.

But even with a “standard” engine, the dynamics of this SUV are simply amazing - an almost three-ton car accelerates up to 100 km/h in 7.8 s- this is a very high figure for that time, although the maximum speed is far from the speed of mass-produced supercars - "only" 188 km / h.

Since the SUV had a very high fuel consumption - up to 30 liters, the fuel tank had a capacity of 290 liters. This was enough for almost 1000 km - an indispensable advantage in the desert.

Outcome

In just seven years of production, just over 300 cars, of which only 160 were made in the civilian version. Another 120 were produced in military modification. Muammar Gaddafi purchased 100 SUVs for the Libyan army, and another 40 for the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Defense for its border service.

It all started in 1977 with Lamborghini Cheetah. The company developed this SUV specifically for the United States as part of an army tender. In design, the Italians were based on an experienced 1969 American military jeep FMC XR311. The only copy was built in San Jose (California) and demonstrated to the military - but they have never been tested like that. The tender was given to AMC, resulting in the famous Hummer. The Cheetah was shown in Geneva, after which it was sold to the Michigan company Teledyne, which made 4 copies of it for various purposes - an ambulance, an armored car, a special forces vehicle, hoping to still get an army contract. For a long time it was believed that all 5 cars were cut into metal, but in early 2016 (!) On a farm in Michigan, a genuine Cheetah, the very first copy, was discovered. Now it has been transferred to the Lamborghini Museum.

In 1981, in Geneva, the company introduced a civilian SUV based on the Cheetah - Lamborghini LM001(so that the development is not in vain). The car had an AMC 8-cylinder engine and accelerated rather poorly due to poor layout. It could not have anything to do with the Lamborghini brand, and the LM001 remained in a single copy. To this day, the prototype has not reached.

At the Geneva Salon in 1982, the second version was shown - Lamborghini LMA002. The car was very similar to the LM001, but the main thing is that the engine, which was located at the back in 001, moved here to where it should be - forward. The 2600-kilogram monster seemed to critics and the creators themselves to be a successful development.

... and the only production SUV of the brand appeared - Lamborghini LM002. It received a slightly modified design (in particular, the front end) 7.2-liter 12-cylinder engine and was a luxury car. Especially for the LM002, Pirelli has developed a special line of Scorpion tires. In total, 328 copies of the SUV were built on special orders from 1986 to 1993.

The most original was, of course, the model Lamborghini LM002 Estate, made for the Sultan of Brunei Hassanal Bolkiah. Legends say that there was only one copy (the first, silver, pictured), but in fact three Estates were created with slightly different types of roofs. All have been preserved to this day in various private hands (there is only one car in Bolkiah's garage, copy No. 2 with a high roof).

The story was continued, and the light was born Lamborghini LM003. The car was made in one copy and had a different filling from the LM003 - a 3.6-liter 150-horsepower VM Motori engine. The concept failed. Externally, the car was very reminiscent of Cheetah in a closed layout.

In 1997, Zagato designers decided to restore historical injustice and suggested that Lamborghini still launch the 003 in an updated design and showed Lamborghini LM003 Borneo. Things did not go beyond beautiful sketches.

In parallel with LM002, it was planned to launch another successor of LMA002 into the series - Lamborghini LM004. Outwardly, it did not differ from the LM002, but had a different interior design and a different engine. As a result, the 004th did not get into the series, the only copy was made in 1984 and later converted into the 002nd.

This is where the history of off-road successors of the Cheetah stopped. But in 2006, there were sketches of the alleged return of Lamborghini SUVs, models Lamborghini LM005 Lagartijo. The author was the artist Andrea Rosati, but the matter did not move beyond illustrations.

Finally, at the Beijing Auto Show in 2012, the company's first SUV after a long break was shown - Lamborghini Urus. It is assumed that the car will enter the series in 2018 and will be sold in the amount of about 3,000 cars a year.
