Elantra 2 generations. Hyundai Elantra VI sedan

Elantra 2 generations. Hyundai Elantra VI sedan

Hyundai Elantra is a front-wheel-drive golf-class sedan (according to European classification), which combines: elegant design, European-style solid interior, modern technical “stuffing” and a good level of equipment ... It is aimed at a wide target audience - and young people , and for couples (including those with children), and for people aged ...

The sixth incarnation of the Hyundai Elantra compact sedan (the brand's global bestseller) celebrated its international debut in November 2015 on the catwalks of the Los Angeles Auto Show, but first appeared to the public on September 9 during a special event at the South Korean research complex in Namyang under the name Avante.

With the change of generation, the three-volume vehicle parted with the “too whimsical” design, added in size, received a new interior, became more technically perfect and acquired options that were previously inaccessible. At home, the car went on sale immediately after the premiere, and it “reached” Russian buyers only in June 2016.

In August 2018, the North American division of the South Korean manufacturer revealed to the world community a sedan that went through a thorough restyling (and the scale of the changes really turned out to be impressive), - it was redesigned beyond recognition, made noticeable changes to the interior and expanded the list of available equipment, but left the technical component.

Outside, the sixth "release" Hyundai Elantra impresses with a beautiful, assertive and strict design, and its appearance harmoniously combines fashionable edges with soft body shapes.

The front of the four-door attracts attention with an aggressive “look” of triangular lighting technology with sharp lines and an intricate “polygon” of the grille, and its feed flaunts spectacular lights with LED “lightning” and a “faceted” bumper.

In profile, the “Korean” evokes associations with “four-door coupes” due to deliberately dynamic outlines with a short sloping “nose”, a sloping roof and a small “tail” of the trunk.

The 6th generation Elantra is in the popular C class according to the European classification: 4570 mm long, 1450 mm high and 1800 mm wide. The wheelbase of the four-door fits into 2700 mm, and the clearance under its “belly” (clearance) does not exceed 150 mm.

Inside the “sixth” Hyundai Elantra, European restraint reigns and Asian pretentiousness is completely absent, which makes the interior look attractive, but slightly featureless.

Behind the multifunctional “steering wheel” there is a nice and informative instrument cluster with two dials and a trip computer “window” (“top” versions have more elegant “SuperVision” “toolkit”).

The center console, facing seven degrees to the driver, is crowned with an 8-inch screen of a multimedia complex and a stylish “climate” unit (only in the “base” everything is much more prosaic - a plastic plug and air conditioning).

"Korean" is able to boast of good-quality finishing materials, but still does not particularly appeal to their quality.

The front seats in the Elantra's cabin are undoubtedly comfortable - comfortable seats are endowed with a successful profile with good lateral support and decent adjustment ranges. Three people can easily fit on the back sofa, but if they don’t feel a lack of space in their legs and in width, then their heads can rest against the roof slope.

The volume of the luggage compartment of the Hyundai Elantra is 458 liters (according to the VDA method). The back of the rear sofa is folded in two parts, allowing you to transport long items, but the “hold” itself is devoid of both hooks for packages and rigging loops. Under the raised floor - a full "reserve" and a set of tools.

For the Russian market, the sixth generation Elantra is equipped with two naturally aspirated gasoline engines with a four-cylinder configuration, a 16-valve DOHC timing belt and distributed injection technology, which are adapted to the Euro-5 environmental standard. Each of the motors is by default accompanied by a 6-speed "manual" box and front-wheel drive transmission, and for a fee it is offered in tandem with a 6-band "automatic".

  • The basic versions of the Korean sedan are based on an all-aluminum “four” of the Gamma family with a volume of 1.6 liters (1591 cubic centimeters) with a timing chain that generates 128 horsepower at 6300 rpm and 155 Nm of peak torque at 4850 rpm.
With such a “heart” for a spurt to the first “hundred”, the car spends 10.1-11.6 seconds and accelerates to 195-200 km / h as much as possible (in both cases in favor of the “mechanics”), and in the combined driving cycle it consumes no more than 6.6-6.9 liters of fuel depending on the version.
  • For the "top" versions of the sixth "release" Hyundai Elantra, a 2.0-liter power unit (1999 cubic centimeters) is provided, which has an aluminum cast crankcase and block head, and a gas distribution mechanism with exhaust and intake phase shifters. Its return is 150 “mares” at 6200 rpm and 192 Nm of torque at 4500 rpm.
The first 100 km/h is conquered by such a three-volume vehicle after 8.8-9.9 seconds, the limit of its capabilities falls at 202-205 km/h, and the average gas mileage does not go beyond 7.1-7.2 liters in the city/highway mode.

