StarLine alarms: just add GSM! to the regions of Russia.

Despite the fact that today the vast majority of motorists use an alarm system with an LCD key fob as a security system, and a 433 or 868 MHz radio path is used as a control, the development of security systems according to the concept of the Evolution of car alarms does not stand still. At the current time, we are coming to the most convenient option for car owner authorization in operation - a label, and to a notification method - a mobile phone. So, what do developers and manufacturers of security and anti-theft products offer us now? Let's try to answer this question by comparing some models of popular anti-theft information devices belonging to the category of telematic (or if you like telemetric) security systems with tag authorization.

Among modern security systems, the control of which is due to the presence of a tag that can easily fit in the driver's wallet, but at the same time has a highly effective option for protecting the code, as well as equipped with a GSM modem for transmitting notification and control information, we have chosen the following devices:

Authorization

Let's start with the authorization method. Today, one of the most convenient methods for controlling a car security device is a tag. The tag provides the car owner with the opportunity to identify themselves without any gestures, it is enough to have a tag within the range of the system, simply put, to carry it in your pocket. Each device uses a conversational code with individual encryption keys, the key length is from 128 to 256 bits. Encryption algorithms in the tested systems differ, but each is crypto-resistant and up-to-date at the current time (not subject to electronic hacking).

The Pandora tag, unlike other products, has a button with which you can actively control the system, in the absence of a dialogue exchange (with the engine running during start-up), to open the central lock. The rest of the listed systems have the possibility of an active radio channel during autorun. The algorithms of the radio channel of the Pandora and AVTOLIS systems are able to implement the "soft landing" mode, which provides control of the car's central lock when approaching with a mark. In these systems, there is an algorithm for determining the range of the tag, based on the logic of processing the signal power received from the tag. Super Agent and Ghost have a "hands-free" mode only in autorun mode, to be able to control the central lock, which on most cars is not controlled from the standard remote control at the time the engine is running.

As a secondary stage of authorization, control from additional or standard car buttons is used - a set of combinations of clicks after entering the car interior. The Ghost and Pandora do this from the regular steering wheel buttons, the latter is slightly limited in its capabilities, because. there is no activation of the digital lock and there is no synchronization with autorun. The Avtolis system has the possibility of additional authorization from analog standard buttons, or buttons connected via an external CAN adapter, or from a code switch.

Label sizes

We measured the size of the mark according to the largest indicator, i.e. the mark was measured by length, thickness and width in the thickest place.

Label consumption

Despite the fact that manufacturers declare the specified battery life, the exact data will depend on the intensity of the tag usage, because in the dialogue mode the consumption increases, and the usage intensity of the tag is different for all users.

Power and battery consumption labels. Here you can analyze very conditionally, because. it is quite difficult to compare in reality during the operation of various systems - it all depends on the intensity of use. Batteries are used everywhere standard, CR standard, with approximately the same discharge current rating of 0.2 mA, but with different capacities (cell capacity: Autolis CR2430 - 290 mAh; Pandora CR2032 - 225 mAh; Ghost CR2025 - 160 mAh; Super Agent CR2016 - 90 mAh , but the discharge current in it is 2 times less than in others = 0.1 mA. Wiki data).

The graph shows the behavior of the tag away from the device, i.e. no dialogue mode. The upper graph shows the transmission of a radio signal (data was taken using a detector head) - a periodic transmission occurs, consisting of two packets within 0.755 ms. The lower graph shows the voltage drop across the tag's battery (the data was taken through the voltage drop across the resistor connected in series to the battery. Measuring equipment L-card E14-140M). It can be seen from the consumption that after the transmission packet, the tag receiver is turned on to listen to the air for a response from the head unit.

The graphs show the emission period of the AUTOLIS tag, which is equal to 1 second and the consumption of the tag in "sleep mode" - 1.75 μA.

The Pandora tag transmits 4 packets with a duration of 5.67 ms, with a packet learning period of 2.86 seconds. In sleep mode, the tag consumes 4.5 µA. The graph shows that after each message, the receiver is turned on to listen to the air for feedback (dialogue) from the main device.

