This SUV from the German company Mercedes has experienced the biggest change. Firstly, the new model received a slightly different name - GLS. Already by this postscript, you can safely judge that this is a fast, reliable and comfortable SUV. Restyling will bring here a huge number of changes in appearance, engine range and interior design. Mercedes-Benz GL-class (now GLS-class) will become even better in absolutely all respects and will still be in great demand in all markets.
As before, the car has huge dimensions in order to accommodate passengers and cargo with a lot of convenience. From all sides, the car was supplemented with various kinds of decorative elements, thanks to which its appearance was significantly refreshed.
The front of the car takes up relatively little space, but it is the muzzle that is the most vicious element in terms of design. Its decoration begins with a small windshield, located almost perpendicularly. Next comes a short hood cover, decorated with various types of relief. Below in the photo you can see a large radiator grill made in the shape of an oval. Inside it are several horizontal stripes painted in chrome and a fine mesh. On the sides of the main air intake is a small optics of an interesting shape, filled with exceptionally high-quality LEDs.
Particularly interesting is the bottom front bumper. Here you can find huge side cutouts that provide solid airflow for the brake system, made in the form of triangles, as well as a solid chrome insert in the center, which also contains several cutouts to improve cooling of the engine compartment. In general, the muzzle looks as aggressive and bright as possible.
From the side, the new bodywork looks just like a premium SUV is supposed to - here you can see a little relief at the bottom, chrome trim on details such as window perimeters, door handles, rear-view mirrors and a sill, as well as a large number of other elements that make the car look solidly.
The rear bumper is also powerful. It is located almost perpendicular to the road. Such a decision now can be seen not so often. Here there was a place for a huge glass of the luggage compartment, over which hangs a massive visor with a line of brake lights, large oval lights filled with LEDs, a pair of fog optics lines and a barely noticeable metal body kit that includes two cutouts for the exhaust system.
Salon
The interior of the car is almost the best among all SUVs. The new Mercedes GL 2018 model year is finished with high-quality leather, wood and metals. There is also an insane amount of various additions, thanks to which the car is cozy and comfortable just like at home.
The center console of the car is filled with a bunch of elements with which you can configure all the options of the car. The huge touch screen dominates here, which is surrounded by vertical deflectors on the sides. Next, you can see a solid-sized panel with analog buttons. Even lower is the panel, the elements of which allow you to configure the operation of the SUV's climate system. The console finishes with a solid pocket for things, at the bottom of which you can also find connectors for connecting third-party devices to the multimedia system of the car.
The finish of the tunnel is also impressive. It is set quite high and takes up a decent amount of space, which allows you to place a lot of useful things on it. Approximately a third of the total space is reserved for the panel with transmission and chassis adjustments. The rest of the space is filled with cupholders covered by a wooden curtain and a large armrest that houses a refrigerator.
The design of the steering wheel is practically no different from what can be seen in other cars of the company. Leather trim, decorative inserts made of wood or metal, a bunch of buttons on the spokes - all this has already been seen before. Behind the steering wheel there are two large wells, at the bottom of which are analog instruments. The rest of the space is occupied by a large on-board computer screen.
Naturally, the main elements in the interior of the car are the seats. There can be from four to seven of them here. The front seats are always decorated in the same way - leather trim, soft filling, a heating system, a lot of electrical adjustments, ventilation and massage. The second row can be either triple or for two passengers. In any case, there will be the same set of options, as well as a separate multimedia system and its own climate control. The third row can be purchased upon request. It will be represented by two no less comfortable armchairs.
There is also plenty of space for the luggage compartment. Minimum here you can put up to 700 liters of cargo. The maximum volume of the trunk can be 2300 liters.
Specifications
Mercedes GL 2018 is equipped with several engines, the characteristics of which are quite impressive. The simplest configuration option is a three-liter diesel engine with 258 forces. The same engine, but already on gasoline fuel, produces 333 forces. The next option is a 4.7-liter gasoline engine capable of delivering 455 horsepower. The most interesting unit is the 5.5-liter. It is put only in a special AMG version. This monster is capable of delivering as much as 585 power forces. A test drive shows that the car consumes a lot of fuel.