"Elantra" of the sixth incarnation is based on a seriously upgraded front-wheel drive platform from its predecessor. The body structure of the car is 53% high-strength steel, and the aerodynamically balanced design and carefully crafted bottom provide one of the best drag coefficient Cx in the class - 0.27.

An independent suspension with MacPherson struts and a transverse stabilizer is used on the front axle of the sedan, and a semi-independent torsion beam with shock absorbers and springs is used in the rear. The steering complex on the “Korean” is represented by a rack and pinion and an electric power steering, and its braking system is formed by disk devices in front and behind (ventilated in the first case) with a diameter of 280 mm and 262 mm, respectively, and a set of modern systems.

The sixth generation restyled Hyundai Elantra is offered on the Russian market in four equipment options - "Start", "Base", "Active" and "Elegance".

The car in the basic configuration is equipped exclusively with a 1.6-liter engine and “mechanics”, and its cost starts at 1,049,000 rubles. By default, the four-door boasts: two airbags, air conditioning, ABS, ESP, heated front seats, four power windows, heated and power mirrors, 15-inch steel wheels, a cruise, an audio system with four speakers, ERA-GLONASS technology and a small spare tire .

The Base sedan costs from 1,120,000 rubles for a version with a 6-speed manual transmission, and the surcharge for a 6-speed automatic transmission is 35,000 rubles. A more powerful unit with 149 hp. it is installed with the Active modification at a price of 1,220,000 rubles, and the most “fancy” equipment (only with a 2.0-liter engine and an “automatic”) will cost from 1,315,000 rubles.

The "top" version of the three-volume vehicle has in its arsenal: seven airbags, light and rain sensors, dual-zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors, heated seats and steering wheel, 16-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, a media center with a 7-inch screen , electric folding mirrors, full-size spare wheel and other equipment.

The car is simply gorgeous, though if you give a firebox, it unfortunately eats oil, but I have a mileage and plans to replace the rings, but for the car: how I bought it changed the oil to my native shell helix ultra 5w40 (the reason lies in the fact that other oils for some reason coke in this engine, magic is no different), immediately opened the sub-valve cover to check the chain on the timing pulleys, plus the valves knocked a little, and the engine ate oil, and did not eat it, namely, it ate, the reason is oil! Because coking suffer and valves, and oil scraper rings, and caps, replaced the timing (left only the pulleys and valves themselves old) the rest of everything for replacement in the service gave 8 thousand for work (oil change, timing, oil seals), spare parts in 11500, to be honest the car is generally the first in my hands, so only in the army I rode a siber 2.4 on the Volga, and the Ford Mondeo 3 manual transmission, and the Mondeo 4 automatic transmission, both are also 2.0, they all smoke aside, except that the Mondeo 4 is better in terms of noise. Now about the automatic transmission, the box here is f4a42, the Mitsubishi box that has gone through as many as 5 modifications, we have the same box with the BETA signature, yes, yes, it’s the beta version, honestly this box is just like a pig in a poke) The bottom line is that the main thing is not to got along well, be sure to pit the car and check the seams, there was no sealant in them there were rubber gaskets (you won’t find it now, because in auto repair shops they put sealant on it if they open it), the box is very picky (if you like to drive fast, then first be disappointed ) the brains are so stupid, you will drive slowly and eat gasoline as you give the firebox, roll the machine for a fast ride (10-15 thousand rolls, that's why I say disappointment at first the kicks will be small, then they will disappear, because it will start switching gears faster in time, plus I have at first 130 km at 4 speeds it was 4-4.200 thousand rpm, now it’s 2.700-3.000 when it starts looking for the optimal rpm, the rpm will float, don’t panic, which means you still have about 5 thousand mileage left and everything will be fine). Always check the oil, it should be clear!!! If it becomes cloudy or changes color from red to orange immediately in the service! The box is expensive to maintain, one planetary gear is 16 thousand, plus all sorts of rubber bands that go only to Rem. A kit that also costs more than 10 thousand, so consider 26 thousand, this is what will suffer if you do not change the clutches and seals in the box in time, plus the work is about 25-30 thousand, but change the seals, flush the valve body and clutches, change 20 thousand is all a pleasure, so don't delay! Whoever gets into the throttle valve, don’t think about it, it’s better to change the filters (we have two of them !!!), one is under the bumper, where the left wheel is, the other is next to the engine, both are the same change as soon as you buy a car, then there will be no problems. In general, the car is good; I don’t know how to kill them ... 6 people got into my car each 80-90 kg the car sank a little) the dynamics if you roll it like me then the pedal is pressed by 20-25% on the highway the car will accelerate to 160 easily and will pick up speed though it’s already a little tightness if you press 30-40%, then 200 rushes calmly, I have r16 wheels et 45 4x114.3 offset 6.5 and tires 205/50 (I tried 205/55 at speed, the car throws the same way as on r15 wheels 195/65, use 195/60 the car just floats), take it, you won’t regret it, I won’t sell my car and after five years even, nimble, economical (city 10-12, highway 6-7, after rolling the machine, before that I ate a lot only with a quiet ride indicators were slightly higher than these, maybe a liter and a half more than these), roomy and spacious, for 2002 there are all the gadgets including condo, the car is a fairy tale

