And this is good, because, frankly, there are few successful examples of turning sedans into hatchbacks. Remember at least the five-door Hyundai Solaris of the previous generation and the hatchback Chevrolet Cruze - a design disaster, not otherwise.

AvtoVAZ was helped to avoid such a failure by the right approach to choosing a body, and by the skillful hands with a bright head of chief designer Steve Mattin. And also - initially successful both in proportions and in filling the donor.

Looking at all this, it seems that one of the VAZ workers came to work in a Skoda, began to boast of Simply Clever chips, and the people responsible for the development of Vesta rolled up their sleeves and decided to make it even cooler. There would also be handles with which the backs of the rear seats can be folded straight out of the trunk, as in the Mazda CX-5 and Honda CR-V ... Sorry, I was daydreaming.

By the release of station wagons on the market, the VAZ workers also treated those children's sores, the bouquet of which was once awarded to the sedan. For example, there was a fixed central armrest between the front seats, and not a limp piece of fabric and foam rubber. But the sores were not all taken out. Interior trim materials are still infinitely far from ideal: the most extreme plastic on test cars is no, no, and it creaks, despite the ridiculous - less than a thousand kilometers - mileage. I sincerely and honestly believed that only nuclear weapons and falling apart dumplings could be worse than this transmission. But at AvtoVAZ they say that they receive little negativity about the operation of the box from those 20 percent of Vesta buyers who have opted for masochism and this “robot”.

Nevertheless, I wanted to try out a pair consisting of a 1.8 engine and a French "mechanics" most of all. Especially on Vesta SW. Because in all other driving characteristics it is identical to the sedan: it also pleases with stability and clarity of reactions in corners, just as accurately and quickly follows a pleasantly loaded steering wheel, and the suspension just as confidently copes with almost all the misunderstandings that in this country for some reason often referred to as roads.

But the potential of the motor, which seemed to be hiding behind the shortcomings of the "robot", was not as impressive as we would like. The engine itself is highly unified with the 1.6 unit - except that it is equipped with an intake phase shifter and has a larger volume. There is the same block of cylinders, and the working volume has grown solely due to an increase in the piston stroke. But! It began to be developed when some potential owners of Vesta were still enthusiastically examining books in which there were more pictures than letters. Therefore, it is still not worth demanding feats from this unit.

According to the passport, traction far from the record 170 Nm comes only to 3700 rpm, and up to 2000 the engine frankly sleeps at all. Therefore, if at least some steep climb grows in front of you, you must approach the choice of gear and pedaling with all responsibility.

A little dipped in traction - and that's it. At least jump on the gas pedal, put a brick on it, ask for help to put the squeeze on the person in the passenger seat: Vesta will not accelerate anyway. Therefore, we poke a longish and not entirely clear gear lever one or even a couple of steps lower, and only after that we go further.

However, "Vesta" with 1.8 and mechanics still rides a hundred times better than the version with a robot. If only because it does not present surprises, like sudden shifts with even more sudden releases of the clutch. 10-20 kilometers - and you already more or less understand where the tachometer needle should be before the next maneuver. And having mastered it, you begin to figure out how to reduce the consumption of 92-octane gasoline, which on Sochi roads was in the range from 11 to 13 liters per hundred.

But you are probably more interested in something else - how does the most beautiful version of Cross ride?

Already in the database there are large by the standards of the class 17-inch wheels, 203 mm ground clearance and other springs and shock absorbers. It was possible to wait for anything, but the people from AvtoVAZ took the medical “do no harm” as a basis and did everything so that the driving character of Vesta did not deteriorate. And they succeeded!


Moreover, Lada Vesta SW Cross feels even more lively and interesting than the base sedan! I had to carefully roll back and take the top with a move.

In general, off the asphalt Vesta SW Cross turned out to be a decent fighter. Its capabilities are limited only by two factors - low-profile road tires and the lack of all-wheel drive (especially lacking on long and slippery climbs).


In everyday use, SW Cross is almost no different from a regular SW. This applies to both advantages and disadvantages. For example, earlier the plant installed domestic wipers on new Ladas, which already refused to clean the glass normally in the first kilometers. The brushes for the Vesta conveyor are supplied by the Turkish company MTT, and they work a little better. That's why I installed Japanese Osawa - these clean very well.

