Since engineers used the latest and lightest materials in the course of work on the body, powertrains, platform, doors and hinged panels, the curb weight of the crossover in the initial configuration was only 1940 kg. And this is as much as 100 kg less than the previous generation model.   • Under the hood of gasoline SUVs there is a 2.0-liter unit with direct “feed” technology, 16 valves, inlet and outlet phase shifters and a turbocharger (and in the “top” version also with a drive compressor), also declared in two boost levels:

We all know the first generation of this wonderful Swedish SUV, but it was long enough in production that the decision was made to release the second generation. In 2014, the manufacturer showed the public at the Stockholm Motor Show Volvo XC90 2018-2019, which has changed dramatically.

This is the flagship car of the brand and therefore it had to be made modern and of the highest quality, which the manufacturer managed to do. This is a completely new model, which has almost nothing in common with the previous version. Let's start the discussion with appearance.

Exterior

The car received a new design, which has a long hood with serious stamping lines in front. These reliefs are very large and look aggressive. Installed narrow lights with LED filling and adaptability. In the middle is a large rectangular false radiator grill, which is completely made of chrome.


A large bumper was installed, which received air intakes that are directed to the brakes and to the engine radiator. The brake air intakes have chrome lines in the middle. At the very bottom there is a silver insert, and on the sides there are small fog lights.

The side of the SUV received large wheel arch extensions with a stamping line, it looks unusual, but stylish. There is a smooth depression in the middle, from which a line emerges below, which, in turn, connects the arches to each other. Below is a chrome insert. There is a thin line at the top, and above it is a chrome trim on the windows. You can also optionally install large roof rails.


The rear of the XC90 features tall taillights that also wrap around the C-pillars, looking unusual and unique. At the very top is a large thin spoiler, on which there is a wide LED brake light repeater.

The large trunk lid has embossed shapes, as well as an electric drive function. The huge rear bumper also has aggressive embossed shapes, as well as reflectors. Under the rear bumper are chrome exhaust pipes.

The steering column is electrically adjustable and has many buttons that are designed to control multimedia and on-board computer. The instrument panel is fully electronic, it mimics analog gauges and displays other useful data.


The manufacturer decided to make the center console of the Volvo XC90 in the style, but this is not a copy, but the style is similar. A 9.5-inch touchscreen display of the Sensus multimedia system is installed. There is also navigation and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. All units are paired with an excellent 8-speed automatic transmission. It transmits torque to all wheels, with the exception of the T5 motor, which has front-wheel drive. The suspension of the car is made entirely of aluminum, which is good, but unfortunately in our country it is not very reliable. There are double wishbones at the front and a multi-link system at the back, all independent of course. There is also an additional spring at the back, which improves softness.

Optionally, the manufacturer offers to install air suspension on the Volvo XC90 2018-2019, which will independently adjust to the type of road, based on this, change the clearance and its stiffness. This look is much more comfortable. It is not difficult to drive a car, as the electric power steering with the function of changing the stiffness helps in this. The car stops thanks to good disc brakes with ventilation only on the front axle.

The history of one of the most successful SUVs of the Swedish brand Volvo began in 2002, when a very spectacular car for its time was introduced to the world: the Volvo XC90.

Despite the large dimensions and brutal appearance, the XC90 has a very common platform from the S60, S80 sedans and the V70 station wagon. But through the new design and due to the lack of unification of body parts, the car seems to be an absolutely independent model. The XC90 has such a huge potential that since 2002 the crossover has experienced only two light updates and this is in 11 years!

Geometric indicators of the car

By modern standards, the crossover is very large, and with the change of generations it has grown somewhat. The release of the car began in 2002 and until 2006 the model had the following dimensions: length 4798 mm, width 1898 mm and height 1743 mm.

