Lost car keys what to do What to do if you lost your car keys

03.03.2020

The reason for this note was a real case with the car of one of my friends. He corny lost the last key to the elderly - he "sowed" the first one even earlier. The sadness of a comrade took on quite definite financial and temporal outlines after a call to one of the Toyota dealerships. There, having broken the car by VIN, they asked for 20,000 rubles for the restoration of the lost key, warning that the duplicate would be ready in a month and a half or two months. None of the details of such a picture suited the car owner, and therefore the search for alternatives began. It turned out that the city has a sufficient number of specialized services that help car owners in similar situations. However, even here the total cost of restoring the lost will not please.

The calculation turned out as follows: to a car service - 2,500 rubles, opening a car - from 2,000 rubles, turning off the alarm - from 1,000 rubles, dismantling / installing the ignition lock with making a duplicate key - about 5,000 rubles. And this is without the cost of the key blank itself. In total - more than 10,000 rubles. Paying even such an amount for memory loss seemed somehow out of hand, and the search for options continued. As a result, an even more budgetary solution was found - with the departure of the master to the parking lot of the closed car. The main thing is to indicate the make, model and year of manufacture of the vehicle even at the ordering stage (and if in the biography of the car there have already been facts of replacing keys, door locks or the ignition lock, warn servicemen about this in advance).

The service with departure costs about 6000 rubles. Moreover, at the request of the client, the master (one wants to call him a “bear cub”) can not only make new keys, but also re-make the car in general. The continuing decrease in the price of the issue, as one immersed in the topic, caused a certain excitement among the confused car owner: to what level can it be brought down in principle? To this end, he climbed to stir up layers of folk wisdom on specialized Internet forums for owners of Toyota cars.

Among other ideas gleaned from the World Wide Web, it turned out to be completely idiotic: try to use the key from another car to open the ill-fated Camry, similarly to the model. In the neighboring microdistrict, as it turned out, there lived another, no less happy owner of exactly the same old Toyota, who agreed to provide the key to her for a daring experiment. As a result, it turned out that the key to one Camry not only perfectly opens the doors of another Camry, but also successfully starts it! As a result, the recovery of lost keys cost only 800 rubles per pair. However, now the forgetful friend is overwhelmed by obsessive doubts about the safety of his car, which he usually parks in the courtyard of his own high-rise building.

When purchasing a new car, you always get 2 keys with it - the main one and the spare one. If the car is supported, this kit may already be incomplete due to the fact that the old owner lost the keys to the car, and he didn’t know what to do in this situation. Now it is not known where this key is and who can use it, so it is better to refrain from such purchases.

If the key was lost not by the previous owner, but by you, this article-instruction will help you quickly find the loss and not make unnecessary mistakes.

So, without finding a car key in your pocket, bag or other place, you need to ....

  1. Without panic, carefully review everything again, not only where it should have been, but also in other places, perhaps in a hurry you put it not in the right pocket of the jacket, but, for example, in the chest pocket, or even threw it into the bag or a bag with products (shopping, etc.);
  2. If you still couldn’t find the loss, remember your route and don’t be too lazy to walk it in the opposite direction, carefully examining the road and all the objects for (in) which the keys could fall. Be sure to visit again those places where you could simply leave (forget) your keys: at the cash desk of a store, on a table in a restaurant, etc.

And do not hesitate to ask the service personnel (the waiter who served you, the cashier, etc.) about them, very often it is their representatives who are the first to find the lost (left) things. Also, if you met someone, had dinner, etc., be sure to ask this person to reconsider their belongings, perhaps he / she accidentally grabbed your keys along with his.

  1. Leave your phone number with the administrator (restaurant, hotel, trading floor, etc. - the place where you were) in case the keys are found later. And think for yourself how to continue driving or drive the car to the parking lot / to the dealer.
  2. If you have a spare key at home, ask your relatives to bring it to you. In the absence of such an opportunity or a second key, you can try to open the car without them.

Method number 1.

If one of the windows of the car is not completely closed, you can easily get inside the car using an ordinary wire or any other hook that allows you to raise the door lock lever.

Method number 2.

It also involves the use of wire. Only much thinner, enough to fit into the gap between the body and the door or the glass and the side of the door.