An interesting observation on the Pandora label - between transmissions, the label turns on for 20 μs with a period of 114 ms, we did not catch the essence of this inclusion and assume that this is one of the reasons for the high consumption of the label. On the second graph, for example, take one pulse - the duration of the inclusions in the intervals between transmissions.

PRIZRAK 840:

The ghost tag works for reception, it is interrogated by the main unit after disarming the standard alarm (status from CAN). The transceiver chip is used by TI CC2500. The current consumption of the tag when the receiver is turned on is 20 mA for 0.32 ms. The receiver turn-on period is 1s. The current consumption in the pauses between switching on the receiver is 1 μA. The first graph shows how the receiver is turned on by the consumption.

When transmitted, the label gives 3 packets with a duration of 0.7 ms within 5.6 ms (see graph above). Current consumption during packet transmission 22mA. Within a second before the start of transmission, the label is turned on with a period of 8.5 ms, and reception is also turned on before each packet is transmitted.

The Super Agent tag emits 2 packets with a period of 2 seconds. Each packet is transmitted for 120 μs, with a 340 μs pause between packets. In each package, the consumption reaches up to 13 mA; in sleep mode, the consumption of the tag is 5 μA.

Conclusions:

Considering the algorithms of the tags (turning on receivers, transmitters and the period of their work), we can conclude that the battery in Autolis and Ghost will last longer than the others. The most capacious battery is used in Autolis, and the original solution of the dialogue exchange is used in the Ghost, where the first dialogue is started not by the label, but by the system. Therefore, the Ghost mark has a periodic inclusion of only the receiver, without turning on the transmitter, which can save energy to a large extent, although the size of the Ghost mark is one of the smallest and the battery capacity is much less than in Autolis and Pandora. If we talk about storing the tag, then the Super Agent tag is a more convenient option, it is the smallest of the tested ones, for example, it will be placed more ergonomically in documents, but in terms of battery life, it will clearly yield to the Autolis tag. For understanding - based on the average intensity of use, the Super Agent tag, taking into account the use of a new high-quality battery, will work for about 10 months.

A full-fledged "hands-free" mode can be organized by the authorization system of Avtolis and Pandora. Whereas the control of door blockers, safe locks or the radio channel of a regular access system can be organized by everyone except the Super Agent. The ban on the control of a regular radio channel is a fairly common and popular function among professional services recently, but it only partially solves the security issue - protecting from a repeater, but not providing protection from impact on a regular driver's door lock cylinder or CAN bus.

Secondary authorization elements can significantly increase the security functions of the system, but at the same time oblige the motorist to perform additional actions by pressing standard or optionally installed buttons in the car. On this score, the opinions of professionals are divided - some are sure that it is better to tie an additional identification method (if used) to an independent device, others are sure that the anti-theft potential of current products will completely cope with the main threats. Of the tested systems, the Phantom copes with this task best of all, since TEC specialists have been successfully working with the CAN bus for a long time, therefore, the list of coverage of regular car buttons (including the steering keys on the Germans) is presented by him. In second place in terms of additional initialization is Avtolis (it does not have the ability to independently work with the CAN bus, but the algorithm for interacting with external analog authorization is quite advanced - setting the operation of inputs by events) with digital blocking components that are part of the product. On the third Pandora - she is able to interact with the standard electrical systems of the car via CAN and by analogy, but without synchronization with autorun and digital blocking relay. The Super Agent for secondary authorization remains in the last position, although the tag polling algorithm is tied to the standard signaling status read by the Agent from the CAN bus, which today provides a completely sufficient way to recognize the owner.

The main disadvantage of car alarms with feedback is the limited radius of this connection. This was the result of several reasons:

  1. Legislative restrictions on the power of unlicensed transmitters;
  2. Requirements for the cost-effectiveness of the consumption of the car battery and key fobs batteries;
  3. Congestion of the city air with interference, and in the main share - from other signaling.

An auto electrician-diagnostician, a certified StarLine specialist, works on the site. If you have questions about car alarms, ask them at the end of the article in the comments or Vkontakte. When contacting, indicate the make of the car and the model of the alarm.