I added Rosneft oil, and they poured it into the TO from the branded Lada canister, - but upon closer inspection it turned out that this was the same synthetics from Rosneft with a viscosity of 5W‑40.

In addition to oil, the air and cabin filters were changed for TO‑15,000 km. We checked the chassis and carried out computer diagnostics - no deviations! And Vesta SW Cross continues confidently, delighting with a rather modest appetite: an average of about 8 liters of 92nd gasoline per hundred kilometers.

Lada Vesta SW Cross is a five-door all-terrain station wagon and, in combination, an “all-terrain” version of a cargo-passenger model… The target audience of the car is people who need a vehicle “for all occasions”, combining a bright design and a high level of practicality…

For the first time, the “bright red” concept of an “all-terrain” station wagon with the prefix “Cross” appeared before the world community at the Moscow Auto Show “Off-road Show 2015”, which opened its doors to visitors on August 26, 2015.

Initially, the five-door, to a greater extent, was created in order to demonstrate the ideas available from the Togliatti manufacturer, however, thanks to a positive reaction from potential buyers, at the end of June 2017, the premiere of a production car took place, which did not change much (compared to the prototype) along the way to the conveyor.

Station wagon Lada Vesta Cross organically combines a fairly dynamic style with a practical character.

And if the front end is unified with the original three-volume model, then behind the middle pillar of the car is originality itself - a drop-down roof, a “fin” of the rear pillar and a taut stern with stylish lights.

An unpainted plastic body kit, beautiful 17-inch rollers and increased ground clearance add expressiveness and catchiness to the look of the “SW Cross”.

The cross-country station wagon is extended by 4424 mm in length, its width fits into 1785 mm, and its height does not exceed 1532 mm. The center distance of the five-door is 2635 mm, and its ground clearance is a very solid 203 mm.

The interior of the Lada Vesta SW Cross - with a three-spoke multifunctional steering wheel, dashboard "wells" and a stylishly designed center console that "sheltered" a 7-inch multimedia complex "TV" and an air conditioning unit - is completely borrowed from a conventional station wagon.

But the “off-road vehicle” has original attributes - these are bright applications on the dashboard, seats and instrument cluster.

There is enough free space in the car interior to comfortably accommodate five adults. In front, there are comfortable chairs with tangible lateral support and solid adjustment ranges, and in the back there is a full-fledged sofa with a folding section in the center with cup holders and optional heating.

The cargo capabilities of the Lada Vesta SW Cross are identical to those of the base wagon - in its standard form, its volume is 480 liters (there is an additional 95-liter "capacity" under the raised floor).

The rear sofa folds in the proportion of "60:40", which brings the capacity to 825 liters (however, there is no flat area).

For the Cross version of Vesta, the same gasoline engines are announced as for the three-volume model - these are in-line atmospheric “fours” with a volume of 1.6 and 1.8 liters with distributed injection and a 16-valve timing, developing 106 and 122 hp. and 148 and 170 Nm of available torque, respectively.
Both units are installed in conjunction with a 5-speed “mechanics” and a front-wheel drive transmission, and the “senior” is also available as an option with a 5-band “robot”.

From zero to the first "hundred" all-terrain wagon accelerates in 11.2-12.6 seconds, and the maximum speed is 172-181 km/h. Passport fuel consumption in the combined cycle ranges from 7.5 to 7.9 liters for every 100 kilometers.

The passenger-and-freight Lada Vesta Cross is based on the already well-known three-volume vehicle - in technical terms, they are almost identical to each other. The car is based on the Lada B architecture with an independent MacPherson strut suspension at the front and a semi-independent beam at the rear.
The “all-terrain” wagon is equipped with electric power rack and pinion steering and a braking system, which includes ventilated front and conventional rear discs (ordinary “brothers” have drum devices at the back) and modern electronics.

In Russia, Lada Vesta SW Cross is offered in three trim levels - "Luxe", "Luxe Multimedia" and "Luxe Prestige".

For the basic version of the station wagon, you will have to pay 755,900 rubles, the version with a 1.8-liter "aspirated" can not be bought cheaper than 780,900 rubles, and the most "rich" version costs from 822,900 rubles.
