The most popular is the torpedo installed by the manufacturer on the "six", since it is equipped with a tachometer. However, to be honest, it is not entirely reasonable to call it the most profitable option for tuning the instrument panel of the VAZ-2101.

The torpedo has special mechanisms that provide glass blowing, but at the same time it lacks the same desired tachometer.

Having considered all the options for the instrument panel of VAZ cars, we can conclude that the “seven” torpedo is considered the best option, which has a tachometer, while it is additionally equipped at the factory with a central air duct and a heating system that maintains comfortable conditions in the car.

Now that the choice has been made, you can proceed to the practical part of replacing the VAZ-2101 torpedo with your own hands.

First, you will have to focus on dismantling the old torpedo. Such actions should be carried out carefully, without haste.

The algorithm of actions will be accompanied by the following sequence:

  • removal of the instrument panel;
  • dismantling the glove box shelf;
  • unscrewing the fasteners that fix the panel to the engine compartment;
  • rope dismantling.

After that, you should move on to the next removal of the steering column. It is also held in place with four nuts, which you will of course need to unscrew and then loosen the screw that secures the shaft to the gearbox.

For deflectors, you need to buy seals or take them from the VAZ-2101. After installing the air ducts, we return the pedal assembly and column to their original position.

Installation

Before starting work, it is necessary to remove everything superfluous from the panel. If you chose the “five” dashboard for installation, then only one of the four main mounts will fall into place. With the help of metal strips, the central fasteners must be attached to the bracket.

For mounting on the right side, you need to drill holes in the bulkhead of the engine compartment and weld a stud, if it is not at hand, then a bolt of the appropriate diameter will do. The stiffening frame is a structure of several pipes fastened (bolted or welded) to each other, which repeats the main lines of the car body. Basically, the frames are installed by motorists who are seriously involved, for example, in racing: the frame helps in the event of a collision to avoid serious damage to the car and save the lives of people inside it.

Rigidity frames are welded and bolted. Welded frames are considered more durable and reliable, but they do not look very aesthetically pleasing and take up a lot of space - you even have to get rid of the rear seats. You can make a welded frame yourself, taking into account all your wishes for the car, but this is a laborious and technological process that will require not only physical strength and the ability to use a welding machine, but also 3D modeling skills or, at least, the ability to build drawings. In addition, in order to weld the frame, literally everything will have to be removed from the car interior - seats, pillars, speakers, trim, etc.

As a rule, seamless pipes made of unalloyed carbon steel with a thickness of 2–2.5 mm are used for the manufacture of the stiffening frame. For the main elements, pipes of a larger diameter should be taken - for example, 45–50 mm, for additional ones, 38–40 mm is enough.

Camshaft replacement

You can install a new camshaft with a modified cam geometry. This will qualitatively change the gas distribution: the cylinders will be more saturated with a combustible mixture, the torque will increase.

To replace the camshaft you will need:

  • keys for 10 and 17;
  • flat screwdriver.

Replacement is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. Using a 10 wrench, remove the valve cover.
  2. Using a flathead screwdriver and a 17 wrench, remove the camshaft mounting nut.
  3. Loosen the timing chain tensioner bolt and remove the camshaft sprocket.
  4. Unscrew the remaining nuts and carefully pull out the housing together with the camshaft.

Installing a new camshaft is done in reverse order. You should first replace the rockers (valve drive levers) with new ones. This will help prevent engine knocking.

Intake manifold bore

Boring the intake channels will increase the level of filling the engine chamber with an air-combustible mixture.

To perform this operation you will need:

  • drill;
  • several types of sandpaper of different grain sizes;
  • rags, rags;
  • calipers;
  • lubricant (universal WD-40 is suitable);
  • vise.

Boring occurs as follows:

  1. The collector should be removed and installed in a vise for ease of operation.
  2. You need to wrap a rag on the drill bit, sandpaper overlaps on top. At the first stages of work, you will need paper with a large grain, at the final stages, for grinding - with a fine one.
  3. Insert the drill into the valve and start boring. Important: do not push the drill hard, otherwise the sandpaper may slip, and the drill will damage the collector.

Many owners of "penny" do not leave without improvements the exhaust system of cars, replacing the standard muffler with a straight-through one, or simply adding it to the existing one, achieving the effect of "double exhaust" and the characteristic low roar that accompanies it.

What is the difference between a straight-through muffler and a conventional muffler? The standard muffler consists of numerous sharply curved baffles and tubes. Passing through them, the exhaust gases are forced to change directions, due to which the pressure drops, the sound becomes quieter, and toxicity decreases.

In a direct-flow muffler, the pipes, as the name implies, are straight, the bends are smoothed out, there are no partitions, and there are fewer welds. This allows the exhaust gases to move freely.

When a "penny" needs new "pants"

The exhaust pipe VAZ 2101 was called "pants" for its characteristic design: two long pipes connected at the edges resemble trousers.

It is necessary to replace the receiving pipe when a through hole forms in it and it begins to let air through. The fact is that exhaust gases circulate through the pipe, the temperature of which can reach 300–500 degrees, which even damages metal over time.

To replace the exhaust pipe with a VAZ 2101, you need the following tools:

  • wrench "13" (preferably an extension cord with a socket head of the appropriate size);

  • calipers;
  • metal ruler.

An important point: replacement should be done only on a cooled engine; otherwise, there is a risk of getting burned - after all, as mentioned above, the pipes in the exhaust system can heat up to several hundred degrees.
