I did not catch exactly at what point manufacturers began to be shy about the technical characteristics of their cars. Apparently, since all their diversity has been reduced to a dozen or two common platforms ... In any case, there are simply no tables with numbers on dealer sites now. You will be shown the interior a hundred times from all angles and told about the unusually attractive sound of the new audio system, but you will not find the clearance height and trunk volume. Try it yourself, honestly.

So it was necessary to find out what ground clearance the Skoda Yeti with the off-road name "Outdoor" had on completely extraneous resources. And it is equal to 180 mm. It's not that small, but...

In general, let's go in order. The Outdoor version of Yeti appeared with a restyling in 2014, when the crossover lost its charming round “peepholes”, having received ordinary faceted headlights “like everyone else”. Personally, I felt sorry for the lost originality of the look, but the brand's marketers know better. Probably, this is how it sells better - originality is not in trend now.

So, at the same time, two branches were divided - Skoda Yeti simply and Skoda Yeti Outdoor. And, if you thought that the first version is with a monodrive, and the second is with a full one, then you are clearly not a marketer. Because it's not like that at all. Both versions have a completely identical set of trim levels: the same engines, the same transmissions, and so on. There are all-wheel drive idle time"and single-drive Outdoor. So how do they differ? Skoda Yeti never claimed to be a serious "rogue" - it is a "city-dacha" mode car (with an emphasis on the "city"), and not an all-terrain vehicle for a hunter and fisherman. The fashionable word "crossover", which is now called any model that you want to sell at a higher price, does not mean anything in itself. Strictly speaking, it's just a relatively tall wagon. Especially when it comes to monodrive, which I had on the test. 1.4 liter turbo engine with 122 hp plus a seven-speed DSG robotic transmission - a great combination for the city, acceptable for the highway, but far from optimal for off-road. Remember, ground clearance is deceptive - it will allow you to go further than you would in a city car with low-profile Pirelli road tires ...

You should be especially careful with the sand ... The turbo engine does not really like to drive tight, the robot in the transmission does not always understand what you want from it ... - in general, this time the Yeti had to be pushed out by hand.

An all-wheel drive version, in which there are a bunch of electronic assistants, would have coped without difficulty, a single-wheel drive version with mechanics would have made it possible to show driving skills, a diesel engine (two-liter TDI) would have been pulled out by a tractor traction of 250 Nm, but this particular combination of engine and transmission for loose coatings is very intolerant. Yes, that's basically all we have to say about "Outdoor". Now actually about Yeti.

The high popularity of this car is associated with qualities that are by no means off-road. This is a well-balanced urban crossover (since the manufacturer prefers this word), which, first of all, allows you to feel comfortable in the city and on the highway. The car steers well, confidently holds the road at high speeds and in maneuver, and most importantly - it is damn comfortable.

After restyling, a new generation steering wheel from Octavia appeared in the cabin. Perhaps it is prettier and more comfortable than the old steering wheel, although it was pretty good. Decorative overlays have changed, and materials have become of better quality, but in order to notice this, you already need to carefully look closely, comparing with the pre-styling model. Otherwise, the interior remained the same - the VarioFlex transformation system, which was its main advantage, was completely inherited in the updated car. Everything leans back, shifts, is regulated and even taken out.

The driver sits comfortably, and all controls are in place. Which, in general, is not surprising - the Skoda Yeti is a single-platform with the Tiguan, and many technical (and not only technical) solutions migrated to the Czech car from the German one. Well, technical specifications, in the end, should not worry the buyer. This is a modern approach to the car - after all, you are not interested in what type of motor is in your coffee grinder? Okay, okay, the Skoda Yeti in Russia has two diesel and three petrol engines, a six-speed manual transmission and two DSG boxes.

All engines are turbocharged, and all-wheel drive, in case you do not spare money on it, is implemented by the fifth generation Haldex clutch. (By the way, I also had a chance to test all-wheel drive, and I would not spare money on it if I were you. All-wheel drive makes Yeti much better. Especially with a diesel engine ...)

Of course, you can get a wide range of options for your money, up to premium ones, such as, for example, a parking assistant. A crossover with it can independently park both parallel and perpendicular to the curb. (For me, this, however, is too high a degree of trust in technology, I am not yet capable of this. So I would get by with a rear-view camera - it is also in the options, as well as parking sensors.)

But the trunk (whose capacity in liters will have to be looked for!) Is not at all as large as you expect from a large station wagon. With the rear seats pushed back - only 310 liters. (415, which used to be written in prospectuses - this is with the rear sofa shifted all the way forward, plus this includes the volume of the underground, where the spare wheel is - marketing!).

At the same time, under the floor - just a dokatka ...

Where did the space go? Four-wheel drive ate it - the rear axle differential forced the designers to raise the floor. Yes, it is not in this configuration, but there is a place left for it ... - this is another reason to pay extra for 4x4. It's a pity to lose a place just like that.

An antique that was discontinued in 2017. You decide. although the car is decent. And I approve the choice, the Czech Volkswagen with its exterior design, interior and Czech approach. For that kind of money, if we are talking about a new crossover, I would ask when the sellers will have a Skoda Karoq. A brand new SUV and such a cutie.

Parquet crossover or a full-fledged SUV?

