The main emphasis in the 70s was on a bright appearance, relegating power to the background. The company took up the creation of powerful engines only in the 90s, which resulted in the creation of the famous V12 with a volume of 6.9 liters, the power of which was 508 hp. It was intended for installation on the Mercedes-Benz E-class.

Throughout the history of its work, the company has repeatedly been awarded the title of the best car tuning studio.

Alpina. As a student at a German university, Burkard Bovensiepen could not have imagined that repairing his own FIAT-500 after a breakdown would be so successful. After that, he decided to test his strength already on the BMW-500, which, after improvements, acquired not only increased power, but also the first owner.

In 1964, representatives of BMW interested in his activities, who sent for testing the two-chamber carburetors he had created. Pleased with this approval, Bovensiepen opens his car tuning studio.

The dynamic qualities of the updated cars were demonstrated on the racing tracks. For the 24-hour race "Spa-Francorchamps", a special modification of the BMW 3.0 was carried out, on which specially designed 20-spoke wheels were installed, which eventually became a hallmark of the model.

One of the best achievements of the automaker was the fastest Alpina B10 Bi-Turbo sedan, created in 1989. For the anniversary of the company in 1999, the most powerful diesel unit D10 Bi-turbo, whose engine power was 245 hp, rolled off the assembly line, becoming the most powerful sedan in the world with a diesel power plant.

Hennessey Performance. The brainchild of John Hennessy, known as a race car driver, was created in 1991 in the state of Texas and gained fame as one of the world's most productive tuning studios.

Together with a group of mechanics, as a trial, he tried to improve Japanese-made cars that never went into mass production. Success came to his company after working on the Dodge Viper car, which, after the update, became more powerful, reached a maximum speed of 217 km / h and opened up access to participation in any kind of competition.

The development of the 1TR engine led to the emergence of a series of 2 TR engines, to which the 2tr fe belongs. In creating the power plant, many technical solutions were taken from the earlier 3RZ-FE. So, for example, the cylinder block has undergone minimal changes. The greatest modernization touched the cylinder head, in which a special system for changing the valve timing was used.

Description of the type of engine and the stages of its development and production

The 2tr fe motor begins its history of inheritance back in 1953. At this time, the first internal combustion engine of the R series was released. In 1982, after making a number of changes, the world saw the Y series of engines. Restyling was not long in coming, and after a significant upgrade, RZ engines were released in 1989. The design solutions in this series turned out to be quite advanced, so the RZ did not receive significant changes for a long time. In 2003, Toyota nevertheless decided to update the series by launching the production of 1TR engines. Also in the same year, production of a more powerful 2tr fe engine began.

Among the four-cylinder engines produced by Toyota 2tr fe is the most voluminous. In 2015, a slight restyling was made, as a result of which the compression ratio increased and both camshafts received a Dual-VVTi variable valve timing system. The motor has an impressive weight, since the cylinder block is cast from cast iron.

The 2tr fe engine does not bend the valve, since the pistons do not have a flat bottom, but with special depressions. Thanks to this technical solution, a rupture of the timing belt does not lead to a major overhaul of the power plant. The oil consumption of the 2tr fe engine is impressive. The technical characteristics of the power plant that left the factory indicate that 300 grams of oil per 1000 kilometers are not a cause for concern. The 2tr fe engine is sensitive to what kind of oil to pour into it. The manufacturer recommends using a lubricant with a viscosity of 0W-20, 5W-20. The basis should be only synthetic. The maintenance description given in the manual says that 2tr fe spark plugs should be changed every 20 thousand kilometers. Increased fuel consumption should also be a reason to control the state of ignition. If necessary, the replacement of candles should be carried out ahead of time.

Overview of faults and solutions

With proper operation of the motor, its overhaul will be required when the odometer shows more than 500 thousand kilometers. This is due to the high reliability of Toyota engines. Upon reaching 250,000 kilometers, the internal combustion engine may require the replacement of piston rings. The mileage before repair depends on which oil for the 2tr fe engine was used during operation. There are units operating for 6,000 thousand km to the capital.

Power plant tuning options

The most popular tuning 2tr fe is to install a turbo kit. It is not rational to increase the volume of the combustion chamber, since this version of the engine is already a bloated modification of the 1TR. Intervention in the device of the cylinder-piston group is recommended only if all other modernization is completed. The scope of work in this case is large, since each node of the power plant will have to be redone.

It is possible to install a turbo kit both stock and manufactured by Toyota. The installation scheme of the kits is fundamentally the same.

Common faults and operation

Like its predecessor, the Toyota 2TR engine is extremely reliable and stable. The only weak point is the front crankshaft oil seal (especially on models before 2008). It occasionally leaks. It needs to be replaced with a more modern copy. It happens that the engines begin to vibrate in the cold. The reason lies in the automatic transmission. You need to change the oil in it. With constant maintenance, refueling only with high-quality gasoline and filling with the oil recommended by the manufacturer, the durability of the unit can be extended to the maximum possible limit.

Reliability, problems and engine repair Toyota 2TR-FE

It was 2003 and the excellent 3RZ-FE was quite outdated by this point, but sending a successful engine to a museum is not a very reasonable idea. Accordingly, it was decided to update it and continue to put it on SUVs and commercial vehicles. For the new engine, which was named 2TR, they took a cylinder block from 3RZ with two balancer shafts, and the cylinder head was subjected to some modifications. On this head, a variable valve timing system on the VVTi intake camshaft and hydraulic lifters were used. The timing chain was replaced with a new one. On the 2TR-FE, a different plastic intake manifold and electronic throttle were applied. The control unit has been completely changed.
These improvements added about 10 hp relative to the 3RZ, improved low-end traction and reduced fuel consumption (minus the 3RZ-FE).
Since 2015, the 2TR has been equipped with a variable valve timing system on both Dual-VVTi camshafts, and the compression ratio has increased to 10.2.
All in all, the 2TR is a deeply upgraded 3RZ.
In addition to the 2.7 liter engine, the younger 2-liter 1TR is also included in the TR series.

Problems and disadvantages of Toyota 2TR engines

Like its predecessor, this is an extremely reliable motor, despite some complication of the design. The weak point of the 2TR and its illness (until 2008) is a problem with a leak in the front crankshaft oil seal, which is solved by replacing it with a new revision. Also, these motors differ in vibration at idle in cold weather due to automatic transmission. Change the oil in the box and the problem should go away.
It is advisable to pour engine oil in 2TR-FE recommended by the manufacturer, and regular maintenance and good gasoline will increase its resource to the maximum.

2TR Turbo. Compressor

The ways to increase the power of this engine are no different from its predecessor: you can buy a turbo kit or a compressor kit. There are a lot of turbo whales on sale, both on the Garrett T3 / T4, and on cheap Chinese turbines and components. Both those and those options will allow you to remove 250+ hp. on standard pistons, but Chinese kits don't last too long and most likely, after a few thousand km, you will have to look for a new turbine.
For quite a lot of money, you can buy a compressor kit for 2TR, based on the Rotrex C30-94. Their prices are much higher than for Chinese turbo kits, and the power is at least 250-270 hp. to the stock piston. Doing something more powerful is pointless, better buy a car with a V8.