GSM board functions

It is not uncommon for a car standing on the other side of the house to be already. Therefore, the use of the GSM-channel, in the coverage area of cellular communication, which makes it possible to contact the car at any distance, has become a logical step in the development of security systems. Regardless of the distance, when an alarm occurs, the owner will receive a call and SMS notification, in the same way, all alarm features can be controlled, including auto start.

They support the installation of GSM modules in the form of expansion boards in the main signaling unit. It is noteworthy that they are immediately integrated with a GPS / GLONASS signal receiver, and when an external antenna is connected, they determine the coordinates of the machine with high accuracy. The procedure for installing and configuring the module, thanks to the common platform, is the same for everyone, so let's look at the StarLine A93 signaling as an example.

Although it is also sold in trim levels where the GSM module is installed and registered initially, sometimes the owners save on the bundle, and in the future they want to improve the alarm system. In this case, there are problems that need to be dealt with.

Installing the GSM module in the alarm system

The GSM module itself is a compact board that has a slot for a SIM card. This card is already included, but its tariff plan is not always suitable for the user, so it is worth buying a card in your region with a favorable rate for SMS and Internet traffic.

After installing the SIM card, we remove the central alarm unit and remove the cover from it - if the car alarm is installed professionally, this will be a laborious stage of work. Be sure to disconnect the connectors from the central unit - you can not connect expansion boards while the unit is energized.

Having assembled the case and returned the alarm to its place, we proceed to the setup.

Setting the alarm after setting the remote control

When setting up, try to configure an unregistered module: although Starline A93 will “see” it at the moment the power is turned on, it will not give full functionality - for example, it will be impossible to control the alarm. This is necessary to protect against the substitution of the module or SIM card by the hijacker, if the car uses wireless locks that it has not detected: replacing the module will still leave the car immobilized.

First, we must prescribe a new module: with the ignition off, press the Valet button seven times, after which we turn on the ignition. At the same time, the polling of new modules and their registration in the alarm memory will automatically turn on, after which the satellite icon will appear on the keyfob screen, confirming that the alarm telematics functions are configured.

Next, we proceed to configure the module. Use the voice interface - take the phone that is used as M1 (that is, as the phone with the highest priority in management and notifications), and call the number of the SIM card installed in the alarm. If the card is operational and the module is registered, then the voice control menu should be activated.

After the greeting, set two four-digit passwords - PW and PS. After that, the phone number from which the call was made will automatically be registered as M1, and a confirmation SMS will be sent to it. These passwords are needed for:

1. PW - sending commands from numbers registered as M2 and beyond, that is, not from the owner's main number.
2. PS allows you to set a new M1 number if you decide to change it.

If you connected an external GPS / GLONASS antenna to the alarm (we strongly recommend doing this, as the accuracy of determining the vehicle's coordinates will increase significantly), then activate satellite geopositioning by sending SMS with the code 00492 to the alarm. If this is not done, then even if connected antenna, the coordinates are determined only by stations of the cellular network!

However, SMS and voice control are not as convenient as mobile applications and the StarLine Internet portal. Therefore, let's continue registration - use the login and password that are written on the card included in the kit, but it's much more convenient (and safer!) to create your account.

Registration on the portal

Registration on starline-online.ru is required to access the alarm both from a PC and from a mobile application. In addition, you will evaluate the functionality in advance using the "Demo login" button on the site or in the application.
So, after clicking on the "Register" button, enter your e-mail, create a password and check the box "I know the SIM card number of my device." After receiving a confirmation e-mail, click on the link, and the user's personal account will immediately open in the browser.

By clicking on "Add a device", we will begin the registration procedure. At the first stage, we set the device type (in our case, this is a GSM module).

It remains to set the name of the device, enter the SIM card number and send SMS with the code 00581 to it from the phone previously set as M1. Having received the code, enter it into the form, and after clicking on “Continue”, the device is registered on the portal.

StarLine M31out of production *Implementation of autostart from 2,500 rubles.

StarLine M31 is a miniature GSM-module with which you can control various security and service functions via a mobile phone: determine the location of the vehicle, start the engine, receive data on the battery charge and listen to what is happening inside the cabin.

