The culprits were the unsuccessful design of the cylinder-piston group, which was changed under warranty, and the “stuck” oil separator valve.

There was also a jump on the stretched timing chain on these motors, as evidenced by a difficult start with a characteristic crack. However, this misfortune was typical for cars until 2011 of release. But almost everyone praises the diesel 2.0 TDI, even despite cases of flywheel failure and a clogged particulate filter. We do not yet know anything about systemic problems with 6-cylinder engines. But their content is much more expensive.

Don't mess with robots

Front hub bearings run 60-70 thousand km. Their service life is highly dependent on the quality of the roads. About the same amount you can not follow the anthers of the outer CV joints. A wide range of gasoline and turbodiesel power units was intended for the A4, and both types are represented in our country in almost equal proportions.

As operating experience has shown, a number of problems have been identified in each of the gasoline engines. General - the failure of individual ignition coils is not ruled out, however, this problem occurs much less frequently than on its predecessor.


The most common gasoline engine is 1.8 TFSI, and the rarest is the top 3.2 liter. The most massive diesel engine is 2.0 TDI. The weak point of all gasoline engines of the TFSI family is the timing, premature chain stretching and breakdown of its hydraulic tensioner were noted. This can happen with runs from 70 to 100 thousand km and threatens to slip the chain and fatally meet the valves with the pistons. Therefore, with the indicated runs, in order to avoid trouble, it is necessary to monitor the condition of these parts.

The 1.8 liter engine also leaks high pressure pumps (replacement required). 2.0-liter "gasolines" are characterized by increased oil "appetite". If it is more than 0.5 liters per 1 thousand km, the service station first suggests replacing the crankcase ventilation system. If this does not help, the engine needs to be repaired with the replacement of the piston group.

The most reliable of the diesel engines is the most massive 2.0 liter. In the 3.0-liter, the failure of the intake manifold dampers is noted (more often seen by the Check engine signal light) and the throttle valve block (the engine loses traction, there are interruptions in operation, smoke increases).

"Fours" are front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, however, the latter are much less common. Compared to its predecessor, the setting of the proprietary quattro all-wheel drive has changed - in this generation of the A4, priority is given to the rear wheels: in normal modes, 40:60, while the predecessor had an equal torque distribution (50:50). All-wheel drive versions are distinguished by better stability and maneuverability than their mono-drive "brothers". No characteristic weaknesses were identified in the quattro transmission.

Transmission

The range of gearboxes designed for the A4 is also very diverse: there is a 6-speed "mechanics" (the least common), a Multitronic variator (for low-power front-wheel drive versions), a robotic manual gearbox - S-tronic (an analogue of the Volkswagen DSG) and a classic "automatic" - tiptronic.

The “robot” with two clutches turned out to be the most unreliable - the “mechatronics” control unit is a weak point (manifested by twitching in motion). Sometimes the problem can be solved by reprogramming the "brains", but often it is necessary to change the problem node.

In a manual gearbox aggregated with diesel engines, failure of the dual-mass flywheel is possible (clicks and knocks at the start of movement and idling).

But the most trouble-free were Multitronic (it is a new generation, and the weak point inherent in its predecessor has been eliminated in it) and Tiptronic.

Suspension

Structurally, the suspension of the car is similar to its predecessor - front and rear "multi-links" with anti-roll bars. To reduce the weight of the unsprung masses, the front suspension arms (four on each side) and the rear suspension lower wishbones are made of aluminum alloy. The chassis is characterized by moderate rigidity and energy intensity.

The trunk volume of the A4 is average compared to its competitors - 480 liters versus 460 liters for the BMW 3 Series, 475 liters for the Mercedes C-class and 565 liters for the VW Passat (B6). Folding rear seats until 2011 - optional, after - in the "base". As an option, the A4 was equipped with the Audi drive select proprietary system, which allows you to change the character of the car (the settings of the shock absorbers adjustable in stiffness, the responsiveness of the power steering and the accelerator pedal vary) - the versions before restyling have three operating modes: Comfort, Auto and Dynamic, and after 2011. a fourth one was added - Efficient. Modes are changed by buttons near the gear lever. Adjustable shock absorbers proved to be no less reliable than conventional ones.