Bend the wire with a hook and try to hook the door closing drive rod with it or press the closer / lift it (depending on the car model). The main thing here is to find a wire with sufficient power reserve.

Method number 3.

The simplest and most expensive.

All that is required of you is simply to call a professional (fortunately, almost every major car service provides such services today), explain the problem and provide documents confirming that you are the owner of the car being opened.

You will be surprised how quickly he can open your car and even start it, you just have to go to the workshop and order a duplicate for yourself.

How to get a new key without having the old one as a sample?

Again, there are different options available here.

  1. You go to the official dealer with all the documents for the car, unless, of course, the car was bought new, and ask him just one question: I lost my car keys, what to do. In response, he will most likely offer you to make a new key, based on the parameters of your car and / or its serial number.
  2. You change all lock cylinders, including the ignition lock.

Pros - intruders will not be able to use your lost keys to steal your car.

Cons - it is expensive, complicated and time consuming.

  1. You call all reliable companies involved in the production of keys, specify whether they can make a duplicate without the original, if they can, determine for yourself the most optimal one in terms of price-quality ratio, remove the ignition lock and deliver it to the right address, again along with documents to the car. They will make a cast from the lock and make a duplicate of it, the only reason when this action will be denied to you is when the key is not simple, but chipped.

What should I do if I lost the chip key?

The main difficulty in restoring chip keys is that they cannot simply be rolled back on a cast due to the presence of this very chip in them, which contains unique information for the on-board computer of a particular car. The slightest mistake in its programming, and the car simply will not start. And how to do this programming without having a sample - no way. Therefore, the only way out of the situation when the chip key is lost is to contact the official dealer. Only he has data on each released car.

Ideally, if you have a spare at home, at least a technical one (only opening the car, but not starting its engine), key.

It almost always has a barcode, knowing which, the dealer will be able to produce for you a chip key completely identical to the lost one.

If you do not have such a spare key or it does not have any code on it, the dealer will ask you to bring the car to it to assess the difficulty of making the key. It may well be, especially if you do not have not only a barcode, but also a key, that the dealer will refuse such an order.

You will have the only way out - to completely change the lock for another chip key, and this is very expensive (20-50 thousand rubles).

Of course, you can still contact private specialized companies, but you would not be recommended to do this, because, firstly, if the official representative of the manufacturer of your car did not take up this matter, then it is foolish to hope that someone else will be able to restore this chip key (if they take it, they will take it, only whether the key they made will work in a duet with your car), and secondly, it is not known, even if they succeed, whether they will also make a duplicate for themselves and for what purpose they want to use it. Therefore, if you decide to use their services, immediately after receiving the key, either issue a full CASCO, or enhance the protection of the car from theft with additional systems.

No one is immune from annoying misunderstandings - even the most accurate and organized person can lose car keys. Therefore, the question is: “what to do in such a situation?” - will always be relevant.

What is most unnerving in such situations is that it is impossible to know for sure whether the keys were lost or purposefully stolen. If we take into account the “bad habit” of hooking the key fob from the alarm and / or the keys to the common bunch ... In general, we can give reinsurance, but reliable advice - if the search “in hot pursuit” did not give anything, then we must assume that the keys are precisely abducted.

If there is a second set of keys

First of all (without forgetting to post an announcement in the style of “a bunch of keys was lost in the vicinity of supermarket N”), you need to re-register the remaining key fob in the alarm memory. During this operation, the memory will be preliminarily cleared, that is, it will stop responding to commands from the lost one. Of course, this will not make it difficult for a potential thief to enter the salon, but a random person who finds the keys will lose the opportunity to find the car by sound: well, it’s hard to predict what an unknown person who has full access to the car can come up with.

For at least a few days, it makes sense to pay attention to the parking place, especially at night - choose a lighted place under surveillance cameras or paid parking.

On cars where there is a regular immobilizer, and the chip is built into the key head and removed from it, when installing autorun, it is usually removed from the spare key. In fact, in our time this can already be considered a gross mistake - both keyless immobilizer crawlers and alarms that support imitation of a standard key without an external crawler have long been developed. But in order to keep the ability to use the car, you will have to tinker in search of exactly where the lineman's block is hidden in the car - and if the alarm was set by a professional, then it will take a long time to search.