In all this, it reminded me of fishing, when you equipped yourself with crucian carp, and in some unthinkable way you had a long pike on your hook ... And what, tell me, is the C-class, and in general, does the new Elantra look like a sedan? Coupe, perhaps a liftback, but not a sedan in the classical sense.

Special cut

If we turn to the numbers, the wheelbase of the “Korean” at 2,700 mm turned out to be even larger than that of the leader of the already nascent C + class Skoda Octavia A7 with its 2,686 mm. But it was the same in the past, fifth generation Hyundai Elantra, which hardly claimed design excellence. Moreover, the novelty added only 40 mm in length compared to its predecessor, up to 4,570 mm, in height and width of 5 mm to 1,450 and 1,800 mm, respectively. Where, then, did the radically different perception of the car come from?

It was as if the nozzle of an automatic hair dryer from a nearby car wash had passed over him. He dried and smoothed the aerodynamic profile, stretching the rear window almost to the edge of the trunk, turning an ordinary, automobile creature into a bright individual. Even excessively bright, given the color of ripe raspberries.

All other rock-forming details, including the sweeping boomerangs of the compartments in the bumper for fog lights and the hexagonal radiator grille in the style of the company's new corporate trend, without any allegories, can be attributed to the merits of the team of Peter Schreyer and the recently joined former Bentley chief designer Luke Donkerwolke. Well, how can one do without the European iF Design Award 2016 with such names?

Judging by it, and believing their own eyes, Hyundai has taken a very pragmatic approach to the exterior of the Elantra. Even the most modest of the four configurations will not spoil it. Matte silver finish on the grille instead of chrome, 15-inch stamped wheels instead of casting 17”, “halogens” in place of xenon or barred “eyeless boomerangs” do not change the overall picture. In our top version of Comfort, weighted with Style and High-Tech packages for 80 and 70 thousand rubles, you can’t find fault with the appearance at all, to say the least ...

Paradoxes of comfort

Not a single car in the C segment and even C + did not meet me when approaching with illuminated door handles and mirrors turned into working position. Further - cooler: the locks are unlocked - you are welcome to the salon. Having flopped into a chair covered in black perforated leather and well profiled, I hasten to press the “Start” button.

The seat smoothly brings me to the steering wheel and freezes in the position set by someone earlier.

from 1 199 900 rubles

This is no longer “However ...”, but “Wow!” The simplest sedan in which I last observed such a function was far from being in the basic configuration. Maybe something was mixed up in Hyundai, or is it a special, test version with an electric drive and dual-channel memory for the driver's seat? Not at all! The bells and whistles with the seat, which, after the engine stops, will also drive back, are included in the optional package. However, the visible frills end there.

Due to its brevity and minimalism, the Elantra's interior resembles that offered by many cars of the Volkswagen clan, in particular, the Skoda Octavia mentioned above. As in it, the enviable space in the cabin is almost irrelevant to the overall dimensions. The secret, apart from the long wheelbase, is the minimal thickness of the door trim and the short front fascia.

Putting your elbow on the windowsill will hardly work. He just doesn’t reach him, and it’s not very pleasant to pave his hand on hard plastic, except to open the window completely.

You can, of course, use the door handle, but it houses the power window buttons, door locks and mirror controls, and this is inconvenient. By the way, because of the mentioned thinness of the door trim, the pockets for small things and the bottle compartment came out quite modest. Half a liter, don't dream of more.

But the feeling of a new apartment, not cluttered with unnecessary furniture, is much more expensive: even the smells are similar, only a little sharper, plastic. The branded air purification system, which, of course, is in the car, is not an assistant here, but open windows do their job, and the passengers, who are lounging imposingly on the second row, do not seem to sniff.