Sufficiently durable and suspension. Most of the original "consumables" of the front and rear suspensions are capable of reaching up to 100 thousand km. Slightly less (about 80 thousand km) are hydraulic silent blocks of the rear lower front suspension arms and about 60 thousand km - stabilizer struts. At the same time, running gear repairs are expensive - the front arms are supplied with ball joints, and lower arms are offered in the rear suspension along with rubber bands.

Difficulties arise with the replacement - over time, the steel bolts in the aluminum knuckles of fastening the upper arms and the breakup rods of the rear suspension tightly turn sour. They have to be heated, drilled and sometimes even cut off with a grinder.

Steering

The rack and pinion steering, equipped with an electric power steering, has established itself as reliable. Steering tips are able to withstand at least 100 thousand km, and traction - about 150 thousand km.

The A4 also has an electrified parking brake - it is activated by a button near the gear lever, and the brake mechanisms block the pads by means of electric motors installed on each rear caliper. Unlike the Audi A6 in the back of the 4F and the VW Passat (B6), the Quartet has no problems with the electric handbrake. The only remark to the brakes is that over time, the rear caliper brackets break and knock on bumps.

Weaknesses of the car

  • The weak point of all gasoline units of the TFSI family is the premature stretching of the timing chain and the wear of its hydraulic tensioner.
  • In S-tronic "robots" similar to VW DSG, the "mechatronics" control unit delivers problems.
  • The weak point of A4 optics is LED lights. So, in the front, the running lights failed (more often during the warranty period), in the back, the LEDs burned out, and in Avant station wagons, the board oxidizes over time and the LEDs of the additional brake light burn out. As operating experience has shown, a number of problems have been identified in each of the gasoline engines. General - failure of individual ignition coils is not ruled out, however, this malfunction occurs much less frequently than on the predecessor.

The most common gasoline engine is 1.8 TFSI, and the rarest is the top 3.2 liter. The most massive diesel engine is 2.0 TDI.

The weak point of all gasoline engines of the TFSI family is the timing, premature chain stretching and breakdown of its hydraulic tensioner are noted. This can happen with runs from 70 to 100 thousand km and threatens to slip the chain and fatally meet the valves with the pistons. Therefore, with the indicated runs, in order to avoid trouble, it is necessary to monitor the condition of these parts.

The 1.8 liter engine also leaks high pressure pumps (replacement required). 2.0-liter "gasolines" are characterized by increased oil "appetite". If it is more than 0.5 liters per 1 thousand km, the service station first suggests replacing the crankcase ventilation system. If this does not help, the engine needs to be repaired with the replacement of the piston group.

The most reliable of the diesel engines is the most massive 2.0 liter. In the 3.0-liter, the failure of the intake manifold dampers is noted (more often seen by the Check engine signal light) and the throttle valve block (the engine loses traction, there are interruptions in operation, smoke increases).

New Priority

"Fours" are front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, however, the latter are much less common in Ukraine. Compared to its predecessor, the setting of the proprietary quattro all-wheel drive has changed - in this generation of the A4, priority is given to the rear wheels: in normal modes 40:60, while the predecessor had an equal torque distribution (50:50). All-wheel drive versions are distinguished by better stability and maneuverability than their mono-drive "brothers". No characteristic weaknesses were identified in the quattro transmission.

The range of gearboxes designed for the A4 is also very diverse: there is a 6-speed “mechanics” (the least common), a Multitronic variator (for low-power front-wheel drive versions), a robotic manual gearbox - S-tronic (an analogue of the Volkswagen DSG) and a classic “automatic” - tiptronic.