The module can work as a stand-alone device, or in conjunction with car alarms from virtually any manufacturer. Management is carried out using: a special mobile application (on the iOs and Android platform), SMS messages and a call. The instrument supports over 50 different commands. Specially developed software saves battery power.

Main features of the StarLine M31 module

For normal operation of the device, any SIM-cards of GSM-operators are suitable. Notifications are delivered to pre-programmed phone numbers (up to 4). For each number, personal notification settings are set: call, SMS, call and SMS, etc.

When an alarm is triggered, the module instantly sends an alert to the owner with detailed information about the event: opening a door, hood or trunk, disabling the handbrake, triggering a shock sensor, and so on. It is possible to program additional channels for activation in automatic mode in case of any event: listening to the cabin, turning on the alarm, and others.

If the module is used autonomously, then with the help of three special channels, limit switches for the hood, doors or trunk can be connected to it. Each channel has an individual programmable alert mode. At the slightest fixation of a violation, an alert is instantly sent to the owner.

In case of an attempt to steal a vehicle, a command to stop the engine can be sent to the module. Also, to increase the level of security, it is possible to set a prohibition of control from any numbers, with the exception of the phone number of the owner of the car.

The built-in GPS-receiver will help you find out the exact geographic coordinates of the vehicle: upon request, an SMS message with the coordinates and a link to the gmap.ultrastar.ru website will be sent to the owner’s phone number, where the exact location of your car will be indicated on a detailed map.

If you want to listen to what is happening in the interior of your car, then you can use the built-in microphone, the sensitivity of which is adjustable by phone.

Implementation of autostart without signaling

StarLine M31 can be used for implementation by a command from the phone, according to a schedule with a certain frequency, by an alarm clock or by temperature. The module also implements the function of controlling modern pre-heaters () via the W-BUS bus.

Additional Information

StarLine M31 allows remote control of additional equipment: automatic engine start (according to schedule or temperature), starting preheaters, battery charge control, etc.

The device perfectly resists vibrations, various shocks, dirt, high humidity, and will also work smoothly in the temperature range from -45°C to +85°C. You can install StarLine M31 qualitatively and quickly in a specialized center.

You can easily turn an already installed alarm system into a security and telematics complex with the help of the StarLine GSM module with your own hands. Together with Andrey Maslov, a Starline specialist, we will analyze in detail the installation of the STARLINE GSM-Master GSM module using the example of a Mitsubishi Lancer car with a StarLine E90 alarm installed.

STARLINE GSM-Master kits are designed for new generation StarLine security systems with flexible architecture: StarLine E60/E90/A64/A94/B64/B94/D64. The StarLine telematics modules included in the kit allow you to control the car's security from anywhere in the world using a web page, a mobile phone and a free StarLine Telematics mobile application for smartphones based on iOS and Android.

This not only seriously complicates the work of car thieves, but also makes it convenient to obtain information.

StarLine car alarms, equipped with a GSM/GPS module, not only make life difficult for car thieves and give confidence to the car owner. The use of GSM / GPS modules allows you to create an effective security and search complex. When using such a complex, the owner gets the opportunity not only to determine the location of his car, but also to control the car alarm, as well as receive messages about the intrusion into the car with virtually no distance limit - wherever mobile operators operate.

Transmission of data and control commands in security telematics systems equipped with StarLine GSM modules takes place via a GSM communication channel. Information about the state of the car, the operation of security sensors and other data is sent to the owner's phone in the form of a voice notification or in the form of SMS messages. The owner can choose the type of notification by programming.

So, let's proceed to the actual installation of the STARLINE GSM-Master GSM-module.

1. Disassembly of the dashboard.

To install the STARLINE GSM-Master GSM module, you need to remove the front panel to get to the alarm unit.

In Mitsubishi Lancer, for this you will have to remove the center console, the heater deflectors on the left, the lower panel shield and the dashboard itself.

The beginning of the disassembly of the Mitsubishi Lancer dashboard: remove the decorative trim.

Now you need to remove the radio cover. This is necessary in order to remove the central panel - in Mitsubishi Lancer it is fixed on all sides with a lining.

After removing the center panel, you need to remove the instrument panel trim. To do this, in Mitsubishi Lancer, you must first remove the heater deflector.