They are really comfortable there, primarily because of the legroom, which is really a lot. And also because the floor in the Elantra is flat, without a hint of a central tunnel (fortunately, all-wheel drive versions are not expected), and the seat cushions are located quite low. Three places, no reservations for love of baking and growth. And the same number of suitcases will settle down or become in a 458-liter trunk. Not Cabin Size, but real, full-weight ones, which even a full-fledged “reserve” in a niche under the floor will not interfere with.

And yet 2.0...

But no one will see this, and attention will be paid to the appearance of the Elantra and the ease with which it rides. Yes, the 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol is only available in the top Comfort trim. With a six-speed manual gearbox for 1,154,900 rubles. or with automatic transmission for 1,199,900 rubles. - not so important. It should be remembered that only the 149-horsepower Nu 2.0 motor with two phase shifters (as evidenced by the proud D-CVVT nameplate) comes with all the options available in the Elantra's arsenal. That they are not superfluous, I have no doubts.

LED daytime running lights, xenon headlights, a light sensor, front parking sensors, cruise control, a heated steering wheel, a combined leather / substitute trim and a lot of small things, of course, will come in handy. True, 16” alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, a rain sensor, a CD-MP3 audio system with six speakers and fog lights can be obtained in a more modest version of the Active.

And if you shrink down to Base or even the initial Start for 899,900 rubles, you still won’t be deprived of such necessary things as ABS, ESP, EBD, HAC lift assist systems, a pair of airbags, a trip computer, tire pressure monitoring systems, steering wheel adjustment for tilt and reach and other small pleasures.

Only now they were initially attached to the MPI Gamma 1.6 engine with a capacity of 123 hp. With. (with the same D-CVVT), which does not make me very optimistic. It is well known from other models of the company and there is a suspicion that for a car with a sporty image, and with a curb weight of 1,390 kg, it will be rather weak. What about the MCP, what about the automatic transmission, available starting from Base. But there are definitely no complaints about the top-end “kopeck piece” with an “automatic”.

The light, aluminum NU engine, which is in the Hyundai rankings between Gamma and Theta II, fits the sedan so well that there is not the slightest desire to reflash the control unit in search of an extra dozen "bays", and indeed to climb under the hood.

Press the accelerator - and Elantra rides exactly the way you want. At very low speeds, the aspirated does not take out, but in the middle range, from 2,800 rpm, please, a very noticeable pickup. And all this with a far from transcendental torque of 192 Nm at 4,000 rpm and the absence of any special noise and vibration. This is how D-CVVT works, changing the valve timing depending on the speed. Without boost, you don't feel inferior.

Another package option is a push-button selection of driving modes from ECO to Sport. Note that this electronic algorithm does not add power, but it affects the dynamics and fuel consumption. Passport 9.9 s to “hundreds” with extended gears in Sport and crankshaft spin up to almost 6,000 rpm are quite similar to the truth even without measurements, and according to subjective sensations, Elantra accelerates even faster.

Hyundai Elantra 2.0 AT
Consumption per 100 km

In ECO, the opposite is true, the revolutions are minimal, and therefore they are not felt so sharply. In the city, it was possible not to “fall out” for 10.5 l / 100 km, even in the absence of too “vegetable” reactions to gas. On the track, having also resorted to the help of a “cruise”, you can stay within the limits of 6.7–7.0 liters per “hundred”. Everything seems to be fine, only the lack of smoothness of automatic transmission switching with the active use of the accelerator cannot be thrown out of the song. In any mode. Jerks are barely perceptible, but they prompted me to take a closer look at the Elantra ...

"Revizorro", out!

By and large, with the technique of the car, almost everything is “five”. In addition to the cool 2.0-liter engine and the “quick response machine”, it still holds the road very well.

There are no special tricks in the suspension - MacPherson struts in front and a semi-independent design in the back.

But the overall impression of the density and composure of the chassis, even on the verge of excessive rigidity, did not leave me for a minute.

Deliberately intense shifting of the steering wheel from side to side, and Elantra all at once. No buildup, let alone withdrawal from a given trajectory, even on asphalt with a comb. Not the last role in stability is played by the rigidity of the body, which in the novelty is almost entirely made of high-strength steel. But the fact that the tuners and closers pored over both the electric power steering and each silent block does not raise any doubts.

Why the designers of the front panel, in particular, the multimedia system, did not take an example from them, remains a mystery. God bless her, with blue-violet button illumination, which you get used to after a couple of hours. A shield with well-read analog instruments and an LCD information insert between them is also, by and large, suitable.