The “robot” with two clutches turned out to be the most unreliable - the “mechatronics” control unit is a weak point (manifested by twitching in motion). Sometimes the problem can be solved by reprogramming the "brains", but often it is necessary to change the problem node.

In a manual gearbox aggregated with diesel engines, a failure of the dual-mass flywheel is possible (clicks and knocks at the start of movement and idling).

But the most trouble-free were Multitronic (it is a new generation, and the weak point inherent in its predecessor has been eliminated in it) and Tiptronic.

Changeable character

Structurally, the suspension of the car is similar to its predecessor - front and rear "multi-links" with anti-roll bars. To reduce the weight of the unsprung masses, the front suspension arms (four on each side) and the rear suspension lower wishbones are made of aluminum alloy. The chassis is characterized by moderate rigidity and energy intensity.

The trunk volume of the A4 is average compared to its competitors - 480 liters versus 460 liters for the BMW 3 Series, 475 liters for the Mercedes C-class and 565 liters for the VW Passat (B6). Folding rear seats until 2011 - optional, after - in the "base".

As an option, the A4 was equipped with the Audi drive select proprietary system, which allows you to change the character of the car (the settings of the shock absorbers adjustable in stiffness, the responsiveness of the power steering and the accelerator pedal vary) - the versions before restyling have three operating modes: Comfort, Auto and Dynamic, and after 2011. a fourth one was added - Efficient. Quite durable and suspension. Most of the original "consumables" of the front and rear suspensions are capable of reaching up to 100 thousand km. Slightly less (about 80 thousand km) are hydraulic silent blocks of the rear lower front suspension arms and about 60 thousand km - stabilizer struts. At the same time, running gear repairs are expensive - the front levers are supplied with ball joints, and the lower levers are offered in the rear suspension along with the “elastic bands”.

Difficulties arise with the replacement - over time, steel bolts in the aluminum knuckles of fastening the upper levers and breakup rods of the rear suspension tightly turn sour. They have to be heated, drilled and sometimes even cut off with a grinder.

The rack and pinion steering, equipped with an electric power steering, has established itself as reliable. Steering tips are able to withstand at least 100 thousand km, and traction - about 150 thousand km.

The parking brake is also electrified at the A4 - it is activated by a button near the gear lever, and the brake mechanisms block the pads by means of electric motors installed on each rear caliper. Unlike the Audi A6 in the back of the 4F and the VW Passat (B6), the Quartet has no problems with the electric handbrake. The only remark to the brakes is that over time, the rear caliper brackets break and knock on bumps.

Weaknesses of the car

The weak point of all gasoline units of the TFSI family is the premature stretching of the timing chain and the wear of its hydraulic tensioner.

In S-tronic "robots" similar to VW DSG, the control unit - "mechatronic" delivers problems.

The weak point of A4 optics is LED lights. So, in the front there was a failure of running lights (more often - during the warranty period), in the back - burnout of the LEDs, and in the Avant station wagons, the board oxidizes over time and the LEDs of the additional brake light burn out. In all cases, the headlights for replacement are assembled.

I am an Audi fan. The “Four” likes driving performance - the engine is torquey and allows you to drive actively. At the same time, in the city it is possible to spend about 10 liters per "hundred", and outside the city at 140 km / h - about 7.5 liters. The suspension, along with high-profile tires, is comfortable and energy-intensive, holding the car well both in corners and at high speeds. The equipment of the machine is rich, the quality of materials is high, the details are carefully adjusted. Noise---and-isolation is good. The trunk is big.

I do not like

I don't like the low front bumper. The convenience of the middle rear passenger is hampered by a large floor tunnel. Too bad the rear seats don't fold down. Do not transport long items - rear armrest without access door to the cargo compartment. Replaced only the front shock absorbers and their support pads. But the reason is not in their wear and tear, but in the quality of the roads - in the winter I got into a hole. There were no other problems.
