In the modern navy, ships are equipped with powerful power plants that use heavy residual fuels. This makes it necessary to prepare the fuel for combustion in the engine in order to ensure its long and uninterrupted operation. The key to long engine life is a high degree of efficiency in fuel and oil purification. The main mechanism of fuel preparation or oil purification systems - the separator - is responsible for performing this task. A centrifugal separator separates foreign mechanical impurities and water from fuel or oil and removes them using the difference in the densities of the components and centrifugal forces generated when the separator drum rotates. Water and higher density particles accumulate near the outer wall of the drum due to centrifugal force during the separation process. The accumulated sludge is discharged through the separator outlets in self-discharging separators or is removed mechanically when cleaning the separator in non-discharging separators. Similar devices are found on every ship and may differ in design, but rarely differ in functionality.
The Norta MIT company brings to your attention products from the best manufacturers in this area, such as ALFA-LAVAL, WESTFALIA, MITSUBISHI and other companies.
Scandinavian quality in every detail
Alfa Laval separators are most often used in the fleet. For separators from this company, the inter-plate gap is reduced by 17-22% compared to other companies. Due to this, it was possible to increase the number of plates in the drum without increasing its dimensions. A distinctive design element of these models is the presence of specific pressure discs that serve as a replacement for traditional pumps for pumping out fuel and oil. The company pays great attention to automation of the separation process. For example, the Alfax and Alcap technologies developed by the company ensure the operation of alfa laval separators in automatic mode, performing all work operations according to a predetermined program. Emergency signaling and protection are also provided. The partial discharge method used in the new alfa laval separators has reduced fuel or oil loss, water consumption and maintenance costs. Alfa Laval is constantly improving its products. In the field of shipbuilding and ship repair, the company's new development is the separation systems of the S and P Flex series. The alfa laval type S separator meets the requirements of CWA 15 375 (Standard for the performance of marine separation systems) and uses Alcap technology. System parameters are adjusted automatically depending on the density of heavy fuel. The alfa laval type P separator does not use Alcap technology. The selection of the gravity disk depending on the density of the heavy fuel is carried out manually. This economical option is used for the separation of diesel fuel and lubricating oil of uniform density. Automation of control is carried out using a modular control unit EPC 60, which is protected from vibration and high temperature of the engine room.
With German precision especially for you
Another well-known representative of this class of machines is the Westfalia separator. GEA Westfalia Separator supplies separation systems designed specifically for continuous operation in the harshest conditions. This provides you with:
Optimal performance
Long service life of your engines
High environmental standards
Westfalia self-unloading separators with UNITROL systems automatically control the level of water content in the oil product during round-the-clock cleaning of solid contaminants. The result is optimal separation efficiency for different types of fuels and lubricating oils. Maintenance is generally only required after 8,000–16,000 operating hours. Operation that does not require operator control greatly facilitates the work of the machine team. Collected oil sludge can be processed on board, significantly reducing waste disposal costs. All separation systems can be supplied as separate modules. Westfalia's new "eagleclass" class of separators has been developed using the know-how of the technology leader in the field of centrifugal separation processes. The innovative separator design and the new control system Westfalia Separator® unitrolplus set new standards in the energy, marine, oil production and refining, industrial and environmental technology market segments. Large centrifugal forces made it possible to achieve a productivity of 80 m3/hour for the first time. The Westfalia Separator® unitrolplus system guarantees maximum separation efficiency of various liquids such as fuel, lubricating oil, oil-contaminated water, washing liquor, etc.
Westfalia separators are time-tested and sea-tested units, ready to work in the most difficult conditions.
In addition to supplying assembled separators, the Norta MIT company offers spare parts for separators, both new models and separators that have been in operation for quite some time. The Swedish company Alfa Laval is a world leader in the key areas of heat transfer, separation and fluid handling technologies for many industries, including shipbuilding and marine energy. Today it is already an international industrial concern that has 28 large factories around the world, of which 15 are in Europe, 8 in Asia, 4 in the USA and 1 in Latin America, as well as 70 service centers. Scientific developments are carried out in 20 research centers. 110 commercial divisions and representative offices in 95 countries successfully sell Alfa Laval products.
It all began with the development by Gustav de Laval of a centrifugal milk separator with a capacity of 130 liters per hour, first demonstrated in 1879 in Stockholm. The founding year of Alfa Laval is considered to be 1883, when Gustaf de Laval and his partner Oskar Lamm created the AB Separator company.
The most important stage in the improvement of separators was the acquisition of a patent for conical metal discs from the German inventor Clemens von Bechtolsheim in 1889. With the help of these so-called Alpha discs, the productivity of the separator has increased many times.
Alfa Laval sold its first oil separator in 1916. In the pre-war years, enterprises were formed in Denmark, South Africa, Finland, Australia, New Zealand, Poland, Yugoslavia and Ireland.
The company's first sales of self-cleaning separators began in 1951.
In 1963, the company changed its name from AB Separator to Alfa-Laval AB. The name “Alpha” is derived from Alpha disks and “Laval” from the surname of the company’s founder.
In subsequent years, the company has successfully developed in the areas of heating, cooling, separation (separation) and transportation of liquids in enterprises involved in the production of food products, beverages, chemicals and petroleum products, medicines, starch, sugar, ethyl alcohol, etc. In addition, the company produces equipment for refrigeration and air conditioning. Alfa Laval is expanding its factories, offices and warehouses around the world.