➕ Manageability

➕ Economy
➕ Ergonomics

The advantages and disadvantages of the Hyundai Elantra 2018-2019 in a new body are identified based on feedback from real owners. More detailed pros and cons of Hyundai Elantra 1.6 and 2.0 with mechanics and automatic can be found in the stories below:

Owner reviews

Leaving the passenger compartment, I noticed that there is a vibration at idle when the box is in D, but I sinned on low-quality gasoline. I thought now I’ll fill in 95 at Gazprom, and everything will be fine, as it was on Solaris (it never vibrated), but it wasn’t there ...

The first few days of ownership I really liked the car, after B class he rulitsya just with a bang! In terms of handling, even the Polo was not lying nearby. And in the cabin there was enough space for the child in the back row (I have a 10-month-old child, in Solaris with boots, sitting in a child seat, rested on the seat, the front passenger had to move the seat).

But in the future, I began to notice that my car jumps at a speed of 40 to 70, when you roll into tightness without gas. This annoyed me for two days, and I went for balancing, after this problem ceased to worry me, but the vibration did not disappear anywhere, and the mileage was already 300 km.

Pendant class! On a broken road, the new Elantra goes smoothly and holds the road perfectly on the highway. The look and feel are great! The headlights shine like spotlights. But all positive impressions were spoiled by vibrations.

Video review

Bought to ride in comfort (my first car was a VAZ 21144). Very pleased with the machine! The six-speed automatic works as a unit with the engine and adapts to your driving style (calm or aggressive).

Fuel consumption in the city with a calm driving style in the heat with the climate control on shows 7.3 liters per hundred. I refuel 95 gasoline, although the dealer says that it is not lower than 92. The engine, judging by the reviews, is not capricious about the quality of gasoline, since the usual 2.0-liter aspirated engine is not from the GDI line.

The new Hyundai Elantra 6 as a whole has good dynamics, which allows you to get far ahead in city traffic without even switching the manual transmission to manual mode. On the track, the car behaves very steadily, even with uneven undulating asphalt and speeds of more than 100 km / h due to the good aerodynamics of the body and the long wheelbase.

The salon is very comfortable. The seats are made of perforated leather, for passengers in the back row there is an air duct. When driving on rough roads, the cabin is quite quiet, but there is a slight noise from the wheel arches and extraneous noise from the glasses compartment (if they are there). The acoustics sound pretty decent.

Pavel drives a Hyundai Elantra 2.0 (149 HP) AT 2016

I got used to the machine immediately, I also immediately felt the dimensions. My fears of suspension disappointment turned out to be false. The Hyundai Elantra VI steers somehow smoother than the Polo, more imposing or something, at the same time the steering wheel is informative.

Dive into corners confidently at any speed. Pits swallows without problems, the car seems to be floating, and the suspension is very elastic, for two weeks there are no breakdowns and blows to the body at all, everything remains somewhere there). In short, I am very pleased with the suspension, for me it's just the golden mean: not hard and not too soft, there are no questions about control either.

Hodovka turned out to be almost the same as in Octavia (all the same, the information content in the steering wheel of Skoda is more), only at a more adequate price. Of the minuses, I can note the poor sound insulation of the wheel arches, I will make noise for anyone.

I also thought that 128 hp would not be enough for me, but for now it’s enough, probably because I’m still running the engine and I don’t twist more than 3,000 rpm. I'm afraid that a 1.6-liter engine will not be enough for confident overtaking on the track.

Roman, drives Hyundai Elantra 1.6 (128 hp) 2016

Bought in July, today is April. Well, what can I say, the car turned out not bad, it differs greatly from the previous Elantra. Even regardless of the shortcomings that I will describe, the car turned out to be decent, albeit a little expensive. In general, I like it!

The suspension has become excellent, eats up all the bumps and bumps. Great comfortable lounge. All buttons are at hand. With a dynamic ride, it feels like it works out the steering (this is at such a size). Excellent headlights. Good ground clearance.

Of the shortcomings, the most important is sound insulation, at high speeds, like in an airplane. The monitor is, of course, ergonomic, but more could be done. Loud engine at high speeds. The trunk hinges take up a lot of space when closing, something could enter there.

Ilya, drives a Hyundai Elantra 2.0 (150 hp) AT 2016

Where can I buy?

Most of all in the Elantra I liked the economy. In Eco and Normal modes, when driving on the Pacific Coast Highway, the consumption turned out to be about 6 liters per 100 km. The Pacific Coast Highway is no ordinary highway. A significant part of the route is mountain serpentines with ascents, descents and sharp turns. We made frequent photo stops. Therefore, 6 liters per hundred on such a track I think is just a cool indicator.

What I didn't like: Poor soundproofing. On smooth pavement, the cabin is relatively quiet. At idle, it's generally quiet - the engine is almost inaudible. But when the asphalt is rough and the speed is more than 60 km / h, the noise in the cabin goes off scale.