In recent years, Skoda has completely rethought its marketing strategy. That is why all the already developed models have been redesigned, and in addition, several completely new types of cars have appeared. Among them are S koda Y eti O utdoor. The car was to the taste of the European public, but in our country it is not very popular. What is the reason? The most obvious answer is prejudice, since Czech stables are usually associated with inexpensive city cars. This is not worth doing for a variety of reasons, let's start with the configuration.

What is hidden under the hood?

Y eti O utdoor 2014 is visually different from its older counterpart from 2010. But apart from the body, no significant changes have occurred. There are four types of gasoline engines to choose from:

  • turbocharged 1.4 TSI with 122 hp and transmission from DSG;
  • multi-injector 1.6 MPI with 105 hp and mechanical transmission;
  • multi-injector 1.6 MPI with 105 hp and automatic transmission;
  • turbocharged 1.8 TSI with 152 hp and transmission from DSG.

It is immediately worth noting that only the latest version has four driving wheels. At the same time, the average fuel consumption is only 8 liters per 100 km. Acceleration to hundreds in 9 seconds, which is an excellent indicator for a car with a mass of 2 tons.

Features of behavior on the road

Without exaggeration, the main advantage of S koda Y eti O utdoor is the chassis. The McPherson front suspension provides a smooth ride, while the rear is equipped with a multi-link system with a stabilizer. Such a system allows you to smoothly overcome even very serious obstacles in off-road conditions.

An ABS brake system is installed, the front brakes are more sensitive due to the floating stupor. Although the electronics distribute the load on the wheels evenly at the moment of braking, it should be borne in mind that the front wheels wedge faster, therefore, during emergency braking, the car does not stretch forward, but goes into a skid. But that's not a problem, as the responsive electro-hydraulic steering keeps the car in complete control.

The 16" wheels are fitted with 215mm tires. This allows you to hold well even a slippery road. At speed, there are no problems with control.

Additional features

This time, Skoda abandoned the traditional three types of equipment and added one more. The following modifications are available to choose from:

  • active;
  • Ambition;
  • elegance;
  • adventure.

Active is the most standard build. It has no special frills, mirrors, wipers, fabric seat upholstery and a modest plastic side panel. There is not even a radio, only 4 speakers are installed. The security system is also not happy, there are no side airbags in front, ABS is installed only for a manual transmission. The climate equipment also leaves much to be desired, since only air conditioning and a stove are installed. On the other hand, 15,000 c.u. it's not so much to demand more.

Ambition already looks more interesting, but it also costs $3,000. expensive. In addition to the standard set, the buyer is offered a folding picnic table, a powerful Swing stereo system with 2DIN, CD, MP3, and eight speakers. Installed indicators Maxi Dot, which suggest the situation on the road and the distance to obstacles. The climate is maintained by the Climatronik system. Unlike the previous modification, here Skoda did not save money and supplied alloy wheels.

Elegance is the most advanced version, which includes many useful gadgets, as well as the most modern stereo system and seventeen-inch wheels. Not very practical in terms of replacing rubber, but original and stylish. In addition, there is cruise control. Which is quite convenient on the road.

Zest

If you delve into the topic in detail, you can find quite a lot of test drives that describe the achievements of S koda Y eti in the field of off-road conqueror. But those who decide to test their car in real conditions are often forced to order a tow truck and go to the service station on foot.

The fact is that all reviews are based on the experience of driving the Adventure modification. It includes everything the same as in Elegance, but in addition to this, the Offroad system. It completely reconfigures all electronics and mechanics of the car, optimally adapting its parameters to driving conditions on open ground or in mountainous areas.

First of all, the ABS and ESP settings change. When braking, the wheels do not wedge at the same time, each of them clings to the ground independently. This is very effective in rough terrain where contact with the coating leaves much to be desired. The driving dynamics are completely changed.

But the main secret is not even in this, the designers from Skoda went to the trick and slightly increased the ground clearance. As a result, the car can be considered a full-fledged SUV. Reverse switching from Offroad, it becomes parquet again. Fuel consumption drops from 11 to a claimed 8 liters per 100 km.

For music lovers, this version provides another interesting feature, the stereo system control buttons are mounted in the leather steering wheel, so you can switch songs or search for radio stations without looking up from driving.

From private to general

Let's go back to the cabin again and see what is in each Y eti configuration. First of all, it is worth noting the original VarioFlex system. The Czechs decided not to save on the luggage compartment, it turned out to be 405 liters, while taking care of the comfort of passengers.

They got used to the rollers on the front seats, but Skoda went further and installed a similar system on the rear seats. This allows you to adjust the distance from the backrest to the front seat. The length of the guide rail is 15 cm. If you use this function, the usable volume increases to 510 liters.

In addition, it is possible to fold not only the rear seats, but also the front passenger seat, which allows you to conveniently transport long overall lengths.

Additional equipment

If we talk about the shortcomings, then only one comes to mind - loading height. Loads weighing 20 or more kg are quite difficult to lift 70 cm from the ground. You can solve the problem with the help of special rails, but they are purchased for a fee. In addition, you can order folding tables in the seats and additional boxes for storing tools or things.

In general terms, we can conclude that Y eti O utdoor is a full-fledged, multifunctional SUV, which, for its 20,000 USD. simply has no competition.

On the other hand, the rest of the modifications are just an imitation of a real all-terrain vehicle; in fact, this is a typical representative of parquet jeeps. Given some functional features, this car can be recorded in the TOP 10 budget family cars.