In 1993, the corporation acquired the Bolshevsky Machine-Building Plant (Korolev, Moscow Region), which was later renamed Alfa Laval Potok OJSC. Now the plant operates two production lines: collapsible plate heat exchangers and air heat exchangers for refrigeration systems.
Currently, the Alfa Laval concern has become the world's leading supplier of separators, heat exchangers, pumps, refrigeration equipment and air conditioners, both through its own developments and through the acquisition of patents, as well as the purchase of other companies such as Helpman, Finnish Fincoil, Packinox SA, Aalborg Industries , Frank Mohn and others. All this has led to a significant strengthening of Alfa Laval's presence in the maritime and offshore markets.

Spare parts for separators ALFA LAVAL MAB 102, 103, 104
If the oil or fuel is waterlogged or heavily contaminated, filters will not clean them. In this case, separators are used to purify fuel or oil.
The separation process is based on the use of centrifugal force generated by the rotational movement of the liquid to separate impurity particles. Separators are available with manual cleaning with deactivation, with cleaning without deactivation and self-cleaning separators of continuous operation. The most common separators on foreign vessels are the Alfa Laval type.
Separators MAB 102/103/104 ALFA LAVAL - have a reliable and compact design, very easy to usenew The manually operated MAV separation system is ideal for use on board coastal and fishing vessels, auxiliary work boats, ferries and yachts. As a complete system for the purification or clarification of petroleum products, it, like the MMB 305 separator and the MIB 303 separator, is characterized by ease of operation and large space for sedimentation of sludge, which extends the operating period between manual cleaning cycles. The purposes of separation can be:
- Purification of liquid from solid particles
- Separating two mutually insoluble liquids of different densities while simultaneously removing any solid particles present
- Separation and concentration of solids in liquids
ADVANTAGES OF THE MAB SEPARATOR 102/103/104 ALFA LAVAL
- Easy to maintain.
- The equipment has shown reliability with low maintenance costs and minimal costs for spare parts MAB 103 ALFA LAVAL.
- Can be used for cleaning lubricating oils, distillate and diesel fuels and oils for marine diesel engines.
- Productivity when purifying distillate and diesel fuel and oils for marine diesel engines (MDO): MMV: 1300-4800 l/h; MAV: 300-1150 l/h.
Operating principle of separator MAB 102/103/104 ALFA LAVAL
The liquid mixture in the stationary drum is cleared slowly; heavy particles in liquid
mixtures sink to the bottom under the influence of gravity. Lighter liquid rises while heavier liquid and solids sink. Continuous separation and sedimentation can be achieved in a settling tank having outlets adapted to different liquid densities. The heavier particles in the liquid mixture settle and form a sediment layer at the bottom of the tank. The accumulation of sludge is periodically removed from the bowl manually.

Alfa Laval separator description
Description of design and principle of operation
In my work I use a separator from Alfa Laval. The CLARA series includes a range of models with different capacities: CLARA 20, CLARA 80, CLARA 200 and CLARA 500. CLARA is a completely ready-to-install separation system based on Alfa Laval disc separator technology. The design provides high dynamic overload, meets the requirements of strict hygienic standards and is equipped with an automatic control system.
Alfa Laval separator diagram:
The separation process takes place in a rotating drum. The product is fed into the rotating drum of the separator from above through a fixed inlet pipe (1) and accelerates in the distributor (2) before entering the stack of plates (3). The distributor is specially designed to ensure smooth acceleration of the supplied liquid. The separation of liquid and solid phases occurs in the space between the plates. In this case, the liquid phase moves through the package of plates to the center of the drum and enters the pressure chamber, from where it is discharged from the separator under pressure through the built-in pressure disk (4). The solid phase is collected at the periphery of the drum, from where it is periodically discharged into a casing with a solid phase accumulator. The solid phase is unloaded by a hydraulic system, which, at specified time intervals, sharply moves the movable bottom of the drum (5) down. thus opening the solid phase discharge channels (6). This is a typical design of a centrifugal separator with unloading of the separated solid phase.
Purpose and scope
The CLARA separator is capable of removing suspended solids ranging in size from 0.5-500 microns. The solids content of the initial product is usually 0.1-10% of the total volume, but can be higher. Thus, CLARA separators are very well suited for clarification of products such as:
White grape must (gravity flow and pressed juice)
· young wine (still and sparkling)
mature wine
· juices (fruit, citrus, tropical fruits).
The CLARA Series separators feature a DynaFlow multi-purpose inlet assembly designed to handle variable solids concentrations and flow rates. The feed rate increases very slowly, minimizing particle disruption and increasing separation efficiency.
In addition, CLARA separators are equipped with Alfa Laval's computerized SmartEject system with automatic start-up, which periodically discharges low-moisture solids particles. The waterproof Oxy-stop shell prevents oxygen from penetrating inside, and the built-in pressure disc eliminates the need for an external pump. The upper part of the case can be covered with a special casing for cooling and noise suppression.
The retractable drum bottom is covered with an easily replaceable special material to protect against abrasive solids. The presence of a frequency converter in a variable frequency drive provides a number of advantages, including low starting current and short-term autonomous power supply in the event of a power failure.
The special geometry of the centrifuge drum promotes smooth acceleration of agglomerates and displacement-sensitive particles. These important hydrodynamic improvements, combined with a new patented plate stack design, provide maximum separation efficiency while helping to reduce energy consumption. A pressure disc that helps minimize oxygen ingress and does not allow odors or carbon dioxide to escape. Hermetically sealed version with a locking mechanism that allows clarification of sparkling wines under pressure.