Review of Hyundai Elantra 2.0 with automatic 2016

First impressions: after the 1.4 AT Solaris hatchback, the new Elantra rides more cheerfully, but how much more cheerfully I’ll write later, since running in and all that, I tried not to go more than 4000 rpm, but it’s nice to overtake trucks.

Visibility in the side mirrors is better, salon - worse. I agree that the Elantra is noisy after 100 km / h, but again, what to compare with.

Leaving the salon with almost zero mileage, I got into an hour and a half traffic jam. Consumption showed 60-70 liters per 100 km by the end of the traffic jam! I thought something was wrong, I left the traffic jam, and it turned out that she thought it was somehow strange. Now the mileage is 225 km and the consumption is 7-10 liters.

The instrument panel is like a dashboard, I like the backlight, I am very pleased that there is an engine temperature scale (the “French” do not have it, I think that this is bad). There is also a brighter/darker adjustment. There is no color screen, although I do not need it.

Review of the Hyundai Elantra 2.0 (150 hp) on the machine in 2017

All generations of Hyundai Elantra

This page contains general information about all generations of the Hyundai Elantra, as well as the main links to detailed descriptions, specifications and photographs of each generation. Elantra generations are not encoded with body designations, but are called "generations". The general system for updating the model is as follows: on average, every 5 years a new generation comes out, in the middle of this period, facelift (restyling) can occur.

Hyundai numbered the first two generations of the Elantra as J1 and J2, adding "restyle" for intermediate versions. From the third generation, the model received a two-letter designation - XD. But for clarity and convenience, the so-called "J-numbering" continued in the club. Therefore, we designate the third generation as J3. The fourth generation received the HD manufacturer's index and the J4 club index. The fifth generation MD, respectively, received the internal designation J5.

In addition to the designation with the Latin letter "J", informal Russian transliteration is also actively used in the club's forum. For example, "J5" - J5 (fifth generation) or "J3" - J3 (third generation).

The general scheme of Elantra generations in notation looks like this:
J1 --> J1-restyle --> J2 --> J2-restyle --> J3 --> J3-restyle --> J4 --> J5 --> J5 restyling --> J6.
The following generations are briefly described in reverse chronological order, beginning with the most recent.

In August 2018, the restyling (facelift) of the sixth generation Elantra was introduced.

The fifth generation J5 began to be produced in 2010, delivering the car primarily to the domestic Korean market and the United States. This generation "got" to Russia only a year after the start of production - in the second half of 2011. On the basis of the Elantra J5 sedan, a hatchback was also created, which in America was called the Elantra GT, and in Europe - the 2012 second generation. In addition, a three-door version of the sedan was developed, which was called the Elantra Coupe. Fifth generation engine range: Gamma 1.6 MPI and Nu 1.8 MPI.

In August 2013, a (facelift) of the fifth generation sedan was introduced - a slightly revised design, new options and a diesel engine.

Pages with detailed information on the fifth generation of the Hyundai Elantra: Fourth generation: Elantra HD or J4 (2006 - 2010)

The fourth generation J4 was introduced in April 2006, and the appearance in Russian car dealerships took place in the fall of 2006. The model was produced until 2010, but the remains could be found in the showrooms of various Hyundai dealers in Russia until the end of 2011.
Starting from the fourth generation, marketers have "divorced" sedan and hatchback for Europe according to different models. The sedan remained the Elantra, while the hatchback was named . In America, they decided not to set up such an experiment, so the first generation i30 was sold there as the Elantra Touring.
Another notable feature of the fourth generation is that for the first time, the Elantra did not have an official restyling or facelift.

Pages with detailed information on the fourth generation Elantra: Third generation: Elantra XD or J3 (2000 - 2006, 2008 - 2009)

The third generation J3 was introduced in September 2000. The main body is a sedan, but hatchbacks (more precisely, liftbacks) were also produced. New cars of the third generation not only for the first time began to be mass-sold in Russia at official Hyundai dealers, but were also imported in large quantities to the secondary market of Russia from the USA. Cars from the USA in the club's forum are called not very original - "American".
The range of engines - petrol 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 (CVVTi) continues the Beta series, diesel 2.0 (CRDi).

Restyling J3 is dated 2003. And it was from the restyling of the J3 in Russia that the Elantra became a truly mass car, which greatly contributed to the emergence and growth of the Elantra Club.

After the completion of the main generation life cycle in 2006, the model received a small second life in Russia: in 2008-2009 it was produced at the Taganrog Automobile Plant (TagAZ) as the Elantra XD. Vehicles manufactured by TagAZ can be easily identified by the large immodest nameplate "Elantra XD. Produced by Tagaz" on the trunk lid.