On cars with a key card, an emergency door opening mechanism is usually provided when the battery is dead. For example, at Renault, a mechanical key can be pulled out of the key card, which is inserted into an inconspicuous larva on the driver's door. Therefore, when buying a car with auto start already installed, you need to make sure that the emergency key is removed from the card installed in the immobilizer crawler, giving it to the installation yourself - remove it yourself and save it at home. Otherwise, if the second key card is lost, the task of opening the car will become much more difficult - not all electromechanical locks of such machines can be opened using the classic method with a ruler or a hook.

Video: What happens if you lose your car keys.

The next step on a car with an immobilizer is a visit to an authorized dealer. There are two things to do here:

  1. First, order a new key.
  2. Secondly, ask for a second immobilizer training using the preserved key, if this car (and these are almost all models) requires a diagnostic scanner for this.

The essence here is the same as when re-registering the key fob - the code of the lost chip will be erased from the immobilizer's memory, and the missing set of keys will become practically useless.

Of course, there is a cheaper way - now many companies offer the service of cloning keys, turning a copy of the regular one from a "blank" and installing a copy of the remaining chip into it. But you need to remember that the lost key will retain full functionality, and saving money can result in a subsequent search for a car.

On machines that have a key card instead of a key, the algorithm of actions will be exactly the same.

Video: What will (do) if you lose all the keys to the car.

If there is no immobilizer on the car, it is enough just to make a copy of the remaining key from the "blank". Of course, there is still a small risk that the master will make a backup copy for himself, but do not forget that for a hijacker, not a single regular lock in a car is a problem, and a car that does not have additional anti-theft means is already in constant risk zone.

If there is no second key

In this case, there are few options - few people dare to open their own car and turn off the ignition switch. Opening the doors may be necessary only if the entire key was hidden in the car during installation (the chip cannot be removed from the key head). Here you can try to open the doors yourself or use the services of autopsy masters, but in any case, you need to keep documents with you: with an independent autopsy, you can arouse the expected interest from the police, but the master will immediately demand to show them so as not to become an accomplice to the crime.

The principle of opening the door is obvious: it is necessary to push the rod of the internal lock button so as to transfer it to the "open" state. Depending on the kinematics of the lock, it will either need to be pushed down, or pulled up (on machines with a vertical button), or pushed to the side (on machines where the lock key is built into the inner handle). The classic tool for this is a metal ruler, and it is difficult to give more accurate recommendations in the scope of our article: it is better to clarify the features of a particular model on the Internet, the sad experience of opening your own car is guaranteed to be found on the profile forum.

An extreme case is to squeeze the door: using the flexibility of the metal, you can pull it towards you so that you can get to the unlock button in the cabin. But you need to take into account the serious risk of damage to the body metal. This section also includes access through the trunk on hatchbacks and station wagons - if there are no other options, and the car has the ability to open the trunk from the passenger compartment, you can roll up the trunk larva, subsequently replacing it with a plug. A suitable tool is a strong bayonet-type screwdriver (with a metal shaft that runs the entire length, not just molded into the plastic handle).

If the key was still the last one, there are two options. On a relatively new car, and even more so if it has an immobilizer, you will have to contact the officials to request a new chip key or chip card from the factory, and then register them again (alas, you will have to deliver the car to the technical center on a tow truck for your own account, Road Assistance programs rarely provide for such cases). It is better, of course, not to save money and order two keys already in order to insure yourself against repeating such an experience. If there is no immobilizer and the car is old, then the cheapest thing would be to order a new set of locks at any auto parts store or even at a dismantling site - upon arrival of the ordered one, you will have to open one of the doors, and then replace all the locks one by one.

On a number of cars, it is possible to take an impression from a regular larva. Having opened your car in any way, you can look for an offer of such a service in the city and ask the experts if they can make a cast for this model. This option will save a lot of time, since you don’t have to order new larvae and install them, and it can turn out to be cheaper in terms of money (especially if you change the larvae in a car service).