- The most powerful 5.5 liter twin-turbo V8 will deliver an amazing 577 horsepower and 760.1 Nm of torque (AMG GLE 63 S). Consumption for this version is also the same as the previous 18.1/ 13.9 liters.
- We will also see a hybrid version that consists of a 3.0 liter twin-turbo V6 engine, plus an electric motor. The total power it will come with is 436 hp. and 649 Nm of torque (GLE 550e 4MATIC hybrid). Fuel economy in the city / highway, 6 / 4.8 liters per hundred kilometers.
Among the full-size crossovers of the “big German three”, the Mercedes GLE is catching up: the Audi Q7 and BMW X5 have already changed generations, offering advanced solutions and technologies. However, the new GLE outdid them both! From the previous model, the just presented car inherited very little, and some options appeared for the first time in the segment.
The GLE has changed its facial expression and stern design, but has remained 100% recognizable thanks to the characteristic roof pillars and the shape of the rear windows. Numerous tricks with edges and surfaces of the body, as well as shields under the bottom, made it possible to reduce the drag coefficient Cd from 0.32 to 0.29. At the same time, the windshield is installed a little more vertically, which made it possible to increase the openings of the front doors for ease of entry and exit. Wheels - landing diameter from 18 to 22 inches.
The wheelbase has grown by 80 mm (up to 2995 mm) - and almost all of this increase went to the rear passengers: the distance between the rows of seats has been increased by 69 mm. Also, the stock of space above the heads of the rear passengers has increased by 33 mm. And the Mercedes GLE has got an optional second-row electric drive: the remote control on the door, traditional for the brand, allows you to shift the outer sections of the sofa by 100 mm in the longitudinal direction, change the tilt of the backrests and adjust the height of the headrests. The electric drive was also announced for the new BMW X5, it will be installed only in December, and it has more modest possibilities: there is no backrest adjustment (you can only fold it entirely), as well as the function of changing the height of the head restraints.
Even the basic second row is divided in a ratio of 40:20:40, and for a surcharge, you can order a third row of seats. Trunk volume "under the curtain" has been increased from 690 to 825 liters, although the maximum capacity has not grown so much (from 2010 to 2055 liters). Equally important, the fifth door opening is now 72 mm wider.
And in the front of the cabin - the traditional Mercedes revolution. A wide solid dashboard with instrument displays and media systems is a common feature of all new Mercedes starting from the A-class. But the screens of the GLE are larger (12.3 inches versus 10.25 for the hatchback), and the front panel is still original, with its own design solutions like four ventilation deflectors in the center and a decorative grille to the right of the screen.
The MBUX media system has voice control (“Hey Mercedes!”) And gestures (the camera is built into the overhead console). The instrument cluster has four design options, and in addition, you can order a head-up display. Also among the options is the Energizing function, like the S-class: it controls the interior lighting, audio system and massager in the chair.
New functions have been added to the familiar electronic driver assistants. For example, Active Tailback Assist will stop the car ahead of time if there is traffic ahead, while the Auto Brake System will stop the GLE before turning or turning left if oncoming traffic is detected. Although the turn signal must be turned on for successful operation, which drivers of such cars in Russia do not always do. There is a quasi-autopilot, like in Mercedes cars, a “cork” cruise control with the ability to stop and then accelerate, it works at speeds up to 60 km / h, and an assistant for maneuvering in reverse with a trailer has also been added.
The new GLE is based on the new MHA (Mercedes High Architecture) modular platform, which, in fact, is an MRA “trolley” adapted for crossovers, used on E- and S-class cars. The base chassis has springs, the second level is Airmatic air suspension, but now there is a third option. E-Active Body Control is an active hydropneumatic suspension powered by a 48-volt electrical system and able to control each wheel individually. On asphalt, the system can deal with rolls (), and on off-road, it can align the position of the body in advance, compensating for the terrain along which the wheels roll. There is one more “off-road trick”: if the car is stuck, then the suspension (if possible) will simulate the buildup, increasing the pressure in the hydraulic system of the struts and briefly increasing the pressure of the wheels on the supporting surface to try to get out of the trap.
So far, the only modification of the Mercedes GLE 450 has been presented with a 3.0-liter in-line gasoline engine that produces 367 hp. and 500 Nm. It is loaded with the EQ-Boost system, which is a starter-alternator powered by the same 48-volt electrical system as the suspension. The motor produces 22 hp. and 250 Nm, helps in the first seconds of acceleration, and can also turn off and quickly start a gasoline engine while driving. By the way, the cooling system pump and the air conditioning compressor also work from 48 volts.
Later there will be base variants with four-cylinder turbo engines, diesel modifications, AMG versions with a V8 engine, as well as full-fledged hybrids with the ability to recharge. All GLEs will have a nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic. But now there are two options for all-wheel drive transmission.
The simplest four-cylinder versions will retain the old 4Matic system with permanent all-wheel drive and a symmetrical center differential (by default, thrust is distributed between the axles in a ratio of 50:50). And all other modifications of the new GLE now have a transmission with a multi-plate clutch for connecting the front wheels. You should not be afraid of it: with the proper setting, the patency will be excellent. For example, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, created on the platform of the old Mercedes ML, has such a scheme. In addition, for versions with a clutch, you can order the Off-Road package with a full-fledged demultiplier.
The world premiere of the new Mercedes GLE will take place in October at the Paris Motor Show. The main registration will remain American: production will be established at the Daimler concern plant in the American Tuscaloosa (Alabama), where all generations of ML / GLE models were made. The start of sales is scheduled for early 2019. And subsequently, the new GLE will be assembled at the Russian plant of the Daimler concern. Its construction , the launch is scheduled for 2019, and four models are announced in the production program, but the GLE should become the most massive one.

The side of the car is adorned with a copious amount of undulating relief, a bunch of chrome details such as door handles, glass perimeter, sills, mirrors and others, as well as heavily inflated arches with huge wheels underneath containing new, stylish rims.
The rear bumper boasts the presence of a short trunk lid, traditional for such a body, with a small decorative protrusion at the end. The central place is reserved for long strips of optics, between which there is a thick strip of chromium. The body kit is decorated with a metal insert, along the edges of which are placed exhaust pipes of a rather large size.

The cars of this company simply cannot have a simple interior, so the new Mercedes GLE coupe of the 2018 model year is finished only with expensive leather, alcantara and metals, has an excellent multimedia system and a huge number of modern assistants and other functionality.
The main place on the center console is reserved for a huge monitor, which is controlled by touch. Next to it are no less massive deflectors. A little lower is a panel with analog buttons that are responsible for configuring most of the systems that are in the car. At the very bottom is a panel with climate control adjustments.

The steering wheel also boasts excellent equipment and finishes. It is quite soft, and on the outside it is made with pleasant skin. The spokes are filled to capacity with buttons. The dashboard, placed directly behind the steering wheel, consists of two massive wells containing a speedometer and a tachometer. The rest of the space here is filled with an on-board computer.
All five seats in the car are distinguished by a high level of comfort, which is achieved with leather trim, soft filling, heating, ventilation, a bunch of electrical adjustments and other useful options.