In Russia, you can find J3 cars of one of three subspecies: "Korean" (produced in Korea), "American" (imported from the USA) and "Russian" (produced at TagAZ).

Second generation: Elantra J2 (1995 - 2000)

The J2 generation, which debuted in the fall of 1995, was externally and internally similar to the 1992 Mitsubishi Mirage. However, a few weeks later, Mitsubishi also introduced a new generation (better known as the first Carisma), so that the design lines diverged and no longer intersected. The biological relationship between Hyundai and Mitsubishi also ended. Mitsubishi's licensed engines were replaced by Hyundai's own Beta power line, first giving the Elantra the 16-valve 1.6 (G4GR) and 1.8 (G4GM), then the 16-valve 2.0 (G4GF), and later the diesel 1.9. There is evidence that the 12-valve 1.5 (G4EK) was also installed on the J2, but very rare. Since the beginning of 1996, in addition to the sedan, a station wagon has also been released.

The restyled model J2 came in 1998, giving the radiator grille two "nostrils", turning the narrow headlights into two fat commas and slightly deforming the taillights.

First generation: Elantra J1 (1990 - 1995)

The first generation Elantra or J1 was introduced in the fall of 1990 and since 1991 went into mass production, displacing the Hyundai Stellar from the assembly line. This generation was designed by Hyundai independently, but the company had not yet produced its own engines at that time. Therefore, the first batches were equipped with the original 1.5-liter 8-valve Mitsubishi 4G15 with a single camshaft (SOHC). Then, licensed production of engines from the 16-valve Mitsubishi line or the so-called Sirius family was established - so the J1 received DOHC engines Hyundai G4CR (a copy of the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi 4G61) and Hyundai G4CN (a copy of the 1.8-liter Mitsubishi 4G67), and later began to be produced and analogue 4G15 (Hyundai G4DJ). The most widely used 1.6 developed 113 hp. and accelerated the Elantra to 100 km / h in 9.5 seconds. In the same years, Hyundai also designs the first completely own engine (the so-called Alpha or G4E), but, contrary to a common misconception, it never made it to the J1.

In 1993, a slight restyling of the J1 was carried out, affecting the shape of the optics, fenders, hood and trunk, and partly the interior. If before the restyling, the Elantra quite unambiguously resembled the third generation of the Mitsubishi Mirage of the 1987 model, now (mainly in the form of the front end) it has borrowed some of the characteristic features of the fourth, released in 1992. Probably, on the one hand, the designers still did not trust themselves very much, but on the other hand, the other - the second generation Hyundai Pony / Excel, which was produced at that time, was a licensed copy of the Mitsubishi Colt / Lancer, the Hyundai Sonata legally repeated the Mitsubishi Galant, so the Elantra had to be in harmony with its neighbors in the lineup. By the way, experts say that they were copied from Mitsubishi and, up to the J3, retained interchangeability and many internal components.

Origin of the names Hyundai and Elantra

Hyundai is a Korean word meaning "modernity" or "present time" in Russian, chosen in 1947 by a marine engine repair shop for its new road and bridge business, and in 1967 transferred to the company's nascent automobile division, which has already become a large industrial concern.

The word Elantra (Elantra) was artificially created in 1990 and therefore is not translated. An automaker growing out of the tight confines of the Korean market needed a name that was easy to pronounce for European (North American, Australian) customers. But there are three and a half versions of its origin known.

1) According to the official legend, it was composed of the words "ELAN" (in German and French - "swiftness", "impulse", "onslaught", "liveness", "enthusiasm") and "TRANSPORT" (in English, French, German and many others - the same as ours). Those. "ELAN TRA (nsport)" - "assertive car". Considering that the designed car was really quite frisky for its time, one can believe that the creators tried to start from laying this quality in the name.

2) The second version claims that the Koreans did not go far and created a pseudo-European-sounding word by simply rearranging the letters of the real-life word "LATERAN". This is the name of the papal cathedral palace, incredibly famous for the Ecumenical Councils of the Roman Catholic Church that took place in it in the Middle Ages, not to mention the less significant synods (however, those interested in history can easily find a lot of details on the Internet using the phrase "Lateran Councils"). If we assume that the Koreans proceeded from the consideration that for the adherents of the most massive religion in the world the word "LATERAN" is native and familiar (and even sacred), and therefore the word constructed from the same sounds should not cause injuries to the speech apparatus, then this version does not seem quite fantastic.