To finally remove the instrument panel trim on the Mitsubishi Lancer, you must disconnect the INFO button connector.

Now you can unscrew the instrument panel: in Mitsubishi Lancer, it rests on three screws. After removing the instrument panel, disconnect the connectors and remove it.

Now the Starline signaling unit is available. We take out all the connectors and go to the desktop, where we install the GSM module in it.

Having untwisted the alarm unit - for this you only need a screwdriver - we open the Starline alarm unit. We take out the central board of the Starline signaling unit. After that, we unpack the StarLine GSM module itself and install it in a special groove on the central board of the alarm unit. The GSM-module is easily inserted into the central board - all installation places are marked on the central board, and it is simply impossible to put it in any other (wrong) way. Additionally, to facilitate installation, the installation diagram of the GSM module is drawn on the StarLine signaling board itself.

Now you need to install the SIM card supplied in the kit into the Starline GSM module board.

Installation of the GSM-module is completed, you can proceed to reassembly. This is also a simple process: the removed board can be put into the block in one single, correct way, so errors are excluded.

Now, in reverse order, you need to connect the Starline alarm unit back to the connectors and install it in place. After that, you can assemble the front panel in the reverse order, remembering to reconnect all the connectors and leaving the programming button available for programming the system after installing the GSM module.

To program the system, you need to press the programming button seven times, then turn on the ignition and wait until the alarm exits the programming mode on its own. From this moment, the StarLine GSM module is registered in the alarm, and if the hijacker gets to the alarm unit and puts his GSM module, it will still be impossible to disarm the system.

At the same time, the “satellite” icon will appear on the StarLine alarm key fob - an indication that a GSM / GPS device is installed in the alarm system.

After that, you need to configure the alarm operation by direct call to the SIM card of the module. The system should request a password - "password 1" and "password 2". When the passwords are entered, the system will automatically send a message indicating that the StarLine security and telematics complex has started working in full.

Now the StarLine security and telematics complex can be controlled both from a mobile phone, a web page, and using the StarLine Telematics mobile application.

The total installation time of the GSM module by professional alarm installers is 20 minutes.

The STARLINE GSM-Master GSM-module was installed on a Mitsubishi Lancer car with a pre-installed StarLine E90 alarm system by Andrey Maslov, a STARLINE specialist.

TOY OR NOT?

They say that an intelligent person is one who can describe Angelina Jolie without waving his hands in the air.

Does not work? It is equally difficult to briefly explain what telematics is. The student will say that this is telecommunications plus computer science. But everything becomes clearer if you remember that automotive telematics is the daughter (or granddaughter?) of anti-theft. So, telematics is a kind of sophisticated anti-theft. A kind of "iPhone" next to a regular phone.

Do you personally need telematics? Again, remember about the "iPhone". If it’s enough for you to just talk or exchange text messages, then you don’t need it. But if you want to flip through screen pages with your finger, rummage through the Internet, use navigation, take pictures and listen to music at the same time, then an ordinary phone will definitely not be enough for these purposes.

The same applies to telematics. More precisely, to telematic security systems - the latest innovations in the anti-theft world are called so. And if you want this very security to provide navigation, remote diagnostics, multimedia functions, communication and something else of that kind at the same time, then the novelty is for you.

Where to attribute all this - to toys or to something useful?

Suppose a person close to you has broken down somewhere far from home and asks for help. But he can’t really explain where he drove in: what kind of highway is this and where are the kilometer posts - no idea ... But you will instantly orient yourself by looking at the screen of any suitable gadget familiar with the Internet. The machine itself reports its coordinates via the GPRS channel, determined by GPS and GLONASS.

The same is true for prevention. The telematics complex can connect to the CAN bus, constantly collecting a database of all the nuances of the car's behavior on the road. In the event of an accident, information will be needed by car insurers and the traffic police - you can always find out whether the turn signal was on at the time of the accident, how the acceleration changed, from what moment the driver slowed down. The machine sends all such information to the server of the telematics complex manufacturer, and from there it is sent to interested parties connected to the system - ideally, these are dealers, insurers, the traffic police, an ambulance. Telematics can establish the fact of an accident on its own: the built-in accelerometer will record exorbitant values upon impact. In any case, the coordinates of the incident will be known exactly.