After the update, from 2006 to the present, the dimensions are as follows: length 4807 mm, width 1936, height 1784 mm. At the same time, the wheelbase did not change and remained the same: 2857 mm, and the “maximum” weight, taking into account the load, decreased from 2740 kg to 2570 kg. Only the width of the car has grown significantly (+3.8 cm), while the length has changed due to a different shape of the front and rear bumpers. The volume of the fuel tank has also changed, if initially it was 80 liters, then since 2006 it has been only 68. The interior of the car is designed for seven, while full-size seats are installed on the 3rd row of seats, which can be folded into the trunk floor without a trace, which, by the way, has impressive parameters - from 600 liters, with the third row folded down. Engines and gearboxes installed on the XC90

1st generation (2002-2006)

Initially, 4 types of engines were installed on the XC90, one diesel and three gasoline:

  • a 2.4-liter diesel engine had two power options - 163 hp. and 185 hp and differed in a different moment: a less powerful one developed 340 Nm against 400 Nm in the second.
  • the junior gasoline engine of 2.5 liters developed 210 hp. and 320 Nm of thrust.
  • the average gasoline engine was 2.9 liters and produced 272 hp. and 380 Nm of thrust.
  • the largest was a giant of 4.4 liters, powered by gasoline, with a capacity of 325 hp, with a thrust of 440 Nm. Acceleration to 100 km / h with a V-shaped 8-cylinder unit under the hood was only 7.3 seconds.

The Volvo xc90 diesel technical characteristics were distinguished by high efficiency rates, on average they consumed 7.5 liters of diesel fuel, and in urban conditions the consumption did not exceed 10.5 liters. Gasoline versions were more “gluttonous”, even the youngest version (2.4 liters) consumed from 15 liters in the city, and the consumption of more powerful versions tended to 20 liters per 100 km.

2nd generation (2006-2011)

Due to the high fuel consumption, gasoline units were in less demand, and two gasoline units were allocated to the second generation - one of which remained the same, and the new one was more economical than the previous ones. After the update, the engine range was significantly reduced and looked like this:

  • updated diesel 2.4 liters with increased power up to 200 hp and a torque of 420 Nm. With this engine, a car weighing more than 2 tons accelerates to 100 km / h in 10.3 seconds and consumes only 10.4 liters in the city and 6.7 liters on the highway.
  • the gasoline unit passed unchanged from the first generation - 2.5 liters, 210 hp. It is somewhat faster than its diesel counterpart, acceleration to 100 km / h takes 9.9 seconds, but its consumption is significantly higher: 15.7 liters and 9.2 liters in the city and on the highway, respectively.
  • new 3.2 liter engine with 238 hp with a torque of 320 Nm. This gasoline engine was slightly more economical than the previous volumes of 2.9 liters and 4.4 liters and accelerated the car in 9.5 seconds to 100 km / h, fuel consumption in the city was about 16 liters in the city and 9 liters on the highway. Later in 2010, it was boosted to 243 hp, the torque remained the same.

If initially it was possible to purchase an XC90 with a manual transmission, then since 2006, a non-alternative 5-speed automatic for the gasoline version and a 6-speed for diesel have been put on the model. Both machines are from the Geartronic series.

3rd generation (since 2011)

This restyling can be called cosmetic, only the shape of the radiator grille and headlights has changed, as well as a new design of rims and several body colors. The line of power units has once again thinned out, and only two already known motors remain:

  • 2.5 liters (210 hp) gasoline;
  • 2.4 liters (200 hp) diesel.

Four-wheel drive and transmission

By default, the Volvo XC90 is practically a front-wheel drive car, because the distribution of torque along the axes is in the ratio of 95% to 5%. But at the slightest slip of the front wheels, the all-wheel drive system instantly transfers the moment to the rear wheels, which allows you to not lose grip on the surface. At the same time, the slipping wheel is braked so that there is no loss of torque.

The XC90's all-wheel drive system is implemented using a Haldex multi-plate clutch and an advanced electronic system that continuously reads all indicators from numerous sensors. During braking, all-wheel drive is disabled in order not to interfere with the ABS system to perform its functions. Despite the fact that the all-wheel drive is exclusively connected, and the suspension elements are attached to the body (without a frame), the Volvo XC90 won the Russian SUV of the Year award in 2011.