3) The third version of romance is completely devoid of and says that the word has no etymology at all, and it is generated in the same way as computer programs compose or solve crossword puzzles - by brute force. Namely, the most frequently used letters in European languages were taken, all possible combinations were made from them, unpronounceable ones (for example, "eaanlrt") or dissonant ones (say, the combination "rat" - rat) were automatically eliminated, and one of the remaining combinations was selected by voting. Theoretically possible, but I don't want to believe.

3.5) Well, a completely anecdotal hypothesis, but since it was found on the Internet, we will retell it: the African antelope with spiral horns - "ELAND" could serve as an impetus for the creation of the word.

Shortly after entering the world markets, the name "Elantra" caused claims from other automakers: in Australia, MITSUBISHI patented the word "ELANTE" and used it to denote improved equipment of its lineup, and in Europe there was the legendary sports car "ELAN" by the British company LOTUS. Hyundai's first desire was to change the name to "AVANTE" (something they always liked about it), but even then a surprise awaited - in Europe, AUDI owned the rights to "AVANT", which it called the modifications of its AUDI 80/100 station wagons. Hyundai did not want to part with the names it liked at all, but retreated to a shortened version of "LANTRA" (soon, by the way, an educational center for agricultural workers with such an abbreviation was discovered in the UK, but he did not deal with cars and showed no objections - even though he was lucky here). So, even the first generation of cars in those regions where MITSUBISHI and LOTUS claims were not declared was called "ELANTRA", and in Europe and Australia "LANTRA". Because the second generation of the car in some countries, including Korea itself, the Koreans still assigned the name "AVANTE" (and in some places only "ELANTRA / LANTRA" in the station wagon was called that) and, as a result, it was sold around the world already under three names. By the time the third generation was released, "ELAN" and "ELANTE" had finally left the scene and Hyundai decided to return to the same and original name "ELANTRA" everywhere. LANTRA (LANTRA) has sunk back into oblivion, and AVANTE (AVANTE) was left only in one country of the world - at home. Where it is still called that today. In addition, the name i35 is used in some countries.
Since Russia imports and operates used cars from all over the world for a long time, all the listed nameplates are found on our roads (by the way, they can also be seen in our club, which also gathered from all over the world).
In addition, in Russia there are many ways to distort the correct name of the Hyundai Elantra, for example: Hyunday Elantra, Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Elantra, Hynday Elantra, Hyndai Elantra, Henday Elantra, Huyndai Elantra, Huynday Elantra, Hyundai Elantra. In Russian, Hyundai Elantra is usually pronounced as: Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Elantra, Honda Elantra, and even Nundai Elantra or Huangdai Elantra.

Elantra is the first car built by Hyundai on its own platform. In general, HMC (Hyundai Motor Company) arose back in 1967 and initially engaged in licensed production of the rear-wheel drive Ford Cortina. By the way, this is the future genealogical branch of the Elantra. In 1974, the Hyundai Pony (Excel in some markets) of the X-1 generation began to be produced, based on the Ford Escort, but having its own (or rather, ordered from Giorgio Giugiaro from Otaldesign) bodies, and therefore came out under the Hyundai brand.
In 1978, licensed production of the Ford Granada began.
If the 70s passed for Hyundai in collaboration with Ford, then the 80s were marked by partnership with Mitsubishi.
In 1983, the Ford Cortina was equipped with a Mitsubishi KM119 transmission and a 1.6-liter Mitsubishi4G32, dressed in a body from Giugiaro and began to produce under the name Hyundai Stellar. Then 1.8 engines were added (4G37 from Mitsubishi Eclipse, Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser), and then 2.0 (4G63, which was on Mitsubishi Galant and again Mitsubishi Eclipse).
In 1984, the X-2 generation Hyundai Pony/Excel appeared, now a licensed copy of the Mitsubishi Lancer/Colt (and powered by the same Mitsubishi 4G32 as the Stellar). By the way, after another 10 years, the X-3 generation will receive the name Accent / Verna known to us.
In 1986, the Ford Granada will be replaced on the assembly line by the Hyundai Grandeur, which is similar to the then Mitsubishi Debonair. Over time, it will turn into the Hyundai XG, and later add another name to itself, the Hyundai Azera.
In 1988, the first Hyundai Sonata was released, at that moment copying the Mitsubishi Galant.
And only in the 90s, Hyundai switched to independent auto construction, which was opened just by the arrival of the Hyundai Elantra in place of the Hyundai Stellar.

Elantra is Hyundai's best-selling model in the world. In total, from 1990 to 2011, more than 7 million cars of this model were sold worldwide, and the company itself considers the Elantra the second most popular model in the world (although silent about the first place where Toyota Corolla is possibly located).