BLACK BOX

How does it all work? Roughly speaking, a telematics complex is a "black box" type box plus an online service. The black box is a kind of brain of telematics, and the online service is its language and ears. The brain is constantly collecting information that is available to it, and the language conveys it to interested parties. The ears, in turn, communicate the wishes of the owner to the brain.

Technically, it is provided like this. In the mentioned "box" a SIM card is installed, which ensures the exchange of information over the Network in a variety of ways - from SMS and data transmission via the GPRS channel to voice communication. At the same time, you must also have access to the Web - the best option is a smartphone with an Android or iOS operating system. There is no need to speak: commands are given by pressing buttons. The developers claim that it is much more difficult to fake such a connection in a GSM network than to replace SMS.

It is clear that during the absence of a cellular network, the ability to communicate with the car disappears - only regular key fobs remain. But notifications are recorded in the device memory and transmitted to the recipient when the network connection is restored.

Speaking of keychains. A side effect of the advent of telematics is their impending extinction. Who will need them when the same smartphone has already become almost an essential item? And he has more opportunities, to put it mildly. And the screen is prettier. Everything is clear with the range: even being somewhere in Cape Town or Canberra, you will always know what is happening with your car. No double-sided key fob can do this.

Of course, I do not want to send data from my car to just anyone. For this case, a “Personal Account” was invented with a bunch of settings. On the other hand, the organization concerned, be it a car dealership, a representative office of a car manufacturer or the traffic police, are also users of the telematics portal, and in their settings they indicate what information they want to receive from users. Portal settings allow you to flexibly configure the content of information and the list of its recipients. The nuances are determined by the specific brand of the developer. For example, a car dealership that sold a car to a user is interested in promptly inviting him for maintenance and uses the Service Reminder service. The responsible manager of the car dealership receives notifications to his e-mail when the mileage of cars is approaching the coveted value or the maintenance period is approaching in time. Insurance companies will also find interesting information: their employees can find out the current mileage of the car on a special page of the portal.

Financial matters are determined by the specific developer. As a rule, there is no subscription fee. The user pays only traffic to the cellular operator. The package of the purchased device includes a SIM card from one of the Big Three operators. The cost of using depends on the type of traffic: the cheapest is GPRS (Internet), a little more expensive - calls and SMS. Typically, the cost of traffic does not exceed 100 rubles per month.

At the same time, the user is free to choose an operator - just change the SIM card. It can be said that the telematics market is not new, since businesses have long used telematics to control fuel consumption and the route of vehicles. What is new is the appearance in telematics of feedback for controlling the security system and traditional security capabilities.

A SPOON OF TAR

Is there any real benefit to all of this? Yes, definitely. I will say more: I think there will be no other "Okhranoks" soon! Try to find a phone without a camera on the market today - there are practically none. So it is here: telematics will gradually become something familiar. Like a smartphone in the hands of a schoolboy.

Now about the fly in the ointment.

If the phone is intended exclusively for conversations, then the iPhone has this function of secondary importance - in the foreground are all kinds of entertainment and useful things. The same, in my opinion, applies to telematics: the protection of the car from theft has become something unimportant. Moreover, there are problems that, it seems to me, are already making themselves felt.

It's about safety, for the sake of which everything was started. The same smartphone that learned to take photos became too smart, having mastered the option of automatically backing up data to the “cloud”. And the user simply cannot erase this data. I think this is a gift for a hacker. And if the same “cloud” appears in cars? Would you be happy to think that someone could somehow use all this? Manufacturers say it's impossible, but I don't really believe it. And more and more information appears on the Web about how hackers force other people's machines to obey their commands - something like in Terminator 3. So everything is possible!

We dig further. Smart telematics is able, if necessary, to send me with the car to the nearest service, where we will be quickly repaired, refueled and tweaked. Very good, but something tells you: not every service, store or gas station will be included in the corresponding list. In other words, I will definitely be manipulated. It is unpleasant.

There is no telematics on my car today. What will happen tomorrow, I do not know. Maybe everything will happen as if by itself and telematics will become something banal and familiar. Like films with Angelina Jolie.