  1. Do not panic! You and your loved ones are alive and well. Only thing was lost. Unpleasant, but not a disaster.
  2. Search better. Turn out pockets, feel the lining of clothes and bags. Replay your route, remember the places you have been, the people you have talked to. Often the keys are found, you just have to calm down and think a little.
  3. Remember if there is a spare kit. Keeping a duplicate of the keys at work, in the country, with parents or friends is a sign of prudence. Consider, have you ever manifested it?

Lost key announcements are bait for criminals. You should not talk about what happened to your neighbors in the porch or parking lot, and even more so blow it on social networks.

If the keys are not found and there are no spares, go to plan B.

Step 1. Opening the door

baldoor.ru

There are several options here.

  1. Contact the management company or HOA. A locksmith from a housing maintenance organization will help you get into the apartment. Plus: the service is usually inexpensive. Cons: you may have to wait a long time, and then repair the door.
  2. Call the Ministry of Emergency Situations at 112. Rescuers not only save lives, but also help to return home. Pros: work fast. Minus: they are unlikely to stand on ceremony with the safety of doors and windows.
  3. Call industrial climbers. A great option if you live on the upper floors, and the window or balcony is ajar. Plus: the property practically does not suffer. Cons: such specialists are not available in all cities, their services are paid.
  4. Turn to professionals. By typing “emergency lock opening” into the search engine, you will find dozens of companies. Pros: the masters work around the clock, seven days a week and arrive in 30-60 minutes. They guarantee the safety of property and open any locks. Minus: expensive.

Whichever option you choose, you will need to prove that you are the owner of the home. If you have a passport with a residence permit or there are a couple of neighbors who are ready to confirm your ownership, proceed to the third step. If so, call the landlord.

If there are no documents and witnesses, see step number 2.

There are exceptions to all rules. No need to wait for the owners when you have to open the lock to save life or property. But the damage from hacking should be less than the damage from such situations.

Step 2. Call the police

You can dial 02/102 - then the duty squad will arrive - or call the district police officer. You can find out the contacts of the nearest police station using a special service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Law enforcement officials will authorize entry to the apartment and check documents when you are there.

Be sure to write a statement to the police if there is a suspicion that the keys were stolen, and also if they are lost along with the documents.

And note. Lost and found tables work in police stations, where conscious citizens bring found things. Take a look there - suddenly you're lucky. But even in this case, it is better not to skip the third step.

Step 3. Change the locks

Even if the door remained intact or - lo and behold! - a native key was found, it is better to change the locks or recode the locking mechanism.

Step 1. Getting into the salon

novate.ru

There are two options here:

  1. Act independently. If the window of one of the doors is ajar, you can open the car with the help of skill and a simple wire device. If the car is closed tightly, you can use a life hack with a bank card and a rope lasso: insert the first one into the gap between the door and the body, and the second the lock button.
  2. Call the experts. This is especially true if it is cold outside or, for example, you are parked in a paid parking lot. The master will not only help you get into the salon, but also turn off the alarm.

No matter how you manage to open the locks, with or without supporting documents, remember: the responsibility is not on the one who opened it, but on the one who asked to do it.

Step 2. Starting the car

If you have a regular blade wrench, you can:

  1. Remove the larva of one of the locks and contact the nearest key making service. Plus: inexpensive. Cons: Takes a while.
  2. Make a cast on the spot. Masters from special firms can make or pick up a duplicate key without leaving the car. Plus: convenient. Cons: extra charge.

It is more difficult when the key is with a chip. Chip keys are associated with immobilizers that block the control system if they cannot read the codes sewn into the keys. In this case, you have two options:

  1. Contact an authorized dealer. You provide a card with the immobilizer number, they order a new key for you. If the card is also lost, go to the third step. Plus: a new original key, safe recoding of the "brains" of the car. Cons: expensive and very long (from two weeks to several months).
  2. Contact a specialized company. They will help to make a cheap duplicate of the lost key and recode the car electronics for it. Pros: fast and fairly budget. Minus: you can run into scammers.

Step 3. Transporting the car to a safe place

While you are recovering the car keys, it is better to transport it to the garage or to a secure parking lot.

You will also need a tow truck if you need to deliver the car to the dealer's service center.
